It was only three issues ago that John Surtees CBE, who sadly passed away on March 10, sent an email to Old Bike Mart that was duly published on our readers’ letters pages.

It wasn’t about his seven motorcycling world championships, his six Isle of Man TT victories, or his 1967 Formula 1 world championship, but rather, more modestly, the very start of his road racing career, and in particular the kindness shown to him by Dai and Marion Pryce at Aberdare, South Wales, where he chalked up his first road race win.

‘Anyone can win on an MV’ might well have been a common opinion expressed by road racing enthusiasts during that golden age of the 1950s and 60s, but such sentiments rarely took into account the sheer hard work and dedication that earned competitors those factory rides in the first place.

John Surtees’ life was marked by both triumph and tragedy, and

two abiding legacies are the Henry Surtees Foundation, which was started in memory of his beloved son Henry, who was killed in a freak accident during a Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch on July 19, 2009, and John’s superb photographic memoir, John Surtees, My Incredible Life on Two and Four Wheels, written in collaboration with gifted co-author Mike Nicks, from which all royalties go to the Foundation.

In his last email to us, John recalled his very first solo road race outing at the age of 16 at the newlysurfaced Brands Hatch in 1950.

His machine was a prewar 250cc Triumph that he’d built up himself, and he fell off at Paddock Bend while challenging for a position after it started to rain. Not that he was exactly new to the game, for his first race outing had been in the sidecar of his father Jack’s Vincent when they were disqualified after winning because John was underage.

He learned his craft the hard way, being apprenticed to the VincentHRD factory where, after coming across the prototype Vincent Grey Flash in a corner, it was suggested to Jack that the bike might form the basis of a useful engineering exercise for his son. Beware this latest scam!

Sadly, we live in an age in which those likely to benefit from blurring hard-won truth around the edges call it ‘fake news’, and the activities of those wanting to steal hard-earned money, even life savings, from the accounts of thousands of honest but vulnerable people who don’t really understand tablets, desktops and all the rest of the ever-increasing array of ‘smart’ devices, is explained away by that horribly laddish word ‘scam’ as if it’s just some kind of clever joke or computer game.

Just as we went to press with the last issue, we heard about yet another widespread devious attempt, so be warned that if anything about parking fines, DVLA matters, unpaid speeding penalties or phrases like “we’re concerned about your bank account” appears in your inbox, don’t even open it up, let alone be naïve enough to respond to it. Instead, just delete it straight away.

If you really have been caught speeding, you’ll be sent a good

old-fashioned letter containing full details of what you’re alleged to have done, and the same thing goes if the DVLA needs to contact you about something.

OBM was alerted to the latest fraud when David Davies passed on a communication between members of the Federation of Historic Vehicle Clubs Ltd about a fraud that works like this: you receive an email, ostensibly from the DVLA and with a very plausiblelooking letterhead from that agency,

offering classic vehicle owners a refund if they go to a web link.

That link takes you to a genuinelooking site that essentially leads you through a phishing (another horrible word) process to steal your bank details.

The greatest show on earth With the coming of spring, all eyes are focused on the biggest event of its kind in the world, the Carole Nash International Classic MotorCycle Show that will take place at the Staffordshire County Showground over the weekend of April 22/23.

There, visitors will find row after row of stunning display machines, several halls and outside areas packed with club and trade stands galore and a vast bike jumbler’s paradise of pitches selling everything the dedicated restorer could possibly need.

There’s a brilliant star guest in the shape of triple World Superbike champion Troy Bayliss, the always intriguing Bonhams Spring Sale, the firing up of famous race machines in the Classic Racer GP Paddock, demonstrations of balance and skill on the Classic Dirt Bike Experience trials course, and much more besides.

By courtesy of the Sammy Miller Museum, gracing the stand of leading classic vehicle insurers Footman James will be two of the most exotic British racing machines ever built – a 1949 AJS Porcupine restored at the museum and similar to the one on which Les Graham won that year’s 500cc World Championship, and a supercharged, liquidcooled 1939 AJS V4 that became the first motorcycle to do a 100mph lap in a Grand Prix event – the Ulster GP of 1939. With the FIM’s decision to ban supercharging by the end of 1946, however, this fabulous piece of British engineering was shelved.

In the main hall, where Old Bike Mart publisher Mortons Media Group will have its large stand, the club and private displays of motorcycles will include breathtaking restorations and machines in totally original order – including the gallant 1941 Matchless G3L seen exactly as it finished after Gordon May’s epic 11,500mile overland journey to Vietnam in 2015.

Hundreds of lots of motorcycles, spares and memorabilia will go under the hammer at the legendary Bonhams Stafford Spring Sale on the Sunday, including the 1948 exFreddie Frith world championship-winning 348cc Velocette KTT Mk.VIII that’s estimated to sell for between £120,000 and £150,000.

A 1949 998cc Vincent White Shadow Series C is expected to fetch £50,000 to £60,000, and a 1937 1000cc Matchless Model X is valued at £26,000 to £33,000. A pair of 1917 Douglas motorcycles (£7000-£10,000 and £4000£6000 respectively) are also expected to generate interest.

Among the many special bikes to be auctioned is a rare piece of Norton history in the shape of one of five Model 18Ts that were specially built at the factory in 1945 and sent out to selected dealers for them to use in trials.

Jim Reynolds informs us that GOB 284 went to long-established Norton trials star Jack Williams in Cheltenham, but he preferred his well-developed 350 and handed over the new bike to John Hodgkinson, who worked in Jack’s dealership.

The bikes were based on the 1939 trials mounts with short-wheelbase cradle frames, but when the factory issued each dealer with a set of Roadholder telescopic forks to fit, this gave the machines a longer wheelbase.

Despite this, in 1946 Hodgkinson picked up the 500cc Cup in the Beggars Roost Trial and first-class awards in the Colmore, Victory and Stroud team trials plus awards in other events.

The next part of the bike’s story is something of a mystery, but it was found in 1986 as a plaything in an approved school in Gloucestershire, complete with a sidecar welded to the bike’s frame!

After careful study of the records, and advice from the late Norton trials expert Peter Roydhouse, a long-term restoration began and was finished by the late George Cohen in 2013. New engine internals were fitted where necessary, and the bike has wide-ratio gears, the correct 1945 gearbox end cover, a frame retubed by Chris Williams, a new Amal carburettor, a BTH electronic magneto and stainless steel rims by the Devon Rim Company.

In April last year, George Staples was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, and his ongoing treatment has included a bone marrow transplant. “This has allowed me another chance of life for which I am extremely thankful,” said George, “and I wanted to repay those concerned, hence the two named charities, and having restored various classic bikes in the past, the obvious fundraising choice had to be motorcyclerelated.”

The MV story started at Winfields Outdoor Shoe Superstore in Haslingden where, with the input of a Winfields associate Mr Geoff Holmes, the motorcycle was kindly donated

by Mrs June Winfield as it came from the personal collection of her late husband, Dale Winfield.

Over the winter months George, along with close friend Roy Yearsley, and others, restored the MV to its present sparkling condition. “The list of local businesses, individuals offering their services and donations towards the restoration has been fantastic,” said George, “and I would like to thank everyone concerned. Any other donations for the two charities will be gratefully received.”

Sunbeam Club’s Pioneer Run sees over 300 centenarian machines taking part

T

he Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club has taken lots of trouble lately to point out that, despite its name, it is an allinclusive club for all makes and models, and that anybody with an interest in motorcycles is welcome.

A look down the entry list of the 310 machines registered before the end of 1914 that took part in the 78th running of the prestigious Pioneer Run on Sunday, March 19, is testament to that fact, writes Ian Kerr.

While some entrants are registered as members of other clubs such as the Vintage Motor Cycle Club, and a large contingent of overseas riders belong to their own organisations, the vast majority belong to the organising Sunbeam Club no matter what names are emblazoned on the tanks of their machines.

Unique tome

Many of the marques would warrant just a few lines in a motorcycle encyclopaedia while others, like Triumph (with no fewer than 232 on the register) remain commonplace – even if the new Hinckley models are a far cry from those on the Pioneer Register! This unique and comprehensive tome and library ensures that the 2034 machines listed are of an appropriate age in every respect, and virtually every make that was around at the material time was represented.

While the club runs many other events throughout the year, the Pioneer Run has a worldwide reputation, and for many classic fans it signals the start of the UK riding season, with the owners of many restored classics using it as an appropriate shake-down run out to spectate, as was witnessed this year.

Starting at Epsom Downs, the official route – slightly different from the one used in the first run in 1930 – winds its way through Reigate, Crawley Handcross and Pyecombe before finishing at the Brighton seafront on Maderia Drive.

Nowadays, of course, all the bikes taking part are over 100 years old, unlike the inaugural event when they were just the equivalent of today's ‘classics’ and had much younger riders on board!

Epsom Downs at 6am is not the most hospitable of places, and this year a cold wind greeted riders and the Sunbeam Club officials who had to turn a car park into a safe start area within an hour. Flagged off enthusiastically by the Mayor of

Epsom, who this year turned out to be a retired police traffic inspector, all the riders were away by 9am, albeit for some reason not in the order in which they were listed in the superb souvenir programme.

As a result, some of the faster machines, along with those riders who didn’t see the need to stop at the halfway tea stop and instead took advantage of less congested roads, were heading on to Madeira Drive soon after 10am. Others took a more leisurely approach, but the vast majority were enjoying the Bonhams hospitality on the seafront by midday, swapping stories and recalling those areas where a little light pedal assistance had been needed to climb some of the inclines.

Breakdowns

For a few it was not so straightforward, with several machines suffering mechanical breakdowns and finishing the run on trailers, while others eventually got things going again and finished, even though they were out of time for awards.

All, though, entertained the army of spectators lining the blustery route with cheery waves and ‘aeroplane’ impersonations, and the sun eventually smiled on the Brighton seafront at the conclusion of the event.

Modern machines, mixing with the early ones and taking up braking spaces, are a hazard for those juggling with ignition and air levers and priming manual oil pumps, and all riders must be congratulated in dealing with the heavy Brighton traffic which seems to get worse each year.

However the biggest dangers remain the tender vehicles that continue to sit behind riders causing queues, and worse still those who take chances when overtaking, forgetting about the trailer on the back and cutting in front of other riders and road users.

and their machines varied from splendid restorations to oily rag originals and everything in between when they joined the final seafront gathering, and particular mention should be made of the infamous 1904 Dreadnought that took part in the first ‘official’ Pioneer Run in 1930 and finished this year’s event as well!

While there are a whole tranche of awards to be won, for many the finisher’s medal is sufficient reward, as is the chance to spend time with like-minded enthusiasts.

However their enjoyment is the result of the work of an army of volunteers who make it all happen after a year of meticulous planning by Ian McGill, who has masterminded the event for many years. Now, however, Ian is retiring and handing over the reins to Rob Pond to take the Pioneer Run on towards more birthdays and its centenary.

Open to members of the VMCC, affiliated overseas clubs and the Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club only, the event is for motorcycles and three-wheelers built before 1931, but because of limited space at the museum, only 60 participants can be accepted.

Two optional circular routes will provide enjoyable opportunities for riders of even the earliest machines to experience the quiet, picturesque roads in the Vale of

York, and when the riders return to the air museum they’ll be treated to a roast lunch and receive a memento of the event, all included in the entry fee.

“Not so many folk will be familiar with Eric’s own motorcycling background and pedigree,” said John. “His late father, Bill, was an accomplished trials and scrambles rider who also raced in the Isle of Man TT and was a professional speedway rider for many years, even being selected to represent England on the shale!”

Eric is decidedly modest about his own motorcycling achievements, though. Riding a 500T Norton, he won a first-class award in the 1953 Red Rose Trial, and on a Triumph twin in 1953 and 54 he had two excellent finishes in the Scottish Six Days Trial after riding the bike to the start in Edinburgh from his Lancashire home – a round trip of a mere 352

BCA’s £1.39m bike super sale

The first Motorbike Super Sale of the year at BCA Peterborough in February broke all records for the firm, with the 241 bikes, scooters and quad bikes sold constituting

the highest turnover in such a sale and achieving a turnover of £1.39 million.

The event attracted the biggest entry of motorcycles ever handled by BCA in a

single sale, and strong bidding resulted in a 97.2% conversion rate.

A Harley-Davidson Triglide realised £23,600, and another one £17,500.

LlanBikeFest team back from 1000mile Vietnam trail bike adventure Ten organisers and supporters of the Llangollen Motorcycle Festival recently returned from a 1000-mile trail bike tour of Vietnam, where they helped some of that country’s poorest schools with gifts and cash donations.

Most of the riders (seven from North Wales, two from England and a Canadian) were on Yamaha XTZ 125s – tough little workhorses that they all came to respect – and two others rode Honda CBZ 125 road bikes that coped amazingly well with some pretty rough terrain. There was also a Honda XR 150L, which was a seriously good mount for Vietnam as it had everything to cope with larger Westerners.

“Anything bigger would have been a waste of money given the conditions and speeds,” said LlanBikeFest co-organiser John Hutchinson from Bodelwyddan. “Vietnam definitely

“Trail bikes are rare in Vietnam as the locals do fine with step-throughs, mostly Hondas. We’re all fairly handy trail riders, but on one long climb that we rated between three and four on a scale of five – up on the pegs for a steep, rocky gulley with steps, stones, boulders and sand – we were humbled by meeting a Honda stepthrough coming happily the other way with a family of three aboard!

“Interestingly, Vietnam has banned all two-strokes to tackle pollution, so there are no more Minsks.”

The boarding primary schools that the team visited are in remote mountain areas and provide muchneeded education for some of Vietnam’s 64 ethnic minorities.

Conwy County Councillor and LlanBikeFest exhibitor Andrew Wood, who owns Triumph and Ducati dealership Woods Motorcycles in Abergele, said: “Visiting the schools was one of the highlights of an amazing trip. Vietnam is poor, but the Government is doing everything it can to bring education to everyone with very limited resources. We were glad to do what we could to help.”

John Hutchinson added: “The kids and their teachers were brilliant and incredibly grateful for our support.

Displays, stunts, demonstrations, trade and club stands, not to mention beer, bands and evening entertainment in Llangollen town,

will make it an event not to be missed, and there will also be a charity raffle in aid of Wales Air Ambulance.

Big Bike Sunday riding high after last year's £4800 for charity Since it was first established just a few years ago, the Girder Fork and Classic Motorcycle Club’s Big Bike Sunday at Skipton Auction Mart in Yorkshire (BD23 1UD) has gone from strength to strength, with last year’s event

raising more than £4800 for charity.

Open to all owners of motorcycles and threewheelers, from 50cc mopeds to trikes powered by car engines, and with prizes for various categories as well as best in show, this year’s

event will take place at the same venue on June 25.

Last year more than 100 motorcycles were on show, spanning a manufacturing period of 100 years, and the money raised this year will be split between Manorlands Hospice, the

Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Blood Bikes.

Velo owners organise May Day treat in Kent The Velocette Owners’ Club will be organising its May Day Show in the Village Hall at Ham Street, near Ashford, Kent, from 10am on Monday, May 1.

Visitors are invited to take along their surplus jumble to sell for free, with tables supplied, and both classic and modern motorcycle owners will be welcome to display their machines.

Prize-winning hot and cold food and hot drinks will be available, and all profits will be donated to the Kent Air Ambulance.
