hen a motorcycle manufacturer comes along and acquires the right to use a long-cherished name for its products, exactly what is it buying other than the badge itself? I ask the question in response to a letter from Ian Smart, who is clearly miffed by Hinckley’s claim that its latest engines for Moto2 are part of Triumph’s 110-year racing history. “Bloor bikes have a racing history of less than 20 years, and have no connection with the fine Coventry and Meriden-produced machines which do, indeed, have fine and illustrious racing pedigrees,” is his very definite opinion. With a readership as diverse as

our own, I often wonder what the split between those owning ‘proper’ and modern machines bearing the Triumph badge really is – and of course only you can tell us! Both the Triumph Owners’ Motorcycle Club and AJS & Matchless Owners’ Clubs welcome owners of ‘the real thing’ as well as those owning more modern products carrying such names to their ranks – and in light of the latest news about Indian-built BSAs (see opposite page) I wonder what the situation at the BSA Owners’ Club will be? I also note that, while the AJS & Matchless Club’s mouth-watering main raffle prize for 2017 is a lightly-

Over-60s trio sets off for land of the midnight sun Pensioners Syd Dawson, Mike Cowling and Sherwood BarkerGrimshaw set off on their motorcycles on a 5000-mile-plus trip to the land of the midnight sun at the beginning of July, to raise money for Andy’s Children’s Hospice in Grimsby. Syd, who lives in Lincolnshire, and Mike, from North Yorkshire, met over 40 years ago when they were motorcycle marshals for the former two-week amateur Milk Race cycling event, and they and Sherwood, who also comes from North Yorkshire, have been involved in escorting charity cycling events across the country and riding in national motorcycle

The very long days should give us the chance to ride the miles and then set up camp, even though it’s been years since we all pitched a tent.”

modified AJS twin worth more than £6000 (see news pages), the second prize is a smart little 125cc Chinesebuilt AJS Cadwell four-stroke single. When we look over a modern machine bearing a long-cherished name in a showroom, will we really be so besotted by the badge on the tank that we’ll buy a heap of rubbish – or is it more likely that the judgement will be made on the basis that it’s simply a wellengineered motorcycle and we don’t really care what the tank badge says? I can feel it in my bones that this contentious subject has the makings of a bumper mailbag for our next issue, and I’d love to give it a great

airing, so no matter what your views are one way or the other, do let us know – and whatever your mount happens to be, enjoy your riding until next time!

New ‘Goldie’ on cards as Indian giant Mahindra acquires the BSA name? Having bought the rights to the legendary BSA name, Indian manufacturing giant Mahindra plans to design, develop and produce a new range of motorcycles bearing the esteemed initials for the developed world by as early as 2019 – and the first could well be a large-capacity single in the Gold Star tradition. Rajesh Jejurikar, President and Chief Executive of Mahindra’s Farm Equipment and Two Wheeler Division, said BSA had been bought by Mahindra subsidiary Classic Legends, and that company bosses were now looking for ‘BSA stylists’ in a serious attempt to remain true to British traditions. Although Jejurikar expressed keenness for the new bikes to be designed, engineered

and even produced in the UK, Mahindra has other viable options as well – such as building them at the Mahindra-owned Peugeot Scooters factory in France. Among the other subsidiaries that Mahindra could call upon in getting the new BSAs off the ground are its Moto3 race team development centre in Italy, where some design work has already begun, and another recent acquisition, Pininfarina. Jejurikar said: “India is unique, and the only other nation capable of truly understanding the classic British motorcycle. Through the British Raj we had a lot of British bikes sold in our country, and many learned to ride on classic British machines. “We are keen for the bikes to be produced

in Britain – that is our endeavour – and we want the new BSA to represent the honest engineering for which British bikes are so renowned.” Mahindra also points out that its key markets in selling the new machines will be North America and Europe. Despite the important part that British motorcycles played in India’s development, a continuing legal battle about the use of the BSA name in that country might well mean that Mahindra will not be able to sell its BSA-badged machines there. However Classic Legends’ acquisition of a licence to use the Jawa brand means that this historic Czech name will be applied to a range of motorcycles produced for the Indian market.

Unique AJW collection at Lakeland Motor Museum A rare collection of AJW motorcycles from the 1920s and 30s is now on display at the Lakeland Motor Museum in Cumbria, and includes a 1934 Flying Vixen and a 1933 Flying Fox that was tracked down to the Netherlands, where it lay in a completely dismantled state before undergoing a meticulous 18-month restoration. Other AJWs in the collection are a 1934 Red Fox racer and a 1928 Blackburne-engined experimental machine. Founded by Alfred (John) Wheaton in 1926, AJW was a tiny enterprise that rarely produced more than 150 motorcycles per year, and the models in the Lakeland Museum display date

from 1928 to 1934, Wheaton’s most successful period in business. The six AJWs unveiled at the museum brings the number of motorcycles on show at the popular attraction to almost 90, ranging from a collection of Vincents from the 1930s, 40s and 50s to a display of racing Superbikes on loan from TT hero John McGuinness. The museum’s manager Chris Lowe said: “I had never seen an AJW closeup before, and it’s fascinating to see different engineering solutions from the early part of the 20th century. We are indebted to the Wheaton family for allowing us to bring these rarelyseen machines to the museum for others to enjoy.”

This immaculate 1934 AJW Flying Vixen is one of six examples of this rare and beautiful make now on display at the Lakeland Motor Museum by courtesy of the Wheaton family.

Superb 650 is AJS & Matchless Owners’ Club’s top raffle prize A show-stopping 650cc AJS twin worth more than £6000 is the AJS & Matchless Owners’ Club’s main raffle prize for 2017, and the second prize will be a new £2000 125cc AJS Cadwell. Open to all, the draw will take place at the Classic Bike Live show at the East of England Arena on October 28/29, and £5 books of five tickets are available from AMOC, Unit 3, Robinson Way, Telford Industrial Estate, Kettering, Northants NN16 8PT (01536 511532 or email membership@jampot.com).

For the price of a £5 book of raffle tickets, you could become the lucky owner of this beautifully customised 650cc AJS twin.

Just to show that the AJS & Matchless Owners’ Club has nothing against bikes bearing the AJS name being built outside the UK, a neat little AJS Cadwell will be the second prize in the draw.

The star prize six-fifty is a no-expensespared special featuring stainless high pipes with exhaust wrap, a special chrome mount for the speedometer, Matador lever mounts with Tomaselli caps, ball-end levers, braced bars, a quick-action Amal throttle, Wipac halogen headlight, 12-volt electrics, discreet

black metal indicators, competition-style steel fuel tank, duplex frame, lightwe4ight mudguards, anti-wet sump tap, and a solo seat and rear rack. Finished in modern grey with highlights, the machine is tasty and practical, and will fit in at all kinds of bike events.

Aaron Slight will be star guest at autumn Stafford Show Former World Superbike star Aaron Slight will be guest of honour at the 24th Carole Nash Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show at Stafford on October 14/15. The New Zealander was as fast and smooth on the track as he was flamboyant and controversial off it, so he should have some entertaining tales to share with show visitors from his 10 years in the series. The show, which majors on the later Japanese and European scene, promises the

usual successful mix of countless trade and autojumble stalls, club stands and private entries, together with Bonhams’ auction, the Classic Dirt Bike area, Classic Racer Grand Prix Paddock and live Restoration Theatre. Advance tickets costing £12 adults, £11 seniors and £3 under-12s are already available by going to www. staffordclassicbikeshows.com/october or calling 01507 529529.

Charlie and Zach complete Rudge Ulster charity ride Multiple TT winner Charlie Williams and Zach Burns have successfully completed a 1035mile journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats on Rudge Ulster motorcycles, raising more than £5000 for their chosen charities, Classrooms in the Clouds and the TT Riders’ Association. Both the 1934 and 1928 models ridden by Charlie and Zach came from the extensive collection of Mike Farrall, and although the journey was relatively trouble-free, one incident

occurred just south of Carnforth on the A6 when, for no apparent reason, Charlie’s machine expired on a roundabout exit. Mike, who went along as back-up crew, quickly diagnosed the problem as a broken inlet pushrod, and although he didn’t have a rod of the correct dimensions in his comprehensive spares kit, he did have one that was too long and too wide in circumference. A generator was quickly brought into service to power an angle grinder and the pushrod was soon

cut to length. Charlie then put it into a cordless drill and spun it while Mike ‘turned’ it down with the disc grinder. The bike was soon running again, and the riders had no more trouble for the final 500 miles. “I’d like to thank all at Team Farrall for the tremendous back-up they provided, Jonny Towers at Moto Direct for supplying my RST riding gear and, most importantly, all the people who supported us with their generous donations,” said Charlie.

Tram-tastic Classic Motorcycle Day No fewer than 316 classic motorcycles were exhibited when, in conjunction with the Vincent Owners’ Club, Derbyshire’s Crich Tramway Village hosted this year’s Classic Motorcycle Day on Sunday, July 2. More than 1500 visitors soaked up the magical atmosphere as the bikes mingled with vintage trams in bright sunshine, and a provisional date for another such event has already been set for July 1, 2018. There was a great turnout of Vincents, Nortons, Velocettes, BSAs, Triumphs, BMWs, HarleyDavidsons, Suzukis, Kawasakis and many more as owners brought their motorcycles from the 1920s

to the early 1990s for the visitors to enjoy. The best in show, decided by public vote, was Terry Crofts’ stunning Norvin, and the best British bike was John Williams’ immaculate Norton Dominator. Clive Steemson’s 125cc Motobi was declared the best international bike. Johnny Kunica, co-owner of local firm Derwent Waste Management, which sponsored the event, presented the trophies with his children. Motorcycling legends join Surtees tribute at Team Karting Challenge Triple world champion Freddie Spencer, veteran TT riders Stuart Graham and Mat Oxley and Norton chief executive officer Stuart Garner took part in a moving tribute to the life of John Surtees as they rode some of the most iconic motorcycles from his road racing period during the annual Henry Surtees Foundation Team Karting Challenge at the Mercedes-Benz World circuit in Surrey on July 11, writes Martin Gegg. They were joined by drivers Damon Hill, Derek Bell, Alexander Simms, Scott Malvern and Oliver Turvey. Freddie Spencer paraded a 1949 500cc Vincent Grey Flash, a motorcycle on which John won his very first race, which he considered the most important of his life. He’d reassembled the singlecylinder Vincent in 1979 using

many parts from the original machine that he built in 1950 while working as an apprentice at the Stevenage works. He was followed by Stuart Graham on a 1959 350cc Ray Petty Manx Norton special, which used the same 78mm x 73mm bore and stroke as the Joe Craig works Nortons of 1954, and it was the machine’s first time out on track since a major rebuild by the Surtees team. Journalist and former TT rider Mat Oxley was next on a 1960 500cc four-cylinder MV Agusta, representing John’s brilliant association with the Italian ‘fire engines’ on which he won seven motorcycle championships and six Isle of Man TTs. Last but not least came Stuart Garner riding the low-profile Norton F-type experimental prototype. After purchasing the remains of this machine

in 1992, Surtees, working with former Norton works team chief mechanic Charlie Edwards, scoured the country to locate original parts, and they were fortunate to find the unique trailing link front fork with which the bike was tested, along with other key components. They worked closely to get the restoration right, and in 1998 the bike was finally run for the first time by John at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. After the moving parade, John’s daughter Leonora said: “Motorcycles remained an important part of dad’s life, and it was particularly nice to see the bikes out on track with the cars at an event that meant so much to him.” For more information about the Henry Surtees Foundation and future events, go to www. henrysurteesfoundation.com

As can be seen from this wide-angle view, bikes of all shapes and sizes turned up for this year’s Bike Life Classics Day at the Sammy Miller Museum.

Sammy Miller receives his unexpected award.

Bike Life Classics Day gets better all the time Well over 500 motorcycles of all makes turned up for the third Bike Life Classics Day at the Sammy Miller Museum on June 25, raising more than £1000 for The Stars Appeal charity at Salisbury Hospital.

Six trophies were presented – four chosen by independent judges for the best bikes, and two by Bike Life Classics themselves, which this year were awarded to Sammy Miller himself and BRT Racing for their

Allen Millyard and friends rode in on six of his creations, and the many other attractions included Norman White’s John Player Norton, a display of James Hillier’s TT bikes by Bournemouth Kawasaki Racing, two new Brough Superiors and the Viscount from Eric Patterson. A selection of classic race bikes was displayed by BRT Racing, and some beautifully-restored vintage speedway bikes were taken along by a local group. Hollis Motorcycles, the builders of vintage café racers, were also at the event for the first time, and live music was by The Treblemakers. Next year’s provisional date of June 24 still has to be confirmed, but already Burnout Bikes, Redmax Speedshop and Campbell’s Exhausts have already said they’ll be in attendance, and confirmation by three other companies was awaited as we went to press.

This gorgeous 250cc Ducati Daytona brought back a fond memory or two…

…and machines like this vintage BSA made an interesting contrast with the more modern classics that attended the Bike Life Classics Day.

The museum’s 500cc GP Bianchi, BMW Rennsport and Brough Superior Pendine Racer were all fired up to the delight of the crowds.

Dedicated to the preservation of classic bikes, the non-profit-making Bike Life Classics runs a group on Facebook and now has 14,500 members. They would be interested to hear from any collectors or clubs

interested in having a display at the Bike Life Classics Day, and all they ask is a prize donation for their charity raffle. Try www.facebook.com/groups/ bikelifeclassics/ to learn more.

‘Walk through time’ theme at Waterlooville Club’s big show Reflecting the Waterlooville Motor Cycle Club’s formation in 1928, the theme of its biennial show at Horndean Technology College on Sunday, June 18, was motorcycling through the ages. Guest of honour Sammy Miller MBE opened the show at 10am, and in the reception area visitors got a taste of what was inside the main hall with a well laid out display of grasstrack, speedway and motocross machines and a Fogarty replica Ducati. On a swelteringly hot day, more than 100 motorcycles were on show, and the WMCC’s ‘walk through time’ display began with a lovely example of a 1928 350cc Sunbeam (although one club member exhibited his 1923 770cc BSA outfit) with excellent examples of interesting machines from every following decade, before reaching the most modern bike, a 2017 Triumph Bonneville. The Second World War years were covered with a brilliant showing of military motorcycles, including German BMW and Zundapp outfits, and alongside these were displays from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air

Dave Bettridge’s 1911 Clyno ‘wicker basket’ outfit took the award for the best prewar machine.

This was the busy scene inside the main hall of Horndean Technology College during the Waterlooville Club’s two-yearly show.

Second World War motorcycles like these attracted plenty of attention at the show.

Ambulance Service, Blood Bikes, the Silver Bikes motorcycle school and Solent Advanced Motorcyclists. Guest clubs also brought selections of their bikes to the show, from flat-tankers to brand new machines, and Talana Gamah put on a fine display of her motorcycle art. The show machines were judged by Sammy Miller and the WMCC’s

Chris Jeffries, and Sam presented the awards. The best prewar machine was Dave Bettridge’s 1911 Clyno outfit, the best postwar Nick Kendall’s 1976 Suzuki ‘Kettle’, best machine in show a 1965 Matchless G15 CSR ‘desert sled’ owned by Colin Gordon and the ‘best club stand’ the display of German military motorcycles collected by Colin.

Italian beauty parade at Sammy Miller Museum The Italian Ride-In at the Sammy Miller Museum on Sunday, July 16, brought a feast of around 120 beautifullycrafted motorcycles, varying from a classic Moto Guzzi horizontal single to a stunning MV Agusta F4 and everything in between. A little red and white Bianchi single, with its swirl-pattern tank and lovely fishtail-style silencer, was a delight on the eye as modern large-capacity Ducatis, Aprilias and Guzzis rolled in to join the party. We’ll just let the photos tell the story.

Italian bikes of every shape, size and cylinder layout gather at the Sammy Miller Museum.

What a contrast this little Benelli made to the MV Agusta and Ducati standing just behind it.

What mechanical wonders those early Moto Guzzi horizontal singles were.

Ducati brothers-in-arms share a brief discussion.

If ever a machine deserved the title ‘aesthetically perfect’, it would be the MV Agusta F4.
