Golfers and gardeners alike know this well. Still, there will be those April showers—in which case, I suggest taking shelter in style.

90 MINUTES IN: There are telltale signs that spring has sprung in Atlanta: festivals in the streets, flowers in the yards, The Masters Tournament on TVs and people on patios. With daylight saving time on my side, I like to dine al fresco as much as possible (find tried-and-true patios on page 12). Andrews Square in Buckhead Entertainment District, the area underwent a glam transformation in the past year.

With a sunny courtyard still at the center, this new season for the two-story district has brought a fresh mix of boutique shops, eateries and fitness classes. Q: Art exhibits are always a great way to dodge some rainy weather. Where can you find a few in the city?

A: The High Museum of Art as it is the leading art museum in the Southeast. Currently there is a powerful exhibit on the top floor commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Taking the title from his speech, “'A Fire That No Water Could Put Out': Civil Rights Photography" is on view until April 29.

Q: Name a place to keep the kids entertained when the weather isn't ideal.

A: A very special place to visit for kids (and adults) is Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary.

Located in Locust Grove, less than an hour south of Atlanta, this non-profit offers a permanent home for more than 1,500 rescue animals. Although there is no admission, they do accept donations and I recommend taking the guided tour. It’s best to go in the morning, and often better if the weather is cooler or overcast. In the city, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Atlanta and Children's Museum of Atlanta are always a hit with little ones.

dogwood.org The third oldest fine arts festival in the country and the longest-running festival in Atlanta, the 82nd Atlanta Dogwood Festival is anticipated to draw more than 250,000 attendees of all ages to Piedmont Park. With live music, a kids zone, the Disc Dog Competition and much more, it’s no wonder this free event is a favorite kickoff to spring.

GETTING THERE Piedmont Park is a short walk from MARTA via the Midtown and Arts Center stations, as well as is accessible via the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail. Atlanta visitors and local staycationers alike can enjoy special rates at the festival’s hotel partner, W Atlanta Midtown.

THE FOOD In addition to the usual festival foods, serious noshers can get tickets to Backyard Bites & Brews. This curated

It’s often considered one of the city’s most spirited and eclectic with live music, activities for kids, an artists’ market, tour of homes and creative costumes.

Al Fresco Frenzy Outdoor dining is about more than satisfying an appetite; it’s also a feast for the eyes. Three local bloggers share their go-to places to stay awhile. Of course, photo lighting is on point, too.

After moving to Atlanta a few years ago, Florida transplant Alyssa Fagien created the popular Instagram personality known as @atl_bucketlist. She keeps the culinary scene under her thumb— literally. For dinner with a view, she suggests heading to O-Ku on the Westside. “Not only is O-Ku one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Atlanta, but it’s also one of my favorite rooftops!” Fagien says.

“The view is absolutely gorgeous and the space is small enough to feel cozy, but big enough to hold a crowd. I can always count on O-Ku for refreshing cocktails and the freshest fish.”

RELAXATION STATION When Michael Lennox opened Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall at mile marker 9.25 along the Atlanta BeltLine’s Eastside Trail, he was on to something—and not just the prime location. With a patio designed to soak up the sunshine, the bar and restaurant created a modern communal experience, inviting people to congregate around picnic tables, snap a photo by the camper-turner-bar or share the family-style foods and punch bowls. Since opening in 2014, it’s no surprise that on any given day, the place is often packed from noon to night.
