here’s no avoiding it. It’s December and Vegas is in party mode. This already bustling town is nothing short of sizzling with excitement this month. Our Calendar is packed as ever with top-notch entertainment. There’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, which is cowboys, competitions and so much more. Whether or not you’re into the rodeo scene, the NFR experience in Vegas is unlike anything else and we have the lowdown on the parties, the music, Cowboy Christmas and all the merry action that comes along. Looking for a great night out, we have nine spots that’ll get you in the spirit. Our One Block points the way to all that’s hip in the Paris-Bally’s-Planet Hollywood sphere. Adding to the thrill is the new Cirque show R.U.N., which brings high-octane drama and chases at Luxor Hotel & Casino. Another show making waves is The STRAT’s Celestia. If you’ve been wondering about all the buzz surrounding that mind-boggling show of acrobatics, now is the time to watch it. Not only have new acts been added but guests also get to go behind-the-scenes on Fridays and Sundays at 4 pm. The complimentary 30-minute

When Vegas Goes Country

Known as the “Super Bowl of Rodeo,” the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is one of Las Vegas’ largest—and richest—events, with a total purse of $10 million. This season-ending championship for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association consists of 10 rounds, one on each consecutive day. Here’s how to rope in all the fun even if you never set foot in the arena. Jennifer McKee

hile tickets can be hard to come by if you’re not a previous ticket holder, you can buy a Mad Dash 30 ticket: purchase a ticket to a sold-out NFR round and find a seat in the balcony; if the reserved ticket holder arrives, you may move to another empty seat. Those unable to locate an unfilled seat after 30 minutes can either watch the event on the Thomas & Mack Center concourse or get a full refund.

There are plenty of other ways to enjoy the action: special simulcasts, performances by the top names in country music, shopping extravaganzas and after-hours parties. Pull on those cowboy boots and follow us for the highlights. Kicking off NFR season in style is Fremont Street Experience’s Downtown Hoedown—now in its 33rd year—where performers take the Main, First and Third street stages twice

specials and nightly entertainment. NFR’s official afterparty can be found at the Mirage. Its Race and Sports Book’s 85-foot HD projection screens give a front-seat view. Admission is free and there’ll be giveaways during the rodeo. Once it ends, stick around for “Rodeo Vegas,” with a lineup of country stars such as Mitchell Tenpenny, Easton Corbin, Chris Lane and more. For those who want a more relaxed setting, Mirage’s Parlor Lounge features live music from 9:30 pm nightly. And, cigar-chompin’, scotch-swilling funnyman Ron White takes the stage in the Terry Fator Theatre Dec. 6-7 and 13-14. Another staple during NFR is Rodney

Carrington, who takes over the David Copperfield Theater at MGM Grand Dec. 5-14. MGM Grand is always a hotspot during NFR, so keep your eyes peeled for cowboys. We suggest hanging out at the 24-hour Whiskey Down, which pours an impressive selection of fine spirits and has three blackjack tables, should you wish to play a few hands. In addition to the return of Reba with Brooks & Dunn to the Colosseum (Dec. 4, 6-8, 10-11 & 13-14), Caesars Palace’s Strip-fronting Spanish Steps hosts pre-rodeo parties with DJs, drink specials, lasso-throwing contests and rider appearances. Indoors, at the Montecristo Cigar Bar, watch a live feed of the action while enjoying drink

each on Dec. 4 (4:30-11 pm). The lineup includes Jackson Michelson, Gabby Barrett, David Lee Murphy, Filmore, Dylan Scott and Rodney Atkins. At your downtown NFR headquarters from Dec. 5-13, the Golden Nugget’s entertainment doesn’t quit; catch the Charlie Daniels Band, Terri Clark, Ronnie Milsap, Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan, among other top names. Don’t forget to make reservations to dine at Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse. If it’s a free viewing party you’re after, point your spurs toward the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center. Watch the action from 6 pm on Dec. 5-14 in climate-controlled tents on large screens, with food and drink

specials, food samplings and cigars. Mandalay Bay gets you in the spirit with Cowboyville, a nightly simulcast of NFR plus drink specials and live music. It’s a great wind-down from the Roper Cowboy Marketplace, a free Western shopping experience in the convention center featuring hundreds of vendors. Cowboy Christmas, one of the year’s most anticipated events, takes place Dec. 5-14 from 9 am-5 pm at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Admission is free. Western wear, cowboy art and jewelry, however, are just the beginning—Cowboy Christmas is a place for enthusiasts to gather and socialize. NFR Central features special guest appearances each day, including an autograph session by

Team Hesston on Dec. 7 from 10:3011:30 am. There are also live radio remotes and giveaways. Make merry at the Coors Rodeo Saloon, where large screens replay the prior night’s NFR performance. And The Great Wall of Rodeo features interactive displays, a graphic of all 120 NFR contestants, NFR timelines and more. There’s a bonus expo: the RMEF Hunter & Outdoor Christmas Expo is upstairs from Cowboy Christmas in the South Hall and is also free. The best way to get around during NFR? The express shuttle that runs between the Las Vegas Convention Center and partner hotel-casinos. It’s free, even to those who aren’t staying at one of the properties on the bill.

In addition to the parties on the Strip and downtown, there are a number of off-Strip hotel casinos with NFR festivities. Among them are the Silverton, with nightly viewing parties and after-parties in the Veil Pavilion (also try the great buffet); South Point, which is home to the Miss Rodeo America Horsemanship Competition on Dec. 2, Benny Binion’s NFR Bucking Horse & Bull Sale on Dec. 5 and its Western Gift Show daily Dec. 5-15. And the Orleans Arena is home to the ALL IN Barrel Race and Breakaway, also Dec. 5-15 and is free. DRAKE AT XS

There’s a XS AT ENCORE Drake and Las Vegas seem to go handnew breed of in-hand these days. The multi-platinum tequila bar artist has had a successful limited run of performances at XS throughout 2019. in town— Though Drake’s Dec. 30 performance at Park MGM’s the posh club has been called the “final installment,” we’ll believe it when we Mama hear it. No matter when you visit, it’s a Rabbit see-and-be-seen club—a favorite of the

TAO AT THE VENETIAN A long-time Vegas favorite, TAO is hotter than ever. A visit on a Saturday night practically guarantees you’ll be rubbing elbows with a celebrity, either in the second-floor club or the first-floor restaurant (which is one of Vegas’ top spots for sushi). We love to start our evening in the enchanting lounge, cocktails and appetizers in hand, fueling up for a night on the town. 702.388.8588

FOUNDATION ROOM AT MANDALAY BAY Another oldie but goodie, there’s a reason people keep flocking to the 63rd floor of Mandalay Bay: the view. From its perch atop the House of Blues on the south end of the Strip, the Foundation Room sets you amid the neon—don’t forget to take a selfie! Belly up to the bar, or if you prefer a more intimate experience, ask for bottle service in one of the nooks and crannies found in Foundation Room’s cavernous labyrinth of hideouts. 702.632.7631

But it would be quite a task to outshine The Chandelier Lounge at The Cosmopolitan, a three-level architectural wonder with curtains made with 2 million luminous crystal beads. VANDERPUMP COCKTAIL GARDEN AT CAESARS

Another gem—a hidden one, if you want to be specific—at the Cosmopolitan is The Barbershop Cuts & Cocktails. Not your usual combo, but what’s not to love about getting a deluxe cut by top pros in the city at The Barbershop, then heading for a night out at a swanky Prohibition-style parlor—behind the janitor’s door—complete with a fine selection of whiskey and cocktails.

A unique garden oasis from the mind of Lisa Vanderpump is one of Caesars Palace’s most sumptuous spaces. Vanderpump Cocktail Garden is laid out with posh lighting, fixtures and furniture from Nick Alain, known for combining romantic and industrial elements. Love reality shows? You’re likely to run into your favorite stars here.

702.632.4700

MAMA RABBIT AT PARK MGM There’s a new breed of tequila bar in town. Park MGM’s Mama Rabbit, which has Las Vegas’ largest agave-based spirits selection, also shelves the country’s most extensive collection of tequila and mescal—more than 500 different labels. It takes its name from Mayahuel, the Mexican goddess of agave and fertility, who is said to have nourished her 400 rabbits with mescal and tequila. Think on that as you sip on spirits beside a pop-surrealist art installation. 888.529.4828

COMMONWEALTH Hipsters love this 6,000-squarefoot space in downtown Las Vegas for its swanky design inspired by pre-Prohibition-era design. There’s also a comfy rooftop patio and secret bar—text the Laundry Room for a reservation at 702.701.1466; you’ll be denied access otherwise.
