Pile of bits Black Prince breaks world record at Bonhams’ summer sale

A

1955 998cc Vincent Black Prince project caused a bidding frenzy at Bonhams’ ‘Banbury Run’ Summer Classic Sale on Saturday, June 7, when two telephone bidders battled to own it.

Both had a personal attachment to the bike, one having yearned for a highperformance Black Prince since he’d owned a Black Knight in his youth, and the other – the eventual winner at £91,000, almost four times the estimate – sharing a birth year with the bike and wanting the Prince for his birthday.

Three more Vincents under auction all beat their estimates, a 1951 998cc Vincent Black Shadow project achieving £54,050; a 1951 998cc Vincent Rapide project £28,175 and a 1952 998cc Vincent Rapide project £23,000.

Another highlight was the sale of two Brough Superiors from motorcycling’s betweenthe-wars golden age. Owned by

the Myerscough family, a 1928/31 Brough Superior Overhead 680 achieved £33,350 and a 1935 1096cc 1150hp £48,300.

Two Rudge Multis also brought interesting results, a fine original example making £26,450 and a very rusty barnfind example that once belonged to King Onyeama of Eke, Nigeria, a mere £4830.

The world’s fastest Velo A recent issue of Fishtail, the journal of the Velocette Owners’ Club, pictured Stuart Hooper on the streamlined Velocette Venom, enlarged to 650cc, on which he attained a speed of 183.374mph during South Australia’s Lake Gairdner Speed Week from Friday, February 28 to Friday, March 7.

The story, sent by courtesy of Stuart, Dennis Quinlan and Fishtail Down Under, had almost as much drama as the box office hit, The World’s Fastest Indian, starring Anthony Hopkins.

After a last-minute main bearing failure necessitated the scratchbuilding of a new crankshaft, Stuart recalled how the first two runs were hampered by massive nitro backfires that almost stopped the back wheel at 150mph.

“After three days trying to find the correct set-up, a salt surface that was very soft and rutted, an engine that was starting to show metal in the oil and a rear chain that was threatening to selfdestruct from the sledgehammer blows of the big supercharged single firing once every wheel revolution, the organisers opened a new track which gave us our one and only chance for a record run,” he wrote.

The gearing was raised, the supercharger drive altered, fuel changed back to straight methanol and, with a last-minute start line ignition timing alteration, Stuart was off.

“With very little warm-up, the almost 100mph first gear launched us down the track with a light hand on the throttle (on an earlier run, almost uncontrollable wheelspin had started a serious tank-slapper) and I short-

shifted into second gear and again into third at less than 150mph,” he recalled.

“I didn’t use full throttle until I was well tucked in behind the screen, and the bike started to dodge and weave across the ruts caused by some of the Hayabusas and big cars that had run before me.

“The revs started to creep up past 6500 as the engine temperature approached melting point, and the Velo started to waltz a little on the soft surface as the final mile marker flashed by and I reluctantly closed the throttle on another year on the glorious white expanse of the Australian salt flats.”

This tasty 1951 Vincent Rapide was auctioned for £28,175.

Sidcup club planning bike night at Canada Heights One of Britain’s leading off-road clubs, the Sidcup & District Motorcycle Club, which operates from its own 50 acre Canada Heights international motocross course near Swanley, Kent, will hold a bike night at the venue on Friday, July 18 to bring the club to the attention of many motorcyclists who might not be aware of its activities.

All two-wheel enthusiasts are invited to the event, which will start around 6.30pm.

There will be a barbecue, bar and music in the big barn along with a bike display, bring and buy sale, parade, film show and other activities.

There will be no charge for the evening, apart from the cost of refreshments, and hopefully it will be the start of an annual event to foster motorcycling in general and encourage motorcyclists to get together, talk bikes and have a pleasant time in the beautiful surroundings of Canada Heights.

For those unfamiliar with the venue, it’s at Button Street, near Swanley, Kent, a short distance from Junction 3A, the Swanley/M25 interchange, and will be signposted from the A20 in both directions.

There is plenty of parking space, and a special area for visitors to put their bikes on display. Preference will be given to those in original condition, different or unique, road and competition machines alike.

The Sidcup & District Motorcycle Club runs motocross, enduro, hare and hounds and motorcycle trials including the renowned Jack Thompson British Bike Trial and a round of the Maxxius British Motocross Championship each year.

Special guest at the 70s Bike Day at London’s Ace Cafe on Sunday, July 20 will be Eric Patterson, who’ll be firing up his unique Vincent-powered ‘Viscount’ motorcycle before taking it to the USA to compete in this year’s Bonneville Speed Trials.

Eric, who organises bike jumbles throughout the year at Kempton Park, already holds a number of Bonneville records on machines including his JAP V-twin-powered, Norton Featherbed-framed special and Brough Superiors.

This year he’ll be going for four 1000cc records with the Viscount: modified pushrod ‘fuel’ (140.76mph); modified vintage, partially streamlined, gasoline (123.25mph); modified pre1979 ‘fuel’ class and modified pre-

1979 partially streamlined class.

Originally built by Peter Darvill, the salt-going Viscount was the first of only 10 ever made. It consists of a 1951 V-twin Vincent engine in a Manx Norton rolling chassis with magnesium Manx wheels, and its provenance includes racing at the Isle of Man TT in 1956.

The engine has been specially prepared for the Bonneville challenge including a 12:1 compression ratio, special camshafts, a BTH four-plug system, special exhausts, clutch, belt drive and reworked manifolds to take a pair of Gardiner carburettors.

The bike has Hagon suspension and specially built alloy rims, aluminium fuel and oil tanks and, of course, clipon bars.

Guzzi V8 and Gilera four are Italian Race Day stars at Sammy Miller Museum Eight-times world champion Phil Read MBE, who achieved 121 Grand Prix podiums in his long career, will be riding some exotic machinery at the Sammy Miller Museum’s Italian Race Bike Day on Sunday, July 20 and signing copies of his new book, Rebel Read.

No fewer than 36 classic racing motorcycles are expected, along with many static displays, club stands and a barbecue.

f you fancy a good day out this month, why not head towards Ipswich and find your way to Great Blakenham village hall (IP6 0NJ) on July 20 between 10am and 3pm?

Situated just off the A14, the village hall will play host to one of the classic Japanese scene’s best-kept secrets. If you like your period bikes, this has to be the place to see them, and the breadth of this small show never fails to impress.

Last year divvied up not one, but two early round-tanked Yamaha RD250s, which are now

quite rare and generally overshadowed by the more popular coffin-tanked versions.

Triples of all types are generally on display as well, so if Kettles, S1s, H1s and the like are your thing, you’ll have plenty to look at. The smaller Hondas are often out in force as well, with CB or CD175s along with exquisite CB160s.

Entrance to the event is free to VJMC members on production of their membership cards, and if they have parts of bikes to sell they also get a free autojumble plot. For non-

members, it costs just £2 per person and £6 per pitch.

Last year turned up a pair of clocks for a mate’s Yamaha trail bike, along with some desperately needed parts for our own Suzuki restoration.

There are good catering facilities on site, and one of the Suffolk section’s members turns up in a fish and chip van.

Eskdale road safety run entries invited Entries are invited for the Eskdale 2014 road safety run, organised by Teesside Yesteryear Motor Club on Sunday, September 7, which will cover some of the most stunning scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors.

Narrow winding picturesque roads, and some notoriously steep hills, will make the run an event to remember, and entry is open to motorcycles and cars and other vehicles based on chassis size, as some of the roads are quite unsuitable for larger vehicles.

As the run is strictly limited to 90 vehicles only, early entry is advisable at £7 for TYMC

Starting at the Middlesbrough & District Motor Club at Coulby Newham, the 100mile route will include seven well-known inclines with a compulsory lunch stop about half-way round, and at certain points participants will be stopped and asked suitable road safety questions.

Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club

It’s follow-my-leader as the lucky riders get a taste of the circuit.

also instrumental in obtaining permission from Dorna for the parade to go ahead.

Well aware of the pull and cachet of period machines, Dorna was more than happy to put the classic bike parade in the official weekend programme.

All parading VJMC machines were professionally scrutinised by a team that visited the club’s paddock, and Donington Park circuit also provided a liaison lady for the entire weekend who ensured there were no hiccups getting out onto the track.

Niall Mackenzie led the parades, which passed off without incident despite the undoubtedly suppressed desires of numerous club members to “show ‘em how it’s done” etc. In fact certain club members are still claiming they were out just before the first WSB race and prepared the track so that Tom Sykes could take the first leg of a famous double victory!

Joking aside, everyone behaved impeccably and the slick organisation from Donington Park, Dorna and the VJMC made the event a real success. Even the rain on Saturday failed to dampen the glowing pride of the 20 lucky club riders, and with Sunday’s dry parade running just before the first WSB race, no-one could have asked for a better bash.

The VJMC’s show organiser Andy Bolas did a sterling job behind the scenes, and with a further 30 VJMC machines on static display, Donington Park did the club proud.

The VJMC’s relationship with the circuit continues to grow, and the race track and club will be hosting The Classic Club’s Bike Show on August 9-10. From what we hear, the event is already at or close to maximum in terms of clubs and machines, so it should be a really special event for classic enthusiasts.

Replacement shockers with that ‘just right’ look Mess around with older Japanese motorcycles for any length of time and the chances are you’re going to need replacement shock absorbers.

Although there are numerous supplies of aftermarket suspension parts out there, if you plan on keeping your bike anywhere near standard the options suddenly reduce dramatically – and this is where George Milburn’s TEC Bike Parts business comes in. Some eight years ago George sold his bike shop and semi-retired with the aim of restoring motorcycles as a hobby. Although, after 40 years in the business, this might have seemed like a busman’s holiday, he got stuck in until he found he was stymied by the lack of any suitable shock absorbers.

With a penchant for 1970s bikes, George recognised that this was both a

serious impediment to many restorations and a business opportunity, so using industry contacts, he sourced potentially suitable suppliers, and the initial replicas of the Suzuki T and GT rear units proved to be a huge success.

It was the start of a global business with outlets in Brisbane and California as well as the UK. The focus of the shock absorber manufacturing is to get the units looking as close to OEM as possible, but with sensible improvements such as better bi-tube damping and the use of modern Viton seals for extended service life.

Prices are kept low through large-scale manufacture and by using common parts where possible.

At first the range was focused on frontline classics such as 1970s Suzukis and Kawasakis, but it has been gradually

expanded to include smaller machinery such as Yamaha’s RD125/200 twins, Suzuki’s air-cooled fours and XL/XR offroad and trail bike Hondas. With prices starting from under £50 there are some serious bargains to be had.

The TEC range also includes replicaperiod Suzuki mirrors with the gothic S embossed on their heads. A pair has graced on our own T500 for a couple of years now and they do a fine job.

Dig around the TEC website and you’ll find replica centrestands for Kawasaki triples and fours along with parts for Hinckley Triumphs and some rather funky alloy shocks with remote reservoirs and adjustable ride height at the frankly bargain price of £89.99. The next time you’re looking to revitalise your old classic you could do considerably worse than look at www.tecbikeparts.com

There’s an argument that you cannot know where you are in life now unless you know what happened before — which might all sound like pretentious old twaddle until you step back and look at the situation.

Take on an old motorcycle of unknown provenance, and what are you actually dealing with? Can you simply go steaming in without any pre-acquired knowledge? Would you simply take it out on the road and wind open the throttle without any idea as to how good the brakes were, whether the forks were bent or the chain were about to jump off the sprockets?

Obviously not; you need to reassure yourself that the bike in question is not a death trap at the very least. Therefore a grasp on its history is prerequisite to ensuring you won’t be!

Many younger modern riders seem to have little understanding or desire to grasp just a flavour of their chosen marque’s history. As the demographic of motorcyclists becomes ever older, you might be naive enough to think that the born-agains might have some empathy or understanding for the machines that came before their latest techno-fest. After all many of them learned their craft on the machines they now dismiss or deride.

Yet, these very same people will revere a firstyear Suzuki Hayabusa as though it were something highly rare. So when exactly does an older Japanese machine pass from the realms of venerable icon, morph to the status of winter hack and then just be classed as ancient junk?

This column poses the question simply because we’re now being told these very GSXR1300s, early Yamaha YR1s, first-off Honda FireBlades and the like are now classics and worth buying. So does that mean that any machine that came before must be of less intrinsic relevance?

Meltdown

Is a Yamaha Thunder Ace now only fit for cheapskates, yet an R1 really so much more desirable? Ditto a Honda CBR1000 or a Blackbird? How can something that was the top of its class, or near to it, now suddenly be almost perceived as worthless trash?

This columnist used to own and run a 1967 Yamaha 350, the first year the company made a full 350. In conversation with a modern sports bike owner some time ago this fact was brought up and I stupidly mentioned that the bike was actually generally referred to as an R1. This apparently innocuous statement almost caused a nuclear meltdown. Imagine my surprise when I found out the only R1 is the YZF-R1 and my erstwhile YR1 was a figment of my addled imagination.

When efforts were made to persuade said plastic rocket pilot that the bike was the forerunner of the RD350, RD350LC and YPVS 350, it just got even messier. Apparently twostrokes are illegal; they’ve all been banned and they only made them for a very short while. This must come as a bit of a surprise to Yamaha!

There was no point in trying to explain that the R1 was in the car park only because, 40-odd years ago, Yamaha managed to reinvest the profits of my R1 into the research and development that would lead ultimately to his machine. There’s none so blind as those who will not see, even if they’re standing on the shoulders of giants. Perhaps this explains why some sportbike riders nod when I’m on my FZR250 but ignore me when I’m riding a Suzuki T500?

Worcester club’s home-made HQ is a motorcyclists’ mecca

he Worcester Auto (cycle) Club, also known locally as the WAC Motorcycle Club, was founded in 1934 by a small group of enthusiasts who originally shared a small assembly room with the Worcester Co-op Cycling Club.

With Second World War hostilities at an end, and membership starting to grow dramatically, a larger meeting room was required to accommodate the swelling number of fledgling competitors in road racing, trials, grasstrack and scrambling events, not to mention those using motorcycles for everyday transport and pleasure.

It was the dawn of the postwar golden age of motorcycling, and rather than take the conventional route of many clubs by occupying the back room of a pub for their meetings, the WAC pioneers opted for a more laborious direction.

Motorcycles of all ages, including a tasty LE Velocette, line up outside the Worcester Auto Club’s home-built clubhouse.

This came in the form of an abandoned structure returned to Worcester City Council by the War Department in 1945, a dilapidated building situated on the former site of RAF Perdiswell, less than two miles from the city centre, which, back in the 1920s had been the site of the very first municipal airport.

Despite the appalling state of the 1937 WD construction when it was acquired, club members, many of whom were ex-servicemen and women themselves, banded together to progressively bring the club into the present thriving meeting place for those with an interest in all types of motorcycles, irrespective of age or origin.

How many clubs can boast home-built facilities like this?

One such member was the late Bob Currie, who went on to become Midlands editor of The Motor Cycle, affectionately known as the Blue Un, and who must have turned up on all kinds of road test machines.

Despite losing its very own grasstrack and trials course adjacent to the clubhouse, thanks to the redevelopment of the nearby municipal golf course, the Worcester Auto Club continues to thrive with more than 150 members, staging numerous social events in the clubhouse and on its extensive parking and lawn area, where the monthly bike meets and annual Star Bike awards are held, bringing motorcyclists from far and wide.

The club is also a long-established checkpoint and preferred resting place for riders taking part in the National Rally and, thanks to its extensive facilities, continues to be closely associated with the training of novice riders.
