Q: Describe your perfect Melbourne Day.

A: My perfect day in Melbourne would involve exploring the city’s famous laneways. I would start with a coffee at one of the many cafés on Degraves Street or Centre Place before strolling through the historic Block Arcade, followed by the Royal Arcade. To end the day I would head to Southgate and hop on the Garden Cruise to take in the city sights and views of the Royal Botanic Gardens by boat along the Yarra River.

Q: What is your favourite museum and why?

A: My favourite would have to be the Fox Collection Classic Car Museum as I am a motoring enthusiast.

It is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 2pm and on Saturday from 10am to 1pm.

The collection features more than 50 classic vehicles owned by Melbourne business icon and billionaire Mr Lindsay Fox. Q: With cool weather outside, what’s a great indoor activity for visitors to try?

A: You have heard of high tea but have you heard of High Cheese? This winter The Westin Melbourne have collaborated with Prahran’s cheese experts

It features more than 200 works from the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Louise Bourgeois, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Diane Arbus, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman and many more.

“Japan and the Birth of Modern Art” at NGV. JAPANESE ART LOVERS won’t want to miss NGV’s new exhibition,

“Japonisme: Japan and the Birth of Modern Art”. An influx of Japanese artworks into Europe in 1854 triggered an artistic revolution, known as Japonisme. This exhibit draws works from the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection to explore this period in art history through exquisite examples of Western decorative arts, works on paper, paintings, fashion and textiles, photography as well as Japanese art. Highlights include Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s iconic Divan Japonais poster and an Art Nouveau display cabinet designed by Louise Majorelle. The exhibition also displays a range of decorative arts that reference key Japanese themes, including flora, fauna and the landscape.

WE ARE SO GLAD YOU made it here to Melbourne! But now that you are here, there’s so much to see and so little time. Follow our itinerary for a perfect Melbourne day.

MORNING Step out of your hotel, and head off to taste some of Melbourne’s world-famous coffee.

Coffee connoisseurs are swamped for choice in Australia’s caffeine capital.

For breakfast, try Time Out at Federation Square. They offer a great range on their menu including buttermilk pancakes, smashed avocado, eggs Benedict, smoothies, and you can even toast your breakfast with a Bloody Mary or a Mimosa.

Start you sightseeing day by experiencing a new view of Melbourne from the 88th floor of Eureka Tower at Eureka Skydeck. Wander around and take in sweeping views of the city and surrounds. You can get your bearings for the adventurous day ahead.

Big and little kids alike will love a trip to SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium. You’ll get to discover plenty of incredible aquatic life including penguins, sharks, stingrays, jellyfish, and all types of fish.

AFTERNOON Wander the iconic laneways of inner city Melbourne, and stop in a café for lunch. Be sure to get out your phone and snap some photos of Melbourne’s colourful street art.

Must-see laneways for street art include Hosier Lane and AC/DC Lane.

Melbourne is also renowned for its shopping, so I hope you have saved your pennies. Major stores and fashion retailers line Bourke Street Mall, while Collins Street also offers plenty of retail therapy.

A relaxing afternoon trip to a museum is next on the agenda. At Federation Square you are spoilt for choice. If you’d like to discover more about Australian art head to The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. Whilst cinephiles will enjoy a trip to ACMI, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. It houses numerous exhibits based around film, TV, video games, digital culture and art.

Traditional and contemporary art lovers are catered for too with the worldrenowned NGV International on St Kilda

Road. It is home to a huge collection of art, and numerous exhibition spaces.

Currently on display is the major exhibition, “MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art”.

NIGHT There’s plenty of choice for dinner options in Melbourne too. You can try cuisines from all over the world. In the mood for French?

Then head to The French Brasserie for authentic traditional and modern French favourites. Or how about Italian, try Sarti in Russell Place. For Japanese, visit Saké Restaurant and Bar, with two locations in Flinders Lane and at Hamer Hall by the Yarra River.

An after-dinner drink is a must, and Melbourne is home to some very cool bars. Cocktail aficionados will want to try 1806 on Exhibition Street. For the best bar views in the city head straight for Rooftop Bar on Level 7 of Curtain House. You’ll get super cool Melbourne views, and a great drinks menu, including cocktails like ‘Lady Marmalade’ and ‘Shallow Halapeno’.

If musicals are your thing, then you are in luck as Melbourne is the musical capital of Australia, with fantastic productions playing most nights of the week. This month catch “Mamma Mia! The Musical” at the Princess Theatre from 10 July, or see “The Wizard of Oz”, now playing at the Regent Theatre.

MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN! My, my … Australia loves you! The extraordinary “Mamma Mia! The Musical” is currently playing to sell-out crowds around Australia. It opens here in Melbourne on 10 July at the Princess Theatre.

Based on the movie of the same name, “Mamma Mia!” tells the story of Sophie, a young bride-to-be, who on the eve of her wedding goes on a quest to discover the identity of her father. It brings three men from her mother Donna’s past back to the Greek island they last visited 20 years ago. This feelgood musical comes alive through ABBA’s timeless songs.

Playing the role of Tanya, one of Donna’s best friends, is Jayde Westaby.

Jayde, originally from the UK, has performed in “The Rocky Horror Show”, “Chicago”, “Sweet Charity”, “Jersey Boys” and “Grease” in the West End. She also recently starred in the Australian premiere of “Dream Lover–The Bobby Darin Musical”.

We speak to her about her role in “Mamma Mia!” and all things ABBA.

Tell us about your role as Tanya in “Mamma Mia!”.

Tanya is a fabulous woman who loves the finer things in life and shows it through an incredible wardrobe! There is nothing she loves more than being with her two best friends where she can be her true self and reminisce.

Growing up were you much of an ABBA fan?

No I wasn’t a huge fan growing up, but very quickly fell in love with their music and lyrics. It’s hard not too!

What’s your favourite ABBA song to perform in “Mamma Mia!”?

I LOVE performing “Does Your Mother Know”. It’s a fantastic number full of dancing, energy, tricks and fun! I’m very lucky I get to perform it every show.

Do you have a favourite scene or moment in the show?

I love watching our leading lady Natalie O’Donnell perform “Slipping Through My Fingers”, it kills me every time.

But my favourite scene is the bedroom scene where we sing “Chiquitita” and “Dancing Queen” with my other two dynamos.

We have so much fun together and it’s a really great moment full of chemistry and friendship.

You’ve worked both here and in the UK. Have you noticed any differences in the audience between the two countries?

Not huge differences really. People love theatre and the escapism it brings. Especially with a show like “Mamma Mia!”, audiences play such a huge part and we love to take them on this incredible adventure and encourage them to party with us at the end! Audiences are loving it and that makes us so happy.

You’ve had such a diverse career with many varied roles. Is there a dream role that you have yet to play?

Thank you, I feel very lucky to have played so many different characters in very different shows. There are many roles I haven’t played yet and I don’t want to name them and jinx myself!

LUNA PARK

Melbourne’s favourite amusement park has to be Luna Park located in St Kilda. Overlooking Port Phillip Bay, it is the perfect weekend hotspot full of fun rides for the whole family. Luna Park’s most famous attraction is the Great Scenic Railway, a large wooden coaster that travels at high speed around the outside of the entire park.

The park itself is over 105 years old having opened in 1912. Much-loved rides include Pharaoh’s Curse, the Coney Island Top Drop, the Twin Dragon, the Spider and the Carousel.
