n Jan. 17, 1988, I was onboard the USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) as we pulled out of Pearl Harbor and set sail for home in San Diego, California. On the radio, my shipmates and I heard my favorite team, the Washington Redskins, hold on for a thrilling last-second win in the NFC Championship Game. That meant they would be heading to the Super Bowl in San Diego. With a week transit across the Pacific, I would be there to see the biggest game of the year— possibly in person.

There were tickets to be had—above face price of course.

Regrettably, I didn’t shell out some money—I seem to recall I could have gotten an end zone seat for $300. I doubt a young sailor could fork out the kind of money that would be asked of him or her today.

The saving grace back in 1988 was that as the host city, San Diego was hopping and there were always events happening. And sailors are not averse to a party atmosphere.

Whether or not you attend the Super Bowl, you’ll have the chance to get out and feel the excitement that a Super Bowl game brings, and participate in the myriad events that will take place in the Miami area leading up to Feb. 2. Join us to discover the best celebrations.

things that make it so special. I can easily name my Top 3: The multicultural hub it is, is definitely what I love the most. But also, I have to mention the two most beloved Miami features by the great majority, including me: the weather and the beaches.

Wynwood Walls gate entrance, but also think the Colony Hotel on Ocean Drive is the quintessential example of Art Deco style that goes hand-in-hand with the [Wynwood] Walls gate.

JAN. 25-FEB. 1: SUPER BOWL LIVE, BAYFRONT PARK This weeklong fan fest is free for all ages. It features a Huddle Down Community Stage, Road to the 11th, Tailgate Town featuring the Culinary Stage, water shows, evening parades, fireworks and more.

The Huddle Down Community Stage will showcase a wide array of local talent that celebrates the culture and diversity of Miami. Music, dance and visual art performances take place daily; performers span every age range from elementary to college musicians to professional groups; The Road to the 11th is an oversized AstroTurf football field that serves as the grand entrance to Super Bowl LIVE and displays moments from the past 10 Super Bowls hosted in Miami; Tailgate Town features the Culinary Stage, which guides you through the sounds and smells of a true tailgate. Celebrity chefs are on hand for an epic pre-game experience, where tailgating and games in can be found in a family friendly area. Local and national chefs will compete with NFL talent for the title of “Best Dish”; A spectacular display of water stunts make up the Water Show.

This personal watercraft stunt and freestyle showcases a series of aerial tricks and dizzying backflips on jet skis, fly boards and water jetpacks. Members of this demonstration team have performed the world round, including China, Australia, Japan, Dubai, France and South America. It all takes place in beautiful Biscayne Bay; The Super Bowl LIVE Evening Parades feature more than 100 performers on Friday and Saturday night. This spicy Miami-style parade is full of rhythm and diversity, with a special nod to the NFL’s 100th season. Following the parade and accompanying concerts, Biscayne Bay will light up in a spectacular firework show illuminating the sky over Super Bowl LIVE.

Participate in myriad immersive exhibits at this interactive theme park.

Take photos with the Vince Lombardi Trophy, participate in free autograph sessions with NFL players and get an up-close look at all 53 Super Bowl rings. There are also youth clinics and virtual reality experiences.

JAN. 27: SUPER BOWL OPENING NIGHT, MARLINS PARK The national kick-off to Super Bowl festivities, Opening Night is the first public appearance by Super Bowl players and coaches after arriving in Miami. It is the only time both teams will be in the same location before the Big Game. Doors open at 5 pm. NFC team interview session: 7 pm; AFC team interview session: 9 pm. $25.

JAN. 30: 21ST ANNUAL SUPER BOWL GOSPEL CELEBRATION, JAMES L. KNIGHT CENTER This celebration first began 20 years ago, in Miami, at Super Bowl XXXIII. It is the only gospel concert sanctioned by the NFL, and will be taped in front of a live audience for BET. NFL players and Grammy Award-winning mainstream and gospel/contemporary Christian artists are set to take the stage.

FEB. 1: TASTE OF THE NFL: PARTY WITH A PURPOSE, BROWARD COUNTY CONVENTION CENTER Join Don Shula, Andrew Zimmern and Adam Richman for signature dishes from 32 of America’s best chefs as they work together to help kick hunger.
