Creativity connects generations

Our Libraries’ Intergenerational Art Program aims to give individuals a way to connect, learn, and inspire through creative expression. You don’t need to have any artistic experience.

So, if you are over 55 years and would love to get creative with younger people, join us for our monthly sessions at Mornington, Rosebud and Hastings Libraries. Numbers are limited so bookings are essential.

Edition #34 Autumn 2024

Guide Dogs Puppy Raising on the Mornington Peninsula

Guide Dog Puppy Raiser Ashley Baumann has developed an impressive strike rate with raising working Guide Dogs and Therapy Dogs.

Currently the family has 14-month-old Effie. “Effie is superb when she is in her coat, but as soon as she is out of her coat and she sees another dog her first reaction is hyperexcitement - she thinks it’s playtime,” Ashley says.

Fortunately, a Puppy Development Advisor is on hand to answer any questions and give advice. Guide Dogs Victoria also hosts enrichment groups for Puppy Raisers, with the Mornington group proving a popular way to socialise the puppies and meet fellow raisers.

“It’s always hard to let go but knowing that this dog will help guide someone with blindness and low vision makes it easier” says Ashley.

Register your interest in becoming a Puppy Raiser online or contact Guide Dogs Victoria: 1800 804 805 vic.guidedogs.com.au/become-puppy-raiser/

Travel your own backyard: Discovering the Peninsula

At all stages of life, it’s important to nourish our minds and bodies with enriching experiences.

While extravagant travel may seem enticing, exploring your local region offers equally rewarding adventures, especially if you have time, mobility or financial constraints.

There’s the beautiful Point Nepean National Park at the southernmost tip of the Peninsula. The Cape Schanck Lighthouse walk offers a combination of history, culture and spectacular views; with designated parking and nearby amenities. Continue along the trail to the first section of the Two Bays Walking Track, featuring a lookout with spectacular views.

For more information on leisurely walks, visit us at the Mornington Peninsula Visitor Information Centre (359B Point Nepean Road, Dromana) or call us on 5950 1579

Carer Health and Wellbeing Service Changing the Focus Project – Dementia and Physical Activity

Monash University and Peninsula Health are commencing a new free Carer Health and Wellbeing Service that aims to enhance the health and wellbeing of carers in the community.

Being a carer can be demanding and isolating. The role can impact on the carer's own health and wellbeing.

We are seeking people who are aged 50 years or older caring for someone 65 years or older to participate in a personalised service that helps carers set and achieve health and wellbeing goals.

The voluntary carer program is available to people who live in Frankston or the Mornington Peninsula region of Victoria.

For more information contact Dr Aislinn Lalor: aislinn.lalor@monash.edu 9904 4412

Monash University’s Rehabilitation Ageing and Independent Living Research Centre is seeking people with mild dementia or cognitive impairment to participate in a personalised 12-month physical activity program called ‘Changing the Focus’. The program is available to people who provide their consent to participate (or with the support of a carer) and live in Frankston or the Mornington Peninsula. You will be supported by physiotherapists and/or exercise providers throughout the program.

For more information, contact Dr Angel Lee: angel.lee@monash.edu 9904 4662 or Ms Lisa Licciardi: lisa.licciardi@monash.edu 9904 4350
