Greetings, Friends and Visitors,
Welcome to St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, spanning 84 square miles of stunning beaches, lush hillsides, tropical rainforests, and breathtaking vistas.
Steeped in history, our island’s twin towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted invite you to step back in time at landmarks like Fort Christiansvaern and Fort Frederik, monuments to the diverse cultural tapestry that defines both St. Croix and the entire Territory.
Whether you’re drawn to charming boutique hotels, luxurious resorts, or intimate bed-and-breakfasts, you’ll be embraced by the warmth and hospitality of the Crucian people, who embody our signature “Vibe Like No Other.”
Recently named the Caribbean’s top culinary hotspot by Caribbean Journal, St. Croix offers flavors shaped by global influences, from Caribbean and Amerindian to Spanish, Dutch, French, and American.
For adventurers, the island is a playground: hike through rainforests, kayak along mangroves, ride horseback on the beach, set sail on turquoise waters, tee off on scenic courses, or dive beneath the waves. With world-class snorkeling and scuba diving, including Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S., you can even experience five unique dives in a single day. At dawn, early risers are rewarded with the first sunrise in America at Point Udall, the easternmost point of the U.S.
St. Croix comes alive year-round with vibrant celebrations, from our monthlong Crucian Christmas Festival, complete with a dazzling Boat Parade and Crucian Christmas Festival, to a calendar filled with cultural fairs and community events.
On behalf of the Department of Tourism, we welcome you to explore, savor, and celebrate with us. May your time on St. Croix be unforgettable, and we look forward to your return!
Jennifer Matarangas-King Commissioner Nominee Department of Tourism
ST. CROIX
A VIBE LIKE NO OTHER
Come discover the unique culture and vibrant spirit of our island. St. Croix is home to historic sites, gorgeous beaches, luxurious resorts and golf courses. Our culinary scene was honored as the 2025 Caribbean Culinary Destination of the Year. We can’t wait to welcome you to America’s Caribbean Paradise.

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.
St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.
St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.
St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.
Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

Through the Eyes of a St. Croix Majorette
with Dr. Dana Philogene
The St. Croix Majorettes are an institution of female performing power that has graced parades on the island for decades. When a Majorette steps onto the street with her glittering sequined uniform catching the sun to the carnival beat, we feel the rhythm of St. Croix moving through us. Being a majorette isn’t just about twirling a baton or keeping perfect lines. It’s about representing the pride, discipline, and Crucian spirit of this island that raised us.
I remember watching the older girls perform at the Crucian Christmas Festival Parade. They exuded precision, grace and power. I wanted to be just like them. I joined the Majorettes when I was ten. Over the years, I learned that every baton twirl, spin and perfect catch comes from hours of practice, from teamwork, and from the joy we share when the crowd cheers us on.
Majorettes are storytellers in motion. We start with discipline: listening skills, standing at attention, punctuality and respect. Then we learn to engage with the audience, to invite viewers into our performances with our presence, smiles and expressions. When the road march starts, our performance speaks of tradition, strength, and island unity. During parades, I see little girls watching, eyes wide, and I know I’m helping them dream bigger. That’s the best part: knowing we inspire others the way our predecessors inspired us.
It’s not always easy. There are sore muscles, long rehearsals, and the pressure to stay sharp. But there’s also sisterhood: the laughter, the shared hair spray bottles, the last-minute pep talks before stepping out, and connections that last beyond the rehearsals. Every spin and strut becomes a celebration of who we are: confident, creative, and disciplined young women.
Being a Majorette taught me that performance is power. It’s a way we express our culture, connect generations, and carry forward the beauty of St. Croix. Long after the drums quiet down, that rhythm still lives in my heart. It is steady, proud, and unmistakably Crucian.
Dr. Dana Philogene is currently the Cheerleading Coach at St. Croix Educational Complex and an accomplished career educator. She still maintains her Majorette connections to her sister twirlers! For more information visit stxmajorettes.com

Each December, as twilight settles over Christiansted Harbor, the island of St. Croix begins to shimmer. One by one, boats awaken from the dark — first a glow, then a blaze of color — until the water itself looks alive with light. This is the St. Croix Christmas Boat Parade, a beloved island tradition that transforms the harbor into a floating festival of joy.
What began years ago as a small community celebration has become one of the most anticipated holiday events in the Virgin Islands. Captains spend weeks decorating their vessels with thousands of lights, garlands, and animated displays for this friendly competition. You’ll see dozens of boats, from humble fishing dorys draped in gold to towering yachts crowned with twinkling stars, each one reflecting its constellations across the calm Caribbean water.
For over twenty-five years, the boat parade has brought friends and families together for a night of wonder and delight, dancing with Moko Jumbies under the stars to the bright melodies of the St. Patrick Steel Orchestra. Local vendors sell Crucian Christmas foods, keepsakes and holiday treasures, while children run along the docks waiting for Santa to make his grand appearance by sea. Nadia Bougouneau, chair of the St. Croix Christmas boat parade, puts it simply. “We want to give back,” she says. “That’s our ultimate goal.” The event, with its VIP viewing section and community donors, raises thousands in donations annually for the Caribbean Center for Boys and Girls, Project Promise, the St. Croix Youth Association, and the World Ocean School.
When the parade begins, a collective cheer rises from the shore. The boats circle through the harbor, each one greeted with applause and shouts of approval. So, what’s in it for the winners? “Bragging rights!” Nadia says, laughing.
And who can join the parade and try their luck at the competition?
“Kayaks are welcome!” Nadia says, merrily. Anything that’s able to float, it seems, is fair game, as long as it’s maneuverable and, of course, decorated to the nines. Admission is totally free, and each boat even receives a small stipend up front to help.
Christmas by the Sea: THE MAGIC OF ST CROIX'S BOAT PARADE
By Claire Goodman
The night ends with a spectacular burst of fireworks over the water. Reflections ripple across the surface in bursts of color. In that moment, it’s clear why this event holds such a special place in the island’s heart: it’s not just a parade, it’s a shared celebration of creativity, connection, charity, and Caribbean cheer.
“I’ve been the president of the Boat Parade for about 15 years,” explains Trish Rhodes. “I’ve always loved Christmas. My mother‘s birthday was Christmas Eve! As a child I was the one putting up the Christmas tree and decorations. And I will tell you it is so special for me every year as soon as the first boats come around the corner by the fort, and everybody starts to cheer and take pictures…I cry, I guess I’m just a sap, but Christmas is always been very special in my heart.”

LOCAL, HANDCRAFTED JEWELRY A MUST!
The level of artistry and creativity on St. Croix knows no bounds. Known as the Twin City island, we are off the beaten path of the rest of the island chain; and so have developed an artisanal, handcrafted way of thinking about our goods, our food, our choices and our culture. Wander quaint covered porticos and lively streets – on one of St. Croix’s guided tours or on your own – enjoy the waves lapping at the waterfront as you sip a drink or a meal between browsing. In Christiansted to the east, through mid-island’s historic buildings and all the way to Frederiksted in the west, pop into art galleries, clothing and jewelry stores, gift shops and sports stores. You’ll enjoy a day discovering the stories of our island entrepreneurs and multigenerational family businesses, and finding a special treasure or two. Don’t forget to practice your “Good morning”, “Good afternoon” or “Good night!”

Masquerading Traditions KEEPING ALIVE
By Stephanie Chalana Brown
When I reach our bantaba, our weekly gathering of motion, the first thing I feel is the drum.
The basketball court at the Caribbean Boys and Girls Club in Frederiksted becomes a wide circle of rhythmic return. Parents lean on the bleachers, children weave between the basketball court and the bleachers, and adults arrive straight from work. The drummers from Dembaya Arts Conservatory begin soft, then build until the whole neighborhood feels the call. The drum doesn’t invite, it commands.
These gatherings are not rehearsals for a show or spectacle. They are lessons in how to listen, how to move, how to remember. The youth haven’t begun costuming yet, that will come later. For now, Dembaya’s instructors guide them through storytelling, memory, and call-and-response.
Masquerade on St. Croix has always been both shield and mirror. Long before anyone called it festival, our ancestors used dance to close the harvest and honor the solstice. The old May Festival was gratitude made visible, a release after the long cane season. The winter celebrations, shaped by African and European belief, became the Christmas Festival we know today.
Figures like the moko jumbie, John Bull, and Mother Hubbard carried that power into the street. They could bless, warn, or mock authority. Masquerade gave working people a language for what could not be said aloud. By the mid-1800s, town parades held art and protest in the same breath.
When the Crucian Christmas Festival became official in 1952, that old energy shifted again. Troupes like Eve’s Garden, Cane Cutters, and Gentlemen of Jones stitched humor and critique into sequins. Together they remind us that Festival was more than spectacle. Festival was a bringing together of people and memory.
Newer groups such as Guardians of Culture, Lockhart & Associates, Simply Sophisticated, Regal Dynasty, Sanctuary, and Carnival Bellas add modern style while carrying older stories.
When I led Sanctuary Festival Troupe, we tried something in-between, a hybrid masquerading costuming that mixed tradition with the boldness of the present. Some elders
embraced it, others questioned if the sacred could survive such change. I understood both sides. It is hard work advocating for a more traditional spirit of masquerade in a time so shaped by exposure.
Masking traditions are among the oldest forms of human expression. Each tradition draws from African, European, and Indigenous memory. Everywhere, the mask bridges the living and the unseen.
Here on St. Croix, some characters need awakening, like the raffia dancer, the Bull, the Clowns, but they are not gone. The children in our gatherings may not yet know their names, but their understanding of them is waking up. When the drum starts, feet answer.

“KC” Henry
As the Special Projects Coordinator for the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, I’m dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of our islands. My lifelong passion for traditional arts—especially Quadrille dance and Quelbe music—continues to guide my work and inspire my service to the community.
One of my proudest achievements is co-coordinating the annual “Revival of Quadrille in Our Schools” program, which brings traditional dance into classrooms across the Virgin Islands. Seeing students embrace our heritage and move to the same rhythms their grandparents once did reminds me why this work is so important.
In 2007, I founded the Ay-Ay Cultural Dancers, a group dedicated to keeping Quadrille vibrant through performance and education. I also serve as an activities coordinator with Ten Sleepless Knights, Inc., supporting cultural programming and sharing my experience in the many forms of Quadrille.
I later launched The Quadrille Fest, which celebrated adult dance groups and fostered intergenerational exchange, and I now coordinate the Ten Sleepless Knights Forklift Festival, a community event that unites music, dance, and heritage.
Alongside my cultural work, I’ve earned multiple Associate Degrees in Early Childhood Education, Teaching, Educational Leadership, and Administration. These studies strengthen my ability to connect culture, education, and community.
Every event, lesson, and dance is a reminder that our traditions are living art forms—and it’s my mission to help them thrive for generations to come.

Malek Bascombe
I’m a fine art photographer from St. Croix and founder of MRB Photography. People often say I have a keen eye for mood, culture, and expression. Photography isn’t just my profession — it’s my calling. You’ll find me wherever the island comes alive: at parades, festivals, and in the rhythm of everyday Crucian life.
I began my professional journey in 2011 with portrait photography, but my lens soon found its voice across genres — from quiet studio portraits to the vibrant pulse of street life.
I attended Central High School, where photographer Lee Lashley became my greatest influence and mentor. He taught me that photography isn’t about taking pictures — it’s about creating images that captivate, that speak, and that last longer than the moment itself.
My portrait work spans musicians, dancers, corporate professionals, models, students, families, and wedding parties. Yet my deepest love lies in street photography and photojournalism — capturing fleeting, unrepeatable moments that define who we are.
Festival has always held sacred meaning for me. My grandmother, Jessica Tutein Moolenaar, was the first Festival Queen of 1952. Now, through my camera, I continue that legacy — documenting the joy, movement, and resilience of the Crucian spirit. To photograph Festival is to honor memory, community, and the blessings that bind us.
To young photographers, I say: find mentors who inspire you, ask questions, stay curious, and invest time in refining your craft.

CHRISTIANSTED WALKING TOUR
Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.
Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.
Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.
The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.
Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.
Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.
The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.
Across on King Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.
CHRISTIANSTED
Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.
Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Christiansted National Historic Site
Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park System in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.”
Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.
Frederiksted Map Frederiksted Map
Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.
A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.
Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.
The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.
The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.
Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church
The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.
WEST END ATTRACTIONS
Tour an early Danish homestead, the Lawaetz Family Museum at Estate Little La Grange on Mahogany Road. Plantation ruins offer visitors a tranquil backdrop for peace and contemplation at the Mt. Washington Labyrinth , 2 miles north of Frederiksted. Open every day, year-round. The entrance gate is to the left when you reach the property and parking lot. The Whim Museum , on Centerline Road, is the site of a former sugar cane plantation and temporarily closed. St. George Village Botanical Garden also on Centerline, showcases on 16 acres of ruins of a former sugar plantation 1500 native & exotic species. Award-winning Ridge2Reef Farm , on Creque Dam Road, is a USDA Certified Organic Farm with produce, tours, and workshops. The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is .5 mile beyond the west end of the Melvin H. Evans highway. See St. Croix Map, Pg 54 for location.

MAXIMIZING Vacation Rental Success on St. Croix
By Sharifa Garcia, Founder & CEO, Our Home Rentals
The short-term vacation rental market on St. Croix is thriving, with more than 1,000 Airbnb listings and steady demand from travelers seeking authentic island experiences. As a native Crucian, I’ve seen firsthand how this growth brings opportunity for investors and challenges for property owners trying to stand out in a competitive market. Guest expectations are higher than ever. Travelers want beautifully presented homes, fast responses, and insider knowledge that makes their stay memorable. For off-island homeowners, delivering that level of service while staying on top of pricing shifts, turnovers, and guest needs can be daunting.
Owners who succeed in this environment embrace tools and strategies that elevate the guest experience and adapt to seasonality. Dynamic pricing helps maximize revenue during peak season (November–April) while keeping occupancy steady during slower months. Guest digital guidebooks make stays seamless, and clear communication helps ensure five-star reviews that drive repeat bookings.
With travelers looking for unique, well-managed spaces, St. Croix remains a promising market for homeowners willing to invest in the guest experience.
Sharifa Garcia is the Founder & CEO of Our Home Rentals. She was born and raised on St. Croix and has over 20 years of experience in customer experience leadership. Contact her at info@ourhomerentals.com or visit www.ourhomerentals.com.
