Hot days in the Valley of the Sun call for cool fun. Chill out and relax while tubing down the Salt River or taking a dip at a pool party. And when the heat is just too much, hop in your car and head out of town.

SOAK UP FUN Whether you’re a kid or a kid at heart, darting through water jets at a splash pad offers hours of cool fun.

Many of the major shopping destinations around town feature these water spots, including Scottsdale Quarter, Kierland Commons, Desert Ridge Marketplace, Tempe Marketplace, Westgate Entertainment Center and SanTan Village. Kids don a swimsuit and splash and run to their heart’s content. At Tempe Beach Park find a one-acre splash “park” complete with water slides and sand play areas, while at Phoenix Zoo (www.phoenix zoo.org) take a break from visiting the animals and run through the waterfall, explore a cavern or slide down a tree trunk from a tree house into a river. Newly opened this May: a small splash pad at The Orchard PHX (www.the orchardphx.com), a restaurant and marketplace concept. The pad sits near an ice cream and candy shop, making it perfect for a summer excursion.

TOTALLY TUBULAR For those who would rather lounge in the water than run through it, grab an inner tube and float down a river. Salt River Tubing (www.saltriver tubing.com) in Mesa offers

tube rentals and a shuttle bus service to the Salt River, where those ages 8+ can float through the Tonto National Forest. Various exit points along the river allow participants to choose when it’s time for dry land.

(Tip: Smart tubers bring a cooler filled with drinks and snacks, nestle it into a tube and use a rope to join that tube to theirs.)

GET ACTIVE Get your adrenaline pumping by staying active at these indoor spots. When the temps rise, head to Ice Den Scottsdale (www.coyotesice. com) and chill out on the ice rink. It often hosts NHL teams for practice and other events, but also has daily public skate times. Head over on a Friday night for a skate party featuring a live DJ and disco lights. ROAD TRIPS Head north to find some relief from the Valley’s high temps. Prescott was the first permanent capital of the Arizona Territory and is a great place for history buffs.

Meanwhile, the old buildings of Jerome offer a peek at life in Arizona during mining’s heyday—though a stay at the famous Jerome Grand Hotel (www.jeromegrand hotel.com) may provide a personal encounter with a past resident (it’s rumored to be haunted). In fact, the town as a whole is known as a ghost town. Travel north from Jerome to Sedona for the famed red rocks, New Age shops and dining destinations.

Summer is also the perfect time to make the trek to the Grand Canyon, a marvel stretching 277 miles from end to end and more than a mile down to the canyon’s floor—hike or raft through the canyon, take a helicopter tour, or simply visit and wonder at its size.

North or south? That’s the question. For those who prefer a trip north of the Valley, consider the small towns of (1) Pine and Strawberry, about a two-hour drive from Phoenix. Hiking trails and campgrounds are plentiful in the forested area, and the scenic Mogollon Rim is within close driving distance. Further north is the hipster college town of (2) Flagstaff.

The downtown area is full of charm with shops, eateries and breweries, and hiking trails are abundant in the Coconino National Forest—just remember you are now nearly 7,000 feet above sea level! And 2.5 hours south of Phoenix is (3) Sonoita, a wine growers’ region with mild summer temps.

Spend a day touring tasting rooms and taking in the vast, beautiful views of Southern Arizona.

For all of its designer stores and upscale eateries, there is plenty of budget-friendly fun to be had around the Valley of the Sun. Tour various areas of Scottsdale, including the popular spots in downtown, with the free (1) Scottsdale Trolley. Hop off and explore different local spots before catching the next one and continuing your journey. For a dose of culture, stop by (2) Phoenix Art Museum. The largest art museum in the Southwest offers free admission W 3-9 pm, First Fridays 6-10 pm and Second Sundays noon-5 pm (voluntary donations accepted). Find inner peace at three Valley (3) lululemon locations during weekly complimentary yoga classes.

Say ”om” at the Scottsdale Quarter, Biltmore Fashion Park and Chandler locations. All levels of skill are welcome.

For the Guys Begin with a sunrise hike up (1) Camelback Mountain, before the temps rise too high

during the summer months. The Echo Canyon trail on the west side of the mountain is steep and rocky, and will leave those who summit this beast feeling quite accomplished before 7 am. Spend the afternoon pushing the pedal to the metal around an indoor-outdoor, 1/3-mile track at (2) Octane Raceway. This go-kart track is no kids’ land—drivers must be 16 or older and it’s not uncommon to race a few extreme hobbyists. Once helmets are off, head down the street to (3) Topgolf Scottsdale at Riverwalk and choose from seven micro-chipped golf games. Order up some food and make a night of it, or venture over to the casino or Degree 270 nightclub at Talking Stick Resort to continue the fun.
