MEET THE NEWCOMERS
In 2020, Morningside welcomed 74 new students from 14 countries and regions. Although not all of them could come to campus in the past year, we are thrilled to present what some of them have to tell us about their experiences so far at Morningside and CUHK!

My first year at CUHK and Morningside has been full of pleasant surprises. I started off the fall semester thinking I would be stuck at home, and I did not expect to make a lot of friends. I was not sure about my ability to take in information through online classes. However, all of my worries eventually dissipated. Online classes were not as bad as I thought. I was actually learning a lot, and the professors were really helpful (tutorials were an added bonus!). The first-years were also extremely friendly, and I ended up making more friends than I had anticipated. Of course, moving into Morningside was the icing on the cake. Living on campus, making new friends and doing (a few) face-to-face classes has made my first year extremely enjoyable. Amidst a pandemic, I think that it could not have been any better.

When I first arrived at Morningside, I was nervous about the prospect of entering this new place and meeting new people, but now I am so grateful and happy that I’m here. For me, the most important thing has been the communal dinners that happen three times a week. Although we cannot eat in the dining hall, the dinners still gave me a chance to meet with my fellow Morningsiders and talk about our day and how everything is going. I’ve learnt the value and importance of kindness and friendship from this community, where everyone is so welcoming and supportive. This has truly been a remarkable school year and Morningside has really become a home away from home for me. I very much look forward to my next few years here.

The first time I visited Hong Kong, I fell in love with it immediately. A magnificent combination of breathtaking nature with enormous skyscrapers and a megapolis’s spirit makes me attached to this city. I am sure that my career and personal paths have just started in Hong Kong, and this fantastic city has prepared many opportunities that are yet to come.

To be honest, because of the pandemic, I do not have many feelings as a first-year student. However, I am grateful that I met a lot of interesting people after I moved into Morningside, which really broadened my horizons. It is my first time meeting peers from so many different continents, and having conversations with them about language, culture, politics, and our everyday life is an exciting and enriching experience!

From the get-go, I feel honoured and privileged to be part of the Morningside community. I am also humbled by the gesture of being presented an Honours at Entrance and Scholarship, both of which were beyond my expectation. Such recognition in the first year puts me in a difficult spot as I have been bestowed with great responsibility to excel academically and, hopefully, one day become a proud alumni of Morningside and CUHK. Nonetheless, I am more appreciative and grateful to Morningside and CUHK for everything they have supported me with thus far.

As a first-year student at Morningside and at CUHK, I have mixed feelings. Competition at CUHK is fiercer than I imagined, which sometimes makes me quite anxious about my grades and future studies. However, this academic environment is also a powerful motivator for me to work more efficiently and to discover my potential in order to become a better person. In addition, I feel really grateful to Morningside College, which provides students with abundant resources and whose staff are very considerate, patient and helpful. Furthermore, I appreciate that the students at CUHK, especially at Morningside, possess unique personalities. By interacting with them, I learnt about different cultures, values, and attitudes toward life. Such exposure improves my ability to think from multiple perspectives.

As a first-year student, I’m new to everything around Morningside and the University. I suppose online learning simplifies a lot of things, leaving only the courses for me to focus on. As a result, the first semester is rather relaxing (for me at least). One thing I’m not so used to is how quick people come and go in classes, perhaps it’s how courses in universities are designed; it’s difficult to get to know people, or who knows, maybe it’s because of online classes. Anyways, I have yet to experience what it is exactly like to be at Morningside, but I’m sure it will be great. Looking forward to meeting new friends when I can finally be on campus!

Being a first-year student at Morningside is an amazing experience! Since everything is new to me, stepping out of Morningside always feels like I am embarking on an adventure. Occasionally, I will stumble upon unexplored areas, which feels like I unlocked a new “achievement”. Now that I am more familiar with CUHK, I can’t help but be enamoured by its breathtaking scenery. I really like staring at the trees outside my window as the natural light makes its way into my room. I also like walking on the bridge that connects the T and G blocks, because it allows me to see Morningside and beyond with a bird’s eye view. The calming view always makes my day. I also enjoyed the courses I have taken so far! Course contents were surprisingly diverse and are more interesting than I thought they would be. As a STEM major, I never knew I would be learning about philosophy, but it was unexpectedly fun (before I had to write papers)! The cherry on top of everything is that I get to meet a lot of new people (and dogs). Listening to their stories is always fun.

I never expected my first year of university to start in such a “unique” way. I expected to study on campus, interacting with people face to face, not attending classes in my room wearing my pajamas. Fortunately, the virtual orientation with senior Morningsiders (my Joma and Joba) as well as the professors, Junior Fellows, and my friends from GEMC1001 made me feel welcomed at CUHK and Morningside. Lulu Miller is a Peabody awardwinning science journalist, co-host of the US public radio show Radiolab, and the author of this year’s One Book Programme selection, Why Fish Don’t Exist. While Miller was not able to visit campus as a result of the pandemic, she was still able to make an impact on the Morningside community through two virtual visits. In November, she gave a guest lecture to students in the college’s first-year general education seminar, Current Dilemmas and their Histories, discussing the ethical questions that arise in her book and challenging students to think critically about the biases they carry within themselves. They were super fantastical, and I think they were a form of joyful escape. I could imagine as I went, so the act of writing itself became a kind of an adventure.” Miller wanted to grow up to become a novelist but her penchant for storytelling did not lead her directly to a career in writing. “We had the radio on in the woodshop all day, and I was really enjoying the form,” she explained. “I found that the shows had a similar effect to writing where I could really be transported by them. I remember laughing at really funny stories and crying at emotional ones - there was just this magnetism to that type of long form audio documentary.”

This magnetism led Miller to Radiolab, an award-winning public radio show that explores topics in science, philosophy, and ethics through storytelling. She began as a volunteer, wanting to learn more about this journalistic form that she now felt drawn to and eventually, she was hired as the show’s first producer. She spent the next five years learning the process of creating audio documentary stories, but she quickly realized that her urge to tell a story was not always an asset in journalism.

Why Fish Don’t Exist and the dangers of the search for order While narratives can be gripping and useful in motivating an audience’s engagement with a story, they can also lead to oversimplifications, masking the truth and creating an appearance of connections that do not really exist. Through her more than 15 years as a reporter, Miller learned that a writer’s desire for an orderly narrative can actually hinder her ability to present reality’s true complexity. This struggle comes alive in Miller’s first book, Why Fish Don’t Exist, which seamlessly weaves her own quest for meaning in the world with the story of David Starr Jordan, a renowned taxonomist who is credited with discovering more than 2,500 species of fish.

The non-fiction novella, or “non-vella” as Miller affectionately calls it, began over ten years ago as an essay where she reflected on a memory from a childhood vacation to Cape Cod (photo, opposite page). She and her father had been standing on a deck looking out over the ocean when she asked him about the meaning of life. “My dad essentially said the work of being a good human is to be really humble and aware of the fact that you’re never going to succeed. There is no God, no afterlife, no destiny, and no fate. It’s likely that you’ll be wiped out by chaos quickly,” Miller recounted. “In contrast, David Starr Jordan felt like this counterpoint, a figure who basically put his middle finger up to the fates and represented a really different way to march through life. His defiance tickled at me because of the way my dad told me I should be oriented to chaos.” Why Fish Don’t Exist takes readers alongside Miller on her journey of researching the life of Jordan, leading up to the discovery that his life’s mission to uncover the secret order of the animal kingdom was not as noble as it first appeared. By revealing the troubling connections between Jordan’s work and his advocacy for the eugenics movement, Miller illustrates how quests for order and attempts to make sense of the world can lead to dangerous ideologies about how society, and the world as a whole, is and ought to be structured. Ironically, the forces that Miller comes to disavow in Why Fish Don’t Exist are the very same human instincts that led her to write the book in the first place: “I had this fire to connect the dots of his life in order to write a book saying don’t connect the dots. Even while I was questioning him, what it took for me to dig up his gnarly dirty sides was the same quality I end up critiquing in the book, which is that desire to hammer, and hammer, and hammer in order to make things line up.” Perhaps this is why Why Fish Don’t Exist unfurls like a good horror film. The reader begins in the same place as Miller and Jordan do, trying to make sense of a world in which there appears to be little logic or reason. We watch in amazement as each time fate deals Jordan another blow, whether it is the death of his daughter or an earthquake that destroys his life’s work, he picks up his sewing needle intent on restoring the small amount of order he has been able to create. Meanwhile, Miller slowly pulls back the curtain to reveal the nefarious ends Jordan is willing to go to in order to maintain his neat picture of the world. By the end of the book, we find ourselves feeling just as betrayed by Jordan as Jane Stanford must have felt in 1905.

While Miller recognizes the horrendous ramifications of Jordan’s work, she also has respect for his resilience in the face of life’s chaotic forces. When the pandemic broke out, Miller found herself thinking a lot about how Jordan would respond to it. “Surprisingly, I was thinking about how I could use his powers for good.” Miller explained. “I asked myself, what would someone like him do in this pandemic moment?” Jordan was not the type of person who would sit around wallowing; rather, he would use the new things that chaos threw at him as a creative constraint, a way to sharpen and make better his ideas.
Then Miller saw the protests happening in the United States and how people were using their pent-up energy to force people to care about the issues affecting them. She saw innovations happening in the arts world with people creating new forms of connection in a very isolating time, as well as all the other ways people were using the pandemic as an opportunity to launch something new. Inspired, Miller decided to turn her own experience as a reporter during the lockdown into something that could bring people together. She realized that what she missed most about pre-pandemic life was being able to be out in the field, reporting on stories and connecting with people. Miller had been having a hard time sleeping and had read reports stating that many people were experiencing increases in insomnia during the pandemic – Corona-somnia. Lying awake at 2:00 AM one night, inspiration struck. “There's so many people awake right now,” she realized. “Wouldn't it be cool to just talk with them and connect us all in the space of insomnia when we're all a little bleary?” This led to the development of an episode of Radiolab titled “Insomnia Line.” The episode was Miller’s first as a host of the show, having previously worked as one of its producers. At 1:45 AM on a Thursday night, Miller and her team tweeted out the radio station’s phone number with the instructions: “If you’re awake, call us.” By 2:00 AM, they already had 40 voicemails, so she and her team began returning calls.

Whether she is exploring experiences of insomnia or the life of a twentieth century taxonomist and possible murderer, her work bridges the worlds of insight and story. Miller invites her audience to see the world through new eyes, with all its chaotic messiness and perplexing dilemmas. She does not claim to offer a perfect solution to these questions, but her work offers new ways of understanding and thinking about the challenges we face. Fans of Miller can look forward to her continued reporting work for Radiolab, a forthcoming children’s book, and a possible essay collection. Although she admits the thing that excites her most is spending time with her wife and two young children, Miller finds herself unable to turn away from writing about nature and the collision between human intuition and reality. Since completing Why Fish Don’t Exist, Miller looks forward to getting back to writing the way she did when she was a child. “In the couple of essays, I've written since publishing my book, I've tried to just let myself go at my own pace and write at the moments where my workday is done and my kids are asleep – where I want to stay up late and actually work on writing,” she said. “I want writing to feel like a journey where the work itself has become an adventure. That’s not to say it's all going to be fun because you hit conflicting ideas or hard things about yourself, reality, history, or your government when you write. But I think maybe we would allow ourselves to do better work if we weren’t always tied to a feeling that we have to produce something in order to be worth something.”

KATE SAMWORTH: ARTIST AND ILLUSTRATOR OF WHY FISH DON’T EXIST 藝術家凱特 • 薩姆沃斯: 《魚兒何故不存在》的插畫家 By Juliet Levesque, Morningside College Junior Fellow 李慧姿 晨興書院通識教育導師
Artist Kate Samworth’s work serves as a reminder that art can and should exist in spaces beyond sterile galleries, white walls, and be admired from distances closer than one meter. In a conversation on Zoom, she touched on isolation, a fashionable topic this year, noting that even in normal times, “to be an artist is to work in isolation.” Though a great deal of artwork is produced in solitude, completed artwork should not be fated to exist in isolation. Samworth’s illustrative work in Why Fish Don’t Exist exemplifies the value of submerging artwork in context. In the case of narrative stories, there is a reciprocal relationship in which context embellishes the art, and art embellishes the story. This is a delicate relationship, however, and Kate explained that “it’s up to artists to bring the illustrative interpretation and determine how to add to the text without repeating it.”

In the past 50 years, it has become common practice for galleries across the globe to adopt the white cube aesthetic, in which bleached walls labelled with ‘please do not touch’ vinyl stickers and costly lighting function as the setting into which artwork is transplanted. Such spaces present artwork without a past or present context and create both physical and psychological distance between the art and the spectator.

After a brief call with Kate, it became clear that both she and her art thrive in spaces outside and beyond the white cube. Her work is made to be reproduced in print for people to hold and consume with full control. She works in isolation, but that is not to say that she works without stimulation. She has spent a large sum of her life in nature, which is obvious in her artwork. Her advice for art students is: Keep pushing yourself to acquire new skills. Keep looking at the world. The approach to artmaking is different for everyone. Keep exploring, and always find the time even if it means you have to get up two hours before work in the morning. Kate’s initial art schooling was incompatible with her artistic vision. She explained that it was difficult for her to find a teacher that was willing to teach her the sort of skills she was looking for. She attributed this difficulty to the heavy influence of abstract expressionism on some of her early teachers: “The art school that I went to, The Corcoran, discouraged me from drawing. They kept telling me I was drawing too much. They just wanted us to paint dots because that’s what all of my teachers did. I ended up dropping out of that school because they weren’t really teaching me how to draw.”
For Kate, teaching has been a means to perpetuate the importance of drawing from observation. She currently teaches ‘Art of Natural History’ and ‘Drawing from Reference Materials’ at the Pennsylvania Fine Arts Academy. The involved methods in these courses, which focus on fundamental drawing skills that allow artists to achieve a likeness to life, are absent in Abstract Expressionism. Such techniques require a divergence from traditionally celebrated conventions like drawing from observation to produce lifelikeness, which has been a focal point for Samworth’s personal workspace (image provided by artist) Kate as both a student and educator.

Kate explained her relationship with Lulu Miller and their uncommon collaborative approach to the book: I met Lulu in Charlottesville maybe ten years ago. I was already interested in natural history and collectors, and studying taxonomy; that was fitting and that’s why she thought of me. It was exciting to work on a piece of nonfiction that was related to my other interests, and of course she’s such a pleasure to work with. Sometimes I’d be stumped on how to interpret the chapter because there’s some heavy material in there. It was hard to figure out how to maintain a sense of fairy-tale and the surreal in the art, and how to bring that to some of the darker parts of the story. We talked about ideas and that’s not usual. Usually, the artist and illustrator are kept apart by the publisher and not allowed to communicate, but since we were friends, they couldn’t stop us. It was a great experience and I really hope to work on another project with her. Why Fish Don’t Exist was Kate’s first official illustration project for an adult book, but she explained that, “my first book [Aviary Wonders, Inc] was a book about birds meant for artists, birdwatchers, and adults.” Kate possess an impressive ability to illustrate for both children and adults. She shared what she liked about illustrating for adults, “It’s more interesting to me to do highly detailed drawings, to let the subject matter be a bit dark, or a bit obtuse, and not let the point that you are trying to communicate be so obvious. I hope to do more books for adults and about nature. I also like inventing scenes and using surreal images and surreal combinations of figures and animals.” It was inspiring to listen to Kate share about how she navigated her own schooling to find the educational experiences that aligned with her own vision and values. It was even more inspiring to learn about the ways that she shares the fruit of those experiences to educate and entertain others. It was clear that her commitment to her priorities and vision have been long and strong. For aspiring artists, she left a few words of advice: The most important thing you can do to be an artist is to stay out of debt. You’ve got to have time to make your art. A lot of great artists get into a massive amount of debt in their 20s. Then they don’t have the time to make the art, end up taking a full time job and it becomes very hard to pursue art. Get used to doing without a lot of the luxuries; that’s the way you are able to make your art. Maybe that means you don’t have cable. If you really love art you’ll always find the time for it, and you’ll do without some of the creature comforts. Over the pandemic, Kate has enjoyed the ability to spend time working on Grand Isle, a children’s picture book that is set to be released this coming fall. She describes the wordless picture book as a “modern fairytale about a witch who communicates with animals.” To learn more about her work, visit Kate’s website: www.katesamworth.com.

The Start of Infinite Possibilities Graduation Speech by Joelle Li Class of 2020, Social Science
Vice-Chancellor, Master, Dean of Students, Parents, fellow graduates and guests, Good morning. I am Joelle Li, a graduate representative from the Department of Psychology. Now that a few months have passed since graduation, do you miss the days when you stayed in the pantry till late night just to revise for your midterm, the nights when you felt hungry and decided to go to the Women’s Cooperative or the CC canteen to grab some late night snacks, or the way you ran up the steep stairs outside the University Health Service in order to get to the Mong Man Wai Building on time? Do you miss your club committee friends who tried out all the games you designed for o-camp with you even when no one was backing you up? Do you miss your friends who complained about the quality of the communal dinners and made fun of it with you? Do you miss our dear Pilot and Captain, or do you recall your o-camp friend whom you always had dinner with when you first came to CU but drifted further and further apart from as time went by? A few months have passed since graduation. How have you been? During my second year at Morningside, I told a prospective CU student that Morningside College was “the place filled with infinite possibilities”. “Infinite possibilities”, who would ever use such naïve words? I did anyway. And now, thinking more carefully after I graduated, were there “infinite possibilities”? Back in my year 2, I signed up for the university exchange program. My grades weren’t bad, but I ranked one hundred something eventually in the application process. Ranking one hundred something meant that I wouldn’t be able to apply for the best schools in East Asia, not to mention those popular destinations in Europe or the U.S. Luckily, I secured a place in University College Utrecht, the Netherlands, thanks to the exchange program in Morningside. My year 2 was not a good one for me. It turned out that I was not as passionate about psychology as I had imagined and I had no idea what I could become in the future. To me, applying for an exchange almost meant applying for “a refuge from studies”. Yet who knew that such an “escape” would help me find out what I really liked and disliked? An excerpt from a speech I wrote during my days at University College Utrecht sums up my days of exchange, “If I had not had the opportunity to perceive Utrecht in both detached 23
and local ways, I wouldn’t have been amazed when I climbed up to the historical observatory. I wouldn’t have been aware that time literally flew as the giant cogwheel of the clock turned one second at a time. And it was just amazing to see people, the size of ants, enter my sight and leave.” That was the first time I had a correct view of myself, of how small my problems and I actually were. The opportunity Morningside has given me not only encouraged me to admit what I am interested in, but also “opened a window” for me. Finally recognizing the value of learning, I started to take psychology seriously after I went back to CU. I made sense of what was taught. And I actually started finding pleasure in it! At the same time, I was also determined to explore cultural subjects which I was better at, like anthropology and cultural management.
Another thing that Morningside gave me were ample opportunities. I am far from being a good student. Compared to many of you, I am certainly not an academic high achiever. However, this comfortable place taught me that the worst thing you can do is not to ask – asking is the key to new possibilities that you can never imagine. This precious opportunity to stand here and give my speech, for instance, originated from a parents’ night 5 years ago, when I volunteered to be the emcee of the event. Now that I have been the master of ceremonies of several college events, many kind-hearted teachers here have helped, nurtured and encouraged me along the way. The smallest potato can find its place here!
If the landscape of CU or the people we met and the things we came across in Morningside could turn into rich fertilizer, for how long might 4 or 5 years’ worth of memories support us? I have no answer to this. But I am certain about one thing: We have become better drivers – we are equipped to start our engines, know exactly where our accelerators are and are ready to start this long journey. We know that the choice to pause or make a turn is in our hands. I am sure I will find this car metaphor as naïve as the phrase “Morningside is filled with infinite possibilities” four or five years from now, but as a fresh graduate, it’s my privilege to stay naïve for a while. “Long has been my road and far the journey; I will search high and low to find my heart’s desire (Qu Yuan, BCE 278).” I hope we can successfully seek what we are looking for safely and joyfully.
Thank you all – and thank you to those who have accompanied us on this journey. 24

Holding Together Graduation Speech by Kevin Feng Class of 2020, Engineering
Vice-Chancellor, Master, Fellows, Professors, parents, fellow students, ladies and gentlemen:
The past 18 months have proved to be a particular challenge for us graduates, but we made it. Sometimes it is easy to disconnect from our past experience, so I invite you to stop for a while at this point and look over your shoulder: we haven’t had access to campus facilities for a long time – I know that I personally miss the sea view from my hostel room and the fragrance of books in the library – and more importantly, we face uncertainty about the future for ourselves and the world we live in. But despite that, we have met our academic and social obligations and are entitled to wear this gown today. I would like to invite all graduates to take a moment to reflect on how we addressed the adversity we went through.
I recall at this point one challenge I met during the past academic year: I have felt disconnected, both physically and mentally. I have felt that it is difficult to interact with my classmates and instructors – the Internet delay and construction noise across the street make learning different from the usual classroom experience. So what is holding us together at this point, when we do not have the physical boundary of lecture halls?
Back when we were residing at the college hostels, we all had private space, but we would go out and chat with each other at the pantry, or during communal dinners. We would share ideas because we considered them potentially helpful and inspiring to other students, or in other words, because they might be in the interest of the community. 25
I remember that when I was discussing the comments from other students on hostel issues with Professor Ann Huss, she remarked that Morningsiders have the responsibility to negotiate issues about the community independently. Looking back now, that was the start of my realizing my role as a participant in the community, in which I could have confidence in making a commitment and be recognized for the contribution, whether big or small, because I too could benefit from it: I enjoyed the accommodation, I learned from the discussions happening in the college, and I felt supported in general. So this is really a two-way relationship that we have trust in. Three years have passed since then, and we fresh graduates are facing a world of disengagement, disconnection, and distrust. Recent events have disassociated people from the community they previously belonged to. It is the time when we step out from the two hostel blocks and find that the outside is drastically different from the inside, that consensus may be more challenging to achieve than ever, that we feel anxious, confused and depressed. However, ultimately we need to collaborate on projects, large and small, similar to the course group projects we discussed at the bridge during final season. If we look at the mega projects in progress as a response to the pandemic, all of them are coordinated efforts from different minds, so it is the consensus on fighting the virus together for the well-being of all society that reconnects us across social separation. And I believe that the experience we gained from college life about critical thinking, constructive dialogue and empathy for community members will translate into actionable plans we can follow in the real world, plans that will guide us through the fog of disruption to build something great together.
Thank you for being with us today and throughout our time at Morningside. I wish everyone good health during and beyond the pandemic.

Exploring journalism in challenging times with Hannah Lucinda Smith On 11 November 2020, Morningside College hosted a Writers Series speaker event on Zoom with Ms. Hannah Lucinda Smith, author of Erdogan Rising: The Battle for the Soul of Turkey (2019). Smith is a correspondent for The Times (London) based in Istanbul covering Turkey and the Balkans. Erdogan Rising examines the rise of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, offering a closer look at Turkey’s recent politics and the broader implications for Europe. Smith talked to Morningside students about her experience as a reporter based in Turkey, her views on journalism in an increasingly authoritarian world, and her suggestions on how to think critically about the information we see on the Internet. This event was co-organised with the Hong Kong International Literary Festival. 27

Class of 2020 graduates attend virtual graduation ceremony
On 19 November 2020, The Chinese University of Hong Kong broadcast the 88th Congregation for the conferment of bachelor’s degrees and the 8th Morningside College Graduation Ceremony. Master Nick Rawlins with our Presiding Officer and Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Rocky Tuan, celebrated the achievements of 80 graduating Morningsiders. Graduates Joelle Li (Psychology) and Kevin Feng (Information Engineering) addressed the audience. The Master reflected on the enduring commitment of our students during extraordinary times: “What a final year you have all had! Profound social unrest was quickly followed by waves of COVID-19. Classes were suspended; the College had to close and is yet to re-open fully; online teaching, followed by online examinations, became the norm; our
community has dispersed and is distributed across the globe. Yet I see this very clearly as a year to remember, rather than as a year to try to forget. Morningside’s spirit — its kindness and cohesion, its enthusiasms and bubbling curiosity, and its thoughtful support for all its members — came through all this, and is as present as ever. You rose to all the challenges rather than being brought low by them. That undaunted spirit will be a lasting part of the mark you will make upon the world.” Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

Morningsiders present at Virtual Global COVID Symposium 晨興學生於新型冠狀病毒網上研討會發表簡報 Morningsiders Hayley Feng, Emilie Fu, Josephine Gracio (pictured below), Marta Gramatyka, Goran Shiao, and Natalie Woo presented at the Global COVID Symposium hosted by Connecticut College on 1 April 2021. Over the past several months, these Morningsiders worked virtually with students from institutions around the globe on collaborative research projects. The partnering institutions included Ashesi University in Ghana, Ashoka University in India, Connecticut College in the United States, and Higher School of Economics in Russia. First-year student Goran Shiao, whose research focus was activism, commented, “It is crucial for us to acknowledge our cultural limitations which restrain us from gaining a better understanding of another country with a distinct sociohistorical context. I truly enjoyed the intercultural experience brought by this project; it allowed me to transcend my cultural boundaries by listening to the perspectives of participants from other parts of the globe.” Marta Gramatyka, whose research focus was inequality, explained that she chose to take part in the project because “being able to expand my horizons, challenge my perspectives and learn to understand previously unexplored parts of the world is the best education!”
