than the capacity of all of the man-made reservoirs in the U.S. combined.

Maximum depth of Lake Tahoe is 1,645 feet with an average depth

The lake’s surface elevation is approximately 6,220 feet with the Tahoe basin’s tallest mountain, Freel Peak, topping out at 10,891 feet.

A Rich History

Tahoe’s been a summer mecca since the 1800’s

The earliest inhabitants of the Tahoe Basin were the nomadic predecessors to the Washoe, Maidu and Paiute Indian Tribes. These peoples existed during the Middle Archaic Period and appear to have returned to the area seasonally to collect medicinal plants, hunt, fish and create stone tools.

In time, three bands of the peaceful Washoe Indians became regular occupants of the Tahoe shoreline during the summers. They found spiritual significance in the beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains and waters teeming with fish. Early European-descended explorers and settlers of the area found them a peaceful nation, with extraordinary basket-weavers, creating works impressive both technically and aesthetically. Some outstanding examples can be found at the Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum, next to the Gatekeeper’s Museum in Tahoe City.

The name “Tahoe” is a mispronunciation of the Washoe Native American name for Lake Tahoe, “Da ow a ga,” which means “edge of the lake.”

For decades, white and native races lived more or less harmoniously during Tahoe summers, the Washoe spending summers as they had for millennia along sections of the West Shore and packing up in fall to head to lower elevation winter camps in present-day Northern Nevada.

The Tahoe Region transformed dramatically with the discovery of Comstock Lode silver in Virginia City. Opulent resorts were built in Tahoe City—Tahoe Tavern Hotel & Casino—and Brockway Springs Resort in Kings Beach. A narrow-gauge railway connected Tahoe Tavern to the Intercontinental railway in Truckee, the tracks extending down the hotel’s pier to meet steamers and launches that plied Tahoe’s waters to an increasing number of popular resorts and vacation cabins.

While the growth did bring an end to the Washoe presence at the lake—the tribe was granted reservation land near their wintering grounds in Carson Valley—Tahoe’s oldest inhabitants have

recently made a partial return. Washoe Tribe members manage Meeks Bay Resort and have access to their traditional medicine gardens and ceremonial grounds nearby, as well as 25 acres near Skunk Harbor on the Nevada East Shore.

Between the world wars, Tahoe’s fame as a world-class resort continued to grow. CalNeva Resort Casino opened at Crystal Bay in 1926 and became famous soon after for attracting Hollywood celebrities like Clara Bow. Purchased in 1960 by Frank Sinatra, the property was frequented by his fellow Rat Pack, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. among them, as well as Bobby Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe. A series of underground tunnels connected certain guest cottages to the casino so that celebrities and gangsters alike could move unseen between them. Eventually, it was proven that Chicago mobster, Sam Giancana, was a guest of the CalNeva and Sinatra lost his gaming license.

Nearby, Crystal Bay Club Hotel & Casino opened in 1938 and Tahoe Biltmore Lodge & Casino in 1946. Crystal Bay Club remains a popular destination for gaming, entertaining and dining.

Tahoe Biltmore is scheduled to be replaced with a new resort development, Boulder Bay, over the next few years. CalNeva has been closed for renovations but was recently purchased by software

billionaire, Larry Ellison, who has not yet disclosed his plans for the property.

While North Tahoe remained largely a summer resort for most of this period, skiing was launched at Granlibakken Resort near Tahoe City in 1922.

Sugar Bowl Ski Resort opened in 1939 on Donner Summit with the first gondola lift on the West Coast. The transformation of this area into a world class winter destination started in earnest with the 1960 Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley.

The games were the first to be televised live and helped spark the growth of skiing throughout the country. You can still revisit those exciting days, even in summer, with a ride up the Squaw Valley aerial tramway to High Camp’s Olympic Museum.

Other popular historic spots worth a visit include the Tahoe Maritime Center and the Watson Cabin Museum, both in Tahoe City, the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion at Sugar Pine Point State Park and Vikingsholm Mansion at Emerald Bay State Park. Walk through the historic Transcontinental Railroad tunnels and along China Wall off California Highway 40 on Donner Summit, then stop by the recently renovated Emigrant Trail Museum at Donner Memorial State Park.

North Tahoe has an ideal “climate” for golf: sunny warm days, beautiful scenery and highelevations where the ball just seems to travel forever. It’s also fun experiencing holes which both golf and Hollywood elite have played.

Tahoe City Golf Course opened in 1918, designed by May “Queenie” Dunn, America’s first female golf instructor and, with the construction of the Tahoe City links, its first female golf architect. In the 1950s, the 9-hole course became a favorite of comedian Bob Hope and the multi-talented Sammy Davis Jr. Scenic and affordable, the course appeals to both beginners and seasoned golfers.

This short network of paved trails inside Sugar Pine Point State Park is ideal for family exploration. Three different interpretive trails wind through a forest of tall, widely spaced trees or along the park’s shoreline. Climb a grassy hill up to the lovely Hellman-Ehrmann Mansion or visit its historic boathouse. Nearby, a small creek mouth cuts through a sandy beach, and picnic benches dot the pebbly shoreline to the south.

Shirley Creek creates a magical landscape of falling, tumbling water as it travels down its steep canyon from the Sierra Crest. People and dogs maneuver a sometimes narrow trail that climbs precipitously up and over boulders. You’ll want to stop to catch your breath at many of the lovely waterfalls, which cascade into deep, cold granite pools (where the brave or the furry can cool off).

Young or elderly hikers might need a hand at a few points on the climb, but the path is well-worn and largely friendly to all generations. Make it all the way up to Squaw Valley Ski Resort’s High Camp

The start of the Tahoe Yosemite Trail begins in a wide, watery meadow with multiple creeks and ponds before climbing up to Desolation Wilderness’ mountain lakes. If you and pooch need more, climb a mile up to Phipps Lake or 2 miles to Phipps Peak’s 9,234-foot summit. Since this trail enters wilderness, you’ll

The Tahoe Rim Trail is rated one of the best walks in the country by outdoor and travel media every year. There are a number of spots where day-hikers can conveniently access the ridge-top route, but one of the easiest is in Tahoe Meadows off Nevada State Route 431. Departing from this northern point, the Rim Trail heads south to some of Tahoe’s most spectacular views. There are a number of spots with views of scenic ridges that can serve as impromptu destinations for out-and-back hikes. Or head one-way all the way to Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park and descend a sandy road to Incline Village. Mountain bikers are only allowed along this entire route on evennumbered calendar days.

One of the most accessible sections of the famous Pacific Crest Trail is south of Donner Summit near Truckee. Head south from one of many parking spots and you’ll soon be climbing up a wooded ridge toward Mount Judah, then to Mount Lincoln or beyond to peaks stretching toward Tahoe.

Take a comfortable out-and-back hike or go “peak bagging” all day to Squaw Valley. Near the hike’s start are the first Intercontinental Railroad tunnels, chiseled through solid granite by Chinese laborers in the 1860s, now abandoned and ripe for exploration (take a flashlight and a friend).

This charming and historic town at the outlet of the Truckee River has numerous shops, restaurants and recreational options, all within easy walking distance along the Lake Tahoe shoreline. During summer, cafes and restaurants spill out onto the patios, sidewalks and decks, serving a wide range of cuisines from family-value to fine dining. Boutiques and shops dot Tahoe City’s main street and Boatworks Mall, above the marina.

Kings Beach/Tahoe Vista Those looking to have a laid-back day at the beach will enjoy this fun and charming stretch of North Lake Tahoe. Bring a picnic and settle in for a lazy summer day on the sand, or stroll the shoreline and dine under umbrellas.

South-facing and sun-soaked from dawn to dusk, this is Tahoe’s banana belt and its wide beach is particularly popular with families. Parking is available adjacent to the King Beach State Recreation Area, with numerous kayak, paddleboard and other water toy rental operations nearby, A favorite paddling excursion is east to Crystal Bay point. Or just paddle around in the sandy shallows that extend well into the lake, where you’ll find some of Tahoe’s warmest waters.

North Tahoe Regional Park offers miles of trails for hiking and biking, tennis courts, an 18-hole disc golf course and large playing fields for soccer and other sports. Or test your skills on the bridge or zipline courses that run through the trees at Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park. Nearby, Tahoe Adventure Company offers paddleboard and kayak rentals at Tahoe Vista Recreation Area boat launch. Or play a round of golf or miniature golf.

West Shore The peaks of the Sierra Crest tower over Tahoe’s azure waters on this beautiful and serene stretch of shoreline. West Shore includes the small communities of Sunnyside, Homewood, Tahoma and Meeks Bay, as well as marinas, picnic grounds and three state parks. Summer recreation abounds: waterskiing, paddleboarding, hiking, mountain biking and more.

Sugar Pine Point State Park is the site of the lovely and historic Ehrman Mansion and grounds. Bliss State Park has a wonderful sandy beach and granite coves and cliffs. There is world-famous scenery at Emerald Bay State Park as well as a short hike down below Eagle Falls to a Norwegian “castle,” Vikingsholm.

A lovely bike path runs along much of the length of the West Shore through forests, past beaches and lake views, restaurants and delis. The West Shore is lined with multiple marinas offering boat, paddleboard and jet-ski rentals.

Incline Village/Crystal Bay At one time, Incline Village stood at the site of the Comstock era’s Great Incline Railway. Today, the town boasts shopping, restaurants and spectacular estates along Lakeshore Boulevard.

Stores, boutiques and dining options are found in various locations around the community, including the large Raley’s Shopping Center and nearby Christmas Tree Village, both located along Highway 28.

There is easy access to high-mountain hiking trails off of Mt. Rose Highway 431 with a spectacular viewpoint a few miles above Incline. Just out of town to the east, the Flume Trail offers mountain bikers a thrill ride on single-track far above the lake. Spend a perfect Tahoe day at Sand Harbor’s fabulous beaches and catch a Shakespeare play there at night on one of the world’s most beautiful stages. To learn more about someone who might have been a Shakespeare character, eccentric millionaire George Whittel, tour Thunderbird Lodge, the estate he built complete with secret tunnels and the legendary Thunderbird yacht.

For outdoor adventure, hit the mountain bike park at Northstar California Resort or access hiking trails (complete with geocache stashes) via gondola or chairlift. Mountain bike trails range from scenic pedals to advancedonly terrain and jumps. Northstar’s mountain bike resort is the largest in Northern California.

Hiking trails heading out from the resort lead to lake views or sweeping panoramas of Martis Valley. Leashed dogs are welcome on lifts and trails.

The Village at Northstar is the center of energy during the summer, with an outdoor roller-skating rink surrounded by restaurants and cafes, live music often playing on the outdoor stage. There is a two-screen movie theater nearby, as well as miniature golf, gem panning, a kids climbing wall and bungee trampoline. Northstar’s golf course is a beautiful 18-hole layout curving through the forests.

Northstar has a number of events and festivals throughout the summer and fall, from Beerfest and Bluegrass to Autumn Food and Wine and an Enduro World Series race. Check out Tahoe Star Tours’ evenings under the night sky, then cozy up next to one of the quiet fire pits surrounding the village rink.

Truckee The historic Old West town of Truckee is less than 15 miles from North Lake Tahoe. Its downtown buildings are wonderfully preserved and house a wide variety of modern boutiques, restaurants, watering holes, galleries and shops.

Truckee and its environs played a seminal role in the opening of the American West, first as a stop on the route pioneers took to California, then as the site of the most difficult phase of track-laying of the first Intercontinental Railroad. It was once a notorious frontier town, the center of the ice industry and, more than 100 years ago, the site of one of the West’s first winter mountain resorts.
