Doo-Bop Jazz Bar

Doo-Bop Jazz Bar has a number of impressive acts that are not to be missed this month. For Jim Kelly’s Thrillseekers (4 May), the name says it all. Constantly searching for that musical thrill, Jim’s compositions fall into the contemporary end of jazz, with a heavy emphasis on groove. Ingrid James is an award-winning Queensland jazz singer, songwriter, producer and more. She hits Doo-Bop on 13 May for Swinging Sundays with the Ingrid James Quintet. It’ll be the perfect way to cap off your week. On 18 May, the James Whiting Quartet will be performing a variety of music spanning the Great American Songbook and the Latin-jazz fusion of the Americas, as well as original modern jazz featured on his recent albums, it’s sure to be a great performance. Quickly becoming a voice in Australia to be reckoned with, Kate Wadey sings without fuss or bravado in a sweet, sure and rich voice that demonstrates a level of craft beyond her years. So, prepare to be blown away by the Kate Wadey Quartet (26 May).

BRISBANE GREETERS Visitors to Brisbane can get a more intimate feel for the city by joining in on one of the scheduled tours which depart from Brisbane City Hall every day at 10am. Patricia Piccinini: Curious Affection The most ambitious exhibition to date of work by Patricia Piccinini is now on at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), becoming GOMA’s largest ever solo exhibition by an Australian artist. Known for her imaginative hybrid creatures, Piccinini uses sculpture, installation, video and sound to realise a fantastic and compassionate vision inspired by science, Surrealism and mythology. Born in Sierra Leone and raised in Australia, she has exhibited extensively around the world. She represented Australia at the 2003 Venice Biennale, created the infamous inflatable sculpture “The Skywhale” for the 2013 Centenary of Canberra, and drew over a million visitors to a touring exhibition in Brazil in 2016. Along with a survey of some of the artist’s most recognisable life-like sculptures of the past 10 years, it will include a largescale newly commissioned inflatable sculpture suspended in GOMA’s Long Gallery and culminate in a vast and immersive multisensory environment.

all its own and some of the best shopping, drinking, dining and entertainment options in Brisbane. With charming markets, excellent restaurants, alfresco bars and cultural activities galore, there has never been a better time to visit.

THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon Streets Beach, but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry. The Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA as

SIR THOMAS BRISBANE PLANETARIUM.

MARVELLOUS MT COOT-THA

AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean.

Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive.

From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years.

At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas.

Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle.

Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot.

You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes.

The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers.

At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk.

A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake.

As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children.

The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature.

Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

Saké Restaurant & Bar serves up contemporary Japanese cuisine with a distinct local flavour and has an exclusive range of premium sakés imported directly from Japan. Try the Otsumami menu, which features small bites that are perfectly matched with delicious saké and shochu cocktails.

A little further down the river at 71 Eagle Street, Riparian Plaza’s open promenade and plaza area features some of Brisbane City’s most popular waterside dining experiences, including Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse, Riverbar & Kitchen and modern Asian delicacies at Madame Wu. The Riverside Centre at 123 Eagle Street is home to Jellyfish, Friday’s, Pig ’N’ Whistle, Groove Train, Blackbird Bar & Grill and Navala Churrascaria.

At 167 Eagle Street, you’ll find the funky Riverland. Featuring a unique industrial design and two fitted out 40-foot shipping containers, Riverland offers great river views and a cool beer garden. With 16 beers on tap and five individual kitchens offering street food from around the world, Riverland is the place to be anytime of the week.

Closer to the Story Bridge, Customs House, with its grand colonnades, portico, and copper-sheathed dome, is a fine example of Victorian Free Classical style architecture, and also boasts expansive river views. Customs House

Restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner. It is especially appropriate for a leisurely Sunday breakfast available on the riverside terrace from 9am.

Further afield in Toowong, the Regatta Hotel is known as the Grand Lady of the Brisbane River. Established in 1874, it has survived fire and flood and now boasts the Boatshed Restaurant, the Street Café, the Main Bar and the Courtyard. Executive chef Daniel Fleming has designed menus which provide an innovative, broad range of dishes using fresh, seasonal produce.

No matter what your reason for being here, the month of May is a great time to explore South East Queensland. n I recently had the opportunity to attend a site familiarisation in Brisbane’s CBD along with several other Brisbane concierge and front office staff. Hosted by Brisbane Marketing we were given a guided tour of some of the city’s hidden gems.

Points of interest included the heritagelisted Brisbane City Hall, where we experienced a clock tower tour (highly recommended for a fantastic vantage point of the city and surrounds) and the Museum of Brisbane (host to a number of excellent exhibitions throughout the year that explore contemporary and historic Brisbane, and its people).

businesses. Room with Roses was a standout and is well-known for their high tea offerings (all inspired by their own family recipes). From here we walked through the Queen Street Mall and into the Tattersalls Arcade (one of Brisbane’s oldest and most prestigious shopping precincts). A short walk down fashionable Edward Street, home to the likes of Gucci, Hermes, Cartier, Montblanc, Rhodes & Beckett and Louis Vuitton, to our final stop Mayfield Chocolates. Founded in 1993, the Mayfield Chocolates philosophy has been to use the finest Australian ingredients (Queensland dark rum, Tasmanian leatherwood honey and native macadamia nuts to name a few) with chocolate of the highest quality.

The result is just divine and something you must try for yourself to gain a full appreciation.
