Q: What are your top three must-do sights for the first-time visitor to Melbourne?

A: Start your trip off with a ride on Melbourne’s iconic City Circle tram. This gives you a great chance to get a great orientation of the city. Afterwards stop and explore Melbourne’s laneways, looking at the great street art and enjoying a coffee. Going up Melbourne’s tallest building the Eureka Tower late at night and watching the sunset over Melbourne.

Q: What’s an undiscovered gem that a seasoned visitor to Melbourne might enjoy?

A: Hidden in the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens is Punting on the Lake. These traditional punts are a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon enjoying the lake and getting up close to the wildlife and the beautiful plants of the gardens.

Q: What do you consider the city’s best photo op?

A: Take a photo in Hosier Lane, which is a beautiful cobblestone laneway in the city and boasts Melbourne’s most photogenic street art.

Q: What’s one of your favourite restaurants in the city for a good, hearty meal?

A: The Deck located on the Yarra River in Southbank is a great place to head for a fantastic meal. With its modern European menu it also boasts some great views of Melbourne’s skyline.

Q: Where’s the best place to head on a cold Melbourne winter’s day?

A: Melbourne has some fantastic museums that are great to explore while the weather is temperamental. My favourite is the National Sports Museum located under the MCG, where you also have a chance to do a tour of the home of sport in Australia.

Don’t miss the fabulous 2018 Melbourne International Jazz Festival. It’s a 10-day celebration of jazz in all its forms with over 100 events featuring more than 400 Australian, international and emerging artists, taking place in 26 venues across Melbourne ranging from the world-class Hamer Hall to intimate jazz clubs, plus vibrant café gigs in Melbourne’s west and free festival community events. This year’s program offers a diversity of experiences and showcases many outstanding Australian artists, with new projects from leading local artists.

BRING IT ON THE MUSICAL Experience this Broadway hit musical.

The musical version of the iconic comedy film, “Bring It On”, has its Australian professional premiere this month in Melbourne. This hit Broadway musical tells the story of two cheerleading squads who are trying to claim the title at the National Cheerleading Championships. It’s a riotous look in the cheerleading world with an original story by Tony Award winner Jeff Whitty (“Avenue Q”), music and lyrics by Tony Award winning composer, Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”), music by Pulitzer and Tony Award winning composer, Tom Kitt and lyrics by Broadway lyricist, Amanda Green. “Bring It On The Musical” boasts a standout cast, selected from over 500 professional dancers, singers and cheerleaders, displaying not only musical talent but a great physical strength and agility.

MELBOURNE IS PROVING YET again that it is the cultural capital of Australia with a world-class offering of exhibitions this winter. You can learn how Mahatma Gandhi’s migrant experience shaped who he would become at the Immigration Museum, or discover the roles and differences of Melbourne’s multicultural grandmothers. Literary fans can see Lewis Carroll’s incredible influence on film at ACMI, while art aficionados get a taste of New York’s beloved MoMA in a new major exhibition at the NGV.

MAHATMA GANDHI: AN IMMIGRANT Melbourne’s Immigration Museum presents a new, immensely enriching digital interactive exhibition about Mahatma Gandhi. “Mahatma Gandhi: An Immigrant” looks at Gandhi’s years as a migrant in South Africa and the methods of non-violent resistance he developed during this time. This incredible exhibition is curated from more than 1,000 photographs, plus rarely seen archival footage, inspiring voice recordings of speeches and other objects on loan from the Mahatma Gandhi Digital Museum in Hyderabad, India. These items are

displayed alongside historical and cultural artefacts rarely exhibited in Australia from Museums Victoria’s permanent collection which reflect the human diversity of Gandhi’s India, dating back more than 150 years. Included in the items from Museums Victoria’s collection are a selection of traditional Indian clay figures dating from 1860s and 1880s which were displayed in the Indian Court at the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition at the Royal Exhibition Building.

“Mahatma Gandhi: An Immigrant” explores key events that served as turning points in Gandhi’s life, and subsequently awakened him to the fight against social injustice. Behind this fight is a complex man whose time in South Africa was a period of particular personal transformation. The discrimination he faced led to learnings that influenced both Gandhi as a person, and India more broadly.

GRANDMOTHERS Multicultural Museums Victoria (MMV) has launched its inaugural project, “Grandmothers”. The MMV is a network of museums, including the Chinese Museum, Co.As.It Italian Historical Society & Museo Italiano, Hellenic Museum, Islamic Museum of Australia and Jewish Museum of Australia, which collaborates to share their heritage, culture, art and experience.

The theme of the ‘grandmothers’ project, is universal: everyone has a grandmother, and grandmothers play a significant role in various ways in so many cultures. Within the exhibitions you will explore cultural difference, and develop intercultural interaction, understanding and appreciation.

From the Jewish Museum of Australia in St Kilda to the Museo Italiano in Carlton, the Hellenic Museum and Chinese Museum in the CBD to the Islamic Museum of Australia in Thornbury, the exhibitions are a celebration of the women in our society who we rarely hear from and rarely see in such a public setting.

MOMA AT NGV: 130 YEARS OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART Artworks from New York’s iconic Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) come to Melbourne this month in a brand-new exhibition, “MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art”. Co-organised by the NGV and MoMA, the exhibition features more than 200 works, some of which are making their debut showing in Australia.

As you would expect from the likes of MoMA, the artists featured in this exhibition read like a who’s who of modern art. See works by Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse,

Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dalí, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Louise Bourgeois, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Diane Arbus, Agnes Martin and Andy Warhol. Plus see works by contemporary artists like Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Olafur Eliasson, Andreas Gursky, El Anatsui, Rineke Dijkstra, Kara Walker, Mona Hatoum and Camille Henrot.

“MoMA at NGV” will explore the emergence and development of major art movements, and represent more than 130 years of radical artistic innovation. The exhibition will also reflect the wider technological, social and political developments that transformed society during this period, from late nineteenth century urban and industrial transformation, through to the digital and global present.

Key works from the exhibition include Salvador Dali’s painting “The persistence of memory”, Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn Monroe” screenprints and Marcel Duchamp’s readymade “Bicycle wheel”.

On 9 June, Glenn D. Lowry, Director of The Museum Of Modern Art, will present a talk on “Rethinking the Modern”. He’ll discuss how MoMA has changed since its founding in 1929 and what the museum needs to do to remain a leader in the field over the coming years. Learn more about the exhibition with “Curator’s Perspectives” on 10 June. NGV Senior Curator Miranda Wallace will discuss some of the key works from the exhibition.

NGV Friday Nights returns this month with exclusive late-night access to “MoMA at NGV” alongside a line-up of international and home-grown musical acts. On 15 June catch Australia’s Cookin’ On 3 Burners performing with songstress Stella Angelico, followed by a performance of Simone Forti’s seminal piece “Huddle”, presented

by Dance and Theatre students from the Victorian College of the Arts at The University of Melbourne.

On 29 June, internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Joe Chindamo and leading Australian classical violinist Zoë Black play together, followed once again

by Simone Forti’s seminal performance piece “Huddle”.

WONDERLAND Fall down the rabbit hole and explore everything Alice at ACMI’s “Wonderland” exhibition. The exhibition, which is part of the Victorian Government’s Winter Masterpieces series, celebrates the various cinematic adventures of Lewis Carroll’s works. Carroll is famous for his “Alice” stories, which include “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There”.

Melbourne’s ACMI (The Australian Centre for the Moving Image) has created this entirely original exhibition. Their team has made an immersive experience complete with playful environments and bespoke digital activities that draw upon the wonder and curiosity of Carroll’s stories.

Alice has been used in optical toys to silent film, animation, puppetry, live-action cinema, videogames, CGI, 3D and beyond.

Within “Wonderland” you will see how Alice and her stories have been seen over the years, and their reinvention in contemporary contexts and mediums.

As you enter Lewis Carroll’s drawing room, you will be handed your own Lost Map of Wonderland, which is a physical and digital device that unlocks surprising experiences during throughout the exhibition. Wander the world of Wonderland and enjoy playing at the Queen’s Croquet Ground and taking part in a magical Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

Discover more than 300 unique objects sourced from all around the world including first edition publications and illustrations, magic lantern projectors, concept drawings, animation cels, spectacular costumes, puppets, props and more.

Descend to the depths of Bendigo’s underworld at Central Deborah Gold Mine, where you’ll discover the importance of Bendigo’s gold mining history. Central Deborah Gold Mine was one of the last two commercial mines to cease operation in the wealthy Bendigo goldfields, operating for just 15 years between 1939 and 1954.

Take the 75-minute Mine Experience tour, and you’ll get to don a hard hat and miner’s lamp, descend 61 metres beneath the surface and be guided through a maze of tunnels to see what mining was like during the harsh gold rush era.

ECHUCA MOAMA Visit the famed Echuca Moama region and see abandoned steamboats and barges, tall red gum wharfs and beautiful old station homesteads.

The riverboat days were glorious times for Echuca— until a great depression hit in the 1890s. As the railways were extended and road transport improved, the river trade declined and the old wharf, built in 1865, was defunct by the 1920s.

Today the nostalgic whistle is still a familiar sound, as the wharf is home to the world’s largest fleet of operating riverboats, with cruises running throughout the day. Echuca’s other star attraction is the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, where you can step back in time to 1860 and relive the authentic steam port, explore the revitalised wharf and watch the steam driven saw mill in operation.
