Cycling legend Cavendish considers switch over to motorcycle racing In an interview with Esquire Middle East magazine, British cycling legend Mark Cavendish said that he’d love to race bikes with engines, not pedals.

It’s well reported that Cavendish is a big fan of motorsport and as a close friend of British MotoGP rider Cal Crutchlow, he’s well aware of what it takes to ride at the highest level of motorcycle racing.

When asked how he feels about four-wheels, he said: “I prefer motorbikes more; I would like to race them instead.”

Cavendish told the magazine that he owns a couple of bikes (with engines) and when asked if he’ll make the move to motorcycles, he said: “In all seriousness, I think so.”

Britain’s roads policing chief, Anthony Bangham insists police will not be targeting drivers travelling at just one mph over the speed limit.

Chief Constable Bangham recently called for an end to the 10% ‘buffer’ for going over the speed limit and he also said that speeding awareness courses were being used too widely instead of penalty points and fines.

The West Mercia chief said in a speech at a recent Police Federation Roads Policing Conference: “Let’s change the message – we are proud to be law enforcers. I do not want the public to be surprised; I want them to be embarrassed when they get caught. They need to understand the law is set at the limit for a reason.

They should not come whinging to us about getting caught if booked at 35 or 34 or 33 (in a 30mph zone); that cannot be unfair because they are breaking the law.”

Current guidance suggests police forces should only issue penalties for drivers caught at 10% plus 2mph over

the limit (35mph in a 30mph zone, for example). But Tory MP Sir Greg Knight warned against an “overly aggressive policy against drivers,” saying: “It will make criminals of motorists who are basically good road users, trying to obey the speed limit, while keeping an eye on the road.”

After his speech, Mr Bangham wrote on the National Police Chiefs’ Council blog: “Comments I made last week have led to a perception that the police are going to be pursuing and prosecuting drivers going just one mph over the speed limit. That is not the case and was never advocated – and I need to clear up the misunderstanding.”

Statistics show 1710 people were killed on the roads in the year to June 2017 and last year only about half of the UK’s fixed speed cameras were switched on. Data released by 36 of the 45 UK police forces revealed four have no fixed speed cameras at all and 13 have fewer than half actively catching speeding drivers.

Fighting bike crime in the capital Representatives from the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) met with London Mayor Sadiq Khan recently to discuss how the motorcycle industry can continue to play its part in fighting the theft of powered two-wheelers in the capital.

They were joined by senior leaders from major motorcycle and scooter manufacturers to explain what has been done so far by the industry and what plans are in development. It was also an opportunity to explain what actions the Mayor’s Office needs to take to ensure the success of promoting a ‘layered’ approach to security.

This solution is being supported by both industry and the Met Police in its ‘Be Safe’ campaign.

MCIA CEO Tony Campbell said: “This was a good opportunity to demonstrate how seriously manufacturers are taking this problem and to update the Mayor on some of the initiatives he may not have been fully aware of.

“We know the mayor would like to hear there is a ‘magic bullet’ which can be fitted to all bikes to stop them from being stolen, but unfortunately there isn’t. Powered two wheelers are a solution in reducing congestion in the capital, improve air quality and relieve the pressure on parking, as they do in other European cities.

“They need to be properly factored into London’s transport planning over the long term and secure parking is one of the elements to ensure this is successful.”

Big increase in new drivers banned for using mobile phones at wheel The number of new drivers banned for using a mobile phone at the wheel has sky-rocketed since new laws were introduced in March 2017.

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that almost 11,000 new drivers lost their licence in 2017 – and the number of new car drivers who lost their licence for phone use rocketed by 356%.

Following the new laws, which mean drivers are handed six penalty points and a £200 fine for using their phone while driving, some 533 new drivers lost their licence for breaching the rule – up from 117 the year before. The number of new motorists banned for driving without due care and attention (another charge used by police for mobile phone use at the wheel) was also up to 447 last year, compared with 401 in 2016.

AA President Edmund King said: “Part of the rise in new drivers losing their licence is due to the one-strikeand-you’re-out increase to six penalty points for using a phone at the wheel that came in last March.

“We know from our own research that young drivers in particular say they can’t bring themselves to turn their mobile phones off before driving. This dangerous attitude is starting to catch-up with them.”

A spokesman for the National Police Chiefs’ Council said: “The evidence shows that young drivers present the greatest risk to themselves and others. We continue to enforce the law with full use of all the approved methods of prosecution available to us. Our message is clear: Keep to the law or risk losing your licence.”

The most expensive motorcycle ever sold at auction!

This 1951 Vincent Black Lightning sold to the sound of cheers and applause in a packed ballroom at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas recently.

Bonhams – led by auctioneer Malcolm Barber – sold the rare, original condition, British-made, Australian speed record-setting motorcycle for £658,019.99 ($929,000), making it the most valuable ever sold at auction.

Built by special order and imported new into Australia

by Tony McAlpine, the Vincent Black Lightning (number 7305) is one of only around 30 Black Lightning models ever built by the Stevenage factory. At the time of its build, another well-known Vincent, nicknamed ‘Gunga Din’, was undergoing work in the factory. Upon completion of both, the two machines competed at an airfield where it was said that McAlpine’s bike was a clear 30 yards ahead of ‘Gunga Din’ and factory records later indicated speeds in excess of 130mph in third gear.

NORTHANTS TO OPEN UP BUS LANES

Bus lanes in Northamptonshire will be made available to motorcycle and scooter riders later this year as part of a county-wide initiative to convert car drivers to PTW use in a bid to cut congestion and emissions and ease parking problems.

The initiative will also include lobbying for radio airtime in the county to spread the word about the benefits of PTW use, a Facebook and poster campaign to drive home the message and free test rides at training schools. Bikers are also to be encouraged to tell friends and family about the benefits and joys of riding on two wheels.

The push to promote motorcycling in the region came at a second meeting of the Motorcycle Northants campaign at the Park Inn hotel in Northampton on Wednesday, January 31. Attending the meeting were members of the Motorcycle Industry Association, headed by new CEO Tony Campbell; Northamptonshire County Council and its Highways

Agency; bike training school owners and local dealers.

The meeting was chaired by Ian Cooper of Cooperb Motorcycles of Easton Maudit, Northamptonshire, who last year founded Northants Motorcycle Trade to rally dealers and distributors in the county to the cause. His son Jack is collating the Facebook side of the campaign. Mr Cooper commissioned motorcycle

artist Stephen Hill to design a poster series to promote the campaign that is particularly aimed at reducing single-occupant car use.

The steps that are being taken to foster motorcycling in Northamptonshire are being monitored by other counties.

Let’s hope they follow the enlightened lead being set by the Motorcycle Northants project.

existing Australian speed record when Jack Ehret achieved an average speed of 141.5mph. Under the ownership of Ehret, the Black Lightning would also clinch numerous race victories throughout Australia and become renowned around the globe.

“Rollie Free and Marty Dickerson (both legends in the Vincent universe) knew of this motorcycle and Ehret’s acclaim,” said Ben Walker, Bonhams’ Head of Motorcycling.

“After the ‘Bathing Suit Bike’ ridden by Free, the Ehret bike is likely to be the most important Black Lightning in existence and is one of the world’s most desirable machines,” he said.

In its original, unrestored and running condition (it was recommissioned by none other than Vincent master Patrick Godet), this tremendously important and rare Black Lightning motorcycle was in Ehret’s ownership for nearly 50 years.

Fall in police officer numbers blamed for speeding fine cancellations

Police across the UK have been forced to scrap one-in-10 speeding fines issued in a 12-month period – and in some cases, forces have scrapped more than a quarter of the fines handed out to drivers.

Analysis by Dr Adam Snow, a lecturer in criminology at Liverpool Hope University, shows that more than a tenth of the 2.2 million speeding offences recorded in England and Wales in 2016-17 were cancelled, equating to around 241,165 scrapped fines.

Officers in Greater Manchester had to withdraw 33,893 (28%) offences – the largest of any police force in the country – according to Home Office statistics.

There are a number of reasons motorists are escaping fines.

Drivers disputing their penalty saw a significant number get off, while administration delays meant fines issued more than 14 days after the incident in question had to be dropped. Cases were also cancelled due to simple police errors regarding the time, nature and location of offences, or due to technical issues with the speed camera equipment.

Widespread cuts, in-line with the Conservative government’s austerity agenda, have ravaged forces nationwide and officers can’t be in more than one place at a time.

Britain’s most senior police officer, Met Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe recently criticised the Government’s austerity programme for forcing a cut in police numbers at a time when more officers are needed.

Speaking during a radio interview, Hogan-Howe said: “The bottom line

is there will be less cops. There’s only so much you can cut and make efficiencies and then you’ve got to have less police, and I’m not sure that’s wise in this city.”

Asked to identify the biggest challenges facing his successor, Hogan-Howe said the first would be “money”, adding “You need cops; you can’t throw laptops at crowds; you’ve got to deal with the situations face-to-face, so that’s going to be a real challenge.”

Hogan-Howe has become increasingly vocal about the squeeze on police resources as he nears retirement. Last month he said “warning lights are flashing” after official figures confirmed a rise in murder and knife crime in the capital. His feelings are matched by David Thompson, Chief Constable of the West Midlands Police, who said: “There’s 2200 less police officers here in the West Midlands, since 2010. It’s a big reduction and I’m not surprised some of our visibility feels a bit lower in communities.” He added that he was having to “look more carefully” at the use of resources in criminal investigations, as the force works hard to live within its means amid an overhaul of its workings (dubbed WMP2020) to create a more efficient organisation.

Top tips to prevent motorcycle theft Home Office figures predict that 30,000 motorbikes will be reported stolen this year – with only around 12,000 recovered.

Protecting your motorcycle or scooter against theft is increasingly vital, so to help you, automotive finance company Moneybarn has detailed some useful steps to help put off potential thieves.

Cover the basics

Most bike thefts occur when the ignition is shut off, but not locked. It might seem obvious, but make sure you always lock your ignition and remove the key. One of the simplest methods of preventing theft is to not broadcast the value you’ve left sitting on the street by using a cover. Not only is a cover a time-consuming obstacle for thieves, they often ‘shop’ for particular models – so hide your prized possession to ensure it won’t become someone else’s.

Location, location, location

The best place to keep your motorbike is in your garage or shed and, if possible, install a ground anchor to provide a secure post to chain your bike to. If you’re forced to park your bike on the street – try and avoid parking it in the same spot every day, so thieves can’t predict where your bike will be at certain times. Plus, you should always look for well-lit and visible spots, ideally within sight of a security camera.

Make it traceable

To help the police track your bike and parts more easily, have your bike marked with its vehicle identification number (VIN) by etching it onto glass surfaces, such as the headlights. Another alternative is to mark bike parts with your postcode or the bike’s registration number using an ultraviolet marker pen. Although these markings are invisible to the naked eye, they appear when you shine an ultraviolet light on them.

Obviously, make sure you keep a record of which parts you’ve marked.

Think about your locks

Think logically about the locks that secure your bike – you shouldn’t be satisfied securing a £10,000 bike with a £50 lock. A single lock, even if it’s a good one, presents

only a single deterrent to a would-be thief; if you can, double-up by using a chain lock through the back wheel, fixing it to an immovable object. In addition, use a disc lock to secure the front brake disc. Another option is to use a grip lock to secure the brake and throttle controls – immobilising the throttle and front brake, or the clutch.

Sound the alarm

Making sure your motorbike has a quality alarm system will not only put thieves off, but should help reduce insurance premiums.

Different alarm systems offer different features; a simple shock sensor will go off if someone hits or tries to move the bike, whereas a remote kill switch will allow you to disengage the bike by cutting the connection between the battery and the starter. But the best (and most expensive) option is a Thatcham-rated one or two alarm system, with tracking, immobilisation, anti-grab and movement sensors.

Know your options if things go wrong

If the worst happens and your bike is nabbed, the first thing you should do is contact the police and report the theft. You must also alert your insurance company as soon as possible – but be aware, not all policies will cover the whole value of your vehicle – check your policy so you’re prepared. And if you have a brand-new motorbike, consider GAP insurance to ensure full financial protection.

‘The UK’s proudest motorbike owner’

Lincoln Jones, from Chester, has been named as the ‘UK’s Proudest Motorbike Owner’ following a nationwide competition by motorbike cleaning brand WMB Pride.

The prize up for grabs was a year’s supply of motorbike cleaning products to give the winner’s pride and joy that showroom look. The competition saw 1097 entrants, all with a passion for riding, from around the UK submitting photos of themselves with their bike and they had to explain why they felt they should receive the crown.

Lincoln stood out from the crowd with his hand-penned poem: I clean and polish my pride and joy, It’s got to be my favourite toy.

Hong Kong-based Astric is trying to raise some cash to create a motorcycle jacket that can be unfolded and then thrown over your bike.

The creators are currently trying to gather funding through the Kickstarter website for the water-repellent bike cover and jacket. It’s a clever bit of kit which simply allows you to fold the cover in a compression bag that attaches inside the back of the jacket – meaning that if the cover gets dirty, it won’t rub off onto the jacket.

Okay, so it’s not the world’s most protective motorcycle jacket either.

There’s no leather, Kevlar, Cordura, or any other high abrasion-

resistant fabric for that matter. It’s 65% nylon, 35% polyester with a polyester lining – and there’s no armour (unless you’re counting a folded-up bike cover in the small of your back). In reality, it’s an urban oriented jacket – with a cool bomber-style design, a soft looking liner and a bit of wind resistance.

You probably wouldn’t want to crash in it.

For the Red Marley Classic Trial on Easter Sunday, riders compete over three laps of fifteen sections. And, it’s the perfect warm up for the main event, the Red Marley Hill Climb, which takes place on Easter Monday.

The hill is 440 yards (1/4 mile) and reaches almost 1:1.5 near the top, where there is also a challenging jump known as “the pimple”. Riders compete four at a time from a standing start – and the first two over the finish line progress to the next round. If you fancy competing, you’ll need to be on a pre-1970 machine – but if you’re planning to take in the action from the side-lines, you’ll get to see some classic metal, from early rigid framed machines right through to competitive replica Triumph and BSA-based scramblers being pushed to their limits.

The weight of expectation

ECCity Motorcycles (and yes that is the way that they spell it) was created in 2011 in Grasse, south eastern France. They design, manufacture and sell 100% electric scooters.

The sound of the wind through the vents in my helmet was the loudest thing I heard from the ECCity L1e – well, apart from when it beeps at you to remind you that you’ve got the indicators on. That also helps pedestrians realise that you are there, as this scooter is a sneaky, cheeky little city run-around that’s built to last with quality in buckets.

First impressions

I was on the fence. Properly on that fence, looking at the L1e and not able to make my mind up if I liked the styling, or found it a bit to French for my middle earth Lincolnshire tastes.

I was on the fence too when it came to the specs and the fact that it houses a 4000W, hub mounted motor, weighs in at 150kg and does 30mph.

Yes – 4000W and does 30; not figures that filled me with joy when I thought of the miles I wanted to put on this scooter to make up my mind. Was I going to feel as if that well-powered hub motor was being held back, restricted even, to give this scooter its classification. Should I be looking at this from a different angle? Should I ignore the fence and just pull it down, run around on both sides of where the fence was and look at the whole picture? Also, I probably ought to take in the fact that this scooter is close to the upper end of the market and should be given the respect that a

high end piece of kit requires. This is not a cheap mass produced throwaway ride, this is hand-crafted, well-constructed and smooth, so smooth. The reason for the large capacity motor is the weight.

This scooter is no ‘Slim Jim’, no lightweight. It’s a full fat, planted on the road, block of zero emissions, battery powered transport.

Planted is a word I have already used, but that’s what the L1e is. With the fact the wheels are shod with Michelin ‘City Grip’ tyres on its 13in rims as standard and it has wellmanufactured and set-up suspension, you feel confident from the get go that this scooter will deliver you to your destination, with no dramas. That 150kg weight also helps to glue you to the tarmac and with a low centre of gravity, it’s easy to move around and handles like it’s close to being on rails.

Out on the road

Now the weather has not been that kind in the time that I’ve spent testing this scooter, but I have to say the tyres have coped brilliantly with all the cold slippery surfaces that I have ridden on. The suspension, although not off-road quality (and I say that due to the amount of potholes around Morton Towers at the moment), has given me a smooth and jolt-free experience. Braking is one thing that on all electric scooters I think needs to

be second to none. I cannot tell you the number of people who have stepped out on me. That brings into play not only my reactions, but the combined 220mm front and back disc, which have worked and had overtime as well. Performance was somewhat of a surprise the first time I rode the L1e.

Its throttle response was smooth, not snatchy, meaning that when leaving a junction, the power is delivered evenly and not in one lump sum. On the open road it gets up to 30mph quickly and holds it there without fail, even on the moderate uphills that I rode. Now before you write in saying that you bought one and it slowed down while going up the 30% hill out of Porlock; may I say if it’s steep it will slow a bit.

It’s got to you know, what with gravity and all that. On the ride from the office to visit a pal who lives just near Cadwell Park, the bike skipped along happily and even though I was held at that restricted 30mph, I felt happy. When I first started riding, my mate’s Fizzy did 35mph and nearly

choked half of Horncastle with fumes as it passed through. See? We are making progress here.

The seating position is very upright.

That might sound like a criticism – it’s not; it’s an observation. Lots of the scooters and e-bikes are what we used to call ‘sit up and beg’ in their seating position, but modern trends and designs have seen some of the mainstream manufacturers adopting a more leant back, feet forward approach. The L1e is upright and it works. Cockpit layout is basic, but functional – kind of like a VW. It’s got what you need and nothing else; but what you’ve got will last. The footplate coped well with my size 10 and a half-booted feet and should you decide to take a pillion, the fold-out footpegs are useful and not some toothpick or a bit of space behind the rider’s feet on a side runner.

Charging is as easy as sorting out your mobile phone, only the scooter is bigger. Under the seat is a cable of about 2m in length with a plug on it.

Into a standard socket and between three and nine hours later, you’re

fully charged, depending on how much you’ve used. Obviously nine hours is from very close to pushing it home level. The seat unit doesn’t have to be left open. If you have the chance to plug it in when out and about, you have two small openings at the front of the underseat storage designed to allow the cable to be used, and the seat unit to be shut down and locked.

As for storage, there’s perfectly ample room under the seat for a full face helmet and a small bag of groceries. The unit we were supplied had a small topbox that would hold

an open face. Under the handlebars was a small, but useful, lockable cubby hole.

Conclusion

The ECCity L1e is made with French passion and an eye for quality. Its beauty builds on you like a good wine.

The longer you have it, the better it gets. It’s a perfect city commuter at the upper end of its market. This scooter would sit well in Chelsea, in a garage next to a Maserati.

In Brief EU e-bike importers unite to combat potential trade measures on Chinese imports Representatives from 23 EU e-bike importers united in December 2017 to combat the potential fallout from an ongoing EU ‘anti-dumping’ investigation into electric bikes imported from China. The collective are concerned that restrictive trade measures could be imposed on Chinese electric bikes imported into the EU. The investigation stems from a complaint made by the European Bicycle Manufacturers Association.

David Miall of Kent-based e-bike brand Wisper has been appointed UK representative for the group.

He said: “One thing’s for sure, if the anti-dumping complaint is upheld, the European manufacturers will not be able to take up the slack; e-bikes will become more difficult to get hold of and prices will shoot up”.

Miall is calling for further support from UK electric bike retailers and manufacturers to support the cause: “We really do need as many interested firms to join in as possible.”

Running parallel with the European Commission’s investigation into anti-dumping is a second ‘anti-subsidy’ EU investigation into Chinese state intervention in the market.

A statement from EBMA says: “European e-bikes are undercut and overwhelmed in their home market by heavily subsidised, illegally dumped Chinese e-bikes sold below their cost of production.”

Both investigations are scheduled to conclude by January 2019.

However, according to Bike EU, the EBMA secretary general has said that provisional measures could be in place as early as the middle of 2018: “This is a possibility depending on the Commission’s investigators’ findings. This is a new case so provisional measures after nine months are possible.

We are also asking for the registration of the imports of e-bikes from China, so that duties can be adopted retroactively.”

The latest gossip from the electric bike market

Speed pedelec type approval changes The ‘old’ type approval for ‘speed pedelecs’ expired at the beginning of this year. ‘Speed pedelecs’ must now comply to type approval based on the EU 168/2013 regulations, which raises the question of how to deal with unsold inventory of ‘speed pedelecs’ that have the old 2002/24 type approval.

In the UK, ‘speed pedelecs’ are registered as mopeds and as such they already have a registration plate, so nothing will change as long as they meet the permanent requirements in the vehicle regulations for public road use.

New ‘speed pedelecs’ not yet registered must, at first registration,

either have a European type approval, or an individual admission. Until December 31, 2017, this meant either European 2002/24 or 168/2013 type approval. From January 1, 2018, this must be the type approval based on the European (framework) regulation (EU) 168/2013.

The regulation changes mean that distributors and dealers should check whether their inventory of new and unsold speed pedelecs complies with European 168/2013 type approval.

For speed pedelecs produced up to December 31, 2017, the old Directive 2002/24/EC still applies as it’s likely that there are still unsold speed pedelecs in shops.

Batribike partners with Pro-Movec Lincolnshire-based Batribike has formed a new company alongside Jesper Lundqvist, chief executive of the Danish e-bike company Pro-Movec. The newly-formed and co-owned Batribike Ltd expects the new ‘closer partnership’ to pave the way for business growth in an evolving market.

The company says that while the partnership may open up ‘footholds in other markets’ in the future, in the immediate term Batribike dealers “will benefit from good stock levels in their UK warehouse, competitive pricing levels, full technical support and spares back-up, customer confidence in quality European built electric bikes as well as access to latest innovations and designs”.

Steve Coulson, managing director of Batribike Ltd said: “The Batribike brand is going from strength-tostrength. We’ve established a strong

network of UK dealers as well as exporting to Australia and New Zealand. The relationship brings more opportunities for Batribike to expand and build on the strong foundation already established. We’re pleased to be working with Jesper and his team, and will be able to take full benefit from innovations coming from their R&D department.”

Jesper Lundqvist said: “Pro-Movec has been working with Batribike since 2016. We like the designs Batribike make. All models are highly relevant in the expanding UK e-bike market. The brand, the values at Batribike and the way they work fit perfectly with our way of doing business. The new closer partnership will bring even more corporate and retail opportunities within the expanding UK e-bike market”.

Electric future for urban motorcycling as Euro 5 looms The potential role of electric motorcycles in meeting new emissions regulations and improving air quality in urban areas was discussed at the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers’ (ACEM) 13th annual conference held in Brussels recently.

Greg Archer, director for clean vehicles at environmental pressure group Transport & Environment, told the conference: “Technology is changing faster than policy.

If the motorcycle industry is to become an urban solution, future vehicles must be not just low emissions, but zero emissions.”

He was referring to recent developments in battery technology that are making electric vehicles more viable, even though the drive to reduce motorcycle emissions through regulations such as Euro 4 and the forthcoming Euro 5 is advancing only slowly.

The event, attended by more than 250 delegates from leading motorcycle manufacturers and a number of car companies, heard how some of the future scenarios for bringing about better air quality in cities would have fundamental implications not only for urban motorcycle dealers but also the wider motorcycle industry.

Stefan Pierer, chief executive of KTM and current president of the ACEM, said: “Our industry is committed to sustainability, which we understand as a complex process related to environmental performance of vehicles, road safety and economic viability of our operations.”

He said that in the coming months the motorcycle industry across Europe would be working towards compliance with the Euro 5 standard but that clarity on its technical content was urgently needed from the European Commission.

Two new electric prototypes from Piaggio and KTM At the conference of ACEM (European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers) on sustainable mobility in Europe, the RESOLVE consortium presented two electric prototypes designed to reduce emissions and traffic in cities.

The RESOLVE project (an acronym for Range of Electric SOlutions for L

category VEhicles) aims to allow the development of a wide range of energy efficient vehicles (electric vehicles of the L category) which is mainly directed to motorists looking for a more agile means of moving around cities. The RESOLVE consortium aims to drive innovations in the electric vehicles sector.

The main European producers in this field are Piaggio and KTM, which brought two new prototypes to Brussels: Demonstrator D1 and D2.

Both are four-wheel vehicles driven by an electric motor capable of a 100km range. The maximum reachable speed is 45kph. The two vehicles were presented by Stefan Pierer, CEO KTM and ACEM president, and Michele Colaninno, Piaggio Fast Forward chairman and ACEM vice president.

Electric Bikes Sussex launches in-store speed pedelec registration service Electric Bikes Sussex has announced that it will introduce ‘speed pedelecs’ to its stores, with the added bonus of handling the necessary legal registrations on the premises.

‘Speed pedelecs’ have been a touchy subject for the bicycle business, with warnings issued that there is ‘no grey area’ in type approval; therefore Electric Bikes Sussex has moved to take the legwork out of ensuring customers are riding legally.

Managing director Graham Rowe explains: “It’s true – you can now buy a speed pedelec for yourself. We also offer a personalised ‘registration service’, whereby we can clear all the regulatory DVLA Registration challenges on your behalf, leaving you to arrange insurance and ride away. It’s important to understand the distinction between these 100% UK legally compliant models and other inferior or illegal electric bikes.

Customers will however have to arrange their own insurance, though Electric Bike Sussex can offer advice if needed. A motorbike standard helmet

is also a requirement for speed pedelec riders. On ‘speed pedelecs’ all the components (including brakes, wheels, forks and frame) are approved for higher speeds. There are various other mandatory differences.

For example, a speed pedelec must have a mirror and daytime running lights. Like mopeds, these builds must be ridden on the roads and not on cycle or shared use paths, unless otherwise stated.

Speed pedelecs are widely considered to be a viable solution for longer commutes. Indeed, research carried out by University of Brighton showed that the average cyclist considers a reasonable commute by conventional bike to be two-to-three miles. Ask the same question to an electric bike commuter and they say eight-to-ten miles. This means that commuting by electric bike becomes more realistic for a much wider range of people. Inhibitors to people commuting further is speed and/or or duration of journey. A speed pedelec can reduce journey times significantly.
