We can’t move our gaze from the spinning disks in the dresses of these chorus girls, created by Los Angeles-based artist Frances Stark. A

destination for art-lovers since 1936, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston began growing its permanent collection only after moving to its bigger-and-better, now iconic waterfront home from a tiny spot in the Back Bay just 10 years ago.

On the heels of this milestone anniversary, the ICA celebrates this fall with an exhibition that highlights more than 100 significant pieces from its permanent collection. “First Light: A Decade of Collecting at the ICA” runs August 17 through January 16 and recounts the museum’s most recent phase and collecting history.

“We hope to offer many tales within one exhibition,” says Eva Respini, the ICA’s Barbara Lee Chief Curator and “First Light” lead curator.

“The past 10 years have offered many different things to many different people—from thought-provoking exhibitions to aweinspiring performances, enriching educational programs, and glorious views of our rapidly changing city. The ICA is a platform for engage-

Ideally this exhibition shows just how multifaceted such a platform has been and continues to be.”

Occupying the museum’s east galleries with thematic, artist-specific and historical sections, “First Light” encourages museum goers to feast their eyes on works by such world-class contemporary artists as Louise Bourgeois, Nick Cave, Paul Chan, Marlene Dumas, Eva Hesse and Cindy Sherman.

“Visitors can expect an array of experiences,” says Respini. “We developed smaller shows—or “chapters” as we refer to them.

Some [focus] on a single artist; others examine themes like appropriation or the domestic sphere; and others look closely at media.”

Favorites from the permanent collection include Cornelia Parker’s “Hanging Fire” and Chan’s “1st Light.” Bourgeois, Nan Goldin and Rineke Dijkstra may also be familiar because the ICA has organized major solo exhibitions of these artists’ work in the past.

A major installation by Kara Walker combines cut paper silhouettes with framed drawings and paintings to create a 48-foot frieze examining classic American novel “Huck Finn.”

A multimedia web platform adds an even more modern approach, featuring curator writings, voices of those who have built the museum’s collection, and archival materials including video recordings and publications.

The Freedom Trail BUNKER HILL MONUMENT— One of Boston’s most

iconic sights is, ironically, a misnomer: the Bunker Hill Monument actually sits atop Breed’s Hill, where the American Revolution’s Battle of Bunker Hill took place in 1775. The ill-equipped colonists were ultimately defeated in battle, but caused considerable damage to British forces. The towering, 221foot obelisk is a reminder of these patriots’ bravery.

Faneuil had this building constructed in 1742 and gave it to the city of Boston. Munch it, dip it, drink it: Nothing prepares one for the chocolate gorging that takes place at fall-to-spring Saturday ritual Chocolate Bar at The Langham, Boston (1). Stocked with ‘fresh’ vendors from around the state, Boston Public Market is the Financial District’s go-to spot for lunch or afternoon ice cream/doughnut/insert your snack vice here. At dinnertime, Tim Cushman’s nine-year-old Leather District restaurant O Ya (2) is hot—and totally worthy of its praise and price tags. Across town, art, design and Victorian architecture may be hallmarks of the diverse South End (3), but so is food. For music lovers, renowned chorus and orchestra Handel & Haydn Society (1) presents works played on instruments contemporary with the time of its composition. Meaning, you’ll hear Bach’s Magnificat in much the same style as Bach himself would have. Club Passim (2) heartily cultivates homegrown singer-songwriters, and this goes back to the 1960s when Joan Baez rocked this stage.
