The TV superstar is going to pilot a 1000bhp Triumph at the end of August Words by: Tony Carter

It will surprise a few people in the land speed chasing club that Triumph has landed none other than Guy Martin to pilot its awesome Triumph Rocket III Streamliner.

The specially-built top-end machine is powered by two 2.3 litre Triumph Rocket III engines and kicks out 1000bhp.

Martin is going to pilot the bullet-shaped speed machine at the Bonneville Speedway Salt Flats in Utah, USA between August 23 and 27.

376.363mph over the measured mile in two separate runs to take the record. If they are successful then the team will get the speed record back for Triumph since the British firm last held the crown back in 1970.

Triumph has a long legacy of smashing the land speed record and held the title of ‘World’s Fastest Motorcycle’ from 1955 to 1970 with the exception of a brief 33-day period.

The record-breaking Triumph Streamliners included Devil’s Arrow, Texas Ceegar, Dudek Streamliner and Gyronaut X1, the former achieving a top speed of 245.667mph.

Today’s fastest speed, held by Rocky Robinson since 2010 riding the Top Oil-Ack Attack streamliner, sits at 376.363mph.

The 2015 Triumph Rocket Streamliner features a carbon Kevlar monocoque construction with two turbocharged Triumph Rocket III engines producing a combined 1,000 bhp at 9,000 rpm.

The motorcycle is 25.5 feet long, two feet wide and three feet tall.

Powered by methanol fuel, the bike is competing in the Division C (streamlined motorcycle) category.

Suzuki’s turbocharged future bike revealed

Patents given the go-ahead point to a production run of small-capacity, high-power roadsters.

Words by: Leon Rose and Tony Carter New patents filed by Suzuki and approved in America show the factory is working on a production 588cc parallel twin with a turbocharger.

The drawings clearly show the turbocharger mounted on the exhaust downtubes while the side-on drawings show the bike will have a single-sided swingarm (similar in look to that used on the Ducati Diavel) but will also feature a long wheelbase but fairly sporty-yet-upright riding position.

We have been told that special attention has been paid to how quickly the bike will lay into corners, the front wheel has been pulled back to the engine to give the bike a lightness of feel, while the overall centre of gravity is very low indeed to keep up the machine’s nimble nature.

The long wheelbase will mean that on

straights and motorways the new bike should be very well mannered.

The patents are clearly readying for a production version of the firm’s Recursion prototype that was touted as having a 588cc in-line twin cylinder motor with an intercooler turbo providing a power boost. It was first shown in Japan in 2013.

Paul de Lusignan, General Manager of Suzuki GB PLC, said: “We have no information on patents filed presently on a new engine with forced induction. However, the Recursion concept machine was presented just over a year ago with similar technology, but there are no immediate plans for a model like this to make production.”

The word ‘immediate’ in the official response is important to note. It’s a motorcycle that we will see in Suzuki’s line-up and possibly as part of the 2016 range.

Here’s the ‘concept’ Suzuki Recursion It’s clear to see just how close the patent drawings are to the Recursion concept Suzuki revealed at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. The outlines of the motorcycles are identical, right down to the chunky single-sided swingarm and modern café racer-style top fairing.

And here’s the supercharged, NAKED version patent!

Here’s another patent of the new Suzuki that has been approved, but this one’s naked and instead of a turbocharger it has a supercharger fitted.

The bike looks the same as the other patent version, but it has a more relaxed riding position with the familiar single-sided swingarm mated to a long wheelbase.

No fairing is visible on the supercharged bike, but the patent makes it clear that a surge tank for the supercharger is mounted behind a cylinder head. An intercooler is adjacent to the surge tank (behind the cylinder head, too) and there is a supercharger mounted in front of the intercooler.

BMW shows 2016 bikes And the GS gets a stealthy new look BMW Motorrad has announced a number of 2016 model year updates including the new Dynamic Brake Light, a special edition model and new colour options. The changes to the range will all be available from August 1.

The S 1000 RR now comes in black and red.

Mid-corner ABS coming to the big GS range (and others) BMW Motorrad’s cornering braking system ABS Pro, which debuted as a factory-fit option on the 2015 S 1000 XR, will be available to order on the

2016 R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure.

The system will also be included as standard on the 2016 K 1600 GT, GTL and GTL Exclusive models.

As part of BMW Motorrad’s Safety 360° strategy, Dynamic Brake Light is a new bit of rider support to get dozy car drivers to pay more notice.

The Dynamic Brake Light, part of the BMW ABS Pro system, operates in two stages. If the rider brakes from over 50kph, the rear brake light flashes repeatedly, making the motorcycle as visible as possible to other road users. If the speed drops below 14kph then the hazard warning lights are automatically activated. They switch off once the rider accelerates back up to 20kph.

The future of kit: meet the no hearing-loss helmet

An early look at an idea that might just make earplugs when riding a thing of the past Words by: Carli-Ann Smith

This is Louie Amphlett, a recent product design graduate from the University of Brighton, who says that his revolutionary design for a new style of motorcycle helmet could change bikers’ lives forever.

“When it came to choosing my final year project, I decided to focus on improving rider comfort and welfare.

Through that project I investigated a few avenues which might be potential problems – I decided on hearing loss.

“It’s something close to home as my dad suffers from it. While it’s associated with other factors including workplace and festivals for the last 30 years or so – riding a motorcycle has contributed too. I think he started to use hearing protection in the late 1990s or so but after that time it’s already had a few decades of damage.

“Unfortunately there’s not any surgery that’s possible to resurrect the original hearing ability – once it’s gone then it’s gone.”

The Lenza One helmet prototype has three main features to help prevent hearing loss – Louie decided not to focus on overall

safety as part of his project due to it being a well-trodden area of research – it’s not just wind noise that had to be considered, it’s vibrations too…

“As wind travels over the surface of the helmet it creates random pressure fluctuations on the helmet, these are vibrations which are sent directly through the helmet shell through your skull to your mastoid bone [one of the most important structures in your inner ear – not solid and rigid like most bones but is made out of air sacs and resembles a sponge]. This causes the most significant level of damage.

The helmet has a suspended shell on the top of the shell to try and absorb some of those vibrations.

“As far as I know, I haven’t found any other helmets which feature any technology which can actually absorb the vibrations – of course the EPS liner within the helmet will help absorb some properties but there is no intentional technology which aims to absorb the wind vibration.

“Secondly, the helmet has a dimpled surface on the top – like a golf ball – and uses the same technology. On a golf ball, the dimples are used to reduce drag, on the helmet, it does the same but it has an added benefit. As air travels over the helmet, the air breaks away from the surface as it creates turbulent flow – that low pressure of turbulent flow creates noise. The dimples enable the air to stick to the surface for longer which reduces the amount of turbulence, which in turn reduces the amount of noise generated.

“The third feature is an elongated shape – the helmet isn’t quite as spherical as a standard helmet. If you think of perhaps an airfoil of an aeroplane, that’s the ideal aerodynamic shape, this helmet tries to mimic that with a closer representation to it than a standard helmet. Developing the helmet and making the prototype has taken up the last four and a half months.”

Just because his degree has finished doesn’t mean that Louie’s project is being put away in a cupboard somewhere and never

thought about again, he’s got plans.

“I have some more tests planned in the wind tunnel. I performed some preliminary tests and I was able to get some data but the measurement methods weren’t that reliable so I need to use some more precise measuring techniques to determine the extent that my helmet can try to reduce noise but it’s quite a complex system to try and measure and record that data. The university has a wind tunnel test facility so I am able to perform the tests there. I haven’t approached any manufacturers – yet…”

This is random and I wonder if I am the most QLondon unlucky biker in the world! I am a courier in and was riding my old rat of a CX500. As

usual traffic was rammed so I was filtering but as I passed an HGV the driver dropped a lit fag out of the window which fell into my jacket. There was mucho screaming on my part, a severe wobble and I crashed into another car (causing damage) and fell off. The CX500 looks pretty much the same i.e. battered but injury wise I have broken my wrist and have a burn on my chest. Is this too random for me to claim?

get short listed for an award. However, I did see a video of a man being chased by an elephant while riding his moped so I don’t think you would win. In short, the first ‘link’ in the ‘chain’ of causation is down to Mr HGV driver. If he hadn’t dropped his fag then you wouldn’t have fallen off. You can bring a claim against him for your losses and so can the owner of the car.

Court later on. It doesn’t seem like enough. I have told my solicitor that I will sue him.

Firstly, it’s not good you got hurt but liability was admitted and the other side agreed to pay for physiotherapy. This is entirely reasonable.

Why should they keep paying for something that you can’t be bothered to attend? You don’t get compensation for the fact you “could have been killed.” Your solicitor is correct and I don’t have much sympathy as you would have the medical evidence if you had managed to go to the appointments. As for a way forward, you have choices but these have consequences. You could accept the offer but it may not be enough i.e. if you needed an operation etc. in the future.

Alternatively, you could get further medical evidence and settle later once you know what the score is. However, if the evidence doesn’t support an award more than the current offer, you may well be liable for your legal costs, your medical disbursements and the legal costs of the other side from the time you could have accepted the offer until settlement.

Honda trademarks RVF name (again)

Honda has applied for a new trademark in the southern hemisphere – and the trademark application is for the name ‘RVF’.

What can this mean? Well, either Honda is simply banking the name as a ‘just-in-case’ measure or the factory is getting all of its ducks in line ahead of some model that’s on the superbike horizon.

The sporty Adventure

Don’t think of this as an Adventure bike, think of it as an upright superbike.

A comfortable, mile-munching upright superbike, in fact.

This is the 160bhp, 83lb-ft, S1000R-powered upright Adventure bike from BMW. Geared directly at the likes of Ducati’s Multistrada, this is one bike with a lot on its hands. Can it match the opposition and then whup it?

Ever since its reveal late last year the XR’s been subjected to a plethora of opinions, quite often being dismissed as BMW’s attempt at recreating Ducati’s Multistrada.

It’s the fourth addition to BMW’s S1000 family, each powered by the highly-praised 999cc, in-line-four motor. While it doesn’t use the same 200bhp engine as seen in the HP4 or S1000RR, it mirrors the naked S1000Rs identically, with the same gearing, cam-profiles and 160bhptuned output focussed on delivering low rpm torque and a consistently smooth delivery all the way through its rev range.

A different exhaust and altered fuelling optimise the package, which is also bolstered by an all-new frame and swingarm, lengthening the bike’s wheelbase by 109mm (now 1548mm).

As the head of BMW’s in-line-four model line Rudi Schneider explained: “The XR needed its own chassis. The bike’s frame needed to be longer for added stability and taller for comfort.”

While it’s hard to gauge the model’s extended wheelbase from the way it looks alone, there’s no mistaking its domineeringly tall build, which features a rider’s seat height of 840mm. At 5ft 10in, swinging a leg over the bike – which comes with an adjustable screen and hand-guards as standard – was a bit of a challenge. My feet were only able to reach the ground on tiptoes. Thankfully, there’s a low seat option available (820mm) and also the potential to buy the bike

in a lower-suspended version (reducing the minimum seat height to 790mm).

To create the desired look and ride height, the XR’s suspension travel is longer than the S1000R’s, 30mm at the front and 20mm at the rear. On the bikes we tested near Barcelona, the S1000XR Sport SEs were equipped with BMW’s proven Electronic Suspension Adjustment technology.

By switching through the options the rigidity and focus of the setup could be altered to suit our preferences and this is also the case for the power modes.

The XR comes with ‘Rain’ and ‘Road’ riding modes as standard, but our higher-spec options also featured the livelier ‘Dynamic’ and the customisable ‘Dynamic Pro’ outputs.

Unlike the R1200RS reviewed this month, the XR’s Pro mode also carries BMW’s new ABS Pro technology, allowing you to brake in corners without risking the front wheel washing out by moderating the braking pressure according to the angle of lean picked up by the bike’s sensors. As with all BMWs built since 2013, the standard bike is equipped with traditional ABS. It took just a few metres of road to realise that this model is substantially different to anything else on the market, including the Multistrada. For such a big motorcycle and weighing 228kg, its extremely agile handling and instantaneously smooth engine pickup blew me away. The bike feels

We reckon it’ll be the colour to go for, if you can. very well balanced and easy to ride, with a lightweight clutch and a silky smooth throttle. BMW’s Gear Shift Assist Pro gave its usual effortless gear changes as we negotiated the local town’s intricate thoroughfares en route to the magnificent mountains of Montserrat.

By the time we’d reached the towering, wind-calved masses of stone, the half-analogue, half-digital dash was showing we were 40-miles into our 180-mile trip. The path so far had been relatively mild and the pace

restrained, with the bike acting as a well-behaved tourer, much akin to the R1200GS. It had proven a master of slow speeds, but now the wick was set to be turned up and the bike’s true potential was going to be unleashed on one of Europe’s best mountain passes.

The fantastically surfaced slither of tarmac we were now riding climbed rapidly skywards, twisting across a succession of hairpins. I normally hate tight corners, but the punch from the XR’s motor proved a treat, keeping

the gearbox in second and screaming the motor up to its limiter before repeating the process once more.

The bike’s instant burst of energy from just over 1000rpm is addictive, along with the deep burble that emits from the standard end-can. Having sampled the bike in ‘Road’ mode, ‘Dynamic’ unleashed a sharper throttle response from the more aggressive map. When pushing hard in the first two gears the orange hazard flash from the clocks told how hard the bike’s Dynamic Traction

Control was working to keep the Pirelli Rosso IIs gripping and from lifting the front wheel.

A couple of thousand feet up the road became more sweeping and much faster as we crested the mountains’ formation. Every corner that came our way confirmed the XR’s extremely good handling and stability.

It didn’t matter what speed you pitched the bike into a corner, it dealt with all that came its way and challenged you for more. Road imperfections were absorbed effortlessly by the long travel suspension and even the slickness of overbanding failed to cull my

confidence, as the wheels never failed to find grip and deliver a marvellous account of information on what was going on beneath you, especially when braking hard and even to the point of engaging the ABS. Worn out from the excitement, the pace eventually eased off as the route became slightly more sedate. The road we were now riding was open to the elements and it gave the perfect opportunity to get an appreciation of the bike’s level of protection.

Compared to a GS, the XR’s screen is definitely smaller, but having adjusted it to its highest position, I never felt vulnerable to buffeting.

The nose fairing did a good job of keeping the wind from my shoulders and torso, while the handgrips lessened the impact on my arms.

Things felt pretty comfortable, made all the more so by the spacious rider’s seat and the long stretch down to the pegs below my feet. The broad handlebars are well positioned, not requiring a big reach forward and the XR offers a very natural and upright riding position. One thing I did notice was the pegs became buzzy at higher revs, but this was eradicated by short-shifting to the next gear, though this didn’t cure the shaking rearward view from the mirrors.

As the day wound on I found myself liking this motorcycle more and more and I now consider it one of the best road-focussed bikes I’ve ever ridden.

People often complain touring bikes are lacking in the corners, while sports bikes are terrible on the long slog down to favoured corners. But here’s a model that excels in both fields. It is the ultimate compromise between sports and touring.

BMW might not have been the first to enter the ‘adventure-sports’ sector, but I’m more than confident the arrival of the XR will shake things up, just as the S1000RR did in 2009 when it descended on the supersport scene.

An old tip but a good one

Hello to all riders out there. I expect this is a well-known tip, but I thought I’d share it with you.

Last Autumn I was caught out by a change in the weather and despite wearing good quality leather gloves, my hands were frozen to the point that I could not feel the controls.

I stopped at services on the M5 and bought a coffee to warm up. As a desperate measure I swiped a few pairs of the disposable gloves from the dispenser at the fuel pumps - put one pair on under my gloves and stashed the rest in my jacket. I continued my journey in the bad weather and my fingers were toasty!

I have picked up a copy of MCM in recent months and found it to be an excellent and comprehensive read for ‘real world’ motorcycling.

I ride a modern bike (2013 Ducati Multistrada) and an old bike (1997 Ducati 900ss). They are light years apart technologically. The Multistrada is very forgiving and papers over my deficiencies, while the 900ss does not. I know what I cannot do on a bike and while modern bikes do everything with ease, they do not make me a better rider. So, I have to be honest with myself when I ride any bike or I will be inspecting the nearest ditch.

Rider amazed by modern tyres

After having 20 years off from biking to have children and buy a house I must say that my return to biking has been a bit of a shock. Firstly the bikes seem to be more stable and rideable but secondly it’s the tyres.

The tyres these days are amazing. They grip like grippy things and they are stupidly cheap. In the Nineties if I wanted a set of tyres that actually gripped the road I would have to spend the best part of a month’s wages and then you still couldn’t use them in the wet and they would only last about 1000 miles.

Now you can get a really good set for £300 that are good in the wet and last 6000 miles. Even the tyres that came with my new bike were better than the ones we

used to get back then. I recently bought some road pilots after having them recommended by my bike dealer. They are amazing and have completely changed the handling of the bike and I laugh at rainy days now instead of heading out with fear in my heart. I do laugh at others who moan about lack of grip in modern tyres.

KTM Freeride: Doing the weekend ride thing

Better than you think and as quiet as you’d want. Is this the perfect way to take in a summer’s weekend of riding? Could be.

Words by: Tim Britton Photography: Joe Dick KTM has grabbed the electric lead with its Freeride E, a proper motorcycle aimed at taking on the petrol bikes and do you know what? After a day spent riding one at E-Scape, it really does just that.

The package

On the day there were two basic models available for trying – an out-and-out MX version and a potentially road legal enduro version. Both have a composite steel/aluminium perimeter frame designed to provide the required stiffness for off-road action and to hold the motor as low down as possible.

At either end is superb White Power suspension, the front being 43mm diameter USD, while at the rear is a single shock directly connected to the swingarm and giving a progressive action with no surprises.

Both units are adjustable for rider needs.

However, the motor is the exciting bit.

Totally sealed, it delivers 31ft-lb (42Nm) of torque from the 300v multi cell – 360 of the blighters – power pack and will give around an hour’s riding. It takes 50 minutes to whack the charge up to 80% and 80 minutes to get it fully charged.

What’s it like to ride?

It’s a bit different from a geared petrol motorcycle, though not that much different from a twist and go and takes about a nanosecond to mentally adjust to the fact

that the left lever is a brake rather than a clutch.

Power settings, acceleration and battery discharge rates are all handily presented in what is best described as a tank top display, even though there’s no tank. Opting for the eco setting to start, the display sets up when the ignition switch is turned on. Setting one pressed, the display blinks and twist the throttle to go forward. No noise, no fuss.

The course at this facility includes lots of varying routes with jumps, turns, water splashes, ripples and berms that the Freeride tackled easily, even in eco mode, clicking to advanced setting... well, a whole new dimension.

Yamaha N-Max 125

Sporty, urban and commuter.We’ve heard it all before of course, but this time Yamaha thinks it’s onto a real winner.

ENGINE

The engine uses Yamaha’s ‘Blue Core’ approach – basically, a fancy way that Yamaha has chosen to say it is making compact engines that offer good fuel economy but are fun to ride too. The 125cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine produces 12bhp of power and 8.6lb-ft of torque. The NMAX is the first Yamaha scooter to feature a four-valve cylinder head with a newly developed variable valve actuation (VVA) for a strong, linear feeling when rolling back the throttle.

The VVA system works via a mechanism that shifts between two different intake cam lobes depending on engine speed.

Valve timing normally uses just one lobe, a compromise between low speed torque and high speed power, but this, says Yamaha, offers the best of both worlds.

With Honda’s stop/start PCX clearly in its sights, the NMAX has made fuel economy a priority, with much attention paid to minimising the frictional losses between the piston and cylinder wall. So the NMAX features an offset cylinder and there’s a DiASil coating on the bore. Yamaha quotes 107mpg in WMTC mode – after a morning blatting around Lisbon we saw 108mpg on the dashboard display, so if that’s accurate, it’s bang on what it claims.

CHASSIS

The new lightweight tubular frame is covered by an aerodynamic cowl with those distinctive ‘Boomerang’ side motifs inspired by the bigger MAX models in the Yammie range. Again, like its bigger

brothers, the NMAX features a central ‘tunnel’ containing the fuel tank and features linked type engine mounts using rubber bushes that absorb vibration for a comfy ride.

Despite being a 125, Yamaha has been keen to offer ‘premium class comfort’ for riders of all shapes and sizes. The body design allows plenty of room to stretch out your legs and change from a sporty to relaxed riding style when required or desired and because of the side mounted radiator there’s plenty of space on the footboards. There’s plenty of room for a pillion on the stepped dual seat with grab bar and dedicated footpegs.

Twin rear shock absorbers, equipped with dual rate springs (though no pre-load adjustment) look after the suspension on the rear, while 13in wheels are fitted front and rear. There’s a 6.6-litre fuel tank and the seat height is a comfortable 765mm.

Under the seat is a large helmet storage compartment that will swallow a large full-face lid (provided it’s put in upside down) and a spring mechanism keeps the seat open so you don’t have to balance it on your head to keep it open.

RIDE

Lisbon is probably an ideal city to test ride the NMAX – it’s a maze of hilly narrow streets, many of them cobbled, with manic traffic and trundling trams thrown in.

Fortunately, the Yamaha is a typical twist & go scooter in that it’s supremely easy to just hop on and ride. The low seat (765mm) allowed my 30-inch legs to have both feet

flat on the ground and the riding position is nicely upright.

So does the VVA (variable valve timing) actually work? The NMAX certainly has plenty of punch from low down – Yamaha claims that it accelerates faster than its arch-rival Honda PCX, although without a side by side comparison that’s difficult to verify. The good news is that there’s no power ‘step’ when the VVA moves to the high speed cam at 6000rpm – power just keeps on building. It’s plenty for city traffic up to 50mph limits.

With 13-inch wheels and a longish wheelbase, the NMAX feels stable as well as easy to nip in and out of gaps, which is just what you want for an urban scoot. The brakes aren’t linked, which some riders prefer, but the extra confidence endowed

by ABS, especially on wet and greasy tarmac, will be a real boon to year-round commuters, so full marks to Yamaha for making this part of the standard spec for Europe.

Scorpion Trail II tyre

Got a big Adventure bike? Get these on it.The old Scorpions were good, but these new ones change the field of play completely.

Words by: Tony Carter Modern tyres are amazing pieces of equipment. Just 10 years ago a tyre that’d been designed for a big Adventure-type bike was pretty rubbish – it took ages to warm up and

the floating blocks of rubber moved around a lot.

That movement, in itself, meant two things when riding on the road – very quick wear on the tyre for rubbish mileage and very poor feel when the bike was leant over.

But tyres now offer huge mileages, are stable as anything, look the part, give terrific feedback when leant right over and are ready to rock within a couple of miles. MCM has been out testing the latest tyre from Pirelli, the Scorpion Trail II.

How do they feel?

Right from the off the difference between the new and old Scorpion Trail tyre is obvious. According to Pirelli the new tyre is 90% on road and 10% off-road capable and that seems about right given how much (or, perhaps more to the point) how little most owners of big Adventure bikes take their pride and joy onto the dirt.

So, essentially, the Scorpion Trail II is a bigger-patterned version of the firm’s superb Angel GT sports touring tyre. The grip levels are fabulous and let you get the bike over a long, long way in complete confidence. Instant grip is read from the off and there’s little in the way of gripes here.

But where the tyres really score the biggest marks is the way they feel

on motorways and smooth, sweeping fast roads. The manners are impeccable – the steel belt wound around the carcass stops the tyre changing shape at speed and means that the quality of ride is exceptional.

In terms of mileage, we rode for a couple of hundred miles on the Scorpions and they looked untouched at the end of it. Pirelli claims that the range gives considerably more mileage return than the previous tyres and once we’ve had them for a few thousand miles we’ll report back. But in terms of tyre testing over a day at pace, the Scorpion Trail II tyres are worth raving about. Exceptional feedback and feel from a great tyre to ride on.

Highly recommended.

Who is it aimed at?

Suitable for the latest generation adventure touring and enduro street motorcycles and able to tackle both long journeys and light off-road sections, the new Scorpion Trail II has been designed for motorcycles such as the Ducati Multistrada, Aprilia Caponord, BMW R 1200 GS, Triumph

Tiger, KTM 1190 Adventure, Honda Crosstourer, Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré, Kawasaki Versys and Suzuki V-Strom, models that are increasingly being purchased by riders strictly for use on the road but which, if necessary, may also face stretches of dirt and light off-road.

Pirelli has combined two top-selling tyres to make the Scorpion Trail II. The original Scorpion tyre was mashed with the Angel GT sport touring tyre for the new rubber.

What that means in the real world is that while the new Scorpion Trail II might look like a standard type of big Adventure tyre, it performs in a very similar way to the Angel GT, a tyre MCM tested a year ago and rated as possibly the best sport touring tyre ever made.

Special attention was paid to the side grooves of the Scorpion Trail II that are built into the tread pattern to give optimal drainage in the wet. They allow the rubber to have as much sound grip with the road surface as possible. Pirelli says the central grooves have also been specially designed to shift water but they also help the tyre’s stability at speed.

The compounds and profiles Pirelli was the first company to introduce the bi-compound solution in some rear sizes of enduro street tyres with the original Scorpion Trail. With the new tyre that bi-compound rubber lay-down is on all of the rear tyres in the Scorpion Trail II range.

Scorpion Trail II tyres score the biggest in terms of feel. The profiles of the new tyres are derived directly from those used for the Angel GT sport touring tyres.

Thanks to a shorter, wider, contact patch area, the profile helps to reduce and level the wear of the tread, giving greater mileage.

The structure

Winding a very thin steel wire around the carcass at key points during construction isn’t exactly new tech and it’s not exactly exclusive in the motorcycle tyre world either – but what Pirelli have done with the new tyre is learn how to vary the amount of winds and the exact spacing between them at the most beneficial areas of the tyre’s carcass before the rubber is laid on top.

This gives the tyres the structural strength to be able to hold up to the stresses put through them at high angles of lean but it also means that when on motorways and touring at pace the tyre feels very stable and ‘quietens down’ the tyre noise and vibration through the bike.

Story of the Route

There are around 24 white horses in Britain, 13 of which are in Wiltshire and of these eight are still visible.

Most of the horses are dated from the last 300 years. This route takes in the countryside of Hampshire and Wiltshire and is named after the White Horses carved into the surrounding hills.

The starting point is at Ower Services, just on the edge of the New Forest National Park and from here you travel northwards towards Pewsey, where the first white horse is located. Following the route to Alton Barnes, you will see the second white horse. The third is on the A345 Marlborough and Pewsey road.

Travelling from Pewsey on the A345 back to Salisbury, there is a crossroads with the A303. A right turn here leads back to Stonehenge, a famous site that needs no introduction.

The route takes in Salisbury, where you may like to stop off. Salisbury’s Early English Gothic cathedral is home to the famous Magna Carta.

The A36, which takes you back to Ower services, passes through the New Forest National Park.

This is a route that is a mix of town and country.

It’s one of the pluses of motorcycling and a great way to carve through traffic.

There are a few crucial things to know about filtering on a motorcycle. Get them right and any hold-up that draws to a halt the journey of the car, van or lorry will be nothing but a minor inconvenience for you.

So here’s those tips laid out in an easy-to-learn way. Yep, there’s some basic stuff here, but it’s always good to go over the sort of info that can save you, whether you are new or old to biking. Read this, keep it in your mind and use it the next time you’re passing people parked up in their tin boxes.

And smile your way to motorcycling happiness as you do. Good luck.

Step one: Observe before you commit

Yes, it may be from the department of the bleedin’ obvious perhaps but this can be the most crucial aspect of getting filtering right. Don’t assume that you CAN filter and just move to the centre of the road and plough on regardless.

Look past the immediate traffic and see what’s what a bit further down the lane.

It’s worth checking if there are any cars that have thoughtfully parked up so close to the middle of the road that you can’t even get a bike down there.

It might be worth sitting and waiting rather than filtering and finding yourself in trouble and unable to go anywhere to get out of it.

Key points:

■ Slow down well before you get to the back of the stationary traffic ■ Move over to the edge of your lane nice and early so that you can see as far ahead as possible ■ If in doubt, don’t filter. Stay safe and get back into a better lane position.

Step two: Keep your distance

Filtering is travelling past stationary traffic (we know that much) but the real trick to having a stress-free time while doing it is to keep a sensible distance from the traffic you’re going past.

There’s no right or wrong amount really because it all depends on two factors; the position of the stationary traffic you’re overtaking (in relation to

LEGO IMPROVE 31 the lane it’s in) and the oncoming traffic (the volume, the speed and the proximity).

Ideally you should leave a few feet of space between your left side and the stationary traffic, but as far as this rule goes, you’ve got to make a judgement on the fly.

Key points:

■ You should leave a few feet between you and the traffic you’re overtaking ■ Don’t drift into oncoming traffic ■ Take into account the speed of the oncoming traffic.

Step 3a/3b: Watch for doors and cars pulling across lanes

This leads on from the previous point about putting some space between you and the traffic you’re filtering past. It’s fine and good practice to make space, yes, but don’t turn off the usual ‘biker’s senses’ and stop looking for numpties out there.

If the traffic has been sat for a while then you’ll often find drivers opening

their car doors to get out for a look or just swinging their car around in a U-turn and grumpily heading off in the opposite direction. Both things can have you on your arse in a split second. Be wary.

Key points:

■ Be sharp, don’t switch off ■ Watch for car doors opening into your path ■ Watch for frustrated drivers U-turning their car around right in front of you.

Step four: Working the gaps

A useful tool this, especially if you’ve been filtering for a while.

Naturally, in any long line of traffic, there will be gaps and these can be ideal for a bit of a rest. If you

see a gap and fancy a few seconds of respite from the intense concentration that’s needed when filtering then take a breather.

But be aware that losing those few feet of space to some drivers can be enough to enrage them into pressuring you back out into the flow.

Keep your eye on the car and driver you’re just about to drop in front of into the gap preceding them.

■ Be very aware of the rider in front of you and drop back to ensure plenty of room accordingly.

Key points:

■ See a gap, use it for a breather ■ Before you commit to taking the space, check out the car and driver – rev-happy-Harry in his clapped out, loud-piped Clio might see you slotting in front as an affront to his very tiny manhood.

Step five: Filtering as a group

It’s possible to filter as a group, well group might be too much of a description really, what you’re actually doing is riding in group formation until you get to the stationary traffic and then (keeping in your preallocated order) filtering as individuals.

Each rider has to be responsible for their own riding and decision making.

The only added thing to be aware of and not ignore is the fact you’ve got another rider in front of you, so drop back and increase the gap between you accordingly.

Key points:

■ Switch from group to single file formation as early as possible, give yourself plenty of time ■ Each rider is responsible for their own riding, ride as individuals once filtering

Step six: The tools at your disposal

Don’t forget that being on a motorcycle doesn’t always mean you’re without tools to use in the ancient art of filtering. Making sure you’ve got your headlights on is always a good start. You might prefer to flick your hazards on too (we don’t as a rule but we’ll let you judge this as you go).

If you don’t think a driver has seen you and is becoming a bit of a pest, or just drifting across from their lane as they inch along while texting etc. then a quick, loud blip on the throttle with the clutch pulled in is far more effective at getting their attention

instead of a dab on the horn. And if someone does get out of the way and tries to help you as you filter then make sure you acknowledge the gesture with a wave of the hand or thumbs up as you go past. It means a lot to the driver and could just ensure that they help out other bikers in the future too!

Key points:

■ Headlights on!

■ Blip the throttle if you need to get their attention ■ If the driver’s been helpful then say thank you.

Putting in the miles with the kit that matters

arai axces Helmet From £249.99 I www.whyarai.co.uk Tested by: Bob Pickett For the last decade I have entrusted Arai with the task of looking after my brain when riding. From the feel when wearing to the quality of the finish, these helmets just ooze class.

I am also a biker on a budget and this was my one gripe with Arai, as sometimes there seemed to be a wide gap between the tech offered up between the bottom and top ends of the range. The Axces has addressed this situation with better-looking venting.

Some things never change on an Arai. I pulled on the Axces for the first time, there was a moment of discomfort and then “Oh, that feels right”... which is how my last two Arais stayed for their lifespan.

The quality of the finish (Arai makes its shells extra hard and shiny to help the helmet slide in the event of a crash) is even better than on my previous Arai Condor. Just like my Condor, the weight of the Axces is beautifully balanced.

So, what has changed? Arai evolves, so change comes in gradually. But the Axces has made a real leap forward when compared to my Condor.

The visor features Pinlock II, covering almost the entire surface. This is good news as it means no more peripheral misting or affected vision from looking through coated and non-coated parts of the visor.

This meant the visor vents had to be dropped (no issue for me, I never used them as they seemed to blow air straight into my eyes!) – a bonus as it brought the venting system from further up the Arai range to the Axces. The chin vent is essentially the same (two settings when open – one blows air on to your neck, the other on to your face), but it now features a lip that lets you operate it easily, even in thick gloves.

venting. Again with twin settings, the top vent control is rear-set, just the right place to reach back easily to operate on the move in gloves.

The ratcheting is smooth, but gives enough feedback to tell the rider the setting they have selected.

And the venting is effective. It is good enough that with both sets of vents fully open on a pleasant (if slightly cool) day, I had to shut them off as my head was cold. In heat, as long as you are moving just a little, the venting will keep your head cool.

But better venting brings with it the old Arai complaint. The Axces, like all Arai helmets, is noisy. With the vents open earplugs are a good idea and if I bend my head too far downwards there is a strange squeak as air gets forced through the top of the visor.

The Arai Axces is quality. The enhancements since I last bought a helmet make it a game-changer in this price bracket. Go and try one, I think you will be impressed.

Where’s the bright yellow stuff? For years, Hood’s bike jeans have been lined with a (lurid) yellow, military grade K-Tech para-aramid lining. But for 2015 Hood has sourced a new variety of aramid.

There are two things to note about this: 1) It is more of a dull green, 2) the aramid is shaved and woven to make it feel softer.

The new aramid is instantly comfortable, feeling more like denim. Hood has managed to save costs with the new material, which it is passing on to the customer by extending the surface covered so the whole leg is protected.

There is a slight compromise however. The old lining was drag tested at up to 1200m. The new lining drag tests to just shy of 1000 – but if I am still sliding down the road at approaching the kilometre mark, frankly I have more to worry about than if my jeans lining is going to hold out.

My jeans feature the optional D30 armour at the hips and knees, although you would not notice it at a glance. Originally designed to protect Canadian athletes at the 2006 Winter Olympics, D30 is superb stuff. In a relaxed state, such as when riding and walking, the armour feels soft. But under impact the molecular structure changes, thickening and absorbing the force. It also hardens, massively reducing shock.

But what of the jeans themselves? Hood has been introducing incremental improvements for years And the 2015 K7s are the result of this.

They are made of top-quality heavy denim and the styling has been improved so you would happily wear these down the pub and no-one would realise they were biking jeans and not ‘fashion’ items. The aramid layer means they’re a little warmer than a ‘normal’ pair of jeans, but riding in colder weather it would make sense to slip on a base layer.

The K7s are comfortable on and off the bike, look good and will protect me from both impact and a slide. To my mind, Hood’s jeans are the best you can buy – and the best just got better.

Kawasaki’s KLE500

The super utility bike that’s better than you think – providing you go back early enough Words: Steve Cooper

If you look up this month’s subject matter online you might well come away with the opinion the bike is rather like the one and only mainstream hit by The Monks – Nice Legs, Shame About the Face.

Kawasaki’s second iteration of the KLE500 was something of a lemon – all show and very little go. Emissions legislation had pulled the rug out from underneath what had previously been a rather nice bike. Go back to the early 1990s and things were a little different. Kawasaki was applying lateral thinking to their design and marketing like few others.

Not too long after the launch of the legendary GPZ900R someone at Kawasaki Central had the bright idea of effectively axing the four-pot motor in half to produce a sub 500 twin.

Sadly, one of the first progeny of this logical act was the EN450, a machine

that inspired one journo of the period to cry “my kingdom for a machete!”

Retrieving the situation, Kawasaki followed this by producing the amazingly successful GPZ500, which swiftly progressed from being one of the best middleweights of the era to a long-term cash cow.

Looking to maximise the potential of the motor, Kawasaki took what was then a bold move and produced the KLE500. Using a retuned engine designed for mid-range usability rather than top end power, Kawasaki delivered a very credible motor.

If the motor was still effectively half a GPZ900R then the bodywork was a mile away. Taking some general styling cues from Yamaha’s frankly loopy TDR250 and chucking them into the blender with things like their own Tengai KLR650 the factory delivered something very close to

what we now call an adventure motorcycle. With the small fairing and headlamp cover morphing into the tank, which blended in with the rear panel and seat, the looks were something quite different at the time but now we take them for granted.

What does now stand out is the colour schemes that were used, very shell suit, very 90s. How about purple panels and mauve seat? Perhaps maroon with pale blue or aquamarine saddle? Or how about teal panelwork with pink flashes and a purple perch?

Thankfully, other less garish options were available.

The bike offered a decent riding position and a comfortable ride providing you weren’t sitting on the pillion seat that sloped alarmingly.

The braced handlebars came with handguards as standard, offering a little weather protection and the easygoing nature of the motor made the bike a cinch to ride in traffic.

Perhaps not too surprisingly the KLE500 swiftly found favour with riders who’d recently passed their tests. Inevitable comparisons were swiftly made between the Kawasaki and Honda’s Transalp. In terms of outright quality the latter won hands down but the KLE generally came out tops on point and squirt riding.

Although both machines had some off road pretence, neither was especially adept when it came down to it, although the Kawasaki was generally considered to be the better of the pair.

Why would you want one today?

Well, they’re now quite rare and have a look like little else. Insurance is going to be silly cheap, as is their purchase price. Amazingly, £800 gets you a tidy runner, while a grand should deliver something really smart and a top-end low-mileage example is unlikely to go much over £1750.

Factor in an abundance of spares, both OEM and aftermarket and the bike becomes even more attractive. If you fancy something just a little bit different but still fun then a KLE500 might be just the bike you’ve been looking for.

Japan’s relationship with parallel middleweight twins has been as long as it has been capricious. Honda’s CB450 Black Bomber beat many British factories at their own game and in various guises the motor, hogged out to 500cc, went on for years. Yamaha’s best attempts at turning out a quarter litre four-stroke twin did their reputation little if any good. The original TX500 was something approaching flawed genius and the subsequent revised version, the XS500 was unfairly compared to the seminal and all

conquering RD400. One of the best of the genre has to be Suzuki’s GS400; a machine now overlooked and ignored but it was milestone for common sense and reliability. Kawasaki may have made a damn good fist of it with the GPZ and KLE 500 twins but its early offerings on a similar theme were less successful. Back in the day Bike magazine, when testing the then new Z400 twin, dressed a rider in a full clown outfit. Perhaps not too surprisingly the bike is not one of the world’s most desirable classics!

Triumph’s Thunderbird Storm The Thunderbird Storm is the stripped-back (I refrain from saying “sporting”) version of Triumph’s huge muscle-cruiser and has featured in the range since 2011.

The bike we tested was a 2012 model with 10,250 miles on the clock (pre-test) featuring a metallic black/purple fleck paint job.

Give me some spec

A huge 1,699cc parallel twin engine (putting out continent-shifting amounts of torque: 156 Nm/115 lb-ft at just 2,950rpm, with maximum power coming in at 96.9 bhp/72kW @ 5,200rpm) is held in a tubular steel, twin spine frame. Final drive comes via a toothed belt, with stopping provided by two 310mm, four-piston calliper brakes to the front, supported by a single 310mm, two piston calliper at the rear.

So what’s it like to ride?

Make no mistake, this is a big, heavy bike (340kg/746lbs, 2340mm long).

But it carries that weight very low and combined with the 702mm/27.6in seat height and wide bars it is easy to paddle around.

applied. Out on the road, the Thunderbird Storm is beautifully balanced. Pegs are in a forward setting, combined with the wide bars and tank you are wrapped round the tank, so steering comes courtesy of rolling from one corner to the next.

Steering is slow – as you’d expect with a bike of this size – but once leant over, the big Triumph inspires confidence. There is a long, constantcurve corner on the B road part of the ride on which I just kept leaning it further, gently increasing the power to the stage I was taking it at similar speeds to more sporting tackle.

The gearbox is silky smooth and precise. Not that you need it. Just pick a gear – any gear – and the Triumph will drive forward on a wave of torque from next to nothing. With a bike this

size it needs plenty of stopping power and the three 310mm discs do the job well, though like all cruisers a spot of advance planning is a good idea.

Townwork is easy, thanks to the great balance. Motorways? This engine eats them up and holding on is the main challenge. The big tank lets you cross continents, the firm but supportive saddle lets you cross them in comfort and the plush suspension

soaks up everything thrown at it without complaint.

I can’t ignore the sound. This massive engine puts out anything from a chug (it reminded me of a barge) to a rumble to a growl to a roar as you open up... absolutely superb.

What nick is it in?

Pristine. The build quality shines through, with nothing to report.

What’s it worth?

The dealer is looking for £8,999 for a 2012 bike with 10,500 miles on the clock with added Datatool alarm and “Hogslayer” exhaust. The dealer search showed this to be a good price, reflecting the miles on the clock with others available for similar age and miles ranging from £8,499 for a 2011 bike with 6,500 miles to £10,995 for a 2013 bike with just 600 miles recorded.
