King’s expert, Peter Miller, gives you his tips for growing perfect Sweet Peas
“Seed sowing can begin in October, through to late February, but I find the optimum time is early November. Sow 5 seeds into a 7.5cm (3”) deep pot, using a good growing medium.
Keep in a cold frame, do not let the soil dry out but do not over water. In my experience I have found that chipping and soaking the seeds is not necessary. When the plants have grown 3 pairs of true leaves, pinch out the tops to encourage side shoots for the promotion of greater flower production. Harden off, prior to planting out in early April, (weather permitting) and feed with foliage or soil dressing at fortnightly intervals. Direct sowings during October or March can also be made in the flowering site.”

Daffodils are one of the most recognised and cheery signs of Spring. The Yellow Trumpet variety of daffodils produces vibrant, eye-catching yellow flowers with classic star-shaped petals. Plant in September, in fertile, well-drained conditions with plenty of sun. They are happy in containers as well as in the ground, where they do best planted at a depth of three times the height of the bulb. They spend several months developing roots before they flower usually between February and May. There are two distinctive types of cultivated garlic. Softneck is easier to grow, has plenty of cloves and stores well. Hardneck produces fewer but larger cloves and because they have a thinner skin have a shorter shelf life. It also produces flower stalks as part of its natural growth.
Fifty wood plugs are the perfect way to inoculate a 1m hardwood log. Your first crop will come around 1 year later. After the initial flush, harvests can appear every 3-5 months, for up to 8 years in the cases of some mushroom varieties.
With a strong meaty flavour, the pink oyster mushroom is a great meat substitute that is high in protein and fibre. More resilient in the summer months, the brightly coloured caps will bring a cheerful addition to any kitchen or garden space.
