Patents for smaller Niken revealed The patents for Yamaha’s next Niken show that it’s an MT-03-powered leaning three-wheeler!

A series of official designs from the factory are being filed as part of a patent for the next Yamaha threewheeler. Two things are clear from the drawings; the funky two-wheeled front end is virtually identical to the MT-09-powered Niken three-wheeler launched recently – and the new bike’s powerhouse and chassis, seat and petrol tank come directly from the current MT-03.

In the designs, the small Niken has extra frame parts around the bulk of the engine to cope with the extra side-turn forces generated by the bike’s quirky front end. Other than that, the 321cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, dohc, four-valve motor, swingarm, wheels, seat and tank are all identical to the current learner-legal, 42bhp A2 friendly MT-03 (pictured right).

Rumours from Japan suggest that Yamaha has been looking at smaller capacity Nikens as part of a future line-up, but up until now, those rumours have fluctuated between the possibility of a very small capacity 125cc MT-based version to a larger MT-07 derived option.

Ducati testing vehicle-to-vehicle communication system with Audi with the Tricity scooter, the small option Niken looks to have been wishful thinking and with these exclusive images of the MT-03powered Niken (surely it’ll become known/called the Nik3n?) the 07-version doesn’t appear to be in the pipeline anytime soon either.

Could the MT-03 gain an extra wheel?

Ducati has been working with Audi to test its new vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication system, which is intended to help reduce collisions between cars and motorcycles.

Ducati has outlined a strategic plan, called the Safety Road Map 2025, for the development of new safety systems and technologies for its machines. The first steps in the strategy are to extend ABS Cornering to its entire range, and to introduce a bike with front and rear radars to the market by 2020.

But that’s not all; the iconic Italian brand is experimenting, looking at a range of new technologies that will equip its bikes in the medium and long term. Arguably the most exciting of these technologies is C-V2X. Essentially, it’s a wireless communication system that talks between cars, motorcycles, pedestrians, bicycles and infrastructure.

Using an Audi Q7 and an A4 plus a Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro, Ducati demonstrated common situations that can take place between motorcycles and vehicles and how C-V2X technology can be used to help improve road safety.

These include ‘Intersection Collision Warning’, where a vehicle equipped

with C-V2X technology pulls out from a junction with an adjoining road and avoids hitting a motorcycle rider who has the right of way, as well as ‘Across Traffic Turn Collision Risk Warning’, in which a vehicle avoids a left turn collision with a motorcycle. Finally, there’s also a warning if the vehicle in front brakes suddenly.

Pierluigi Zampieri, vehicle innovation manager at Ducati Motor Holding, said: “This is the perfect demonstration of use cases in which the modern technologies can drastically improve the safety of future motorcycle users. Indeed, the C-V2X communication is definitely one of the key projects of the Ducati Safety Road Map 2025.”

New plastic road signs ‘will save bikers lives’ European vehicle safety experts DEKRA are trialling a new range of plastic road signs in Germany to minimise the risk of injury to motorcyclists who are involved in accidents.

The majority of road signs are currently manufactured from steel and can be a real hazard for motorcyclists, and that’s why DEKRA is currently testing a range of plastic solutions. The crash tests have yielded some pretty impressive results.

The impact of a motorcyclist against a steel pole will most likely have fatal consequences, but a collision with the new poles plastic would likely only cause minor injuries – the poles simply break.

Some new signs have already been installed in the Baden-Württemberg region of Germany and will gradually replace the old metal installations.

No news yet from the UK Government, but they’d be hard pressed to ignore the advantages.

READERS’ LETTER Burgman beefs In your Suzuki Burgman 400 review published in issue 15, you make reference to the seat height maybe being up on the previous model because of the wheel size, but I think it’s due to the increased seat padding as basic trigonometry would show that one-inch (or half-inch on wheel rims) would not raise the seat 20mm.

You say that the windscreen is tool adjustable – not so; it’s fixed.

You say the dash shows coolant temperature – not so; it only has a warning light. You say a chain lock gate is built-in – not so on the latest model. Do you actually ride these machines?

Bob Russell Hi Bob, The point about the coolant temperature we admit might have been slightly misleading; when the wording was edited on the actual page to fit the available space (much like we’ve had to do to your letter above), the words ’warning light’ were removed – our error in not making the text clearer. With regards to the tool adjustable screen and the chain lock gate; they were taken from the Suzuki PR marketing wording, so were taken as being correct. With every review we publish, we strive to include a picture of the bike being ridden (although that’s not always possible, especially if the reviewer is working as a single man team).

Termignoni unveils sporty new exhaust system for Himalayan Termignoni has just announced an exhaust system designed exclusively for the Royal Enfield Himalayan.

The system helps the mini-adventure machine shed close to 2kg of weight, and offers a marginal performance boost. The performance chart posted by Termignoni shows the racing exhaust equipped Royal Enfield Himalayan makes 24.1hp of power (compared to 23.5hp without it) at 6200rpm and 31.8Nm of torque (versus 30.8Nm) at 4200rpm. Not bad.

Cut the 60mph limit, says review A review commissioned by the Department for Transport (DfT) suggests that the 60mph speed limit on country roads should be slashed in an attempt to improve safety on Britain’s roads.

The report also points towards the introduction of more average speed cameras and a lower drink-driving limit, as part of sweeping recommendations which aim to improve safety on Britain’s roads.

Specifically noted in the report are the dangers on single carriageways in the countryside and suggests slashing the current 60mph speed limit, pointing to examples where councils have cut limits to 50mph or even 40mph.

The report also called on ministers to “promote the benefits of average speed cameras”. Statistics suggest

that speed cameras have been shown to cut fatal and serious accidents by a third. Plus, reduction of the threshold for speeding prosecutions has also been suggested. Fines are generally only issued unless drivers are caught speeding by 10% plus 2mph. Road tolls have also been suggested to improve Britain’s severe traffic problem.

British authorities are now working towards a two-year road safety plan, considering the review’s findings.

Other recommendations made in the road safety management capacity review carried out by consultancy Systra, include reintroducing accident reduction targets.

A DfT spokesperson said: “We’re currently considering the findings of the review.”

Luckily, the cheek pads come in different sizes so I intended to fit some of the slimmer ones that SHARK Helmets can supply. But before I needed to swap them, the helmet’s original pads had bedded in enough for me to judge the fit having become nigh-on perfect. With its lovely soft lining, lack of any pressure points or any areas where it feels a little loose, the comfort’s first class. As well as the plushness, that excellent fit feels very reassuring. Fit is absolutely crucial to a helmet’s effectiveness when it comes to protection, so in that respect the Skwal 2 makes my riding feel safer.

Other numerous features make a contribution to life being easier and more convenient with the SHARK. The visor can be removed so easily for cleaning it’s almost untrue. With the extraordinarily hot weather the UK's been having lately, and all the bugs that seem to coat the visor so quickly, it’s good to know I can whip it off for a spruce-up so quickly.

On the same crucial subject of unhindered vision, the internal drop-down sun visor is a godsend. With just a quick tug on the operating lever, I can kill any potential blindness caused by the bright sunlight before it becomes a problem. When a bike-testing day lasts as long as they sometimes do, it’s great to know I can cope with changing light levels so easily. Fitting the Pinlock® anti-mist insert to the inside of the visor has made sure clarity remains

£199.99 guaranteed in cooler conditions too. Even if they’ve been rarer this summer, I did encounter some chillier moments during a recent and very wet late afternoon run to Wales, and the visor stayed totally clear.

Another plus point is the Skwal 2’s venting system, which allows air to cool your brow very readily. Overheating isn’t a problem with this SHARK. And nor is any issue of comfort if you need to wear glasses, which I occasionally do instead of contact lenses. Thanks to the Easy-Fit system, there’s enough room for the arms of my specs. It’s another sign of the Skwal 2 being designed by people who really know their stuff.

I have to confess to initially thinking a little less positively as far as the helmet’s unique LED lighting is concerned though.

At first I thought it was just a gimmick, but in time I’ve felt a lot happier about the extra visibility it generates at night.

Biking’s not always as safe as it could be, but with the brow and chin bar lights illuminated, I always feel more confident of being spotted. And that’s yet another major bonus of this well-equipped, top value helmet in my book.

Love at first sight

From the first glance I fell in love with this super-stylish modern bike; with its retro feel and looks it could have come straight from the 'Back to the Future' film set, or even an old 1920s movie where it could have passed for a small classy-looking motorcycle.

looks of the black version which had been supplied for this review, as I felt it had a more retro look about it – but that’s just my personal opinion. It comes with a key to operate the electrics system and has a clear multi-function display and an on/off switch. I found the latter to be one of the very few things that I didn’t get on with, as it was located on top of the battery housing (which was cunningly disguised as a petrol tank). I found I was catching the on/off switch with my leg and switching-off the bike’s power system accidentally whenever I stopped for traffic lights, etc. Inside the battery housing, the battery itself is a rectangular shape with a built-in carrying handle which unplugs so that it can be charged off the bike.

Full charging time is five hours, which Italjet says gives a range of around 38 miles (60km) and has a life span of 2000 charges.

The devil is in the detail

The front light is a lovely design feature in keeping with the theme of the bike with both front and rear LED lights activated by light sensors or manually from the digital multifunction display. I particularly liked the addition of an analogue clock which gave an easy to read at a glance display mounted in a brass top cap.

The saddle is made by Brooks in leather. It is super-stylish though not as comfortable as a gel seat, but one of those would not have created the right look for this machine. The handlebars are aluminium with brass-capped stitched leather handlegrips for comfort. Everything is topped off with a (very loud) large brass bell.

Powering on

This is not the lightest of bikes at 30kg; and until you get used to that weight, you could find it difficult to manoeuvre. On my first ride I found it hard to judge ‘pull-away power’, particularly on uphill starts. The electrical power takes a second or two to kick-in and while on the top setting you have ample power to get up even

the steepest hills, it does not necessarily go up unassisted – you do need to pedal. I liked the gear change on the handlebars and the little bicycle display was quite quirky, changing as you went up and down the gears. Top speed is restricted to 15.5mph (25kph) as with all pedelecs under current UK law.

The front forks have large double springs (something else which reflects the stylish design) which help to smooth out the ride; these along with the chunky wide tyres, all help to provide a nice comfortable ride. The hydraulic disc brakes are progressive and smooth when applied and bring you to a halt safely.

Honda to test swappable batteries in e-bikes

Honda has teamed up with Panasonic to start testing swappable rechargeable batteries. The partners are taking Honda’s Mobile Power Packs to Indonesia, where they’ll be used to power electric mobility products, particularly electric bikes.

Indonesia is the third largest motorcycle market in the world after India and China, and its government has been thinking of ways to reduce traffic and pollution brought about by the rise of the two-wheeled vehicles. One of

the solutions it came up with is to encourage the adoption of electric-powered vehicles, making the country one of the best places to test the batteries.

Honda, Panasonic and a local Indonesian partner are hoping to prove that the Mobile Power Packs can address common issues associated with electric vehicles, such as range and charging time. The plan is to install charging stations at dozens of locations, all of which will be charging several power packs at all times. That

way, people can go in, swap their empty battery for a fully charged one and quickly get back on the road. They’re launching the experiment in December 2018 in select locations across the country.

Students design longrange ‘Ethec’ e-bike

Students at the University of Zurich have designed an electric bike with a 250-mile range as part of a project challenging students to experience all steps of product development.

The result is the all-electric Ethec.

The body unit is equipped with a massive

lithium-ion 15 kWh battery. The motor is cooled by a thermoelectric system, combined with a direct-cooling oil stream around the battery’s cells. The prototype is fitted with a seven-inch touchscreen with navigation and is started with a keyless, push-start button.

In brief Tesla says no to e-bikes

Pioneering electric car maker Tesla has ruled out the possibility of making a Tesla e-bike. The idea of a battery-powered bike under the Tesla banner has been floated before, and appears to make sense. Electric bikes are a fast-growing market, particularly in China, and the relative ease of type-approving a motorcycle in comparison to a car means they’re cheaper to develop. However, at the firm’s 2018 shareholder meeting, the idea was very quickly dismissed.

EU imposes new anti-dumping duty on Chinese e-bikes

It’s been mooted for a while, but now it’s happened. The European Commission has imposed provisional anti-dumping duties on e-bikes Imported from China.

The Commission has opted for the imposition of per company targeted dumping duties. The provisional dumping duties vary from 27.5% to 77.6% for the majority of Chinese e-bike exporters with other Chinese e-bike exporters being hit with a provisional 83.6% anti-dumping duty.

Manchester to develop safe cycling routes

New safe cycling and walking routes are to be created in Greater Manchester (although it’s not clear at this point in time if this it will allow pedelec riders to use the system).

The decision came about after Olympic gold medallist, Chris Boardman persuaded town hall bosses to spend as much money on cyclists and pedestrians as other cycling nirvanas. The Beelines network includes 75 miles of segregated lanes and will be the largest joined-up UK cycle network.

Greater Manchester’s mayor, Andy Burnham, has allocated £160m of funding to the project’s first four years (around £15 per head). This brings funding levels on a par with cities such as Copenhagen and Amsterdam and higher than in any other UK city, according to Chris Boardman, the region’s walking and cycling commissioner. When finished, the Beeline network will connect every community in Greater Manchester, opening up almost 90% of the city to cyclists.

With the scorching weather we’ve been having it’s been my ‘go to’ jacket since I got my hands on it a few months ago.

It’s a simple but well equipped jacket, and comes with a full para aramid anti-abrasion layer (Kevlar) and microfibre lining layer for breathability – like I said, perfect for the summer. Additionally, there are pockets for CE protection on the shoulders and back, and room for D30 protectors on the elbows.

Admittedly, I’ve been wearing the jacket with an armoured base layer underneath – but if you’re going to

do that, you might need to go one size up to ensure there’s room.

There’s no denying the Bell Moto-3 Ace Cafe GP 66 is a cool-looking lid.

It looks almost identical to the iconic helmets worn by 1970s scrambling stars – but it’s equipped with the latest and greatest modern materials and technology, to meet European and American safety standards and help keep your noggin safe out on the tarmac (or dirt).

It’s not packed with an abundance of features though – after all, it’s a fairly simple and straightforward design, that’s been tried and tested over the years. Why change a winning formula?

The lid is made using a modern lightweight fibreglass composite shell – which comes in three different sizes, allowing you to get the perfect fit.

Regarding the fit, I did find it quite tight initially, but after around 1000 miles the padding seems to have given a little – and it’s now spot on.

It also comes equipped with a full internal EPS liner, and a removable/ washable anti-microbial terrycloth liner. And that’s about it. Like I said; it’s simple, but purposeful. I love it.

Honda Forza 125 and 300

On2Wheels went to Nice for the launch of Honda’s updated Forza 125 and 300 – taking the chance to put the pair of premium scooters through their paces.

First introduced back in 2000, the Forza has cemented itself as a powerful force in Honda’s two-wheeled line-up.

The first 300 model was the one that set the template – with its lively ride, abundance of storage, innovative (for the time) combined braking system, and premium-feel designed specifically with the European scooter market in mind; for customers who demand style, presence, performance and top-specifications

from their two-wheeler. While retaining its trademark mix of sporty styling and urban usability, the Forza 300 has constantly evolved – but 2018 marks the unveiling of a radically revised machine. Essentially, it’s following in the hugely successful wheel tracks of its little brother, the Forza 125 (which has sold over 30,000 units in Europe since 2015) – and as a result, the 300 is lighter, smaller, smarter and sportier than ever before.

Scooter siblings

The Forza 125 and 300 share a surprising amount of features and characteristics. Their styling, equipment and chassis are pretty much identical with the main difference being their respective 125cc and 300cc power plants (which, as a result of some slightly different layouts, translates to a 20kg difference in weight). From an equipment perspective, they’re well specced.

The clever Goldwing-style electric screen is arguably the Forza’s piece-de-resistance – it adjusts

smoothly over 140mm of travel and is designed to provide wind protection (with airflow directed around and over the rider’s head) to help reduce wind noise and buffeting. I’m fairly tall at just over 6ft 1in and I found the screen more usable in its lowest setting with the wind deflected into my chest, rather than at my head. It’s a really nice touch on a commuteroriented scooter and helps the Forza stand out from the competition.

Its seat height is 780mm, which should help make the Forza accessible for most and I found it really comfortable even after a full day in the saddle. There’s plenty of room for a pillion and there’s a decent bit of under-seat storage too, with room for two full-face helmets. In addition, the front left inner fairing pocket is lockable and also houses a 12v-1A charging socket.

There are analogue speedometer and rev-counter dials either side of a digital display that switches between three separate modes (controlled by a switch on the left handlebar); it displays odometer, range remaining and current fuel consumption; trip meter, average fuel consumption and timer; or ambient temperature thermometer and battery sensor.

Longevity and reliability

Honda knows a thing or two about two-wheels and from a scooter perspective, its Forzas are about as good as it gets. They’re well finished, high-specification premium scooters as capable as any other 125 and 300 on the market and they are probably quicker too.

They sit right at the top of the commuter pile. They handle extremely well, are fitted with an abundance of kit, and they are quick

(and I mean quick)! The 125 got up to 75mph and the 300 got up to 90mph with room to spare.

They’re not especially cheap and you could get a budget scooter for significantly less cash, but if you’re serious about riding and you want something stylish, safe and reliable (and can afford it), then the Forza’s the scoot for you. Plus, it’s a Honda – it’ll run forever, will be well-looked after by the extensive dealer network and will hold its money fairly well too.

If you get a chance, go and ride one.

You won’t be disappointed.

Forza 125

A1 LICENCE

The important parts of the Forza 125 remains largely unchanged for 2018 after being brought in line with Euro 4 regulations in 2017.

It’s still got a punchy four-stroke, four-valve engine with an ‘Idling Stop’, a lightweight chassis, LED lights, a Smart Key, storage for two helmets, riding comfort for two; but for 2018 it comes with the new adjustable electric screen, a revised instrument panel, LED indicators and an extra 5.5 litres of under-seat storage.

The Forza 125 is powered by a four-valve water-cooled SOHC power plant, which delivers 11kW at 8500rpm, with peak torque of 12.5Nm at 8250rpm. Although they may not sound like impressive figures, the Forza 125 is one of the quickest small capacity scooters I’ve ever ridden. It accelerates rapidly, allowing you to get the jump on traffic, offers sharp mid-range power for responsive roll-on performance around town – and most impressively, it’s got a top-speed of around 75mph, meaning it’ll comfortably handle some motorway miles too.

It also comes with Idling Stop technology that automatically stops the engine after three seconds of stationary idling, when the brakes are applied; then instantly re-starts when the throttle is twisted. It’s seamless and helps the Forza 125 return impressive fuel consumption figures (close to 500km from its 11.5 litre tank).

Suspension comes in the form of 33mm telescopic forks at the front and twin shock

absorbers at the rear (which are actually adjustable through five-stage spring preload).

On the road, it’s very capable, balancing comfort and performance with ease – soaking up all the bumps and lumps while allowing you to wind the throttle open and make real progress with confidence.

For stopping it’s equipped with a large 256mm single disc at the front mated to a 240mm disc at the rear, while there’s also two-channel ABS for extra braking control on slippery surfaces. It all works well, offering ample braking performance for such a small capacity scooter – allowing you to stop quickly and safely with little concern.

Its cast aluminium 15in front wheel and 14in rear wheel are clad with specialised, premium Michelin City Grip tyres that helped to offer ample grip out on the test ride – even when pushed to their limit. The Forza 125 is lightweight too, coming in at just 162kg, making it easy to manage at walking speeds, and really easy to paddle around in the car park.

Forza 300

A2 LICENCE

Honda’s Forza 300 has been completely re-imagined for 2018, drawing inspiration from its 125cc sibling with its lightweight, compact, sporty design and an abundance of new premium features including an electrically adjustable screen, full LED lighting and an optional 45-litre Smart Key-linked top box; and, in a first for Honda’s scooter line-up, it also comes with Honda’s Selectable Torque Control (HSTC).

The biggest change to the Forza 300 is its new sports styling and compact dimensions. 12kg lighter than the last incarnation, its wheelbase is shorter (not as long) and it’s narrower. But, it comes with a slightly higher seat height to help offer improved visibility and increased road presence.

The new Forza 300 shares its 279cc, liquid-cooled fuel-injected SOHC four-valve engine with the hugely successful SH300i, with its power tuned to offer an entertaining ride at low, mid and high rpm, plus excellent fuel economy. And it delivers. It’s punchy, quick and very capable. From a numbers perspective, it kicks-out 18.5kW at 7000rpm and 27.2Nm torque at 5750rpm, which translates to a top speed of over 90mph. And up at 90mph it’s still remarkably stable for such a compact machine. Its fuel economy has been improved too and Honda claims its 11.5-litre tank will return in excess of 370km.

For stopping, the Forza 300 is equipped with a 256mm

Under-seat space for two helmets. single front disc and a 240mm rear disc; and it also comes with two-channel ABS. I had no qualms about their abilities and within half an hour I found myself pushing harder and braking later than I would typically on a small capacity scooter. But, that could be thanks to another new addition to the Forza 300 – Honda’s Selectable Torque Control (HSTC).

Operated using a simple on-off switch, HSTC detects any differences between front and rear wheel speeds, calculates the slip ratio and then controls engine torque via the fuel injection to regain rear wheel traction. Clever! I tried my best to catch it out, but it handled everything I could throw at it in its stride.

Suspension comes in the form of 33mm telescopic forks up front and rear twin shock absorbers with seven-stage spring preload adjustment. It’s not the most sophisticated system you’ve ever seen, but considering the lightweight nature of scooter it’s looking after, it’s well up to the job, offering ample performance and exceptional comfort. I was bobbing around into potholes, bounding over speed bumps and across drain covers and the 300 barely flinched.

Its cast aluminium 15in front and 14in rear wheel come clad with premium Pirelli rubber, which Honda say help to offer maximum traction and ride comfort.

Admittedly, the weather was bone dry, the roads were in pretty good shape, and we didn’t really get a chance to really push the scooters right to their limits, but the tyres did help the scooter handle very well on a tight, twisty section later in the day. Regardless, it’s always nice to get some decent rubber as standard.

Lexmoto ZSX-F 125

Slick and shiny, proud and practical – and most definitely a sporty little number.

At first glance this bike screams all-out sports bike, but due to its compact frame (as it’s only 125cc) it’s like some bizarre optical illusion.

You can see a sports bike – but how far away is it!? Oh, it’s just there, it’s only small…

Appearance

Our test bike stood out in the bright red version of its breed (other colour options are available); the lines on the bike are sharp and pleasing to the eye.

The well-formed seat is both practical and adds to the overall look of the bike. The bikini fairing is slick and well styled, but I do think this machine could easily carry off having a full fairing.

The belly pan is a nice feature, finishing off the underbelly styling, and the hugger on the rear again adds to the slick look of the bike.

Centre and a side-stand, underseat storage and even a luggage rack – very posh! This demonstrates to me that this bike has not been built by

scrimping and saving on the usual bits and bobs to keep the cost down – quite the opposite.

The dash has a digital display which conveys fuel, gear, speed and trip functions and the red dashes around the dial as the rev counter fascinated me, but I am easily distracted.

On the road

I have to admit to my concern that the styling and general great looks of the bike were actually making silent promises that the engine simply would not be able to keep, to the point where I was actually delaying starting the bike up due to fear of impending disappointment.

This fear was truly unfounded; both Ross and I were present when I first struck the bike up and we both glanced at each other in what I can only describe as pleasant disbelief at the unexpected growl of the 409 grade stainless-steel exhaust system; and at that moment I knew this little number was going to be a bit of a wolf.

The single cylinder, air-cooled four-stroke engine is certainly able and willing to put the power down cleanly and very efficiently up to 70mph plus and maintain it.

The fairing does an admirable job of deflecting the wind and elements and makes for a rather smooth ride when behind the larger vehicles. The riding position is great considering the bike is kind of rigged-up as a sports bike; the handlebars are sat high and this makes for a user friendly little commuter with attitude.

The new ZY125 engine runs clean and smooth and I encountered no dramas with starting, idling, or indeed running (something some EFi systems can suffer from). In fact, I think I can say this is the smoothest Chinese 125 I’ve ridden.

The combined breaking system links well and does not give the unnerving front bias that some bikes can do if you are a little sharp on the rear brake (or is that just me?).

The ZSX-F also benefits from an upgraded rear disc brake and a mono rear shock to further improve the bike’s handling and control and gives the rider extra confidence in its ability on the open road.

The LED headlights and indicators ensure that great visibility is assured and I found the headlights and main beam spot-on during the night time rides (still fascinated with the rev counter display though)!

This is one of those 125cc bikes that you are actually quite proud to be riding; its slick looks and beefy sounds make it a bit of a head-turner, but for the right reasons. You could happily park this bike up alongside some of its larger counterparts without feeling out of place; sure they may leave you on the straights, but you’ll get past them when they stop for fuel!

Myth busting With helmets being such an essential piece of kit for bikers, it’s hardly a surprise that there are lots views on what is or isn’t good for your lid. A lot of these stories are little more than old wives’ tales, but it can be difficult to separate the truth from the myths.

MYTH: I dropped my helmet on the floor when I was carrying it, my mate says it’s still okay to use – is it?

FALSE: We’d always suggest erring of the side of caution and never risking it. There’s no set formula as to whether the helmet will be fine or not so I’d suggest taking it back to your local dealer, where you bought it, for an initial look. If the dealer suggests it, you can send it to the manufacturer for an inspection.

MYTH: My friend told me that sticking stickers on your helmet damages it.

FALSE: This is a myth that dates back to when Polycarbonate injected shells came out. Stickers, paints and other solvents could damage the shell and components and compromise the safety of the helmet. Now, shells will have a UV Protective clear coat of lacquer on them which won’t be affected by a sticker. I’d suggest that you read the manual for your helmet to double check, and if in doubt, ask in your dealership.

MYTH: Having an internal sun-visor makes a helmet less protective.

FALSE: That’s the simple answer.

So long as the helmet was designed from the drawing board to incorporate a sun-visor, then the helmet can be designed to be just as protective with an internal sun-visor.

MYTH: Mounting a camera or a communications system on a helmet makes it less safe.

UNKNOWN: We’d suggest that no modifications are made to a helmet, so that it works as it is designed to. There’s been a lot of debate about whether helmet cameras and communication systems have a negative effect on safety, with research by the Transport Research Laboratory and the BBC revealing that helmet-mounted cameras may not be as dangerous to the wearer as previously feared. The tests were done on a range of climbing helmets, so testing would need to be done specifically on motorcycle helmets with a range of cameras and mounting points to get a true reflection.

How to pick a lid that’s right for you

Wearing a helmet is the easiest way to avoid life-threatening injuries while you ride a motorcycle.

And although it’s only one small part of motorcycle safety gear, it’s arguably the most important.

THE ANATOMY OF A HELMET Helmets are pretty simple pieces of kit, but the devil’s in the detail. Do you want yours to have an internal sun visor or removable liner? Or would you like it as light as possible?

All of these are possible, but having everything in one helmet might just push the price up a bit.

FEEL THE WIND IN YOUR HAIR: Good ventilation is essential to keep your head cool in the summer and the visor mist-free in the winter. Vents are usually located in the chin, the top of the helmet and at the back.

FRESH AS A DAISY: Most new helmets have a removable and washable lining, but it’s best to check before buying. Keeping the lining clean will not only make the helmet less pongy, but also extend its lifespan.

HEAVY HEAD? Weight matters. When you’re trying a helmet on, move your head around to see if it feels heavy and if there’s more stress on your neck muscles than you’re happy with.

MATERIALISTIC? TOO RIGHT! The outer shell of the helmet can be made from various different materials, with the main difference being weight and strength. Polycarbonate, fibreglass and carbon fibre are all popular options, with the latter being the lightest, strongest and therefore the most expensive.

SHADES OR SUN VISOR? Some helmets have internal sun visors that can be used whether the main visor is in the up or down position, while others feature an external sun visor or a tinted lens that you can attach to the visor.

As a cheap alternative, grab a pair of shades before you hit the road.

AS SHARP AS THEY COME: The main purpose of the helmet is to protect your noggin in case you have an accident. To get a good idea of how safe any helmet is, have a look at the government-run SHARP website (sharp.direct.gov.uk) that publishes independent crash test results of helmets sold in the UK.

CLEAR VISION: Having a Pinlock lens or a similar anti-fogging system on your visor makes a huge difference. Keeping the visor mist-free will make riding easier, safer and more fun.

TWO EYES GOOD, FOUR EYES BETTER: If you wear glasses when you ride, make sure that they fit well under the helmet. You’ll soon regret buying a helmet that constantly pushes your glasses up or down as you’re riding along. It’s also worth checking that the internal sun visor doesn’t catch your specs (if the helmet has one, of course).

2018 Yamaha Tricity 125 A thoroughly practical three-wheeled scooter.

It’s been said that ‘two’s company, three’s a crowd’, but under no circumstwances did I feel crowded by the extra wheel that Yamaha have weaved their magic on.

My first look at the Tricity made me interested if a little bit sceptical; I felt inquisitive nevertheless. This was to be a step onto (or should I say into) a machine-type I’ve not ridden before.

Three wheels on this wagon and I cannot see myself rolling on. My first impression was that it looked kind of like a praying mantis from the front, poised to strike-out with its front wheels. Even from the side its front still has that mantis look, but the back was standard scooter. This isn’t going to feel right is it? That front end’s going to be heavy and cumbersome. No filtering anymore, too wide, no freedom to zip and zoom. That extra weight is going to make it sluggish and loathsome to ride in town, even

worse on the open road. Oh hang on, has Yamaha reached an agreement with a tyre manufacturer to shift irregular, rarely used sized tyres, they have stockpiled?

Dispersing the worries

No, that’s all about as wrong as could be. I had misconceptions, worries, even full-blown doubts, but this bike has a strong backbone and has been developed with practical usage in mind. From the outset the Tricity has had full-blown development at its core. And it’s certainly not just a weekend idea bolted together due to an extra order of wheels being delivered, or some mad scientist in a lab coat looking at the mathematics on a blackboard and making two become three while trying to look like Carol Vorderman.

The team that built the Tricity was headed-up by project leader Kazuhisa Takano who’s been in the development department for race machines like the YZR500 and the YZR-M1 that Valentino Rossi raced!

He’s quoted as saying: “I actually have a sort of personal obsession with linked mechanisms and suspension structures and did a lot of research on this; not only by computer simulation, but also by making mock-ups with chopsticks or paper models! In the end we found a variation that moved and functioned very well. This was a parallelogram link mechanism, combined with telescopic suspension which gives a very natural feeling to the ride and is an extremely refined piece of technology in the field of motorcycles.”

What’s apparent initially is the weight (or lack of it). That feeling of an

over-engineered, heavy, clumsy, lump just isn’t there. This scooter doesn’t come with the standing lock (the ability to lock the front wheels upright) that’s fitted to many three wheel scooters out there and which helps with the ability to ride them on a car licence. As for the sometimes unclear regulation and licence laws for three wheelers; after a check, a double check and a chat with the office elder (Mau) we concur that the Trinity falls into the category of needing an A1 motorcycle licence to ride. You cannot jump onto this scooter if you only have a car licence or have just passed your CBT. It did take a few mornings to get used to the feeling of the extra wheel when pushing the Tricity in and out of my garage, but that soon passed and you get used to the feel really quickly.

The illusion of weight at the front end is more than dispelled once on the road. The clever tech’s at Yamaha have hit the 50:50 weight distribution button square on and within the first couple of miles its abilities are unfurled before you.

It’s not as nippy as some scooters in the 125cc bracket, but the engine provides more than enough power to

keep up with urban traffic. The feel is not what you’d initially expect. You may think (as I did) that this would be a heavy, cumbersome unit to wrestle around. You could even think that it would feel wayward (possibly disconnected and numb). This is not the case at all; riding along the road it feels so close to that of a normal 125cc scooter that you soon drop into a normal riding style in no time whatsoever. Initially I did still have some misconceptions, but the Tricity washed them away rapidly. Its front end (due to the well-placed centre of gravity and twin tyres which are slightly narrower than standard) is light, but not washy.

The suspension and chassis are particularly well balanced with no undue feelings of being disconnected from what’s happening under those two front tyres, which do give a larger surface contact area; not too stiff or floaty in feel, but planted and direct.

Its balanced braking (tested on a private road away from traffic) is an almost gravity-defying, physics bending experience. That increased surface area of rubber creating

friction on the road and obviously the extra front disc pull you up so quick that the first time it almost took me by surprise. The underseat storage is large enough for an open face helmet or a large shopping bag; a small-butuseful front glovebox and a bag hook between your legs adds extra storage capability.

I took the Tricity on a 23-mile trip, then tackled city traffic and roadworks for a few hours to try and find a weak point in its armour. I could bore you witless with my analogies of handling and efficiencies but I couldn’t find one thing I didn’t like. I found myself pushing the Tricity harder and harder into corners and roundabouts and found the level of traction more than surprising. I’m not saying that it’s flawless and did at one point, go a bit too far and lost the front end for a moment. Oops!

You get lots of stares due to that extra front wheel – not a bad thing at all. I ended the day with a 15-mile drive in the dark on narrow B-roads to test how the lights performed. As with nearly all the Yamahas I’ve ridden they didn’t disappoint. The dip

is more than powerful enough at what I’d call normal road speed and full beam gives a great spread and throw.

The indicators are also really bright and leave other road users with no excuse for not knowing which way you’re telling them you’re going.

The verdict

This is a well-balanced, clever machine, a true step in what could be a new direction. Looking at what the Yamaha engineers have crafted, you’ve no choice but to be enthralled, or even surprised with the outcome.

For the commuter this machine offers a real break from the norm; a stable platform and confident-feeling scooter that’s failed to show me any weak points. The front end is marginally wider than on twowheeled Yamaha scooter, but filtering is no issue and I gained in confidence.

And should you be caught in adverse weather you can rely on the extra traction to make your journey hopefully be just that little bit safer.

Zipping home on my Yamaha YZF-R125, I was on a mission to dump my bike, then swing out to the pub with the guys off my college course for a celebratory drink. Unfortunately, the only thing that got dumped was me whilst attempting to squeeze between a bus and a van in front of me in lanes one and two. I wasn’t going too quick (about 40mph in a 30mph limit).

However, the road narrowed at this point and I ended up as the piece of meat in a metal sandwich wedged between the two and then falling off. I’m gutted; my bike is trashed.

I shouted at both of them that they should check their mirrors until the policeman told me to calm down. I’ve taken his details as well, so I can make a complaint. I told them all filtering is legal. Who can I sue?

The bus or van driver?

A

Both the van driver and the bus driver were established in their lanes, presumably proceeding on their merry way until you ploughed into them.

The only person to blame for ruining your summer is you.

While filtering is legal it doesn't mean you can just do it everywhere. You tried to squeeze through a gap that wasn’t there.

Everyone makes mistakes, but shouting at others doesn’t make you right. My advice? Suck it up buttercup. And whatever you do, don’t put in a complaint about the copper, as it sounds like he did you a favour by not nicking you.

Big mile rides – check before you travel

Riding a bike on a longdistance journey is one of the most enjoyable things you can do on two wheels if it’s properly planned and you’re organised from the start.

On long distance journeys, you’ll be riding further and likely carrying more weight, so for comfort and safety you need to put in a bit of thought before you set off. To help you prepare, finance company Moneybarn, has put together a guide to big mile rides.

Before the journey begins

Whether you’re an experienced rider or a first timer, inspect your bike thoroughly before heading off. The last thing you want is a breakdown that could easily have been avoided.

Tyres take a beating on long trips, so ensure they’re inflated to the recommended pressure and that the tread is in good condition. Make sure all your lights, indicators and brake light work and if possible, carry spare bulbs. Check the levels of engine oil, coolant and brake fluid.

Depending on how long your trip is and what it will involve, it’s crucial to pack only the essentials so you don’t unnecessarily weigh down your bike.

Be sure to invest in quality straps to keep your luggage tied down and safe.

Appropriate clothing is important when riding, so check your usual kit is in good condition. Along with a full-face helmet, you’ll want clothing with armour inserts and visible styling, to boost your protection and visibility.

Plan, plan and plan some more

Bluetooth-equipped helmets can link to your phone to play music, allow you to listen to directions, and talk to companions, so this could be well worth the investment for long journeys.

Make sure you don’t have the volume too loud though –you still need to hear what’s going on around you on the roads.

It’s handy to have a paper map with you, just in case your phone runs out of battery or if you need to see a detailed off-screen version of your route.

Although it’s tempting to be a free spirit and simply hit the open road, you should plan an accurate route and ideally alternative routes in case there’s an unexpected problem.

Listen to weather forecasts before you ride, especially in winter, and avoid riding altogether in really bad conditions. If you get caught out in bad weather, consider stopping overnight somewhere if you have a long way to go. Pace your travel realistically, don’t try to ride for so many hours in a day that it affects your reflexes or decision-making ability. Take breaks at least every two hours to stay alert and focused, and Take a bottle of water before setting out to ensure you stay hydrated.

If you’re uncomfortable during a ride, your trip memories may end up being more about how much pain you were in, rather than how many unique experiences you had! Consider making some minor modifications to your bike for comfort: ■ ADJUSTABLE REARSETS allow you to relocate your pegs and controls to a more comfortable position.

■ CLIP-ON BAR RISERS will give your bike a fixed, raised height, which allows you to adjust your riding position and prevents wrist ache.

■ CUSHIONED GRIPS will help absorb some of the punishment uneven roads can send to your hands and wrists.

■ ADDING A SEAT PAD is another simple way to improve comfort.

FIRST RIDE SWM SM 125 R (Euro 4)

This SWM SM 125 R looks bang on; it’s sharp, definitely down with the kids and gathers a hell of a lot of attention wherever you go. More than I have ever experienced before, on anything I’ve ever ridden.

When Ross handed me the keys I tried to think like a 17-year-old and do some 17-year-old things: ride around town a lot; to my friends’ houses; go out and ride for no particular reason; go to Skeggy; and then try and do a ride as a 30-plus to see how it worked as a commuter or alternative motorcycle for an older new biker.

I’ve ridden a good few 125s recently, including the AJP PR3 125, the Yamaha XT 125 R and the Yamaha YZF 125R, so I’ve used these as my reference points.

Too hot to trot

My first ride on the SWM SM 125 R was on a scorching June afternoon; initial impressions as I pulled away were that this is very much a 125 where you use the gears a lot! First gear gets you going just above walking pace, and third and fourth give quite pleasant acceleration along tight, twisty country roads. The visibility is fab sitting up high above hedgerows and the non-blurry mirrors are a huge safety asset, especially on a machine designed for new riders. Controls are light and easy and the dipped beam headlight is always on; although the levers lacked adjustability, they worked for me at just under 6ft and the seating position itself gives lots of potential to SPECIFICATION

move around the bike, or to stand up and ride down your street, or a local dirt road like you’re an off-road hero, or stick your leg out in keeping with the Supermoto look, while the bars provide a lot of leverage.

This first outing finished in town and having adjusted to the way the SWM felt and went by that point I was starting to enjoy the exhaust note which sounds superb, particularly in built-up areas both on and off the bike. The handling, grip, superbly progressive front brake and linked rear brake are all excellent, and the tyres seemed to grip well on the hot Tarmac too.

The seat is pretty high and very firm; an hour is fun – anything beyond is painful. The fuel injection is jerky when small throttle openings are required around really tight bends where I felt this Supermoto-styled machine should excel. SWM needs to refine the fuel injection mapping supplied with this model to make the bike more user-friendly – the usability and accessibility gained for road riders and new riders in particular, would be huge if this adjustment was made. I found it frustrating because the bike looks so good and more than that, the fuel injection could be remedied without changing the bike’s character.

My favourite ride on one summery evening was through the Bardney Bends, near the Lincolnshire town of Wragby, then on to the picturesque Wickenby Aerodrome. The motorcycle performed well along some quite challenging roads. I rode around my earlier fuel injection woes by opening the throttle harder and thoroughly enjoyed the trip, taking the main road back to establish top speed performance as surely any 17-year-old would. Despite pretty low gearing, I got up to 67mph and held 60mph or above along the A-road,

despite several long inclines. I finished the ride with another fun blatt through my local town.

By the time I had to give the SWM SM 125R back I didn’t want to; the constant gear changing had become fun and it took me back to being a youth, obsessively changing gear to keep momentum. The visibility is epic and the morning before handover was spent on several short sorties into town and to the local garage running errands, enjoying the accolades from various approving gents, none of whom guessed it was a 125 – surely a good thing. The bike’s looks were approved wherever I went.

For a final blast I rode down some lovely country lanes on the SMW’s bigger retro brother, the Six Days 440 single, with Ross riding the 125, clearly relishing its solid handling.

The pros and cons

In summary the SWM SM 125 R is fun and it’s a looker with its Supermoto style and the red and white colour scheme not to mention its spoked alloy wheels, red engine rocker cover, water cooling, and upside down forks.

It handles like a dream, has superb brakes, grippy Kenda tyres, a commanding riding position, a strong engine for a 125, and safe mirrors – all massive plus points. The dash display lacks a fuel gauge (although there is a fuel light) and a gear indicator which would allow you to make better use of those six gears.

The seat is rock hard, but if you’re planning on commuting or riding short distances, this won’t be an issue

(the short tank range means you have to get off after a couple of hours to refill anyway); if you’re planning regular long trips, this should be more of a consideration and a teen holiday should be possible.

All that said, the cool factor alone at sweet 17 would outweigh any discomfort. My gripes for rider usability would be the fuel injection mapping which could be improved at small throttle openings and the over-hard standard front suspension which can be adjusted to suit (as is the rear shock absorber) and with more time I would have done this.

Looking at other comparable 125s, the price seems competitive for something with this much kit. If you’re in the market for a small capacity Supermoto, then the SWM SM 125 R is definitely a bike to try and you’ll probably grow to like it a lot.

It might not be as immediately accessible as some softer alternatives,

but it will probably hold your attention longer. My advice would be to try the SWM RS 125 R version too, as this gives even greater options like the spoked trail wheels to help you explore off-road trails too. It’s hard to comment on the finish after a few afternoons, but it oozes quality touches and nice materials on the important bits such as the frame, engine, brakes and suspension.

Top 10 tips for learning to ride – a woman’s perspective

1Try before you buy

Not all motorcycle training schools are the same, so consider ‘shopping around’ and don’t choose based on location, price or a promise that training will be quick and easy.

Websites, social media, reviews and trusted recommendations can all help, but a top tip would be to pick up the phone, have a chat and ask some questions.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is generally advertised as a one-day course, but this doesn’t always mean that one day is sufficient to reach the minimum safe standard for a certificate to be issued. Time taken to complete CBT is unimportant versus the value of having sufficient skill and confidence to ride unaccompanied.

Intensive courses can also seem like a great way to gain a full bike licence, but added time pressures can hinder progress. Laying proper foundations of basic motorcycle control can have a positive impact on future riding, well beyond passing the test. Consider the benefits of finding a school that offers ‘pay-as-you-go’ instruction, where training can be taken at an appropriate pace.

Helmets also have an important ‘fit’ factor, but if a rider has an extra small or large head, an ill-fitted helmet can lead to headaches and impaired vision. When buying a helmet, good advice is not to buy blindly, but to try on helmets and be properly fitted.

Helmets tend to stretch, so while it might feel comfortable at first, after a few wears, it may become too loose.

Doing this with a qualified instructor is wise, as they will give bespoke and qualified advice on the best way forward.

Research

Learning a new skill takes time.

Riding a motorbike is no different.

Training schools generally give good advice on preparation, such as what to bring on the day (i.e. driving licence, glasses, a packed lunch and adequate clothing). At the very least, wear sturdy thick denim jeans, plus boots with ankle protection and no steel toecaps.

Personalities vary greatly and it can help a novice rider’s progress if their instructor has the necessary people skills to put them at ease and to understand their strengths and weaknesses. This extends to explaining things in a way that is easy to understand and to act on.

Riding kit

Most training schools will provide the basic kit. However, the sizes are usually based on the average sized man, so for riders who are blessed with small hands, investing in a pair of well-fitted gloves can also make a big difference. Levers can be adjusted for individuals with a smaller reach,

For riders under 5ft 4in, some motorbikes can be too tall, making the whole learning experience more of an uphill struggle. Even where a rider is able to touch the floor on tiptoes it can still be extremely unnerving. Good training schools will be sensitive to these things and will ensure that smaller riders can learn on an appropriately-sized motorcycle. It’s a good idea to arrange to sit on a training motorcycle before booking a course. Skilled instructors will give bespoke instruction to help with adverse cambers, junctions and the potential riding challenges that sometimes accompany shorter legs.

8Well-meaning advice

All new riders have friends, family and significant others who may feel inclined to offer well-meaning riding advice. However, not all advice is up-to-date and not all of it is going to be suitable, especially when first learning to ride. Remember – a qualified, experienced instructor is best equipped to help new riders to attain the required standard.

9Adverse weather

Being too hot or too cold can significantly impact concentration, energy levels, skill and rider safety.

Novice riders need to master the skill of keeping cool and hydrated in the summer and warm in the winter.

Seeking advice is a very good idea.

The Vespa name is synonymous with both modern and classic scooters and the special edition Sei Giorni enhances the company’s nostalgic ethos even further.

Underneath the skin, the engine, chassis and other running gear are basically the same as you’d find in Vespa’s market-leading GTS 300 variations; so how did this uniquelooking scooter evolve? It’s time for a quick history lesson.

The 1951 International Six Day Trial (ISDT)

The 26th edition of the ISDT took place between September 18 and 23, 1951, in Varese, Northern Italy. The competition mixed off-road and on-road routes with a track session held at the Monza race circuit. The ‘Piaggio Squadra Corse’ (as the team SPECIFICATION

was named) entered the event on a specially-prepared Vespa 125 and won nine individual gold medals.

They also earned Piaggio the ‘Industry Gold Medal’, as the only Italian team to win the trial.

As a result of this success, Piaggio produced a limited edition of around 300 units; these were destined to be used in various regularity competitions and were sold for four times the price of a standard Vespa 125.

The 2018 version

Drawing its inspiration from that event, the Sei Giorni (Italian for Six Day) is based on the Vespa GTV 300 with its distinctive ‘fenderlight’ (headlamp on mudguard) styling, but with the addition of matt green paintwork with ‘No.6’ graphics on the legshields and panels, bare chrome handlebars, a smoke-effect flyscreen, five-spoke black wheel rims with red graphics, a ribbed ‘alcantara’ effect single sports seat and a black-painted exhaust heatshield. Piaggio also says there will only be 150 units of this limited edition officially imported into the UK, and in line with other Vespa special edition models, the scooter has its identity and individual serial number shown on a metal plate attached to the legshields.

While the scooter retains Vespa’s vintage looks and sports heritage, everything else about it is modern and up-to-date with front and rear disc brakes and state-of-the-art

electronics which includes both ABS and ASR systems. Vespa claims 83 miles per gallon for the scooter, which I would guess as being reasonably accurate, as it’s what I’d normally get out of my GTS 300 version. With a tank capacity of 8.5 litres (1.87 gallons) that should give you a maximum range of 155 miles.

The main instrument panel is in a central cluster at the top of the steering column and provides all the basic information needed; you get the obligatory array of warning lights, a digital clock and fuel gauge, plus an odometer/speedometer setup with the kph speed indicator marked out in large figures on the outside, with the inner mph figures being smaller (personally I’d have liked to have seen that setup the other way around, but that’s the Italian styling showing through).

On the road

Vespa scooters have always had a reputation for quality styling, handling and performance; so how does this translate across to the Sei Giorni?

Well, to someone who’s more used to a traditional scooter layout, the motorcycle-styled handlebars might seem a little out of place initially; and with the front headlight being down on the mudguard rather than on top of the headset, riding it for the first time might feel a little strange (like there’s something missing at the front end).

But that said, after a short distance, you’ll soon adapt to the scooter’s handling, which is not dissimilar to

other sibling scooters in the range.

It grips the road and corners well on its 12in wheels with the suspension soaking-up unwanted road surface imperfections and it all works well in conjunction with the ASR traction control system. Another thing that works well is the ABS braking system which provides just enough stopping power whether you’re riding under normal road conditions, or in an emergency stop situation.

Something that is really comfortable is that ribbed seat; however, the downside is that it’s designed as a single seater, so the compromise is that you can’t carry a passenger (well, you probably could – but they probably wouldn’t thank you for it afterwards).

Styling and practicality

There’s no doubting that the Sei Giorni has some very distinctive styling features, but do they come at the cost of practicality? That miniscule smoked flyscreen may like cool, but does it really serve any purpose, other than looking good? There’s many a scooterist out there who will avidly argue that a small screen increases the wind

pressure on the upper torso, whereas as full size screen will deflect that wind pressure up and over. And does having a front headlight so close to the ground really give you the same forward tunnel of light that a headlamp on top of the headset provides?

Piaggio says it does, but I still need to be convinced on that one.

As well as an inner legshield storage area (which also houses a USB connection), the scooter has a reasonable size underseat compartment which Piaggio says will take a jet style helmet with a little room to spare for other nick-nacks; Okay, it’s not the biggest storage space in the world, but this does help to

make the Sei Giorni a much more viable option for the commuter.

Summing-up

What you get with the Sei Giorni is a well-built, stylish, retro-looking scooter that has enough power to hold its own at motorway speeds, but is still tractable enough to serve as an everyday commuter machine. Would I buy one? Well, if I was in the market for an A2 licence bike that is versatile enough to serve either as a commuter, or a long distance machine, then it would certainly be on my shortlist.
