Q: If you had one day in Melbourne, what would you do?

A: I’d start with breakfast in one of Melbourne’s buzzing laneways then take a stroll across the Yarra River to the Alexandra and Botanical Gardens.

The Kings Domain waterfall makes you forget the concrete jungle is just metres away! I’d then head to the Queen Victoria Market for lunch.

A shop called Dragos makes great bureks at great value!

I’d finish at a rooftop bar overlooking this magnificent city.

Q: What are some lesser-known galleries in Melbourne you’d recommend visiting?

Festival. I love checking out a flick then discussing it in one of Melbourne’s bars.

Berlin Bar serve up some brilliant cocktails, as does 1806.

Q: Where is the best place to get an authentic souvenir?

A: There are often ‘pop-up’ galleries in Melbourne that weren’t there a week ago, but I think the city’s everchanging street art is something to behold.

Laneways like AC/DC Lane and Hosier Lane are great starting points, and areas like Brunswick Street and Smith Street are great for pop-ups.

A: Australian By Design in the Block Arcade has some great pieces. Jonas at Lightning Ridge Opal Mines on Elizabeth Street will help you find gorgeous jewellery and introduce you to his eight-legged and slithering friends.

Q: What is your favourite thing to do as the weather gets colder?

A: The Grampians is a favourite. There is something about hiking trails in the clean bush air and seeing kangaroos in the wild that never grows old!

In the Land of Drought German artist and filmmaker Julian Rosefeldt is known for dancing on the edge of darkness and beauty. In his solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, “In the Land of Drought”, he turns his meticulous cinematic eye to the devastating effects of human-generated climate change, summoning up a dystopian world in which humanity has made itself extinct and only archeological artefacts remain to litter the landscape. Imaginary yet all too real, this series of moving image artworks was shot entirely by drone in Germany and Morocco, and pitches saturated colour alongside harrowing images of barrenness.

Tom Nicholson: Public Meeting Tom Nicholson is one of Australia's most internationally prominent artists—having participated in exhibitions throughout Asia, Europe and the Middle East—and yet "Tom Nicholson: Public Meeting" is the first large-scale exhibiton to survey the artist's practice. Alive with wit and bristling with talent, the Melbourne Theatre Company production of “Heisenberg” tackles the Heisenberg Uncertainty Theory through the lens of romantic comedy. The play follows the story of 42-year-old American, Georgie, who kisses the neck of a stranger at a train station and thrusts the two into an unconventional and fascinating relationship. Written by Tony Award-winner Simon Stephens and starring Australian screen darling, Kat Stewart.

WAKE IN FRIGHT A harrowing Australian horror on stage.

There is a particular style of Australian horror that you can feel in the flesh. Slowmoving, tense and psychologically savage, “Wake in Fright” is a classic of this genre, with its harsh landscapes matched against the emotional brutality of its characters.

Based on the novel by Kenneth Cook, this stage adaptation by Damien Greene brings the remote outback outpost of Yabba to life, with all its pent up frustrations and their violent resolutions.

In a breathtaking juxtaposition of Chinese art ancient and modern, the National Gallery of Victoria presents China’s Terracotta Warriors alongside new work from one of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists. By Kirsty Sier Much of ancient art sits at a crossroads between the classifications of art and archaeology. China’s famed Terracotta Warriors—the thousands of terracotta sculptures that depict the armies of Qin Shi Huang, initially created to protect the first Emperor of China in his afterlife and rediscovered in 1974 by archaeologists— are widely considered the eighth wonder of the world.

They are also one of the oldest known examples of an artistic masterpiece.

This year, eight of these Terracotta Warriors will visit Melbourne as part of the National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) Winter Masterpieces exhibition series, alongside two life-size horses from the Imperial Army

and two half-size replica bronze chariots, each drawn by four horses.

An incredible spectacle in their own right, these ancient treasures will be further contextualised by a series of artefacts loaned from museums and archaeological sites around China’s Shaanxi province, where the entombed Terracotta Warriors were discovered. More than 150 historic artefacts—including priceless works of gold, bronze and jade dating from the Western Zhou through to the Han dynasties (1046BC– 220AD)—will together form a precious display of Chinese history and culture unprecedented in Australia.

This exhibition is literally a priceless experience.

Winter of Warriors

Rather than exhibiting these artefacts as if in a time-capsule, NGV Winter Masterpieces opens a dialogue between past and present through a parallel presentation of work by Cai Guo-Qiang, one of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists. Fusing enduring eastern philosophies with elaborate modern displays, Guo-Qiang has created immersive environments for this Melbourne exhibition—such as a ceiling strung with 10,000 suspended porcelain birds, and a monumental sculpture of porcelain peonies sitting at the centre of 360-degree gunpowder drawing.

Bridging ancient history and contemporary culture, this year the Winter Masterpieces Exhibition builds on its reputation as a not-tomiss annual show. Founded in 2011, previous exhibitions to have brightened the mid-winter cold include a comprehensive body of Vincent van Gogh’s seasons paintings; an exhibition

featuring more than 200 works from French Impressionist Edgar Degas; and the world-renowned collection of Catherine the Great compiled from The Hermitage in St Petersburg.

While these previous incarnations of NGV Winter Masterpieces were all heavy-hitting, comprehensive and global, the 2019 exhibition is set to be the biggest yet in a number of ways.

These two complementary exhibitions are sights to behold, especially when seen together. GuoQiang has worked with the NGV on the curation of both exhibitions, transforming the gallery space into a spectacular immersive landscape where art is not confined to canvases: it hangs from the ceiling, it is splashed across walls, rises up from the floor and explodes in plumes of smoke (at least, it did when Cai Guo-Qiang set his gunpowder artwork alight for the premiere).

Over the years, the NGV has solidified its reputation as one of the most exciting galleries in the country, consistently pushing the meaning of what it means to exhibit art to the public—from full-scale architectural models erected in their back courtyard, to after-dark events, to civilisationspanning exhibitions such as this one. A staple of any Melbourne itinerary, this winter a visit to Victoria’s premier art gallery is something not to be missed.

Sights Turtle Debut at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium Two new flatback turtles—Thorpey and Moana—have arrived at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, where they are acting as ambassadors for their species. At present, the magnificent flatback turtle faces countless threats to its survival—as with most species of turtle, which are now majorly classified as either threatened or endangered due to plastic pollution, bycatch and coastal development.
