DEGRAZIA GALLERY IN THE SUN What started as a small construction project in the early 1950s developed into a 10-acre National Historic District designed and built by acclaimed Arizona artist Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia. The Gallery in the Sun is home to a colorful array of DeGrazia originals. There are six permanent collections of paintings that trace historical events and native cultures of the Southwest. Rotating exhibitions display some of the 15,000 DeGrazia originals housed at the gallery, including oils, watercolors, sketches, serigraphs, lithographs, sculptures, ceramics and jewelry. A consignment room displays DeGrazia originals available for purchase, while the gift shop offers a wide selection of reproductions. The grounds also include the Mission in the Sun, with its rock floors, interior murals and open-air roof. The mission was built in honor of Padre Kino and dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. We are open daily from 10am to 4pm.

More than 275 miniature dollhouses and room boxes are displayed inside (1) The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures, which is organized into three permanent exhibits: the Enchanted Realm, the History Gallery and the Exploring the World room. Tour through the 24-acre (2) Reid Park Zoo by foot or aboard the Reid Park Zoo express train to see more than 500 animals. And at the downtown location of the indoor climbing facility (3) Rocks & Ropes, children under 12 are invited to climb like monkeys every Sa and Su 9-11 am.

Spend an afternoon hiking the trails of (1) Saguaro National Park. The Rincon Mountains to Tucson’s east are more ecologically diverse, while the western Tucson Mountains contain hundreds of petroglyphs.

On (2) Mount Lemmon, cyclists test their legs pedaling up the Catalina Highway, hikers explore varied terrain and off-road adventure-seekers take to the “access road.” Two hours east of Tucson, explore a forest of rock spires eroded from layers of ash along 18 miles of hiking trails or a paved scenic driving route at (3) Chiricahua National Monument.

Discover a part of Tucson’s pueblo history at (1) Mission San Xavier del Bac. Built by Spanish Franciscans in the late 18th century, it is the oldest European building in the state and contains murals and statues from the time of its construction. At the (2) Titan Missile Museum, once a top-secret U.S. military site, learn about the missile’s technology and the role it played in the Cold War. An impressive collection of original U.S. Cavalry artifacts dating from the Civil War to 1943, the end of the mounted calvary, is found at the (3) Museum of the Horse Soldier.
