This fall we were so fortunate to have Stephen Carter on our campus to deliver the Waitt Lecture. His lecture and his book “Civility” reminded us that we must make the effort to truly listen to others, especially those with whom we disagree, if we want our democracy to be successful.

Many of us are frustrated by the increasing polarization of our country. Not only do we disagree on issues; now we even can follow media outlets tailored specifically to our own viewpoints. The problem with surrounding ourselves with people who agree with us, Carter says, is that we trick ourselves into thinking issues are simple, and that anyone who disagrees with us is either ignorant or immoral.

When we do interact with those having different viewpoints, often we do not truly listen to them.

Instead, we spend all of our time formulating a counterargument to whatever we heard them say in the first sentence or two. It is OK to have strong opinions. But for a democracy to work, Carter says, we have to view the ideas of others as just as important as our own. We have to enter discussions open to the idea that our minds might be changed. Otherwise, how can we expect others to do the same for us?

That is what is so great about a college like Morningside. We provide students with the opportunity to engage in this kind of provocative discourse that is so vital for progress in a democratic society.

These discussions happen in the classroom. They happen in the residence halls. They also happen when we engage in dialogue with the larger community. If we, as an institution, want to model for our students the importance of listening to other viewpoints, we need to bring visitors onto our campus who can challenge us.

We welcomed a number of remarkable speakers onto our campus this fall. Along with Carter, who is a Yale law professor and best-selling author, we heard from speakers such as David Kinnaman, whose research firm found that young Americans outside of Christianity have little trust in the Christian faith and low esteem for the lifestyle of Christians. We heard from renowned agronomist Dr. Gurdev Khush, who is a recipient of the World Food Prize, and we heard from Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Marsha Ternus, who is the first woman to serve as chief justice of Iowa’s highest court.

These were opportunities for our faculty, staff and students to hear some of our country’s leaders talk about important issues we are facing in the world President John Reynders has a conversation with Lindsey (Heiliger) Kraushaar 2004 today – issues that are complex and her husband, Joel Kraushaar 2005, during the 2010 Homecoming celebration. and do not come with easy answers. I hope that we all listened to the subtleties of each speaker’s arguments, weighed those arguments against our previous knowledge, and arrived at our own unique understanding of the issues.

The important thing is not that we agreed with each speaker’s ideas; the important thing is that we considered them.

There is real value in allowing ourselves to be challenged by others – allowing ourselves to carefully consider different sides of an issue and then to make up our own minds. I am convinced we cannot grow as a society or as individuals if we are not open to new ideas. That is why we instill in our students the value of an open mind. It is something critically important to the future of our democracy.

school there. Morningside received this letter from someone they met on their trip.

I am a State Department foreign service officer assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. As part of my preparatory training, I recently completed a Spanish language immersion in Antigua, Guatemala. It was in that capacity and location that I had the great pleasure of getting to know Professor Kitty Green and a good number of your students. Throughout the experience, I was specifically impressed with your students’ cultural and intellectual curiosity and the mature way in which they represented their country and their school. I am certain that May Term opportunities such as this one play an important role in opening the eyes of students – and often faculty – to the countless opportunities to give back to their respective communities, both locally and globally. I sincerely hope that my path will cross once more with such excellent students. I would be honored to work beside them in the future.

Remembering Dr. Elsie Muller Editor’s Note: Dr. Elsie Muller, professor emerita of mathematics at Morningside College, died July 8, 2010. The college received this letter in memory of her.

I attended Morningside in the mid-1960s. Dr. Muller was my calculus instructor. Dr. Muller had a system to make sure you could not complete her class without success. After a test, you would have your graded test returned to you the next class. She would go over every question with the correct answer and answer our questions. The next class you would come into the room and see your name on the blackboard with a problem like you missed on the test. You would be asked to go to the board and solve it in front of the class. In 1968 I went to combat on a U.S. Navy river patrol boat in Vietnam. Dr. Muller wrote a letter to me. It was a letter of encouragement. I was by no means one of her best students. But, she remembered me. It meant a lot to me. I have always remembered her kindness.

OnCampus Writing and rhetoric department up and running

A new department is up and running this fall. Morningside College has created a department of writing and rhetoric to head up the first-year writing program, to expand the Writing Across the Curriculum program and to enhance the tutoring services available in writing.

“It just shows that we have a dedication to writing excellence on campus, and that there is help along the way from the first-year writing program through every course where students have to write,” said Dr. Leslie Werden, assistant professor and chair of writing and rhetoric. “They get support along the way, and faculty members get support as well.”

All first-year students at Morningside take Passport in the fall and most of them take Composition & Communication (C&C) in the spring. Passport develops abilities in academic reading and writing, while C&C focuses on research, argument writing and public speaking.

In the past, faculty members from a variety of disciplines have taught these first-year writing courses.

Now the writing and rhetoric department is heading up this effort. Its faculty members are teaching about half of the sections of first-year writing, while the rest continue to be taught by various faculty members and selected staff.

“It’s not that the people teaching Passport and C&C couldn’t do it; with our growing student enrollment, we needed them to teach 100-level courses in their own disciplines,” Werden said. “We also wanted to improve the overall writing on campus, which is why we conducted a national search for new faculty with degrees in composition and rhetoric.”

While the writing and rhetoric department is teaching first-year writing courses, the rest of its work is more service oriented. For example, by expanding the Writing Across the Curriculum program, it is providing faculty members with additional support to teach writing within their content areas.

It also is enhancing tutoring services available in writing by hiring more student tutors, providing additional training for the tutors and creating an online scheduling program so students can sign up for a tutoring appointment from their dorm room, just to name a few examples.

The new department is located on the second floor of the Hickman Johnson Furrow Learning Center.

Werden came over from the English department, and the college hired David Elder and Dr. Jeremy Schnieder to serve as assistant professors of writing and rhetoric. Staff members from the Academic Support Center like Donna Galati and Jim Zuercher are working with the program as well.

NEW HOUSING OPTION AVAILABLE

Morningside College recently created yet another housing option for students when it remodeled two homes on Garretson Avenue, just up the hill and across the street from Eppley Auditorium.

The Garretson Houses give students an experience similar to living off campus, but they still can enjoy all of the perks of living on campus, such as the ideal location and the access to campus security, maintenance and residence life services, said Sheri Hineman, assistant director of residence life.

The homes were remodeled this spring to feature four furnished double-occupancy rooms; three full bathrooms; a living room; and a full kitchen with a stove, microwave and full refrigerator. They also have outdoor lounge space, basement storage, coinoperated laundry and a nearby parking lot. Both houses were remodeled to retain their wooden staircases.

Upperclass students moved into the homes at 3800 and 3804 Garretson Avenue this fall – men in one and women in the other. Hineman said the homes are the only living option on campus where students do not have to purchase a meal plan.

“Morningside College offers a variety of housing options including freshman housing, wellness housing, apartment housing, leadership housing and now the Garretson Houses,” she said. “We provide a large variety of options to meet all of our students’ diverse needs.”

highest in years Morningside College reported the largest number of new students in nearly 40 years this fall with 428 new full-time students enrolled, for a total of 1,208 full-time students for the fall of 2010. President John Reynders said, “We had more than 2,500 freshman enrollment applications for the fall semester, the largest number of applications Morningside has ever received. As a result, we have an outstanding freshman class. About 47 percent of this year’s freshmen graduated in the top 25 percent of their high school classes, the highest percentage we have seen at Morningside in more than a decade.”

Admissions event explodes

College named one of best

More than half of this fall’s incoming freshmen and more than a quarter of the incoming transfer students were referred by alumni through the Alumni Referral Grant program. Students referred by alumni and admitted to the college are eligible for a Morningside College Alumni Referral Grant, a four-year, renewable grant of $500. The deadline for referrals of prospective students for the fall of 2011 is Jan. 20, 2011. To recommend a prospective student, go online to www.morningside.edu/alumni/ and click on the “Alumni Referral Grant” link, or call the admissions office at 712-274-5111.

This summer there were 248 prospective students who visited Morningside during Iowa Private College Week, compared to 101 prospective students who visited campus last year during the event. Iowa Private College Week gives prospective students and their families a weeklong opportunity to make coordinated visits to Iowa’s private college campuses. Sue Pyburn, associate director of admissions at Morningside, served as chair of this year’s statewide event.

Mustang basketball games are being broadcast on Clear Channel Radio/KWSL 1470 AM during the 2010-2011 season. The Sioux City radio station is broadcasting 41 selected men’s and women’s basketball games. Fans outside the Sioux City listening area can hear the games streamed online at www.1470kwsl.com.

Morningside was designated one of the Midwest’s “Best Regional Colleges” in the 2011 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” released by U.S. News & World Report. Morningside was ranked 27 out of 95 regional colleges in the Midwest. This is the seventh consecutive year that U.S. News has designated Morningside a “Best College.” The Princeton Review also selected Morningside as one of 152 institutions it recommended in the "Best in the Midwest" section of its website feature “2011 Best Colleges: Region by Region.”

Actress portrays famous authors

Actress, storyteller and award-winning author Patricia Hruby Powell visited campus recently to offer a glimpse into the lives of three famous authors during “An Evening with Jane Austen, Emily Brontë and Emily Dickinson.” She was visiting Morningside College as part of the Dr. R. Franklin Terry Women’s Studies Lecture and Faculty Development Series.

Freshmen help starving children

Over 300 freshmen pulled together this fall for a Morningside service project to pack 29,500 bags of food to send to the children of Honduras.

They were packing nutritionally-complete meals made from dry ingredients that are easy to package, keep for long periods and require only boiling to prepare. They were working with Then Just Feed One, a nonprofit organization working to alleviate world hunger.

Morningside’s chief financial officer to serve in Iowa House

Ron Jorgensen 1979, vice president for business and finance at Morningside College, was elected Nov. 2 to a two-year term in the Iowa House of Representatives. He will represent the Morningside area in Sioux City and the city of Sergeant Bluff.

He was the Republican candidate, and he garnered 67 percent of the vote.

The legislative session runs from mid-January until the end of April.

Jorgensen said he will remain in his leadership role with Morningside College during that time.

“I will still be in the office on Fridays and Saturdays each week,” Jorgensen said. “I have a great staff in which I have total confidence, and with e-mail and access to my files from my computer, I will always be connected.”

Jorgensen has over 30 years of financial management experience.

He has served in his current role at Morningside College for the past 13 years. Prior to that, he served as chief financial officer for a local bank.

Jorgensen served on the Sioux City School Board for six years, two Ron Jorgensen 1979, vice president for business and finance at Morningside College, works of them as board president. “I’m not doing this because I need a job,” he said. “I already have a great job at Morningside College. I’m doing this because I deeply care about this state and area, and I know we can do much better. I want to make Iowa the best place to work, live, raise children and retire.”

Jorgensen is a life-long Sioux City resident. He has been married to Kathy (Ricke) Jorgensen for 29 years. They have two sons: Corey, 25, and Eric, 21.

“We are thrilled to have Ron represent us in the Iowa House,” said Morningside President John Reynders. “I am confident he will be a strong advocate for Iowa’s private colleges. I also am confident in Ron’s abilities to serve the college’s business office during the legislative session. His strong leadership has played an integral role in improving the financial position of the college, and I am sure that will continue.”

Morningside sports highlights

Football team among nation’s elite

Head coach Steve Ryan has built the Morningside football program to the point where the Mustangs rank among the nation’s elite on a yearly basis, and the 2010 season has proven to be no exception.

The Mustangs had a 7-1 record with two games left on their regular season slate, and they were on course for a seventh consecutive postseason appearance in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship Series.

Many of the Mustangs’ victories have been blowouts, including a 71-0 Homecoming shutout of Dordt, a 58-12 trouncing of city rival Briar Cliff, a 40-7 triumph against Doane in the season opener, and a convincing 36-7 romp against a Midland team that was nationally ranked going into the final weekend of October.

Cross country teams shine

It’s been a strong season for the Morningside cross country teams.

The Mustang women have been nationally ranked for most of the season, peaking at No. 13, while the Morningside men have received votes in the NAIA national coaches’ poll for the first time in history. The Morningside women were hoping for a return trip to the NAIA National Championships in Vancouver, Wash.

The season’s crowning moment for the Mustang women came on Sept. 18 when they finished a close second behind National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Iowa State University Kara Nelson at the Cyclones’ Iowa Intercollegiate meet in Ames.

Kara Nelson finished ahead of all of the Iowa State runners and was the individual champion at the meet, while teammate Jessica Hudelson finished sixth. Nelson was also the individual champion at the Briar Cliff Invitational on Oct. 9.

Hudelson has been one of the most improved runners in the Jessica Hudelson nation this season and was the individual champion at the Concordia Invitational in the first meet of the season. Hudelson, Nelson and Breanna Mathes have all earned GPAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week honors this year.

The Morningside men have been led by senior Brian Gesink, who has been a mainstay in their lineup over the past four years. The Mustangs’ second runner throughout the season has been Garret Ehlers, a freshman with a bright future who was Iowa’s 2009 Class 2A state champion as a senior at Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove High Joel Nixon provided one of the biggest plays of the season by returning a punt 50 yards for a School. touchdown to spark a come-from-behind win at Northwestern. Morningside’s closest escape was a 20-17 victory against a nationally ranked Northwestern team on Oct. 2 in Orange City, Iowa. Joel Nixon rescued the Mustangs when he returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown with 3:51 remaining to bring them back from a 17-12 deficit.

Defense has been the name of the game for the Mustangs, who limited their first eight opponents to averages of just 10.8 points and 207.1 yards total offense per game. Senior linebacker Marshall Tuttle has been the Mustangs’ leading tackler for the second year in a row, while Ben Haugen, John Kirwan and Marshall Barney have been the most frequent visitors into the opponents’ backfield. Jared Goforth leads the Mustangs in interceptions, and Ben Rickord leads the team in pass breakups for the second year in a row.

Mike McNulty rushed for 814 yards in the first eight games to put him on pace to become only the fifth 1,000-yard rusher in Morningside history, while Bradley Norwood led the Mustang receivers with 38 catches and six touchdowns.

The Mustangs’ biggest scoring weapon has been placekicker C.J. Gradoville, who has a school-record 15 field goals this season and became the top kick scorer in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) history with 362 career points.

Volleyball team hopes to extend streak

The Morningside volleyball team went into the home stretch of the schedule with hopes of extending a streak of eight consecutive winning seasons. The Mustangs had a 14-14 record with three regular season matches remaining.

The big hitters in the Mustangs’ attack have been Kaeli Austin, Liz Sutherland and Erin Downing.

Looking Ahead

The outlook is bright for another strong season for the Mustang women’s basketball team. The team hopes to extend a run of eight consecutive NAIA Division II National Tournament appearances.

The Mustangs return three starters from a team that finished 21-12 last winter, including second-team All-American Tanaeya Worden. They are ranked fifth in the nation in the NAIA II pre-season poll.

Students aid in earthquake relief This summer eight Morningside College football players and one basketball player took nine days out of their vacation to assist with relief efforts in Haiti following the major earthquake that occurred there in January. During their visit the students assisted locals with the building of an orphanage.

Sophomore Jacob Hamburger recalled his reasons for going: “I wanted to make a difference in someone’s life who truly needed it, and after going to Haiti and experiencing what I did, the people truly did need it.”

The students’ typical day building the orphanage started at around 8 a.m. and went until 3 p.m. Their work included moving cement, building rebar towers, and performing other jobs associated with building construction. After work the students had time to interact with the local adults and children by playing card games, doing Bible studies, taking hikes, and playing soccer and football.

“The best part had to be meeting and building friendships with the children and people of Haiti,” Hamburger said. “These people live in one of the poorest countries in the world and yet they are probably among the happiest. This was amazing to see and made me realize the many things we have to be thankful for.”

Are you seeing double?

By Dr. Sharon Ocker You may recall the old jingle for Wrigley’s Doublemint gum that said, "Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun!" As far as can be determined, only three women ever achieved first-team all-conference recognition in two sports at Morningside. They were Connie Hauswirth 1976, who earned those honors in basketball and softball; Paula (Hunter) Olsen 1989, who was a two-time all-conference performer in both basketball and volleyball; and the subject of this article, Amy (Wilhelm) Lefler 1987, who was a three-time all-conference performer in basketball and a two-time allconference pick in volleyball. A number of women have played more than one sport, but only this trio made first-team all-conference in more than one.

Lefler was a whiz in basketball and set several records along the way, six of which still stand today. She is the leading scorer in Morningside history with 2,332 career points and holds Morningside records in scoring average for a season (24.2 in 1985-1986) and for a career (20.4). She is also the school record holder for

most field goals in a game with 18 against Westmar College in 1986; in a season with 314 in 1985-1986; and in a career with 988.

Although Lefler did shoot the long ball on occasion, she didn’t have the benefit of the 3point goal, or her final scoring output would have been even larger. Her style was to drive, often after a patented 180-degree spin move, which left opponents in her tracks. At the end of the move, she shot a nifty jump shot, usually inside the lane. She also scored a lot after stealing the ball or at the end of a fast break.

Quickness was her forte. She said stealing the ball is mostly anticipation, and she had a knack for determining where opponents’ passes would go. Although Lefler doesn’t hold any free throw records anymore, she did excel from the charity stripe, shooting 87.9 percent as a sophomore and 83.1 percent for her career. She made allleague in the Io-Kota Conference three times (1985, 1986 and 1987) and was named a Kodak All-American in the last two years as well.

Although she loved basketball, Lefler’s favorite was volleyball. She earned all-conference in the Io-Kota Conference in 1983 and 1986. In the net game, her favorite play was the spike.

coaches Chuck Mounts 1960, Gene Ulrich and Dan DeJong. Although he was not officially her coach, Steve Maguire gave her lots of tips after school. Her college coaches included Bud Brockman, who recruited her, and John Arnold, who was the skipper for her last three years. In volleyball, she gives a lot of credit to Linda Christensen, who was her high school coach. In college, it was Patti (Patton) Hesse 1978 and Sandy Winter 1981 who led the way.

Other sports? She played shortstop for North High and did very well. She learned to drag bunt and got lots of hits that way. Did she consider playing softball at Morningside? Yes, but two sports were about as much she could handle with her academic load.

Lefler relates some interesting stories. Her biggest rival in high school was Sioux City West’s Val Uken 1987. They battled for scoring honors as well as on the court. They were both recruited

by Brockman while they were in high school.

Lefler said she wouldn’t come to Morningside if Uken did. Lefler asked Brockman about Uken and he said she had “other options” as well.

They were shocked to see each other when they reported to their first volleyball practice as freshmen. They became great friends and loyal teammates, so it worked out well for both of them.

Amy (Wilhelm) Lefler 1987 was one of only three women in Morningside history to achieve first-team all-conference in two sports.

A major discovery

Morningside research could change hospital protocol

Three years ago a few sophomores in Dr. Rachel Robson’s microbiology class asked an important question. That question led to a research project that now has the potential to change a practice at hospitals across the United States.

It all started when the students decided to do research projects on Staphylococcus aureus, bacteria that often remains dormant but sometimes can cause serious diseases, especially when people are already having other health problems. The students needed to know how to test whether people were dormant carriers of the bacteria. So they did some research and discovered they should swab people’s noses, but they remained unsure of which nostril to swab.

“There were lots of students who had tested for Staphylococcus aureus carriage by doing nostril swabs,” said Robson, an assistant professor of biology. “But very few of them had any specifics about whether you swab the right or the left, and the ones that did have specifics clearly made the assumption that the nostrils were the same.

“There would be wording in the protocol like, ‘Swab the right because it’s representative of both nostrils,’ or ‘Swab both nostrils using the same swab,’ or ‘It doesn’t matter because both nostrils are the same.’ So there was this assumption, but what we couldn’t find in the literature was where anybody had actually shown that this assumption was true.”

So the students decided to focus their research on whether a person’s right and left nostrils carry the same bacteria. What they found is that they do not.

“The key conclusion of this is that the way that hospitals are testing for Staphylococcus aureus is wrong because hospitals think that both nostrils are the same,” Robson said.

Robson and a couple of students have been researching this issue ever since – even spending two months this summer doing high-tech research at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Soon they plan to submit their findings for publication in a peerreviewed journal.

The project Robson said about a third of the population carries some strain of Staphylococcus aureus in their nostrils, most with no apparent problems. She said hospitals sometimes test staff members and patients to see if they are carriers of the bacteria because some strains can cause serious disease, especially when a person’s health becomes compromised.

In response to the question whether people carry the same bacteria in both nostrils, the students were able to get preliminary results in their semesterlong microbiology course, but collecting enough data for a thorough research experiment would take much longer.

committee to stick stuff up people’s noses,” Robson said. “Then for every person who is sampled, we have a form that they have to sign. As it turns out, it is not especially easy convincing strangers to let you stick things up their noses, so a lot of people who you ask just say no.”

Then of the people who were tested, only about 35 percent of them tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus – some in the right nostril, some in the left nostril and some in both.

“We needed to collect enough samples so that we could establish that we had statistical significance,” Robson said. “It took a solid three years to do that because we ended up testing over 300 people.”

Once each sample was collected, the students had to prepare petri dishes so that any Staphylococcus aureus present would have the opportunity to grow. Whenever Staphylococcus aureus was found, they treated some of the sample with the antibiotic methicillin to see if it would kill the bacteria, or if it was methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Other tests were conducted as well.

“I’m grateful to those students who were like, ‘You know what? I would like to continue collecting results on this even though I’m not in class anymore,’” Robson said.

One of the students who has contributed the most to this project is Beau Kildow 2009, who is now a first-year medical student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He was part of that initial microbiology class project in the fall of 2007, and he has continued helping out pretty much ever since.

Even though he graduated last December, he still traveled to Sioux City from his home in Omaha about once a week last spring to continue doing research.

“Basically, I thought it was kind of like Dr. Robson’s and my project,” he said. “Just because I graduated, I would have hated to leave it open-ended and not have done what I could to finish everything up. I really wanted to get everything published because we put so much time and effort into it that I wanted to have something come out of it.”

Another student who has contributed a lot is J.P. Conradie, a senior biology major. Conradie was not involved with the initial class project – as he was only a freshman at the time – but he later got involved in the continued research taking place at Morningside.

As the project continued to progress, Robson learned about a summer program at the University of Iowa where small-college professors and students can conduct research using the university’s hightech equipment. This would allow them to collect genetic data needed to enhance their research findings. So she applied to the program and was accepted, and she invited Conradie to come help her with the research.

“It was a really phenomenal experience,” Conradie

said. “The equipment they use there is really intricate, and we had to go through some training things just to work with the stuff. And really, also, the techniques I learned here in class, I got to do them over there, and it really kind of solidified it more in my mind.”

Robson said they needed to do more testing of their samples at the University of Iowa because, although they had shown at Morningside that people were more likely to carry Staphylococcus aureus in one nostril than in both, people still might ask why that means hospitals should swab each nostril separately. As a result, they needed to learn more about the genetics of the bacteria.

The FUTURE in Biomedicine Program at the University of Iowa gave Robson and Conradie access to laboratories with equipment costing hundreds of thousands of dollars or more, which allowed them to do this additional testing, said Dr. Madeline Shea, professor of biochemistry at the University of Iowa and director of the program.

“Rachel had a great set of data that she had been collecting there at Morningside with the help of students, and she had students who were asking interesting questions and really thinking about how does one go about learning new knowledge,” Shea said. “But she didn’t have access to some of the tools that she needed to take a next step that would help her publish the research. For any scientist, it is great to know something new, but then it is really important and valuable to share it with the rest of the world.”

At the University of Iowa, Robson and Conradie discovered that 15 percent of the people carrying Staphylococcus aureus in both nostrils were carrying clearly genetically distinct bacteria in each nostril.

In addition, all of the people carrying MRSA were carrying the bacteria in just one nostril, even though more than half of them were carrying some other strand of Staphylococcus aureus in their other nostril.

“So if somebody uses the same swab for both nostrils, they could either transfer the MRSA from this nostril to this one – so now I’m colonized in both directly – or they could transfer genes from the MRSA in this nostril to these other unrelated bacteria over here, presenting the world with a brand new MRSA,” Robson said.

teaching microbiology. She said most microbiology courses at the undergraduate level just have students complete exercises in a lab workbook, where the students follow steps that lead to predetermined results.

“One of the implications of that way of teaching microbiology is that no matter how lucky or how gifted of a student you have, no student will ever have the chance to make a real discovery in class,” she said. “My incentive for them to take material seriously is not that it necessarily will happen, but that it could happen that you could discover something important.”

Kildow called the Staphylococcus aureus research project “the best thing I’ve ever done.” Conradie also spoke favorably of the experience.

“You have to think of a good question, you have to think of how you are going to find out the answer, and then you don’t really know if the answer was right at the end,” he said. “You just ask whether what I have here supports my hypothesis. You never really prove anything, whereas with the cookbook experiments, it seems like you either have a right or wrong answer. And that’s not really what science is about.”

Robson and the students are in the process of finishing up their research project. They hope to present their research at a national microbiology conference in May. Around that same time, they hope to submit their research to a clinical microbiology journal, where they will make the recommendation that people need to be swabbing nostrils with separate swabs.

“It was a good project,” said Dr. Alex Horswill, an associate professor of microbiology at the University of Iowa who assisted them in the labs this summer. “It is just a nice story that Dr. Robson and her students developed this hypothesis and are driving it toward getting a publication. Eventually this work may have some implications in terms of how hospitals test for Staphylococcus aureus.”

other Morningside faculty members, he has written a textbook that finally gears human relations toward the teaching field, and a major publisher is marketing that textbook nationwide.

The other authors of the textbook are Dr. Susan Burns, associate dean for academic affairs, and Susie Lubbers, assistant professor of education.

While human relations in general looks at how to establish and maintain productive relationships, this textbook, called “Human Relations for the Educator,” looks specifically at the many relationships that a teacher needs to develop in order to be successful – from students to parents to administrators to colleagues.

Though Arnett has been teaching Human Relations for Educators for about 13 years, it was not until about five or six years ago that he decided to try to write a textbook for the course. When he got the idea, he approached Burns, who was then a member of the psychology faculty at Morningside.

“I was teaching a lot of students who were becoming teachers because I was teaching Developmental Psychology and Child and Adolescent Psychology,” Burns said. “My background is in social psychology as well, so this was a natural fit for me. When Scott approached me, I had no hesitation.”

Burns and Arnett completed an early draft of the textbook. Then they asked Lubbers to get involved with the project. Lubbers joined the education faculty at Morningside in 2006. She previously taught language arts for about 15 years at Sioux City East High School.

“Scott and I had a conversation about how Susie could give us the realworld examples because she’s been in the classroom living it and not only having to relate with students but colleagues and administrators and parents,” Burns said. “And so she brought in very appreciated practical applications.”

Just within the last couple of years, Kendall Hunt Publishing Co. got involved with the project. Kendall Hunt is a major publisher of educational products based in Dubuque, Iowa.

“A large part of our higher education division is we go into a school, we find a professor who is interested in publishing a book that suits their course, and we create the book for their course, selling only to their course,” said Deb Howes, a senior marketing specialist with Kendall Hunt. “However, if we happen to find topics in certain disciplines that would definitely reach beyond just an individual school, then we develop them further – like this book – and then market them nationwide.”

Teaching and learning

Morningside student Emily Domayer said it’s a neat experience to be taking a class from one of the people who actually wrote the textbook. And she said she appreciates how the book is geared specifically toward the teaching profession.

“I really like it because we can take examples from the book and use them in everyday classroom settings,” she said.

Lubbers said one of a teacher’s most important jobs is to build community in the classroom.

“Students feel a part of the community because of how you can relate with them and how they can relate with others in the classroom; that is all part of how successful they’re going to be,” she said. “I could give you all kinds of anecdotal information about students who, once they felt that I cared about them as individuals and cared to know what they had to say, they sat up taller in class, they participated and they did the work. And that comes from creating

Though these faculty members wrote the textbook to improve the learning experience for students, they also ended up learning a few things themselves in the process.

“It makes me more appreciative of what’s in a textbook,” Burns said. “It’s in there for a reason. Clearly, somebody’s thought about it being there. That doesn’t mean I cover everything that’s in the textbooks that I use for my classes. But I’m perhaps more intentional about the information that’s covered and the referencing of the textbook for the students as well.”

After studying these issues with a focus on how they relate to teachers specifically, the textbook asks students to think about scenarios such as the following: • Two boys have a lunchroom disagreement. Before you can get to them, a group forms around them taunting them to hit each other, and one boy hits the other in the face. What should you do? What was the role of the group in this situation?

• During a conference, you start out by telling the parents how wonderful their daughter is to have in class, very kind and thoughtful.

Later you tell them their daughter is struggling with reading proficiency, and they become defensive. What should you do?

• A student is in line to come in from recess. He looks like he is ready to cry. You ask if he is OK, and he says he is fine.

Why would he tell you he is fine if he clearly isn’t? How should you address him, knowing he doesn’t want to talk about his problem?

• You are new to the school district. Other teachers are telling you that one of your students is going to be a troublemaker just like his older siblings. How should this affect your opinion of the student coming into your class?

• A student just failed his first American history exam. Though you are disappointed in his performance, you know he was really trying when he took the test. What should you say? Why is it important to have a conversation with the student?

• You know something is not right when your principal walks into the room. Her eyes are red and swollen, and she does not make eye contact before she starts speaking. How can interpreting nonverbal communication be both helpful and detrimental?

Bringing back an old tradition Steam whistle sounds when football team scores

That wasn’t a train you heard during the Homecoming football game. It was history coming to life when a steam whistle sounded every time Morningside scored.

The whistle used to be in the old maintenance building behind the library.

The story, passed down from employee to employee, is that maintenance employees would fire up the boilers for home football games on Bass Field.

That way they would be ready to blow the whistle when the home team scored.

“They would come in on Saturday morning and get the boilers up to pressure,” said Kirk Johnson, director of physical plant. “It takes a long time to do it. They would get the boilers up to pressure for game time at 1 o’clock.

It was pretty hot work, and then Morningside never scored a touchdown.

That’s kind of the story that I got.”

Then after Morningside started playing football games in what is now Elwood Olsen Stadium, the whistle went silent. It just sat in the boiler room for years and years. Then one day someone brought the whistle to Johnson, and he put it in his office. It quickly became a conversation starter. A few people suggested that the college start blowing the whistle at football games again.

“Maintenance guys like to get stuff working, so we hooked it up to some air, and, by golly, it worked,” Johnson said.

So he made plans with Gene Ambroson, director of alumni relations, for the whistle to make its big comeback during the Homecoming football game.

Morningside senior Andrew Gerodias was helping the alumni office get ready for Homecoming when he overheard their plans. He convinced them that he should be the official whistle blower, and he rearranged his schedule so he could be at the game.

“First off, I love making noise, so that was big,” Gerodias said. “But other than that, I do like the whole idea that if this is something that picks up and carries on into the future, I can say I was a part of revitalizing that. As much as I like to say I have already left my mark on Morningside, this will just sort of add to that.”

Before the Homecoming game, they positioned the whistle above the shelter house, and they hooked it up to an air compressor provided by Stan Houston Equipment Co. This time around, their efforts were not in vain. They ended up having plenty of opportunities to blow the whistle, as Morningside College scored 71 points that day.

The whistle has been a fixture at games ever since.

Ambroson said he has tried to learn more about the whistle’s history, but he hasn’t had much success. He has yet to find anyone who has a clear memory of the whistle being blown during football games all those years ago, and he can find nothing in writing to confirm that the practice actually took place. This piece of history has survived only through word of mouth.

Even so, Ambroson said it is still an important connection with the past.

“Whether it’s truth or fiction, it ties us back to another generation of Morningside people,” Ambroson said. “It brings us a little closer together – the current generation and yesterday’s generation of Morningsiders.”

Chinese students remember highlights from their visit 26

Eight graduates from Hwa Nan Women’s College in Fuzhou, China, spent the 2009-2010 school year studying at Morningside College. In doing so, they were continuing a tradition and helping to begin something new.

They were continuing a tradition in that a Morningside College graduate was involved with the founding of Hwa Nan Women’s College in 1908 and served as the school’s first president. Hwa Nan’s second and third presidents also were Morningside graduates.

They also were participating in a new exchange program between Hwa Nan and Morningside.

Hwa Nan offers students the opportunity to earn the Chinese equivalent of an associate’s degree. The new exchange program gives a small number of Hwa Nan graduates preferential scholarships to enroll as full-time students at Morningside to earn a bachelor’s degree in international studies, and it gives a Morningside faculty member and possibly some students the opportunity to go to Hwa Nan in the summer to teach for a month.

This first group of Hwa Nan graduates arrived on campus in July of 2009. They participated in a summer orientation course that introduced them to faculty members, American college life and the culture of the Midwest, and immersed them in reading, writing and speaking activities to better prepare them for senior-level college coursework at Morningside.

The students took four courses in the fall, four courses in the spring, a May Term course and a four-credit summer internship to gain real-world experience with a local business. They started leaving Morningside once they finished their internships, just as another group of Hwa Nan graduates arrived on campus to participate in the second year of the program.

Throughout last year, we collected comments and photos from the first group of Hwa Nan graduates to attend Morningside. Read on for some of the highlights.

When we arrived

“When I got to Morningside, it seemed that the people here are more independent than in our country. During class, the students have their own opinions towards a topic. When it comes to discussion groups or teamwork, the group members work hard, everyone is in charge of one part, and then the group comes together with a whole idea.”

“When I first came to this college, it was wonderful. Everything was fresh for me. The people are nice. They smile at you and help you when you have trouble.

And the weather and the environment are great. There are animals here, squirrels and rabbits. During the orientation course, I visited different kinds of places, which left me excited because I had never gone before. I loved all of them.”

Some surprises “No high buildings. I watched some American movies before I came here, and it was all about New York life – the big cities. So when I first came here and I went to downtown and they go, ‘Here’s the downtown,’ I was like, ‘Here’s the downtown?’”

Paintings of Hwa Nan’s presidents from Morningside on display

This summer Hwa Nan Women’s College unveiled the third and final portrait in a series designed to commemorate Morningside College’s historic China connection.

Dr. Ida Belle Lewis 1909 joined Hwa Nan founder Lydia Trimble 1904 and Lucy Wang 1921 on the wall of the guest lounge in Hwa Nan’s newly-built International Teacher’s House in late July.

The complete series of portraits, several years in the making, were all done in a period appropriate style by noted local artist Li Xiaowei, a professor in the Fine Arts College of Fujian Normal University.

Xiaowei is a good friend of Lin Benchun, who is a past president of Hwa Nan Women’s College. His work was most recently on display at the 2010 Shanghai World Exposition. He stressed that he very consciously chose to depict the three Morningsiders in a more traditional portrait style, as it was “the best way to express their true spirit!”

The artist expressed no regrets for having taken time out of his busy schedule to work on the portraits; after spending many hours studying the photos and history of Hwa Nan’s first three presidents, he’d come to view them as “members of my Lucy Wang Lydia Trimble Dr. Ida Belle Lewis own family.”

Students capture the spirit of their May Term experiences

1st Place: “Tears of Joy” by Tennessee Bryant Taken at the Taj Mahal in India during the “Discover India” course with Dr. William Heyborne, assistant professor of biology, and Dr. Rachel Robson, assistant professor of biology.

“It’s 5:30 am. There is just now some traffic on the streets. The sun hasn’t yet ascended but it’s growing lighter. You make it through the security checkpoint, walk through some neat structures. You’re not quite sure where you’re headed, no one else is there, and then you turn a corner and there framed in a doorway she stands. You know her; you’ve seen her a thousand times before. It is the Taj Mahal, radiant in the morning rays. That image is so lasting.

It’s one I’ve seen in countless photographs and books. Then to be there in front of it, to see the sight, to be able to walk up to it and touch it, make it real. It is almost impossible to put into words. It’s breathtaking, it’s awe inspiring, it is serenity. That’s why I travel, to go where I’ve never been before and make the world real, make the image mean something more than just some color on the page, to be connected. They say the Taj Mahal is ‘a teardrop on the cheek of time.’ I think it is not sadness though; I think it is happiness. This was our final day in India, and the only sight we saw that day.”

“This photo was taken in downtown Dublin in a gigantic mall with awesome architectural features and interest. They had plants hanging outside of all of the windows, and the curved part of the building was right at the corner of one of the busiest streets in Dublin. Inside there was a giant clock and three stories of shops and places to eat. The weather was really nice for us during our trip, and it made for some great photo opportunities.”

Morningside College held a photo contest for students whose May Term courses took them off campus to destinations near and far. Here are the winners. “This photo was taken in a little girl’s room a week after the volcanic eruption. The room had not been cleaned yet because the roof needed to be repaired before the family could sleep in the house. I was with a couple of people, and we were taking supplies up to the people that lived on the mountain. These people were eating only once a day and drinking barely anything.

The water they had was so dirty, so new filters were a godsend. We also had more supplies for them. This image and this trip has changed my life because living in America we lose sight of what matters most. People down there get by with so little and still live an enjoyable life.”

“In a country of over a billion people, you would think there would be more tension. Upset people scurrying around trying to get over and around everyone else – a lot like how the movies make the big city out to be. Well, you’d be wrong. Yes, it’s a work day. Yes, it’s rush hour. And your point is? It’s just everyday life in India. This image brings back the insanity of the roads in India, where a horn is in constant use, the lanes are suggestions and even which side of the road you can use is often indiscernible. As we were driving through one of the streets in Jaipur I happened to really find that moment and caught it on film.”

“I had been out taking pictures for about two hours when I decided I wanted to give my legs and my mind a break.

I walked up to the door that led to our rooms when this barn swallow (I think that's what it is) came out of nowhere and started dive-bombing me. I got my camera back out and started snapping photos, and it just continued its attack. It never really touched me, but there were many times that it got very close. I decided to see what it would do if I backed up a little, so I took one step away from the door and the brave little bird landed on the ledge above the door. It stood there looking at me, daring me to come close again. So, I snapped a picture and took one step toward it. As I thought, the little swallow began his kamikaze attack again. I was amazed by this little bird's commitment and fortitude – it was beautiful. I thought she must be protecting a nest nearby. I will never forget this little swallow and her unrelenting vigor.”

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience! There were two other students and one pilot with me. We flew all the way around Mount McKinley and landed at what they call Base Camp. It is a place on the mountain range where pilots take people wanting to climb Mount McKinley, and it is where they gather the climbers for the night. From that point, we could see the tip of Mount McKinley, which was about 15 miles away from Base Camp. The views we saw from the plane were breathtaking and so beautiful.”

“We took a ferry ride from Galway and rented bikes to ride around and explore the island for most of the day. We got to see a lot of animals such as horses, donkeys, cows and seals. There were a lot of trails to ride our bikes or take carriage rides. We also got to climb to the top of an old lighthouse and get a bird's-eye view of most of the island. The scenery was awesome!”

“The seals at the SeaLife Center were really playful. They had an underwater viewing area so you could watch them swim, and this one came up and played with Charlie Nixon through the glass. They played for a while. The seal would follow Charlie's hands when he moved them, and when I got this picture, the seal stopped to look at him. I like this picture so well because it is one of those once-in-a-lifetime shots that you only get if you are in the right place at the right time.”

“During the long winter months, the northern Alaskan tribes played jumping games to keep in shape and build endurance for the spring hunts.

The men would dip their moccasins in the fire's ashes to prove to others that their feet had indeed touched the ceiling. In this particular jump, the young man is about to kick a suspended toy.

Hundreds of games exist yet today. Each July the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics takes place in Fairbanks, Alaska. The men's record for the Alaskan one-foot high kick is 8 feet 10 inches.”

Jeremy Schnieder, Ph.D., assistant professor of writing and rhetoric, joins the faculty after serving as a teaching assistant, placement essay evaluator and assistant to the director of the general studies writing program at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Schnieder has a doctorate in rhetoric and writing from Bowling Green State University.

Kurt Spearing, Ph.D. (ABD), assistant professor of biology and chemistry, comes to Morningside after serving on the faculty at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn., and at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.

Spearing is a doctoral candidate in biological sciences at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

J. Jeffrey Zink, Ph.D., assistant professor of business administration and economics, comes to Morningside after serving as a visiting assistant professor of economics at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Zink has a doctorate in economics from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Jill Wilson, D.M.A., assistant professor of music, is in a new position after serving two years as a visiting instructor of music education at Morningside College.

Wilson has a doctorate in music education from Boston University in Massachusetts.

New Staff

Keith Burke, general maintenance, has come to Morningside after previously working in positions as a roofer and a pipe fitter and welder.

At Morningside, he is responsible for general maintenance and repair for Morningside College buildings.

Barb Chambers 1977, graduate professional development and field coordinator, has been hired to manage graduate programming off campus in assigned areas and to work with

off-campus partners to provide ongoing professional development opportunities for teachers. She comes to Morningside from Northwest Area Education Agency, where she served as a professional development coordinator. Chambers has a master’s degree from Morningside College.

Kristal Grigsby, switchboard operator, came to Morningside from Wilson Trailer Company in Sioux City, where she was a switchboard operator and accounts payable clerk. At Morningside, she is responsible for operating the Morningside College switchboard and providing assistance in the business office.

Grigsby has an associate’s degree from Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City.

Lindsey Huber, head dance and cheer coach, is in charge of program implementation for the dance and cheer teams at Morningside College.

She previously was assistant director of 5678! Dance Studio in North Sioux City, S.D. Huber has a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in Ames.

Joseph Lasley, area coordinator/student engagement coordinator, has been hired to coordinate the day-to-day essential functions of assigned residence halls; coordinate the campus Leadership Academy, wellness halls, campus wellness programs; and collaborate with campus offices on the Sophomore Experience program. He previously worked as a graduate assistant hall director at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. Lasley has a master’s degree from St. Cloud State University.

Corey Young, area coordinator/coordinator of student activities, came to Morningside after graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Dubuque in Iowa. In his position at Morningside, he coordinates dayto-day functions of assigned residence halls and assists in the development of student activities and programs through the Morningside Activities Council, multicultural programs and Homecoming.

Sheri Hineman assumed new duties as assistant director of residence life. She coordinates the day-to-day functions of assigned residence halls, serves as residence life office manager, is responsible for the Residence Hall Association and coordinates the programming efforts of residence life paraprofessional staff. Hineman has a master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Randy Peters 1985 recently assumed additional responsibilities at Morningside. He continues to serve as artistic director for the Betty Ling Tsang Summer Fine Arts Series, coordinating events at the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center. He also is serving as production manager/building manager for Klinger-Neal Theatre. Peters has a bachelor’s degree from Morningside College.

Andrew Pflipsen assumed new duties as associate dean of students. He is responsible for residence life, student government, discipline, diversity, international students, intramurals and other areas of student life.

Pflipsen has a master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

Suzy Turnquist 1990 assumed new duties as administrative assistant for the chemistry, biology, physics, psychology, math and computer science departments. She assists with general office responsibilities, and she assists the department chairs with various tasks.

Turnquist has a bachelor’s degree from Morningside College.

Staff Notes

Jerry Schmutte, athletic director, received a Titan Award in November 2009 from the Norris School District’s educational foundation. Titan Award winners are selected based on their actions, words, deeds and service to the Norris School District in Nebraska. Schmutte was a boys’ basketball coach at Norris High School.

He led the school to a state championship in 1979, and, at the time, the longest undefeated winning streak in basketball in the history of the state. He also was an assistant coach on Norris’ 1979 state championship football team.

Twenty years ago, near the end of the Cold War, the Threshold Test Ban Treaty was finally ratified by the United States and the Soviet Union. This was significant because it prohibited both countries from testing nuclear weapons stronger than 150,000 tons of TNT. The treaty was originally signed in 1974, but it was not ratified for another 16 years because the two countries could not agree on a way to verify that both sides were complying with the agreement.

But then, in the 1980s, the United States proposed verification technology that had been pioneered and developed by Morningside College graduate Don Eilers 1956, according to publications of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.

CORRTEX technology was far more accurate than the alternative, and it was unique in that it required on-site verification of treaty compliance, according to laboratory publications. In other words, the technology would involve Soviet and American scientists working side-by-side at nuclear test sites.

Eilers said he had been working on this technology since 1975, so he was excited when his dream finally started to become a reality.

“I felt all the time like this was really going to happen. Most other people thought I was crazy, I think. No foreigners had ever set foot on a Russian test site before. All doubters were proven wrong,” he said with a chuckle.

However, the two countries did not reach an agreement overnight.

Eilers said he made 30 or more trips to Geneva, Switzerland; Washington, D.C.; and nuclear test sites in the Soviet Union and the United States before treaty negotiations were completed. He served as technical expert for the U.S. delegation and as U.S. scientific team leader of the Joint Verification Experiments.

He said a wonderful thing happened as Soviet and American scientists worked together to each serve their own country’s interests; they wound up becoming friends.

“When you work on a nuclear test, you’ve got a lot of problems to solve, and you spend a lot of time working side-by-side to find technical solutions,”

he said. “We found out that physics is physics everywhere. We solve our problems similarly, and so when we had problems, we could work them out.”

After months of working together at the test sites, Eilers remembers a conversation he had with Viktor Mikhailov, a leader among the Russian scientists. He said Mikhailov told him that he used to be involved in selecting target cities in the United States for nuclear attacks, but, looking back, that job would be a lot more difficult for him to do now.

“He said, ‘I can put faces on the other end of where those missiles would land,’” Eilers remembered. “He found out that, of course, we were just like them – human beings and friends. Very, very difficult compared to when he did it originally.”

The Threshold Test Ban Treaty was ratified in 1990, and Eilers retired in 1991. When he retired, he received a commendation letter from President George H.W. Bush thanking him for helping to make possible key agreements with the Soviet Union.

“Don Eilers not only made crucial technical contributions to enable the Joint Verification Experiments; he was one of the most effective ambassadors we had to the Russian nuclear scientific community,” said Dr. Siegfried Hecker, who was director of Los Alamos National Laboratory when Eilers worked there.

“It was his professional and personal friendship that he struck with the Russian nuclear weapons scientists that built the foundation for the subsequent lab-to-lab nuclear cooperation programs that jointly addressed some of the greatest nuclear threats that resulted from the breakup of the Soviet Union – such as the security of their nuclear weapons and materials.

The world is a safer place today because of Don Eilers.”

The most advanced degree Eilers ever completed was the one he earned from Morningside. He began working at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1958.

“I was lucky to have been working in a job that I thought was important to the country that I was able to do,” he said. “I’ll always be thankful for that.”

Steve Kerzie was recently featured in an article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He had a distinguished career teaching, coaching and officiating in Minnesota. He has participated in more than 50 state high school track meets as either a coach or an official. Kerzie spent most of his career at Gilbert High School in Minnesota. He coached football, basketball, track, baseball and cross country, and he taught until he was 76. He officiated football, cross country, basketball, baseball, softball and track.

He is a member of several Minnesota halls of fame. Kerzie played football, basketball and track while he was a student at Morningside.

Warren Conner of Omaha, Neb., has started, sold and retired from a couple of businesses over the years. He found himself bored again and this time took a part-time job with the Nebraska chapter of The Nature Conservancy as its first gift planning officer. After almost eight years, he retired again at age 65. This time he is enjoying the freedom retirement provides and is having a good time puttering around his small acreage and doing a little volunteering.

He has been serving on the 50th anniversary reunion committee for his class at Morningside.

Herbert Harris was honored as a member of the Royal Order of Scotland in August 2010.

Jerry Houpt and his wife, Karen, live in Sioux City. He is enjoying his retirement and finds plenty of time for grandchildren, golf, reading and, of course, playing in various bands. He was privileged to be part of the rhythm section behind the candidates when Dr. David Lambert recently was selected to serve as the new director of instrumental jazz at Morningside.

Fern (Venekamp) Laingen of Lake Crystal, Minn., retired five years ago after a long career in education. She was a church educational assistant, English teacher, school librarian, nanny and church secretary. Now she creates quilts for family, friends and a wide number of charities. One of her quilts won a bid of $750 in a church camp auction. She helps organize and attends quilting retreats and classes. She has four grown children and six grandchildren. Her husband, Ronald, passed away in December 2009 after a long illness.

Nancylee (Hanson) Ziese and her husband, Jerry, live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A licensed social worker, Nancylee remains active with a variety of social services commissions and boards. She chairs the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, serves on the Iowa Child Advocacy Board, co-chairs the Women’s Equality Day Committee, teaches Marriage and the Family at Kirkwood Community College, and in private practice completes adoption studies and serves as clinic advisor/counselor at the Community Health Free Clinic. Jerry will retire at the end of the year, but Nancylee can't quite bring herself to let it all go yet. They have a daughter, Graham, who is lead teacher in a day care and is working toward a degree in early childhood education.

Dr. Arlie Daniel, professor of communication at East Central University in Ada, Okla., was inducted into the Central States Communication Association Hall of Fame in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The recognition is presented to individuals who have retired or are nearing retirement and who have contributed to the field of communication through teaching, scholarship or significant mentoring at any level of education. Daniel served as the Central States Communication Association’s executive director from 1994 to 1997 and as its president from 1999 to 2000.

He also served on the association’s executive committee for more than 10 years, holding other offices in the association leading up to his years of association leadership. Daniel retired in June after 29 years at East Central University.

Dr. Tyrone Greive and his wife, Janet Rayburn Greive, who was a part-time cello instructor at Morningside from 1964 to 1965, retired recently from the Madison Symphony Orchestra in Wisconsin. They were with the orchestra for 31 years, including Tyrone's last 20 years as concertmaster. Tyrone will continue serving as concertmaster for select concerts until a successor is named in the spring of 2011. Tyrone continues to teach full time at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has been professor of violin since 1979. His latest of many publications, "The Appearance of the Violin in Poland and Italian Links to Paths of Polish Royal Patronage," will appear in an upcoming issue of the Violin Society of America’s VSA Papers journal.

Galen Johnson began a new stage in his life on Sept. 1 when he retired following a longtime career at Minneapolis-based Cargill, the largest privately-owned company in the United States.

Johnson joined the company’s accounting management development program in September of 1968 and eventually worked his way up the ladder to corporate vice president and controller.

“My Morningside education opened a lot of doors and provided me with interview opportunities coming out of college with many Fortune 500 companies, the major accounting firms, large governmental agencies and private companies such as Cargill,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the period in America’s history played a significant role in his ultimate decision to pick Cargill.

“The economy was pretty tough at the time and the Vietnam War was going on,” Johnson said. “Most companies were willing to hire people coming out of college, but they also wanted you to fulfill your military obligations first before they would hire you.

“I had some other good offers, but they were contingent on my completing my military obligations. Cargill was the only company that was willing to hire me right away even though they knew I would be drafted in three or four months.”

Johnson worked at Cargill for six months before the Army called. Following completion of basic training, Johnson was assigned to Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. He was one of the few who didn’t wind up in Vietnam after he used his power of persuasion to bring back a soldier from his barracks who went absent without leave.

“I went to his home in East St. Louis and spoke to his mother outside the house,” Johnson said. “She wouldn’t let me in, but I could tell that he was inside listening. I explained that the Army provided a one-time opportunity for him to come back or he would be court-martialed. He did eventually come back and the Army decided to have me continue bringing back soldiers who went AWOL.”

Johnson was eventually assigned to Fort Sheridan near Chicago and was in the service for only five months before he returned to Cargill.

“At that time Cargill wasn’t the big company that it is today,” Johnson said. “It was a company where I felt I could grow along with the company if I did well. The nice thing about a growth company is that it gives you great opportunities. As I grew and was ready for something bigger, the company always had something to offer me.”

Two things that Morningside offered Johnson were the promise of strong academics and the opportunity to play baseball.

Johnson played shortstop and was an occasional relief pitcher on the Morningside baseball team, where he played for longtime head coach Don Protexter 1949.

Playing for the baseball team provided Johnson with his first real opportunities to travel after growing up on a farm in the small town of Hector, Minn.

“Those spring trips were one of the highlights of my Morningside experience,” Johnson said. “We had some rebels on our team who caused ‘Pro’ to completely lose his hair. Those guys had fun and missed a few curfews, but they were really good guys and it’s not a surprise to see how successful my teammates have become in their lives.”

Playing for the baseball team also provided Johnson with the opportunity to get to know Dick Weikert 1953, who taught in the business department and was an assistant coach for the baseball team, serving as interim head coach one year.

“His style of positive reinforcement and encouragement always kept me feeling good about myself and my capabilities,” Johnson said. “I did not want to let him down, and I worked hard to prove that I was worthy of his confidence and support. My experiences with him shaped my coaching and mentoring style throughout my professional career.”

Now that he is retired, Johnson will have more time to pursue some of his passions.

“I hope to spend more time with family and friends and also be a bit selfish in that I want to do some things that my work kept me from doing,” Johnson said. “I want to travel a bit and exercise and golf more. I also want to get active in a few nonprofit organizations, and I need to right-size my sports memorabilia collection.

“I view retirement as an opportunity for renewal and giving back,” he said. “I am going to take a bit of time to figure out what I am most passionate about.”

Dr. Tom Narak will retire in June from his position as superintendent of schools for the West Des Moines Community School District in Iowa, ending his 41-year career in education.

Carol (Dahl) Narak will retire from Norwalk Community Schools in Iowa in June after 38 years of teaching in various schools. She was a high school teacher-librarian and a special education teacher.

Dr. bill russell was in Atlanta in August to direct “Pageant,” the musical for which he co-wrote the book and lyrics with Frank Kelly. The show ran through Oct. 24. Russell’s musical “The Last Smoker in America” made its world premiere at CATCO (Contemporary American Theatre Company) on Oct. 6 in Columbus, Ohio. Russell’s work was celebrated at the Canal Room in New

York City on June 29 when Nick Cearley, Alice Ripley and Lauren Molina guest-starred in “still bill – lyrics and poems by bill russell,” a compilation of songs from russell’s past musicals. Russell’s “Lucky Duck” had a twomonth run at the Coterie Theatre in Kansas City from late June to early August. His musical “Side Show” started a tour of Sweden – in Swedish – on Oct. 9.

The Rev. Fred Lewis, senior pastor at Ames First United Methodist Church in Ames, Iowa, was invited by Bishop Julius Trimble to serve as a spiritual guide for the 2010 Iowa Annual Conference. Lewis is a past national president of The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts and a former national vice president of the Christian Educators Fellowship of The United Methodist Church. He has published articles in various church journals and co-teaches the worship and music section of the Iowa School for Lay Ministry. He is celebrating his 30th anniversary of being an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church.

Tim Jackes received seven scholarship offers during his senior year at Holstein High School in Iowa. He said a campus visit with high school athletic director Russell Kraai 1939 played a major role in his decision to attend Morningside.

“He sat down with my dad and me and said even though I had some opportunities to attend some of the bigger schools, he thought I would find myself much more comfortable in a smaller environment,” Jackes said. “I wanted to go to a college where I could play football, but I also knew it was important to get a degree that works for you.”

Jackes attended Morningside on a football scholarship as a defensive end and was successful enough to be drafted by the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He was inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame in 1991. Sixteen years later, his daughter Jill (Jackes) Bartosh 1994, who was a standout volleyball player at Morningside, joined him in the M-Club Hall of Fame.

After Jackes arrived at Morningside, the wisdom of an education professor, Dr. Sharon Ocker, helped steer him down the right career path.

“My plan was to minor in business and major in education because I wanted to be a coach and teach business,” Jackes said. “After a few classes with Dr. Ocker, he talked with me because he wasn’t really sure if that was the direction I should be going. I’ve always appreciated that honesty from him because he could see that my drive was more in the leadership and business type of thing and not so much in the classroom environment.”

Two others who made a big impact were Lowell “Bud” Brockman, the defensive line coach, and Dwight Packard, who taught in the business department.

Jackes attended Morningside at a time when freshmen were required to wear beanies the first few weeks of school.

Wash., recently was recognized by HealthLeaders Media as a member of the top leadership team in health care for mid-sized hospitals. He presented at the HealthLeaders Media annual conference in Chicago on the turnaround that his team had made in patient satisfaction and quality care.

Dr. Tim Orwig received his doctorate in American and New England studies from Boston University in May 2010. His dissertation was “Joseph Everett Chandler, Colonial Revival Architecture, and the Origins of Historic Preservation in New England.” Orwig had several articles published in the spring of 2010, and his book “Remembering Boston” was published by Trade Paper Press in May 2010.

Mike Wells, president and CEO of Wells’ Dairy in Le Mars, Iowa, has joined the Iowa Business Council. Membership in the council is by invitation and includes 24 members: the top executives of 20 of the largest businesses in the state, the presidents of Iowa’s three public universities, and the CEO of the state’s largest banking association.

The Rev. Matthew C. Harrison was elected president of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) during elections in July. With about 2.5 million members, LCMS is the secondlargest Lutheran church body in North America.

“Whenever an upperclassman came along, you had to touch the button on top of your hat, bend down and say, ‘Please Mr. Upperclassman, sir or ma’am, can I do this again?’” Jackes said. “And if they said yes, you had to do it again until they left you alone.”

After three or four days, Jackes had had enough of the beanie.

“I took that beanie and stuck it in my back pocket because I thought it would be a great way to meet some of the freshman women,” he said. “But all of the upperclassmen on the football team knew that I was a freshman, and there was a penalty for getting caught without your hat.”

Jackes was sent to what was called “Kangaroo Court” to receive his punishment.

“I had to get on my hands and knees and push a peanut around the gym floor with my nose in front of the other students,” Jackes said. “I had a brand new pair of corduroy jeans that my parents had given me, and I wore a hole in them.”

While he was a student, Jackes had a part-time job at the stockyards and also worked at Sioux City Cold Storage as a truck loader during the holidays.

“After I graduated, I was drafted both to the NFL and the military, and the military service won,” Jackes said.

“The cold storage company I had been working at offered me a job as a superintendent and told me they would hold it for me until I got back from the military.”

Jackes served six months with the Army National Guard before he came back to Sioux City Cold Storage. He eventually worked his way up to president of the company by 1978. From there he joined Iowa Beef Packers (IBP) as director of warehousing at the firm’s Dakota City corporate office and partnered with Millard Warehouse in Omaha as president of the company.

In March of 1989, Jackes started his own company, Quality Refrigerated Services in Omaha, where he is president and CEO. The firm has warehouses in Omaha and Spencer, Iowa, as well as processing divisions in both cities.

Jackes credits his Morningside liberal arts education for helping to make all he has achieved possible.

“There is an old saying: ‘What is down in your well comes up in your bucket,’” Jackes said. “That is why a Morningside education is such a gift because you have an opportunity to put a lot of good and healthy stuff into your well during those four years that will come up in your bucket for the rest of your life.”

Dr. Robert Larson is a chiropractor at Shea Chiropractic Clinic in Phoenix, Ariz. Larson was a pitcher on the Morningside baseball team and pitches one game a year for the Sioux City Saints during his annual summer visits to Sioux City.

Dr. Craig Wansink is chair of the religious studies department and associate dean of the college at Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk.

His primary research focuses on the history of ancient Roman prisons and ancient Christianity, but through Harvard University's Pluralism Project he also has done extensive research on contemporary world religions in Hampton Roads, bringing together academic life through his college, religious work through his church, and community service throughout the area (the Norfolk-Virginia Beach metropolitan area in southeastern Virginia).

Lisa (McDermott) Wiese was honored as the Iowa Reading Administrator of the Year at the Iowa Reading Association banquet held in April in Des Moines. Wiese is the principal of South O’Brien Elementary School in Primghar and the curriculum coordinator for the South O’Brien Community School District.

Jill (Knapp) Moravek, a sociology instructor at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, graduated in May from Iowa State University in Ames with a doctorate in sociology. She also received departmental and university-wide research excellence awards for the research she conducted for her doctoral dissertation on issues of race, which was called “Being Black in a White Institution.”

One of the most valuable skills Linda (Hoogensen) Graff learned during her time at Morningside was how to multitask and balance a hectic schedule.

Between the academic rigors of pursuing a double major in accounting and computer science and playing for both the volleyball and softball teams, it would be an understatement to say she stayed busy.

“While in college I was balancing two majors and two sports, working part-time as a bookkeeper at the Sioux City Art Center, and enjoying college life,” Graff said. “That ability to balance multiple things at the same time and then to have the ability to carry on that skill has been very important in my professional career and personal life.”

She certainly displayed that ability while she was a student by graduating with honors and by achieving Academic All-America and All-Io-Kota Conference honors as a first baseman for the softball team.

“If I had gone to a larger school, I think my focus would have been almost entirely on getting the degree and not being able to experience being part of the campus life as much as you can do at a smaller school,” she said.

Graff cited Dr. Doug Livermore, a professor in the business department, and Dr. Miles Tommeraasen 1943, who was president of the college, for their assistance in getting her professional career started when she joined Arthur Andersen & Co. out of college. She worked in the firm’s world headquarters in Chicago for two years and then in its Chicago consulting office for three more years.

“Dr. Livermore was so willing to spend time with me as an individual and talk to me about what was going on in my life and helping me to choose a career,” Graff said. “He was very helpful in getting me started with Arthur Andersen.”

Morningside earlier in his career, helped ease Graff’s hesitancy to move on to the major metropolis of Chicago after she had grown up in the rural community of Harlan, Iowa. Tommeraasen had once made a similar move himself after he was raised in the tiny town of Larchwood, Iowa.

Graff eventually returned to Iowa for employment with The Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, where she held various technology and human resource positions before joining Wells Fargo in 1999, where she is now a vice president.

Looking back on her time at Morningside, Graff said it’s the friendships she made and the camaraderie of being part of a team that made a lasting impression.

“Some of my favorite Morningside memories came from my sophomore year when I lived in a suite on the first floor of Dimmitt with three other roommates – Shaunda (Bowen) Calkins 1986, Carla (Kock) Ironside 1986 and Marsha (Ryan) Pope 1985,” she said. “I remember those nights of laughter when we were supposed to be studying, but instead we would be talking about boys and other stuff. You still think about those times years later.

“From a sports perspective, it’s not so much a particular game that you remember, but things like the times you spent in the van on the way to the games,” she said. “You remember the camaraderie you developed with your teammates and just the fun you had doing something that you loved.”

One of Graff’s favorite professors was Dr. William Steinman in the mathematical sciences department.

“He is the one who stands out from the computer science group,” she said. “He made the classes fun and said we were going to solve business problems by being able to code. The accounting classes were probably my favorites. My most dreaded class was business law, probably because it was at 8 in the morning. Actually, any class I had at that time was my least favorite.”

Graff was back on campus during Homecoming to help her brother, Ken Hoogensen 1966, a former football standout, celebrate his induction into the M-Club Hall of Fame.

She was impressed with the changes she saw on campus.

“It was kind of a blend between the old and the new,” she said. “The outsides of the buildings looked the same in many ways, but the insides were very modernized. The campus had a great look to it.”

Several of Graff’s nieces and nephews also visited the college during Homecoming, and they are of the age where picking a college is on their minds.

“I think they were impressed,” she said. “I know that I was very proud of Morningside from what I saw.”

Cecilia (Heiser) Baldwin teaches elementary music, band and individual music classes for Spalding Public School in Nebraska. She and her husband, Michael Baldwin 1999, have three daughters: Sadie, 4; Amelia, 2; and Julia, 5 months.

Brett Werner received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Denver in June 2010 and accepted a one-year visiting instructor position in the mathematics department at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Donald W. Verdoorn, Lone Tree, Colo., died Oct. 10, 2010. Verdoorn served on the Morningside College Board of Directors from 1989-1996 and from 2008-2010. During his early years on the board, he served as co-chair of the Acceleration Program, a campaign that raised more than $18 million and supported construction of the Hindman/Hobbs Center. More recently, Verdoorn was a naming donor for renovations to the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center-Allee Gym. He also provided funding for the Buckingham Athletic Scholarship. Survivors include his wife, Paula; two children; and three stepchildren.

Muller was a former Morningside faculty member who received an honorary doctorate from the college in 2006.

Dr. Abel Muzorewa, Harare, Zimbabwe, died April 8, 2010. Muzorewa served as prime minister of “Zimbabwe Rhodesia” in 1979.

Muzorewa had three brothers who graduated from Morningside College, and he received an honorary doctorate from Morningside in 1980.

Dr. Richard Nunneley, Sioux City, died Oct. 23, 2010. Nunneley came to Morningside College in July to serve as dean of the graduate education program.

Morningside College professor being featured on History cable channel Dr. Bruce Forbes 1970, professor and chair of religious studies at Morningside College, is featured on “The Real Story of Christmas,” a one-hour special detailing the history of Christmas and the history behind the traditions, customs and symbols of the holiday.

Forbes was one of four Christmas historians interviewed for the show. He was chosen because he wrote a book on the topic titled “Christmas: A Candid History,” which can be purchased by going online to store.morningside.edu and clicking on the “General Books” link.

“The Real Story of Christmas” is appearing on the History cable channel several times during the holidays.
