TOPDENTISTS TOP The dentists on Orlando magazine’s 2021 Top Dentists list were chosen as among the finest in the area by their local peers. topDentists, LLC, a national evaluation firm, conducted an extensive survey, asking local dentists, “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?

Dentists and specialists were asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies, and physical results.

Our 2021 list features 222 dentists in 8 specialty areas. Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry. A dentist’s inclusion on the list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists.

What are same-day crowns?

Same-day crowns are made with an in-house laboratory, allowing the patient to leave with a permanent crown on the same day. We use a digital scanner and medical 3D printing—the crown is designed, printed and glazed in the oven while the patient relaxes. Other than the convenience of having it done in one visit, the characterization matches the patient’s teeth, since the characterization and glazing is artistically crafted, chairside. This procedure is perfect for crowns in the back teeth, front teeth, implants, veneers, and bridges. It saves the patient the trouble of having to wear an acrylic temporary, and from having multiple visits. It is so exciting that Dentistry has evolved to give patients access to this kind of higher quality, more convenient care!

What is a good age for your child to start seeing the dentist and how is a pediatric dentist different from a general dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1 or within 6 months after the first tooth erupts. After completing a bachelor degree and four years of dental school, pediatric dentists undergo 2 additional years of training. This residency focuses in management of child behavior, dental care for children with special needs, craniofacial growth, and different treatment modalities utilizing sedation and hospital care. It’s important to see a pediatric dentist because, along with their added training, pediatric dentists understand kids and know how to make children comfortable at their dental visits.

They have bright, colorful offices with kid-friendly staff, and understand how to effectively treat dental issues specific to little mouths from babies to teens.

What causes receding gums? What are the consequences and how is it corrected?

There are many things that can make the gums recede. For example, improper or over aggressive tooth brushing, clenching or grinding, or misaligned teeth can all contribute to recession. If left untreated, receding gums can progress and lead to exposed tooth roots, which can lead to increased sensitivity and cavities. If the gums recede enough, it could even lead to tooth loss. Depending on the location and severity of the receding gums, there are many ways to treat gum recession. Thanks to advancements in technology and improved techniques, such as the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST), receding gums can frequently be corrected without the need for scalpels or stitches, and we don’t even have to touch the roof of your mouth anymore.

What is a dental implant and what problems can it solve?

A NOTE TO OUR PATIENTS, FRIENDS AND FAMILY: The previous year has been unprecedented in so many ways for our practice, employees and patients. Our prayers go out to all those who were and still are being directly affected by this devastating pandemic. I am extremely grateful to the team here at Fine Dentistry of Downtown Orlando for their resilience, and creative thinking, which helped us to reopen completely and stay open. Thankfully, our doors never fully closed and for a period of 7 weeks we were able to operate with a small crew to care for our patients experiencing dental emergencies while maintaining the highest standard of safety.

We’d like to acknowledge Mrs. Doreen Ratigan for her incredible contribution to our office. When I shared my dilemma of over-priced and low quality PPE, she stepped in with a team of “angels” who hand-made the PPE gowns that we wear to this day, while treating our patients.

I would personally like to thank all my staff for their hard work, dedication and passion to serve our community. From researching and finding everything we needed to return to “COVID Normal” to their bravery and countless suggestions to improve the safety in our office working environment. There were easier paths to take but this team decided that it was more important to stay and work together.

He comes to us with years of honorable service to our country and many accolades for his achievements in Dentistry.

I cannot tolerate my C-Pap machine. Are there any other options to treat my mild sleep apnea?

Although the C-Pap is still the gold standard to treat sleep apnea because it forces air into the respiratory tract, there are alternatives for patients who are not compliant. Q: What is the process of designing a smile for porcelain veneers or crowns?

A: First we start with a series of professional photographs and consultation to discuss patient goals. A digital impression scan is taken to evaluate the current smile. Digital modifications to the smile are made using this imagery based on the patient’s bite, facial mid-line, eye and lip positions. The shape, shade, length and tooth positioning can be altered during the design process. Digital articulation is used to mimic the normal movements of the jaw so that the new smile not only is esthetically pleasing, but also well-functioning. Facial overlay imagery is then used to evaluate the new smile within the patient’s facial structure. Once the desired goals are achieved, a 3D model is printed of the the new smile design and is used as the template for the porcelain restorations.

Why are my teeth chipping and cracking?

A tooth can fracture when it has excessive force on it. People that clench or grind their teeth, whether it is at nighttime or during the day, are more likely to to have breakage. These are called parafunctional habits, and can be triggered by the teeth not being in proper alignment. Orthodontic treatment with either braces or clear aligners can correct alignment and protect the teeth from wearing down or breaking.

Clenching and grinding at night can also be caused by obstructive sleep apnea. If you are not breathing well at night, you may have a decreased oxygen levels. This puts tremendous strain on your cardiovascular system and can create high blood pressure. It can also cause acid reflux and other systemic problems.
