TS@W I WELCOME

I love a challenge, and describing what’s special about The Shops at Wailea in a small space is certainly that. Then again, sometimes brevity is the best way to convey grandeur. The Shops at Wailea is, simply, the most beautiful and elegant shopping experience on the island of Maui. The luxury found here is unparalleled: Rolex timepieces; handcrafted leather goods; diamonds; pearls of the South Pacific; original fine art in five unique galleries. The Shops at Wailea outfits you for a dream vacation in paradise from head to toe in swim fashions, evening attire, daytime essentials and fabulous footwear. Furthermore, it’s got five terrific restaurants serving some of my favorite dishes: Chicken Lollipops; Longhi-Longhi Salad; filet mignon seared to perfection; ono sushi in every shape and size you can imagine; sweet treats, snacks and Kona coffee drinks. Under clear blue Hawaiian skies, caressed by the warm ocean breeze, it doesn’t get any better than this. Welcome to Paradise. Robert “Bob” Dye

tretching from Keawakapu Beach to The Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui, the 1.5-mile Wailea Coastal Walk offers easy access to the Wailea resort and is a great aerobic workout. The Coastal Walk offers a rich introduction to local history, flora and fauna. At the Wailea Point Historical Interpretive Site, you’ll encounter an excellent introduction to the more than 60 indigenous plants found in the Native Hawaiian Garden. These hardy plants include the a‘ali‘i, which provides wood for houses, and the ‘ilima (shown at right), used in lei-making. A partially restored homesite and plaque recount the story of the Native Hawaiians and Europeans who lived in the area between the late 1300s and early twentieth century.

Guitar Hero

Slack Key: The sound of two guitars in harmony strummed by a single hand.

n the 1830s, Spanish cowboys called vaqueros were brought to Hawai‘i to lend their expertise in establishing what would become a boom ranching industry. With them they brought hats, boots, lassoes, and — delightfully — their kika, or guitars. For the Hawaiians working alongside the vaqueros, it was love at first sight. They learned to play the guitar and make the sound their own by slacking the keys. Developing a style of fingerpicking which allows Paniolo O Hawai‘i, a mustsee documentary about the cowboys of Hawai‘i, is available at island bookstores.

the larger (bass) strings to play continuously as the melody is plucked on the small strings, they made magic: Slack key, or ki hoalu, guitar. “I truly believe that when I perform with my ki hoalu I am playing the soundtrack to Aloha,” says Bobby Moderow, Jr., of the Na Hoku Hanohano awardwinning group Maunalua. “It personifies the aloha of the aina (land), the rain that falls to nourish the aina and for the ocean that has helped define this wonderful culture.” Perpetuating the art of slack key is a passion for Oahu-born Moderow, whose maternal lineage includes paniolo (cowboys) on the Big

Into the Woods Island hardwood inspires local artists.ts

I

ndigenous koa wood is an integral part of Hawaiian culture. Historically, it was a highly valued building material for the allimportant voyaging canoes, perfectly suited for them because of its strength and resilience. In ancient times, a kahau kalai wa‘a (master canoe maker) would venture high up into the upland forests (or wao akua, realm of the gods) to chose a tree. The journey itself would be a ceremony involving dreams, signs, and the guidance of the ‘elepaio bird. Canoe hulls require one huge piece of koa, so only the largest, healthiest and straightest trees were chosen. The dance of the bird; a favorable dream; the whisper of the gods in the wind — all would lead to the right tree. The mighty koa is as beautiful as it is strong, says Sam ‘Ohukani‘ohi‘a Gon, III, senior scientist and cultural advisor for The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii. “For the artisan, it works easily, resists cracking, and takes a fine polish. When you look at the grain, it can be

anything from this wonderful golden background to amazing ripples that look like the surface undulating, but it is perfectly flat … it’s an amazing play of light.” In shops small and large across the islands, woodworkers delight in unveiling new character every time they work with a fresh piece. Major employer of local woodworkers is Martin & MacArthur, known for fine furniture constructed with native hardwoods. The company is partnered with Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods on a reforestation program, where a new tree is planted on a 2,700-acre plantation in Hamakua (Big Island of Hawaii) with each furniture purchase. The company stays sustainable, explains CEO Michael Tam, by using wood from fallen trees only, and wasting nothing. The “waste” cuttings, no matter how tiny, are used to make fabulous items such as pens, bookmarks, and even wristwatches. Find koa at Martin & MacArthur and in galleries across the Islands.

Talent is talent, says Gerard Marti. The creative urge can hit an artist in more than one way. “They are just gifted; they are artistic in many ways.” “They” are icons of musical history and pop culture. “Originally they did it for themselves between tours, as a hobby.” Artwork by individual members of The Beatles (all but George) hangs in Marti’s gallery, as do the colorful, sensual floral photographs of Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) and portraiture of Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones). Aerosmith frontman and American Idol judge Steven Tyler has his paintings here; his daughter, the actress Liv Tyler, is a terrific photographer. Marti, who is Parisian, came to Maui amidst his own flourishing career in the music recording industry. A lover of art, he decided to open a gallery. Using his background and connections in music, he struck a chord with collectors and fans alike. “Most of the galleries here had similar stuff, like palm trees and turtles and fish. I used my connections to open a gallery filled with artwork by famous musicians and actors.” Sunlit Lane by While it’s thrilling for most people to stand in the same space as their idol, what excites James Scoppettone Marti is developing the collection. “I love what I do. In the music industry, I was in charge of development, finding new talent. It’s almost the same thing now. I deal with entertainers … famous and successful. But as artists they are more or less beginners.” Célébrités Gallery attracts connoisseurs of all types, including some of the most recognized faces in Hollywood. Online at CelebrityFineArt.com.
