The centre spread can have text and images that run across the gutter. The red, grey and black areas are exactly as explained above.

The red area is the bleed area. Bleed extends out 5mm from the edge of your finished document. All images or colour that prints to the edge of your document should be extended into this area to avoid the chance of any white lines appearing.

The grey area is the non-print area. Any Text placed in this area will run very close to the edge of the document and could possibly get trimmed off.

The black area is the critical image area. Text or images including folios should not exist outside this area.

If you have a spread over two pages other than a centre spread the pages must still be sent as single PDFs. In this instance images can go over the gutter. Please make sure that headline text is spaced either side of the exact centre to avoid any letters being split as this will not join up exactly when printed.

Colour profiles & settings

It’s important to note that it’s almost impossible to replicate exactly in print the colours that you see on a computer screen. They’re two entirely different media – screens display colours according to transmitted light in the RGB range, while paper displays colours according to the absorption and reflection of CMYK.

However using the correct colour profiles for printing can help to achieve the best possible reproduction of colour. The correct colour profile must be installed when converting images from RGB to CMYK

RGB

What is the RGB conversion to CMYK all about?

RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue; and RGB is the ‘colour space’ used by computer monitors, digital cameras and scanners.

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black.

Almost all conventional and digital printing presses use CMYK .

The problem is that RGB and CMYK have different colour gamuts. A colour gamut is the range of colours that a colour space can reproduce. RGB has a wider colour gamut than CMYK. That is, RGB is capable of reproducing more colours than CMYK. RGB tends to be able to reproduce colours at the extremes of red, green and blue that CMYK is incapable of reproducing. In other words, bright reds, greens and blues will not be quite so bright when converted to CMYK.

Using the correct colour profile when converting to CMYK will do two things that will help ensure the best reproduction. Firstly it will simulate as near as possible how these colours will look when printed on a newspaper press. Secondly it will apply the correct amount of ink coverage that can be printed on typical newspaper stocks.

The above colour profiles and settings will need placing in locations within your computer’s hard drive. Once in place you will be able to select them in Photoshop.

Your photoshop is now setup.

Any conversion from RGB to CMYK will now embed the correct values and display as close as possible how it will print. If you have any images that are already in CMYK format you will have to re open them in Photoshop. When opening you will get a warning about an embedded profile mismatch. Select convert documents colours to the working space as seen in the image to the right hand side. If you get the same warning when opening RGB images then select using the embedded profile.

Having the correct profiles and settings will make a big difference in how images will reproduce but image correction will still need to be applied to improve things further. This should mostly take place after converting to CMYK. Photoshop curve tool

Whilst it may appear complex the curve tool is actually easy to use, it’s more powerful and flexible than any of the other adjustment tools.

The curve tool can be found by going to the image drop down menu then selecting curves from the adjustments sub menu.

1 1) Clicking on the diagonal line creates a point. When moving this point downwards the image becomes lighter.

2) When moving this point upwards the image becomes darker.

3) By creating the point in the top right hand corner and then sliding the point to the left will increase the shadow area.

4) By creating the point in the bottom left hand corner and then sliding the point to the right will increase the highlight.

5) By creating two points and then creating a mild S shaped curve you can enhance overall contrast.

Correcting images to a consistent high standard can be difficult as well as time consuming. Here at Mortons we can provide you with automated picture correction with two methods available.

Image upload method

Simply upload your original uncorrected images to a dedicated input folder on our FTP server.

Our system will quickly perform the necessary correction and place in an output folder ready for you to download and place within your desktop publishing software. Images uploaded need to be in RGB colour space saved in JPG format with maximum quality compression. If possible it’s recommended that the images are sized as they are to appear in the publication before uploading. Adverts or logos containing corporate colours should not be uploaded to avoid correction that could result in colours changing.

Correction within PDF

Automated picture correction logos containing corporate colours should be placed in CMYK to avoid correction that could result in colour changing. Placing text that has transparencies effects applied to it should not be placed over the top of images as this can affect the correction. If you wish to use that type of effect the picture will need to be placed in CMYK for that instance.

Which method should I use?

The image upload method gives you the option to call up and check your images before going to print. Sometimes pictures that contain strange lighting effects such as dark indoor images with coloured lighting can cause unusual results. Also you may want to adjust the correction further after our system has processed the image. The correction within PDF method can speed up your workflow greatly as you will not need to upload your images separately as all correction takes place after you upload the final print ready PDFs. This means you will not get to see the images unless you request PDF proofs back. Also extra correction will not be possible.

Creating print quality PDF files

It’s important when exporting your pages to PDF that the correct settings are used. This will ensure everything prints exactly as it should without any unexpected results or quality issues. PDF files should be version 1.3, font embedded with no crop marks, registration marks or printer marks.

Each page must be sent as a separate PDF file with the exception of the centre spread.

Exporting to PDF from Indesign

If you haven’t already received the PDF Preset file MORTONS COLDSET PDF.joboptions you can either contact a member of the Pre-press team or download it from www.mortonsprint.co.uk.

Save the file on your Applemac or PC in a location you can easily find.

If you haven’t already received the PDF Output file MORTONS COLDSET PDF.xml you can either contact a member of the Pre-press team or download it from www.mortonsprint.co.uk. Save the file on your Applemac or PC in a location you can easily find.

From the edit drop down menu select Output Styles.

When the Output Styles window appears click on the import button in the bottom left hand corner.

Locate the MORTONS COLDSET PDF.xml file then click open.

From the file drop down menu select Adobe PDF Preset followed by define in the sub menu.

You wil now be back in the Output Styles window where you click save.

Locate the MORTONS COLDSET PDF.joboption file then click open.

When the Export as PDF window appears type the filename of the page you wish to export next to filename. Type the page number of the page you wish to PDF next to Pages then select MORTONS COLDSET PDF next to the PDF Style at the bottom.

Finally click the save button to complete the process.

When the Adobe PDF Preset window appears click Load.

You will now be back in the Adobe PDF Preset window where you click done.

To create a pdf with the new settings select Adobe PDF Preset from the file drop down menu followed by MORTONS COLDSET PDF in the sub menu.

When the export window appears type in the filename of the page you wish to export in to the filename field and then click save.

When the Export Adobe PDF window appears select the range under pages towards the middle of the window. Type the number of the page you wish to PDF then click export.

When exporting a centre spread also select spread underneath range then type the two page numbers separated with a hyphen. So for example if the centre pages are pages 24 and 25 they should be typed 24-25. Click the export to complete the process.

To create a PDF with the new settings select export followed by Layout as PDF from the sub menu.

When exporting a centre spread click the options button at the bottom of the Export as PDF window. Click the spreads box, click done before proceeding with the process.

If you are creating PDF files from other software packages print quality settings should be selected as well as taking in to account our requirements as mentioned at the start of this page.

How should I name my files?

When you come to send your artwork to us you will not only need to save each page separately but with a specific filename structure that is unique to each publication. The filename structure will ensure that the pages are imposed in the correct order

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

We strongly recommended that all pdfs are sent directly to our FTP server. Using email or web applications to send are not as reliable and sometimes cause problems.

FTP is a standard network protocol used to transfer files from one host to another over a TCP–based network such as the Internet.

If you haven’t already received an FTP username and password please contact a member of the Prepress Dept and they will be able to create you an account.

It’s very difficult to get four separately printed colours to line up exactly on a newspaper press.

The smaller the text or rule the harder it is to print clearly without any ghosting appearing so please take in to account the information given on this page. See the example below of how things can sometimes appear when the information on this page is not taken in to account.
