A group of trainee Honda engineers have created 10 replicas of some of Honda’s most iconic motorcycles to demonstrate their ability to overcome diverse challenges.

The Japanese name for the project broadly translates to ‘the art of sculpture’. Buddhists do something similar as part of the training for their younger monks, commissioning them to perform small scale

reproductions of the Buddha, so that they are able to memorise all their traits.

Similarly, Honda asked its trainee engineers to produce reproductions of 10 of the iconic Japanese brand’s most memorable models, using a Delta minibike as a base bike. Because of the differences between frames, wheels and tyre sizes, the designers were forced to virtually start from scratch.

The replica models have been created using the same working methods used to produce a ‘real model’ on a ‘normal’ scale. Starting from a computer design, designers create a clay model of the final design to allow errors to be corrected before creating the final bodywork, paintwork and accessories. Get On scheme reviewed

The Motor Cycle Industry Association is carrying out a review of its Get On biking scheme. MCIA CEO Tony Campbell said: “We are looking at ways of upscaling the Get On proposition across the country with a key objective to make it more widely available.

By doing this we can increase the effectiveness of the initiative.”

Get On was launched initially as a three-year marketing drive by the Motor Cycle Industry Association designed to change the public perception of biking and entice people to try biking or two wheels for the first time while also getting lapsed bikers back into the saddle, ultimately bringing more people into the UK motorcycle world. The campaign still aims to promote the benefits of life on two wheels – such as beating congestion, being more economical and environmentally friendly – while also stressing the fun and freedom of two wheels.

Last year there were 24 Get On events, typically with 40 riders at each. Motorcycle Live had about 800 over the NEC show’s nine days.

Meet the future of speed cameras

It weighs less than a pound, fits into the palm of your hand – and the Met Police are trialling it now. It’s called the TruSpeed SE. Measuring 132 x 114 x 53mm in size, the speed camera is about the same size as a pair of small binoculars. In fact, it looks like a small pair of binoculars too. It works using an inbuilt laser which can pinpoint any vehicle spotted through the eyepiece, from which the speed of the vehicle will be captured, with a reading appearing on the digital viewing screen inside the viewing lens.

Costing around £1650, the TruSpeed SE is currently undergoing trials alongside other speed camera-type devices with the Met Police Force. For use in the field the officers using it will be able to clip a small screen to the bottom of the camera in order to show offenders the speed they have been caught doing on top of the footage of them riding or driving.

Peugeot lifts the Speedfight Cup

Peugeot’s special R-Cup edition of the new generation Speedfight 125 gets a distinctive new paint scheme seen on track in the Peugeot 308 Racing Cup series.

In Icy White, with bright red detail, the Speedfight 125 R-CUP draws on the model’s heritage as the definitive sports scooter. At its heart is Peugeot’s all-new, liquid-cooled ‘SmartMotion’ engine, featuring SYNERJET single-indirect fuel injection and patented ACG [Alternative Current Generator] management. Young drivers not learning to avoid crashes quick enough

A new report by IAM RoadSmart and TRL into crashes involving young drivers has concluded that they need to learn quicker how to avoid crashes with the most vulnerable users – including bike riders – on our roads.

The report found that while they learn much quicker than expected to avoid single vehicle loss of control collisions, they learn a lot slower how to deal with vulnerable road users, be safe on the motorway and safely complete low speed manoeuvres.

Existing research found the following factors led to a higher rate of crashes among younger people: • Inexperience and poor judgement in more difficult driving conditions (poor weather, poor visibility, minor rural roads).

• Inadequate vehicle control (single vehicle accidents, skidding, leaving the road).

• Lifestyle factors (social driving particularly at night and at weekends, when factors such as alcohol and peer pressure affect where and how young people drive).

• Economic factors which result in young drivers being more likely to have cheaper older vehicles which offer them less protection from injury.

The report also found: • Travel behaviour has changed with 17 to 20-year-olds driving less and walking or cycling more.

• Those aged 21-29 travel further than 17 to 20-year-olds each year, with largely employment related journeys.

• The collision rate for drivers aged 17-20 years declined more quickly than the rate for 21 to 29-year-olds between 2002 and 2015.

• Compared with the overall learning

rate, young drivers learn more quickly to avoid single vehicle crashes and loss of control.

• Young drivers also learn more rapidly to avoid contributory factors such as speeding, driving too fast for conditions, swerving and loss of control.

• New drivers also appear to be slow at learning to avoid collisions in certain conflict scenarios in slow manoeuvring situations and with vulnerable road users. This might be indicative of poor hazard perception skills.

The report recommended the following actions: • Further research to understand why novice drivers are involved in and learn quickly to avoid single vehicle loss of control type crashes.

• Consider options for reducing young driver crashes at night.

• Explore the role that advanced hazard perception training might offer in reducing the threat young drivers pose to vulnerable road users.

Sarah Sillars, IAM RoadSmart chief executive officer, said: “It is really useful to learn more about how young drivers are gaining the experience they need to have a safe driving career. However, analysing the results, it’s vital that government, road safety bodies and the driver instruction industry work together to generate new strategies to target those skills that are not being learned at the fastest rate. It also shows that in the formative years of driving, there is clearly a need for post-test training to continue, to build experience that can reduce the number of needless tragedies on our roads.” ▶ Info: www.iamroadsmart.com

Yamaha acquires Brudeli Leanster patent Following the recent announcement of the new Yamaha Niken, Yamaha has got its hands on a patent for another leaning multi-wheeler, the Brudeli Leanster.

The first incarnation of the Brudeli Leanster was unveiled at EICMA way back in 2005, after being built in a

garage by Geir Brudeli and his friends. The innovative three-wheeler showed a great deal of promise, well in advance of other three-wheelers making it to market at that time.

The inventor and owner of Brudeli Tech Holding AS, Geir Brudeli, said:

“I see this as an incredible honour that Yamaha have decided to acquire this technology that we started to develop here in Norway. Knowing the competence, knowledge and passion of Yamaha it will be exciting to see their future products”.

UJET folding smart scooter

Luxembourg-based company Ujet has unveiled an innovative new smart-scooter.

Constructed from an asymmetric frame, the Ujet can be folded easily so you can take it anywhere. Just fold it up and wheel it around – like a suitcase. And its light too, constructed from carbon fibre and light alloy parts. Interestingly, its wheels do not rotate on conventional shafts and bearings, but on external bushings; it has perimeter disc brakes with an internal caliper on hand for braking.

The Ujet comes equipped with the latest communications technology with connectivity options for 3G, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth, meaning that the digital instrument panel can be connected to a mobile device to configure the scooter or diagnose a problem. Plus, it comes with some built-in speakers, and can be used to power up mobile devices (via its Powerbank mode).

Ujet is all set to begin sales in Europe, although the scooters aren’t cheap though – £7000 for the standard model (70km range), or nearer £8000 for a machine that’s capable of 150km on a single charge. ▶ Info: www.ujet.com

Borderless CrossHelmet

The CrossHelmet is a clever lid jammed full of high-tech. The helmet boasts several features including a bifocal heads-up display that shows the rider the view behind them from a rear-facing camera.

The display unit is positioned at the top centre of the helmet’s wide-view visor. The display gives riders better road awareness and also shows riders the weather, navigation, and phone service.

The CrossSound control system lets riders adjust and filter out noise by frequency using the helmet’s corresponding app. The feature is designed to reduce wind noise and engine sounds, which create fatigue and cause permanent hearing damage over extended periods of time. The system allows for group talk capabilities, enabling riders to stay in touch and share their location with others as they travel.

The CrossHelmet first drew spotlight attention with its September 2017 Kickstarter campaign, which raised more than 200% of its original $100,000 fundraising goal. ▶ Info (including a ‘heads up display’ simulation): www.crosshelmet.com

Skully back in business with its updated AR smart helmet

The Skully smart helmet project first launched back in 2013, achieving fame and fortune with its record-breaking crowd-funding project – but three years down the

line Skully folded before making it into full production. Thousands of riders backed the project early, contributing $1500 to get their hands on one of the first smart helmets to feature a built-in rear camera and Head Up Display (HUD) unit. Only a handful of helmets were produced, so many backers were left with lighter pockets.

Now for the good news. Ivan Contreras, CEO of GasGas world-beating trials bikes, has swooped in and snapped up the remnants, rebranding the venture as Skully Technologies and launching an updated version of the original AR-1 helmet, now called the Skully Fenix AR. The ‘new’ Skully Fenix AR helmets feature pretty much all the original tech, including the centrepiece 180º rear-view camera, a small full-time HUD, plus a spread of features including music playback, phone connectivity, navigation and more.

The helmet works closely with your smartphone (via a dedicated app) – though the rear camera and HUD still work by themselves).

The system runs for four hours on a single charge, and is charged using a micro-USB, so recharging using a portable charger on the fly is a simple solution.

Skully Technologies has pledged to “make it right” to initial backers, which means if you paid for a Skully helmet in the original Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, the new Skully team will ensure you get your helmet – despite having no official obligation to do so. It’s a fantastic gesture that will go a long way to repairing the damage done by the old Skully set up.

The price will be just under £1400 for the standard version; there’s also a carbon-fibre model in the works. Units are expected to be available this summer. ▶ Info: www.skullytechnologies.com

1990

● Introduction of CBT (Compulsory Basic Training).

Little has changed since with the exception of the introduction of a two-hour road ride. All licence holders have to undertake a CBT course if they want to ride up to a 125cc machine on the road. Full car licence holders were still able to ride up to a 50cc moped without L-plates and carry a pillion passenger.

1996

● Only UK licence holders are able to take a UK motorcycle test. ● All new CBT certificates are valid for three years from date of issue. ● Retests revised – candidates must wait 10 working days before retaking a bike test.

1997

● CBT becomes compulsory for everyone regardless of when his or her licence was issued. ● Theory Test introduced for all provisional licence holders. ● CBT syllabus altered to include a compulsory two-hour road ride section. Candidates must produce photographic identity when taking their practical motorcycle test and theory test. ● Introduction of five different types of bike licence: Automatic (rider restricted to an automatic only machine). ‘A1’ Light Motorcycle (allowing a rider to ride up to 125cc with no L-plates and with a passenger. Test must be taken on a bike between 75cc and 120cc). ‘A2’ Restricted Licence (allowing a rider to use any machine, regardless of cc, providing that the machine doesn’t produce more than 33bhp. Machines producing more than 33bhp can be restricted the machine with a kit. The restriction stays in place for two years and is then lifted with no need for a further test. The test must be taken on a machine of between 121cc and 125cc with at least 12bhp). ‘A’ Direct Access (allows the rider to use any machine regardless of cc or power output. Rider must be over 21 and the motorcycle must exceed 46.5bhp to take the test).

Accelerated Access (same as the Direct Access Scheme, but the rider already holds another type of bike licence and is upgrading). The test conditions are the same as those for the Direct Access Scheme).

1999

● Introduction of new photocard licences. Both licence parts (paper and card) must be produced for the licence to be valid for the CBT, Theory Test and motorcycle test.

2001

● All new motorcycle test candidates must take a theory test regardless of licence. ● Full car licence holders who passed their car test before February 1 2001 can still carry a pillion and do not have to display L-plates when riding a moped. They also won’t need to take a CBT to ride a moped. ● All new car licence holders must complete a CBT before riding a moped. Those taking a CBT for a moped will have a certificate that lasts for the life of their driving licence. ● Anyone receiving a ban on their licence will also lose their CBT certificate and theory test pass certificate. ● All bike CBT certificates issued from the February 1 will only last for two years. ● The old two years on, one year off restriction for provisional motorcycle licences is abolished. A new provisional motorcycle licence will last for the life of the licence.

2002

● Hazard perception test introduced as part of the motorcycle theory test. Theory test extended by 20 minutes to include this element.

2003

● New questions added to the practical motorcycle test, relating to basic maintenance and precautions to ensure safe riding. A failure to answer both correctly will result in one minor point in the overall test result.

2009

● Introduction of the 2nd European Licence Directive (2DLD) bringing the motorcycle test in line with Europe. ● Test split into two parts to include an off-road section (Module 1) including new manoeuvres. This is followed by the normal road test (Module 2), but without the usual emergency stop and U-turn. ● The test cost was increased to an eye-watering £90.50, and the location of the test centres changed too – only 50 odd fully functioning test centres (down from 200+).

2013

● The 3rd European Licence Directive (3DLD) law change came into effect on January 19, 2013, and includes the following changes: 16+: CBT. 17+: A1 (light motorcycle) licence allowing a full licence up to 125cc.

19+: A2 (restricted) licence allowing a full licence up to 35kw/46.6bhp on any size motorcycle (but not more than 0.2kw/kg or derived from a vehicle more than double its power – 70kw).

24+: A (Direct Access) licence allowing a full licence for any motorcycle.

2014

● Minor changes so that the minimum test vehicle for the A2 Restricted Licence changes so that anything from between 20kw and 35kw and over 395cc is acceptable for test, provided it is not derived from a motorcycle that has more than 70kw as standard. There’s also a restriction on the power to weight ratio of 0.2kw/kg.

DECEMBER 31, 2018

● Proposed changes to the minimum test vehicle for the Direct Access Scheme (DAS) – to take your test the motorcycle must be at least 595cc, 50kw and weigh more than 175kg.

Bike training and CBT changes on the horizon

Between December 2016 and February 2017 the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) and DfT (Department for Transport) began a consultation about changes to motorcycle training.

The results of that initial consultation have just been made public and it would appear that at least 85% of the motorcycle training industry has shown support for improvements to the system.

Some of these proposals will be implemented during 2018 (although there’s no official timescale as such at this point in time). A further consultation will take place in late spring, which will result in further changes at a later date.

Some of the finer details will need to be agreed in further consultations with the DVLA.

Main proposed changes for 2018

* Update the qualification process for motorcycle instructors who would then be able to provide training for all categories of motorcycle under a new assessment scheme. * Changes to the content and structure of the CBT syllabus, which will be aligned more closely with the national standard for riding mopeds and motorcycles. Riders will be required to ‘know and understand’ rather than ‘be taught’ the different elements in the CBT syllabus. The restructured CBT will focus on: • The importance of equipment and safety clothing.

• On-site training.

• Motorcycling theory.

• On-road practical riding skills.

* Strengthening the quality assurance scheme for motorcycle instructors by introducing mandatory quality assurance checks for all approved motorcycle training courses (this includes CBT, DAS and any future progressive access training courses) – not just CBT. * The introduction of a licence upgrade training course – a training option to let riders below the age of 24 ride larger motorcycles by progressive access, without having to take a further practical test. * Restrict learner riders to automatic bikes for CBT training to make sure that riders have the skills they need when riding independently. A further consultation will need to be undertaken on this to see how it will work and to look into how riders who have completed their CBT on an automatic bike can upgrade their licence to manual afterwards. * Revoling CBT certificates – CBT certificates could be revoked if the learner rider gets six penalty points, during the two year validity period of their CBT. This means that they’ll be unable to ride until another CBT course has been successfully completed.

Again, a further consultation needs to be carried out to see how it would work in conjunction with the DVLA. * A digital platform for the CBT admin process.

Move the administration of CBT from its current paper-based system to a digital platform so that that it would be easier to check the expiry of CBT certificates online. * Theory test before or as part of the CBT course to help trainees ride safely on busy roads.

Further consideration of the full impact of introducing the requirement to take a theory test as part of CBT will be necessary and there will be further consultation on this point during the course of this year. * An earned recognition scheme to recognise those ATBs who provide higher standards and facilities, and whose instructors achieve consistently high-quality standards.

Further consultations

As already mentioned in some cases, further consultations will take place in late spring 2018 to clarify some of the above points and establish what effect they might have and how they might work in a greater degree of detail. A weekend in the Scooter World halls Some of you may not realise, but O2W editor Mau is also the founding editor of Classic Scooterist magazine – so on the chilly winter weekend of January 6-7, 2018, he was to be found running the Scooter World halls at the Carole Nash Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic Show, held at Newark Showground. Mau takes up the story…

In 2012, the first annual Carole Nash Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic motorcycle show took place at Newark County Showground in Nottinghamshire. Then in the following year, a new hall was added in order to showcase classic scooters – this hall was included as part of the overall show under the title of Scooter World and was organised by myself as a ‘show within a show’.

Over the years, Scooter World has grown, meaning that other adjoining halls have, over time, been drawn into becoming part of Scooter World.

Fast forward to 2018 and although the name of the Scooter World halls hasn’t changed, the ‘show within a show’ has undergone a major growth spurt and has now become an important semi-independent part of the Winter Classic show, being run by myself and a number of volunteers under the name of ‘Team Scooter World’ who utilise the event to raise funds for the Lincs/Notts Air Ambulance Service and the RNLI – both of which receive no official government funding.

The Team Scooter World stewards themselves comprise of a classic scooter ‘who’s who’ and include a wide selection of famous scooterist ‘faces’ from the past – it goes a long way when something like this is stewarded by scooter celebrities who donate their time freely to give something back to the public – a bit of a reverse psychology on normal show practice.

During the 2018 event, Team Scooter World managed to raise a

Mod Radio kept the atmosphere alive providing music for the whole weekend significant amount of money for their nominated charities by running a charity tombola on both days, which was followed by an impromptu auction of all the remaining unclaimed prizes. At the time of going to press (and including a small donation from team members themselves), the final figure raised on the day amounted to £1000 – although there may be further donations to come after the event.

Blasting in from the past

The Scooter World complex is now made up of four separate halls – although the partitions have been removed in three of them to create one overall atmospheric area. The fourth hall was used as a ‘Pit Area’ for the various racing/sprinting bikes to be displayed with various ‘Blast from the Past’ sessions taking place over both days of the show – and to help contain any noise, the wall partitions were left in place between the adjacent main Retro Area.

Admittedly the Pit hall needs working on for the future, but it served its purpose, because at various points it got very noisy – especially when six bikes started-up together.

Retrospective action

With the extra space afforded by having the four halls this year there was a slightly different approach to the original Scooter World template.

Having these halls allowed for the introduction of the Retro Area, within which there were a variety of stalls selling retro-style products; these were interspersed among a selection of classic motorcycle-related displays which blended in with the scooterrelated stands.

Almost dead centre in all of this was the indoor café with a picnic bench-style seating area which provided a place to ‘chill-out’ while taking-in what was being displayed on the surrounding club stands and trader stalls. Live background music was also provided courtesy of the

Mod Radio music station who were also playing requests for those who asked. And the atmosphere got even better when at various times during both days, Mod Radio streamed worldwide with music and a live video feed from within the halls – interactivity with the internet went through the roof at one point.

By the end of the show weekend, the Retro Area proved to be a resounding success – even motorcycle traders and clubs who’d initially expressed concerns over their positioning in the Retro Area were commenting on how glad they were to have been positioned in this atmospheric and relaxed area.

Time flies by

Although months had been spent in organising this event, it was all over far too quickly. Overall the show’s weekend attendance figures were up on previous years and the event is becoming more and more popular year on year. Can’t wait to see what happens for 2019.

This year will see the introduction of a brandnew one-make race series in the British Scooter Sport Organisation Championship; the Scomadi Cup 200 Challenge.

RetroTech Racing

All race machines are being prepared

by Dave Wilson of RetroTech Racing, and will come with sealed engines with little scope for tuning, which should help deliver close competition across a level playing field. Dave’s job includes fitting a Stage 3 PM Tuning kit, a race spec exhaust, TFI module and variator kit before taking the modified scooter to PM Tuning for final set-up and Dyno. For safety, Dave also fits a lanyard kill switch; so if the rider and scooter part company in a crash, the scooter will stop running. Plus, Dave’s son Tom is looking after the scooter designs, applying custom race graphics to the TL200’s at RetroTech HQ. The heavily-subsidised race package (offering savings of close to two grand) also includes a set of spare panels, headset, plastics, levers, wheels, wet

and dry tyres, and the logbook too – so you can keep the scooter after the end of the season, providing you complete at least three quarters of the championship rounds in 2018.

Dave’s a busy man though – and rustling up 20 Scomadi TL200 racers is just one of many projects he’s working on at the minute. Another project, commissioned by Scomadi’s Frank Sanderson, includes fitting a 275cc Targa Twin Lambretta engine into a modern Scomadi frame. Way back in 2005 Paul Melici of PM Tuning Racing Products and Frank Sanderson of Scooter Innovation joined forces to put their combined 60 years of scooter industry knowledge to good use, with the launch of Scomadi Ltd. At first, they focused their attention on creating a number of modern automatic-engined hybrid conversions, Scooter Innovation style – before rustling up several prototype concept scooters, with the intention to mass manufacture a modern classic. And in 2009, the North-West based brand finally released 10 limited edition hand-built carbon fibre Scomadi Turismo Leggera 250 scooters – which sold out before even being seen in the flesh. Consequently, Scomadi built a further 20 hand-built 300cc scooters, custom painted to customer specification – and once again, they sold out in record time.

In 2013, following 10 years of intense research and development, Scomadi successfully launched its TL50 and TL125 models at EICMA – to wide praise. The first delivery of TL50 production scooters arrived at Scomadi HQ in 2014, with the TL125 following in 2015 and the TL200 in 2016 – though the first 100 were transformed into FP200 Limited Edition scooters, which were all sold prior to arriving in the UK. And for 2017, there’s an abundance of models set to join the range. There’s the TL400, Slimstyle TT200, geared Vitesse 250, and the aforementioned Targa Twin 275 too.
