Q: How long have you been a concierge?

A: I have been a concierge for 10 years and my first position was at the Kahala Mandarin Oriental (now The Kahala Hotel & Resort). As a concierge, I believe it’s my responsibility to provide an authentic and sincere guest experience.

Q: Why did you become a concierge?

A: Like most hoteliers, I started at the Front Desk and navigated my way through the Front Office where I found my niche with the Concierge department. I find it fascinating to learn about different cultures while being able to share my own.

Q: What are your favorite area/places on O‘ahu?

A: My favorite places on O’ahu include the North Shore for its magical beaches and great local finds. One of my favorite stops while on the North Shore is Storto’s (Sandwich Shop) to pick up a sandwich for the beach.

Q: What type of experience(s) do you try to provide for your guests?

Even visitors who have been coming to Hawai‘i for years are surprised by the hidden gems we can offer. We know where to find the best breaks on the North Shore, the coolest shrimp shacks, incredible hikes along the Wai‘anae Range, epic ocean fishing expeditions, the most immersive cultural experiences and even the perfect place to propose.

Q: What do you recommend for the adventure-seeking visitor?

A: For the active traveler, the adventures on land and water are endless.

Nearby Kualoa Ranch—familiar to film buffs as the setting for the Jurassic Park series—offers horseback riding, mountain biking, ziplining and ATV riding through jungle terrain. On the water, whether one prefers to be on a board (surf, paddle) or in a boat (outrigger canoe, fishing vessel), Four Seasons has it covered. Fancy a bit of cliff jumping? We can arrange that too.

Q: What’s the most popular request you’ve received recently?

A: Some of the more popular requests have been among “Hawai’i Five-0” enthusiasts. After watching the series, they are interested in visiting locations where the filming was done. Recently, I had one guest who had a full list categorized by episode and he was determined to visit each one before leaving.

Q: What’s your must-have or must-do before leaving O’ahu?

A: My recommendation for any visitor would be to soak in a sunset. The sunsets here are some of the most beautiful in the world.

Historic Moment Themed, “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor marks a somber period that we should never forget. In a proclamation to recognize Pearl Harbor, Hawai‘i Gov. David Ige eloquently stated, “The December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and other airfields on the island of O‘ahu, led directly to our country’s entry into WWII. Those events changed our lives forever and triggered our resolve as a nation, our can-do attitude and an unmatched commitment to the defense of freedom.”

GALA AFFAIR As part of Pearl Harbor and in honor of its 10th anniversary, the Pacific Aviation Museum will be the site of the opening ceremonies on December 3. The evening will include cocktails, dinner, entertainment and an auction.

Before continuing to Hale’iwa Town, be sure to stop at Dole Plantation, which houses the “World’s Largest Maze” according to the 2008 Guinness Book of World Records.

Surf’s Up! The fabled seven miles of the North Shore include Sunset Beach, ’Ehukai (Bonzai Pipeline), Waimea Bay and Hale‘iwa Beach Park, which are several of the most reputed surfing spots in the world. Winter surf can be treacherous and legendary, so use caution and consult with the lifeguard on duty before entering the water. The historic Hale‘iwa Town is lined with boho-chic boutiques, ethnic restaurants and, of course, surf shops. waters, powdered-sugar sands and swaying palms rank this Windward beach among some of the best in the world. Sheltered by a wide, protective offshore reef, this half-mile strand of beach provides ideal swimming conditions, as well as kayaking, outrigger canoeing, sailing, surfing and windsurf-

ing. During the weekdays, the beach is relatively calm, but on weekends it can become extremely crowded. With the twin Mokulua Islands in the distance (both are seabird sanctuaries), Lanikai Beach truly lives up to its translated name of “heavenly sea.”

Public Transportation THEBUS An easy, cost-effective, and

environmentally-friendly way to get around the island is via TheBus, the island’s award-winning public transportation system. Many routes depart frequently from Waikiki and stop at Oahu’s major attractions. Fares are the following: adults 17 and over: $2.50 each way, seniors 65+ and people with disability: $1 each way, youths ages 6-17, $1.25 each way. Each trip allows for one transfer. Visitors may also want to consider buying the four-day pass at $25 at ABC Stores and 7-Eleven stores.
