Morningside College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in 2006 with generous donations from the Morningside Foundation and Morningside Education Foundation Limited for the purpose of accommodating 300 students on a fully residential and communal dining basis.

The Morningside College Master’s Report is published annually and is circulated to all members of the University and College communities. MASTER'S MESSAGE 院長致辭 In the College and University, the new academic year has just begun, and we look back on the previous year. The College has changed little in that time. But we see our students maturing rapidly. Physically, the noticeable change is the appearance of bench seats on the podium, where people can sit to enjoy a rest, the view, or a good conversation. They are not much used yet, particularly in such a hot summer, but we expect people to learn they are there. Probably visitors from outside will use them most. We do not see our students or senior members resting much, if at all.

I am particularly grateful for the great efforts of the College staff, the Dean of College, Professor Graham, the Associate Master and Dean of General Education, Professor Huss, the College secretary, Ms Dora Dai, and the other office staff, the Junior Fellows, the P.E. lecturers associated with the College, the caretakers and maintenance staff, and the resident tutors, as well as the substantial contributions to college business of the Fellows and other senior members.

They do what is needed, and so much more: they create the life of the College.

The intensity of student life is well demonstrated by the Master’s List below. A student is placed on the list if she or he has a grade-point average of 3.5 or more. That is a good performance: most people have to work well and hard to achieve it. It is notable that so high a proportion of our students achieve it. They are to be congratulated, and will in due course be rewarded by worthwhile job opportunities.

Students have also been much involved in various kinds of service projects, in Hong Kong, and in many other parts of the world. The report tells you something about these ventures, adventures and achievements. I congratulate them for what they have done.

As a small college, we cannot expect much success in sporting competition with the other colleges in the University. That has not deterred our students.

They have formed teams in a number of sports, with notable successes over the years in rowing. For what it is worth, they look a fit and healthy body of students at college dinners, particularly when rushing for second helpings. And they generally look as though they are enjoying themselves. Argument appears vigorous and friendly. Surely they are not always in agreement. I would love to know how often they change their minds for good reason. Sometimes, I hope; but not, surely, because they are told what to believe. As I talk with our students, I find the present generation notably polite and pleasant, but unwilling to bow to authority. Good for them.

適逢大學和書院新學年伊始，讓我們一同回顧去年點 滴：書院雖與彼時變化無幾，但卻見證學生的瞬間成 長。設施方面，大家也許察覺到書院平台增設了長 椅，供人們休憩、細賞風景、好好聊天。使用長椅的 人不多，特別是在炎炎夏日。或許外間訪客較多使用 它們，而書院學生和院務委員因日常學務繁重，相信 無暇在那閒坐稍事休息吧。 我尤其感謝書院仝人的付出，包括輔導長簡家廉教 授、協理院長兼通識教育主任何素楠教授、院務主任 戴佩華女士與其他辦公室職員、通識教育導師、附屬 本院的體育部講師、各管理員、支援員工及宿舍導 師，並感激各院務委員和成員對院務的重大貢獻。他 們的貢獻往往超出我們的期望—他們創造了書院的 點滴。

辛勞的付出帶來纍纍碩果，為此我衷心恭賀他們。 作為一個小型書院，與其他大學書院在體育上切磋， 從不抱太大期望，但這並不表示我們的學生會因此而 卻步。他們組織了多個運動隊伍，其中划艇隊歷年 成績卓著。儘管如此，我們在書院共膳時均見學生身 手敏捷，尤其當他們大快朵頤仍要添吃時。亦常見他 們像是很樂在其中那樣子。學生在辯論時儘管舌戰唇 槍，仍不傷和睦友好，當然他們不會常常達致相互共 識。我很想知道他們在辨論過程中有多常會有所啟發 而改變想法。有時我希望—但我不肯定—他們改 變想法絕不是為了盲從他人的信念。在我和學生的言 談之間，我發覺這一代人特別謙謙有禮、從容可親， 面對權威亦不卑不亢，相當不錯。

後頁的院長榮譽狀名單是學生努力的最佳證明。只有 全年取得平均學分3.5或以上的學生，才可躋身名單， 表現何其超卓。大部份學生須勤奮努力，方可取得此 榮譽。書院裏能夠有這麼多學生獲得榮譽狀，實非易 事。學生成績優異當然可喜可賀，他們亦因此適時找 到合適工作。

JESSICA CHU (LAWS), DINNER FOR FAMILIES OF THE CLASS OF 2017, 12 APRIL 2017 Morningside College final-year Laws student JESSICA CHU encouraged her classmates during a recent address in April of this year to take advantage of the many opportunities available at Morningside, especially those provided during Communal Dinners.

Most nights, students gather with friends old and new to share meals and chat about the day’s events. On a few evenings scattered throughout the year, however, students and Fellows are treated to specially arranged talks by visitors to the College; four such talks were organized in 2016-17. Details below.

CRAIG LEESON (P.7, top photo, left), award-winning journalist and director of the adventure documentary A Plastic Ocean, spoke at the first Formal Hall Dinner of the academic year on 20 September 2016. Leeson, who was joined by College Overseer and Executive Producer of the feature-length documentary, DANIEL AUERBACH (P.7, top photo, centre), introduced the story behind the filming of A Plastic Ocean. A screening of the film was held for students

in College the next evening.

In December, University of Hong Kong Sociology Professor TOM MCDONALD (P.7, middle photo) spoke with students about his recent project “Social Media and the Stranger in Rural China”. His book on the topic, recently published by UCL Press, was the culmination of over a year’s worth of ethnographic fieldwork examining social media use in the Chinese countryside.

A changing China was once again the topic of discussion at the first Formal Hall dinner of the second term when we welcomed staff writer for The New Yorker, MacArthur Fellow, and prize-winning author of River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze, PETER HESSLER (photo below, left). During a dinner talked entitled “Return to River Town”, Peter detailed how twenty years – and the Three Gorges Dam – had changed the Sichuan town where he first taught as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1996 to 1998. Later in the week, the topic moved from China to Egypt when

Hessler delivered a public lecture on the experiences of Chinese entrepreneurs in Egypt. Hessler spent several years in Cairo covering the Middle East for The New Yorker.

The year came to a close on 20 April with a visit from the Chairman of the Hong Kong Commission on Youth, Mr. LAU MING WAI (photo, bottom), who spoke on youth development in Hong Kong. A week earlier, graduands Jessica Chu (quoted on P.6) and

LAUREL JIAO addressed Fellows, students and families. Laurel remembered when she first arrived at the College she heard Dr. GERALD CHAN speak of his hope that Morningside would grow into an intellectual community. She confirmed that Dr. Chan’s hope had been realized during her years at the College, and she was especially proud to have been part of that process. The College is grateful for the leadership and commitment to community shown by its Fellows and students.

2016年9月20日，獲獎記者兼探險紀錄片《怒海控 塑》之導演CRAIG LEESON(右圖，左)於本學 年 的 首 次 高 桌 晚 宴 中 演 講 。 Lee so n 在 書 院 院 監 會 成員兼紀錄片的執行監製歐柏德(右圖，正中) 陪同下，闡述了拍攝《怒海控塑》一片背後的 故事。翌日晚上書院舉行了一場該片的放映會，備受同學 歡迎。 香港大學社會學系 TOM MCDONALD(右圖)教授於12月 到訪書院，以其近期之研究項目「社交媒體與中國鄉郊 的異鄉人」為題發表演說。McDonald以逾一年時間進 行實地考察，探討中國鄉郊地區使用社交媒體的情況， 並把研究成果撰寫成書。該書最近由UCL出版社發行。 下學期的首次高桌晚宴，再次以蛻變中的中國為討論焦 點。雜誌《紐約人》之專職作者、麥克阿瑟獎得主、得 獎文學《消失中的江城》作者何偉(左頁，左)以「回到 江城」為題的演說中，提及他由1996至1998年到四川 涪陵首次為和平隊擔任志願教師期間，見證了20年的 歲月沖刷和三峽大壩之落成如何改變了這個四川小城。 數天後，何偉把話題由中國轉到埃及去，其公開講座 以他居於開羅為《紐約人》出任中東記者數年間所見 所聞為主題，講述中國企業家在埃及的經歷。 接近學年終結，書院的壓軸活動乃為香港青年事務委員 會主席劉鳴煒(右圖)先生於4月20日的晚宴時與同學分享 香港青年事務的發展。另應屆畢業生朱雅頤(如上述)與 焦睿馨於講座的一星期前分別向院務委員、學生及家長 致辭。於典禮上，睿馨講述她初入書院時，聽聞陳樂宗 博士期望晨興書院能夠成為一個知識群體；四年大學生 涯裏，她可以肯定的說陳博士得遂所願，她亦為自己成 為這歷程的一份子感到驕傲。書院感謝各院務委員和學 生對此知識社群所作出的領導與承擔。

晨興書院法律系應屆畢業生朱雅頤在今年4月的畢業致 辭中，鼓勵同學抓緊書院所提供的各種機會，特別是 共膳帶來的得著。許多個晚上，學生與新舊好友聚首一 堂共享肴饌、談論當天發生的點滴小事。年內書院會 特別安排數場的晚宴講座，由訪問書院的學者或嘉賓 主講，與學生及院務委員分享其真知灼見。於2016至 17年度，書院共舉辦了四場講座。詳情如下：

ADMISSIONS 新生概覽 College Fellows interviewed over 300 applicants in 2016. 73 students (23% of those interviewed) were admitted. JUPAS, Non-JUPAS and Mainland intake remained stable; international student intake increased by 16%.

MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE 晨興書院

Minor differences were noted in student intake by Faculty when compared to 2015 intake statistics: Law and Medicine intake increased by 4% each and Business Administration majors decreased by 6%.

HK$2.1m in Scholarships and Financial Aid were awarded to deserving Morningsiders this year, $200,000 less than the amount awarded in 2015-16.

A 5% increase in Scholarships and Financial Aid for Exchange Programmes is worth noting, as is the increase in the number of students going on exchange. Details on page 13.

2016年書院院務委員甄選超過300名學生，最終取錄了 73人(佔面試總人數的百分之二十三)。大學聯招、非 聯招以及內地學生人數與往年相若，而海外新生的取 錄人數則增加百分之十六。

以新生所屬學院而言，收生比例跟2015年略有不同： 法律學院和醫學院新生人數比例分別增加百分之四， 而工商管理學院學生人數比例則減少百分之六。 本年度書院合共提供210萬港元的獎學金及資助予合資 格學生以作嘉許，比2015至16年度減少20萬元。值得 注意的是，隨著前往海外交流之人數增加，交流生計 劃的獎學金及資助額亦相應增長了百分之五。詳情請 參閱第13頁。

STUDENT LIFE 書院生活

Morningside College’s Student Union, led by President TIFFANY CHAN (Year 2, Medicine) during Term 1, represented students on College Committees and advocated on their behalf. In Spring 2016, students elected new Executive and Representative Councils, with ISABELLA KO (Year 1, Medicine) as the new Student Union President. Isabella and her team are hard at work as we write, preparing to welcome the incoming first-year students during Orientation Camp in August 2017.

Cultural activities remained central to student life this year. Students kicked off the new academic year with a college barbeque, followed by a Wine Tasting Workshop led by a Master Sommelier. The College’s first musical group, the Morningside Band, practiced diligently throughout the first semester in preparation for performances at Music Night and Formal Hall in the Spring. Band members included AMBROSE CHAN (keyboard), LF CHUNG (percussion), ELOISA DAMULO (vocals), AYUSH PUNN (guitar), OWEN QI (guitar), STANLEY WONG (vocals), and exchange student SHUNZO HAYASHI (base).

The annual photography competition was judged this year by professional photographer ROMAIN JACQUET-LAGRÈZE and College Fellows Professor NELSON CHEN, Director of the School of Architecture, and Professor of Communication SASKIA WITTEBORN. Themes were Disappearance, Resistance and Threads. For the first time, a Morningsider, NIGEL PAK (Year 2, Medicine) was awarded the Grand Prize. The winning photo was entitled “Alternative Facts”. As usual, submissions by Morningside students will be showcased in the 2018 Morningside College Calendar.

On 12 April 2017, families of the Class of 2017 joined the Master, Fellows, and students at an awards ceremony held during communal dinner.

Achievement, Service, Spirit and Academic Achievement Awards were presented. PAUL LEE and JAMIE WONG (both Medicine students) received Achievement Awards. Spirit Awards were presented to ELOISA DAMULO (Integrated BBA), SHUBHROPARNO HALDER (Electronic Engineering), JOELLE LI (Psychology) and EDNA TOH (Laws).

晨 興 書 院 學 生 會 於 上 學 期 在 主 席 陳正 思 ( 醫 學 二 年 級)的領導下，代表學生參與書院各委員會事務。在 2016年春季，學生選出了新一屆學生會幹事會及代表 會，並由高睿羲(醫學一年級)擔任新一屆學生會主 席。睿羲與其團隊正如火如荼地展開工作，準備於 2017年8月的迎新營迎接應屆的一年級生。 今年文化活動仍是書院生活的焦點。學生以書院一年 一度的燒烤聚會為新學年打響頭炮，隨後參與大師級 侍酒師所主持的品酒工作坊。書院的首支樂隊「晨興 樂隊」於上學期為音樂之夜及春季高桌晚宴之演出 努力排練。樂隊成員包括：陳彥綸(鍵盤手)、鍾靈鋒 (鼓手)、ELOISA DAMULO(主音)、AY U S H P UNN (結他手)、齊楚秦(結他手)、黃思浩(主音)及交換生 SHUNZO HAYASHI(低音結他手)。 本 年 度 的 書 院 攝 影 比 賽 由 專 業 攝 影 師 R O M A I N J A C Q U E T- L A G R È Z E 及兩位書院院務委 員—建築學院院長陳丙驊教授及傳播系賽詩雅教授 擔任評審，主題為「消失」 、 「抵抗」與「線索」 。比賽 總冠軍首次由晨興學生奪得，白昊天(醫學二年級)以題 為「另類事實」一照奪魁。一如既往，晨興學生的參賽 作品將刊載於2018年晨興書院月曆。

GENERAL EDUCATION Two College General Education courses were offered as usual in 2016-17. Seventy first-year students successfully completed GEMC1001 (Current Dilemmas and Their Histories); sixty-eight students enrolled in the Service Learning course (GEMC3001).

Both courses are supervised by the Dean of General Education, ANN HUSS. Tutorial instruction was provided by Morningside’s Junior Fellows RASHON CLARK (University of Pennsylvania, MA, 2011), PAULINE DAY (Wellesley College, BA, 2016), and NATHAN FABER (University of Washington, BA, 2015).

The Writers Series continued into its fifth year with visits from award-winning political cartoonist LARRY FEIGN and New York Times Notable Book Award winner TOM LUTZ. Students ventured off campus with the Junior Fellows to listen to Buddhist Chants, see the Broadway play Wicked, and enjoy various concerts throughout the year. The Junior Fellows also coordinated the weekly Film Club on Wednesday evenings for those who needed a break from studying.

This year’s David Parker General Education Best Essay Prize was awarded to LUKE YAN (Laws) for, as the competition judge Professor SIMON HAINES commented, “a fine piece of work on the dilemmas presented by the Hong Kong housing situation.” Two other Morningsiders were celebrated for their work in the University's General Education Programme "In Dialogue with Nature": CAROL MA (Science) received both the silver award for her course essay and the "Best Presentation Award", and ARYA YUAN (Quantitative Finance) received the bronze award.

Meanwhile, the College welcomed 38 incoming exchange students from 14 countries.

Five students – KEN CHENG (Computer Science), TRIVORAMAI JIRALERSPONG (Biomedical Engineering), ANSON MA (Cultural Management), SEAN O’REILLY (Laws), and KATIE PENG (Medicine) – spent a week at Princeton University in late September 2016 on the College’s short-term

exchange programme with Whitman College. Five Whitman students visited Hong Kong in March 2017: NICHOLAS JOHNSON, ASIA MATTHEWS, ABIGAIL SPARE, SAM VALLE, and CATHERINE WANG. The group completed a heritage tour of Hong Kong, visited Lantau, volunteered at a food bank, and attended a Chinese Orchestra performance. Unfortunately, several students came down with food poisoning during the visit. We hope, however, that the Whitman students still managed to depart with fond memories of their time in Hong Kong.

MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE 晨興書院

Over seventy Morningside students completed service learning projects as part of the College’s General Education program in 2016-17. They dedicated over 2500 hours of service work, with international projects in countries such as Vietnam, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka; and a great diversity of local projects: sex education workshops in schools, academic mentorship for ethnic minorities, and service work for the prevention of animal cruelty.

The College organized three service learning trips.

This May, 13 Morningside students participated in the College’s first service trip to Rabat, Morocco.

Students served at a youth center run by a small NGO in Salé, a low-income sister city of Rabat. The service included both a mural project and cultural exchange activities with youth center visitors. The next project sent 14 Morningsiders to a rural village in Shaoguan, Guangdong, where they renovated, stocked and opened a library for local children. Part of the project involved visiting nearby villages where Morningsiders had previously opened libraries and interviewing village leaders about its use and possible improvements. Finally, 12 students visited The University of York for two weeks, engaging with local non-profit organizations ranging from a

rehabilitative women’s prison to a food bank. During their trip, students studied the context of service and poverty in the United Kingdom.

MICHELLE TSUI and JOSEPH ZHAO received the Morningside College Service Award for the 2016-17 academic year. Michelle served as a translator for Mother’s Choice and conducted public health and first-aid training during a service trip to Nepal. She has also volunteered for her university community, serving as an organizing committee member for CUHK’s Med Start, and as a volunteer for Orientation Day. Joseph served meals at a homeless shelter during his student exchange in Montreal, taught high school students in rural Henan, and was a research and planning officer for Morningside’s Garden Project.

Additionally, PAUL LEE, Year 4 Medicine student, received the Hong Kong Youth Service Award for his initiative “Embrace with Empathy”. This public health initiative provided services ranging from free health check-ups to public talks in popular urban areas, such as shopping malls. With the help of his peers, Paul’s team has been able to reach over 13,000 people.

Morningside’s Physical Education Lecturers TANG TSZ MING and ZOIE LAU organized a number of Fun Day activities for students this year, in addition to arranging excellent coaching for the College’s teams. The Women’s Rowing and Tennis teams did particularly well in 2017: the Women’s 4+ rowing team took 1st runner-up at the 13th Chinese University of Hong Kong Rowing Championships, and in March, the women’s tennis team finished 2nd runner-up in the College Tennis Competition. Congratulations to our athletes – and thanks to Mr. Tang and Ms. Lau.

The room is named in honor of Professor Leung’s parents Mr. Leung Siu Kai and Mrs. Leung Pon You Fung.

Income rose from $2.8m in 2015-16 to $16.6m in 2016-17, an increase of $13.8m. 72% of this increase was due to an interest and investment return of $9.9m, a positive development after last year’s loss of $1.6m. Donations also grew from $0.6m to $2.7m.

Here a particular note of thanks is due to Professor Lawrence J. Lau and Professor Jesús Seade, Cochairmen of the Fundraising Committee for the James A. Mirrlees Postgraduate Scholarship, for their commitment to raising funds to endow this important scholarship in honor of the Founding Master. The College is also grateful for the continued support of the Morningside Education Foundation Ltd.

Expenditure increased slightly (2.7%) over the past year, from $11m to $11.3m. An increase of $0.7m in expenditure for College Operation was offset, however, by a decrease in funds allocated for scholarships and financial aid, General Education and exchange programmes, college life activities, and the Distinguished Visitor Programme.

The College’s primary objective when managing capital remains the same as in years past: to safeguard the College’s ability to continue as a going concern and to maintain a strong financial base to support the development of the College. To this end, the College invested in financial instruments which include funds held by the University that are managed in accordance with relevant financial management policies and practices.

Due to the steadily improving investment climate for 2016-17, endowed funds recorded an increase of $6.8m. With income of $16.6m and expenditure of $11.3m, total funds increased from $117.1m to $122.5m, representing a net increase in fund balance of $5.4m, or 4.6%.

THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE

Throughout his tenure as Master, Professor Mirrlees has spoken often of the importance of creativity and the value of learning new things. As the College enters its second decade, greater thought will be given to the creation of in-college programmes that prepare Morningside students for postgraduate study and research, and scholarships (such as the James A. Mirrlees Scholarship) that explicitly support these pursuits. In the short term the College will concentrate on raising funds for this purpose specifically – and to support College operations generally – while continuing to take a prudent approach to finances in light of the unstable investment climate.

The Assembly of Fellows is constituted and regulated 院務委員會乃依照「香港中文大學條例 」規程16的2B in accordance with the Ordinance (Statute 16, 2B), the 條組成並受其監管，而校長則具最終權力執行有關條 terms of which are enforceable ultimately by the Vice 文。院務委員會可自行任命其成員。 Chancellor. The Assembly of Fellows is self-appointing.

DUTIES

職責

The Assembly of Fellows sets the strategic direction of the College and regulates its administration and the management of its finances. It meets regularly under the chairmanship of the Master and is advised by its Committees.

院務委員會負責制訂書院的策略性路向、監管書院的 行政及管理財務，並會定期舉行會議。院務委員會由 書院院長擔任主席，下設多個委員會提供諮詢意見。

The Assembly of Fellows assists the Master with:

(1) arranging tutorial instruction, pastoral counseling and other forms of education; (2) the provision and supervision of residential accommodation for students at the College; and (3) the maintenance of discipline within the College.

The Assembly of Fellows normally meets three times a year. Committees of the Assembly of Fellows develop policies for approval by the full Assembly of Fellows and subsequently monitor their implementation. The duties and membership of the Committees are described in detail in the Terms of Reference for each Committee, kept on record by the College Secretary.
