It’s Stafford SHOWTIME! Welcome to The 38th Carole Nash International Classic MotorCycle Show, the greatest motorcycle show on earth. It really stopped me in my tracks when I typed ‘38th’ just now. How did all those years pass by so quickly? It’s almost certain that we have visitors to the show this weekend who weren’t even born when founding father Alan Whitehead launched the very first Classic Bike Show, as it was then known. To put the changes in our hobby since then into perspective let’s assume you had been around long enough to have owned a motorcycle or two – hopefully you still do. If you were 16 or more, what were you riding when the show was launched? Hopefully that has got you thinking. It certainly did me. I was at that very first show at Manchester’s Belle Vue, now long since demolished, and even had a bike on display too, my Seeley G50. At that time my then regular race bike was only 10 years old! Classic indeed!
Which of course got me thinking about some of the other machinery in my shed, which now enjoys that revered status and was, like me, a lot younger back then? My oldest steed, my much loved Rudge Rapid, was only 41 years old back then, hardly ancient, and my Ducati TT2, now very much a sought-after classic, was still four years away from being created. All of which tells us what a man of vision our founder was, either that or he had a load of old motorcycles in his shed and was looking for somewhere to offload them. How things have changed in those 38 years. Surely Alan Whitehead could never have imagined the huge event we are all enjoying this weekend. Or that there would be a whole industry built around what was a relatively cheap hobby, and is now in many ways just as large and important as the British motorcycle industry that
was, which at that time was staggering towards its painful death. Most importantly what it does show is that the whole old bike movement has a long and rosy future ahead of it. Don’t let anyone tell you there aren’t any classic projects left to discover, or that restoring a more modern machine with all its complex electronics is impossible. History is a moving feast. The 38th Carole Nash Classic MotorCycle Show WILL be the best in its 38 year history, with all the right component parts in place for an unforgettable weekend! You heard it here first. And if it turns out to be your first visit to the show on your 2018 Yamasaki or Hondumph, just think, in a very short space of time you could be exhibiting it at the 48th Carole Nash Classic MotorCycle Show. On with the show
Whatever you do, don’t miss out on THE motorcycle show of the spring. It’s April so it must be time for the Carole Nash International Classic MotorCycle Show, this year taking place over the weekend of April 21-22. Even 38 years down the line from the original, no other classic show on the planet, or possibly in the rest of the galaxy for that matter, comes close. When it comes to a winning formula The Carole Nash International Classic MotorCycle Show has it all, and yet always throws up something new each year. At the heart of any show are the club stands, and you won’t find a better or more diverse selection than at Stafford, packed with motorcycles

covering over 100 years of two-wheel fun. With displays that wouldn’t have looked out of place at any current motorcycle show in the 1960s or 70s the avid enthusiasts vie for the honour of a spot in the top three. And what makes winning one of these cherished awards, which comes with a huge cash prize, even better is that all the clubs judge each other. When it comes to stunning restorations the private entry line-up is nothing short of breath taking. Add to that the largest motorcycle only autojumble in the world, trade stands showcasing what’s on offer from the specialists in the hobby,
and Bonhams’ record-breaking auction, it is almost impossible to pack it all in to one day. This year’s guest of honour is Neil Tuxworth, a former top road racer who turned into one of the sport’s most successful team managers. He will be appearing on stage both days to give us the real inside line and also visiting the ever popular Classic Racer Grand Prix Paddock. Inside this issue of Motor Cycle Monthly we aim to give you something of a flavour of what’s on offer, but to truly appreciate it you need to head to Stafford over the weekend of April 21-22.
Hello from the show’s sponsor, Carole Nash Welcome to the Stafford County Showground for the 38th Carole Nash International Classic Motorcycle Show – the biggest classic motorbike show in the world! If there’s a better way to spend a weekend in April, we’ve yet to find it! Take a wander around the showground and lose yourself in the hundreds of trade stands, autojumbles, bike displays and club stands, with tonnes of gleaming metal on show. For fans of classic bikes, nowhere else comes close. You will be in excellent company. of the famous race machines of yesteryear letting it rip. Wherever you wander, be sure to stop by the Carole Nash stand M68 to enter our fabulous free prize draw for a chance to win £250 off your insurance policy. Neil Tuxworth: road racer, ice racer and king maker The guest of honour this April is a man you know (but don’t, yet). Words: Malc Wheeler The sport of motorcycle racing has thrown up many ‘all-rounders’ over the decades, indeed back in the 1950s it wasn’t unusual to use the same machine for two or even three different disciplines. But as each type of event became more specialist, as did the machinery used, serious competitors tended to concentrate on their chosen sector. But not Neil Tuxworth, clearly a man born out of his time. It was almost inevitable that Lincolnshire lad Neil would compete in the sport in some form or other; both his parents were avid enthusiast and regular visitors to the Isle of Man TT and the UK short circuits. So you would have to think it was no surprise to them when young Neil, still attending the local Louth, Lincolnshire, Grammar School at the time took to the track. That first foray was at his local circuit, Cadwell Park, on March 15, 1969, aboard a humble BSA Bantam, which he rode to second place in his first ever race. From small beginnings as they say. In what seemed like no time at all Neil was racing in British National and International meetings scoring podiums and wins. With his parents’ love of the Isle of Man TT it was
inevitable he would be drawn to the greatest challenge in motorcycle sport, and he did the old folks proud along the way, racking up a Manx Grand Prix win, a runner up spot in the Formula 2 TT and five third places! Neil was always keen to travel and he followed the Continental Circus as much as possible, scoring Grand Prix World Championship points in the UK, Austria, and Finland. But it was his interest, and desire, to race anything with two wheels that saw him compete in Moto Cross, Sand Racing and even Ice Racing during the ‘quiet’ winter months. Neil claims his last competitive ride was a beach race at Mablethorpe in 2012. In June 1986, at the tight parkland Aberdare Park in Wales, Neil came very close to paying the ultimate price for his sport. Medics, and Neil’s family, initially feared for his life, but he battled through only to be told he may never walk again. I personally witnessed his fight back to fitness; believe me, inside the pleasant, wellmannered man you see on stage at the show is a true man of steel. Obviously after a warning like that you hang up your leathers? Not Neil. As soon as he could sit on a racing motorcycle again he was back, and went on to finish ninth in TT Formula 3 race in 1988 and fourth in the same race the following year.
He also exorcised the devils with a third in the Aberdare Welsh Championship final in 1989 and finally the Ulster Grand Prix Formula 3 race in 1989 where he came home fifth, before retiring one week later to begin his career as Race Team Manager for Honda UK. Starting this new chapter, initially from buildings on his parents farm he ultimately moved the team to the palatial premises in Louth,
Lincolnshire. During his management career, Neil managed some of the more colourful characters in the sport, from Joey Dunlop through John Kocinski to Colin Edwards, giving his employer, Honda, many great championships along the way. It’s guaranteed that Neil’s time on stage at the show will be entertaining; I for one won’t miss it. Check the timetable within these pages to make sure you don’t.

at the Stafford show As well as the many incredible bikes and superb club stands on show, if you would like a laugh come to see the Classic Bike Guide team attempting to build their classic race-bike, live on the Mortons magazine subscriptions stand in the Main Hall. A humble 1971 Honda CL350, left neglected and seized since 1976 in an American barn, is hopefully going to be transformed into a competitive race bike for classic race series with the CRMC and BHR clubs in the UK, as well as some road-racing in Belgium. This is no factory-supported effort though; the idea is to see if anyone can build a bike that is competitive enough, yet without spending the children’s inheritance. Begging, borrowing and occasionally stealing may occur… The CL350 is a scrambler-styled variant of the CB350, which was only imported to the USA. The main differences to the CB that we got in the UK are a different tank, forks, bars, wheel sizes and some rather attractive, but more restrictive high-level exhaust pipes. The 325cc four-stroke parallel-twin, with its five-speed gearbox, is the same. In racing, these bikes are often called the K4; due to the fact that the fourth incarnation had a disc brake at the front rather than a drum, allowing it better brakes for racing. In today’s series, you are allowed to run several lighter, stronger frames
Hot on the heels of an amazing Las Vegas sale at the Rio Hotel and Casino in January, the Bonhams team are now focused on the Stafford Spring Sale. The Vegas sale saw Bonhams’ Malcolm Barber bring the hammer down on the rare, original Australian speed record-setting 1951 Vincent Black Lightning for $929,000, making it the most valuable motorcycle ever sold in auction. Already consigned for Stafford is an impressive range of rare and significant motorcycles from the collection of the late Miklos ‘Mike’ Salamon. The eclectic Surrey-based collection includes a 1970 Clymer Münch 1177cc TTS ‘Mammoth’ (£75,000-£100,000), a 1940 Indian 78ci Four (£28,000-£35,000) and a 1973 MV Agusta 750S (£70,000-£90,000). Mike Salamon was one of the most dedicated collectors on the scene who bought his first machine at 18 and as his career took off, so did his astonishing collection. His career in mining went from strength to strength, taking him from South Africa to Australia and eventually the UK. Ben Walker, International Head of Department, said: “This collection represents the very pinnacle of motorcycle collecting, and illustrates the passion and dedication poured in to the motorcycles by Mike. Bonhams is thrilled to be offering such an incredible range of machines, especially ones which have been so lovingly looked after and used.” Further highlights from the collection include, 1974 Ducati 750 GT (£16,000-£20,000), 1979 Honda CBX 1000Z (£10,000-£14,000), 1965 BMW 594cc R69S (£10,000-£14,000), 1976 Kawasaki Z900 A4 (£8,000-£12,000), and 1977 Benelli 750cc Sei (£8,000-£12,000). like the TAB or Drixton frames, but Classic Bike Guide is sticking with the original, albeit strengthened and tweaked. Many racers use the better suspension from the larger 500cc models, but CBG will have to see what’s left in the coffers. Any advice would be gratefully received – or just come and wish them luck!
Feel The Noise The Classic Racer Grand Prix Paddock is now a well-established and hugely popular part of any Stafford Show. Rare, and in most cases extremely loud, racing motorcycles entertain four times over the weekend, (check the timetable to make sure you don’t miss a show) and MC and former TT winner Steve Plater gets to interview the characters that make the sport so special. When the machines, and owners, aren’t in the warm-up area they are on display around the horseshoe shaped paddock. And the owners like nothing better than chatting to interested and enthusiastic show visitors.
In the club – the VMCC Stalwarts of the old bike movement the Vintage Motor Cycle Club break new ground at the show this year. The club is always a prominent feature at the April event at Stafford County Showground but this time around they have gone one better by taking over a whole side hall. In their own dedicated show within a show, the VMCC aim to not only show some extremely rare and historic motorcycles but show just what is on offer to their members. They will also be selling tickets to win their latest raffle motorcycle.

A Bonnie celebration This year marks the 60th anniversary of Triumph announcing the launch of its seminal Bonneville and this auspicious event will be celebrated at the show on the Classic MotorCycle stand in the Main Hall. Even though its launch was accompanied by little fanfare, the Bonneville was to become a seminal machine – the best known British motorcycle. It also represented something new – the start of motorcycling as a leisure activity, led by the American market, where the Bonnie (as it was tagged almost immediately) excelled, in terms of performance and popularity. There have been a vast number of Bonneville incarnations over the years, from the 1959 model to modern, through unit, oil-in-frame, T140, TTs, Scramblers, 1200s, even the A2 licence-friendly Street Twin, which is probably as far away from the first mad, bad and dangerous to know, single-downtube, twin-carb ’59 as it’s possible for a motorcycle to be, in terms of both conception and actual performance. Not to say the A2 version isn’t a lovely motorcycle – it is – and it’s worth noting that its 47bhp
compares favourably with that first version, but whereas the first version was a rip-snorting hot rod, the new one is easy to ride and live with. The latest Thruxton R – based on the 1200cc version of the Bonneville – is probably closest to that original idea. Though what’s the best Bonnie? Well, all have their plus points, but a couple stand out, one being the 1970 US spec job (so a unit T120). Among aficionados the 1968-1970 Bonneville is probably considered the best of the lot. The US spec bars are higher than UK ones, which mean that the riding position is more upright, while the slim, waisted export tank meant that a glance down saw two carburettor air-cleaners poking out the sides, which looked brilliant. Tellingly, it’s that paint scheme the 2016 1200cc
T120 echoed, as did the first (2001) Hinckley Bonneville. Every Bonneville has its advocates. You pays your money, you makes your choices – whether it’s a 1959 tangerine dream, a ’66 TT Special, ’77 Silver Jubilee, an ’06 T100 or a 2018 T120; they all allow you to be part of the most famous ‘family’ in motorcycling. The four we’re assembling on The Classic MotorCycle main stand in the Main Hall – a 1959 ‘tangerine dream’, a pre-unit duplex-framed version, the seminal (best?) 1970 and the later T140 – are representative of a fabulous model in its various incarnations. All were among the machines we photographed for a special supplement to celebrate the model. We’re obliged to the National Motorcycle Museum for their loan.
Getting down and dirty If off-road sport is your bag than the Classic Dirt Bike Hall and trials demonstrations has plenty to keep you entertained over the weekend. Again check the timetable to make sure you don’t miss this great insight in to what makes classic off-road sport so popular and accessible.
Living History Mortons Archive is unquestionably the finest collection of its type in the world and this weekend you can get a small glimpse of just what it has to offer. Featuring on the Mortons stand will be a tiny sample of what is available from this treasure trove, with archivist Jane Skayman on hand to answer your questions.
