etter after letter has come in to OBM in recent weeks, about the perceived state of the old bike movement, with many readers citing factors such as high auction prices, hoarding bikes as ‘nest eggs’ with profit rather than riding in mind, potential new riders being put off by stringent learner/riding test rules, and even the rather obvious ones of changing times and the passing away of increasing numbers of those who, like myself, enjoyed every second of motorcycling in the 1960s, starting off with a humble Norman Nippy moped.

The debate has raised all of these issues and more, but to the diminishing number of us who still enjoy reminiscing about the good

old days, we have to face the realities of our own mortality and the fact that younger riders might have different ideas about life on two wheels.

If you were a motorcyclist from the mid-to-late 1950s onwards, nowrevered classic machines such as BSA Gold Stars, Triumph Bonnevilles and Norton Dominators were not classic bikes at all, but rather the newest and fastest you could get your hands on.

At that time, a 50-year-old machine would be something like a belt-drive Triumph of the kind that delivered dispatches during the First World War, and today would be taking part in events like the Banbury Run – but hand on heart, how many of us would even have considered riding one in 1960?

There is no shortage of motorcyclists on the roads of Lincolnshire, where I happen to live, but most of them prefer to ride modern machines as we did. Just as today’s older riders look back with such joy at the bikes they rode over 50 years ago, in time today’s riders will feel the same about the bikes they are now riding.

Another issue raised repeatedly is downsizing to smaller machines as ageing muscles can no longer cope with lifting behemoths on and off their stands – but if the purpose is to continue enjoying two wheels for as long as possible, classic lightweight machines (Fizzies excepted) rarely cost the earth, and in any case the market is now

crowded with brand-new cheap and affordable small bikes that are more reliable than they ever were in the ‘good old days’.

It could be just like starting motorcycling all over again!

and Mike Sarne’s ton-up anthem Just for Kicks will bring the soundtracks of café racing in the 1960s.The feisty London Rockin’ Rollers have been invited again, raising funds for the cafe’s chosen charity The Samaritans.

At 10.30am on Sunday, September 9, the annual Ride with the Rockers to Brighton will be flagged away by the Mayor of Brent, and at the seaside resort, as well as an array of clubs, trade stands, displays and live bands, the annual seafront service and blessing will be given

by Father Sergiy and Father Scott of the 59 Club.

As well as being a church charity, the 59 Club is also a motorcycle club, and it all started with a visit to the Ace by Father Bill Shergold in 1962.

William Dunlop (1985-2018) – a true racing hero The road racing world is still reeling from the death of 32-year-old Irish hero William Dunlop following a crash on Saturday, July 7, during practice for the Skerries 100 road race organised by the Loughshinny Motorcycle Supporters’ Club in County Dublin.

The accident occurred at the Sam’s Tunnel section on the third lap of the 2.9-mile circuit, and the race was immediately red-flagged.

It was the third racing tragedy for the Dunlop family, after William’s uncle Joey lost his life during a race in Estonia in 2000, and Joey’s brother Robert, William’s father, succumbed to injuries received in an accident at the North West 200 in 2008.

As soon as the news of William’s death broke out, members of the public began visiting the Dunlop Memorial Garden in Ballymoney to remember another one of their own and lay floral tributes.

Following discussions with the Dunlop family, sponsors and fellow riders, it was agreed that the Skerries would go ahead in tribute to William as a nonchampionship event on Sunday, July 8, with the entire prize fund going to his family.

Three days later, the narrow rural road leading to Garryduff Presbyterian Church was lined by hundreds of mourners, many wearing their motorcycling gear, when William’s funeral took place on Wednesday, July 11.

After a service conducted by the Rev John Kirkpatrick, William was laid to rest beside his father.

Remembered by many for his thoughtful, humble and gracious nature, William passed up on this year’s Isle of Man TT in order to be with his pregnant partner Janine and their daughter Emma.

The elder of Robert’s sons, William, who started racing in 2000, accumulated 108 Irish National Road Race wins, including four at the North West 200, seven at the Ulster Grand Prix at Dundrod and 15 at the Skerries.

His best Isle of Man TT result was second in the 2016 TT Zero race of 2016, but he also finished third on four occasions.

The Irish and Isle of Man racing scene will never be the same again following the passing of William Dunlop after a racing accident at the Skerries 100 on July 7.

It's a winning formula at Crich Classic Motorcycle Day Both visitor and entry numbers were up for the second annual Classic Motorcycle Day to be organised in conjunction with the Vincent HRD Owners’ Club at Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire on a glorious first day of July.

The magical blend of classic motorcycles and vintage trams proved a winning formula, and once again the main sponsor was Derwent Waste Management, with managing director John Kunica and his children helping to present the awards.

The event drew more than 2000 visitors and 500 motorcycles, and the wide spectrum of bikes on display naturally included a good selection of Vincents, along with an excellent turnout of BSA, Triumph and Norton machines and many others, including scooters.

One of the main talking points was the impressive display of more than 45 BSA Gold Stars outside the Red Lion pub on the main street.

The Robin Hood Riders put on a great display of racing motorcycles, with plenty of noise when they ran their engines at 1pm.

The spirit of the the Classic Motorcycle Day at Crich Tramway Village is epitomised by this great line-up of BSA Gold Stars outside the Red Lion pub on the attraction’s High Street.

The quality of the motorcycles on show made judging particularly difficult, but in the end John Cottrill’s 1938 Triumph Speed Twin won the award for the best British bike while Adrian Ayre’s Suzuki GT750 was declared the best International machine.

The new Old Bike Mart Trophy for the best original bike was presented to John Burbidge with his Brough Superior, and Maggie Baker won a special award for her 1943 Harley-Davidson WLC. The visiting public voted a Vincent Grey Flash replica displayed by Mike Hawthorne from Doncaster best in show.

One of the event organisers, Jon Lambley of the Vincent HRD Owners’ Club, said: “It was another fantastic day, with visitors mingling with the motorcycles and trams.

Next year’s Classic Motorcycle Day at Crich Tramway Village will take place on Sunday, July 9.”

Aiming higher still for next year’s InSpire Ride to IBCC Tim (‘Biggles’) Kenney, one of the organisers behind this year’s very first InSpire Ride at the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln – the UK’s newest war memorial created to commemorate the massive losses from Bomber Command (all 58,000 of them) – is aiming to at least double the numbers of this year’s inaugural event when the 2019 ride takes place on Sunday, May 12.

Set on top of a hill overlooking Lincoln, the IBCC houses a modern interactive

exhibition space, a theatrical modern Corten steel spire that’s the same height as a Lancaster bomber’s wingspan, and 270 Corten steel plates into which is engraved every name lost.

This year’s organised ‘ride-to’ event attracted more than 500 people on more than 320 bikes, and the attractions included ‘Meet the Veterans’, a Lancaster bomber flypast, lots of food and merchandise, period singers and a closing commemoration ceremony, and raised

some much-needed funds for charity.

Fourth Leighton Hall Motorcycle Hill Climb will be longest and fastest yet There will be plenty of high-octane action when the fourth Motorcycle Hill Climb takes place on a newly extended course at historic Leighton Hall, just half a mile from Yealand Conyers in Lancashire, on Sunday, September 23.

Organiser Ian Sherrard, of Sherrard Classic Vehicle Events, has extended the climb from 220 metres to 268,with a high-speed 60-degree bend just 50 metres from the start, and riders will reach speeds of 100mph as they climb through the picturesque parkland.

With limits on neither speed nor noise, the hill climb is open to all motorcycles and three-wheelers of any engine capacity.

Away from the climb and its live commentary, visitors will be able to browse around the autojumble and trade stands and admire displays of Dave Norcott’s grass and speedway bikes, Morecambe Bay Estuary’s Advanced Motorcyclists, the North West Blood Bikes and Lancashire Constabulary’s Road Policing Unit.

Suzie Reynolds of Leighton Hall says: “We love to get Leighton reverberating to the sound of these powerful bikes each September. It’s the only hill climb in the area and will be bigger and better this year.”

The grounds will open at 9am, with practice warm-ups from 9.30, and the racing will begin at 1pm.

Series-C Black Shadow at Netley Marsh sale A 1949 Series-C HRD Vincent Black Shadow, whose owner bought it as a box of bits in 2008 and spent the following year restoring it, is being auctioned by Charterhouse on Friday, August 31.

Since being restored it has covered just 200 miles, and has stood in the hallway of its owner’s Cambridge home for almost a decade.

The owner has offered it for auction as he is now well into his eighties and doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to ride it again.

The bike is estimated to sell for £60,000£70,000 when it comes up at the specialist auction of classic and vintage motorcycles at the Netley Marsh Classic Bike Show on Friday, August 31.

The front wheel paws the air as a determined Leighton Hall competitor gets away.

Intimidated by modern traffic Reader Arthur Pentney, after looking at last month’s front page photo, brings an interesting take on the declining numbers taking part in motorcycle events.

“Just look at the picture on the front of the July issue, and another on page 37 taken in Banbury itself,” he says, “to see the reasons for the declining numbers – pressure, density and intimidation by modern traffic.

Only a few years ago, the Banbury Run regularly had 600 entrants, with many more unable to get in due to over-subscribing, but this year the entry was down to 468 and Arthur, from Norfolk, asks why.

“Mr K A Wareham mentioned the detrimental effect of more modern bikes being allowed to take part in some classic runs,” writes Arthur, “and I have much sympathy for his comments, but do feel that if we are riding genuine old machines we need a pretty thick skin – and decent clobber – when a string of Audis, BMWs (cars, that is) and 4x4s are sitting on our tail.”

Grampian Convention back on the calendar The 35th running of the Grampian Motorcycle Convention will take place on Sunday, September 9. It should have been the 36th, but sadly the 2017 event had to be cancelled after a fatal accident involving a car during a private track hire/test session at the venue.

With the investigations continuing, the museum’s arena can be used only for events with reduced speed elements, so this year’s Convention will be more of a static bike show than in previous years.

Visiting motorcyclists, or ‘delegates’, will be able to ride their machines right into the event where they will form part of the attractions, being arranged in paddocks where the bikes will be eligible for judging.

There will be an expanded trade show, with the latest machines being demonstrated on the road circuit, including electric bikes.

Vintage and classic machines can be entered by individuals or clubs for judging in a range of classes, including scooters and classic racers, and all will be paraded for visitors to see, hear and smell (including the Castrol R in competition machines).

The auction of a BMW R1150 RS Tourer to raise money for a new orphanage in Imphal, India, will be preceded by the sale of a small number of vintage and classic machines including a rare Silk 700 from the 1980s, inspired by the Scott water-cooled two-stroke twins of the 1920s, with the hammer

wielded by well-known local auctioneer Colin Slessor of TV fame.

The 2018 Convention will run from 11am until 4pm, with entry costing £8 adults, £5 concessions and students and £2 children. Entry to the event at at the Grampian Transport Museum, Alford, Aberdeenshire AB33 8AE will include a free souvenir programme and free vintage bus service from the main car park to the event for those arriving by car.

Brighton Speed Trials Motorcycle entries for the quarter-mile sprint Brighton Speed Trials along Madeira Drive on Saturday, September 1 closed on Monday, July 30, just before this issue of OBM was published, but for future reference it’s the Sprint Section of the Vintage Motor Cycle Club that organises the bike entries and not, as was wrongly suggested last month, the organising Brighton and Hove Motor Club, which is responsible only for the car entries.

Bike Life Classics success at Sammy Miller Museum

With great weather, a great crowd and some great bikes, the Bike Life Classics Day at the Sammy Miller Museum on Sunday, June 24, surpassed all expectations, with almost 1400 bikes in attendance – the most ever.

Renowned bike builders Don and Derek Rickman were presented with Bike Life Classics Lifetime Achievement Awards, and indeed a Rickman Kawasaki 900 took the best in show award, with other trophies being presented to the owners of a Vincent Grey Flash, Kawasaki Z1, Norton CS1 and Triumph Tiger 90.

The Bob Andrews Trophy went to legendary road racer and development engineer Peter Williams.

Don’t even start to think how big those two big pots are! ‘Flying Millyard’ builder Allen Millyard poses with Sammy on a glorious summer’s day.

Racing, the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club, Oxford Products, British Motorcycle Charitable Trust, Burnout Bikes, VP Motorcycles and Hollis Motorcycles, and H&H Auctioneers also helped to made the day a great success.

It was a grand family day out, too, with Jo’s Face Painting creating wonderful designs for the children, and the adults had the chance to sample a lovely glass of cold Pimms.

The Bashley Manor Tearooms did an amazing job providing everyone with food and drinks.

Sammy fired up three of his bikes, the Moto Guzzi V8, BMW Rennsport and Tait Triple, and BRT also started a selection of its race bikes.

British engineer Allen Millyard took along his Viper V10, a one-off 500bhp motorcycle powered by an eight-litre Dodge Viper V-10 engine capable of over 200mph. Reaching 250mph on it is Allen’s goal.

The crowd was able to chat with Geoff Hudspith, inventor and exhibitor of the Hudspith Steam Bicycle, and Alan Pickering with the hot air engine he invented and built.

Organisers Anthony Andrews and his wife Heidi, do an amazing job in organising the BLC Day, and it gets better every year, and the Sammy Miller Museum Trust is so appreciative of their efforts.

Bike Life Classics is a non-profit group for the preservation of classic bikes.

Think of the stories the characters in this picture could tell. Framed by two immaculate Rickman machines, Peter Williams was the worthy winner of the Bob Andrews Trophy at the Bike Life Classics Day on Sunday, June 24.

Interviewing him is the ageless racing and trials legend Sammy Miller, while to the left and right in the black shirts are the Rickman brothers Don and Derek, who were presented with BLC Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Looking for just the right winter project? The 25th Carole Nash Eurojumble could be just the right place to start.

Aberdare Park road race circuit resurfaced at last Competitors in this year’s Aberdare Park Road Races on July 21-22 would have been the first to benefit from a recent resurfacing of the historic track, which stands just half a mile from the centre of the South Wales town, thanks to funding secured by the organising Aberaman Motorcycle Club.

The circuit first hosted motorcycle racing in 1950 and has since welcomed many of the greatest names in the sport.

The late John Surtees took his first-ever motorcycle win there in 1952, when he was just 18.

In 1955 the first motorcycle race meeting to be televised live took place at Aberdare Park and among other legends to race there have been Mike Hailwood, Bob McIntyre and Phil Read. In 1988 Carl Fogarty set a new outright lap record for the 1.45km circuit.

This year, 23-time TT winner John McGuinness was on hand on the Saturday to meet the public and talk about his remarkable racing career.

Race director Derek Smith said: “The resurfacing was important if we were to continue hosting an event that continues to attract an entry that is growing in both numbers and quality, and we are very grateful to Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, its leader Coun Andrew Morgan and the Welsh Government for their support.”

Panigale roller-coaster for theme-park Ducati World MotoGP and SBK flag-bearers Andrea Dovizioso and Marco Melandri were among the guests who attended the first stone-laying ceremony of Ducati World, which will occupy some 35,000 square metres inside Mirabilandia, Italy’s biggest amusement park.

Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali and Mirabilandia’s general manager Riccardo Marcante were also present.

The Ducati World attractions will include a racing-inspired inter-active roller coaster simulating a ride on a Panigale V4, transforming passengers into real riders by letting them control vehicle acceleration and braking and making every run an authentic head-to-head between bikes roaring along parallel rails.

There will also be a facility dedicated to The Ducati Experience, with latest-generation ride simulators, unprecedented family attractions, a Ducati shop offering apparel and accessories and three Ducati and Ducati Scrambler-themed refreshment areas.

Good news for Tiger owners Resurfacing work seen under way at Aberdare Park has now been completed.

A motorcycle ridden by silver screen icon Steve McQueen in The Great Escape will star at the Chubb Insurance Concours d’Elegance at Salon Prive at the end of August.

Now on display at the Triumph Factory Visitor Experience at Hinckley, the 1962 650cc TR6R had not been shown publicly since the film classic was made in 1963, and it will be vying for honours with other notable motorcycles at Blenheim Palace, where three classes will be judged.

An amateur racer on two and four wheels, McQueen is said to have asked the film’s director, John Sturges, to let him perform the famous stunt that saw his character Virgil Hilts attempt to flee his pursuers by jumping across barricades and barbed

wire from Germany into neutral Switzerland, but the film’s insurers wouldn’t allow it and the task fell to McQueen’s friend and sometimes team-mate Bud Ekins.

As Second World War-era machines would not have been up to the task, several TR6Rs were aged to look the part, and the stunt became legendary.

At Blenheim Palace, the Triumph will be entered in Class B, for exceptional motorbikes 1940-1979, and judged on Thursday, August 30 before the machine goes on general display the next day.

The other two classes in the Chubb Insurance Concours will be Class A (exceptional motorbikes 1900-1939) and Class C (exceptional competition motorcycles).

Greetham Gathering sets new attendance record Yet another attendance record was set when the second of this year’s Greetham Gatherings took place at the community centre in the Rutland village on Thursday, June 21.

The 150 motorcycles and 400 cars that attended included an estimated 50 classic bikes and 200 classic cars, and more than 800 people turned out on a warm and sunny evening.

The Gatherings take place from 5pm on the third Thursday of each month between May and September, at Greetham Community Centre, Great Lane, Greetham LE15 7NG, and are open to all, with or without a classic vehicle.

There’s a £1 charge for each vehicle entering, and the events include a raffle, a selection of hot food, tea, coffee, home-made cakes and a licenced bar, with all profits going to the local air ambulance.

New Japanese classic trophy for Hull’s RSPCA bike show The 15th annual motorcycle show in aid of the RSPCA’s Hull & East Riding Animal Rescue Centre will take place at Clough Road, Hull HU6 7PE, on Sunday, September 9.

As well as hundreds of motorcycles lined up for judging in five classes, the event will feature RSPCA stalls, trade stands, club stands, race bikes, a famed barbecue and the centre’s own refreshment stall groaning under the weight of delicious homemade cakes and buns.

The classes will be for British, European, Japanese and American bikes, as well as custom bikes and trikes, and the motorcycles up for judging will be allowed in from 11am until noon, with the public being admitted from noon onwards.

Special trophies will be awarded for the best British classic machine, and a new one for the best Japanese classic machine has been provided by local dealer 5-Ways of Walton Street, which has also kindly offered sponsorship for the show.

Rosettes will be presented for the first, second and third in all five classes, and the Frank Palmer Memorial Trophy will be awarded for the best in show.

1913 TT Rudge is latest from Sam’s Restoration Workshop

You don’t see many 350cc Ducati Sebrings these days, but this wellrestored example was seen at Greetham.

The latest machine to be brought back to life by the Restoration Workshop at the Sammy Miller Museum at Bashley, New Milton, Hampshire B25 5SZ, is a 1913 TT Rudge donated to the Museum Trust by staunch supporter Bill McComb of County Antrim.

After keeping the machine in a dismantled and poor state for many years, Bill decided that it needed restoring and bringing back to its full glory, to be displayed in the museum’s Racing Gallery.

Boasting many special features, the TT Rudge spent its early life in Northern Ireland, as evidenced by its Irish registration number.

Sad farewell to former scrambler and motorcycle dealer Ken Covell Many who remember the heyday of scrambling will be sorry to learn of the passing, after a long illness, of Ken Covell, who started competing in the mid-1950s and gained his international licence in the early 1960s.

We are grateful to his son, Adam, for the following obituary.

“Dad quickly developed a real passion for the sport and became quite a formidable competitor,” says Adam, “and after he met Andy Lee, who was in the RAF, they raced together, with Andy helping to acquire rationed petrol courtesy of the RAF to fuel their racing.”

The writing on the back of this picture goes: “Four-stroke supporter Ken Covell displays his 1964 Matchless Metisse. Built for £450, this was one of the first production Metisse frames. The other bike in the background (which can just be seen on the right – Ed) is the one used by Andy Lee. Probably these two frames were the first two off the Rickman production line.”

In 1959 Ken and Andy started Lee & Covell Motorcycles in Ely, and although after a few years they went their separate ways, with Ken running a business in Ely and Andy in Cambridge, they remained lifelong friends.

In the 1960s Ken rode on the continent, where scrambling has a bigger following and the rewards to match, but at one of the televised BBC Grandstand scrambles in 1963 he had a coming-together with one of the TV cameras. After the Beeb suggested that Ken should pay for the damage, he advised them

in his own style that they should not have put the camera in such a stupid place!

He retired from racing in the 1970s, but remained involved by sponsoring and helping many riders.

“In 1974 dad bought 10 B50 motors from the BSA factory and gave them to Eric Cheney to build 10 Cheney Abergs,” says Adam. “In 1975 Eric rang dad and told him to get to the factory as quickly as possible as the company was going into liquidation.

Dad had to collect the 10 partlyassembled bikes that day, and enough parts to finish the builds.”

During the late 1970s and 80s, Ken became a CCM retailer, selling 47 of the bikes in 1978 alone and developing a loyal customer base both in the UK and on the continent.

He also started the Covell & Joy FourStroke Motocross Championship with long-time friend and customer Derek Joy. A cutting from an old Ely newspaper shows Ken Covell This was a spin-off and Andy Lee trying out a couple of home-built special from the successful Haynes Four-Stroke scramblers at Witchford Airfield during the early days Series, but he of both riders’ careers.

It’s vintage to voltage as Julie and Carla plan fundraising run to Paris Carla McKenzie and Julia Diplock, two businesswomen in their fifties who just love riding bikes, are planning a London to Paris ride in September on two motorcycles that simply couldn’t be more different – a 500cc 1926 Model Q complete with hand-change and lever throttle and a state-of-the-art Zero electric machine that will restrict the daily range to about 70 miles.

The aim is to stick as closely as possible to old roads and green lanes while raising money for three really worthwhile charities:■ The Lieut Dougie Dalzell MC Memorial Trust offering support and assistance to soldiers who are currently serving, or have served, in the Armed Forces (www. dougiedalzellmemorialtrust.co.uk).

Julie and Carla swap their bikes that have an age difference of over 90 years!

Carla and Julie have been passionate motorcyclists for most of their lives, and between them have owned and ridden a huge variety of machines.

Carla is the managing director of MYA Consulting based in Stroud, and is no stranger to motorcycle adventures, having ridden across the USA with wounded veterans as pillion passengers several times.

In 2015, having only just learned to trail ride, she undertook an epic charity ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a British trail bike using as many green lanes as possible, and this latest project combines her enthusiasm for both trail riding and electric motorcycles.

Julie, who lives on Romney Marsh, founded Elk Promotions which runs classic motorcycle and autojumble events across Kent and Sussex. She worked as a courier during the dispatch-riding heyday of the 1980s before progressing to track and sprint riding, and regularly uses her collection of veteran, vintage and classic bikes on the road.

In 1990, Ken received a call to say that a bike he’d sold in 1966 had been found and that the owner wanted to return it to him – so after many months of restoration Ken started riding again on his trusty old steed, and got so much pleasure over the next 17 years going away for weekends with Dougie Desborough and Mike Curtis to ride bikes, talk bikes and be around people who loved bikes as well.

At Ken Covell’s funeral, which took place on Thursday, July 19, Mike Curtis took along one of Ken’s old bikes.

This early 1990s cutting from the same local paper records how Ken, then 58, was reunited with a 500cc Matchless Metisse that he’d sold at the end of 1965 for £300, never expecting to see it again.

Although the frame to the bike bit is missing, these bits and pieces have most of the makings of a Dot commercial trike, and the gavel fell at £1087.

This 1985 four-cylinder, two-stroke Yamaha RD500C1 missile went for £16,675.

at £1087, to a full fat 1982 HarleyDavidson FLT Road King, unused for many years since being imported from South Africa, at £3565 and a 1954 BSA M33 that went to Eire at £3335.

Eighty per cent of the 55 machines offered were sold, including a 1946 Norton project at £1,725, a 1977 Kawasaki Z750 at £2875, a well-restored Harley Davidson Electra Glide at £9200, a 2007 Royal Enfield Bullet combination at £4425 and a 1977 Norton Commando Mk III at £6675.

Other top bids were £18,975 for a 1959 500cc BSA Gold Star with matching numbers – unsold in the snow – and £16,675 for a 1985 Yamaha RD500C1.

expected on this latest venture are finding places to charge the Zero in rural locations, and overcoming the mechanical and riding challenges of piloting the old Triumph along muddy green lanes with that hand gear-change and lever throttle.

It’s planned to start the trip, which will highlight the evolution of motorcycles over the past century, from Westminster on Tuesday, September 18, finishing in Paris on Friday the 21st, but these dates are to be confirmed.

One really worthwhile project with a great patina was this lovely plungerframed BSA single – and it certainly looks as if everything is there.

Festival of 1000 Bikes

After a five-year hiatus, Leicestershire’s Mallory Park is once again playing host to the Festival of 1000 Bikes, and Dave Manning rode through the early July heat to see the result.

ith 2018’s incredible summer season bringing about much reminiscing of 1976, it seems rather apt that the layout of the Mallory Park circuit for the Festival of 1000 Bikes replicates that as used 40 years ago, and without the various chicanes that have been added in 1986, 2003 and 2005.

I went on the Saturday of the Festival weekend, with the plan that the ride home would be rather quieter thanks to the game of global kickball that was being televised – although I hadn’t actually realised that Saturday would see only road bikes on track, with the Sunday being reserved for the pukka noisy race tackle.

That said, there was no shortage of very interesting classic machinery taking to Mallory’s classic race course. Having undergone a period of rest, with the last Festival taking place five years ago, it was unlikely that I’d be experiencing the crowds

(and consequent queues) that the event had at its heyday. And while, for some, this year’s event may have seemed quiet, there is little doubt that it will have renewed enthusiasm for punters and organisers alike.

Having ridden in, parked, taken my lid off and looked around, I knew that I’d be back next year – a feeling that was enforced when I saw the amount of track time that could be available to someone with an appropriately-aged motorcycle and a willingness to wear leathers on such a hot day!

Pre-65 trials

Aside from the near-continuous ontrack action, there was also an area for pre-65 trials bikes, tucked into the woods south of Gerrards, the big right-hander just after the start-finish straight, and some classic grasstrack also taking place, although my tragic timing was such that I didn’t get to see either in action, much to my chagrin.

However, for the road racing circuit, spectator viewing is second to none at Mallory, with the ability to stand very close to trackside at many points, and with the full paddock access that the Festival allows, it was possible to get as close to any of the bikes as you wished – it’s easy to understand why Mallory is known as ‘the friendly circuit’.

And there was plenty to look at in the paddock, with some very special machinery tucked into every nook and cranny, and a fair amount of lust-worthy bikes around the camping and trade areas as well, as you’ll see from the photos here. Bikes that caught my eye were George Pooley’s three specials – the V6 ‘triple’, the DOHC triple and the four cylinder Triumph; the beautiful little ‘Gilette’ triple made from three Mobylette barrels, one-off crankcases and a Gilera frame; the TZ750 Yamaha; the ’57 Moto Guzzi V8 from the Sammy Miller museum;

a side-valve JAP boardtrack racer, and countless other stunning machines.

Race-prepped

Although Saturday was, essentially, for road bikes only, there were a number of race-prepped machines sneaking in under the noise limit, but those that had true race exhausts had to wait until Sunday.

Not that it meant that all the interesting tackle was being saved until Sunday, as it certainly wasn’t – my eye was caught by a rapidly-ridden rotary Norton. The noisy Sunday sessions also saw the National Sprint Association running some demonstrations along the start-finish straight, including a few examples of modern drag racing machinery as well as some interesting classic sprinters and record holders.

extra entertainment was laid on for those who were staying late or camping over, with rock ’n’ roll bands playing on Friday and Saturday evenings (The Del Sharrons and Josie & The Outlaw respectively), while ex-racer and TV presenter Steve Parrish was chatting with various high profile riders in the VMCC marquee, overlooking the Stebbe Straight, on Saturday evening.

With the return of the Festival being orchestrated by the Vintage Motor Cycle Club, there is little doubt that it can (and will) become their flagship event once more.

And I have a sneaking suspicion that if you want to grab the opportunity for track time at next year’s festival, then you’ll need to get your application in early. Keep an eye out for details of next year’s event in the pages of OBM. More pics can be seen at oldbikemart.co.uk

✪ Muc-Off Star Letter

The long and convoluted story of a Francis-Barnett police bike After reading about the auction of the Heartbeat police Francis-Barnett in the last issue, please find attached pictures of a real Francis-Barnett patrol motorcycle.

It’s a 1964 Cruiser 89 250cc twin that was first registered as a black and white Police Twin at Northallerton, North Yorkshire, on April 8, 1964, but it’s been around the houses a bit since then.

Its second owner was a Yorkshire farmer, name unknown, who was using it as a stopgap in a hedge, and its third, in March 1976, a Mr J Yarrow of Richmond, North Yorks.

After this, it turned up in Poultonle-Fylde with its fourth owner, name unknown, but was taxed at the local post office between May 2003 and July 2005.

It then made its way to owner number five, Mr M Matthews in Somerset, in November 2006 before being moved on to a G C Neale in Bristol in May 2008.

I became the seventh owner in February 2010 when I bought it from Mr Neale, who was selling off his collection of five FrancisBarnetts via good old OBM. The bike actually belongs to my eldest son Stuart, who’s a fan of both Heartbeat and Francis-Barnett motorcycles, so this find was just the ticket for him.

The bike was one of a batch of 12 bought

by North Yorkshire Police in 1964 with their registration numbers ending from 831 to 842, and a total of three, including this one, are still on the DVLA system.

The bike came devoid of police fittings except for the fuel tank, which was modified to allow the fitting of the radio control set, the downside being the reduction in tank capacity from three to two-and-a-half gallons.

It would have been fitted with a Cossar Radio set. These are now non-existent, but

I was able to source and fit a later Pye Westminster set and fake radio box along with the handlebar speaker – and people mistake the speaker for a police siren.

As far as I can find out, the only other police force to use the Francis-Barnett Cruiser 89 for local patrols was Norfolk Police, who bought a large batch of 20 or more around 1964, and they came with full fairings and ridged panniers.

I’d like to thank Bill Hollis in Wales for supplying the hard-to-find police radio equipment etc, and it took me two months to rebuild the bike. It is now used for shows and the odd bike run, and the highlight so far has been gaining a third place best club stand rosette (Francis-Barnett Club) at the April 2016 Stafford Show.

A biking marriage made in heaven!

A few issues ago you asked for images of couples who were still together on bikes after many years, and these photos of my long-suffering wife Jackie and me were taken in 1966 at Little Dial Farm near Wymondham in Norfolk, where my best mate lived.

The bike was a 1954 Triumph Thunderbird with coil ignition. I paid the princely sum of £4 for it, parted it from a double-adult sidecar and Jackie and I turned it into the café racer you see here.

We did most of the work on it in the evenings, in the workshops of the agricultural engineers where I served my apprenticeship. I remember the boss muttering about the electricity we were using – those were the days!

I rode it for a while before selling it (to a chap in Holt, I think) for about £50 and buying a BSA A7SS. Jackie and I are still together after all this time and still riding about on old bikes. The eldest

son quite likes them and has one, and will also ride mine as well, so that’s a good thing.

I hope the photos are of interest, and it would be nice to see them in OBM. PS: I’m still repairing tractors and combine harvesters at 70.

My take on those falling numbers, by ‘Spirit of Sixties’ charity run organiser As organiser of the Spirit of the Sixties Charity Run on behalf of the Westland Classic Motor Cycle Club for the past seven years, I thank Hugh Dickson for his compliment about the event in his Star Letter in the June issue, and offer the following observations.

From its peak of 442 entrants in 1999, there was a gradual reduction to 192 in 2012 on the Spirit Run, and since 2013 it has varied between 160 and 140 (there were 152 this year). More importantly, though, the number of marshals has gone down from 105 in 2012 to 60 in 2018.

Marshals are an essential part of the team in pointing the way and assisting with parking at the chosen venues, alleviating the need for map reading or route following.

In recent years there has also been a trend of participants leaving it a lot later to enter.

At the beginning of April we had the names for only 80 entrants and 20 marshals, and were seriously considering cancelling.

The numbers were still low when the programmes went to print, but we carried on, and

luckily others came forward.

On this year’s run 80% of the 152 entrants’ machines were 30 years old or older, with 69% being 40 years old, and I sense that most of the owners were the same or of much older vintage.

There were younger entrants on the run, which is something we are trying to encourage. The social aspect is one we like to foster as well, because we oldies can learn from the youngsters and vice-versa.

The cost of obtaining a ‘classic bike’, partly due to the increase in the number of auction houses and dealers pushing up prices, is increasing, but perhaps we are all guilty of wanting ‘nest eggs’.

Many riders aspire to collecting numerous bikes with doublefigured ownership not unusual, but this is putting classic bike ownership and riding beyond the finances of younger riders with a mortgage, spouse, children, limited time and so on.

If two-wheeled transport is required as a secondary family vehicle nowadays, it’s usually a cheap ‘twist-and-go’ minimummaintenance scooter type. The

Government’s position on motorcycling, and the difficulty and expense of obtaining a motorcycle licence, are further barriers to today’s young riders.

The typical classic owner/rider is ageing, and conflicting priorities with family, health and time affect us all, yet more motorcycling events are advertised year-on-year, with 10 advertised in OBM alone for that May weekend.

Notably, riders who started riding in the 1980s and 90s prefer the later non-Brit classics, which isn’t necessarily a negative thing.

One idea, perhaps, would be to loan ‘excess classics’ to club trusts or hire them out on a daily basis to younger riders, similar to the car hire clubs operating with classic cars (insurance and licence types permitting).

I don’t have the answers to stop the diminishing number of entrants, other than to say that the Westland Classic Motor Cycle Club will keep the Spirit and our other charity events running as long as it is practical to do so.

Honda’s 500 TT – just the ticket for classic-loving ageing bikers!

Having trouble starting your Goldie or Thruxton? Is that Super Rocket getting a little hard to push around?

What we need is something that has an authentic classic look to it and which is fairly light, with electric starting and good lights, proper oil filtration and good brakes, and with lots of aluminium and chrome to polish – a 500cc single with aluminium rims, racing seat á la AJS 7R, a 100mph performance with minimum vibration thanks to a balancer shaft, beautifully-curved tank and a megaphone-shaped silencer, and proper disc brakes to retard the proceedings.

Maybe this is the future for us classic lovers who might be clocking on a bit.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the lovely Honda GB 500TT – quitea rare beast, but they are out there and, compared to Goldies and Thruxtons, fairly inexpensive.

These cracking bikes are superreliable, quite comfortable even for this six-footer, and always draw admiring crowds of admirers at local bike meets.

I highly recommended looking around and buying one.

Bill Lomas ohc Royal Enfield story goes right back to 1950 In reply to Mr Fred Dawes’ letter about the overhead-camshaft Royal Enfield in OBM (July), the answer lies here.

In those far-off days I always looked for Cyril May’s magazines because they had such good photos.

I’ve been a reader of OBM from the year dot, so keep it up – it’s brilliant in its present format.

Geoff couldn’t resist sending us this lovely cover picture of the second issue of Motor Cycle Sport, which cost a shilling in 1950.

In response to the letter from Fred Dawes (OBM July) I can confirm that the ohc Enfield engine was on display in the window of Bill Lomas Motorcycles at Milford, Derbyshire, in the 1960s.

There’s a photo of the complete engine on page 26 of Chris Pereira’s book, British 250cc Racing Motorcycles and one of the cam box in Bill Lomas’s own book, World Champion Motorcycle Racer.

Just to keep the record straight, there were no Lomas brothers.

Harry, who ran the shop, was Bill’s father, and Bill ran the other shop at Clay Cross, near Chesterfield.

Where is my 1964 Bonneville now?

With their superb classic looks, electric start, relatively light weight, smooth ride and great lighting and braking, the Honda GB 500 TT is well worth buying once those old bones start to creak – that is if you can find one!

I was interested in the letter from Alan Seddon of British Columbia (OBM May) concerning British bikes in the 1970s, which prompted me to send in a question for ‘Where is it now?’.

In 1964, my wife-to-be and I bought a gold and white Triumph Bonneville, and after we were married, in May 1965, we rode it from Montreal to Vancouver, a distance of around 3000 miles and taking 10 days.

Being young and foolish, we considered it a truly exciting trip, and gave no thought to what we’d do if we broke down. We needn’t have worried, though, for the Bonnie ran perfectly all the way.

After settling in the Vancouver area and riding the bike around

beautiful BC, we traded it in at Cariboo Motorcycles of Coquitlam and I bought a 250cc Aermacchi to road-race at the Westwood circuit.

We left Vancouver in 1968, and never saw the Bonnie on the road again after we sold it. I’d love to know if it is still around, or from anyone who used to own it and knows what happened to it.

The engine and frame number were DU 13048.

The uplifting tale of a Moto Guzzi Lodola Friends are wonderful – including those you might not actually have met. Readers may recall that I bought a pair of 1957 Moto Guzzi Lodolas for restoration which were featured in ‘Unearthed’ in an autumn issue of OBM.

The happiness on Gavin’s face cannot be doubted as he gets to ride the bike, which he’s had repainted in the chosen colours of its last Italian owner.

One of those bikes is now a healthy runner thanks to a friend I had not met, and I am very grateful.

Back in April, after a period of good health, an illness I’d been suffering returned back with a vengeance, leaving me useless for spannering and barely enough energy to lift a tea cup!

I’d had the cycle parts of one of the Lodolas refinished very nicely by Glyn of GG Autos in London Road, Ipswich, and accumulated the top end spares needed for the engine. I wondered how to get the bike reassembled as a last hurrah!

I decided to contact Jon Frazer of Brome, mid-Suffolk, who has specialist knowledge of Lodolas as he used to import them. He was unable to take on the work, but thought he might know a Suffolk man who could – and this turned out to be the friend I had not met.

Scammers and profiteers – what happened to the good old days?

Having recently advertised a 1950s four-stroke motorcycle for sale, two things have struck me, neither of them very pleasing.

First, it became clear by the enquiries I received that the interested buyers were not concerned with riding a bike at all, and this showed by their ignorance of even the most basic knowledge of what the bike was. Their interest was based on it being an object that could be stored and brought into the daylight when a profit was likely to be gained.

Then there were the scammers who patrol the internet market.

I received an email from a buyer who offered the full asking price and said that on receipt of my name and address he would send a cheque and collect the bike at a later date. It seemed okay to me – after all, without my name and address,

how could he collect the bike and exchange paperwork?

The spelling on the email was correct, but it was the phrasing that worried me. I spoke to a relative who, unlike myself, is internet-savvy and he told me that the next message I’d receive would say that the buyer had changed his mind, didn’t now want the bike and would like a refund.

The object of this exchange was to get a cheque paid from my account into the bogus buyer’s account. I hadn’t heard of this before, and although I would have suffered no financial loss, it’s annoying to think that genuine buyers are lost.

It seems the good old days of a couple of riding enthusiasts haggling over the price of an old bike are long gone, and I thought you’d just like to make your readers aware.

Bob Foster Run entry forms can be posted out by request I fully sympathise with Keith Wareham’s letter (OBM July) and understand his desire to ride with older motorcycles, and also hear what he says about the internet issue.

I have organised the Bob Foster Run on behalf of the Dorset Centre of the Velocette Owners’ Club for the past six years after taking over from Dave Cox. In the first year I printed and posted 120 entry forms early in the year, but for a working man it was very time-consuming and quite expensive. I am computer-literate as I worked for the MoD, but do understand that many are not, and that they have no interest in information technology.

The Bob Foster is for pre1970 motorcycles and not just Velocettes, and we used to have a good percentage of ‘colour’ amid the black and gold. I think this makes the day even more pleasurable, and I’ve been trying to attract back the non-Velo brigade for several years without success.

I didn’t want to advertise in the VMCC Journal because I didn’t want to attract the ‘non-eligible’ bikes. I left the VMCC because my view of classic motorcycles is different from the VMCC’s.

Veloce, on the other hand, stopped making bikes in 1970.

I advertise the run in the Velocette Owners’ Club’s Fishtail magazine in the hope that the word would get around, but it doesn’t. I sent out the entry forms by email in late July last year, and also post hard copies to anyone who doesn’t do email. Some Velo Club members have brought up the email issue as well, but the advert says that if they call me, I’ll post out hard copies.

We would gladly welcome any pre-1970 motorcycles on our Bob Foster Run. It’s always on the first Sunday in October and covers 80 miles of decent Dorset roads with several stunning views. The whole run is marshalled by the Bournemouth and Wessex Advanced Motorcyclists, and after a lunch stop at Freshwater beach, it’s back to Crossways for a raffle, prizegiving and buffet prepared by the ladies from the Lewis-Manning Hospice.

Lowestoft, agreed to take on the project on the brief that it would need to be reassembled pretty quickly, and that my goal was a roadworthy runner and rider. It took him less than a month, despite having a number of issues to work through.

I run a monthly group called Petrolheads in my home village of Somersham, near Ipswich, at 2pm on the first Wednesday of each month, and the July meeting was marked by the arrival of a green van driven by Jon Frazer (sadly, Graham couldn’t come because of an appointment), and from the van emerged the pretty little 1957 Lodola.

I kept faith on the colours, partly with Guzzi and partly with the previous owner in Italy, who had added green. I wonder if he ever campaigned it in the Giro?

Bert Fruin – a bike builder extraordinary I enjoyed Dave Manning’s article about Murray’s Museum on the Isle of Man in the last issue, and noted the request for information about that 125cc racer. I suppose you’ll have had a few answers by now, but if not this might help.

That little bike was made by Bert Fruin, who ran a small motorcycle business in Pield Heath Road, Hillingdon, on the outskirts of Uxbridge, Middlesex – and I mean made, not just built, for Bert cast and machined all the engine parts himself in those small premises.

He was a very good engineer who also rode that bike more than once in the early 1950s, and that was good enough to encourage me and my mates to call in for anything we needed for our Triumph T110s. Anything to be

welded or machined would result in a trip along the Denham bypass to Hillingdon to pick his brains, or seek advice about becoming a racer. We were only 16, and keen to make a start in the sport.

Sometimes, mind you, we couldn’t get in, for the door would be locked, but you knew he was in there by the sound of a theatre organ and trumpet playing all the old dance tunes. When business was a bit quiet, Bert and his brother Bill would shut up shop and have a tune or two, and it was no use banging on the window either. We just had to wait until they’d had enough!

Bert also made a 250cc fourcylinder two-stroke in later days, and I think this was in the old Murray’s museum up at the Bungalow. I think time must have

caught up with Bert, for this was never really finished.

In the late 1960s, when I was racing a Bultaco TSS, I took the four-cylinder creation to Brands Hatch with my own bike and stood it on display with a cover over the top end but with the four exhausts well on display. Those were the days when you’d make a roundup of all the opposition on the day to see who’d made this mod or that lightweight part since the previous weekend, and the little four-cylinder bike really ruffled a few feathers.

It was a shame Bert himself wasn’t there, but the tale made him smile when I took the bike back.

He was a really nice man, a rose among the raving thorns.

Tuner George Todd deserves Bantam racing credit as well As a postscript to the tremendous response to the enquiry about the late Fred Launchbury, I think some credit to Fred’s success on his Bantams must go to his engine tuner, George E Todd.

Fred always entered the bikes as Todd BSAs, and George was best known in the Bantam Club as the manufacturer of the Todd head which almost everyone in the club used.

George and Fred were a dominant duo in the ‘long-stroke’ era of the Bantam Club.

George passed away only two years ago in Bavaria, where he had lived for many years after

leaving the UK to be part of the European Space Programme.

Briefly, he was an arts graduate who turned to engineering, working on guided weapons (and tuning Bantams) in Bristol, then to NASA on the European side.

After retiring he went back to the arts with a camera and produced several books about his work.

I was lucky enough to know both Fred and George quite well, George helping me out on my way in our sport with a particularly quick small-fin barrel for my Bantam. Happy days!

Ethanol in petrol Although the EU renewable fuel directive that regulates the ethanol content in petrol is in place, I understand this is measured at the refinery level, so allowing some latitude in the actual delivery content – which is possibly why, after years of rumour and gossip, at least one petrol company has said (albeit hidden in its website FAQ) that its premium brand petrol has no ethanol content (unless you live in Devon or Cornwall).

Certainly I meet a lot of old guys with cans and old vehicles at my local Esso. With 5%, 10% and 15% ethanol soon on sale, that freedom to vary content can only get wider.

London Motorcycle Museum fights on, but Reg Allen bike business is to close Ian Kerr sorts fact from fiction as he interviews London Motorcycle Museum founder Bill Crosby about the impending closure of his Reg Allen Triumph spares business while still keeping fingers crossed about the future of the museum itself.

ay back in 1897, when motorcycles were in their infancy, the great American humourist and author Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was in London trying to raise money to pay off his debts. A rumour was started that he was gravely ill and had then died, leading to his often misquoted saying: “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”

What he actually said was, “The report of my death was an exaggeration” – a subtle difference, maybe, but it changes how the news is perceived. So when Bill Crosby announced that he was shutting up his Reg Allen shop, people wrongly assumed that the London Motorcycle Museum was also being closed, because Bill is its founder and main driving force.

An article appeared on the web mentioning the museum alongside the news about the shop, and reporting that the museum was in need of funds in order to keep paying the ridiculous yearly bill charged by Ealing Council, but that has been true for the past three or four years.

All of a sudden there was flood of people stating that they intended to visit the museum before it closed, and asking where they would get their Triumph spares from when the Reg Allen business was closed?

Funny how people react when they are going to lose something they have not supported while it was in existence!

Remaining open

The basic facts are that the Reg Allen shop will be closed by the end of the year, but that the museum in Greenford will remain open while attempts are made to find a benefactor and/or new and more affordable premises.

Of course it’s sad to report that one of the last true oldschool motorcycle dealerships is shutting its doors, but one has to face facts. It is located in West London among some of the now-expensive and desirable housing, and therefore worth a lot of money to a developer.

The council is the same as the one that charges the museum, so rates are not cheap.

Over the past few years regular emails have been asking, say, the price of 30 parts, which take time to answer, and as Bill says: “We know the same email has gone out to other dealers, and you eventually

get an order for three or four parts as the sender has cherry-picked the cheapest ones from each dealer.

That is not cost-effective and does not pay the bills.”

Autojumbles have also destroyed business as everyone searches for the cheapest prices, but still expects the expertise that Bill has after 60 years in the trade having worked on the bikes when they were new, to be available free of charge when they find that parts do not fit, or are the wrong ones for a particular model. “Some want 1960s’ prices as well,” said Bill as we talked about the closure.

What everyone forgets is that bills have to be paid, and at 86 years old, Bill has reached the conclusion that it’s time to retire and sell off stock and second-hand parts from his new home on the outskirts of London, and maybe complete a few more bikes for display in the museum as he will have more time for the projects.

End of a long run

Roundtank is a tidy reminder of when BSA was the favoured ride-to-workmachine provider.

It is, though, the end of a long run that saw the shop open in 1958 when an enthusiastic Bill bought the name and goodwill from retiring dealer Reg Allen in W13, thinking that would be a better option than starting a motorcycle dealership from scratch.

After months of waiting for Reg Allen to move from the shop, it transpired that the premises were not part of the deal, and that all he had actually bought was a neon sign that quickly fused itself!

A hunt for premises in the same area found the first part of the present shop in Grosvenor Road, W7. Believing that calling the shop Reg Allen was going to attract lots of the previous customers, he quickly found that he had assumed wrongly!

The shop is still painted in Amaranth Red, with a set of girder forks for a shop door handle, and the inside is much the same as when it was opened 60 years ago. Proudly displaying the (original) Triumph name everywhere, it’s the sort of dealership that probably inspired many of us to take up motorcycling – one that you pressed your nose up against as a schoolkid gazing at the bikes, parts and accessories that were haphazardly arranged and filling every available space.

and initially became an agent for several marques like Mobylette and NSU Quickly, as well as having an agency for Excelsior, and it wasn’t until 1977 that he actually became a Triumph Main Agent.

With regular repair work, business gradually flourished and he acquired the adjacent premises to house the new and second-hand spares, giving an impressive frontage.

For Bill, though, it was the competition side that really interested him, and while he might not have been able to compete himself due to a disability caused by a motorcycle accident, his generosity saw him sponsor riders taking part in grasstrack, speedway, trials and, later, road racing with some considerable success at home and abroad, with the likes of Peter Bates on Reg Allen machinery.

When Meriden closed in 1983, along with the remaining four dealers Bill formed Lectra Manufacturing to ensure a reliable source of Triumph spares.

Employing ex-Meriden personnel, they sourced parts from the original suppliers and supplied the trade both here and in the USA until demand dropped and the company had to fold.

Bill was then appointed a Norton Rotary dealer, and had a few profitable years servicing fleets owned by the MOD, AA and the BBC to name but a few. When Norton too eventually folded, he took up the Royal Enfield franchise for a while as well as continuing with the supply of Triumph parts for the Meriden machines which he still does to this day, as well as fighting hard to keep the museum open.

If the headlines about the museum are to remain a Donald Trump ‘misinformation news story’ and not become fact, help is still needed to fund the museum – and this can be done by visiting it at weekends or on a Monday when it is open, or by making a donation via the ‘Just Giving’ page which is accessible via Facebook and the museum website, www.london-motorcycle-museum. org .

Remembering a fine sidecar business

Mick Payne looks back fondly on the years of Charnwood Classic Restorations of Hugglescote, Leicestershire – once known as the ‘one-stop sidecar shop’.

L

ast month I mentioned those sidecar makes that didn’t make it into Geoff Brazendale’s The Sidecar, a History. This was never meant to be a slight on the book but rather to point out how very difficult it is to compile a definitive list of anything.

One that does slip the net is a make that I had a lot of contact with in my days writing for Motorcycle Sport. Jim and Rose D’Arcy ran Charnwood Classic Restorations from a shop and extensive workshops attached to their home in Hugglescote, Leicestershire.

CCR fitted the writer’s own Triumph T140 with this Meteor sidecar.

If ever there was a ‘proper’ sidecar dealership since the heyday of the 1950s and 60s, it was this one.

Most sidecar sellers and builders were pretty much hidden away in industrial units, often in rural locations, but if not exactly in a town centre location, CCR was at least among other shops and businesses.

They even had a showroom with everything you might need for a restoration or simply fitting your own chair, and this was also where Rose worked on the ‘software’ – nothing to do with computing, but rather all the seat coverings, hoods and trims that makes a sidecar interior.

Meanwhile Jim, along with Steve, worked out at the back restoring, building and fitting sidecars to a multitude of machines from tiddlers to superbikes. I well remember the sweaty palms caused by riding his Honda Blackbird fitted with one of his own Charnwood Sports chairs.

This was around 1999, so it’s not too far off being eligible for VMCC events. The mind boggles!

stock of vintage and classic sidecars and the wherewithal to revive them.

Charnwood were the people I entrusted to chair up both my BSA A10 and Triumph T140, with a Charnwood Meteor. The Beezer had a Watsonian VG21chassis from Charnwood’s vast stock, while the Bonnie had one of their own with a 15-inch wheel.

The big difference was that, although Steve was the fitter in both cases, there was now a different Guv’nor, for Jim and Rose, after 25 years pretty much at the top, decided to retire and sell CCR. Jez and Jude Beswick took over the reins and moved the business to Shepshed, near Loughborough, in – yep! – an industrial unit. That was back in 2010 and I well remember a friend, Bill Moore, saying tongue-incheek: “When Jim had an open day we got a hog-roast, but here we get a cake. I do hope this isn’t an omen.”

Bill had meant it as a joke, but it wasn’t long before the business closed its doors, Jez disappeared from the scene, and unfortunately Jim got a lot of grief from disgruntled Charnwood customers – 25 years of good trading followed by such a short period in new hands.

It was a sad end to the sidecar world’s ‘One Stop Sidecar Shop’.

Going to school was never so appealing

Mike Hailwood’s TT F1 Ducatis The wrong photo of a Ducati-mounted Mike Hailwood was used in last month’s story about ‘Mike the Bike’ being inducted into the Motor Sport Hall of Fame.

The picture actually showed him riding the 950 F1 machine in the 1979 race, in which he finished a disappointing fifth, rather than on the 833 machine which he rode to an historic Isle of Man comeback victory in the 1978 F1 race.

In an interview with Alan Cathcart, Steve Wynne of Sports Motor Cycles recalled

how, in 1978, Mike topped the F1 TT leaderboard with a new record lap of 111mph, yet was convinced he’d done only 105mph because the V-twin was so easy and relaxing to ride.

If we’d looked more carefully at last month’s photo, we’d have spotted the differences, not only in the overall graphics of the red and green machine, but also the differences in the race numbers. In 1978 Mike raced with No 12, whereas the following year it was No 14.

Last month’s photo showed Mike on the 1979 TT F1 Ducati, with the racing number 14, on which he finished a disappointing fifth.

The 1979 race was dominated by Alex George, who had replaced the injured Mick Grant in the Honda Britain team, and although Mike was battling with Ron Haslam for third, mechanical problems relegated the Ducati to fifth place.

Mike’s 1979 TT visit is best remembered for his Senior win on the 500cc four-cylinder Suzuki two-stroke, but in the six-lap Classic Race that marked Mike’s final appearance on the Mountain Circuit, after fighting a tremendous battle with Alex George on a 1000cc Honda Britain machine, the Suzukimounted Mike had to concede victory by just 3.5 seconds.

This year’s Borders Classic Bike Show will take place at Lacon Childe School in Love Lane, Cleobury Mortimer, Shropshire DY14 8PE from 10am until 4.30pm on Sunday, September 9.

The entrance is being moved to the front of the attractive school, where visitors will be greeted by an array of jumble stalls before paying to enter the show boasting two halls of bikes and club stands.

As usual, excellent catering by the school’s Parent Teacher Association will be available all day.

Panels will display rare old photos from a variety of sources of racing, trials and road riding many years ago.

Racing and sporting bikes will be fired up as they compete for the SWATS (She Would Appreciate That Sound) award, consisting of an open megaphone, in memory of Valerie Reynolds, who was the cashier on the door for 25 years and a connoisseur of bikes that reminded her of youthful days at Brands Hatch.

Competition bikes including ice, grass and road racers, trials irons and scramblers, will be on show and at 3.30pm trophies will be presented to the concours winners.

Guest of honour will be Norman Hyde, the world-renowned Triumph expert, factory development engineer and new patron of the Triumph Owners’ MCC. Entry costs £5, with free parking and free camping.

Reliving the past – four times over!

Perran Newman hadn’t swung a leg over a motorcycle in more than 20 years when a friend invited him to try four of his vintage machines along with a modern BMW for comparison – and here he recounts the experience.

A

s I enter my 72nd year, it’s 22 years since I last rode a bike and more like 55 years since I did any serious mileage. I ponder whether it’s now really all in the past, just memories of the sensations of speed, the wind in my face, swinging through the highways and the byways of my youth.

Then a rare opportunity comes my way.

My last bike rides were with Tony, both of us on 350cc BSA B31s. He now tells me he has a few vintage bikes and that I’m welcome to come and try riding some of them.

My feelings about this are agonising. Is it a last chance before saying farewell to bikes forever? Am I even capable of rising to the challenge? Besides, there is the issue of sheer physical strength, for I’ve developed peripheral neuropathy, which means that my feet do not give me the feedback they should. I’m not entirely sure where they are and what they are feeling.

These issues will probably get worse, so I decide in a moment of intense clarity that it’s now or never, and we arrange a date for my visit – two days of riding bikes again!

The weather is good in early June and, having bought a new helmet (the mice made a nest in the old one) and with the Belstaff wiped down, I arrive at Tony’s house and there on the drive, acting as a signpost, is his green B31, a rigid model from 1949.

The adventure is about to begin and my confidence is soaring as I sit astride the machine and everything seems familiar and safe. Tony chooses to ride a 1930 Sunbeam Model 9, a 500cc ohv machine with hand gear change, and we set off for a local market town. There we can command the square with our presence while eating, drinking and reminiscing.

We seem to attract attention from young and old alike, and pictures are requested and taken. I must briefly mention that the B31 kick start return spring had failed during Tony’s earlier shakedown of the bikes, so a bump start is necessary in front of the onlookers. I sit aboard and Tony pushes me off – how different from when I was 18 and I could do this myself with a short run and a jump into the saddle.

On the way home through quiet country lanes, devoid of any traffic, it’s my turn to ride the Sunbeam. It’s the first time for me on a hand-change bike, so the controls and techniques are explained, Tony starts it up and I’m on my own. A loss of face is the motivator, but the risks to this proud machine by an incompetent elderly man is the moderating force.

We get underway and I go up through the three gears with suitable protests from the gearbox. I haven’t appreciated that you don’t look down to change gear but go by feel alone, so when we pass through a village I minimise gear changes by retarding the ignition. The sheer slogging power of the five-hundred is impressive and when given its head the bike flies along with a graceful ease.

As we approach the more built-up area I hand back the bike and then follow Tony as he negotiates traffic, roundabouts and junctions. He confides that he would happily commute on such a machine if necessary.

Back at base with a cup of tea I begin to relax again. Trying to explain the complex mix of feelings that I’ve had is difficult, but the over-riding one has been my fear of damaging a precious machine through my unfamiliarity and lack of experience.

Braking in particular has been the bogey, as the issue with my feet has been a significant factor.

Next, it’s a hand-change Sunbeam Model 9 – still an impressive slogger when given its head.

After talking about the machines available to us, we plan a museum outing for the following day. I’ve done my homework on YouTube and conclude that the 1930 Scott Flying Squirrel must be tried. Tony also has a 1914 Douglas as used by dispatch riders in World War One. Because I once owned a Mk V and have ridden a Dragonfly, as well as belonging to the Douglas Club for many years, this is a must. It will also give ‘reliving the past’ a totally different meaning.

However the present also shows its face in the guise of a BMW R nine T, a muchacclaimed bike that’s been designed with customising in mind. As it turns out, I’m given the keys by the roadside with the option of the BMW or continuing with the Scott.

Tony lets me start off on the Scott – an awful responsibility in my opinion – but luckily the bike is very happy revving freely, so for the first mile on fairly busy roads I leave it in first gear and howl along at around 30 mph. As the road quietens, I’m able to get into third gear, still making the mistake of looking down to manipulate the lever. The 600cc two-stroke has plenty of power and a sound to match, and I’m really beginning to appreciate the experience. The power is delivered so smoothly and the low centre of gravity feels very safe. Confidence in being able to brake safely is the final arbiter in my hand signals to Tony that it’s time to stop.

So I get straight onto a 110 hp modern machine with the words: “One down, five up and watch the front brake – it’s a real stopper!”

I know this is a paper about classic machinery, so I’ll keep my comments to a minimum, but this is the first truly modern bike I’ve ridden, and the experience is not what I expected. The fact that I’m quickly at ease speaks for itself and following Tony on the Scott means I have to hurry along as Tony is using all the features of the historic two-stroke.

After a while, and fed up with the constant blue haze and smell of burnt oil from the Scott stroke, I feel it necessary to rush by, if only to allow him to see his bike from an unusual angle. This action alone shows how confident I’ve become, but I’m not prepared for the harshness at low speed through the villages.

Perran soon felt at ease on the modern 110hp BMW, but of course he found it nothing like the leisurely pootlers he was used to.

The B31 will amble along without snatch if the ignition is retarded, but the BMW needs a very steady hand on the throttle. Even the slightest movement that occurs during natural steering causes the power to appear, which then needs to be corrected, leading to what I can only describe as unwanted small snatches – none of the softness of the B31 that makes pootling along such a pleasure.

Do all modern bikers have to put up with this, I think, or is it my inexperience? If it’s the former, then motorcycling has lost some of its charm in the headlong adrenalin rush that it appears to occupy.

With our museum visit over, it’s back at base again. The end of the trip is in sight, but not before sampling the passage of more than 100 years and the 1914 Douglas.

A quiet piece of road about five miles away is selected and Tony rides like a dispatch rider as I follow on the BMW, never feeling that I’m having to ride too slowly and

marvelling at the progress we’re making in modern traffic conditions.

Tony is confident enough to paddle away the clutchless machine before dropping the valve-lifter, and to turn into main roads from rest.

When we reach our selected piece of ‘quiet straight road’, my briefing begins. “Air lever, throttle, oil pump, gear change, valve-lifter…” and after mentally and physically bracing myself I try to paddle off. These 72-year-old legs and associated muscles are not really up to the job, and a backfire causes the belt fastener to release and deposit the said belt onto the road.

Unfazed, Tony rejoins it and this time gives me a strong, long push and we are away. Every impulse from the horizontal twin is felt, and with judicious use of the air lever and throttle we gain speed. Second gear is engaged and I start to relax, sitting more upright and dropping the hunched shoulders. This is fun, but with no real understanding of the brakes I

elect to drift to a halt and wait for my untiring helper to restart me for a second run.

Looking back, I wish I’d had spent more time on all three vintage machines, gaining in confidence in gear-changing and braking as the true character and charm of these geriatrics became apparent.

Maybe my feet would always cause anxiety – I’ll never know – but as Tony took the Dougie back to suburbia, by the time I was aboard the Beemer and ready to go, he was half a mile down the road and doing 30 mph.

And so my nostalgic two days came to an end in relaxing chat, food and shared music before hitting the pillow under the eaves.

Writing this piece is helping me to come to terms with the wonderful experience of returning to biking again after such a long absence.

Did I leave it too long? Of course I did – but luckily not so long that I couldn’t fully experience the delights of biking again.

Tony’s 1930 600cc Scott Flying Squirrel was the third vintage motorcycle that Perran tried out – and with its low centre of gravity, free-revving engine and sound to match, it was a delight to ride.

A coffee-bar cowboy’s tale of a Triton John Edwards tells the story of a Triton dream – with a Norton Dominator rolling chassis that cost £16 and an engine from a 1953 sprung-hub Triumph Tiger 100 whose owner parted with the whole bike for a fiver!

A

s a coffee-bar cowboy in the early Sixties, I loved the look of the BSA Gold Stars and the Triton specials. However, I wasn’t so enamoured that I was prepared to part with my beloved Matchless G12CSR in order to get hold of either one.

I had ridden a couple of ‘Goldies’, and although they were superb machines, I never wanted one myself. To me, they were too much of a racer, not suited for longdistance road trips.

In those coffee-bar days one of our gang, Johnny Thompson, had let me ride his very standard-looking 500cc Norton Dominator and I’d been immensely impressed. Irrespective of its capacity, it was one of the most delightfully smooth, willing and rapid motorcycles I ever rode. This was possibly because Johnny’s dad, Gordon, who had built the engine, ran a much-respected local engine tuning business.

When later circumstances – more money and a rented lock-up – allowed me the luxury of owning several bikes, I remembered Johnny’s bike and decided to build myself a 500cc Triton, aiming for a similar gem. If I could locate one, I hoped to use Triumph’s lovely 1950s all-alloy motor.

The build started in the autumn of 1963 with a 1960 Norton rolling chassis with, as I recall, a red frame.

Interestingly, this colour was the one introduced by Norton’s paint shop without official sanction in 1957 for the ‘99’ Dominators destined for the American market. The experiment was such a success that eventually some red Dommies appeared on the British market as well, and this apparently was one such example.

The rolling chassis cost me £16 and

the engine was from a 1953 sprunghub Triumph T100 that had been advertised locally as a ‘non-runner’ with clutch problems.

When I went to view it, the Triumph was totally complete but looked rather neglected. I noted that the clutch cable was not properly connected to the handlebar lever.

The engine – the desirable and hoped for all-alloy version – started after a few kicks and sounded OK. The owner obviously had very little interest in the bike so I made no attempt to point out the clutch cable problem and I offered a fiver for it. To my immense surprise, he accepted without hesitation. As he lived on a hill, I decided to roll the bike down and out of sight round a corner before stopping to fix the cable. With this sorted, the clutch worked fine and I rode the bike home. Patently, it was a steal.

With hindsight, I think this was maybe all a bit mean. It gets worse.

A few days later, I went for a proper, out-of-town ride on the bike, discovering that the engine was bliss but the handling was scarily diabolical. Actually, I’ve ridden quite a few 1950s Triumphs and found the handling on all of them to be ‘interesting’ and often, downright alarming.

Having removed the engine and gearbox and decided that this particular Triumph was simply old and not of much interest, the rolling chassis lingered in my garage for a couple of years and was eventually loaded into the back of my ratty little Morris Minor van and taken to the local landfill site. It is almost certainly still there, buried under several tons of rubbish. Now, of course, I feel really guilty about this

sacrilege, knowing that I should have saved the thing for posterity!

Ironically, I still have the old buff log book for this Triumph donor.

The registration number was PBP 92.

The first owner was a Peter Cooper from Plaistow in Sussex. Anyone remember it?

Money being the limiting factor, as I had other motorcycling fish to fry, I finished the Triton build in early 1966. The engine went in with an AMC gearbox using engine plates from Dave Degens’ Dresda Autos shop. Dresda also supplied the central oil tank, the seat and the genuine Manx alloy petrol tank, which I remember very warily later carrying home to Brighton strapped to the pillion seat of my G12CSR Matchless. The Triton’s pipes and silencers came from Paul Dunstall’s and the TLS front brake plate and rear-sets were John Tickle items. I never did get round to having the wheels rebuilt with alloy rims.

The plan had been to use the Triton for the upcoming annual trip to the TT races that June. The seamen’s strike put an end to that idea and I and a couple of friends, Chris Peet and Ron Burgoyne – both great bike enthusiasts who I’m sure will be remembered by more than a few guys of our generation – decided to do the rescheduled TT in the autumn, followed by a back-to-back trip to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix.

Well before the holiday came along, I took the Triton for a shakedown ride on one of our frequent Saturday dealer tours round London with Chris and Ron. Before we even reached London, I knew that clipons and rear-sets were not my cup of tea and that, worse, I found the Triumph motor to be far less smooth

than I had expected. I discovered eventually, but far too late, that I should have had the crankshaft rebalanced to suit the Norton frame.

As it happened, fate intervened and one of our calls was to Comerfords in Thames Ditton. In its showrooms stood a useful-looking Velocette Venom. It was the model with the two-level seat and the glass-fibre engine covers and was selling for £100. Surely, this had to be a more suitable steed for a longdistance jaunt.

at that time, who knew us all well, offered me £200 on the spot for the Triton in part-exchange if I wanted the Velo ‘as seen’. This was only £10 less then I’d spent building the Triton, so ever-impulsive, I did the deal, Bert agreeing to post me the remaining £100 on receipt of the Triton’s log book. Within an hour, the Triton was no longer mine and I was riding home on the Venom.

One last thing: Does anyone know if ‘my’ Triton still exists? The registration number, from the donor Norton, was RPN 35.

MYSTERY BIKE

Mark Greengrass in Sutton on Trent, Newark, has acquired this little twin port two-stroke Ravat in unrestored condition and seeks assistance in the restoration. He thinks the bike is a 125cc model (it’s a B48 model), and he’s been told by a previous owner that it’s a 1943 bike. It has a Zenith carburettor on the left-hand side of the barrel. He has an incomplete workshop manual in French.

Ravat started making bicycles in 1898 and made motorcycles from 1922 until 1954.

It was based in St Etienne (Loire), at one time a centre for the manufacture of cycles, automobiles and armaments. Can anyone assist with advice, parts or information? The bike has frame number 2887.

Jimmy Van Heladingen has the bike shown here which was stripped about 36 years ago.

He would like to know its identity, having been told it was a Francis-Barnett of 1927 – which clearly it’s not. The Villiers engine is stamped 539/30673 and after further research Jimmy has ascertained that the 539 prefix indicated that the engine was made for a James ML model. So…. is the frame from a James ML? The frame is stamped ML27034, so it looks likely that the whole bike is a James ML.

A7 SS REBUILD Terry Pottage, whose name you’ve already seen in this column, now sends me photographs of the BSA A7 SS which his best pal Arthur discovered languishing in a back garden where it had lain since 1976. He had intended to restore it himself, but tragically was

killed on his modern bike on the Snake Pass in Derbyshire. Terry decided to restore the bike in Arthur’s memory and, going back to his own origins in the Sixties, decided to restore it as a café racer. Three years later the restoration is complete, and here you see the bike both before and after. I think Terry’s done a super job!

DANUVIA Jim Stubbs has been renovating his Hungarian-built 1960 Danuvia. As can be seen, it has a twin downtube frame and massive brake shoes front and back (1.375 inches wide) – brilliant for a 125cc! He seeks a dating certificate so that he can register it with the DVLA. Well, back in 1960 Hungary was a satellite state of the Soviet Union and was communist controlled. The only suitable dating agency on the DVLA’s approved list is the Cossack Owners’ Club, so I should try them first. The VMCC might be an alternative. Jim will also need a NOVA certificate from HM Customs (see their website).

PUCH Bob Young has acquired the 1960 Puch 250 SG (or SGS) for restoration, and fortunately he also received the old log book with it. The bike was registered YOT 370 in June 1960 in Hampshire, and Bob should therefore be able to obtain a new V5c from the DVLA through the V765 number recovery scheme. There is no Puch club on the DVLA-approved list and the club through which I obtained V5cs for cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles for more than 40 years withdrew from the DVLA scheme over four years ago, so I’ve suggested the VMCC and given Bob the full procedure to follow.

MOTO BETA Tony Martin is trying to obtain a dating certificate for his Moto Beta 175cc Titano, which he believes was made between 1954 and 1957. This company was started by Giuseppe Bianchi in 1948 (some sources say 1904) in Florence, but its headquarters are now located at Rignano sull’Arno. I am sure they are still in business, and the DVLA insists that when a company is still in existence, any dating certificate must come from the company. Here are photographs of his Beta Titano and a copy of the firm’s brochure for this model.

KTT VELO Nick Farthing has this 1930 Velocette KTT purchased from Solvang Motor Museum in the USA, which bought it from Jim Gleed of Atlantic Motorcycles back in 1984. It’s registered WE 8192 and has frame number DX3590 and engine number KTT219. It was dispatched from Velocette to Don Bradbury of Sheffield on April 14, 1930. Sadly the 1930 Sheffield registration records are missing and while the DVLA has some post-1984 information on file, it needs some pre-1984 evidence to link the registration number to the bike. I’ve suggested he contact Ivan Rhodes at the Velocette Owners’ Club to see if he has pre-1984 records of the bike showing the registration number.

MALLEE David Vaughan in Australia recently featured a 1905 Mallee motorcycle in the magazine of his local club. I asked him for more details and he has now sent me these photographs of the bike, both before and following restoration by local enthusiasts. The bike was apparently assembled by Harry H Mercer in his Mallee Cycle Works in Scott Street, Warracknabeal, Victoria. It was powered

(as so many early assembled motorcycles were) by a 2¾hp Minerva engine. It also employed BSA frame parts and forks, and was the only one made. In later years Mercer was agent for A G Healing & Co, which was a maker of motorcycles from 1903 until 1918, so it would have been unlikely that Mercer would have competed against them. The bike was displayed at the 1910 Warracknabeal Show, and 111 years later was displayed at the same show.

Although the popularity of ‘Unearthed’ means I’ve been able to keep it going despite no longer being able to liaise directly with the DVLA about registration queries, I do urge readers to keep their correspondence coming.

This will enable me to continue pointing readers in the right direction, and such letters are always of immense interest to OBM’s readership as a whole.

The design is unusual, lacking a down tube and with the 100cc engine horizontal and seemingly unsupported.

feedback Alun Chaplin tells me that in a recent eBay job lot he came across a bill of sale from 1971 for a Norton registered 500 CWA (previously registered with British Forces in Germany) and bearing engine and frame number R14D 91471. The price? £35! Does the bike still exist? If it does, and the current owner would like the receipt to add to the machine’s history, Alun will post it free of charge if the address is given.

Mike Vincent in Thatcham, Berkshire, was recently cleaning out his old workshop which he built in 1966 at the end of his parent’s garden. Among the junk he found an old aluminium cylinder head [Pic.1, Pic.2] and assumed it was off one of the old BSA 250 singles he owned at the time the shed was built. On closer inspection, however, he noticed that it had a number of unusual features, and neither he nor his friends have been able to identify it.

It doesn’t appear to have been on any motorcycle that Mike can remember owning. It’s definitely from an engine rather than, for example, a compressor, as combustion deposits are present in both ports. There is no spark plug thread or, in fact, anywhere to install a spark plug. Could it in fact have come from a diesel? There is no combustion chamber in the cylinder head (it’s virtually flat), so it must have been in the piston crown.

initially counter-bored 22mm x 68mm deep. It then reduces 9mm diameter and emerges into the combustion chamber between inlet and exhaust valves. Might a decompressor have been mounted in this port? It seems doubtful if any kind of spark plug could have been mounted in the port.

All threads are Imperial, there’s a small female thread in the side of the cylinder head (about 8mm diameter) which may be for a head stay. There are no markings on the head anywhere. Mike would like to find a good home for it.

Keith Lovell in Sevenoaks seeks the identity of the frame shown here [Pic.3, Pic.4]. The head stock was corroded, hence the remains of the NDT developer which Keith used

to sharpen up the frame number, which appears to be XT 350 (the T and the 0 are corroded so could be questionable). If its identity can be ascertained, then Keith could have a chance to measure the rear frame on a similar bike and either replicate or source it.

Peter Cowlam wonders if anyone can identify the make and possibly the date of manufacture of the bike shown in this period photograph [Pic.5] taken during the period of the Great War – possibly 1916/17.

Well, the registration series LP was issued initially in September 1915 and ran until July 1916. It’s a London series and sadly the records have been destroyed. The engine of the bike looks interesting, however, and I’d guess it’s American – Ace or Henderson, perhaps?

Colin Ogden remarks on the BSA Bantam owned by Alan Betts and featured in the June issue. He says the engine appears to have a centre spark plug, indicating that it’s a B175 engine, and the chrome mudguards suggest a B175 Sport model, as does the chrome headlight and the heavyweight front forks.

Matthew Chamley provides the following translation of the maker’s plate in Ifan Devine’s IZH Planeta in the June issue: “Model IZH-P Year of Issue 1963, Motorcycle number B7----, capacity 346cc.

Built in USSR”. Mike Drakeley in Burton Green, Coventry, sends me this photograph [Pic.6] for identification. It shows his motherin-law and her mother with an unidentified bike. Can anyone recognise the make?

Mr B J Hull responds to Andrew Dyer’s query in the June ‘Feedback’.

He confirms that he purchased a 1935 Triumph 3/1 in 1980 in a dismantled state. It came with a buff log book, bore frame number SL 3986, engine number 1826 and was registered on December 2, 1935. A side valve 349cc model with four speed hand change, it had a Duplex frame so Andrew’s isn’t the only Duplex example.

he enclosed confirmed that Cams 4220 were used in the standard 1961 and 1962 Thunderbird for touring purposes, and the cam form itself was used also in the Thruxton Bonneville in conjunction with threeinch radius cam followers, and a highly-specialised tuning sequence including a special exhaust system.

The company added, however, that in its opinion these camshafts were not really suitable for normal high-performance preparations and were not recommended. Mr Smith added that E3134 should be used for inlet, E3325 for exhaust (very good on the road) and E3059R for followers. Mr Smith is on 01257 451570 if further detail is required.

Concerning the IZH Planeta in the June issue, Dave Cooke says he has two English-speaking friends in Russia. If any translation problems arise (eg if an instruction book turns up), clear photographs sent to him can provide translations.

Neither is a motorcyclist and neither has any technical knowledge of this bike.

Simon Duerden in Holland sent me the photograph of a Rene Gillet taken in June 1913 [Pic.7] at Fontainebleau and featured in the magazine of the Veteraan Motoren Club, to whom grateful acknowledgements are made.

Rene Gillet was in business from 1898 until 1957, and its famous V-twins (like this one) were made from 1904 and supplied in large numbers to the French army and the police.

Nick Smith writes concerning the unidentified pioneer in the June issue. He thinks the frame is redolent of Levis offerings from the veteran and early vintage period [Pic.8]. The twin top tubes make him think of the No.1 model announced for 1913 which had 25in by 2in wheels and a 269cc engine (bigger than the Popular and the Baby). He considers the plates on the bottom bracket are non-original, but this shouldn’t be difficult to rectify. A frame number should be on the saddle lug.

Bikes and bits in every nook and cranny!

While taking part in a French motorcycling event, Ian Kerr stumbles across a charming motorcycle museum in the historic town of Entrevaux.

T

he annual five-day Drailles event, run by the Moto Club Senas Durance that’s based in the town of the same name in Provence in the South of France, celebrated its seventh birthday this year with a run based in Annot, just above Nice, in June.

Each day the 200km routes explored some of the stunning scenery, including a trip up the infamous Col de la Bonette, the highest paved route in the Alps, which took riders well up into the snow line despite searing heat melting the tar on other roads.

On the final day, riders tackled the equally-spectacular Verdon Gorge, a real motorcycling road, but on an almost daily basis the runs started by leaving Annot and heading out through Entrevaux, a commune and former episcopal state in

France’s Alpes-de-Haute Provence department.

The town is on both sides of the road that runs from Annot to PugetTheniers, which then eventually winds its way down the valley following the river Var to Nice. On one side is a fairly modern set of buildings, including hotels and cafes, but on the other sits a medieval city overlooked by the towering citadel built by Vauban in the 1690s – especially interesting as the entrance to the labyrinth of narrow streets and quaint dwellings formed by massively thick stone walls is by a drawbridge!

understanding French. Following these signs, you eventually come across what appears to be a doorway to one of the many houses, and you are greeted by either Michel Lucani or his son Franck, sitting at the doorway of an Aladdin’s cave of motorcycle history. It’s open from 10am until noon, and then from 2-6pm, and entry is free, although donations are welcomed.

The museum opened in 1981 to showcase a collection of 75 machines from all over the world, the oldest being from 1901 and the newest from the early 1970s. The bikes are arranged on two floors that appear to have been hewn out of solid rock, hung from the ceiling or balanced on rails high up the walls.

How did they get there?

Despite the obvious motorcycle interest, some of the typical visitor’s time is spent trying to work out how the bikes were transported there and brought through the narrow doorway!

Decorating the spaces between the bikes themselves are engines, posters, primitive helmets and associated memorabilia. Bikes range from the concours, such as a 1917 Harley-Davidson, to ‘oily rag’ barn finds. Most countries in Europe are represented, with the main focus on France and Italy.

Ducati enthusiasts may be offended by the 1949 Cuccilo painted all blue and British fans will find just a few machines including a Royal Enfield single from 1952 and a 1951 LE Velocette, but there are some fascinating machines from the 1920s, and well worth a look is the 98cc Narcisse tandem from 1951 mounted high in the ceiling. The Poropat Bi Moteur is also worth a long lingering look to see how the two motors drive the machine!

Surrounded by all kinds of motorcycling memorabilia, a belt-drive OCS motorcycle stands frozen in time – and ‘Ne pas toucher’ means exactly what it says!

Well worth a visit

It might be a small collection and easily missed, but a good half hour can easily be spent examining the well-lit machines and increasing your knowledge of European motorcycle history, so if you’re

ever in the area, it’s worth stopping or making a detour and then wandering around the historic town and enjoying the magnificent views over a coffee before sampling the excellent well-surfaced roads that surround it.

Crammed up in the rafters, this Narcisse leaves many visitors scratching their heads.

The Craven Collection Dave Manning heads to the Yorkshire Wolds for an eye-opening look at memorabilia and history

W

hile formal museums can display their exhibits in a brightly-lit blaze of formality, there is sometimes a cold feeling of detachment and a lack of soul and passion. Fortunately, motorcycle museums are rarely of this form, and more usually consist of a mind-bending visual assault that takes more than one visit to fully comprehend. The Craven Collection falls into the latter camp, being one man’s personal collection that isn’t run on any commercial basis, but opens its doors once a month to those discerning motorcyclists who want to both look into the past and gain themselves a sense of inferiority when they look in awe upon what just one man has amassed.

Grasstrack champ

Ex-garage owner, sprint racer and four time East Yorkshire grasstrack sidecar champion, Dick Craven, is one of those folk who find it difficult to let go of any kind of bikes he acquires, and his eclectic collection of machinery first opened to the public in 1994, at a time when he was first becoming involved in local TV work.

And that’s what Dick’s collection is probably best known for – the number of bikes that have been used in TV work, primarily the police drama, Heartbeat, but various other TV programmes and films as well.

The Yamaha XT and the tank and phone that were used to make it look like a period police bike.

Based around the village of Goathland in North Yorkshire, Heartbeat’s 18 series were set in the Sixties and needed appropriate vehicles to add flavour to the cinematography. Those bikes in the collection that were used in the filming are marked with a heartshaped red sticker on the headlight, and it’s amazing just how many of them there are.

While most of them are period appropriate machines, being built in the mid-Sixties or earlier, one later bike – an Eighties Yamaha XT – was used for stunt work after being modified by Dick to look like an old BSA police bike, complete with BSA fuel tank and police telephone mounted on the top. When the bikes were being used for the programme, Dick not only supplied them, but also maintained, modified and repaired them, and actually owned a few cars and vans that were also used, but sold them once Heartbeat was dropped by ITV. But there is far more to the Craven Collection than ex-TV stars. And while there are over 250 vintage and classic postwar bikes, there’s lots more too – each and every spare foot on the floor, walls and even ceiling has bikes, bike parts and spares, oil cans, road signs, clothing, advertising signs and banners, photographs, manuals and other paraphernalia. And what makes it

all the more impressive is that this isn’t just one room – I actually lost count of how many doorways I went through, only to stop midstride each and every time when confronted by yet another shed full of motorcycling history. I was fortunate enough to be given a full tour by Dick, complete with his typical dour Yorkshire wit and honesty and, while a delicate person may blush at his turn of phrase, he gave a fascinating commentary for the amazingly varied collection.

Saved from scrap

While much of the collection was simply thanks to Dick being a bikemad bloke who didn’t want to sell anything, living next to a scrapyard also meant that Dick got the pick of the scrap that was brought in, with all manner of road signs and advertising signs being weighed in as scrap swiftly being taken out for use as museum art. He also added to the bikes when certain machines were required for the TV work while, as is often the case with people who have a lot of stuff, people kept asking him if he wanted more. It’s fairly obvious that he would never turn anything down.

Dick has accumulated some artefacts while he’s been out and about too. Take, as an example, the AA phone box. He’d spotted the top half of it being used as a dog kennel, so after making the owner a cheeky offer, he then reconstructed the rest of the box by measuring up a complete box that was still in situ locally. Aside from the AA corner, there’s also a police section, a military section, a scooter section, a trials section and a variety of sidecars too, including a couple of Dick’s old grasstrack racing outfits that he rode so successfully back in the late Sixties.

All those bikes with a little red heart on the headlight were used in Heartbeat, and there are loads of them.

The workshop area isn’t where Dick does his maintenance, but contains many tools that are still used regularly.

All the machinery in the collection are runners, and Dick does all his own maintenance in a workshop to the side of the museum, including his own dynamometer.

The dyno proved invaluable for development work on the Craven Vincents, and they now make really impressive power, and he still sprints those Vincent singles and V-twins, and rides another on the road. Although none of them are what you could term as being factory standard, with Dick being

a firm proponent of fitting the Stevenage twins and singles into Norton Featherbed frames. You can see him, and the Norvins, in action at the George Brown Memorial Sprint at East Kirkby in Lincolnshire on August 11/12.

The Craven Collection is open on the first Sunday of every month until October 7, after which the doors are closed until the 2019 season, although arrangements can be made for private club visits. More info can be found at www.cravencollection.co.uk

Anniversaries, sentiments and the Yamaha YR1 With many anniversaries of significant Japanese motorcycles coming up, Steve Cooper looks at one we almost completely forgot last year – the golden anniversary of Yamaha’s groundbreaking YR1 350cc two-stroke twin.

T

he marking of special occasions comes under the umbrella title of ‘anniversary’ or, to use the dictionary definition, the date on which an event took place or an institution was founded in a previous year – so we’ll add machine launches to that as well – and fortuitously, 2018 is a good year for them with various popular classics marking significant milestones.

It’s worth remembering that in almost every instance the Japanese factories gave precious little emotional attachment to their products.

Bikes that might have been supremely significant to a company’s expansion, its success on the race tracks, its sales figures and in some cases even its commercial future have received little in the way of home-spun recognition.

At times, Honda has insisted that mainstream prototypes, and even racewinning bikes, be cut up, crushed or otherwise rendered as scrap. Yamaha has also been vague about the fate of numerous machines, denying that any of the mystical GL750 four-pot two-stroke superbike prototypes still exist – yet more than one insider has caught a glimpse of the bike’s unique white vinyl seat cover in a secure strongroom. Perhaps the senior management nip down the basement for a look at what might have been every now and again when they’re having a bad day?

Suzuki hasn’t been immune to ignoring its corporate past either, for it’s well documented that numerous quantities of parts and models from Hamamatsu’s racing days were used as hard core under the floor of a factory extension! It’s enough to make a grown motorcyclists cry.

Thankfully the Big Four, including of course Kawasaki, have been moved by the collective powers of public pressure, the burgeoning classic scene and an ever-ageing demographic, to embrace rather than ignore their history.

Each manufacturer approaches the classic scene with a different mindset, but at least they are finally in contact with their past.

Arguably Suzuki is the most pro-active, having unearthed caches of previouslyforgotten spares, tooled up and turned out small batches of long-obsolete vital parts and asked for dealer/importer ideas on what to replicate next.

Kawasaki has taken a different tack by producing modern machines that look like their legendary 1970s’ firebrands, and Yamaha – being Yamaha – is taking a totally novel approach by dressing current machines in retro panels and paint to get older riders

interested once more.

Finally, it’s rumoured that even The Big Aitch is getting onto the bandwagon, for limited supplies of parts for iconic late 1960s/ early 70s machines are said to be just around the corner.

All of which augurs well for an ageing demographic – us! Recent surveys all seem to concur that the age of the average motorcyclist, if such a creature exists, is 55 years old and rising. Good news, you say?

Well, possibly yes and possibly no.

It’s grand that we’re all riding longer than our parents’ generation, even if it is only for fun, but it also highlights the plain and simple fact that fewer younger people are getting the riding bug.

Key machines

Over the next few issues of OBM, we’ll be looking at some of the key machines that will be marking significant anniversaries in 2018 and 2019 – but one anniversary that few if any chose to celebrate last year was the 50th birthday of Yamaha’s 350cc R1.

Many will be scratching their heads at the mere mention of the R1 moniker allied to the 350 capacity tag, but decades before the onelitre missile appeared, Yamaha launched what remains possibly its most significant machine ever, for without the R1 – or YR1 to give its full title – there would have been a real possibility that the tuning fork brand would either have faded away to nothing or become just a minor league player.

By the mid-1960s it was plain that Yamaha could not carry on trading on past glories. Its YDS 250 series, based on the German Adler MD250, had served the company well, but was beginning to show its age – and because the range utilised vertically-split crankcases, every single engine cost more than it ought to in terms of factory floor assembly time. Even more concerning was the fact that, up to that point, Yamaha had been unable to offer a fullfat 350 model to the vital American market.

The best they’d come up with was a ‘half-way house’ rework of the YDS motor with an overbore and stroke extension to deliver the 305cc YM series.

These were pretty decent machines, but the path to those additional 55ccs had consumed vital resources and capital for only moderate gains, and a new engine was now vital if Yamaha was to compete with Honda in the USA. The new YR1 350 motor was a totally fresh design from the crackcases upwards, and finally Yamaha’s engineers and draughtsmen had come up with a horizontally-split engine that reduced assembly time dramatically and thus delivered greater profits.

The new machine boasted a number of key improvements that would become standard features on numerous other machines. Iron barrels were dropped in favour of alloy castings with iron liners, the clutch was moved off the end of the crankshaft and onto the primary gear shaft, the cylinder heads had carefully-designed squish bands machined into them to deliver maximum power, and the gear and brake levers could be mounted on either side to suit rider preference.

Even if the styling now looks a bit gawky and unwieldly, back in 1967 it was the business.

Launched as the 350 Grand Prix, it proved a big hit and Yamaha went on to improve the bike for a further two years, adding extra transfer ports, revised styling and expanding the bike’s potential market by offering street scrambler versions of the YR2 and YR3.

With class-leading handling, possibly the best twin-leading-shoe front brake of the period, 36bhp and stunning reliability, the YR1 really put Yamaha on the map.

Without the YR1 there would have been no YR5 and no giant-killing RD350 that was derived from it. Neither would there have been any RD400s, 350 LCs and 350 Power Valves. That quirky mid-60s three-fifty laid down a blueprint for Yamaha that would see them making stunning two-stroke sports twins right through to 1990s, the final iteration being the water-cooled 250cc R1-Z. It just goes to show that, whether it’s a family member’s birthday, the date you were married or the year a significant motorcycle was launched, you should never, ever, ignore an anniversary!

here’s no doubt that prices for anything Japanese have escalated of late, and if the likes of eBay are anything to go by, the ‘gradient of the curve’ continues to remain steep. Online auctions have also played their part in raising prices because they’ve opened up what was once a niche market into a global one. Anyone with a laptop or smartphone can now buy a classic motorcycle or parts at the press of button – which may or may not be a good thing.

When classic bikes were essentially the province of small groups and clubs, the whole scene was much more intimate and personal. Mostly everyone knew everyone else and often had a good idea of what folk were working on and/or needed. With such a relatively small and introverted community, prices tended to self-regulate, but with the advent of the web everything changed in a short period.

Dealers with large volumes of stock suddenly had an international marketplace in which to advertise their wares, and the world of bike clubs and autojumbles changed irrevocably, but there’s no point lamenting how things used to be, for we are where we are, but the globalisation of the classic scene is not all sweetness and light, and neither is it a world of commonsense.

With the increasing interest in old bikes, there has also been an increase in ‘get rich quick’ individuals who magically sweep up old Japanese machines for peanuts and then punt them out for obscene amounts of money. It would seem that anything old and on two wheels now qualifies as a ‘barn find’ which somehow bestows greater value upon something that a decade ago would have been described as a wreck.

Add the increasingly popular trend for modifying old bikes and you have a potential recipe for the rapid extinction of what OBM readers know as ‘a good oldfashioned project’.

One level above our ‘barn find’ sellers is a dedicated band of machine modifiers who, with little apparent regard for aesthetics, suitability, value or plain old-fashioned commonsense, turn out bobbers, brats, trackers, café racers and the like. These bikes then resurface online for frankly ludicrous amounts of money and, to the amazement of many of us, sell for even more.

The recent explosion in the custom scene has raised motorcycling’s profile and dragged in many who had but a peripheral interest. Many of these wouldbe owners don’t have the time, resources or facilities to build or renovate an old bike, so the above looks like an attractive and easy way into the scene. Several thousand pounds later, the newcomer finds himself the somewhat lessthan-proud owner of a small Japanese commuter bike sporting a cheap paint job, a universal seat several sizes too big, a dubious pair of rear-sets and a wholly inappropriate set of ace bars. Money down the drain, you might well argue.

Is there an immediate remedy to this scenario? Not a chance! We live in a free market economy in which people can purchase what they want when they want it. The cynic might argue that a fool and his money are soon parted, but there is something that we, as enthusiasts, should do at every available opportunity – engage with the potential buyers of these aberrations and offer help.

The next time someone passes comment on your classic, asks a question or shows interest, point him in the right direction. Steer them towards appropriate publications, websites, Facebook pages etc. and point out the pitfalls of ill-sorted faux retro customs.

Each old bike that remains essentially original, no matter how careworn, is one that will hopefully inspire its new owner rather than put him off old bikes for life!

1936 AJS English Model 36 / 2 – 9.9 HP 990cc V-twin SV The AJS is in an unrestored original condition. I imported the motorcycle for restoration to Holland almost 30 years ago from Sri Lanka. Unfortunately I had no time and possibility to restore it. It is not in running condition but 99% complete.

The Ignition and dynamo are already redone. It has been exported from Sri Lanka with a different licence plate, so we removed the engine number in order to get the motorcycle out of the country, what was not allowed for things from before their independence in 1948. So the engine number should be changed to the original. I only know the original engine number. There is no Dutch licence on it because it must be restored first, but the import papers to Europe are present.
