Met police launch ‘Be Safe’ campaign

Following the recent surge of motorcycle and scooter thefts, the Metropolitan Police is launching a ‘Be Safe’ campaign urging riders to use more security to avoid theft. The campaign supports ‘Operation Venice’, the Met’s response to scooter, motorcycle and moped related crime, which has seen a rise in offences across London (where over 15,000 scooters, motorcycles and mopeds were stolen last year – more than half of all stolen vehicles in the capital).

Bosch Mobility Solutions has revealed its prototype vehicle-tovehicle communication system which they reckon could prevent one-third of all motorcycle accidents.

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) is a relatively new technology allowing vehicles to communicate with each other.

This could be extremely advantageous to motorcyclists, for whom visibility is often an issue. A V2V system on a motorcycle communicating with V2V-equipped cars can send a notification saying something like, “there’s a motorcycle coming round this bend – don’t pull out.” Equally, the system can warn motorcyclists (through an in-helmet headset) of any upcoming hazards.

The new Bosch system is expected to be commercially available in the UK by 2020).

Paris-Casablanca ride reaches half-way point Clémence Couten and Lisa Aleksenko left Paris on May 11, 2017 on a 3000km trip to Casablanca riding Peugeot Django scooters. Weekly sat nav upgrades

TomTom has revealed that the new updates of its global base of maps will now be done weekly – allowing users to access maps four times faster than ever before.

Available for all TomTom customers, the update of the MultiNet-R maps is the largest update so far on TomTom maps. Generally, maps are updated quarterly, but TomTom has gone even further, first with its monthly update and now with weekly updates.

Jonathan's year in Proviz cycle y clothingg It’s been 12 months since myy cycling kit arrived; it consisted of a Proviz P Helmet, waterproof trouserss and gloves. There’d be no reason for me to wax lyrical about the how good something is if it isn’t. This stuff has put up with daily usse on my commute. Wet or dry, hot or cold, it’s performed and protected me without fail.

TRITON HELMET

This has been on and off at leeast four times in a weekday and the padding ddi is still in place; the adjustable chin strap and head ring system isn’t showing signs of slackening through use. The only thing that lost its way was the built-in flashing LED lights (I assume the battery’s gone flat).

CLASSIC CYCLING GLOVES

They’ve kept their fluorescent glow and given the times they’ve been rained on and used in cold weather they’ve given nothing but exemplary service; the padding is still squishy and the grip dots haven’t fallen off.

NIGHRTRIDER TROUSERS

These trousers are more than just waterproof; they’re a great barrier to wind and cold as well. Many times I’ve wore them over my office trousers rather than my lined cycling slacks and they’re still keeping me dry; the seams haven’t split and the adjustable leg length and Velcro fastening is as strong as day one.

I have nothing but praise for all these items – thanks to Proviz for not cutting corners.

I‘ve ridden folding and city pedelecs from other manufacturers who’ve hit the nail on the head, whether they’re limited budget bikes, or ‘open’ wallet; so how would the Juicy fare?

I’m a big wheel mountain bike guy, but the Juicy put my doubts to rest. Simple, no fuss and easy to ride; no over-complicated dashboards, multi adjustable seat and complicated folding handlebar stems here. Front headstock suspension smooths out the road and it comes with a handy back rack. The seat is comfortable and tilts to give easy access to the removable battery unit. There’s five battery options, giving different mileage capabilities (the longer range, the greater the cost) with the standard unit giving an average range of 16 miles (other options are 24, 32, 40 and 48 miles). In an urban environment the basic 16 mile battery is fantastic, but you’ll have no issue taking the Click for a thirty mile ride if you’re not in a rush.

The Click is comfortable and more user friendly than other e-bikes in this price bracket. I’ll admit to putting it in the uppermost assistance level and enjoying the power, more than the opportunity for some assisted exercise. It carried me along at a happy rate of knots; there’s no sudden surge or cut-off in power delivery, apart from when braking, which instantly cuts power. Three different levels of assistance give you all the power you require. The 250w 36v p brushless DC motor happily b pushes you up to a maximum of p 15.5mph.

You also get a twist 1 t hrottle that can push the bike along at 3.8mph or walking a speed.

It easily powers up the s hills (which shouldn’t be a shock h as a Juicy test their e-bikes in the Peak District).

Lambretta launches V-Special scooter range Lambretta has unveiled its new V-Special scooter series which features a semi-monocoque steel frame, steel legshields, interchangeable sidepanels and horncasting, and aluminium parts. The range comprises the V50, V125 and V200 Specials – which are being built with the help of Taiwanese bike manufacturer Sanyang and a former Honda joint partner.

Lambretta GmbH, the Austria-based Lambretta scooter division, said there would be a “limited number of dealers selected for global distribution”.

Lambretta is also working on a 400cc engine scooter, which combines the new V-Special and

I’ve long thought of Mortons the publisher as being at the forefront of building the enthusiasm and knowledge of younger people for our love of two wheels, although I’m writing as one who has been riding for decades. This time period includes when many younger people were involved (something lost of late with the promotion of large and expensive machines more-or-less exclusively). This and the creation of a ‘biker’ image in the eyes of the public too, linked only to expensive leathers and helmets, lots of noise, searing performance and dramatic accidents!

Hardly the stuff to entice parents to stop them buying their offspring a ‘nice little car!’ O2W is

a unique initiative, for which we enthusiasts who love our bikes owe a tremendous debt and will continue to so do.

Something different!

I went to get my bike MOT’d and found your publication. There’s so much press for big expensive bikes it’s refreshing to find something different. I’ve been riding since 1972 with a few breaks for work and family etc. I’ve had bikes made in France, Austria, Italy, Czech Republic, India, and of course, some from Japan (has anyone out there got one a bargain Yamaha 125 they’d like to write about)? I’ve ridden

many miles on 125s and they’ve served me well (the last one I overloaded with a tight-ish chain – still awaiting repair).

Bargain-basement fake Shoei GT-Air helmets are doing the rounds online.

The lids are being sold below market value at around £80 – but the offending helmets are visually convincing Chinese-made fakes.

Lab tests have revealed they are poorly constructed, made of low quality materials, and have been pronounced dangerous.

If you spot a suspiciously cheap Shoei lid from anywhere other than an official distributor – we’d suggest giving it a miss (or contact Trading Standards on 01384 413841).

Honda to launch electric scooter in 2018 Honda says it will launch its first electric scooter in 2018. We don’t know much at the moment, but Honda is focusing on commuting convenience and is currently working on R&D for an easily detachable battery pack to help extend range, allowing the battery to be swapped easily, rather than the rider having to wait while the battery charges.

I recently bought a KTM Duke 390 to commute to work on (it’s waaaay cheaper and more fun than the train)! I was rolling home when I had to stop in a queue due to an accident.

The police were on the scene and I figured I’d be stuck and stationary for a minute or two.

As I wanted to let my girlfriend know I was on my way home I got my phone out and sent her a text.

At this point I saw the copper come running towards me with a big angry red head. He went mad and said using mobile phones kills people. I stressed I was stationary and in neutral but he was having none of it and I got a ticket for using a mobile phone while on my bike. Can I defend this as I wasn't actually moving forward and sat still?

It’s been quite a few years since I’ve had a big red angry policeman shout at me (and to be fair I was young and being a dipstick). Always scary… but I digress. As for your scenario, on your own evidence you have no defence. While you were not ‘moving forward’ from what you've said, you were ‘riding’ your motorbike i.e. you were in a queue of traffic with the engine running etc.

As you did this while using a ‘hand-held mobile telephone’ as defined in the applicable regulations, you have broken the law. Using a mobile phone will mean six penalty points on your licence and a fine. It may sound harsh in your scenario, but parliament’s intention is clear – to come down hard on those using phones while driving/riding.

O2W’s top tips for commuting It’s sometimes easy to forget the basics when you’ve got so many things whirling round your head and you’re about to set off somewhere and the smallest thing can affect your routine and throw your train of thought. We’ve asked around the office to see what our best tips are for commuting…

Know your way

Make sure you know your route or take a sat nav. We all know the phrase ‘You never get lost on a bike, you just extend your ride’. But your boss might not see it that way if you miss your morning meeting.

Check the weather

Be prepared. There’s nothing worse than sitting in the office and watching the rain pour down outside knowing that you’ve only got your summer gloves and jacket. Plus we’ve picked our favourite weather apps in this issue so you shouldn’t be caught out again!

Take advantage of your size

On a scooter or a bike you’re much smaller than cars and as a result can filter and nip between traffic (all in a safe and responsible manner of course) so make the most of it and filter!

Factor-in a fill-up

Don’t forget that filling-up for fuel may take a little longer than you expect; make sure you factor in the time on your journey.

Take a break

Depending on how long your journey is, why not factor-in a break to keep yourself fresh for when you arrive? It doesn’t have to be a long break, just perhaps a sit down at a service station or have a quick stretch in a layby.

In the wake of ‘Ride to Work’ week (which took place from June 19-25, 2017) we thought we’d outline some of the benefits of taking to two wheels for your daily journey to work.

Steve Kenward at the Motorcycle Industry Association, which organises the annual week-long event, said: “There are obviously huge personal benefits to swapping to a motorcycle or scooter for your commute, especially in terms of saving time and money, but there are benefits for all road users too.

A European study carried out by Transport and Mobility Leuven, which focused on one of the most congested routes in Belgium, found that if just 10% of motorists swapped to a motorcycle, scooter or moped, then congestion would reduce by 40% for all road users – and if 25% of drivers swapped, congestion would be eliminated altogether. Just

imagine how much less congested our roads would be if more people swapped to two wheels?

Steve Kenward at Motorcycle Industry Association, said: “There are five good reasons to commute via motorcycle or scooter and some or all will apply to most people: You’ll save time, you’ll save money, motorcycles and scooters are easier to park, you’ll become a more skilled driver and will understand how vulnerable road users move on the road, and the best reason of all – it’s just more fun!”

Shoei’s RYD lid is well-equipped with many features often found on more expensive Shoei lids. It boasts a compact, aerodynamic shell design, coupled with aggressive, street-fighter inspired styling. It has exceptional airflow and the visor remains resilient to fogging. There are multiple vents and extractors, including a chin vent, brow area inlets and rear outlet vents.

The RYD is anything but ‘entry level’ with its quick-release, anti-fog visor and mounting set-up. It features a removable liner, detachable/washable centre pad, cheek pads, chin strap cover and noise reducing ear pods. It comes with a race-spec Double-D ring and emergency quick release system, allowing emergency medical personnel to safely remove the cheek pads from an injured rider’s helmet, so it can be gently removed with minimal load placed on the rider’s neck.

Aimed at younger riders, and streetfighter/naked bike owner, it’s also spot-on for anyone wanting a ‘reasonably’ priced, well-equipped touring helmet.

The M100 jacket is made out of a fabric called T-55; the lining is claimed to be waterproof, although I didn’t have the chance to check that out while I was wearing it. However, the removab ble quilted lining did prove to be warm and toasty during my 50-m mile trip, which took place over the course of a cool spring evening.

CE armour is fitted as standard to the shoulders and elbow, although a back protector isn’t (however, there’s a fitting pouch h for you to provide your own).

The jacket has air intake vents to the chest area, plus an exhaust vent between the shoulder blades (for when extra ventilation iss needed). Other features include: adjustable straps to the waist,, sleeves and elbows; two outer jacket pockets (plus another onee and a phone pocket on the removable liner); and there’s also various reflective detailing.

M107 waterproof jeans RRP: £39.99 | Colour: Black | Sizes: M to 4XL O2W rating: ★★★★★★★★★★ The M107 trousers are made of the same T-55 fabric used in the M100 tour jacket. Like the jacket, they come with a quilted lining (fixed in this case); CE armour is fitted as standard to the knee area. The seat area is reinforced to provide extra comfort and protection. Other features include an adjustable waist and ankle zip gussets; like the jacket, it also comes with some reflective detailing.

Both items reviewed can be perceived as being a matching outfit, but there are other options within the Trik Moto range – easy to ‘mix ‘n’ match these to suit personal taste. In use, both my chosen options

fitted well and were comfortable with little or no restrictions encountered in the limb areas. And during my ride I never felt that I was compromised by the wind chill factor, remaining reasonably warm and comfy all the time.

A visual examination of their structure certainly leaves an impression of a couple of well-constructed products given they are budget items. Would I consider buying them if I were a new rider getting on the road for the first time and had all the other cost options to consider as well? Certainly I would.

Review Cobrra Nemo 2 chain oiler Price: £99.99 Reviewer: Beth Williams

The Nemo 2 differs from other chain oilers in the way it works.

Most chain oilers are gravity fed, (the oil sits in a reservoir, then drips onto the chain), or vacuum driven (the engine controls the flow via a small pipe from the intake manifold).

It lubricates well, but can make a mess if left with oil in when the bike’s parked-up. Cobrra has combated this in a simple but effective way – the reservoir has a twist action mechanism allowing the oil to drip intermittently when required, and can be turned off again when not needed. So, when needed, give the Nemo 2 a quick twist and leave it to it. After a while, turn it back and the oil won’t be released. This prevents messy, oily patches when parked-up (and saves money on wasted oil).

This chain is certainly in need of attention Fitting was relatively easy. It took a couple of adjustments after being used on the road, but once it was sat right, it was brilliant! The chain was a little worse for wear and this oiler brought it right back to life. Even when used on a biking holiday in the Outer Hebrides and cross country to a dusty bike rally, it was faultless – definitely my favourite bike gadget. It never skipped a beat and as long as you keep it topped up, it’s brilliant.

It left minimal mess when parked, with only a couple of drips before the flow stopped, and did not negatively affect the aesthetics of the bike (the clip and pipe are almost totally hidden and the reservoir sits neatly on the handlebars, drawing compliments as to how stylish and well-made it looked.

Make sure you keep the reservoir topped-up Negatives are minimal; it was a bit of a faff to fit (although this partly came down to it being used on a fully faired Sports bike). Used on a naked bike, I imagine it would be a lot simpler.

Because it’s a universal chain oiler, the instructions are fairly vague about exact placement and positioning, so some trial and error is involved, but it’s well worth it once it is on properly.

The Nemo 2 is an absolutely fantastic bit of kit, and well worth the money.

Module 1 motorcycle test

Thinking about getting yourself onto two wheels? This four part step-by-step guide will cover compulsory basic training, the motorcycle theory test, plus Module 1 and Module 2 of the (full) motorcycle test.

Alright? My name’s Ross and I’m the staff writer for On2Wheels. I’ve been riding a used 2007 Yamaha XT125 on a CBT for the past 18 months and have just passed my full motorcycle test – so I have a pretty good idea of just how daunting a looming test date can be. I wanted to try and break down the process, share some of my thoughts and experiences and hopefully ease some worries while I’m at it. In the last issue we looked at the motorcycle theory test, this time we’re looking at the Module 1 of the practical motorcycle test.

Module 1 motorcycle test

The Module 1 motorcycle test is simply an exercise in bike control – the examiner will instruct you to complete a number of slow and high speed manoeuvres around a selection of cones (in a closed, off-road environment).

It might look pretty complicated, but don’t panic, broken down to its individual elements it’s all relatively straightforward.

The Module 1 test is made up of nine individual elements – and typically takes around 20 minutes (though I was actually done and back in the examiners office within 10). Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll be getting up to: ■ Wheeling the motorcycle ■ Using the stand ■ Riding a slalom ■ Riding a figure of 8 ■ A slow ride ■ A U-turn ■ Cornering and a controlled stop ■ Cornering and an emergency stop ■ Cornering and hazard avoidance It’s worth noting that for the hazard avoidance and emergency stop exercises you must ride at a minimum speed of 19mph on a moped and 31mph on a motorcycle. The examiner will be looking out for dangerous faults (these involve actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property), serious faults (these are potentially dangerous), riding faults (these aren’t potentially dangerous, but could become serious if you keep making the same mistake). You’ll pass Module 1 if you make no serious or dangerous faults and no more than five riding faults.

Be sure to visit O2W.co.uk to check out a video of Ross’ training with WOLTS If you remember that the test is simply about showing that you have full control over the motorcycle, while constantly assessing your environment for risks, then you should be fine.

If you’ve already been out on the road regularly (riding on a CBT certificate), you should already be pretty well equipped to deal with the Module 1 test – but no matter your level of experience, make sure you put in the practice and get some proper training in before taking your test (to ensure any bad habits are picked up and worked on in time for your test).

If you pass the examiner will tell you what faults you made (if any) and give you a pass certificate which you’ll need to take with you to your Module 2 test. If you don’t pass, you’ll have to book another Module 1 test and try again.

Some things to note:

■ It’s a good idea to swing by the test centre and watch a few other people taking their module one bike tests.

You can learn a surprising amount by simply observing what others do and why they pass and fail.

■ Make sure you’re kitted out with the appropriate safety gear. Although you are not officially being graded on what you are wearing, you need to ensure your gear meets your examiner's expectations.

■ Make sure you’ve got your UK photo card driving licence, theory test pass certificate and your Compulsory basic training (CBT) certificate (unless you are taking the test to upgrade your full motorcycle licence).

■ You’ll find out whether you’ve passed on the day.

At the smaller capacity end of the market, £2500 can get a lot of motorcycle (or scooter) for your money, but once you move on to A2 licence machines, things become a little trickier on a budget.

The likelihood of you finding a new bike the money is pretty slim, so you might have to look for a used machine to call your own. As a consequence, here’s a little breakdown of what to watch out for when buying used – whether you’re visiting a dealer or you’ve spotted an ad online.

Buying second-hand

People always tell you to have a good look around the bike before you actually go and buy it, but what do they mean? And what exactly should you be looking for? Here are a few things to watch out for when you’re checking out a used machine.

Have a look

First off, does the bike look as it should? Is it missing anything notable? How are the tyres? Are they the correct sizes with plenty of tread and not squared-off?

Are the chain and sprockets properly adjusted, with plenty of life left? Does the suspension still have its damping? How do the brakes look?

Do the pads still have plenty of wear on them?

Does the mileage line up with the MOT certificates? How many keys are there? Do the locks look butchered?

Is the downpipe out of the engine in good nick? Are the bolts rusty and seized? Is it an original or aftermarket end can – and if so, is it legal?

Does the seller’s address match the logbook? Does the service history make sense – and does the paperwork match the story? Is it MOT’d? If not, just how roadworthy is it?

Start it up

Does it start easily from cold? Is the exhaust blowing at the engine manifold? Is it idling at the right speed? Does that rumbling go away

when you pull the clutch in? If so, it’s nothing to worry about.

Test ride

Does it go into gear easily and does the clutch release smoothly? Does the engine make power smoothly?

Is there any hesitation when you open the throttle? How slick is the gear-change?

Does it accelerate cleanly away from a stop and through the gears? How does the steering feel – is it nice and smooth or notchy?

Are there any clunks from the front brake? Does the brake lever pulse?

But before you go, decide your absolute maximum and stick to it – and remember to leave yourself enough money to kit yourself out with a helmet, jacket and gloves too. While you’re researching the kind of machine you’re after; it’s also worth checking out how much the insurance is going to cost too.

Ultimately, if the price isn’t right, there’s another bike or scooter out there with your name on it – you just need to find it. grip on the bars? It shouldn’t be wobbling excessively, or veering off to the left or right…

Established in Italy in 1911, Benelli is arguably one of the oldest European motorcycle brands; it would be fair to say that it’s had its ups and downs since then, having passed through several owners’ hands.

If looks could kill, I’d be dead right now because there’s nothing I dislike about its appearance. The TNT 125 shares some of its components with other motorcycles within the Benelli family tree, like the instrument panel, comprising of a large rev counter and additional digital display, which provides more than enough information about what’s going on.

Neco Alexone 125

Neco has recently introduced a new budget-priced maxi scooter to the UK market, but in a tough market sector, how will it fare against the competition?

While many manufacturers are struggling to get their latest Euro 4 compliant bikes to the UK market, Neco recently sneaked-in the Neco Alexone (pronounced Alexo-ne), a budget-priced maxi scooter with its eye on the bike commuter market – and at a very competitive £2179 (plus OTR charges) to boot. And at this end of the price point bracket that will certainly give other contenders something to be worried about.

In the scheme of maxi scooter looks and styling, the Alexone is pleasing to the eye with its sharp-angled styling, modern LED lights and a well laid-out digital dash, which may not have many of the trick features found on higher end scooters, but the basic info is there, including clock, rev counter, trip odometer, etc. There’s also a battery charge/condition meter.

Another unusual design feature is the totally black tinted front screen.

As a new Euro 4 compliant scooter, it comes with all required typeapproval features including an enginemeeting the latest Euro 4 regulations and a combined braking system; it also has a handbrake (normally only found on larger capacity maxis) which was useful when parking on a slope. It also has a massive 14 litre fuel tank, offering more than enough range capabilities.

The rear suspension setting felt a little harsh and given more time I'd have used the adjuster to soften it off. The final issue (if I could call it one) was that solid black screen, which blocked the view area directly in front of the leading wheel. Maybe it just takes getting used to, but it was something I’d never really experienced on a scooter before.

Featherweight

On the road

Immediately noticeable about the Alexone was how light and manoeuvrable it feels. Unloading it on arrival, it was easy to push around and to get it on the centrestand – one slight niggle though; as well as being electric-start, it also comes with a kick-start, which you can catch your foot on it when putting the scooter on the centrestand.

Riding away, all the controls fell easily to hand and felt they were exactly where they were meant to be. The cleverly designed digital dash was easy to read and provided ample information. I did have some issues with the scooter though. Firstly the seat contour made me feel I was sitting too far forward to ride in the

On the proven and reliable engine that we’ve straight and narrow everything reviewed in different bikes many behaved well with the combined times before, so its performance holds braking system providing more than no real surprises. Neco claims 100kph the necessary stopping power when

needed (not that I had any emergency braking situations to deal with).

To buy or not to buy?

The Neco Alexone 125 is light, manoeuvrable and handles well; it also gives the rider confidence in its handling abilities. It’s available at Neco UK dealerships now, coming with a two year warranty and in three colourways (Black, White or Grey). If I was in the market for a commuter scooter at this price point, it would definitely be on my short list.

With the same engine as the Yamaha WR125 coupled with a Keihin Carb, Marzocchi 40mm shocks, wavy disc brakes and an exhaust note that will bring a smile to your face every time you open the throttle up – the Rieju Marathon Pro SM highlights back-to-basics riding at its best.

At a glance

The classic Supermoto styling coupled with big forks, big brakes and the aluminium swingarm make the MRT 125 look like a larger capacity machine. My test bike also had the racing sticker pack, adding to its modern, sporty appearance – while the gold forks contrasting the white plastic fenders look really cool.

The bike is well equipped, with some good tech as standard – and when compared to the slightly more expensive Yamaha, it’s only really missing a full digital dash and a side stand; but these can be easily overlooked.

Starting up

With a turn of the key and a press of the starter button the engine comes into life. At first a little choke will help

the engine idle better due to the carb which replaces the fuel injection found on Yamaha models, but once warm you get a nice deep tone from the stock exhaust –don’t worry, it’s not loud enough to wake the neighbours.

The digital display shows the basic info like speed, oil warning light, temp warning light and indicator symbols. Sadly there’s no rev counter or fuel gauge, so keep an eye on your tank as it’s a pretty thirsty bike for a 125, I owe my thanks to the reserve tank after I was nearly caught out 10 miles from the nearest fuel station.

On the road

All six gears can be used to your full advantage; unlike other 125s sixth is geared for the maximum speed and the odd gust of wind won’t make you need to knock it down a gear to build your speed up again. Get tucked in and you’ll be able to reach around 73mph. At slower speeds with half throttle the bike is almost silent, but open it up and you’ll be sure to smile as the bike roars into life.

Brakes are a little spongy at first until warmed up, with the rear brake being more intense than the front causing you to surge forward until

you use it. Suspension-wise, the ride is very soft and a little too bouncy for road use on the standard setup, but great for potholes or light green lane runs. The seat is very firm and after 10-15 miles it starts to get slightly uncomfortable – but this isn’t a bike aimed directly at commuters, so I put this to the back of my mind and focused on its impressive performance instead. Despite the mild discomfort, I still enjoyed every moment of riding the bike; it’s light and nimble enough to really throw into the corners with enough power to make decent progress, irrespective of any hills or headwinds.

Overall

Nearly £4000 is a lot of money for what’s essentially a basic 125 – but it’s

important to remember it’s cheaper than a Yamaha equivalent, plus you can choose from loads of custom colours and decals at no extra charge.

If you are looking for something that can offer plenty of fun and freedom and is a little different to your standard 125 machine (encouraging you to shift weight as you throw the bike into corners, taking advantage of the impressive grip on offer from the Supermoto tyres) then the Rieju MRT 125 SM could be the bike for you.

Its looks, its sounds and its overall build quality make this bike an all-round winner in my eyes – and because it’s so simple, there’s surely less to go wrong.

KYMCO VSR 125i

KYMCO’s brand-new 125cc Euro 4 naked motorcycle has arrived in the UK – and we’ve been down to their HQ near Shrewsbury to try the Taiwanese bike out for size.

In principle, the new VSR 125i CBS is just an updated version of KYMCO’s best-selling CK1 125 naked sports bike – and looks-wise it has inherited much of its predecessor’s sharp street styling. But, it’s underneath that tried and tested aesthetic where all the major changes have been made – as KYMCO has worked hard to bring the VSR 125i into line with new Euro 4 legislation.

Overview

It’s powered by KYMCO’s four-stroke air-cooled OHC 125cc fuel-injected engine – which is capable of getting you up to speeds of around 65mph.

It offers 7.5kW of power at 8000rpm and 10Nm of torque at 7000rpm. Of course, it’s a 125cc machine, so it’s never going to be the punchiest bike on the market, but it was more than capable of keeping up with traffic on the rural A-road we attacked on our test ride, and it LICENCE was at ease tootling around town.

For such a reasonably priced bike, the chassis is actually quite impressive – and the steel tubular structure frame offers a slimline base for the learner-friendly machine too.

The five-speed gearbox is relatively smooth, helped along by the wet multi-disc clutch. It’s got 17in front and rear wheels, and its front telescopic hydraulic forks and adjustable hydraulic dampers are more than capable too, making the machine perfect for whizzing around town – and confident enough out on pothole-laden A-roads.

A combined braking system has been introduced (welcome news for learner riders). As you’d expect, it works by linking the front and rear disc brakes – offering progressive, balanced and safe braking. And

under duress, I was surprised with how well they performed, as they brought me to a halt quickly from speed. It weighs-in at 128kg with the weight distributed really evenly across the bike – while the seat height is a learner-friendly 780mm (and should make it within the bounds of the shorter riders out there).

Notably, KYMCO claims that the VSR is also impressively cheap to run, making it one of the most affordable 125 commuters on the market. The company reckons that it can achieve well in excess of 100mpg – meaning that around £10 worth of fuel should allow you to cover 160 miles.

Bells and whistles

On the equipment front, the VSR 125i has a rev counter and digital display, electric start, steering lock, side and centrestands, tool kit and rear grab rails. It’s available in three colours – Matt Blue, Flame Orange and Bright Green Metallic. KYMCO also offers subsidised insurance and finance – plus a two-year manufacturer’s unlimited mileage parts and labour warranty.

Summing-up

In short, the KYMCO VSR 125i takes over from where the CK1 left off –

bridging the gap between pricey Japanese and European machines, and cheaper models from unknown manufacturers. The VSR 125i CBS offers riders a well-equipped machine from a globally trusted manufacturer with a wide reaching UK support network. And of course, as a 125cc motorcycle, you can ride the VSR 125i on L-plates – but it’s not just a stylish proposition for learners; it’s also a very affordable one for more experienced riders too.

If you’re in the market looking to buy a stylish, economical and reliable ride for your daily commute to and from work, then I’d encourage you to think about giving KYMCO’s new fuel-injected VSR 125i Naked Sports motorcycle a test ride.
