Ours has been a family business that started with Phil Rose, our founding publisher, selling advertising for a company called Guest Informant. He then started his own book, the Reno/Tahoe Visitor, in 1974. Both lakes – one stark and salty, the other a pristine alpine jewel – are each beautiful in their own ways, bracketing the turbulent waters of the Truckee like parentheses in a many miles long sentence. It’s worth it to take some time to explore these 100 miles, and to take in everything the Truckee has to offer in between.

SHOWTIME! When it comes to casino entertainment in this state, people’s heads automatically swing south, gawking at the glitzy glamour and blinged out beauty of the Las Vegas Strip and rubbernecking at all the big names plastered on the marquees shimmering in the desert heat.

But while Vegas may wear the casino entertainment crown these days, we in the northern part of the state can claim some bragging rights of our own: Reno invented the big casino show (take that Vegas) and we happen to think we still do them better than anywhere else. Dating back to Reno’s days as a haven for wealthy divorce-seekers, the city’s historic showrooms have hosted nearly every major entertainer (and most of the minor ones) over the past 50 years. These are stages where Frank Sinatra and Eddie Fisher crooned, where Jerry Lewis and Elvis rocked, where George Burns and Sammy Davis, Jr. cracked up your parents, and where today’s rockers and comedians keep up the tradition of big shows in small, intimate venues.

Also shocking to many people is that Reno-Tahoe offers world-class entertainment beyond the walls of our casinos. It’s true. Out past the glowing neon and ever-ringing slot machines, the region is chock full of professional performing arts companies and theaters putting on amazing shows. On any given weekend you’ll find the hottest new indie rock band playing at one venue, a new play being staged at another, a touring Broadway show somewhere else, and Shakespeare being performed to adoring crowds digging their toes into a beach at Lake Tahoe. No matter what your taste in music or theater, in Reno-Tahoe you’ll surely find a performance so good you’ll want to give it a standing ovation.

Harrah’s Reno named its former Headliner Room after its most popular and most frequent star Sammy Davis, Jr. Sammy’s Showroom now hosts a series of revues, tribute acts and comedians. It opened in 1966 with Eddie Fisher, and has since featured performers like Jerr y Lewis, Wayne Newton, Bobby Darin, and even for one week Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and Trigger. 1 This summer features a combination of hypnosis and dance with the adult revue, “Persuasion.” In Reno’s Eldorado Hotel-Casino, there is a veritable jewel box of a theater, clearly offering unobstructed views of the stage from tiers and balconies. The attraction through August 3 is “Man in the Mirror,” a tribute to Michael Jackson with special effects, multimedia displays and an international cast of singers and dancers. August 7 through November 4, look for a revue featuring the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons with a large cast of singers and dancers accompanied by video projection. It’s tentatively titled “Oh, What a Night!”

The most sumptuous of all the showrooms is at the Grand Sierra, seating up to 2,000 and featuring a full-acre stage with multiple side stages and descending platforms. It has hosted huge revues, most notably the 11-year run of “Hello, Hollywood, Hello,” still considered by many to have been the ultimate in casino show grandeur. It now hosts shows on a more occasional basis, but they tend to be major attractions, like cellist Yo Yo Ma, Florence and the Machine and Liza Minnelli. Even if there is no show scheduled, this is a room to drop in and see.

Reno’s Silver Legacy also features entertainers on a regular basis in its Grande Exposition Hall, recently refurbished for more comfortable seating. The Silver Legacy books a number of wideranging acts, from Martin Short to Foreigner, Willie Nelson to Lisa Lampanelli.

The nearly 10,000 seat Reno Events Center has become the location for some of the biggest names in entertainment as well as a location for many conventions. In recent months, it has hosted the likes of Jeff Dunham, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and some Lucha Libre USA Masked Warrior battles.

Keep in mind also that there are two comedy clubs operating an average of six nights a week: Catch a Rising Star in the Silver Legacy and The Improv at Harvey’s Tahoe.

Both the Atlantis and the Peppermill host occasional big-name entertainment, especially on holiday weekends.

Live at the

LAKE! When it comes to live music, Lake Tahoe has its own scene. The South Lake casinos bring every kind of act imaginable – the hottest new bands, big name comedians, 60s and 70s nostalgia acts, international DJs – to their historic showrooms. The longest-lived showroom in the region is at Harrah’s Tahoe where the venerable South Shore Room still features entertainment on a regular basis. Opened in 1959 with Red Skelton as the headliner, the room has hosted the likes of George Burns, Bill Cosby, Johnny 1 Mathis, Don Rickles, Michael Crawford, Liza Minnelli – and in the early days talents like Marlene Dietrich, Eleanor Powell, Kathryn Grayson, and Jimmy Durante. It made the entertainment history books in 1976 when it boldly booked Frank Sinatra and John Denver together. The South Shore Room now features a mix of classic rock bands and blues players on Saturday nights, and after the performances and

on other nights of the week is converted into the lake’s most popular nightclub, Vex. T his summer the big ge s t entertainment at the lake will be at Harvey’s where the outdoor amphitheater will host, among others, Chicago with the Doobie Brothers on July 13, Brad Paisley July 28 and Sugarland August 18.

But if you’re up at Tahoe and you’ve had enough of scruffy rockers and jet-set DJs, then head over to the north shore for the inaugural season of Lake Tahoe SummerFest. With three weeks of classical performances featuring musicians from some of the nation’s leading orchestras, SummerFest promises to be one of the premier classical musical festivals in the country. Performances will be held in the concert tent nestled

amidst the towering pines on the lakeside campus of Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village. Concerts are Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30pm and Sundays at 3:00pm, from July 31 through August 16.

Because Reno is so solidly associated with gaming and divorce in the international eye, it comes as a bit of a jolt that it also hosts some of the finest classical music ensembles in the country.

RENO! In the 1960s through the 1980s, the area’s major casinos all employed orchestras to back their entertainers. But as the house orchestras slowly died away the musicians did not. Instead they formed the core of what today are some of Reno’s proudest establishments – the Reno Philharmonic, the Reno Chamber Orchestra and Nevada Opera.

The Reno Philharmonic has grown into a top-notch orchestra currently under the direction of Maestro Laura Jackson, who came to town after three years as assistant conductor of the Atlanta Symphony and two years of guest conducting for orchestras in Bournemouth, England, Winnipeg, Canada and the Philippines. This summer they will perform as part of the Artown Festival in July, and next season embark on another six-concert series culminating with a performance of the Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 5. Performances are at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. The Reno Chamber Orchestra is under the direction of Theodore Kuchar who also conducts the Janacek Philharmonic, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Venezuela and the Fresno Philharmonic. Their performances are in Nightingale Hall at the University of Nevada, Reno, widely regarded as one of the most acoustically-perfect performing spaces in the country.

Nevada Opera was founded by Ted and Deena Puffer whose translations of famous librettos have been used worldwide, including at the New York Met. It has a long tradition of presenting both classical (“Madame Butterfly,” recently), light (“Pirates of Penzance”), new (the world premiere of “Mark Me Twain” and the first United States presentation of Tchaikovsky’s “Queen of Spades”) and the unusual (this past season Benjamin Brit ten’s rarely-produced “Vanessa”). Nevada Opera has sent many singers out into the larger world, most notably the famed international Verdi mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick. Nevada Opera is full of surprises, such as when last year they presented intimate chamber performances of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Trial by Jury” in a historical Reno courtroom.

The month of July in Reno is known for a couple of things. The first is the unrelenting daytime desert heat. The second thing is way better: Artown. Artown is a month long celebration of, you guessed it, the arts. It began in 1996 as a way to reenergize downtown Reno, which was starting to get a little down on its heels. Since then, with strong support from local government, civic leaders, business people and the arts community,

The AVA Ballet Company presents several full-scale dance productions a year, including the traditional holiday “Nutcracker.” The Reno Jazz Orchestra is composed of 21 of Reno’s veteran musicians, players who have backed Pavarotti to Elvis, and players who have traveled with the likes of Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Count Basie, and Stan 2 Kenton. They play what they like to call “night club big band jazz” in several performances a year.

Artown has become a raging success. Though Wingfield Park in downtown Reno is the hub of all the action, Artown events are held at venues all over the city. You’ll find performances and exhibits in small clubs and restaurants, casino showrooms like Grand Sierra Resort and the intimate, outdoor Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch. Over the years, internationally acclaimed performers such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Ringo Starr, Joan Baez, Jazz at Lincoln Center and the American Ballet Theater have taken the stage at Artown. And it’s not all about performing arts. The Stremmel Gallery and the Nevada Museum of Art have hosted exhibits from Jean Dubuffet, Joan Miro, Andy Warhol, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and Edward Hopper. Now in it’s 40th year, the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is the premiere theater event in the region. Staged at picturesque Sand Harbor, the Shakespeare Festival offers theatergoers a chance to see world-class performances while they dig their toes in the sand, enjoy a gourmet picnic and pop open bottles of wine.

This year features what promises to be an exhilarating staging of “Two Gentlemen from Verona,” one of Shakespeare’s most hilarious comedies. The venerable Reno Little Theater has just opened a new space on Vassar Street. Although by definition “amateur” theater, their productions are consistently polished and they don’t shy from challenging material – their first production in their new building was Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Downtown Reno hosts two companies – Bruka Theater and the Good Luck Macbeth Theater Company. Bruka is located in a former retail space, reconditioned considerably to house an intimate theater setting with tiered seating composed of a mix of former movie theater seats and sofas. Its presentations tend toward the eclectic, last season for 26

instance hosting both the recent Broadway reconfiguration of “39 Steps” and “The Wild Party.” Good Luck Macbeth, located a couple of doors down on Reno’s Virginia Street, defies augury with its title, both using “good luck” which is supposed to bring bad luck in the theater and “Macbeth” which is usually referred to as “The Scottish Play” in the theater. So far, it’s been working pretty well for the young company, but also so far they’ve avoided posting signs encouraging whistling in the dressing rooms.

Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts » The Pioneer Center is the home of our area’s most prominent per forming ar ts organizations: the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, Nevada Opera Association, Reno Concerts and A.V.A. Ballet Theatre.

The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts hosts an annual “Broadway Comes to Reno” series which has in the past included national touring companies of shows like “The Producers” and “Beauty and the Beast.” The upcoming season is set to include “West Side Story” and “Les Miserables,” among others.

With the first of nine concerts set to premiere on Friday, August 3, 2012, an expansive 500-seat outdoor concert tent will welcome Maestro Joel Revzen, Artistic Director

and Principal Conductor for SummerFest Concerts. He will conduct a world-class orchestra comprised of musicians from the New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Seattle Symphony. Revzen brings extensive experience to the festival, having recorded with the London Symphony, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Moscow Symphony and the Aspen Music Festival. SummerFest Concerts are scheduled the weekends of August 3-5, August 10-12 and August 17-19, with most rehearsals open to school children to provide exposure to classical music. Family concerts will be featured each Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm and concert themes include “All About Beethoven” and “Summer in Italy”. Food and wine will be available for purchase onsite. Ticket prices are $85 for VIP seating, $50 in the Guest section and $25 in the Friends area. For well over a decade Reno-native Will Durham has worked to acquire a stunning collection of vintage neon signs—the majority of them from Northern Nevada establishments. Nostalgic symbols of a bygone era, the signs in Durham’s collection once hung proudly on some of the region’s most memorable restaurants, casinos and hotels. Salvaging these signs took years of persistence, but Durham recognized that saving them was crucial to preserving Nevada’s history and that sharing them with the public was even more important.

This exhibition surveys contemporary art made by American Indians in the Great Basin and Sierra Nevada region. In January 2011, the Nevada Museum of Art, in association with the Pyramid Lake Museum/ Visitors Center in Nixon, Nevada, issued a call for artists to submit works addressing issues relating to concepts of the changing environment. The purpose of the project is to encourage the creation of new artworks in a range of media.

The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum, known by its fans as The Discovery, opened to the public in September 2011. The 67,000 square foot discovery museum houses eight permanent, but ever-changing galleries that range from Nevada’s rich and interesting history, to the interests of Da Vinci, to the water cycle in the Truckee Meadows. One of the most popular attractions at The Discovery is Cloud Climber, a three story tall climbing structure shaped like northern Nevada’s unique cloud formations. In addition to the museum’s galleries and exhibits, The Discovery also offers art and science-related family classes on the weekends.

Golden Eagle Regional Park is the largest public works project in the history of the City of Sparks! The 100-acre project includes six softball fields, two baseball fields, two youth baseball/softball fields, a stadium-size soccer field, two multi-purpose fields and two concession stands.

The Discovery serves families with children of all ages. The average visit is about 4 hours, but regular visitors will tell you to come prepared to stay all day if your children want. Another popular feature at The Discovery is Picnic Place, a room set aside for families who wish to bring their own lunch or snacks to enjoy while visiting the museum. Picnic Place also offers a nice selection of vending machines. There are plans to add a restaurant to the museum in mid- to latesummer 2012. Pyramid Lake is the largest remnant of ancient Lake Lahonton. It is the only place on earth that the prehistoric Cui-ui (qwee-wee) fish is found. Built in 1867, the building functioned as the station house for the Storey County Volunteer Fire Department. This was the first fire house with mechanized equipment on the Comstock. Hand engines, a ladder wagon, hose carriages, uniforms, belts, helmets and other artifacts are on display.

Walk in the shoes and explore the stories of generations of Comstock students in this elaborate 1876 Victorian, authentically preserved, four-storied wooden schoolhouse. The 2012 season for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad has rolled into town. The V&T initially re-opened the Historic Route in 1972 under the ownership of the Gray family who have preserved the railway’s heritage. The largest alpine lake in the world, Lake Tahoe is one of America’s treasures. No matter the weather, you’ll find kayakers bobbing up and down, practicing spins and rolls in the rapids around Wingfield Park in Reno and Rock Park in Sparks. If you happen to get bitten by the river bug while you’re here, it’s super easy to get out on the water. There are lots of outfitters in the area who will have you careening down rapids and doing Eskimo rolls in no time. But maybe whi t e wa t e r isn’t your thing. If that’s the case, then you don’t have to go far to find flatwater f o r f i s h i ng , f l o a t i ng , swimming or boating. Lake Tahoe is, of course, the most perfect, most amazing destination for anyone with a jones to get out on the water. Just rent a kayak, jet ski or a paddleboard and you can explore parts of the lakeshore

If you’re stayIng downtown, you’re just steps away from some of the best urban whItewater In the country that go unseen by the average visitor. But there are plenty of other lakes in the area that fly a little further under the radar. Like nearby Donner Lake. Right off I-80 just west ofTruckee, Donner is a pristine little gem which you’ll have all to yourself most days of the year. For a completely different experience head north to Pyramid Lake. Equal parts haunting and majestic, Pyramid Lake is famous for its tufa formations and the rare and sometimes monstrous Lahontan cutthroat trout. If you’re there and you see fishermen casting from ladders near the shore, don’t worry, you’re not hallucinating – some anglers swear that it helps them cast further and helps them land those Lahontan lunkers. If a green run is still too advanced and you really don’t feel like getting your hair wet, there are hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails all over the area. There are easy nature trails that’ll give you a little taste of the great outdoors and there are serious multi-day treks that will take you up and down nearly every peak in the Tahoe basin. If your style is more two wheels than two feet, there are mountain biking trails for every ability.

Plus, some ski resorts open their ski slopes to mountain biking in the summer. No uphill slogs required either. Head up the mountain on the lift, and on the way down you’ll get a lesson in exactly how gravity works. If that still sounds a little too hardcore for your tastes, there’s still no excuse to spend every second indoors loading up another plate at the buffet. Grab a set of clubs, crank up a cart and head out for a round of 18 on one of the 50 golf courses within 90 minutes of Reno.

You could play a different course every day for weeks and never see the same thing twice. There are courses in the desert, courses in the mountains, courses with water and courses set in lush pine forests, many designed by golf legends like Jack Nicklaus and Robert Trent Jones. Remember, you’re at altitude, so your drive will look a heckuva lot more impressive here than at sea level. And speaking of impressive drives… if you’d like to see a few, check out the Reno-Tahoe Open at the Montrêux Golf and Country club. Each Summer (July 30-August 5 in 2012) some of the PGA’s top pros come to Reno to try and bag a piece of a $3 million purse and not get distracted by the jaw-dropping mountain views. There’s plenty more to do, of course. But we figure that if once you start exploring what our great outdoors has to offer, you’ll probably keep going, finding newer and more epic adventures with each visit. So go outside and play. Entering its 14th year, the PGA TOUR’s Reno-Tahoe Open will showcase a new look when it returns to Montrêux Golf & Country Club, July 30 – August 5. For the first time, the tournament will use the Modified Stableford scoring system in determining its champion over 72 holes. Unlike traditional stroke-play events on the PGA TOUR, where a player’s position is based on his score relative to par with the lowest score winning, the Modified Stableford system is points-based with players either gaining or losing points based on their score on each hole. A

player can earn as many as eight points (double eagle) on a given hole or lose as many as three points (double bogey or worse). Eagles are worth five points and birdies two points while bogeys lead to the loss of one point. Unlike most golf tournaments where the player with the lowest score wins, players at the Reno-Tahoe Open will be shooting for high point totals this summer.
