How do we make Morningside a better place for students? That is a question we ask ourselves every day. Over the last decade, we have completely transformed the campus, adding green space, residence life options, athletic facilities and more.

For the last several years, we have been focused on improving college facilities. If you think of the college as a computer, we have been updating our hardware.

That is still happening, certainly. This spring we broke ground on the academic village, which will feature a new classroom building, a new advising center, and a remodeled Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Learning Center. We also began renovating Eppley Auditorium.

But the next phase of transformation is about more than just physical improvements. Now we are asking how we can improve academic programs at the college. We largely have the right hardware in place, so we are able to turn our attention to the quality of the experience we offer our students – the software. It is exciting to now focus on developing the best programs.

For example, this fall we will begin offering a new major in applied agricultural and food studies. Located in one of the world’s most productive agriculture regions, Morningside is uniquely positioned to offer a major that prepares students for careers at a wide range of companies involved with food production in the United States and around the world. We developed this new major in consultation with companies such as Tyson Foods, Cargill, Beef Products Inc., Midwest Photo by Dan Brouillette Independent Soil Samplers LLC, Palmer Candy Company and Security National Bank. This program eventually will be housed in the new classroom building.

The college also plans to change its approach to advising when it opens the new academic advising center. Full-time advising experts will help students get started on the right track before they transfer to a faculty advisor. This is important because a great start at Morningside makes it more likely that students will complete a degree.

In the new classroom building, the education department plans to use technology to help students enhance their lessons and to more fully engage them as they prepare to become teachers. Likewise, the nursing department will use state-of-the-art technology and facilities in the new classroom building to greatly enhance the BSN program. And down the road, the department is looking at offering a graduate program in nursing.

These are just a few examples of how faculty and staff are focused on developing the very best programs for our students. In fact, a group of faculty members is continuing to meet this summer to work on a new, distinctive curriculum that will improve the Morningside experience.

In October, we launched the public phase of the Vision 2020: Transformation II campaign for facilities improvements, the endowment and the annual scholarship fund. The college has already raised more than $37 million of its $50 million goal.

While it is fun to see the cranes on campus continuing the physical transformation of the college, I am even more excited by the transformation of the student experience. But we need both the hardware and the software working together to make Morningside College an even better place. We have terrific students, and they deserve our best efforts.

Kiosk publishes 75th anniversary retrospective Disney’s “Snow White” made her debut on the big screen, Wrong Way Corrigan took off from New York for California and ended up in Ireland, Orson Welles’ broadcast of “War of the Worlds” caused a panic on the East Coast, Neville Chamberlain proclaimed “peace for our time,” and Time magazine declared Hitler as “Man of the Year.” The year was 1938. Amid all this, students in the Manuscript Club published and distributed the first issue of Morningside’s literary and art magazine. As the foreword to the first issue noted, “subject to editorial fallibility, the best will be printed.” Now, in 2013, it’s time to celebrate just some of the best poetry, fiction and non-fiction the Morningside community has offered over the past 75 years.

All-Sports Trophy stays at Morningside

This year Morningside won the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) All-Sports Trophy for the second year in a row and the fourth time in the last seven years. The Mustangs scored 166 points to claim the all-sports trophy by an impressive 18-point margin over runner-up Doane College. In fact, it was the most lopsided all-sports trophy race since 2003-2004.

The Mustangs were the class of the GPAC across the board as they topped the all-sports trophy scoring in both genders with 91 points in men’s sports and 75 points in women’s sports.

Morningside won regular season GPAC championships this year in football, women’s basketball and wrestling. It was the league runnerup in men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s indoor track & field, softball and women’s tennis.

On a national level, Morningside qualified as a team for National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship post-season competition in football, volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s basketball and softball. It sent individual athletes to compete at the NAIA indoor and outdoor track and field, swimming and diving, and wrestling national championships.

The Mustang women’s basketball team was in the national tournament for the 11th year in a row, the football team made its ninth consecutive post-season playoff appearance, the softball team qualified for the national tournament for the fifth year in a row, and the volleyball team returned to the national tournament for the fourth time in the last five years.

Wrestler John Sievert reigns at 197 pounds

John Sievert became the second wrestler in Morningside history to win an NAIA National Championship when he defeated Missouri Baptist’s Carl Lawrence 3-1 in the 197-pound title bout at the 2013 NAIA Wrestling National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

NAIA 184-pound National Championship in 2007, as Morningside’s only wrestling national champions. Stevenson, who just completed his first year as the Mustangs’ head coach, was named the 2013 Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Wrestling Coach of the Year after he guided the Mustangs to a perfect 6-0 record in league duals to win a second consecutive GPAC title.

Sievert, who joined the Mustangs at this year’s semester break in order to use his final semester of eligibility, went out in style by closing out his career with a 19-match winning streak to finish the season with a 21-2 record. Sievert graduated with a school-record 44 falls, the last of which came in 13 seconds against Eric Johnson of Calumet College at the NAIA National Championships, for the fastest pin in Morningside history.

Mustangs make their mark in track and field

This year Morningside won national titles in both the men’s and women’s 3200-meter relays at the NAIA Indoor National Championships and added another men’s 3200-meter relay crown at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships.

Taylor Chapman, Jay Welp, John Harris and Monte Larsen 2012 combined to win both the indoor and outdoor national championships in the men’s 3200-meter relay. They blazed to a time of 7 minutes, 26.33 seconds to win the outdoor title, which was the second fastest time in NAIA history and shattered the Mustangs’ previous school record by more than 12 seconds.

Larsen also became an NAIA individual national champion for the first time in his career when he reigned in the 800-meters at this year’s NAIA Indoor National Championships. He finished his career as a 12-time NAIA All-American in individual and relay events.

Morningside’s McKenzie Reece, Jennifer Petsche, Hailee Heitkamp and Breanna Mathes combined to win the NAIA Indoor 3200-Meter Relay National Championship, and the same four runners added a third-place finish in the 3200-meter relay at this year’s NAIA Outdoor National Championships.

Morningside athletes earned NAIA All-America honors in 17 events during the 2013 indoor and outdoor seasons. Aside from their three national championship efforts, the Mustangs also had a runner-up performance by Garret Ehlers in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase.

Football, women’s basketball teams go far

Morningside’s football team just missed putting an NAIA National Championship in its trophy case after the Mustangs lost 30-27 in overtime against Marian University in the 2012 Russell Athletic-NAIA Football National Championship Game on Dec. 13 in Rome, Ga. The overtime loss was the only blemish in a season where the Mustangs posted a 13-1 record, won a second consecutive GPAC championship, and appeared in their first-ever national championship football game. Mustang head coach Steve Ryan was named the 2012 NAIA National Coach of the Year by both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and American Football Monthly, while defensive back Jared Goforth was named a first-team All-American by both the AFCA and Beyond Sports Network.

The Mustang women’s basketball team also came close in their quest for an NAIA Division II National Championship. Morningside charged into the national tournament with the GPAC’s regular season and post-season tournament championships and a No. 1 NAIA national ranking on its resume. An Unusual Season

M-Club Messenger Team loses every game, but keeps its sense of humor

I wanted to share a story as reported in the 1911 Morningside College yearbook. Basketball started slowly at Morningside back in the early 1900s. In 1910, the team went on trains for an eight-game road trip, apparently during the break between semesters, and lost every single game. There were a few autos back then, but they were mostly owned by well-to-do folks, and the trains at the time were numerous, on time and affordable. Different accounts in the Collegian Reporter told of only five or six players – Capt. HI West 1911, GT Pendell 1910, Guy Stiles 1910, Robert Smylie 1912, Howard Berkstresser 1911 and maybe Allen Berkstresser 1910, plus Coach John Hollister. They

played a game at the University of South Dakota later, and lost that one, too, to finish at 0-9. Where did they practice? It was probably in the basement of Lewis Hall – 32 feet by 43 feet by 15 feet with several pillars, which served as a screen now and then. Ah, the "good old days." If you want to learn more, I have written a book about 100 years of Morningside basketball that has lots of pictures, records and stories based on 40-some interviews with players, coaches, referees and fans. It is called “A Century of Hoops,” and it is available in the college bookstore.

Morningside breaks ground on academic village, starts renovations to Eppley Auditorium

The Vision 2020: Transformation II campaign has been so successful that Morningside College was able to break ground this spring on the academic village that will feature a new classroom building, a new advising center and a remodeled Hickman-Johnson-Furrow Learning Center. It also began renovations to Eppley Auditorium.

This was possible because the college has already raised more than $37 million of its $50 million goal.

President John Reynders announced that W.A. Klinger of Sioux City is the general contractor for the academic village. Cannon Moss Brygger Architects of Sioux City is the lead architect, and HGA of Minneapolis, Minn., is serving as the design architect.

“I’m grateful to the generous donors who made it possible for us to reach 74 percent of our campaign goal after only 18 months of active fundraising,” Reynders said. “Our students, faculty and staff are looking forward to the completion of the new and remodeled facilities.”

The new classroom building will be located south of the learning center and west of the Walker Science Center. It will house Morningside’s education and nursing departments and a new applied agricultural and food studies program.

The advising center will be built next to the academic building and will connect to it with a second-floor walkway.

An outdoor plaza will visually link the new buildings with the existing learning center and science center. The learning center will be remodeled to create a new main entrance from the Hilker Campus Mall, and to convert the second floor into a study lounge.

The academic village is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2014.

Renovations to Eppley Auditorium will include new seats, carpet and wall coverings and new exterior landscaping. These will be the first updates to Eppley Auditorium since the facility

opened in 1966. The project will be completed by September.

Vision 2020 is a multiyear initiative to raise $50 million for facilities improvements, the endowment and the annual scholarship fund. The fundraising effort is scheduled to end in 2019 to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the college’s founding.

College adds applied agricultural and food studies major, new online option for RN-to-BSN program This fall the college will begin offering a new major in applied agricultural and food studies and a new online option for the RN-to-BSN program in nursing.

These programs eventually will be housed in the new classroom building that is part of the college’s $50-million fundraising campaign.

The applied agricultural and food studies

major is a liberal arts program that will prepare students for work in a variety of fields, from an executive at Tyson Foods to an editor at Successful Farming magazine.

Industry leaders have said there is a need for employees with a strong background in the liberal arts.

“What we have heard loud and clear is they want graduates who are able to think critically, communicate effectively and analyze quantitatively,” said Dr. Susan Burns, associate dean for academic affairs. “We have the ability to create a program that builds those kinds of skills.”

Burns said the curriculum combines a broad liberal arts background with direct, hands-on training in a specific field. Minors such as environmental policy and law, sustainable agriculture, and food safety will help students to specialize.

Students also will complete externships similar to the student teaching experience for education

majors. For example, a student minoring in business might do an externship at a bank and learn to do ag lending.

And while the college has had an RN-to-BSN program for many years, this fall the college will begin offering a new online option to help registered nurses complete a bachelor’s degree.

“We are making it more convenient for registered nurses to complete a BSN degree through a combination of interactive online courses and some face-to-face contact with instructors,” said Dr. Mary Kovarna, professor and chair of nursing at Morningside.

Kovarna said earning a BSN not only promotes advancement in nurses’ careers; research has shown it also helps improve patient outcomes.

“The trend nationwide is that employers are asking nurses to advance their education to at least the BSN,” she said.

“It’s a nationwide push backed by strong research that we need to have highly educated nurses at the bedside and in the workforce.”

To explain what makes Taylor Chapman uncommon as a runner, Dave Nash 1990 rewinds moment after moment when the Morningside College senior’s legs sat idle – rather than pounding in machine-like rhythm, gobbling up fat chunks of track.

The images swirl and linger in the head of Nash, the Mustangs’ track and cross-country coach, almost too many to sort.

Without warning or prodding, Nash suddenly and urgently slides forward in the chair of his office on the 68-acre campus tucked into the far northwest corner of Iowa. His eyes light up, and a finger rises in a way that signals that just the right example has arrived.

Lives cross once – and again As he scooped up the ball on a steal and glided toward the basket for a layup in Spencer’s first-round district game against Algona, Chapman felt confident and in control. At 6-foot-5 and a generous 160 pounds, he owned a mix of size and mobility that seemed a perfect fit to gallop up and down a basketball court.

As the ball funneled through the net on Feb. 23, 2009, it pushed his career high to 21 points and showed the talent that had caught the eyes of coaches at Buena Vista and Morningside. All that promise and potential hung in the air as he spun, pivoted and lowered his shoulder to race back down the court.

When Chapman turned, so did his life.

From the opposite direction, Rutledge sprinted toward the baseline to hustle the ball back into play and catch an unprepared defense. The collision jarred Chapman, who crumpled to the gym floor, motionless.

“I was there probably a second after it happened,” said Kevin Carlson, Spencer’s certified trainer. “He wasn’t responsive.”

In the stands, Spencer paramedic Don Pfaffenbach and his wife were watching the game: “We made what we call a trauma code or trauma alert. I advised them that they probably should get a helicopter in the air.”

The lives of Chapman and Rutledge had crossed before the day when the chopper blades thumped into action.

Rutledge was a sophomore in the fall of 2007 when coaches rushed him into a cross-country meet for the first time at Estherville.

Though he finished second, Rutledge had misjudged the pace and energy required because of his inexperience – crashing to the ground at the finish line.

A spot or two behind arrived the more veteran Chapman, who leaned over to help the stranger who had just beaten him. Chapman wanted to keep him from cramping and steer Rutledge out of harm’s way as others sprinted toward the line.

Rutledge’s mother, Jodi, watched the scene unfold.

“I didn’t know Taylor, but I saw he was concerned about lifting up the competition that had just beat him and make sure Chad was OK,” Jodi Rutledge said. “We had never met Taylor before, and there he was taking care of my son. It made me tear up – it was so beautiful.”

Two years later, the two reunited – in ways no one could have predicted or wanted. Rutledge sat on the bench, stared at the gym floor and hoped that Chapman would get up.

Peggy Bates, Chapman’s mother, sat nearby, frozen in fear.

“It was just a complete nightmare. I was just scared to death,” she said. “I instantly started praying. He’s down there – not moving, not moving, not moving. I was sick to my stomach.”

The helicopter shuttled Chapman to Sioux Falls, where he spent 15 days – the first four in the sweat-caked jersey he wore in the game.

Hospital staff wanted to be careful about jostling Chapman.

“I had to suffer through a stinky jersey for four days,” Chapman joked. “I could tell I was starting to smell pretty bad.”

A neurologist told Chapman his sports days were over, Bates said, explaining that MRIs were consistent with those of a quadriplegic.

Taylor would be lucky to walk again, let alone run or play basketball.

A massive dose of steroids helped reduce swelling around Chapman’s spinal cord. Near the end of his stay, after he’d started walking again, a nurse accompanied him to a mall for an assignment.

“The nurse, my mom and I went to Scheels and I had to try and walk the stairs,” he said. “We spent about 45 minutes in there. It sounds weird, but I went straight for the basketball stuff.”

Each success, though, partnered with moments of mettle-testing failure.

“In the car on the way back, everything got dark. Everything was blurry,” he said. “I don’t remember going in wheelchair from the entrance of my hospital. I started ripping my IVs out and tried to leave.

“I started to realize how much it affected me psychologically.”

On July 7, 2011, Heller built a new hip for Chapman – at an age 4.5 decades younger than typical patients. That October, Chapman ran again, at a cross-country meet in McCook Lake, S.D. “He was done as a runner and everyone was resigned to the fact that he was done as a runner,” Nash said. “Apparently, though, he didn’t get the memo.”

Success that day was measured by strength, not a stopwatch.

“It was the first time since the replacement surgery, and he’s one of the last runners out there,” Nash said. “He ran 30-something minutes in an 8K. He’s in the 24s now. The whole team was jumping up and down as he comes in.

“I’m not a big hugger. I can go years without hugging. I hugged him that day, though.”

The six-month grind of therapy produced a full recovery, and spurred Nash to wonder if sports still could play a role in Chapman’s life. Nash, a Des Moines Hoover graduate who ran at Morningside, first noticed Chapman when he was at a meet to recruit another high school runner.

“He was a good cross-country runner, but not the very best or anything,” Nash said. “And his love was basketball, and soccer. So running (cross-country) was probably No. 3 and track was maybe No. 4.”

Two times, Chapman was named the program’s “Comeback Runner of the Year.” At the team banquet a few months ago, Nash paused as he glanced at the runner who has left far more than an athletic mark on Morningside’s campus.

Nash had an announcement to make.

From now on, anyone who overcomes the odds and gives more rather than giving in, will be named “The Taylor Chapman Comeback Runner of the Year.”

“Everyone thought it was all over for him as an athlete,” Nash said. “We were wrong – twice.”

Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Awards Meet the 2012 recipients Dr. Jessica Tinklenberg deVega

is an assistant professor of religious studies who has been on the faculty since 2007. Award evaluators noted that her students and colleagues consistently praise her as a passionate, innovative and excellent teacher. Her courses engage students in deep exploration of the subject matter, combining primary texts with cutting-edge technology, pop culture references and countless other materials that facilitate learning. Her scholarly activities for the year included publication of two books on religion for general audiences. This is her second Walker Faculty Excellence Award. She received her first award in 2009.

Dr. David Elder joined the faculty in 2010 as an

assistant professor of writing and rhetoric. Award evaluators said his energetic and engaging teaching style captures the attention of students and actively involves them in class. Though most of his teaching load consists of required courses, his teaching consistently wins high ratings from students. Outside of class, he mentored Passport and honors students, completed the writing stage of a dissertation and collaborated with colleagues on research. He also was sub-editor for a national journal of student writing, and he worked with teachers and students in the Sioux City Community School District.

Dr. Jackie (Brummond) Barber 1995

is a professor of nursing education who has been on the faculty since 1997. Award evaluators praised her for her holistic approach to life and work. Both in and out of the classroom, she recognizes and appreciates all aspects of the human condition. Students recognize her as an excellent role model through her work with students, family, Morningside and the community, and her passion for teaching manifests itself through effective and innovative classroom work. This is the second time she has received a Walker Faculty Excellence Award. She received her first award in 2006.

Thanks for the memories This year seven members of the Morningside College community are retiring. Each one of them has served the college for decades.

We thank them for all they have done. Their

impact on the college will be felt for many years to come.

John Bowitz,

professor of art, has taught at Morningside College for 36 years, and he has served as chair of the art department for about 20 years. He is most proud of the artists that have come out of the program. One thing he will really miss about Morningside College is eating lunch in the cafeteria and having a super-size glass of ice-cold skim milk halfway through the day. In retirement, he will continue making art, and he will be out in nature. He will not be far from campus, as he lives a mile and a half away, and he is open to teaching a course at Morningside every once in a while.

Dr. Tom Gilbert 1962, Dr. Larry Martin, professor of philosophy, has taught at Morningside for 41 years, and has served as chair of the philosophy department for much of that time. He is known for his challenging, rigorous classes, and will remember most the good students he has had over the years. In retirement, he plans to engage in some “practical philosophy” by doing volunteer work for animal welfare organizations like PETA, and hopes to volunteer for Sea Shepherd, an organization which actively opposes the whaling industry.

He is most proud of the accomplishments of his students. They are also what he will remember most fondly about his time here. In retirement, he plans to do some work around his church, and some traveling. He will continue to live in Sioux City and plans to keep in touch with Morningside College by attending sporting events – especially basketball games.

Morningside bids farewell to longtime faculty and staff members Tom Rice,

vice president for institutional advancement, has worked at Morningside for 28 years, and he has been a member of the senior staff since 1993. During his time here, the college has raised $150 million, and the annual scholarship fund has grown from $400,000 to more than $1.6 million. Rice said he is most proud of building the relationships with the alumni and friends that caused that to happen. In retirement, Rice plans to continue on a part-time basis, and plans to do more golfing.

Most importantly, he plans to spend a lot of time with his family.

Dr. Larry Sensenig,

professor and holder of the Daniel and Amy Starch Endowed Chair in Psychology, has taught at Morningside for 39 years. He has served as chair of the psychology department since 1990. During his time as chair, the number of psychology majors on campus has grown, the college has created developmental psychology and industrial psychology programs, and the psychology department designed its facilities in the Walker Science Center. “It’s been a wonderful career,” Sensenig said. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I just love to go to work and do what I do.” Sensenig will miss students and colleagues. In retirement, he plans to do a lot of traveling.

Joseph Shufro,

associate professor of music, has been on the faculty for 36 years. He chaired the music department for a short period during that time. Looking back on his career, he is most proud of the accomplishments of the orchestra, the faculty trio, and touring England and Ireland with the Euclid Quartet and Morningside string students, as well as numerous classroom courses. His students and colleagues are what he will remember most fondly. Shufro does not think of himself as retiring. He is just calling this a “new phase” and is thinking about moving to California. He plans to keep in touch with Morningside College through the website, email and Facebook.

Dr. Glenna Tevis 1970,

director of graduate studies, has worked at Morningside for 29 years.

Originally, she was the early childhood specialist on the education faculty and director of the campus child care center. She became director of graduate studies in January 1990, and that became a full-time administrative, non-teaching position in January 2007. Tevis is proud that the college developed a master’s degree program that is flexible but also challenging. The professional seminar that students take as a capstone course is one of her favorite things about the program. She will miss the people at Morningside the most. In retirement, she and her husband plan to move to his ancestral home south of Sioux City near Holly Springs.

Morningside College presented the 2012 Thomas S. Thompson Staff Excellence Awards to Sheri Hineman, assistant director of student life; Mike Husmann 2003, senior systems administrator; Colleen Knapp, admissions database assistant; Brett Lyon 2004, assistant security director; David Nash 1990, head track and cross country coach; and Paul Treft 1984, associate vice president for business/ controller. Nash also was named staff employee of the year.

Recipients were selected based upon their demonstration of outstanding dedication, service and commitment to Morningside and its students during the 2011-2012 academic year. Each recipient received a cash bonus. Funding for the annual awards comes from an endowment established by Margaret Thompson, wife of the late Thomas S. Thompson, who served as president of Morningside from 1969 to 1978.

Husmann went to work for Morningside in 2003 as network system manager. He was honored for helping to make certain that almost every Morningside department, student, staff and faculty member can perform a variety of tasks efficiently and seamlessly.

Hineman joined the college in 2004 as area coordinator and student activities coordinator. She was recognized as a true advocate for students who has a key role in providing living and learning environments that are safe, comfortable and healthy.

Lyon started working for Morningside in 2007. He was honored for always being prepared to deal with the unexpected and the unplanned. He also sits on many community professional organizations and committees that help enhance his job

Gail Ament, Ph.D., professor of Spanish and chair of modern languages, gave a presentation on “Maya Prophesies of 2012” at the Betty Strong Encounter Center.

The program explored popular culture predictions, including the end of the world, based on a system of calendars developed by the Maya more than 2,300 years ago.

Walter W. Benjamin, Ph.D., head of the religion department from 1957 to 1966, has written his third book, “A Long Dark Night.”

In his book, Benjamin provides insight into his fight against cancer and what has given his life meaning, making the battle worth fighting. Benjamin also shares his thoughts on health care, education, religion, politics and the importance of family and friends. At one year cancer free, Benjamin celebrated by going skydiving in Baldwin, Wis. He also survived the "Arctic Plunge" a couple of years ago, as well as a trip to India where the temperature hit 117 degrees. Benjamin lives in Eden Prairie, Minn., and Hot Springs Village, Ark. Patrick Blaine, Ph.D., assistant professor of

Knapp has worked for Morningside since 2005. She was recognized for being a quick learner, a hard worker and a person who has the best attitude. She recently took on added responsibilities with a smile on her face and never a complaint.

Blaine’s article in Latin American Perspectives was "Representing Absences in the Postdictatorial Documentary Cinema of Patricio Guzmán."

His paper presentation was about film adaptations of Chilean author Antonio Skármeta’s novels.

David Elder, Ph.D., assistant professor of writing and rhetoric, gave a poster presentation at the biennial International Writing Centers Association Conference in San Diego, Calif., with students Demi Dunn, Samantha Hansen and Cameron Oakley.

Treft joined the college’s business office in 2000. He was honored for providing the kind of leadership and guidance that enables everyone in his department to succeed. Because his door is always open, his employees are able to provide excellent customer service to students and their families.

Dakota Philosophy Conference in Sioux Falls. Gilbert’s presentation was “The Formal Nature of Some Informal Fallacies.” Reid’s presentation was “Olympism: The Challenge of a Universal Philosophy.” Stout’s presentation was “Terrorism, Modern Warfare and the Permissibility of National Self-Defense.”

Marty (Steele) Knepper 1972, Ph.D., professor and chair of English and chapter advisor for the Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) freshman honor society, was a presenter at ALD’s national leadership workshop in San Antonio, Texas. She presented “Officers and Advisors: BFFs” with student Kelci Teut.

Doug Livermore , Ed.D., earned the rank of emeritus professor. Livermore retired from his position as professor of business administration and economics at the end of the 2011-2012 school year. He taught at Morningside for 32 years, serving as chair of the department of business administration and economics from 1984 to 2005.

Joan Nielsen, Ed. Spec., associate professor of education and project manager of Project

Unlimited Proficiency (PUP), was a presenter at the Iowa Culture and Language Conference in Coralville, Iowa. Nielsen gave the presentation “Teacher Evaluation: Does Teacher Evaluation Impact Student Learning?” that examined traits of effective educators and methods used to evaluate classroom instruction. She also gave a presentation with Socorro Herrera, a Kansas State University professor of education, titled “Research: Your Role.” PUP is a federally funded program at Morningside College where area teachers receive scholarships for courses to become certified to work with English Language Learners.

Dick Owens, Ed.D., earned the rank of emeritus professor. Owens started the special education program at Morningside and served as director of special education for 20 years. He worked full time at Morningside for almost 30 years, and then continued to work part time for another 14 years. He continues to supervise internships at the graduate level.

Heather Reid, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, recently had a book published.

She also gave an invited lecture in Ontario, Canada; presented a paper in New York; and was named to the editorial board for an international philosophy journal. The book, “Introduction to the Philosophy of Sport,” examines the history, significance, and philosophical dimensions of sport, and it incorporates specific concerns of today’s athletic world with a variety of philosophical issues. It was published by Rowman and Littlefield. In Ontario, Reid gave a lecture at Trent University in Peterborough called “Athletics and Philosophy in Ancient Greece: Olympics, Ethics, Education and Politics.”

In New York, Reid presented her paper “Beautiful Virtue: Aristotle on Kalokagathia” at the annual meeting for the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy at Fordham University Lincoln Center. Reid also was named to the editorial board of the International Journal of Applied Philosophy, which publishes philosophical articles dealing with practical issues in business, education, the environment, government, health care, law, psychology and science.

Jessica Tinklenberg deVega, Ph.D., assistant professor of religious studies, authored the book “Guesses, Goofs & Prophetic Failures” that was recently published by Thomas Nelson Inc. The book examines what the Bible says about prophecy, and people predicting an end of the world that didn’t come to pass. It aims to help readers better understand where the idea of "the end of the world" comes from in Jewish and Christian traditions. The book may be purchased

online through Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Cathy Wilt 1998, M.A.T., assistant professor of education, participated in a multistate study to determine recommendations regarding what should be a passing score for the Praxis Academic Skills for Educators test. The study took place in Princeton, N.J., and was conducted by the Educational Testing Service, which writes and administers the teacher certification exam. Wilt was nominated to participate in the study by Iowa’s educator licensing agency.

Mary Zink, M.B.A., visiting instructor of business, offered a workshop at Morningside College on “How to Hire the Best Person Every Time.” The workshop taught how to identify skills needed for a job and how to formulate behaviorally-based interview questions based on that information. It provided tips on what interview questions to avoid, why to always use a job application and how to call references.

New Staff

Amy Baer, administrative assistant in the Walker Science Center, assists the chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, math and computer science departments.

She graduated from Morningside College this spring with a double major in math and chemistry.

Stephen Gonshorowski, head men’s and women’s bowling coach, will help the Mustangs start their varsity program during the 2013-2014 school year.

A longtime teacher and coach in South Sioux City, Neb., he helped start South Sioux City’s club bowling program in 2012. He has bowled three sanctioned 800 series and nine sanctioned 300 games. He has a bachelor’s degree from Mankato State University in Minnesota.

Bobbi ( Eberly) Meister 1999, personal counselor, serves as a short-term personal counselor to all full-time students and provides mental health education to the campus community. She previously was a mental health therapist at Siouxland

Kevin Pottebaum 2010, digital communications manager, develops and executes online, social media and mobile strategies to support the college’s communications and admissions initiatives.

He manages, plans and contributes to the college’s website and social media channels, and he creates digital media such as emails and videos. Pottebaum previously was a sports writer for The Daily Republic in Mitchell, S.D. He has a bachelor’s degree from Morningside College.

Laura (Lindgren) Staber 1984, coordinator of central scheduling and administrative assistant, schedules, coordinates and supervises on- and off-campus events, and she assists the vice president for communications and marketing with general office management.

She previously was a sales representative for Executive Technologies in Sioux City. She has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Michelle Thornton, housekeeper, is responsible for the cleanliness of assigned areas and performance of duties established by the director of physical plant and the custodial manager. She worked most recently for Thornton Welding in Arizona as co-owner, receptionist and bookkeeper.

Clarence “Buddy” Mounts was inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame.

Arnie and Carolyn (Ebel) Schanke celebrated their 55th anniversary on Dec. 21, 2012.

They live in Tulsa, Okla. Arnie worked for F.W. Woolworth in New York City until retiring, at which time he became vice president and director of operation at Oral Roberts University. Arnie then retired again and became president of Media Unlimited until deciding to retire for good. Carolyn has been a column writer for several newspapers and a realtor for over 25 years.

Former Iowa Sen. Dr. Dave Mulder, R-Sioux Center, had his second book, “An Education in Politics: Four Years in the Iowa State Senate 2004-2008,” published in October 2012.

Mulder wrote the book with former Sen. Frank B. Wood Jr., D-Eldridge. Mulder’s first work was a yearly devotional titled “Devotions from the Heartland,” and was published in 2010. A second edition will be published in 2013.

1964

Dr. Bonnie (Nagel) Messer works in private practice as a licensed psychologist in Colorado. She recently published a book titled “Sixty-Five Lively Ideas for Successful Aging” with co-author Marjorie Bayes. Bonnie and her husband, Donald, also have established a nonprofit organization called the Center for the Church and Global AIDS, which seeks to support and advocate for persons infected and affected by HIV and AIDS in the world through programs of education, prevention, care and treatment. Barbara (Malmanger) Bielenberg, of Sloan, Iowa, recently completed four years on the national Policies Commission for Business and Economic Education and served as chair and past chair. Bielenberg also just completed a three-year term on the International Society for Business Education board, as well as a three-year term on the North Central Business Education Association Board.

Bielenberg continues service on the Iowa Business Education Association Board.

Tom and Jan (Hughes) McIntosh 1969 have retired from the Green River, Wyo., school district and moved to Loveland, Colo. Tom received Distinguished Citizen recognition from the Green River Chamber of Commerce in 2012 for his years of volunteer work developing the Green River Bike Park and Wilkins Peak Mountain Bike Trail System.

Rosemary (Buckingham) Tweet retired from Tucson Unified School District in Arizona after 18 years. During this time, she served as an elementary classroom teacher, a Title I resource teacher, a curriculum specialist at a technology focus school, and for the past six years, she served as a district language arts specialist.

Russel Clifford retired from Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City, where he was the minister of music. He was at Morningside Lutheran Church for 14 years after teaching at West High School and Bishop Heelan Catholic High School, both in Sioux City.

1973

Ken Spies was named to the Greater Sioux City Board of Realtors. Spies is a past president of the board and a broker associate with Century 21 ProLink in Sioux City.

Scott Ernst was named treasurer of the Downtown Sioux City Kiwanis Club for 2012-2013.

1977

Linda (Clausen) Erickson recently earned the Certified Hospice & Palliative Nurse designation. She is the education coordinator for Hospice of Siouxland.

Janet (Liibbe) Young was awarded the Warren E. Shull National High School Student Council Adviser of the Year Award in June of 2012. Young is a teacher at Sioux City West High School and has been student council adviser for 24 years.

Frank Heffner was recognized for 20 years of service at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City. Heffner is an instructor in the video game design program at the college.

Dr. Tim Orwig works for Northeastern University in Boston as a lecturer, teaching courses in design and architectural history.

Deb Angerman was recognized for 25 years of service at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City. Angerman is an accounting specialist at the college.

Scott Schreiner retired in March 2013. Most recently, Schreiner had worked in the Steele County Attorney’s Office in Owatonna, Minn., as the assistant county attorney, and prior to this, Schreiner served as a partner for 27 years in the law firm of Ruth, Schreiner, and Long.

Jim Diavastes received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Television Broadcasting and was also named Creative Director/Producer of the Year by Medaille College in Buffalo, N.Y. These awards recognize creativity, expertise and service to the Western New York and Medaille community. Diavastes is the Senior Creative Services producer/director for WIVB/WNLOTV in Buffalo. He began his career at KMSC radio station at Morningside and KTIV television station in Sioux City. Other recognition over the years includes ADDY Awards, New York State Broadcasters Association awards, public service awards, and Best Commercial produced by LIN TV Corporation, which he won in 2010.

Dr. bill russell directed “Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens” at the University of Kansas. “Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens” was developed in the late 1980s as a theatrical response to the AIDS crisis. This piece celebrates those whose lives were lost to the disease.

Catching Up with The Yates File Graduation Year: 1958 Major: Business Additional Degrees: Master’s in Guidance and Counseling, University of Colorado, and Doctorate in Counseling Psychology, Arizona State University Current Residence: Cleveland, Ohio Current Occupation: Retired Educator Much has changed since Dr. Richard Yates’ days at Morningside College. He reflected on his journey before, during and since his days on campus back in the 1950s.

Yates, an African-American originally from Sioux City, really did not have plans to attend college largely because of the expense and lack of encouragement to try. However, on the last day of his senior year in high school, the guidance counselor approached him about a special scholarship to be awarded to the African-American male with the highest grade point average.

“The scholarship enabled me to attend college, and I chose Morningside for its proximity to home, its good reputation as an educational institution, its range of academic choices of interest to me and its affordability with the funds from the scholarship,” Yates said. “In addition, many of my friends indicated that Morningside was a good academic environment and friendly campus.”

As Yates reflected on the education he received at Morningside, he said, “It helped me understand the meaning of striving to achieve educational goals combined with spiritual advancement. It also provided me the opportunity to participate in athletics and travel around the North Central Conference and make friends and associates.”

He said Morningside also prepared him well for his career.

“I was well trained,” he said. “I was able to teach in the Denver Public Schools and continue to

The group recently won the state auxiliary’s first-place award for the second consecutive year. It was awarded this honor for its contributions to the fire department and the community.

Rexann (Kaler) Smith was recognized for five years of service at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City. Smith is an instructor for the medical assistant program at the college.

1996

Michelle Holmes was elected treasurer of the board for the Siouxland affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Tony Onesto, art teacher at Aldo Leopold Middle School in Burlington, Iowa, was named the 2012 Outstanding Middle Level Art Educator. He received this recognition from Art Educators of Iowa in October during a joint Iowa/Nebraska conference in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This is not the first time that Onesto has received recognition for his teaching. He was a finalist for two national teaching awards, and he was awarded the League of United Latin American Citizens State Director Award for service above and beyond for children in 2004; Daily Democrat Teacher of the Year in 2008; and Southeastern Iowa/Southwestern Illinois Teacher of the Year place winner from the Burlington Hawk Eye newspaper in 2002, 2006 and 2012.

Dr. Patrick J. Murphy’s new book, “Mutiny and its Bounty: Leadership Lessons from the Age of Discovery,” authored with his colleague Ray Coye, was published in March by Yale University Press.

progress and earn higher academic degrees. It also laid the foundation for me to earn my master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Colorado and then to obtain my doctorate from Arizona State University.”

On overcoming obstacles, Yates shared the following: “I met my first wife at Morningside, and she was instrumental in supporting me to continue to pursue my dream to become a teacher. She taught me that sometimes you have to take a risk into the unknown to reap the benefits of achieving your goals and to believe that they can be reached.

“Strange as it seems, some people protected me from the consequences of racism by choosing not to include me on a series of basketball games played in the South. At the time it felt like discrimination, but upon reflection, it appears to have been a wise decision to spare me or the rest of the team the indignities of the Jim Crow segregation.”

Yates’ spiritual life also plays a large part of who he is, and that, he maintains, has allowed him to grow as a person. He is a member of the Baha’i Faith and has traveled to England, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Luxemburg, Italy, Greece, Ethiopia and India singing in Baha’i choirs.

Yates spent more than 40 years in the counseling field at three universities – Colorado State, University of Iowa and Cleveland State. He served as vice president of the International Association of Counseling Directors; taught psychology and related subjects at the collegiate level; consulted as an organizational development specialist in many different organizational settings; and worked with professional athletes through the NFL Rookie Enrichment Program.

So what advice does Yates have for Morningside College students?

“Take advantage of all the learning opportunities available to you,” he said. “Strive to become a servant leader and develop a sense of civic duty and commitment. Take advantage of the materials and guidance that will help you understand who you are, what your skills are, and who you will become.

Utilize all the services available to help you obtain a relevant position upon graduation. A small college provides the opportunity for more intimate, hands-on learning. Take advantage of that as well.”

Nancy Mounts, Sioux City, died April 28, 2013.

Mounts worked at Morningside College from 2001 to 2011. She was the director of the Regional Center for Teaching and Learning.

Col. Isabelle Swartz, Dupont, Wash., died Sept. 26, 2012. Swartz was the daughter of Isabelle (Walker) Swartz 1919 and a friend of the college.

Beautiful minds Students presented results from about 150 independent or classroom research projects this spring when Morningside College held its 10th annual Palmer Student Research Symposium.
