One sure sign that you’re getting on a bit is when people start telling you: “You’re always living in the past!” – and it’s even more worrying when you realise that many of those saying it are exactly the same age as yourself!

While living in the past can have its comforts, it can be so easy to find yourself talking enthusiastically about, say, motorcycling in the 1950s or 60s only to be told: “Before my time, mate!” from a completely blank face.

However the same thing applies the other way round as well. Some of us can become so obsessed by the past that we fail to recognise the huge achievements of later generations, and might just as well be saying: “After my time, mate!”

Depending on which particular generation you came from, during

the 1960s and 70s the division was between “oil-dripping British rubbish” and “Japanese perfection”, but we all now accept that some of the sophisticated newcomers were mechanically fragile lemons.

How many of us glorify the achievements of the motorcycling heroes of our day without giving due credit to the immense courage and commitment of today’s awesomely fast riders?

The seeds of this ‘Prattle’ lie in the presentations of two prestigious awards at the Royal Automobile Club’s premises in London’s Pall Mall in January.

There could be no more worthy winner of the Torrens Trophy than Ian Hutchinson, the quietly-spoken Yorkshire lad who, after winning five TTs in a week in 2010, came frighteningly close to losing a leg after

his catastrophic Silverstone crash.

He then had to endure no fewer than 30 operations and face a long and painful recovery as he slowly learned to walk, never mind ride, again, and his three-victory comeback at last year’s Isle of Man TT is the stuff of which legends are made.

Congratulations are also due to John Bloor and the staff at Triumph Motorcycles for being awarded the Diamond Jubilee Trophy for their outstanding contribution to motorcycling and the motorcycle industry. While many hardened vintage and classic motorcycle enthusiasts will never accept the Hinckley products as ‘real’ Triumphs, at least the perpetuation of the hallowed name is on soundlyengineered products that have found marketing (and racing) success both at home and abroad.

I suspect that there will be passionate arguments from both sides of the fence on this one, though, so I await readers’ replies with interest.

John Surtees is made a CBE in 2016 New Year’s Honours After being made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1959 and an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008, John Surtees, the only person with world championships on both two and four wheels, was honoured yet again in the New Year’s Honours List when the 81-year-old became a Commander of the British Empire (CBE).

The award is in recognition of his services to motorsport and the charitable work being undertaken by the Henry Surtees Foundation, named in honour of his son who lost his life in a Formula 2 crash at Brands Hatch in 2009. The foundation provides vital support for those who have suffered injuries in accidents.

“I am obviously honoured to receive this further recognition,” said John. “Not only for myself but also for the world of two and fourwheeled sport and the teams I have worked with, and I’d also like to thank and include in this honour all who have helped and supported our dreams, ambitions and work for the Henry Surtees Foundation.”

Having already been made an MBE and OBE, John Surtees has now deservedly become a CBE in the year’s New Year’s Honours.

It’s dirt bike heaven – and much more – at Telford After a year of detailed planning, the Classic Dirt Bike Show at the International Centre, Telford, on February 20-21 is ready to roll – and what a feast is in store!

D

espite its title, the Hagon Shocks-sponsored Classic Dirt Bike Show at Telford — which many enthusiasts still call ‘Wrighty’s Show’ after its founder Alan Wright — will cover much more than off-road motorcycle sport in all its guises, and to prove it, trials legend Sammy Miller will be taking along a truly exotic Italian road racer in the shape of a 1964 500cc grand prix double-overhead-camshaft Bianchi twin that’s currently undergoing a refreshment service at the Bashley Manor museum workshops.

Will we hear it bellow at Telford?

Well, like most of the other bikes at the museum it is made to run, and Sammy will indeed be putting the six-speed Lino Tonti-designed masterpiece through its paces at several events this year…

But (in the language of those annoying workout gadget/steam cleaner/rock and roll CD collection adverts that we see all too often on TV) that’s not all – because Sam will also be taking along a glorious Brough Superior Pendine racer to give showgoers a taste of the golden record-breaking years of the 1920s.

Perhaps this is an opportune moment to thank Sammy for enhancing so many shows and events with some of the most exotic machinery in the world, all naturally prepared to the perfection he has always insisted upon.

And there could be no better show sponsor than Hagon, which in its long and successful history has produced innumerable grass track racers, speedway bikes, scramblers and road racers as well as sidecars – and, of course, Alf was no mean sprinter either!

Of course The Classic Dirt Bike Show will be like another Christmas for off-road bike enthusiasts, with everything they could possibly

imagine or wish for on display. Pre60 scramblers will brush handlebars with evo enduros, pre-65 trials bikes and twin-shock motocrossers, and a special 60-50 Decades display will commemorate the bikes behind the outstanding competition achievements of those years.

It will include the Manx Nortonbased motocross machine, kindly loaned by the National Motorcycle Museum, on which Les Archer became the last European Motocross Champion in 1956, and the recently rediscovered BSA C15 trials machine on which, 10 years later, Alan Lampkin became the lastever winner of the Scottish Six Days Trial to be mounted on a British four-stroke.

Archer’s Manx motocrosser, develop e d by skille d and determined engineer Ron Hankins, enjoyed an outstanding power-toweight ratio, and what’s more Les knew how to use all those horses to the full.

Alan Lampkin’s Scottish Six Days Trial victory was all the more remarkable considering that the ‘Spanish Armada’ of lightweight feet-up two-strokes was already underway at the time – and since reacquiring the ex-works machine last year, he’s been busy rebuilding it for his son, James, to ride in this year’s Pre-65 Scottish.

Visitors to the Telford Classic Dirt Bike Show will be able to feast their eyes on this beautifully sculpted 1964 500cc grand prix double-overhead-camshaft Bianchi twin that will be on show by courtesy of the Sammy Miller Museum.

Passion for sport But let’s take a brief break from the exhibits for a moment and concentrate on what the Telford Show is all about. In a nutshell, if what you see rekindles your ambition to get out there and have a go, or sort out some competition machinery you might already own in order to get back into action, then it will have achieved its aim, because a burning passion for the sport lies behind everything the organisers try to do.

You’ll doubtless want to spend time seeking ways to make your own bike that little bit more competitive, and in the trade halls and at the autojumble stands you’ll find likeminded souls offering everything you might be looking for, and – just as importantly – good advice too.

Those lucky enough to have booked seats at the Saturday evening dinner will be entertained on stage by some of the best raconteurs in motorcycle sport.

clubs organise the kind of events you’ll want to ride in, so as you look around their stands, why not find one that’s based near you and sign up for some great days ahead? Clubs have always been at the heart of the sport, and Golden Valley, which organises the EuroCup Trial (and is responsible, incidentally, for Classic Dirt Bike’s editor Tim Britton venturing on to three wheels again) will be on hand with entry forms and advice.

Cumbria Classic Club, which organises the Cumbrian Nostalgia events, will also be there, along with the Owd Codgers who put on such great trials demonstrations at the Stafford shows. This time, though, members will take it easy and just show off their wonderful classic machines.

Dot, Greeves and Cotton will be putting on excellent one-make displays, and if you fancy a go at riding in twinshock events, why not call by the Kia Trials Series stand and find out what it’s all about?

1963 to 1971, and its late founder Frank Hipkin came up with the motto ‘Built by Riders for Riders’.

At the other end of the scale, former British Scrambles Champion Dave Curtis will get some visitors’ memory buds going when he takes along some beautifully prepared ‘bangers’ including a Matchless G80 and a G85.

Then there is CCM. Alan and Austin Clewes’ totally original 1978 550 has only ever been raced in one meeting, and that was by Austin seven years ago.

A fearsome 1980 John Banks Replica with the full 600cc Mugen motor on which Simon Wynne won the Donny Schmidt Memorial Race at Brill will also be there to drool over, and a gorgeous 545cc Cheney Yamaha with a rebuilt engine from Rod Spry will also turn a few heads. It was originally owned by Lancastrian John Davies.

Moving back on to the sand for a moment, another surprise in store at Telford will be the very first

appearance of a 1924 JAP-engined 1000cc KTOR Brough Superior that raced on the Southport sands between the two world wars, but had stood in Ian Bain’s father’s old workshop for decades.

This historic machine has now been rebuilt after its long slumber, and Ian said: “My father is now getting on a bit, so I thought it would be nice for him to see the finished article. The Brough is the only one remaining from the six that were built in 1924, and we’re trying to establish whether it was Bert Le Vack’s own machine.”

Awesome as well as great-looking, Yamaha’s IT465 really upped the enduro game in the 1980s, but the one about which Classic Dirt Bike has been running fascinating repair features in recent issues was in a really run-down state. The aim is to return it to catalogue-correct, and prove that even disasters such as shattered cases don’t mean that all is lost. A mangled frame, cracked rims and seized parts have all been dealt with so far, and the idea was to have it running for the Telford show.

Tim’s last words on the matter were: “Technically there’s still time to have it running for the show, but let’s see.”

Hmm! Lots of competition machinery from legendary Spanish maker Bultaco will be on display, one particular anniversary this year being 40 years since Yrjo Vesterinen took the world trials crown, the first of three, in 1976. Still passionate about trials and Bultos, ‘Vesty’ is an enthusiastic supporter of the Telford show.

So there it is – everything you could wish for to kick-start the new season into life. Let’s make show and season the best yet!

Sprite line-up

Who said that road racing and motocross technology couldn’t mix? Les Archer won the 1956 European Motocross Championship on this fearsome beast that was developed by Ron Hankins.

Show founder Alan Wright is planning a display of many of the machines he’s been associated with during his successful career – including Suzuki, MickMar, Ossa and Fantic – along with a photographic montage of all things ‘Wrighty’.

So many more interesting offroaders will be on display that it’s almost impossible to list them all, but among the highlights will be a lineup of the Birmingham-built Sprites that launched many a star rider in both trials and scrambles. Based in the Halesowen district, Sprite Developments was at its peak from

This is the 250cc BSA on which Alan Lampkin won the 1966 Scottish Six Days Trial despite the onslaught of the ‘Spanish Armada’ of brilliantly successful two-stroke trials machines.

The C15-based machine was the last four-stroke ever to win a ‘Scottish’, and since re-acquiring it last year, Alan has been busy rebuilding it for the show.

It really is a show that’s fit for heroes

W

e’ve told you all about the machines, the clubs and the trade stands – but this year’s Classic Dirt Bike Show will also feature a galaxy of stars from the sport, some of whom will be recounting magical moments from their lives both on stage and at the Saturday evening dinner.

While many riders excel in one particular aspect of motorcycle sport others, such as Nick Jefferies, take to several completely different disciplines with equal success. At home in road racing (particularly on the Isle of Man), trials and enduro events, as well as being a thoroughly likeable chap all-round, he’s also been a successful motorcycle dealer and played his part in bike developments including the 1970s four-stroke CCM trials bike. Better still, he’s an accomplished raconteur who will have some very interesting stories to tell.

There’ll be more amazing tales from New Zealand speedway legend Barry Briggs, who rose from cycle speedway professional and motorcycle speedway hopeful to become a member of the Wimbledon speedway team at the age of 17. Several world crowns later – the first in 1957 – he still has a burning passion for life, and has been a gold and diamond miner, record shop owner, flat-tracker, ice racer, bike importer and multi-times world champion, he’s seen and done it all. He’s even had a crack at the Pre-65 Scottish. What a bloke!

Jimmy Aird went from being a farmer in Scotland to a clothing magnate in Barnard Castle via the world motocross stage – and all with the help of his mother’s raspberry jam!

The Scott Leathers top lad has been in and around motorcycle competition since his early days in Fife, when he found the sport a lot more lucrative than farming. With his fiery style, he was on CZs when they took over the world, and enjoyed lots of TV exposure in the winter scrambles series – and that jam certainly

brought a taste of home in the international paddocks!

Wayne le Marquand started his off-road career in Jersey as a young lad on a BSA Bantam trials bike, but soon found scrambling more exciting, and had won an MX championship by the age of 14, followed by a sand racing championship three years later. Coming over to the mainland in 1979, he won the first Haynes Fourstroke Series, but left the scene for 15 years to take over the family business. Now he’s back and featuring regularly in classic sports results.

A regular competitor in his native island’s TwoDay Trial, he uses Triumph twin power for trials nowadays.

Another speedway legend at Telford will be Eric Boocock. Since first venturing onto the oval track in the early 1960s, ‘Booey’ has scaled the heights of success and then done it all over again as a manager. His iron will was once Bryan Wade (No 6), seen in a tense battle for the lead with Fred Mayes (No 8) during an exciting demonstrated when, after a disastrous blow- 250cc Grandstand Trophy race many years ago, will be one of the special guests at the Telford up at Oxford that not only destroyed the bike’s show. Mortons Archive Photo. engine but also bent the frame, he was ready to race at the next day’s meeting in Edinburgh after returning home, rebuilding the engine, fixing the frame, sorting his kit, loading up and driving himself north of the border. Why waste time sleeping after all!

Nowadays Bryan Wade, who won five British MX championships in 125, 250 and 500cc classes, and was once christened ‘Wild Man Wade’ by Murray Walker, is the ‘Wild Man of Borneo’ as he runs bike tours in that steaming hot country.

As well as mixing it with the best in Europe, he’s run MX training schools and a successful restaurant business. His big opportunity came when Greeves competition manager Bill Brooker phoned to say: “Be at the factory tomorrow morning – you’re riding in the Spanish GP at the weekend.” And the 19-yearold came seventh in his very first GP! Enter now for one of the best runs in Scotland The Cumbria Classic Motor Cycle Club’s Bob MacGregor Motorcycle Run, following a Killin-Aberfeldy-Loch Rannoch circular route on A and B roads, with alternative off-road sections available for those interested, will take place on Tuesday April 26, at the start of the Pre-65 Scottish Trial Week, and entry forms are now available.

Pre-1975 motorcycles are preferred, and the start and finish will be at McLaren Hall, Main Street, Killin,

Perthshire FK21 8UH, 37 miles north of Stirling. There will be a lunch break en route.

BROUGHS IN THE ROUGH You would think, wouldn’t you, that after all these years all the known Brough Superiors would have been restored and be in the enthusiastic ownership of careful owners. Yet isolated examples still turn up occasionally in unrestored condition.

There have been rumours for some years, however, of the “Broughs of Bodmin Moor”, although they were thought by many to have been destroyed years ago.

Now, for the first time in 50 years, their actual location has been disclosed, and they will be included in Bonhams’ sale at Stafford on April 24. Not only that, but there are no fewer than eight of them! They comprise the ex-Hubert Chantrey 750cc BS4 with Austin Seven engine estimated at £80,000 - £120,000; a 1938 982cc SS80 with petrol tube sidecar estimated at £22,000 - £32,000; a 1926 SS100 at £30,000 - £40,000; a 1936 SS80 at £6,000 - £8,000; a 1937 SS80 at £6,000 - £8,000; a 1938 1096cc 11-50 at £16,000 - £22,000; a 1939 SS80 at £20,000 - £30,000; and a 1938 SS100 at £60,000 - £80,000. They are shown here outside the building in which they were found, and individually in the order in which mentioned above.

RARE BSAs Bill Nicholls in Whitley Bay has the 1958 BSA BB34A 500cc Competition outfit shown here, which was factory built and in single ownership for 55 years. He also has a dismantled BB34A dating from 1956 (the frame from September and the engine from May of that year). Both bikes have Gold Star head barrels and trials boxes, and Bill would like to know (as they are both factory-built) whether they are both Gold Star scramblers?

They have many spares, and could be for sale.

BSA C11

ARDIE

John Robinson has recently acquired this early girder-fork BSA C11 which now bears the registration 773 UXC. This is an age-related number issued by the DVLA from old unused London numbers, and John would dearly like to know the details of the original registration. He has, however, ascertained that the bike was delivered new to a dealer in Aberdeen. I have, therefore, directed John to the Kithead Trust, who hold surviving Aberdeen registration records. If, however, these don’t show the frame number as well as the registration, then the DVLA – under their ever more draconian rules – will refuse to reallocate the original number. It’s time the Federation stood up to the DVLA and stopped this attitude. Very few local authorities actually did record frame or chassis numbers.

Bob Brougham has acquired the 1952 Ardie 245cc two-stroke (below) which was brought into the country around 1997/8 but has not been used since. It was, however, registered and given an MoT examination at the time with an old-style V5. It has a twin-port engine, with rear suspension by plunger, and bears engine and frame number 315217. I’ve told Bob to get a Dating Certificate from the VMCC (the maker’s plate on the bike confirms the 1952 date) and apply to the DVLA for an up-to-date red V5c, sending them both the Dating Certificate and the old V5 but keeping a copy of both. Ardie were in business in Nuremberg, Germany, from 1918 until 1958, although latterly they came under the control of Durkopp.

Bob is also interested in the Mountaineer lightweight two-strokes that were made (he thinks) by a subsidiary of Rex in Coventry and subsequently in Marsden, Yorkshire. This make was never much in the limelight, and production was never continuous, although the company was in business from 1902 until 1924. They used many different proprietary engines including Minerva, Fafnir, MMC and later, after the Great War, the 269cc Villiers, and not as Bob thought their own engines of this size. All I have in the library here is the 1902 advertisement shown here.

MYSTERY PIONEER Eric Higgs sends me this photograph of a pioneering machine that was apparently sold at auction some time ago, and asks if I can tell him where it was originally registered, what make it is and whether it is still in circulation.

Well, the HN series is an old Darlington issue, and the old records are said to survive in Durham Record Office in County Hall, Durham DH1 1UL, to which I’ve directed Eric. Their records are held only from 1915 onwards, however, so the bike may be too old to be included. Does any reader now own the bike?
