Q: What’s the best thing about Sydney in August?

A: In August winter begins to lose its chill with warmer sunny afternoons. The Annual Northern Whale migration reaches its crescendo with a record 29,000 whales this season!

These majestic creatures can be best viewed from whale watching cruises; seeing a pod of 45 tonne humpback whales soaring through the air metres from your boat is an incredible sight!

Q: What’s your best advice for a first-time visitor to Sydney?

A: Two words…Blue Mountains. Take a guided tour and view one million hectares of one of Australia’s natural wonders that is the Blue Mountains.

Explore its diverse mix of blue-hazed valleys and the golden sandstone escarpments of the Jamison, Grose and Megalong Valleys and ride the worlds steepest railway. Visit Featherdale Wildlife Park on the way to feed kangaroos and get photos with koalas.

Q: What’s your favourite pub/bar to visit during winter?

A: Built by convicts from sandstone, the Hero of Waterloo in The Rocks is a nice way to escape the

colds of winter in front a cosy fireplace to relax and enjoy a few pints at the bar or try some fine Australian pub cuisine in their restaurant.

Q: What is a great day trip destination to head to from the city?

A: Apart from my beloved Blue Mountains…! The remote Bungonia Wilderness Area in the Southern Highlands is an amazing day trip. The Bungonia Lookdown lookout offers superb views over the Shoalhaven Canyon and if you are lucky you may see a base jumper jump off the limestone cliff face!

There are many caves to explore and many hiking opportunities, the area is quite rugged with kangaroos, goats in good number and on the way back the quaint town of Bowral has some great cafés and shops to explore.

A NEW EXHIBITION at the Art Gallery of

New South Wales explores the work of John Russell, Australia’s French Impressionist. It is the first major survey of Russell’s work in 40 years and brings together 120 paintings, drawings and watercolours, drawn from the Art Gallery of NSW collection and from private and public collections around the world including the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Russell’s unique engagement with French art in the 1880s and 1890s led to his painting in a pure French impressionist style and forming close friendships with the leading artists in Paris, including Vincent van Gogh and Auguste Rodin.

AN OUTSTANDING EXHIBITION of indigenous art is now on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA). “John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new” is the first major survey of works by one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, master bark painter John Mawurndjul. He is celebrated for his mastery of rarrk (cross-hatching) and his depiction of djang (sacred sites), a tradition shared by generations of Kuninjku artists.

Bark paintings and sculptures drawn from private and public collections across the world tell the stories of Kuninjku culture and the significant locations surrounding the artist’s home in central north Arnhem Land.

Born in 1952, Mawurndjul lives and works in Milmilngkan in western Arnhem Land and Maningrida in central north Arnhem Land. Since his first exhibition in 1980, he has become one of Australia’s most widely recognised artists. In 1989 his work was included in the ground-breaking exhibition Magiciens de la Terre at the Centre Georges Pompidou and Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris, and his works

have been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia, America, Germany and Japan. In 2018 he received the highly prestigious Red Ochre Award at the Australia Council for the Arts, National Indigenous Art Awards, for his outstanding lifetime achievement in the arts.

The collections of the MCA and Art Gallery of South Australia form the genesis of the exhibition. Two barks— Nawarramulmul (Shooting Star Spirit) and Ngalyod (Female Rainbow Serpent) (both 1988) were the first artworks accessioned into the newly-incorporated MCA Collection in 1989; and Namanjwarre, Saltwater Crocodile (also from 1988) is a cornerstone piece from the Art Gallery of South Australia Collection, representing a watershed moment in the evolution of the artist’s aesthetic.

Before lunch, make your way to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) where you can catch a glimpse of some of the best Australian contemporary art around. The MCA is located on Sydney’s Circular Quay, so you can take some snapshots of Sydney’s most famous monuments, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, whilst you are there.

AFTERNOON Whilst down by the harbour hop on over to the historic Rocks district for lunch and stop by Saké Restaurant and Bar for the best in modern Japanese. For something quick and easy with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options you can’t go past The Fine Food Store. If you fancy some of Sydney’s unsurpassed seafood, Quay has you sorted.

As its prime whale watching season why not take a fabulous cruise on Sydney Harbour and beyond to try and spot one of the oceans most majestic creatures. Drive in style for a weekend getaway to Sydney’s Southern Highlands.

A DRIVE ALONG SYDNEY’S south coast provides the perfect start for a scenic and cruisy weekend escape to the Southern Highlands, just under two hours out from the city centre. Featuring some of Sydney’s best artisanal products and diverse landscapes from coastal vistas to moody rainforest, there is plenty to do and even more to eat! Why not pick up a luxurious BMW from Avis’s new Drive in Style range and get set to hit the road (avis.com).

Heading out from Sydney’s centre follow the signs to Wollongong and begin heading south. Head past Wollongong, take a right at Albion Park and follow signs to Macquarie Pass National Park.

Located at the foothills of the Jamberoo Valley, Minnamurra Rainforest is the perfect place to take in one of Australia’s most unique ecosystems. There are a number of walks that depart from the visitor centre

along elevated walkways as well as plenty of picnic stops. If you are lucky, you might spot some of the local wildlife including the cheeky lyrebird or adorable swamp wallaby.

Continue up to Robertson along the winding mountain pass, a delight to drive, which offers alternate views of the coast and foggy forest nooks. If you fancy a midmorning snack there is no place better than Robertson’s famous pie shop. This place is the real deal. Grab a classic Aussie meat pie or opt for a freshly baked apple turnover with cream.

A cruise through the town of Robertson offers the perfect opportunity to collect all you need for a gourmet picnic spread. The Robertson Old Cheese Factory sells a lavish selection of local and imported cheeses, ice cream and homemade relishes. There is also a café on site open for breakfast and lunch, boasting a view of Robertson’s lush green

countryside and a couple of local stores to peruse through for thoughtful handmade gifts. A peep at the Robertson Big Potato is a must whilst you are in town.

If picnics aren’t your thing then high tea at the historical Robertson Hotel is a delight. After a few choice treats don’t forget to soak up the stunning ocean views and explore the 14 acres of sprawling gardens.

A mere five minutes from Robertson, Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures has plenty to do and see.

The Treetop Walk takes in panoramic views of the native rainforest at heights of nearly 50 metres above the forest floor. For the adventurous, there is an exciting zipline tour.

Most importantly however, do go chasing waterfalls! Just a short drive from Robertson, and a brief detour from

the main tourist drive, are three stunning waterfalls. Fitzroy Falls are best viewed on a clear day and feature a breathtaking 81 metre drop. The visitor centre has a number of displays on Aboriginal culture, wildlife and birdwatching and is worth a look to further explore the remarkable history and nature of Australia. Carrington Falls and Belmore Falls also offer lookouts with fabulous vantage points.

Continue your drive on to Kangaroo Valley, but make sure to stop off at Grandpa’s Shed on the way, a perfectly jam packed antique store, to try your luck at treasure hunting.

Kangaroo River flows through the peaceful Kangaroo Valley and is home to a charming village town. You could easily spend the whole weekend here with plenty to do from wine tasting to kayaking. There are loads of options if you wish to spend the night from luxurious spa retreats to quaint holiday cottages. The village is well suited for guests and has a number of fine artisanal stores and galleries to visit including Kangaroo Valley Woodcrafts, Galeria Aniela, K. V. Forge and The Nostalgia Factory. No visit is complete without a stop at Kangaroo Valley Fudge House. Finally, The Friendly Inn Hotel is the perfect place to refuel for your trip home!

SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR HAS pretty much seen it all since then Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. Fire from the Outback Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.

CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment.

While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback of Australia across

three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul.

The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified.

In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours.

Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum.

There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland.

Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found.

The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes exactly what miners still do today—live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined.

The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value.

Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare.

Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form.

If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting.

There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year.

The Museum of Sydney is on the site of Australia’s first Government House, built in 1788 by NSW’s first Governor, Captain Arthur Phillip.
