With star-studded music lineups, food fairs, art walks and heritage celebrations, summer is the season of festivals and we’ve rounded up the can’t-miss events

Taste of Chicago When: July 5-9 Where: Grant Park, 337 E. Randolph St. What is it: For more than 30 years, the city’s popular restaurants have been slinging dishes in Grant Park for this annual smorgasbord. This year is no different, though 17 of the 67 eateries featured will be brand new to the festival.

Expect classic Chicago fare like deep-dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s, pierogis from Kasia’s deli and ribs from Robinson’s No. 1, as well as ethnic-inspired dishes by places like Broken English Taco Pub, Hakka Bakka Indian Kati Rolls, Seoul Taco and more.

Who’s coming: Between plates, head to the Petrillo Music Shell to see concerts by Alessia Cara, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals, Passion Pit, Café Tacvba and The O’Jays. What else: A secondary Bud Light stage will host free concerts with daily themes: July 5 is R&B/hip-hop, July 6 is Latin, July 7 is folk and country, July 8 is rock and July 9 is an eclectic mix. When: July 14-16 Where: Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph St. What is it: A hipster’s heaven, this annual fair from the indie music site pitchfork.com features a who’s who of rock, electronic and hiphop acts. If you don’t recognize the names on the lineup, give it a year or two and you will.

Who’s coming: Headliners like Solange (Beyoncé’s sister), A Tribe Called Quest and LCD Soundsystem promise stellar shows, but don’t overlook acts like Detroit rapper Danny Brown, folk rocker Hiss Golden Messenger or the soulful, synth-backed singer Angel Olsen, who have earned cabals of die-hard fans. What else: Check out the Saint Heron House, a multidisciplinary “experience” held at locations around the city by Solange Knowles’ record company, Saint Records.

Events include a poetry reading and discussion at Soho House Chicago, a late-night jazz jam at The Promontory and an art installation featuring contemporary black art makers at the festival.

Taste of River North When: July 21-23 Where: Ward Park, 630 N. Kingsbury St. What is it: While River North

When: July 29-30 Where: Milwaukee Ave. between North Ave. and Paulina St. What is it: Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as one of the best fests of the season, this annual neighborhood party is one of the summer’s top draws. Expect more than 40 bands across three stages, loads of nosh from the local restaurants and installations by area artists. Who’s coming: This year’s line-up includes the prolific rock band Guided by Voices, indie hiphop group Doomtree and sibling duo Jeff the Brotherhood. For the full line-up, visit wickerparkbucktown. com. What else: Though its soul is as a music fest, there’s no denying the intense arts culture of the Wicker Park/Bucktown community. Arts at Wicker Park Fest is a dedicated section of the fair where local artists erect impressive installations and showcase performance art. Last year, dance troupe Collaboraction staged the Dome of Dance Tournament as well as held a break dancing workshop.

Meanwhile, sculpture artists installed “Universe,” a contemporary, mythological model of the cosmos, which included life-sized human figures covered with mirrors and tethered to a 20-foot radio tower. Tots can head to Kids Fest where activities include cooking demos, crafts tables, nail and face painting, bounce houses, mad science and remote-controlled car racing. Tickets: $10 donation

is the beating heart of the city’s nightlife scene, it’s more than just a spot for boozy beverages—it’s home to great kitchens helmed by talented chefs. During this Steak burgers and macaroni and cheese

three-day festival, the party district’s foodies finally get their due. Spots like Ruth’s

Chris Steakhouse, The Kerryman, Kinzie Chophouse and Farmhouse (among others) will whip up dishes in the park alongside the Chicago River. It wouldn’t be a River North festival without some libations, so cool off on chilled beers from local Goose Island. Who’s coming: Keep the vibe upbeat with party jams from acts like the Boy Band Review, Our Name is Jonas (a Weezer tribute band) and Don’t Speak (a No Doubt tribute). What is it: The largest Latino festival in the Midwest, more than 1 million people flock to Pilsen during the four-day celebration, which features two stages (a main stage showcasing rock, pop, regional Mexican, banda and norteño music and a stage dedicated entirely to house music), carnival rides, a children’s area and also education and health offerings like a college fair, a civil rights for immigrants booth and healthy eating seminars. Lollapalooza When: August 3-6 Where: Grant Park, 337 E. Randolph St. What is it: Chicago’s most famous music bash might not without discussing Lollapalooza. Originally founded by Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, the annual festival has only continued to grow in size over its 25 year history: Now, nearly half a million people flood in over the weekend. Lineups feature an eclectic mix of genres, from hip-hop to pop, metal

West Fest When: July 7-9 Where: Chicago Ave. between Damen and Wood What is it: There’s more to Chicago than the Loop, and West Town is determined to show it off. Local artists, restaurants, retailers, crafters and more pour onto the streets to display their goods. Who’s coming: The festival packs in two stages. The main stage hosts live music acts like punk funk band ESG, alt group Wood (whose music was described by Pitchfork as “transcendent psychadelia”) and Australian punk rockers Royal Headache. A secondary DJ stage focuses on Chicago house-style beats from Miles Maeda, Mark Farina and Derrick Carter. What else: Pet Fest on Saturday and Sunday features a dog wash, dog obstacle course, paw painting and plenty of shopping for man’s best friend. What else: Always a popular sideshow, Kidzapalooza is a mini fest just for tots with performances by Tim Kubary & the Space Cadets, Q Brothers, Litte Miss Ann and more. Smoke Show Windy City Smokeout heats up Chicago with fiery foods, craft beers and a country music lineup that would make any Nashville fan froth

See? City folks just don’t get it.

Plot twist: Brice pulls a 180, saying, “The first time I played Windy City Smokeout, it just blew me away. We had such great support up there. To have that kind of response was just so awesome.” On July 16, the twangy singer will return to the Smokeout stage for the second time, closing out the annual three-day shindig.

Though it received an American Country Music nomination for Best Festival this year, Windy City Smokeout is, at its core, a food and drink fest. Hosted by local smoke spots Bub City and Joe’s Bar, BBQ bigshots come from around the nation (like fan faves 17th Street Barbecue from Murphysboro, Illinois; Skylight Inn from Ayden, North Carolina and The Salt Lick from Driftwood, Texas) to grill up grub for nearly 50,000 hungry attendees. It’s enough powerhouse pitmasters to impress the South 12 W H E R E C H I C AG O I J U LY 2017

Carolina-born Brice. “My granddaddy built big barbeque pits and I grew up doing that,” he says. “I just remember Windy City Smokeout blowing my mind…it was a big deal for me.”

Over its five-year history, this Southern-style fest has evolved to attract major country stars.

This year’s lineup is packed with big name acts like Kip Moore, Jana Kramer and Brice’s old pal Jake Owen. “I love Jake! We’ve been buddies for a long time,” he laughs, surprised to learn that Owen is on the roster. “I was there the first day Jake came to [Nashville]. I was playin’ on a little restaurant stage, had just gotten a record deal and Jake came to town and was sittin’ there eatin’. I got him up to sing a song.” Brice doesn’t remember the restaurant’s name— unfortunate, given that both singers that night have gone on to become genre superstars: Brice boasts nearly 1 million Twitter followers, Owen has a bit over 2 million.

For his Chicago comeback, Brice is proudly debuting new songs from his upcoming selftitled album, due out November 3. Fans can expect more soulful sounds from the singer, who had vocal surgery last October and

worked hard to recover quickly. “It was a little scary,” he confesses. “It’s a muscle and I had to get it back to Olympic-athlete status. But I walked the ledge and got it done…I’ll be able to come out and lay it on thick. It’ll be good.”

The kitchen is helmed by Ross Mendoza, who’s no stranger to midcentury-inspired eateries: He was heading the famed JeanGeorges outpost Pump Room before BLVD scooped him up.

For his part, the chef has created a contemporary American menu full of global influences. Diners can expect dishes like pappardelle with oxtail ragu, prawn tempura with tamarind and lime and even a luxe suckling pig with mojo sauce and fava beans. He’s also managed to incorporate some classic 1950’s plates like pot pies and patty melts to stay true to the restaurant’s old school roots.

While Mendoza delights the taste buds, it’s Karen Herold of

Studio K Creative who is responsible for dazzling diners’ eyeballs. Her previous works have been hotspots like Girl & the Goat, GT Prime and Balena, but for BLVD, Herold didn’t hold back. As Kara Callero explains, “This will be a showstopper: When you walk in [you’ll see] these grand 30-foot ceilings and a beautiful staircase that wraps around the main bar downstairs.” Herold took inspiration from Art Deco and Hollywood Regency design styles— think Champagne gold mirror installations, geometric patterns and plenty of round banquette

seating. “There are a lot of elements that are very reminiscent of that time, but we didn’t want to be too theme-y,” explains Kara Callero.

Though the restaurant isn’t small (it holds 215 guests), like any A-list sanctuary, intimacy is prized.

“We’ve really been conscious about creating pockets of space that have their own identity,” says Kara Callero. “It feels dynamic. It feels warm. … We wanted something that was approachable, but also glamorous and decadent.” The best part? You don’t even have to be a member of SAG to get in.

EAT YOUR HEART OUT, HOLLYWOOD. The newest fabulous restaurant isn’t tucked away in Los Angeles, it’s shining bright in Chicago’s West Loop.

Dubbed BLVD after the famous Sunset Boulevard, the chic restaurant and lounge opened last month and is the first creation by Steven Zaleski and husband-wife duo Kara and Frank Callero.

Inspired by the Golden Age of Hollywood, the restaurant caters to the whims of its diners like a personal assistant to an A-list diva.

“We have traditional caviar service, and if someone wants a nice bottle of Champagne and a whole fish, we can do that,” says Kara Callero.

“But if they want to come in and get a burger and a beer, they can

“I DIDN’T PULL ANY PUNCHES ON THIS ONE,” reveals Marcus Sakey, the bestselling, Chicago-based author of the new ghostly thriller “Afterlife.” He’s not kidding: The novel, which will be released July 18, features murder, cannibalism, passionate romance and a ghostly existential plane—and that’s in the first 20 pages. Before it was even published, the story ignited a Hollywood bidding war that ended with Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard purchasing the film rights through his Imagine Entertainment studio. “That was an awfully good day,” laughs Sakey.

This isn’t the author’s first taste of success. Fans know him as the creator of the “Brilliance” trilogy, which sold more than 1 million copies and was auctioned off to film studio Legendary Entertainment for a cool $1 million.

film is still in process and “Afterlife” won’t be hitting the silver screen for at least a couple years, Sakey’s third novel, “Good People,” has already made its Hollywood debut. Released in 2013, the film adaptation starred James Franco and Kate Hudson. It scored just 10 percent on Rotten Tomatos, although Sakey is quick to point out he wasn’t involved in writing the screenplay. “To be honest at the end it didn’t work out the way I hoped,” he laments. But he’s learned his lesson and will personally be penning the script for “Afterlife.”

Set in Chicago, Sakey’s ninth novel makes real-life locations around the city the settings of major scenes. Read closely and you’ll recognize the Mariano’s in West Loop, Wrigley Field and the luxe Langham Hotel as the main characters traverse the town.

The plot centers on FBI agent Will Brody and his boss

(and lover!) Claire McCoy as they hunt a serial sniper.

But events spiral, Brody dies and his spirit must navigate a ghostly version of Chicago to get back to his love. “I imagined this existence, knowing that the woman I love and everything I love was so close, but that I’d never be able to touch them again,” Sakey says. “And that feeling just sort of gutted me.”

If that sounds spooky, it’s because it is. Even suspense queen, fellow Chicagoan and author of “Gone Girl” Gillian Flynn raves the book is “thrilling and funny and disturbing and sharp as hell.”

While Sakey admits that he had fun creeping himself out imagining he was surrounded by ghosts, he wants to assure fans, “The goal is to cost you some sleep, but hopefully because you’re reading, not because you can’t sleep anymore.”

Broadway Ave.), where jazz greats like Von Freeman and Franz Jackson have riffed on stage. The club highlights all sorts of jazz, from traditional to contemporary and bebop to improvisational. This BBQ hotspot boasts live country music every day, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take the mic for live-band karaoke on Tuesdays.
