Why I Love Morningside

I

Would you like me to say what I think this College will be? … Morningside College has only begun its work.

Just a few years have told the story up to this point.

What you have done is just the earnest money, just a sort of pledge of what is going to be done here tomorrow. For these trees are only half grown – there isn't a full-size tree on the campus. We have only 30 acres of ground, while lying around us there are untold buildings lying in the hearts of the people …

But then this country is not populated yet.

Tomorrow the millions are going to occupy our soil … and you are going to have a larger campus and this campus is going to be covered with buildings and, as the years come and go, the multitudes shall gather from the prairies and the surrounding country … And as they gather through the years, you will provide for them ...

The fathers who have built this College so far, have given of this spirit to their sons and daughters who will keep the fire burning on the altar.

No band of students could ever occupy the place in my heart that you do, and this faculty who have stood amid storm and shine, worked amid poverty and discouragement, and when we have come back defeated, your prayers and your counsels, your sacrifices have put new courage and victory into our hearts. God bless the faculty of Morningside College, the ministers and the laity and too, that band of men who have gathered close about us.

Notable Morningside wins big at history conference Morningside College students attended the Phi Alpha Theta history honor society regional conference at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and won half of the Best Paper in Category awards presented at the conference. The conference drew participants from the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, North Dakota State University, Northern State University, Wayne State College, Creighton University, Mount Marty College and Dordt College.

Accounting Club receives service award The Morningside College Accounting Club received the Iowa CPAs Month of Service Team Community Impact Award from the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants. Club members helped with the Siouxland Humane Society’s annual Pets on Parade event, volunteered at the Food Bank of Siouxland to pack food into backpacks for grade school students and helped Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Siouxland organize its annual tour of homes fundraiser.

Morningside honored at theater festival Morningside College was one of six schools from a seven-state region invited to fully remount a theater production at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Sioux Falls, S.D. Students performed “Trifles” twice at the conference for over 1,000 college students, faculty members, and other nationally recognized theater artists. Morningside also received The Golden Hand Truck Award for best overall load in and load out for the production.

Ag Club recognized as one of best The Morningside College Ag Club competed against schools like the University of Minnesota and received first place in professional development and second place overall at the 91st Annual National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.

Students Cassy Huiras and Jacob Holck had 10 slides to tell the story of the Morningside College Ag Club. For professional development, they shared club activities such as a career night, a career fair and industry tours.

Vice president for Rick Wollman retired as vice president for communications in May after working at Morningside College for 12 years. But his relationship with Morningside actually started earlier, just after the arrival of President John Reynders on campus 20 years ago.

Wollman worked for Morningside as a consultant at that time, helping to keep the community informed about changes happening at the college, such as the transition to a new athletic conference.

“I remember we met with the news folks at the TV stations and the newspaper,” Wollman said. “John got an opportunity then to lay out for them his vision of what Morningside could be and what changes Morningside needed to make to be successful.”

Wollman went on to work at Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City until the fall of 2007, when Reynders persuaded him to come to Morningside.

“I was thrilled when Rick joined the Morningside team, as he brought a level of professionalism to the public relations office that was unparalleled in our history,” Reynders said.

communications retires “Rick quickly took on a number of different roles overseeing the print shop, mailroom, central scheduling and coordinating our 125th celebration, and as was always the case, did so with his quiet, caring leadership style that made him so effective. Over the years, Rick has nurtured meaningful connections with the media both near and far, and he and Jenny Thomas can take pride in advancing the quality and reach of The Morningsider.”

Wollman spent nearly 40 years working in various public relations, investor relations and corporate communication positions in Sioux City.

Early in his career, he worked as a reporter and editor for the Sioux City Journal.

“Rick Wollman was a great colleague and member of the senior staff team,” said Dr. William Deeds, who recently retired as provost. “He coordinated many significant events and effectively handled all media relations.”

Wollman said his position at Morningside included the unexpected perk of meeting some famous people. He got to pick them up for the Waitt Lecture and then take them back to their

hotel later that evening.

“What other kind of job would you have had the opportunity to pick up Ken Burns or have tacos with Ben Stein or talk to Doris Kearns Goodwin?” he said.

Wollman said his favorite part of working in higher education was being around the students.

“It’s fun to see how excited and involved students get,” he said.

“Particularly here at Morningside, it’s just amazed me how many different things individual students are involved in. I mean, Morningside students definitely are involved, not only in academic things but a lot of co-curricular things – much more than I ever was back in college.”

The Morningside College Student Council contracted to bring former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt to campus in 1954. Local criticism arose because she had been labeled a communist by followers of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. Even so, over 1,500 people paid to hear her speak.

The editor of the Collegian Reporter said, “The Morningside College student body really went to bat for its school, its student council, and the freedom of speech.”

Morningside adds new programs to better personalize As a small private college located in a thriving community like Sioux City, Morningside has a distinct ability to offer a truly personalized college experience tailored to the unique interests and goals of a student.

Three new programs that will roll out in fall 2019 are designed to build on that strength.

X Path, the Educational Enhancement Program (EEP), and Adventure are all programs that allow students with unique interests and needs to take advantage of personalized opportunities and gain more experience earlier on in college.

“We are reaching out to different populations of students with these programs,” said Dr. William Deeds, who recently retired as provost. “We expect these programs to increase the diversity of our student body in many ways, and that’s good for all of our students.”

X Path was designed as Morningside’s version of being undecided on a major. It gives students the ability to explore and consider their future, but the difference is

that it offers a structured process to explore interests and ideas that matter to the student, said Dr. Alden Stout, associate vice president of academic affairs.

Students on the X Path also have access to Morningside’s XP Guarantee, which is offered to all Morningside students and is the college’s assurance that students will graduate in four years or less and have a job or head to graduate school within six months of graduation, so long as they meet basic requirements.

EEP is an invitation-only initiative designed to help incoming freshmen who are identified during the admissions process. The intent of the program is for students to gain confidence as they begin their Morningside experience.

“There are students who have a lot of potential and want to go to college but whose previous academic work or test scores may not accurately reflect their ability,” Stout said. “We want to still give them an opportunity to be successful in college.”

Morningside College professor receives Fulbright Scholar Award Dr. Heather Reid, professor of philosophy at Morningside College, received a Fulbright Scholar Award for Teaching and Research in Naples, Italy, from December until May. Reid was hosted by the University of Naples Federico II. Founded in 1244, it is the oldest public university in continuous operation. Her award was sponsored by Con il Sud, a foundation that promotes development in Southern Italy.

Reid studied the phenomenon of female athletes in Olympic-style games in Naples during the Heather Reid imperial period. Lists of winners from Sebastà games that took place during the first century of the Common Era were recently discovered while excavating a metro station. The lists included several women who competed in 200- and 400-meter events and came from as far away as Ephesus in modern Turkey. Reid believes that female athletes demonstrated virtues associated with the mythological figure Atalanta to prospective spouses in the Greek-speaking part of the Roman Empire.

“My hope is that an understanding of ancient female athletics may help us appreciate the distinctive value of women’s sports today,” she said.

Reid is a specialist in ancient philosophy and the philosophy of sport. She has published six books related to sports philosophy and the Olympics. She also directs a semester abroad program in Sicily for Morningside students. A member of the Morningside faculty since 1996, she received her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

college experience EEP students will arrive at Morningside a few weeks ahead of time to become accustomed to the campus, beef up study skills, and learn about resources and options available to them as a Morningside student. As a cohort, they will work together throughout their first year at Morningside while focusing on their academic success.

The Adventure program is for students who want the flexibility and autonomy to develop their own educational experience. The program builds off of learner-centered programs already offered at the high school level. It will give students the freedom to do everything from designing their own major to taking project-based coursework that focuses on solving real-world problems.

Students in the program will receive a travel stipend to apply to a May Term course or study abroad.

They also will have the opportunity to build a

co-curricular resume focused on real-world skills like leadership, civic engagement and career development, and they will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty to conduct research in their interest areas.

“Every Morningside student brings their own set of interests and ideas to the table, and all three of these programs allow students to build their time here in a way that works for them,” said Steph Peters, director of admissions. “These programs really build off what we are already good at while giving us an opportunity to get in front of some new students and families who may not have previously known us.”

The new Adventure program at Morningside College will give students the freedom to create their own unique college experience.

Students in the graduating class of 2019 commemorated the 125th anniversary of the college’s founding by preparing a time capsule that will be sealed and stored for opening by the class of 2044 during the college’s 150th anniversary.

I

Longtime tennis coach retires As the last tennis ball fell to its final outcome this spring, so did a historic coaching career.

Longtime men’s and women’s leader Larry Mason 1973 retired at the end of 2018-2019, leaving behind a legacy.

He began as men’s coach in NCAA Division II from 1974-1976, took the helm of the Mustang men’s and women’s programs from 2008-2017 and led the women’s team from 2017-2019.

“The wins have been fun to be a part of, but seeing the academic success has always been important,” Mason said. “Our women’s team has had the best grade-point average on campus in each of the last 10 years ... 46 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Scholar- Athletes and 10 Google Cloud Academic All-Americans. I’ll still be around and am open to helping out in any way possible to allow the athletic program's awesome run in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and NAIA to continue.”

Mason and his family are forever a part of the tennis complex, with it being named in their honor. A 66-year association with the college began when his father, the late Rev. Dr. Charles Mason, came to Sioux City in the early 1950s and went on to serve on the Morningside College Board of Directors.

“I’m a Morningsider through and through,” he said. “It’s been an absolute thrill being connected with so many tremendous young men and women, not just on the tennis courts but also in seeing their lives lead to amazing things.”

MUSTANGS CLAIM EIGHTH GPAC ALL-SPORTS TROPHY

While it wasn’t loud or boisterous, there was cause for celebration in Morningside’s athletic department at the completion of the 2019 Great Plains Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships.

The Mustangs claimed their eighth Great Plains Athletic Conference all-sports trophy and the sixth since 2011-2012, continuing an impressive stretch of success.

Tim Jager, Morningside’s athletic director, called it “a tribute to the hard work of so many people on campus.

From the coaches to the athletes, support personnel, the faculty, the list goes on and on. It truly tells one of the stories of how special Morningside College is.”

The driving force behind the traveling trophy staying on campus was a spring campaign in which the Mustangs captured a share of the loop softball title and the men’s and women’s golf championships. Adding to that were conference championships in men’s basketball and football and a share of the wrestling dual crown along with postseason first-place finishes in softball and wrestling.

Points are awarded on a decreasing scale based on the finish in each of the GPAC’s 21 championship sports based on either final regular season standings or the results in conference championship meets. Ties are not broken for the distribution of all-sports points.

It was an exciting year, as the Mustangs won the 2018 NAIA Football National Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Veritable Van Goghs Lacrosse coaches excited to create masterpiece of a program Ben Morhac leads a practice with the women’s club team.

By Mark Adkins Little fanfare … deep study of composition … adding tones and textures.

Tucked away in the basement of Lewis Hall, two men have the paints and brushes out to put together a masterpiece they call lacrosse.

Morningside College’s venture into men’s and women’s competition officially takes the field in 2019-2020. However, the original blank palate has impressions for the future. Keith Lindgren, the men’s head coach, and Ben Morhac, the women’s head coach, are using diligent brush strokes in putting their teams together, finding good fits for Morningside College on and off the field, and finite touches in regards to strategy and a playing surface for practicing and games as examples of a solid base. With each color, their picture begins to come into view.

To gain their artistic coaching tools, the two had to become students themselves.

“I love the history of the game,” Lindgren noted. “It's the oldest sport in North America, as Native Americans played it in many fashions, mostly calling it stickball. I’ve come to find out as you learn the history – which Ben and I had to during the era we got involved – the passion (for the game) follows.”

Three key concepts allow the tandem to be excited about Mustang lacrosse.

The first is the game of the Eastern “blue bloods” and the new style in the West are pushing together, creating new opportunities.

“I’ll use an example of the University of Utah moving into a DI program,” Morhac said, noting lacrosse growth in the western United States. “When you have that type

of interest at that level, others will start to look at it.

Even in Iowa in Division I, there are just club teams, but they have top-notch athletes coming in (to play). We’re getting questions all the time about our programs, so, yes, I think this area is fertile for lacrosse. It’ll be interesting to see what style comes out of the East and West coming together here.”

“We’re in sort of the last frontier (for the game),” Lindgren added. “However, the athletes showing interest tell us this area will fill in quickly with high-level play.”

Secondly, it is a sport for everyone.

“There’s not a specific build or type to an athlete,” Lindgren noted. “Anyone can play it, and there is literally a position chance for everybody on the field. As with other athletic success, the amount of work you put in on your own determines how high you can go. For instance, if you go out and play catch against a wall, you’ll see results.”

Lastly, they’ve been in the shoes of their future athletes, each having played and developed a strong passion for lacrosse.

“I’d played baseball my entire life, and, honestly, was burnt out on it,” Lindgren reflected. “One of my classmates during freshman year of high school told me about lacrosse.”

“You try every sport as a kid, and then high school rolls around and you have to narrow your choices down,” Morhac said. “I needed something in spring after football and hockey. Lacrosse was new so I tried it, and being used to physical sports, the action and pace were exciting.”

Worth remembering

What does it mean to be a Morningsider? Many things.

It means founding the first women’s college in China in 1908. It means welcoming Japanese-American students from internment camps during World War II. It means traveling to Alabama to join Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a march for voting rights.

“If you’re at a school for four years, you may not have a sense of the history of the institution,” said Christie Vos, adjunct librarian at Morningside.

But take the time to consider the overall history of the college, and “it gives people the sense of being part of something much larger,” said Adam Fullerton, library director.

Morningside College celebrates the 125th anniversary of its founding in December of this yyear.

He died suddenly in 1934 during a trip with students to an international relations conference in Grinnell, Iowa.

And it is easier than ever to learn about the history of the college, thanks to a revitalization of the archives.

It all started about 10 years ago when Kent Watkins 1958, a managing editor of the campus newspaper in the 1950s, suggested that the college digitize Collegian Reporters, making them available to the public on the Internet and keyword searchable. He made a donation, and that support helped the college obtain a grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa Historical Resource Development Program.

Later, Morningside digitized all of its yearbooks with help from Watkins, Jim Hindman 1957 and the Sioux City Public Museum. The English department helped digitize Kiosk, the college’s art and literary magazine, and the college is currently in the process of digitizing The Morningsider.

Wilma (Tolles) Strong 1932 earned this Women’s Athletic Association sweater while a student at Morningside College. A 1925 article in the Collegian Reporter says, “The Women’s Athletic Association of Morningside College has been a member of the National Athletic Conference of American College Women for the past year. There are at present only 115 colleges in the U.S. belonging to the A.C.A.C.W. and Morningside is indeed proud to be in this class.”

A 1934 article explains that women earned a sweater by participating in eight practices in any seasonal sport and playing in two tournament games.

Morningside publishes updated history book

The physical archives are located on the third floor of the library.

To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the college’s founding, Morningside published an updated college history book by Dr. Timothy Orwig 1980.

More than half of the photos in the new book did not appear in the centennial version. It includes new or expanded stories from the first 100 years of college history – about Morningside’s first staff member, early African-American students, Morningside aviation programs, Japanese-American students during World War II, civil rights marchers in the 1960s, Col. Bud Day 1950, Hwa Nan Women’s College and more.

It also documents the transformation that has taken place on campus over the past 20 years, which involved major renovations of most campus buildings, moving parking lots to the periphery, construction of the Academic Village, and updating and expanding athletic facilities.

“Even more important, it shows the growth of the student body, the exponential expansion of graduate and online programs, and the wealth of new opportunities for students,” Orwig said.

Timothy Orwig Orwig taught and was an administrator at Morningside College starting in 1986. That was when he wrote the centennial version of the college history book. ce “We “W were coming up on the centennial,” he said. “There was interest inter in writing a history, and I basically volunteered for it.

I had a history minor and an English major as an undergrad, and I’d long been interested in the history of the college.”

When it came time to update the Morningside College history book, he took that same approach.

“The idea of a photographic approach really came from Morningside,” Mo Orwig said. "History comes alive in those d dramatic photographs."

Head of the Class Dr. William Deeds wasn’t looking for a job 19 years ago when he was asked to apply to be vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college at Morningside.

He applied for the job as a favor to a friend, and during the interview process, fell in love with the school.

He also got along well with new President John Reynders, and he thought they could form a good partnership.

“Morningside at that time was having some serious financial problems, so people kept saying, ‘Why would you go there?’” said Deeds, who was later promoted to provost. “I said, ‘Well, this president’s got a plan, and I think it’s going to work.’”

Deeds retired in May after a period of growth at Morningside that rivals any other in the college’s history.

He played a key role in helping Morningside prosper by strengthening the college’s academic programs.

“I contend that in the 125-year history of Morningside College, there has never been a more effective leader than Bill in the role of chief academic officer,” Reynders said.

from three-credit to four-credit courses, allowing for more in-depth study. Morningside was one of the first colleges in the Midwest to make this change, giving the college a distinctive feature to attract students.

Deeds lightened the faculty course load so professors had more time to work one-on-one with students and to focus on the quality of their teaching. He also added May Term, where students could learn through travel with professors, or they could stay on campus to study interesting topics not offered during any other term at the college.

“For a lot of our alums, their May Term experiences are their single best memory, so that’s been a neat part of the curriculum change,” Deeds said.

Deeds increased faculty salaries from below average when he arrived to on par with or even above salaries offered by peer institutions today. He also instituted merit pay. These changes helped the college to attract and retain high-quality faculty members.

Deeds is proud to have hired more than 80 percent of the current faculty.

“If you look at the faculty that have been hired since Bill’s been here, we have people who are active, people who are interested in looking at new ways to teach, new ways to do things, active in their disciplines,” said Randy Campbell, an associate professor of computer science who served six years as president of the Faculty Senate. “He should get a lot of credit for the quality of the faculty because of the hires he’s done over the years.”

Colleagues on the senior staff described Deeds as a person you go to for advice. Ron Jorgensen 1979, vice president for business and finance, said he is a hard worker and a team player who has a great sense of humor.

life and enrollment, said he is “everything you want in a colleague and friend.”

Deeds supported student development both inside and outside the classroom. He attended countless college events, mentioning the first national championship in women’s basketball and the first national championship in football as highlights.

His wife, Pamla Hoadley, made her mark on campus as well. She assisted the college several times as a project manager, even designing the Spoonholder Café in the Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Learning Center. She also joined campus groups and went on college trips.

Deeds worked for almost 20 years at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., and for almost 20 years at Morningside.

But his impact goes well beyond these two schools.

He worked with several associate deans at Morningside who went on to become chief academic officers at other institutions. Dr. Susan Burns, a former associate dean at Morningside who is now vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, said he was a great role model.

“I have worked very hard to be a mentor to the people who report to me and provide them with opportunities to develop personally and professionally as Bill did for me,” she said.

Deeds received the 2016 Chief Academic Officer Award from the Council of Independent Colleges. The national award recognized his significant support of colleagues at independent colleges and universities, his role as a mentor to many new chief academic officers, and the work he has done at the institutions he has served.

His influence most likely will continue. He is looking at moving to a retirement community affiliated with Furman University in Greenville, S.C. After that, he is open to doing some consulting.

Just a few weeks ago, Curry said she was still trying to wrap her head around the fact that Deeds was leaving.

“He’s such a good man,” she said. “Most people at Morningside don’t know the place without him.”

Graduating from Morningside Dr. William Deeds put a lot of heart into his work as provost.

Just look at the care he took in planning the college’s commencement ceremony.

Deeds considered college graduation to be an important life event comparable to ge ing married or having a child. He believed that significant life moment should have a significant ceremony. So he put in the time to make sure he correctly pronounced the name of every student who walked across the stage, even ge ing in touch with individual students to verify.

He pushed to move commencement outside, where it is pre ier, there is no limit on guests, and the se ing is more kid-friendly. Instead of flipping tassels, Morningside now hoods graduates so it’s different from high school, and the college brings in noteworthy individuals to give commencement speeches.

This year Deeds gave the commencement speech because he was receiving an honorary doctorate from the college, an honor that he said “means more to me than any other I have received.”

In his closing comments, Deeds told graduates that Morningside College is continuously improving.

“One of the reasons for that is that you graduates have le Morningside College be er than you found it because of the things you have done while you were here. I hope I have also le Morningside College be er than I found it because of what I have done. Congratulations, graduates, and I wish you all the best. Thank you.”

Walker Awards

Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Awards Outside evaluators selected the recipients. Criteria for selection included teaching excellence, effective advising, scholarship and service to the college during the previous academic year.

Dr. Suzanne Hendrix-Case is an assistant professor of music who joined the faculty in 2016. She consistently receives outstanding student evaluations, even hitting an overall number of five on a five-point scale at various times. Students benefit from her real-world experience and knowledge. She performs in solo roles at the top opera houses in the world. Last year she won the top prize from the Wagner Society of New York. She has created valuable relationships for Morningside College with media outlets. She also has assisted in raising funds and recruiting students.

Dr. Jessica LaPaglia is an associate professor of psychology who joined the faculty in 2013. She maintains very high student ratings in a range of courses. Other accomplishments include developing research projects that involved multiple students, overseeing students in internship activities, advising with more than two dozen students, developing a writing course for freshmen, developing and teaching an online course, writing part of the Higher Learning Commission review document, number-crunching assessment data for the entire college, and acting as chair for an important faculty committee.

Dr. Twyla Rosenbaum is an associate professor of accounting who joined the faculty in 2003. She is always reaching for new milestones – creating new courses, implementing new programs and making new certification options available. As one colleague put it, “she is now leading our students into careers we didn’t offer just a few years ago.” She pushes herself as well, recently becoming a certified fraud examiner. She has taken on a role not typically expected of college faculty – acting as a safe haven for students who might otherwise feel marginalized and serving as an advocate and life coach for at-risk students.

Walker Awards

Lillian Dimmitt was “the backbone of Morningside” from the time she arrived on campus the year before the college’s founding until her death 72 years later, according to Dr. Tim Orwig 1980, college historian. She was a Latin professor and later dean of women, retiring in 1940 but continuing to teach classes in her home until the 1960s. In 1948, the college named the women’s dormitory Dimmitt Hall in honor of her. When she died in 1965 at age 98, she left the college her home at 3527 Peters Ave., which is now the Alumni House.

Thompson Staff Excellence Awards

Jonathan Blum 2001, director of planned giving and donor advising, plays a key role in strengthening the financial position of the college. He was instrumental in hitting the annual scholarship fund goal for the 14th year in a row.

His primary focus is the endowment. He secured almost $1.8 million in cash through estate gifts last year.

Adam Fullerton, director of library services, does a fantastic job facilitating student learning. He has increased classroom visits and individual support sessions to ensure students have the resources they need to be successful. He has led the effort to migrate the college to a new provider that will aggregate and organize the library’s physical and electronic materials.

Joan Mansfield, administrative assistant for the mass communication department, has an easy way with students. They frequently stop by her office to tell her good news or share concerns. It is her willingness to take on tasks above and beyond her regular duties that makes her especially deserving of recognition.

Zac Pace, area coordinator/ student activities coordinator, works closely with students, helping them grow as leaders. He has excelled at working with students in crisis. He creates a safe, comfortable and inclusive living environment for campus residents and has improved programs as adviser of the Morningside Activities Council.

Ron Stabile, assistant maintenance supervisor, goes out of his way to help others.

He possesses a vast knowledge of facilities and how to keep up with maintenance needs. He has the tough task of keeping the heat going in all of the buildings, dealing with everything from 60-year-old boilers to modern high efficiency equipment. He also keeps the bathrooms working on campus.

Georgianna Wolf, administrative assistant for the Nylen School of Nursing, goes beyond what is expected with tasks. She took the lead on securing state-to-state Board of Nursing authorizations, a complex task critical to the MSN program. As a result, Morningside became one of five approved programs in Arizona, leading to increased enrollment from that state.

There were similar results in other states.

Gail Ament, Ph.D., professor of Spanish, traveled to Chicago to evaluate Fulbright applications for English Teaching Assistantships to Spain and Portugal, and she gave a presentation at the International Conference of Hispanic Literatures in Santiago, Chile.

Jackie (Brummond) Barber 1995, Ed.D., dean of the Nylen School of Nursing, and Dianna Sorenson, Ph.D., professor of nursing education, gave a podium presentation at the Clinical Nurse Leader Summit in Tampa, Fla. The conference was sponsored by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Brandon Boesch, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy, wrote papers published in the academic journals Science & Education, Transversal, and Journal for General Philosophy of Science.

Eric Canning, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics, and Mitchel T. Keller, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics, gave presentations during a meeting of the Iowa Section of the Mathematical Association of America at Morningside College.

Shannon Claxton, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, and Jessica LaPaglia, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, gave poster presentations at the Society for the Teaching of Psychology’s Annual Conference on Teaching in Phoenix, Ariz.

Amanda (Van Meeteren) Haverhals 2003, M.S.N., assistant professor of nursing education, evaluated online simulations of clinical nursing experiences for Elsevier Publishing Company to ensure that the learning simulations were clinically accurate and in line with current practice standards.

Elizabeth Coody, Ph.D., assistant professor of religious studies, gave presentations at the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom at Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach, Va., and at the international conferences of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature in Denver.

Marilyn Eastman, Ed.D., associate professor of marketing, and Pam Mickelson, Ed.D., retired professor of business, gave presentations at the Marketing Management Association educators’ conference in Kansas City, Mo. LuAnn Haase, Ed.D., dean of the Walker School of Education, was appointed to

Pam Mickelson, Ed.D., retired professor of business, helped plan The Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization (CEO) Global Conference and Pitch Competition in Kansas

City, Mo. Eleven students attended the conference with her, and one was a finalist in the pitch competition.

Anni Moore, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, and Matthew Nieland 2018 led a workshop at the Canadian Society of Microbiologists conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Christina Triezenberg, Ph.D., assistant professor of English, presented a paper and organized panels at the annual Midwest Modern Language Association conference in Kansas City, Mo. She and two students also attended the Iowa Council of Teachers of English conference in Johnston, Iowa.

Vivian (Schoen) Isaacson 1980 retired as academic affairs coordinator.

She started working in the business office as a student and was hired to work full time immediately upon graduation. She had multiple responsibilities in the business office, including student loans and payroll. She also met her husband, Ron Isaacson 1982, who was a campus security officer. In 1999, she accepted the position of academic affairs coordinator. In this role, she established a number of office procedures, assisted two chief academic officers and numerous associate deans, and supervised work-study students. Many of these work-study students continue to be in contact with her today. Significantly, she oversaw 20 successful commencement ceremonies and was known affectionately as the “Commencement Czar.”

Terri Parish McGaffin, M.F.A., retired as associate professor of art. She had taught at Morningside since 1990, becoming a full-time faculty member in 2004. She has been an outstanding chair of the art department and director of the Helen Levitt Art Gallery, sharing her talents as an artist and her appreciation of art with both students and colleagues. Her service to Morningside is highly visible on campus through the exhibitions she has shared or curated, including works on display in the home of President John Reynders. She has provided great service to the faculty and the college as a member of Faculty Senate, the Promotions and Tenure Committee, and the Environmental Sustainability Committee, and to the community as a productive

artist and board member of the Sioux City Art Center.

Pamela L. Mickelson, Ed.D., retired as professor of business.

She had taught at Morningside since 1985, becoming a full-time faculty member in 1988. She influenced countless entrepreneurs as director of the Center for Entrepreneurship Education and adviser to E-Group.

Students she advised in Creative Edge Advertising Club gained real-world experience, helped community organizations and found national success in competitions. A leader in her field, she helped organize conferences and received national recognition for her teaching. She wrote the “Brand Builder Workbook” to help students or practitioners develop integrated marketing communications plans. She

also was a leader on campus as chair of the business department and as an active member of the Faculty Development Committee and Faculty Senate.

Laura (Lindgren) Staber 1984 retired as central scheduling coordinator.

Since she was hired in 2013, she has done an exceptional job coordinating the use of college facilities by on-campus and off-campus groups. She managed a team of over 30 students that performed room set-ups for meetings and events and operated the lights, sound and staging for events in Eppley Auditorium. She developed close relationships with the students, inviting them to her home for dinner and even visiting a recent graduate during a trip to Chicago. Faculty and staff members relied on her as a

source of information on upcoming events. She had connections across campus and was usually one of the first to know what was happening. Campus events have run smoothly in recent years largely because of her.

Doug Stanek retired as head men’s tennis coach.

Stanek joined the tennis program last year and led the team to a conference postseason tournament berth. A lifelong Sioux City resident, Stanek started playing tennis in the mid-1980s and developed into a high-level tournament player by winning over 20 singles and doubles titles in Open and A level events throughout the area. He previously held several positions during a 35-year career at Gelita USA, most recently as an information technology systems administrator.

Lois (Lind) Jamison attended Morningside College for her freshman year from 1943 to 1944. In November of 1944, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corp in Iowa City, Iowa. She graduated from the program in 1948 and was in nursing for 33 years. She has now been retired for about 35 years. She is 94 years old.

1953

Robert Bates has six children, 15 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

He is a 90-year-old Words with Friends master!

1957

Kenneth DeVries came to Morningside College from Sheldon, Iowa. He was a member of the Morningside College basketball team from 1953 to 1957. He has lived in Davenport, Iowa, since he got out of the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961. He has five children, 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Eugene and Arlis (Kuper) Gimer celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 1, 2018.

1964

Brendan Burchard is still teaching after 52 years, and he has taught at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux

City for 50 years. He also has coached football and track for 42 years.

1965

Dr. Tyrone Greive was awarded the 2018 Teacher of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Chapter of the American String Teachers Association in recognition of his many years of teaching and the many lives he has touched.

As one former student wrote, “I will forever be grateful to you for taking me on as a student. You were able to see what many others could not – that somewhere inside the small-town fiddler was a violinist … These days, I have nearly 300 students, including my orchestra students and private violin students … I keep the ‘Wichtel’s Young Violinist’ book you gave me on my desk at school and think of you often.” Greive taught for over 30 years at the University of WisconsinMadison and served for many years as concertmaster of the Madison Symphony Orchestra. He continues to occasionally perform and teach individual lessons and classes upon request as well as prepare violin performance editions for International Music Co. in New York.

Judy MillerQualley retired from her position as pastor of Peace United Methodist Church in Pipestone, Minn., and she and her husband moved to Valentine, Neb. In July, she will begin serving as a part-time local pastor for the United Methodist Church in Cody, Neb. Dave Stead retired in 2018 after 30 years as executive director of the Minnesota State High School League. He retired as the nation’s second-longest tenured leader of a state high school athletic association.

He remains with the league in a more limited capacity.

1966

Marcia (Cox) Ahlrichs lives in Rockwell City, Iowa. A retired music teacher, she now teaches piano in her home plus guitar, organ, ukulele or voice upon request.

Larry and Patrice (Nelson) Arndt 1968 celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in April 2019.

I 1970

William Hoversten was recently appointed by the Minnesota Supreme Court to a second four-year term as a Third Judicial District attorney member of the Minnesota Judicial Selection Commission. The commssion interviews and selects candidates to be interviewed by the governor for judicial appointments to the various courts of Minnesota. He was also named Boss of the Year by the Waseca Area Chamber of Commerce in Waseca, Minn., for his work at the Patton, Hoversten & Berg law firm.

1972

Dr. Bill Russell returned to Morningside College in February to talk about his career as a Tony-nominated lyricist and playwright. He directed his musical “Pageant” at Lamb Arts Regional Theatre in Sioux City in June, and then in July he will direct his musical “Side Show” at the Black Hills Playhouse in Custer, S.D. During his career, Russell has written 14 full-length shows.

His most recent musical, “Unexpected Joy,” was performed in New York and London in 2018.

1971

James Gunsolley was elected to the city council in South Sioux City, Neb., in November 2018. He also served 16 years on the South Sioux City Board of Education.

Gene Buccelli Jr. continues to teach adult Sunday school periodically and is chairman for the Sunday school’s curriculum committee. He and his son went on an Israel Bible Tour in February 2019.

Marjorie (Utesch) Hoppe has four children and six grandchildren plus spouses, and in total, they have 17 bachelor’s degrees, six master’s degrees and two doctorates. Her family believes in education. Hoppe was a teacher. She has been retired for 25 years and is now 98 years old.

Sharon Hawthorne was awarded the J. Frank Vance Distinguished Leadership Award from the Iowa Council of Administrators of Special Education during the organization’s fall conference in Des Moines, Iowa.

Hawthorne worked as a special education consultant for the Iowa Department of Education. She is now retired.

Connie (Adams) Hornbeck was elected chair of the Association of Community College Trustees at the organization’s annual meeting in New York City. The Association of Community College Trustees is a nonprofit educational organization of governing boards representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical and junior colleges in the United States and beyond. Esther Pauline and Pauline Esther Friedman, identical twins from Sioux City, came to Morningside in 1936, and they started a gossip column in the Collegian Reporter called “The Campus Rat” by “PE-EP.” Esther later became Ann Landers, and Pauline became Abigail Van Buren.

Ubben received the award for her support of students and their activities throughout her career as an Iowa school administrator. She served on the representative councils for both the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Iowa High School Athletic Association during her tenure as superintendent of the Winfield-Mount Union and Perry school districts.

The last class to wear beanies entered in 1969. Also in 1969, the college decided to allow students to have televisions in their rooms, and in 1970 the college made chapel elective rather than required.

As a member of the newly formed commercial credit delivery center, she underwrites and approves loans for businesses in Chicago. Prior to this, Samuelson-Wesely had been with Wells Fargo Bank in Arizona for 20 years in various business lending positions.

Larry Obermeyer is the director of resource development and special projects at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City.

Obermeyer has nearly 20 years of experience in

resource development for the Sioux City Railroad Museum, higher education institutions, and several other community and nonprofit organizations.

His efforts have resulted in nearly $100 million in grant awards and other fundraising. In addition to his professional work, Obermeyer serves as a railroad historian and historical researcher. His research has appeared in several peer-reviewed nominations to list former railroad properties on the National Register of Historic Places.

Janet (Liibbe) Young retired in the spring of 2018 after teaching high school math for 39 years. She taught for 31 years at West High School in Sioux City and for eight years in Jefferson, S.D.

Cindi (Stevens) Van Horn lives in Glidden, Iowa. For over 30 years, she has operated a desktop publishing company called Artistic Rose, where she creates products such as letterheads, business cards and invitations. She has been selling Tupperware through Cindi’s Tupperware since 1998, and last year she started her own Airbnb called Almost Home in Glidden. She and her husband, John, recently celebrated 25 years of marriage. They got their vows

Barry Fouts writes book about Morningside-Briar Cliff basketball rivalry Barry Fouts 1976 has written a book about the basketball rivalry between Morningside and Briar Cliff.

“River City Rivals” is available at the Morningside College Bookstore, which can be reached by phone at 712-274-5170 or online at store.morningside.edu.

While conducting research for the book, Fouts was able to talk to dozens of former players, both women and men who had played in the series, and all but a couple of the coaches.

The timeline extends from 1966 through 2018, covering the entire series

between the two schools.

The book shares personal stories of players and coaches, behind-the-scenes moments, and the hardships created by any athletic endeavor. The book also highlights several of the great games between the schools, including the very first men’s varsity game in 1973 and the final meeting between Amy (Wilhelm) Lefler 1987 and Cheryl (Dreckman) Carter, the most prolific scorers at their respective schools.

Fouts also gives an outlook for the rivalry going forward.

Fouts has written for Victory Sports Network, a

website devoted to NAIA Athletics, for most of the past 15 years. He is a member of the Football Writers Association of America and the United States Basketball Writers Association, specializing in NAIA coverage. He has watched numerous women’s and men’s games between Briar Cliff and Morningside over the years, though he missed a substantial period after moving from Siouxland to Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1987. He worked for a debt management firm in Omaha, Neb., for 27 years prior to his retirement in 2015.

Barry and his wife, Phyllis (Robertson) 1976, have been full-time travelers in their RV since his retirement. They have three adult children and a new granddaughter.

Yoko (Sakane) Ikeda is a co-author of “Genki,” one of the most-used Japanese language textbooks on the market. Ikeda is a professor at Ibaraki University in Mito, Japan. She previously taught Japanese at Eastern New Mexico University and Pennsylvania State University in the United States and Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata, Japan. Ikeda earned bachelor’s degrees from Morningside College and Kansai Gaidai University and a master’s degree in

comparative literature from Pennsylvania State University.

In 1989, the college built computer labs in all three residence halls and began renting laptop computers to students. Chad Sorenson is president of Adaptive HR Solutions in Jacksonville, Fla. He also is currently serving as president elect of HR Florida State Council, which serves as a resource on best practices in the human resource field for the public and for over 15,000 human resource professionals across the state.

Kelly (Bindner) Kohout is director of education services for the Diocese of Sioux City, a position formerly called assistant superintendent. She assists the superintendent with decisions about educational programs, spending, staff and facilities for the 16 school systems in the diocese. Kohout earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Morningside College. She has worked for the last eight years at Sacred Heart Middle School in Sioux City, where she taught English as a second language and was responsible for assisting teachers at all levels in the school system with differentiation and integrating technology.

Stephanie (Baddeley) Heller has been head coach of the volleyball team at The Meadows School in Las Vegas for 15 years. During that time, her teams have won three state championships and nine conference championships. They won back-to-back state championships in Class 2A in 2017 and 2018. by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds to serve as the state public defender beginning in March 2019. He worked in private practice in the areas of criminal, juvenile and family law until his appointment as chair of the Iowa Board of Parole in January 2018.

Dr. Elizabeth Coody (center), assistant professor of religious studies at Morningside College, gave presentations on religion, superheroes and comics in November at the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom at Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach, Va. While there, she met with Dr. Craig Wansink 1984, a professor of religious studies at Virginia Wesleyan University and a member of the Morningside College Board of Directors, and his father, John Wansink 1948.

John Reynders has embraced Morningside traditions as the 12th president of Morningside College, here enjoying a bean shower as he is welcomed to campus in 2000, just like President Luther Freeman was welcomed in 1911.

Reynders arrived during a time of change and uncertainty for the college. Morningside has prospered under his leadership, experiencing a period of growth to rival any other in the college’s history.

Hwa Nan Women’s College was the first women’s college in China, and it was founded in 1908 by Morningside graduates. In 2008, the Morningside College Choir toured China during May Term and renewed connections with Hwa Nan. May Term was created in 2003 to give students the opportunity to take courses not normally offered by the college.

Many students travel during May Term, while others stay on campus and study topics such as the science of cooking or the mathematics of baseball statistics.

Dr. Adrienne (Bielenberg) Rochleau was recognized by Morningside College as the 2019 Nursing Alumna of the Year. Rochleau began her career by earning an associate’s degree in nursing in 2002. She worked as a registered nurse while continuing her education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Morningside College. She decided to pursue a career in nurse anesthesia and went on to earn a master’s degree and doctorate. She worked full time as a certified registered nurse anesthetist until 2014, when she began working part time in the operating room so she could enter the academic side of the nurse anesthesia profession. She is currently the nurse anesthesia assistant program director at Clarkson College in Omaha, Neb.

Becky (Gerritson) Sanders is workers’ compensation claims support services supervisor at Great West Casualty Co. in South Sioux City, Neb.

Kerri Hulsebus has been a licensed professional counselor through the state of Illinois for over 10 years. She is currently the lead counselor for the Rock Island County Council on Addictions in East Moline, Ill. She facilitates groups, does individual sessions, helps clients learn life skills, and prepares them for independent sober living.

This is her 11th year working in substance abuse treatment through outpatient and residential settings. She has also worked with special populations’ therapy including mental health counseling and medicationassisted therapy.

GIVING BACK Grad uses law degree to make a difference

By Jenny Welp Thomas Samantha Wenger 2008 has been recognized as one of the top young lawyers in the Midwest. But as a senior in high school, she wasn’t even sure if she was going to college.

“I started off my freshman year at Morningside having really no clue what I wanted to do with my life,” she said. “Luckily I had one of the notoriously difficult professors take me under his wing my first year, Dr. Pat Bass.”

Bass saw her interest in political science and history and pushed her to challenge herself by taking more difficult classes. After some extra pushing by Dr. Lillian Lopez and Dr. Patrick McKinlay and encouragement from her “cheer squad” in Lincoln Center – Dr. Doug Livermore and Dr. Pam Mickelson – she accepted those challenges. Then one of her mock trial coaches, attorney Dan Shuck, got her an internship at Heidman Law Firm in Sioux City.

Wenger did so well at Morningside that she got an in-state tuition scholarship to the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law. She found some of the coursework there to be even easier than her law classes with Lopez at Morningside.

“I had all of this

self-doubt that made me scared to even apply to law school,” she said. “But once I got there, I was like, ‘This is a piece of cake.’ I was helping my friends understand how to draft a case brief.”

She got a summer job at Husch Blackwell in Kansas City, thanks to Shuck putting in a good word for her to a former colleague.

Her last year in law school, she was elected president of the student bar association.

A year or two after graduating from law school, Wenger was invited to serve on the board for Lawyers Encouraging Academic Performance (LEAP), a nonprofit organization in Kansas City that has raised almost $2 million for disadvantaged children.

Wenger revived a LEAP program where lawyers meet with kids every week to read or study. She also co-chairs the annual Back-to-School Breakfast fundraiser. This year that event provided over 500 kids with their school supplies and raised $4,000 in donations for school uniforms.

“Since day one of law school, I have been involved in the legal community and the Kansas City community at large,” she said. “That’s something that has always been important to me but was really pushed at Morningside by Dr. Patrick

McKinlay, who was always very much for community efforts.”

Wenger was hired by Husch Blackwell when she graduated in 2011 and moved to Dentons law firm in Kansas City in 2015.

She focuses on business litigation but also does pro bono work. She recently won asylum for a young Honduran child.

“He had seen so many of his family members and young friends brutally murdered that there was no question in his mind he would be killed if he had to return to Honduras,” she said.

“Winning that case very likely resulted in a young child’s life being saved.

That is, hands-down, the most important case I have won.”

Wenger has been named one of the Super Lawyers Rising Stars for Missouri and Kansas.

Only 2.5 percent of young lawyers are selected for this honor.

The process includes a statewide survey of lawyers, independent evaluation of candidates and peer reviews in the practice area.

She said she has advanced quickly because she was given the opportunity to communicate directly with clients early in her career. She said the partners seemed to

appreciate her “Iowa personality” and ability to relate to clients from a variety of industries.

“It always makes me feel like I must be doing something right when my Fortune 500 clients are asking for me by name when it comes to handling some of their most complex legal matters, even when there is no Harvard education listed in my bio,” she said.

I James LaPointe moved to Lincoln, Neb., in December 2017 to work full time for the University of NebraskaLincoln. He is employed there as a first-year financial aid adviser, and he is pursuing a master’s degree in higher education administration. He wants to be able to help those who are less fortunate and underserved and let them know that receiving a higher education is possible no matter the obstacle. He has been in that position and wants to make sure that students today have resources readily available to them to make transitioning into college, through college, and out of college as smooth as possible.

The lab works to understand genetically inherited diseases in children. It recognized Gandy in December as “a rising star in regenerative cardiovascular medicine” and reported that Gandy is developing the best method to use stem cells from umbilical cords to study cardiac development and repair.

Alexi Malatare is a counselor for Dismas Charities Inc. in Omaha, Neb. Dismas Charities gives men and women being released from state and federal incarceration the skills and motivation to re-enter society as contributing members.
