Jackson VanBrocklin Engineering Technology Major—Mechanical
Hi! My name is Jackson and I am from Forreston, IL and am in the mechanical engineering tech program. I will graduate in April 2020 and am excited about starting my career. I’m in my first year and am currently working a paid internship while I go to college . Why I chose Morrison Tech? I choose Morrison Tech because the Innovation Center would provide me with hands on learning, with the tools and equipment to bring my designs to life. The small class sizes are important to me. Having a staff that gets to know and care about you is very valuable. Fun fact about myself? I'm actually a certified Network technician but came here to expand my skill set in Mechanical engineering technology. Best advice for incoming students: Use the Innovation Center! You won't have many opportunities to use the level of equipment in there. Have personal projects lined up!!

Engineering Technology Major—Construction
Hello! I’m Alex, I’m from Rock Falls and am in my first year at Morrison. Why I chose Morrison Tech? I chose Morrison Tech because it was close to my family and my horse so it made staying in touch and visiting easier. Plus I really liked how small the school is and how close-knit all the kids are. It really makes focusing on school and getting help with class or anything a lot easier. Fun fact about myself? I lived in Africa for two months and volunteered at an orphanage and a school. That was pretty life-changing and I definitely want to go back. Best advice for incoming students? I’d say to get to know as many kids and teachers as soon as possible because everyone is super helpful and it’ll really make you get through the year a lot easier and you’ll have more fun.
You Asked...We Answered Q: Do you need high school classes that are in your field of study at Morrison Tech before you attend? A. My school didn’t really offer many classes for construction. They had a couple classes, but the majority of things I have at Morrison Institute of Technology has been new knowledge. You do not need to have classes in your field - the instructors take time with you to help out if needed. -J’Sondra Veracini Q: Why did you chose Morrison Tech and to transfer on? A: Morrison Tech stood out to me when I noticed that the school is very driven. It is also very condensed. That meant I did not have to take extra seemingly meaningless classes to get my degree, and can focus on the core of my interest. When I first came to Morrison Tech, I did not plan on transferring. However, with some thinking and talking with friends that are transferring as well, my view began to change. While Morrison has stupendous education programs and homey, family-like closeness within the student and staff body, I wanted to extend my knowledge and education to UW of Platteville. Platteville also has superb programs and the close community feel that I enjoy. As I mentioned before, the staff and student community is very close knit. For every one teacher in class, there are 15 to 20 students. That really helps if you are struggling or can get ahead compared to many other schools! Instructors are knowledgeable, accessible, and willing to help you succeed in what your goals are. It was a great place to start. -Sean Weir Q: What is dorm life like? A: Dorm life here is great. We do a lot here after hours of school. I have a group of 6 students that I have made close friends with. We like to cook a lot, and hold movie marathons. A lot of pool is played in our recreational building AKA The Barn. We play backyard sports and cook out when the weather is nice. Although, if you want to be alone, our dorms are apartment style dorms, so no need to feel cramped and enough space to put your belongings. A nice, chill place to hang out, play games, do homework, etc. -Sean Weir Dorm life is pretty good. I don’t have to drive to class. I don’t have to wake up extra early for traffic or long commute. You can walk down the hall to hangout with your friends, no driving. no walking outside in snow, rain, heat or cold. We have access to computers if we need them for classes. They generally place people with the same interests as roommates, which is good because you get along well. -J’Sondra Veracini Q. Why did you choose Morrison Tech? A: =I choose Morrison Tech because of their small size. But also because of their light but serious attitude when it comes to solving problems in today's engineering designing -Kendra Drury Q. What is it like to be a commuter at the college? A: =Honestly, it's a little bit of hassle. But the professors are so caring. They understand that I live a distance away and help me catch up when I miss a class. And the students also help me, by inviting me to school activities and helping me with subjects that I don't always understand. -Kendra Drury
Success Begins Here Matt Darby—Class of 2002
Upon graduation from Morrison Tech I completed a five year electrical apprenticeship and became a master electrician. I worked in industrial plants around the QUAD city IL area. After completing my apprenticeship I started working on my bachelors degree finishing in 2011. I decided to try something new but wanted to stay in the industry so I went to work for electrical wholesale distribution as an account manager. I worked in distribution until 2014 when I relocated closer to Chicago and took a job with ROCKWELL Automation. Morrison Tech was the right combination of book work and hands on training. The teachers were always helpful and the class sizes were small. and engaging. I help manage 20+ million worth of power and control product business across the greater Northern Il.
Attending Morrison Tech was an eye opening experience. It taught me things about myself I did not know. The teachers, advisors, staff and even the administration truly care for the well being of all students; both in education and their personal life. I met people through all areas of life that helped me broaden my horizon. I gained a lot of independence and grew more responsible while attending Morrison Tech. I felt prepared and comfortable taking the next step. Morrison Tech built and led me down a successful path. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to be the first high school and college graduate in my family.
Jose Perez —Class of 2018
I am currently a mechanical designer for Metso, Inc and have created schematics general arrangements (GA), assembled power units, made crusher improvements, repair drawings and work/manage TeamCenter (PDM) In my short career, I am a 2018 graduate, I have done much designing using Inventor. My drawings have been sent to mines all over the word, such as: Finland, Peru, China, Spain, Chile… In April 2019 I will be doing some field work in South Carolina. This is designed to teach me more about the products Metso offers. I have done many other projects that are deemed restricted and I am not allowed to discuss them.
Zachery Knapp—Class of 2009 Thank you for helping jump start my career in Civil Engineering! I couldn't have done it without the help from all the great teachers and classmates at Morrison Tech!
As a commuter I didn't get to spend much time with my fellow students outside of the classroom but nevertheless I had a great time going to school here. The teachers did a great job at preparing us for our careers. I have recommended Morrison Tech to a number of people and I would absolutely choose to go here again I've worked on quite a few exciting projects already. One project I worked on was modeling one of the largest subdivisions to be built in Davenport, Iowa. I have also worked on the first roundabout that is going in Davenport. I've also been working on integrating the use of Virtual Reality into our Architecture and Engineering workflows. I'm a Civil Designer at Shive-Hattery. The majority of my work is designing and modeling sites or roadways and creating construction drawings for various clients. I've also worked on obtaining and integrating the use of Virtual Reality into our company workflows.
Rise to the Top Keys to success in college Get Involved You’ll be amazed how quickly friendships are made in structured activities that provide “safe” opportunities to meet people and explore common interests.
Get out of Your Comfort Zone Matthew Kirgan remembers his first day at Morrison Tech. “Nobody at this school knows anything about me
besides my name. Well, time to step up or shut up. It’s time for me to step out of my comfort zone and meet new people make new friends. It’s time to be heard and not sit in the back quietly and passively. Because when it all comes down to it, risks can’t pay off unless you are willing to take them. So that’s just what I did. I took the chance. I was loud and took charge of projects all around campus. Now I don’t know if the group of people I call friends today would say the same back to me. But I’m glad I met every single one of you.”
The Student Government and The Student Ambassador Program are great ways to do this. Not into big commitments? How about organized kickball, softball, bowling, or volleyball?

A Career as a CAD Designer—Engineering Technology responsibilities of an Engineering Technician is the operation of a CAD program. They use sophisticated software to design 3 dimensional parts assembling them into complete products. There are many programs to choose from; Inventor, SolidWorks, NX, Creo... Each company chooses a program based on their needs, but the basics of creating the 3 dimensional models are very similar in every program. These 3D models are very important as they will be utilized to build the finished parts. Prototyping is a hands on task that many Technicians enjoy the most. If you’ve heard the term 3D printing, this would be what it was developed for. Using the CAD model, parts are sent to a machine that builds them using a variety of materials. These materials can be plastic, powdered metal or a hybrid combination of materials. A 3D printer will use this information to build the part one layer at a time. There are many other A two year degree in Engineering Technology with a specialization in Computer Aided Drafting & Design can methods used to build prototype parts: CNC lead to almost endless career opportunities.
