Legend of racing to guest star at spectacular show M

There have been a couple of things recently which have highlighted to me the way motorcycling has changed over the years since the things were invented. First was the picture we used on page three of the February issue showing contestants in a chariot race at a gymkhana sometime in the 1930s.

The second was a recent trial held by the Poacher’s Pre 65 club and reasonably local to my house. So local it wasn’t worth even hooking the trailer up, instead it was a gentle few minutes ride up to the start. This scenario would have been familiar to most trials riders years ago but it isn’t commonplace these days.

There are a number of reasons why this is so, the main one being trials motorcycles have become increasingly specialised and no longer do duty as daily transport. Lower gearing to cope with reduced length courses mean on the road is a pain and anyway, trials tyres are so soft these days a couple of work runs would rip them to shreds. The second reason is much more social, motorcycling isn’t an easy thing to get into these days and a chat with a motorcycle shop owning mate brought the revelation, he’d not sold a bike to a youngster for months.

Years ago a motorcycle was the way to mechanised transport for so many people, even if they were not into the scene, work had to be got to and buses were restricting. In those far off days the motorcycle scene was much more widespread through the social scale and the focal point would be the local motor club.

Such clubs would generally organise all sorts of activities – runs to race meets or other sporting occasions, maybe even trials, scrambles or grasstracks for the more competitive element in the membership.

Of course not everyone wanted to ride in competitions but liked the idea of a fun day with their fellow club members. For such occasions the gymkhana was ideal. There would be a competitive element at some, the chariot or pram race would probably be it; or maybe an egg and spoon race, or an obstacle course with cones, nothing too serious just an enjoyable day.

Maybe there ought to be an OBM gymkhana…

otorsport champion John Surtees will be in attendance as guest of honour at the 34th Carole Nash International Classic MotorCycle Show in April, and he’ll be bringing two historic machines with him.

In a rare coming together, the MV Agusta on which Surtees took the 1956 500cc world championship crown, and the Ferrari that he drove to the 1964 formula one title, will be side by side in the main hall of Staffordshire County Showground.

This year marks 50 years since Surtees became the first, and only, winner of world championships in both motorcycle and car disciplines and April’s Stafford show will be one of the few times that both

machines have been in the same place with Surtees, now 80.

James Robinson, editor The Classic MotorCycle, said: “John Surtees is a living legend. What he achieved on two wheels and four is remarkable. It’ll be fascinating to hear him talk about his wideranging experiences; surely he’s the only man in the world who was employed by both Enzo Ferrari and Count Agusta, as well as being Mike Hailwood’s boss!”

One circuit. One thousand bikes A celebration of motorcycles featuring more than 1000 twowheeled dream machines will be held at Mallory Park Racing Circuit in Leicestershire this summer.

All-star team is lined up for Classic TT event

■ One of the most successful classic motorcycling teams of recent years, Team Winfield, has confirmed its return to the Mountain Course in 2014 with an all-star three-man attack on the Classic TT Races presented by Bennetts.

The team had mixed fortunes at the inaugural Classic TT in 2013 but Roger Winfield’s outfit will have one of the strongest teams on the island in August with John McGuinness, Gary Johnson and the returning Ryan Farquhar riding in the Bennetts 500cc Classic TT and Motorsport Merchandise F1 Classic TT Races.

As per the 2013 event, 20-times TT winner McGuinness will contest the Bennetts’ 500cc Classic Race onboard a 500cc Paton where he’ll be joined by Farquhar on an identical machine.

Orienteering by bike in the Pyrenees Austin Vince’s Twinshock TrailFinder Pyrenees navigation event will take place this summer.

Anyone who has a twinshock bike of any age is qualified to take part. The event is fast becoming a must-do fixture on the classic scene with teams travelling from all over Europe to attend.

It’s two days of orienteering on dirt bikes over hundreds of miles of trails in the Pyrenees. The cost is £200 a rider and it is based around the Hotel Riberies in Llavorsi.

There is no solo riding so participants need to head out to Catalunya (Catalonia) by July 14 for check-in. The event itself is on July 15-16. ■ The first edition of the Pioneer Run book published in 2013 sold out within six months, leaving some disappointed, so a decision has been made to print a second edition. It will be A4 size, with more than 250 pages and 200 photographs.

The 2013 event had to be cancelled meaning the 2014 Pioneer will be the 75th Run, so the new edition has been amended accordingly and also includes more information from readers and other sources that have come to light since the first publication.

MacGregor Motorcycle Run ■ Details of this year’s Bob MacGregor Motorcycle Run have been released, with the event taking place on Tuesday, April 29, with guest of honour Mick Wilkinson.

Campaign saves historic Brighton Speed Trials The Brighton Speed Trials have been saved following a campaign by event organiser The Brighton and Hove Motor Club.

After Brighton & Hove City Council initially declined an application to run the event in 2014, its culture committee voted unanimously to allow the event to continue, so it will take place on September 6.

In just one month the Save the Brighton Speed Trials campaign generated more than 12,400 names on a petition, more than 7000 likes on a Facebook page, hundreds of online forum discussions and dozens of articles in local and national press, TV and radio. The man who beat the cars

Irish motorcycle racer, Ernie Lyons, passed away a few weeks before his 100th birthday. OBM takes a look at his historic achievement in October 1946 at Shelsley Walsh.

o make the fastest time of the day at any speed event is noteworthy but to do it against the cream of the

motoring set is, from our point of view, even more special.

We take a look at the press report from that

momentous day at Worcestershire’s historic hill climb at Shelsley Walsh in October 1946.

Ernie Lyons, riding a 500cc Triumph Twin recorded 39.44 seconds on his first run to make the best motorcycle time. Raymond Mays, acknowledged maestro of the Shelsley car clan, could not better 39.57 seconds with his ERA, which was the fastest car climb.

Lyons did more than this. He joined the elite three car drivers who have ever in the history of Shelsley made better time than 40 seconds – Raymond Mays, C E C Martin and the late A P P Fane. Not only did Lyons make the best time, but the six fastest motorcycles were quicker by about half a second than the six fastest cars, irrespective of class.

Shelsley, near Martley, Worcestershire is 1000 yards long with an average gradient of 1-in-9. Timing is recorded electrically and is accurate to 0.01sec. As an illustration of what one second means – just one second separated Ernie and Daniell, who came fourth.

On the day competitors had been permitted four practice runs. Lyons got below 40 seconds and Lockett, Daniell, Frith and Foster were in the 40-41s class. So, when the motorcycle competitors came to the line the following day they had had just four runs to master this torturous hill and to find the most suitable gear ratios.

With a snarl from the Triumph Twin, Ernie Lyons, in his first event since his win in the Senior Manx Grand Prix, opened the 500cc class. He used the offside of the road at the start – the first man to do so – to get the best line for the slight left bend just beyond, and was obviously hurrying.

He snaked through the S-bends considerably faster, it appeared, than any earlier cars or motor cycles, but his upward gear changing on the finishing straight could perhaps have been smarter. His characteristic ‘I-am-master-of-this-puny-machine’ style pleased the closely packed crowd who cheered vociferously a few seconds later when 39.44 seconds (approx 52mph) was announced – the first climb to come in under 40 seconds since 1939.

MAC (Midland Automobile Club) is the slickest of the slick, and competitors are dispatched as soon as the previous man has passed the finish.

The Shelsley surface, which looks non-skid is, in fact, a menace when wet. So much rubber from the spinning rear wheels – many of them twin wheels – of the cars is deposited on the surface that it becomes unbelievably slippery.

The two-wheelers appeared to be slicker off the mark and quicker through the bends, but lacked the high speed of the cam along the finishing stretch. But, given time, motorcycles can be prepared that will reduce the maximum speed disadvantage. Next year?

Lyons’ Triumph

In our feature we’ve included a picture of Ernie Lyons’ Triumph, dated September 12, 1946. It is the Manx GP winning machine and the side-on shot looks remarkably similar to the production Triumph GP of 1948.

There are some differences, of course, as Lyons’ Manx machine was a T100 modified with a few bits and pieces. A close inspection of the cylinder barrels shows they have actually been drilled and tapped for the cooling shrouds needed on the Second World War generator set they were devised for. Later models didn’t have these bosses tapped.

Legend says the factory bought up all old generators, or, did they simply use the patterns and re-cast?

On the subject of alloy, the Lyons’ bike wears steel rims in the Manx photo but at Shelsley Walsh it had alloy rims like the production GP. Also, on both machines, tucked away between the engine and gearbox, is an oil filter. On the face of it there should be few problems converting a T100 to GP spec – the factory had already produced a speed kit for the bike and it was available from dealers. But there would be a lot of onus on owners to assemble correctly.

Worn or worn out…? Part 4 What’s the difference between worn, acceptably worn and worn out? The OBM editor sought advice from the experts, using a Triumph engine as an example…

ut first the engine has to be apart. It might be the whole unit will disassemble quite easily and there will be no problems but I personally wouldn’t bank on that happening. It’s likely there’ll be all sorts of things preventing the parts coming away from each other easily.

Things like screws in awkward places, seized fasteners or oil baked on to joint faces.

In the case of the Triumph engine, spares are relatively easily available and even now autojumble stands have lots of second-hand bits. I’m guessing the situation is similar for BSA – once the most prolific maker in the world – probably Norton and so on as we go down the

scale in volume manufacture. Start working on older bikes then the availability of bits will decrease, probably up to the point where anything needed will have to be made. At the moment such work is beyond the scope of this series… if you can do such work, you won’t need me to tell you anything. In fact, the reverse is probably true.

All in bits

As you can see from the pics, the engine has finally been stripped... the screw heads had to be ground off and this took a long time. I could easily have hauled the lot along to an engineering shop and had the work done but

decided to set to with a Dremel and grind the heads off myself. It was time consuming but it worked and the cases came apart.

There comes a point in such operations where you sort of have no option but to succeed – with so much swarf from drilling and grinding flying around there was no way the engine could ever be run… well it could but it would be ruined very quickly.

Anyway, apart they came and the crank was removed from the cases. In order to stop the crank rolling about the place, I knocked up a cradle to hold it, two holes in a bit of plywood, a few moments with a saw and a screwdriver and there y’go. Not elaborate but it works.

What you’ll need

Though described as a ‘unit’ the Triumph engine still has separate compartments for engine, gearbox and primary side.

That’s the engine all stripped and laid out, the gearbox isn’t in this shot.

These pesky crankcase mouth screws finally let go and with the help of locking pliers were removed.

Initial inspection

Though nothing is even washed in degreaser yet I’ve given a few parts a bit of a glance over.

The crank still has the rods in place and I’m going to leave them there until someone from a crank grinding place has a look at them.

Like most plain big-end arrangements, the Triumph rods have removable shells in them so if the bearing surface is okay then maybe all that’s needed is a set of shells.

You may come across early con rods with white metal deposited directly on to the rod. This isn’t a problem but these days it may take a while to find someone who has the skills but they are out there. Other big ends, on singles and V-twins usually, will have a hardened crank pin in steel or cast iron flywheels with a one piece con rod and roller bearings in. Like any bearing, roughness and up and down play is bad.

Common makes may have spares off the shelf.

Still a mystery

With everything apart the engine still has mysteries, some bits look as if they’ve been abused mercilessly and others are in excellent condition. Maybe more will be revealed when the washing stage is over.

Most of the swarf and debris on show is from cutting the screws and will be flushed away and washed in degreaser. The plain bearing is clear in the pic, it will be measured before any work.

A guide bush will prevent the drill bit wandering when drilling out the broken stud.

Broken stud removal – take deep breath and proceed with care

At some time during a restoration it is likely a broken stud or bolt will be encountered. It’s a fact of life, it will happen. Usually you’re merrily removing a series of them and one will suddenly feel tight then slacken off… yes, it’s snapped.

Before you start running round screaming, crying or cursing and vowing to take up tiddlywinks instead of motorcycling, take a deep breath and proceed with care.

While removing the alternator studs on

this engine, two came out easily and the third was tight. A little heat was applied to expand the alloy, the stud started to turn, then turned quickly and left some of its threaded length in the case.

When this happens things may not be as bad as they seem. In this case the stud hole is a ‘through’ rather than ‘blind’ so it will be possible to make it go right through the case. Drill a hole in the broken end, enlarge it and then cut a thread with a tap – most times as the tap

is used the stud will turn out. The problem is drilling a hole accurately in the end of the stud.

What’s needed is a guide bush. There are kits available to do this and SnapOn makes a very good one that I used to borrow off a mate. Or, as in our picture, you could use a hollow dowel that slips inside the hole and a drill that slips inside the guide dowel and then drill using a pillar drill. Work carefully and all will be well.

Barrel studs are of differing lengths – yes, there’s one missing too.

As with all things where your personal safety is concerned, don’t take risks and if in any doubt about a part, dump it.

An engine seizing in the fast lane of a motorway is no joke – the times it has happened to me I’ve thankfully been able to make the hard shoulder safely.

The words in this piece are a guide only, how you interpret them is up to you.

Years ago I happened on the idea of wrapping studs and bolts in masking tape and writing on where they’re located. You could just sling them in the box and worry about it later – your choice.

I’ve never liked the idea of a crankshaft rolling about on a bench. A few bits of plywood, mdf or steel to make a cradle, stops it from rolling about.

Rotary valve Norton T

hough often accused of sticking with the ohc concept, Norton did have the vision to experiment with a rotary valve engine around 1952.

This isn’t to be confused with the Wankel-engined rotary Norton of much later but an alternative cylinder head on a Manx unit.

The Manx engine and indeed the whole bike was in the ascendency then but even so the competition were experimenting with multi cylinders, higher revs and it would even then be obvious much work would be needed to keep the ohc unit competitive.

Perhaps there was a feeling the rotary valve might just be a way forward to a smoother engine.

How the concept came to the attention of Norton race shop chief Joe Craig is explained by Roy Bacon in his book Norton Singles. Laurie Bond, famous for the Bond Minicar among other things, designed a rotary valve to sit on a JAP speedway engine. Joe Craig saw it, liked it and encouraged Bond to develop the idea at the Norton factory.

As can be seen from the line drawing the rotary valve sat cross way on the barrel, its carburettor on the end of the valve.

An interesting valve drive arrangement was needed to give the valve room to work. As the rotor was driven by the ohc shaft, which wasn’t far enough out, a stepped shaft was devised, using spur

gears. The gears also pumped oil up to the massive bearings supporting the rotor. Though power matched the standard ohc unit of the time, there were other problems with it, probably not insurmountable ones but Norton policy changed and the project was shelved.

Essential reading Pooks Motor Bookshop

Is the day of the traditional book gone? Not in the slightest reckons Mick Payne as he visits Pooks.

S

o many people try to convince us that the paper book, magazine or newspaper is dying on its feet.

Everything it seems can be downloaded to a mobile phone, tablet, e-reader or laptop; you can even get your favourite titles from Mortons in this manner. (Yes this includes OBM). What these end users do not realise, or perhaps even care, is that the printed word has a tactile quality about it that an electronic device can never have.

Thankfully there are still those that do not subscribe to this theory, one such is Pooks Motor Bookshop of Leicestershire, you’ll find an ad on the back page of this very paper. It is very much a family business, with Barrie Pook forming it by basically selling some of his duplicated material.

Old hosiery factory

Originally operating from home, the company moved to its present site in Rothley in about 1980. “It was an old hosiery factory that dad managed to buy when it closed down,” explained Barrie’s son John. The other partner is John’s sister Alison who is the pricing expert. “I spend an awful lot of time on the internet checking prices so I know just where to pitch our stock.” What a stock it is too, room upon room of literature, stored in plastic crates, files, shelves and boxes. For anyone familiar with Harry Potter it is like being transported to DiaCon Alley.

OBM was fortunate enough to get the grand tour, starting with the, as yet, unsorted stock stored in an old social club. Alison pointed to a small mountain of crates in the corner and explained: “That was a job lot, the person who sold it to us was adamant that it was all or nothing. In this instance we are not even sure what we have bought until I start sorting through it.” A mammoth task for anyone.

Other stock is more predictable, some is bought from other booksellers, some of whom have ceased to trade and some is from enthusiasts selling off their collections.

We were then taken to meet Barrie in his ‘shed’. It’s an agricultural barn and is well insulated and dry – it used to house a tennis court. What it now contains is a hoard of collectables, the like of which I have never seen outside of a museum. “It’s all eventually going up for sale,” he said. “I’m not getting any younger and I can’t take it with me, so it may as well be sold.” There is almost

everything in there from enamel advertising signs to Meccano models through vintage radios and several cars.

It was then back to Fowke Street and the shop, which is no less mind boggling. It was John’s turn to show us round. “This is where we keep all the sales brochures,” he said, pointing to neat rows of boxes subdivided by marque and model. This was just the front of the shop however and there is a lot more to see than sales brochures. Oh yes indeed. I was again staggered by the sheer volume of stock as John led me back into the old factory.

For several of the old brick built units it was literally wall to wall and floor to ceiling storage. Workshop manuals here, parts books next to them and above bound volumes of The Motor Cycle from the early vintage years. Further back still were Dexion shelves loaded with more modern books

make by make; several copies of each in many cases. Above all this are early enamelled signs. “They are all part of dad’s collection,” explained John. To think this all began with Barrie Pook selling off some of his duplicate items. Staggering.

Back in the front of the shop a customer came in requesting a Moto Guzzi workshop manual and John disappeared into the labyrinth to return with two different copies one of which was duly sold. When I queried the ‘filing system’ he explained that it is all in his and Alison’s head. In spite of the random appearance they can lay their hands on a book instantly.

So, if you need a book, be it car or motorcycle, Pooks Books is well worth a visit with ample parking outside, but if you can’t make it in person a phone call to either John or Alison will have them searching for the title. Or indeed if you have something you would like to sell get in touch, they buy anything from a single item to a recent 1600 book job lot. They also take in the major shows at Stafford. “Our presence there is as much about advertising the business as it is with selling,” said John and there is an eBay shop if you’d rather shop that way, search for ‘motoringmagpie’. To my mind though nothing could beat a trip to the shop.

“Waterstones it isn’t,” admitted John, while Alison added: “It’s a bit like an amoeba, it just sort of spreads.” It is however a rare experience; try it!

The book is dead, long live the book.
