he Cambridge English Dictionary defines the condition of ‘writer’s block’ as “being unable to create a piece of written work because something in your mind prevents you from doing it” – and this affliction can be a particular nuisance when you have to prattle on about something every month, especially when you’ve already got 49 issues under your belt and might well find yourself struggling to find a subject you haven’t already mentioned! With Old Bike Mart, however, there’s such a wonderful fund of readers’ memories to gain inspiration from – many of them reflecting one’s own experiences exactly – that, somehow, the dreaded ‘block’ is never terminal.
In his tale headed ‘White knuckles, girlfriends and oily wrecks’ on page 29, Leslie Wye of Stone, Staffordshire, recalls visiting the home of a posh girlfriend on an Ariel Colt. Seeing the oily wreck parked on her drive, the girlfriend’s mother instructed Leslie put it out of sight in their pristine garage, where it duly leaked black treacly stuff all over the spotless floor – and after a day out at Trentham Gardens, Leslie and girlfriend never saw each other again! Back then, many parents would recoil in horror at the thought of their daughters riding pillion, and I can relate to this exactly. Back in 1965, I had a Velocette Venom special as my Motor Cycling staff bike and a girlfriend in Lymm, Cheshire, whom
Olde Tyme Run in Hampshire The North Hants Motor Club’s annual Olde Tyme Run will set off from Crookham Street Social Club, The Street, Crookham Village near Fleet, Hampshire GU51 5SJ, at 11am on the May 28 Spring Bank Holiday Monday, with signing-on from 9.30am. The 40-mile run will be for motorcycles built up to 1950; from 1951 to 1960; 1961 to 1975; pre-1985 British and European classics; pre-1990 Japanese classics and sidecars. A bar will be open when riders return to the start, with tea and coffee served all day, and ploughmen’s lunches will be available. After the presentation of awards, the raffle will be drawn, and all proceeds from the event will be donated to The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham. For further details, call Gay and Iain Craddock on 01252 676144.
I’d got to know after one night she gamely decided to take a pillion ride on the Velo without me even seeing who she was! Her parents were lovely, but the thought of their daughter riding pillion was anathema to them. When I’d call to take her into town on a Saturday afternoon, they’d insist that she took the bus while I went on the bike – but of course, once out of sight around the corner, she’d be straight on to the pillion as usual! Many such clandestine rides followed until, inevitably, time and distance (I had to work in London all week) took their toll – but happy memories nevertheless. Many lifelong relationships must have started on motorcycles, and

A TRULY ‘MAMMOTH’ EVENT! Münch Mammoth sells for £154,940 at Bonhams spring Stafford sale
Several world bidding records were broken at the International Classic MotorCycle Show at Stafford over the weekend of April 21-22 when a 1970 1177cc Clymer MÜnch TTS Mammoth was sold for a staggering £154,940, and a 1973 MV Agusta 750S went for £96,700 – the highest price ever achieved for one of these machines at auction. In all, with 92% of the lots sold, the sale achieved a total of £3,376,045. After an intense six-way bidding battle, a 1931 981cc Brough Superior SS100 went to a bidder in the room for £264,700 – way above its pre-sale estimate of £170,000-£220,000. Proceeds from that particular sale will benefit three charities – the Search and Rescue Dog Association, the RNLI and the Salvation Army. James Stensel, head of Bonhams Collectors’ Motorcycles UK, said: “We are incredibly honoured to have been appointed to sell such a special machine.
"The result exceeded all expectations and demonstrates the strength of the Brough Superior market and the length the bidders will go to in support of such worthy causes.” A 1974 Ducati 750SS project was sold to a bidder in the room for £106,780 – more than three times its pre-sale estimate. Other machines that did the same included a 1923 746cc four-cylinder Nimbus (£55,200) and a 1930 996cc Coventry-Eagle Flying-8 Model F150 Police (£68,700). All 42 machines entered by distinguished collector Miklos Salamon were sold, including a 1950 998cc Vincent Chinese Red Touring Rapide and a 1940 78 cubic-inch Indian four that each went for £68,700.
This rare and delightful chunk of metal in the form of a 1970 1177cc Clymer Münch TTS Mammoth went under the gavel for a record £154,940.
Three charities benefited from the sale of this gorgeous 1931 981cc Brough Superior SS100, which at £264,700 sold well above its estimate.
Fancy entering a group of motorcycles like this and selling every single one of them! These were just some of the 42 machines put up for sale by distinguished collector Miklos Salamon.
Examples of the MV Agusta 750S have come up for auction at Bonhams Stafford sales before – but this one was sold for another record-busting bid of £96,700.
What a pair of beauties! By courtesy of the Sammy Miller Museum, visitors to the Vintage Motor Cycle Club’s Festival of 1000 Bikes at Mallory Park on July 7-8 will thrill to the sounds of two of the most exotic racing motorcycles ever built – the five-speed 498cc Moto Guzzi V8 and the four-speed 500cc doubleoverhead-camshaft Gilera as raced by Geoff Duke and Bob McIntyre. “When we start them up here at the museum, they are always a massive crowdpuller,” said Sam, “and to see them in action at Mallory will be a great treat for everyone.”
Get ready for a goose-pimple-raising experience at Mallory in July as the Gilera four and Guzzi V8 fill the circuit with their sweet mechanical symphony.

We like to think that OBM offers great value to its readers, with event news, nostalgia, readers’ tales and so much more, but then again we’re probably a bit biased, so we really would like to hear your own thoughts. Whether you’ve been a subscriber for years or have just picked up your first copy through a mate, we want to know what you think about it. What’s right, and what should be left out? What do you want to see more or less of? So we’ve created a simple online survey that can be found at www.oldbikemart.co.uk, and we’d really appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete it. As a thank you for completing the survey, all respondents will be entered into a free prize draw to be in with a chance of winning a Held helmet or gloves. One lucky winner will be able to choose between a Held by Schuberth H-R2 full-face helmet worth £419.99 or a Held by Schuberth H-C3 flip-up helmet worth the same. Three pairs of Held Gore-Tex Air ‘n’ Dry gloves each worth £175.99 are also to be won. Many thanks – and good luck in the prize draw. Alternatively, the lucky winner might prefer this H-C3 flip-top.

Two starting points for this year’s ‘Herefordshire on the Edge’ event For the third year running, the Herefordshire Section of the Vintage Motor Cycle Club will be running its flagship ‘Herefordshire on the Edge’ event on Sunday, June 24, and enquiries for this unique non-competitive navigational exercise are already coming in from classic motorcycle enthusiasts from all corners of the UK. It’s open to motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and three-wheelers that were at least 25 years old on January 1 this year, and entrants will have a choice of two starting points – the traditional southern start at The Traveller’s Rest at Ross-on-Wye (HR9 7QJ) and a new northern start at The Lion Hotel, Leintwardine (SY7 0JZ). During the day, entrants will have to plan and follow a route which, from their chosen start point, takes them to the other end of the county as well as to controls in Hay on Wye and the British Camp,
and as many of 28 other designated waypoints spaced at intervals on and around the borders of Herefordshire as possible. A new feature for this year will be four optional waypoints sited on legal, non-damaging unsurfaced roads, and entrants completing this option will qualify for a ‘Herefordshire on the Ragged Edge’ award!). Last year 68 riders entered on 21 different motorcycle marques, including some rare and beautiful machines. The smallest bike was just 49cc and the oldest, entered by Wigmore’s Steve Summer, was a 1926 BSA. The VMCC section hopes to attract more than 100 entries this time. Charity T-shirts mark 1978 TT comeback by ‘Mike the Bike’ Over the past three years, sales of Wemoto’s Festival of Jurby T-shirts have raised more than £48,000 for the Manx Grand Prix Supporters’ Club. Featuring Mike Hailwood on the Sports Motor Cycles Ducati, this year’s design marks the 40th anniversary of his comeback to mainstream motorcycle racing and his Formula 1 TT win on the Island.
All profits raised by the sale of the T-shirts will go to the club, a charity that helps fund the life-saving helicopter ambulances on practice and race days as well as supporting injured riders and their families and donating money to help with medical equipment. Costing just £10 each, they are available from sales@wemoto.com, and limited numbers will be also be on sale at this year’s festival.

Supermarket visit ends with BSA Starfire prize Stephen Earl from Stamford, Lincolnshire, couldn’t believe his luck when he became the winner of a 1970 BSA Starfire in an exclusive Asda-backed Classic Bike Guide magazine competition. The 48-year-old single-cylinder machine has been tastefully restored, upgraded and modified to suit modern riding conditions, and Stephen said: “When my wife said she wanted to go to Asda to look at clothes, I went to look at the magazines. CBG is one of my regular buys, and although I rarely enter competitions, the Starfire took my eye – and when I found
out I‘d won it, my happiness was surpassed only by when I actually rode it.” Made from 1968 until 1970, it replaced the 1967 Barracuda after only one year. The engine of the CBG example was rebuilt with a new crank and connecting rod, and a piston from a Triumph Speed Twin machined to fit the bored barrel. It also has a new Amal carburettor, electronic ignition and an oil-filter modification to improve reliability. The competition was exclusively for Asda customers, and Stephen collected his prize from the store in North Hykeham, Lincolnshire.
Hailwood, Dunlop and Roberts in Motor Sport Hall of Fame shortlist

Mike Hailwood, Joey Dunlop and Kenny Roberts have been chosen for the motorcycling shortlist for the Motor Sport Hall of Fame 2018. A multiple champion on two wheels and a star on four, Mike won nine world championships, including 250cc and 350cc titles in 1966 and 67, along with 14 TTs. On the world stage he averaged a win every other race – and that in an era as deadly as any. He was even awarded the George Medal after saving an unconscious Clay Regazzoni from his burning car at Kyalami in 1973.
With 26 TT wins in 25 visits, Joey Dunlop became a true hero, and even in 2000, at the age of 48, he won three out of five races during TT week, tragically losing his life a month later in a 125cc charity race in Estonia. Known as ‘King Kenny’, Kenny Roberts was the first American to win a Grand Prix World Championship when he claimed the 500cc crown in 1978, winning it twice more in 1979 and 80. In 1983 he finished second after an epic battle with Freddie Spencer. Roberts was also a committed safety campaigner.

Torrens Trophy awarded to World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Rea MBE was awarded the Royal Automobile Club’s Torrens Trophy on Thursday, March 29 – the day our April issue went to press – at the Pall Mall Clubhouse for being the first rider to win three consecutive World Superbike Championships. For Rea, it was only the latest in a string of high-profile accolades, from finishing runner-up in the Sports Personality of the Year contest just 2957 votes behind winner Sir Mo Farah to being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Jonathan received his trophy from Barrie Baxter, chairman of the Torrens Trophy Nominations Committee. The son of Isle of Man TT winner Johnny Rea, the 30-year-old from Ballymena moved to Kawasaki in 2015 and has been virtually unbeatable ever since. He’s been on the podium 112 times during his World Superbike career, and last season won 16 of 26 WSB races, making history for the most points scored in a single season, with an amazing 556.
After an early career in motocross, he started road racing in 2003 and quickly moved up the ranks from the British Superbike Championship to the world stage in 2008, when he finished as World Supersport runner-up. The shortlist of Torrens Trophy contenders was announced in November at ‘Motorcycle Live’, with other notable nominees including Leon Haslam and Sam Sunderland. Haslam lost out on the 2017 MCE British Superbike Championship title after his front brake failed in the deciding race and he suffered a broken ankle, wrist and thumb. He was carried to winner Shakey Byrne to congratulate him – the act of a true sportsman. Sunderland’s victory in last year’s Dakar made history as he became the first British rider to win the off-road endurance event since its inception in 1979. The Torrens Trophy was first awarded in 1978 in memory of Arthur Bourne, a motorcycling journalist who wrote a column under the pseudonym Torrens, the Latin for ‘stream’. He was also a vice-chairman of the Royal Automobile Club.

Rain stops play as Prescott Bike Festival is postponed until June By the time OBM received the news that the Prescott Bike Festival, which should have taken place over the weekend of April 14-15, had been postponed because of saturated ground conditions, our April issue had long gone to press. In support of Blood Bikes, the festival celebrates engineering
excellence in rare, classic, modern, customised and hand-built motorcycles, together with more than 100 trade and club stands, lots of eyebrow-raising machinery, an ‘On the Edge’ stunt show, children’s zone, passenger ride experiences, a large beer tent and much more. Keeping your Velocette in top-notch condition With the laudable aim of obviating the ‘English restoration syndrome’ of shiny bikes hiding a multitude of sins, Jan Hoogesteger of Croscombe, Wells, Somerset, has set up Velocette Toolroom Services to ensure that those single-cylinder Hall Green classics continue running smoothly and reliably for as long as possible. Jan’s first rebuild, with the sage advice of Velocette-owning friends, was that of a 1949 rigid MAC with Dowty Air forks in 1968, and the machine showed amazing reliability despite hauling a box sidecar on 200-mile trips.
This enthused Jan for Velos, and in due course he obtained more modern types – a Venom, MSS, Viper and, in 1974, a Thruxton. As is sadly so often the case, however, many of the components were heavily worn, or more probably had suffered at the hands of ‘Bodger Bill’. After going through the dark days of no factory and limited Velocette Owners’ Club spares, he determined to make those parts he couldn’t buy or repair those that were salvageable. Although he worked overseas for many years, he slowly accumulated the basis of a properly equipped workshop
which now comprises a Harrison toolroom lathe, two Bridgeport millers and a Jones & Shipman precision grinder, along with Tig and gas welding equipment. Measuring equipment, specialpurpose presses and extractors were also acquired. Specialist procedures have been established for dealing specifically with Velocette parts, from skimming front brake drums to reprofiling the Stellite pads on cam followers using precision jigs. A recent development has been the production of a batch of double damper units for Clubman and early Thruxton
front forks, made from stronger materials than original. Sympathetic modifications and solutions to problems have resulted in breather systems, 350 and 500cc squish-head conversions and the repair of worn rocker-box bearings. Full engine rebuilds and conversions can also be carried out, along with tuning parts and solving front fork and wheel problems. A full list of the very reasonable prices charged for all these procedures and more is available from Jan at 3 Steps, Rock Street, Croscombe, Wells, Somerset BA5 3QT, or by calling 01749 344513 after 6pm.
No matter what work needs doing to keep your Velocette single slogging on reliably for many years to come, Jan Hoogesteger has the answer.
Bike raffle and ride-in motorcycle show at Romney Marsh Classic Autojumble A Dover Transport Museum raffle for two motorcycles – a 1947 250cc BSA C11 and a 1953 197cc Francis-Barnett Falcon – to raise funds for its collection will be a top attraction at the Romney Marsh Classic Bikejumble on Sunday, May 20. There will also be a ride-in show, with spot cash prizes for the best pre-1990 classic and best post-classic machines, at ELK Promotions’ first event of the year where visitors will find a great choice of new and used spares, bikes, clothing and accessories. Seating will be available in the large marquee, where stalls will include those from Falconwood Transport & Military Bookshop, AJ’s Old Tax Discs and Triumph Tiger Cub specialists Greystone Enterprises. On the A2070 six miles from J10 of the M20, the venue is Marsh Road, Hamstreet, near Ashford, Kent TN26 2J. The show will open at 10am. A helmet park for those arriving on two wheels is being organised by the Royal British Legion, whose gazebo will be close to the bike park, and there will be a free BikeMart display-to-sell area for private vendors. Cheap garage clear-out stalls are available for £10, but must be pre-booked.
There will be good catering facilities on site, and well-behaved dogs on leads will be welcome. More rare parts from Kingpin As so often happens, while struggling to find parts for his own restoration projects, Andy Marks decided that the only answer was to arrange their manufacture himself – and as it made so much sense to produce the items in small batches, he set up Kingpin Components to make them available to others. In addition to his own engineering skills, his experience with 2D and 3D CAD made it easy to call upon the services of specialists in the area of 3D printing, casting, laser-cutting and CNC machining. The range of parts available, with a strong focus on unique items unavailable elsewhere, is increasing all the time and already includes complete Dunlop rubber saddles, magneto Vernier drives and – the latest addition – double-barrel silencers for vintage Nortons. Among the smaller items available are the new bike-size cast aluminium GB plates illustrated. As well as advertising all available parts, Kingpin Components’ www.kingpincomponents.co.uk website also includes a technical section with numerous ‘how to’ articles and easily downloaded spreadsheets.
