Morningside College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in 2006 with generous donations from the Morningside Foundation and Morningside Education Foundation Limited for the purpose of accommodating 300 students on a fully residential and communal dining basis. The Morningside College Master’s Report is published annually and is circulated to all members of the University and College communities. MASTER’S MESSAGE 院長致辭

Professor Nicholas Rawlins 汪寧笙教授 It is a particular pleasure for me to write this, my first Master’s Report, and to welcome all our newly arriving students, our new Junior Fellows, and our returning students to the start of the academic year. I know that the newcomers will already have been greeted and made to feel at home at Morningside, just as Lalla and I were when we arrived last December. This welcoming spirit even extends to the senior dog who has generously shared with two very much smaller interlopers the space and attention that were formerly his alone, despite finding that his treats get shared out as well. I am equally confident that returning students will experience a feeling of coming home. The location and its views, and the people who work, study and live here, all combine to make Morningside a place that feels like home, as it already does to Lalla and me. The best universities constantly evolve yet still retain their souls; and so, of course, do the best colleges. Morningsiders owe a great debt of gratitude to all those who provided the foundations for the place that we have inherited but who then stepped aside leaving us to carry on. First and foremost are our Founding Master, Professor Sir James Mirrlees who with Lady Mirrlees did so much to establish Morningside’s genius loci, and the Committee of Overseers who supported them. Daniel Auerbach, Leonie Ki, Anthony Neoh, Jesús Seade, and Alex K. Yasumoto have demitted their roles, but their memorial remains. It is all around us, and the College is immensely grateful to them all. Gerald Chan and James Lin have remained on the Committee and are joined by Adriel Chan, Sebastian Man and Professor Nelson Chen, who retired from CUHK and Morningside College this summer but has taken on this new connection to the College: I salute them all and very much look forward to working together. Professor Chris Gane also retires this summer. He had been the Acting Master for almost a year before my arrival. The College could not have been in wiser hands and I could not have had better counsel as I learned my way around. He and the team who worked with him – particularly Professors Ann Huss and Colin Graham, and the College Secretary Dora Dai – looked after the College and its interests in an exemplary

fashion and discreetly, but nonetheless effectively, smoothed my path. I am deeply grateful to them all. They, along with the wider Fellowship and College membership – both students and staff – make this the special place that it is. The year gone by had its difficulties, but Morningside thrived despite them. Just cast an eye over the photographs, or the reports from the service trips, or the reports on exchanges and the College’s inimitable General Education courses, or University prizes and the Master’s List and you can see that. You can also sense, and instantly feel when you meet our students, the life-changing power and values of the best education. They can think for themselves, seek out and assimilate new information, and resolve issues creatively and

fairly. They have learned how to set their imaginations free yet still remember they can be wrong. The coming year will clearly have its own distinctive issues. When times are difficult, and opinions are divided, it can be hard to remain constructive while being critical, or supportive and respectful while being challenged (or when challenging). But societies need to remain cohesive despite – actually, because of – a diversity of backgrounds and outlooks, and colleges are just the kinds of societies that do this best; indeed, they can act as models for other institutions. Education matters more than ever; communication matters more than ever; that’s why we’re all here. I look forward to a great year for you all, and another great year for Morningside College. I’m very happy to be sharing it with you.

很高興能夠在新學期開始時為我首份報告撰辭，並歡迎所有加入晨興的新生、通識導師，還有在暑假後重返校園的學生。我知道新加入的學生和導師，跟我和 Lalla 去年 12 月來到晨興的時候一樣，都受到熱情招待。住在晨興的人和狗同樣熱情；即使零食被瓜分了，牠仍然慷慨地跟兩隻「不速之狗」分享本來可以獨享的地盤和別人的關注。我深信回校的晨興人同樣會感到像回家一樣。這裏的位置、景觀，在這裏工作、學習和居住的人，令人感到在晨興猶如在家一般，而我和Lalla 正有同感。最優秀的大學跟最優秀的書院一樣，既要不斷進化，又要保留其獨有的特質。對於那些在書院發展初期貢獻心力、功成身退的眾多賢能之士，晨興上下無不心存感激。首先，是我們的創院院長莫理斯爵士，他與夫人為奠立晨興的精神貢獻良多；協助他們的院監會成員也功不可沒：已退任的 Daniel Auerbach、紀文鳳、梁定邦、施雅德、康本健守，作出的貢獻讓書院上下永誌不忘。陳樂宗和林振宇繼續留任院監會，陳文博、文肇偉，以及於今夏離開中文大學和晨興、續以另一身份支持書院的陳丙驊教授，則加入成為院監會成員。我向他們致敬，並熱切期待與他們合作無間。

京柏年教授也於今夏退休。在我上任前，他擔任署理院長近一年。他是出任此職的不二人選；在我仍然感到人地生疏時，他大力幫助。他和晨興的團隊 — 尤其是何素楠教授、簡家廉教授，還有院務主任戴佩華女士，專業盡心、各司其職，有效管理書院，維護書院權益，使我往後的工作更順利。我由衷感激他們各人。他們與院務委員及書院的學生和員工，使這個地方變得與別不同。過去一年不無挑戰，然而書院迎難而上，繼續茁壯成長。只要看一下後頁的文字、看一下社會服務團和海外交流的報告、書院獨特的通識教育課程，或所獲的大學獎項和院長榮譽狀名單，就可見一斑。當你有機會跟我們的學生相處，就會立刻感到優良教育改變人生的那種強大力量及重要價值。我們的學生慎思明辨，勇於探求新知，能以具創意而恰當的方法解決問題。他們學會放膽想像，小心求證。明顯地，來年將會面對前所未見的問題。在艱難之時，在意見分歧之際，要在受到批評時保持積極，或是在受到挑戰（或挑戰別人）時保持尊重，著實不易。即使大家背景和觀點不同，社會仍要保持團結，而書院正是能好好做到這點的一個群體，甚至能成為其他機構的模範。教育空前重要；溝通空前重要；這就是我們共聚於此的原因。我祝願你們都有精彩美好的一年，也祝願晨興有更多姿多彩的一年。我會樂於與你們分享其中點滴。

THE COLLEGE

The College continued to nurture interesting conversations in 2018-2019. Professor ROSSA CHIU helped us kick off the year with a Formal Hall Dinner talk during which she explained how her team’s ground breaking research on non-invasive prenatal testing was confronted by a critical patent dispute. Later in the term, SUKI KIM, author of Without You, There Is No Us: My secret life teaching the sons of North Korea’s elite, was the star of the College’s inaugural “One Book Programme”. The only writer to have lived undercover in North Korea for immersive journalism, Kim spoke of the difficulties of uncovering the truth on North Korea, which she described as a “cultural Galapagos”.

書院簡介

One of Professor CHRISTOPHER GANE’s final duties as Acting Master was to preside over a graduation celebration for the Class of 2018 in November. Weeks later, the college community welcomed Professor SIR MICHAEL MARMOT, director of the University College London Institute for Health Equity to the final Formal Hall dinner of the term. Sir Michael gave a talk entitled “The Health Gap: the challenge of an unequal world”. In the new year, Morningside welcomed its incoming Master, Professor NICK RAWLINS and his partner, The Honorable LALLA WARD, to campus. They quickly jumped into life at the College, hosting the Vice-Chancellor for conversations with fellows and students, attending weekly communal dinners, officiating at college ceremonies, and holding a variety of activities in the Master’s Lodge.

書院於 2018-2019 年度繼續提供多個機會促進有趣的交流討論。趙慧君教授在學期初首次高桌晚宴上擔任演講嘉賓，解釋其研究團隊在「無創性胎兒染色體篩查」的突破性研究成果所面對的專利糾紛問題。學期中，《沒有您，就沒有我們》作者金淑姬擔任書院首次舉辦的「賞書活動」講座嘉賓。她是唯一曾以秘密記者身份在北韓生活的作家。在講座上，她講述揭露北韓真相的困難，並形容當地為「文化加拉巴哥」。

京柏年教授以署理院長身份執行的最後一項院務，是為 11 月舉行的 2018 年度畢業典禮擔任主禮人。典禮後數星期，學期內最後一次高桌晚宴邀得倫敦大學學院健康公平學院院長 MICHAEL MARMOT教授，發表題為「健康鴻溝：來自不平等世界的挑戰」的演說。新年伊始，書院迎來新任院長汪寧笙教授及其伴侶 LALLA WARD 女士。他們隨即投入書院生活，主持院務委員和學生與校長面談的環節、出席書院共膳活動、主持書院的典禮，以及在院長宿舍舉辦各類型活動。

新生概覽

College Fellows interviewed close to 300 applicants in 2018. 80 students were admitted. International intake increased while local Hong Kong intake decreased slightly. Mainland intake remained stable with only a 1% variance. Several differences were noted in student intake by Faculty when compared to 2017 intake statistics: Engineering intake almost doubled, while Law student numbers were cut in half. Business and Medicine intake decreased slightly; social science and science faculty intake increased by 3% and 5% respectively. The College maintained its commitment to ensuring that all students have access to the various opportunities that the College and the University provide. HK$1.79m in Scholarships and Financial Aid were awarded to deserving Morningsiders this year.

2018 年書院院務委員甄選接近 300 名學生，取錄了 80 人。國際學生人數增加，本地學生人數有所減少，而中國內地學生人數則保持穩定，相差只有百分之一。以新生所屬學院而言，收生比例跟 2017 年有所不同：工程學院人數增加接近一倍；法律學院人數則減半。工商管理學院及醫學院收生人數稍微下降；社會科學院及理學院分別增加百分之三及百分之五。書院保持讓所有學生都能獲得書院和大學提供的多種機會。今年，書院提供合共 179 萬港元的獎學金及資助予合資格學生。

STUDENT LIFE

Morningside College’s Student Union, led by President NORTON LEUNG (Sociology) during Term 1, represented students on College Committees and advocated on their behalf. In Spring 2019, students elected new Executive and Representative Councils, with CHRISTIE LEUNG (Laws) as the new Student Union President. Christie and her team are now preparing to welcome the incoming first-year students during Orientation Camp in August 2019. Cultural activities remained central to student life this year. The College held several student-led Music Nights to showcase the musical talent of Morningsiders. The annual photography competition received over two hundred submissions from students at all nine colleges. This year’s jurors were Professor NELSON CHEN, Director of the School of Architecture, and LALLA WARD, noted artist, actor, and author. Themes were Border, Currency and Shelter. The Nelson Chen Architectural Photography Prize, which recognizes photography that

creatively captures an architectural structure’s design and features, was awarded for the first time to S.H. Ho student PHILIP FAN. The prize recognizes Professor Chen’s service as a thoughtful judge for the photography competition over the years. To better prepare students for life outside Morningside, the College sponsored résumé, interview and entrepreneurship workshops during the spring term. We also recognized the hard work and energy of our students during Formal Hall dinner on 18 April. Spirit Awards were presented to SEYRENCE LEE (Insurance, Finance & Actuarial Analysis), EUGENE MOK (IBBA), DANIEL NG (Insurance, Finance & Actuarial Analysis) and RAKULAN SOTHINATHAN (Systems Engineering & Engineering Management). FREDERICK LO (Cell & Molecular Biology), NIDHAL MAZZA (Psychology) and JACKY YIP (Physics) received Achievement Awards. Service Awards are detailed on page 14.

晨興書院學生會於上學期在主席梁朗天（社會學）的領導下，代表學生參與書院各委員會事務。在 2019 年春季，學生選出了新一屆學生會幹事會及代表會，並由梁婧珩（法學士）擔任新一屆學生會主席。婧珩與其團隊正如火如荼地展開工作，準備於2019年8月的迎新營迎接應屆的一年級生。今年文化活動仍是書院生活的焦點。書院數度舉辦由學生主導的音樂之夜，展示晨興人的音樂才華。一年一度的攝影比賽共收到來自九間書院的學生共二百多件作品。本年度的比賽由建築學院院長陳丙驊教授及藝術家、演員兼作家 LALLA WARD 擔任評審，主題為「邊界」、「貨幣」與「庇護」。今年新設的「陳丙驊建築攝影獎」由善衡書院學生范嘉傑奪得。該獎項旨為鳴謝陳教授多年來擔任比賽評審，勞苦功高。

為協助學生畢業後踏入社會，書院在春季贊助舉行有關履歷表撰寫、面試、創業認知的工作坊。在 4 月 18 日舉行的高桌晚宴上，書院亦表揚了多位積極努力，充滿幹勁的學生。李勁輝（保險、金融與精算學）、睦裕鎮（工商管理學士綜合課程）、吳孝銓（保險、金融與精算學）及 RAKULAN SOTHINATHAN（系統工程與工程管理學）獲頒傑出貢獻獎。盧澔陞（細胞及分子生物學）、NIDHAL MAZZA（心理學）及葉海東（物理系）則獲頒成就獎。有關優異服務獎得主，請參閱第 14頁。

GENERAL EDUCATION & EXCHANGE 通識教育及交流計劃 GENERAL EDUCATION Two College General Education courses were offered as usual in 2018-19. Both courses are supervised by the Dean of General Education, ANN HUSS. Tutorial instruction was provided by Morningside’s Junior Fellows MAYTAL MARK (Northwestern University, Economics and History, 2015), MADISON REID (Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University, Graduate Certificate, 2017; University of Tulsa, Chinese Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, 2016) and NICOLE WONG (Stanford University, International Relations, 2018).

During the talk, Xu Xi shared her opinions about the changes Hong Kong has undergone over the last few decades, and read excerpts from two of her works, Dear Hong Kong and Insignificance. The Peer Mentoring Programme (PMP) wrapped up another successful term in November 2018 with its largest number of participants ever (16 mentors, 49 mentees). Designed and delivered by College Member Dr. YVONNE LOONG, the PMP prepares senior students to provide guidance and support to incoming first-year students.

In the spring, AUDREY CHUNG (Medicine) was awarded the David Parker General Education Best Essay Prize for an excellent essay written for GEMC1001 entitled “The ethical quandary of Controlled Human Infectious Model Studies (CHIM) in low and middle-income countries: from the perspectives of Aristotle, Confucius, Bentham and Kant”. Professor BENNY LIM adjudicated the competition again this year.

Students also ventured off campus with the Junior Fellows to enjoy performances of Shakespeare and The Great Gatsby, to view Art Basel, and enjoy various concerts throughout the year. The Junior Fellows also coordinated the weekly Film Club on Wednesday evenings for those who needed a break from studying.

The Writers Series continued into its seventh year with a visit from XU XI, an Indonesian-Chinese author renowned for her works on identity and belonging within Hong Kong society. Xu Xi’s work is informed by her childhood spent in Tsim Sha Tsui, living near Chungking Mansion’s multicultural community and growing up in an English-speaking Indonesian family.

In 2018-19, 28 Morningsiders spent one or two semesters on exchange in a variety of places including Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the USA. Meanwhile, the College welcomed 31 incoming exchange students from more than 10 countries.

書院於 2018 至 19 年度如常開設兩個書院通識教育課程，均由通識教育主任何素楠教授負責，導修課則由通識教育導師麥美彤（2015 年西北大學，經濟學及歷史）、麥雲昕（2017 年南京大學 — 約翰 • 霍普金斯大學；2016 年塔爾薩大學，中國研究、女性與性別研究）及黃嘉敏（2018 年史丹福大學，國際關係）負責。

在 2018 至 19 年度，28 名學生參加一至兩個學期的交流計劃，分別前往澳洲、奧地利、加拿大、智利、中國、丹麥、新加坡、南韓、英國及美國。與此同時，書院亦接待來自 10個國家共31名前來交流的學生。

在春季，鍾卓螢（醫學）憑 GEMC1001 課程的論文〈中低收入國家 CHIM 研究的道德困窘：從亞里士多德、孔子、邊沁及康德的角度分析〉奪得 David Parker 教授通識教育優秀論文獎。林國偉教授今年再度擔任論文獎評審。晨興訪問作家項目踏入第七年，來訪者是印尼華僑作家許素細。她以描寫本地社會內身份和歸屬感的作品著稱，兒時居於尖沙咀重慶大廈附近多元文化社區的經歷，以及在英語溝通的印尼家庭成長的環境，均對其作品有所影響。在講座上，她分享對本地社會過去幾十年轉變的個人看法，並朗讀其作品 Dear Hong Kong 及 Insignificance 的節錄部分。本年度的同儕導師計劃於 2018 年 11 月圓滿結束，是歷來最多人參與的一屆（16 名學長、49 名學員）。計劃由書院成員龍志溫博士設計及統籌，由高年班學生為新生提供正向輔導服務。本年度，同學亦與通識教育導師一起在校外欣賞莎士比亞劇目及《大亨小傳》，參加巴塞爾藝術展及各種音樂會。通識導師亦逢周三舉辦電影欣賞會，讓埋首學業的同學放鬆一下。

Over the past year, more than 70 Morningside students completed service learning projects as part of the College’s General Education programme. They dedicated over 2,800 hours of service work locally and abroad in countries including Canada, India, Nepal, and Vietnam. The College organized four service-learning trips over the summer. In May, 11 students participated in the College’s first service learning programme based in Hong Kong. Students heard lectures about service and social issues in Hong Kong, then followed-up with visits to local facilities and NGOs including Christian Action, Feeding Hong Kong, PathFinders, and the Ebenezer School and Home for the Visually Impaired. Students closed out the programme with a full service day with Habitat for Humanity in Tsuen Wan. Morningside also sent a cohort of 14 students to Fujian, China in May. Students built on last year’s work, renovating and building a wall in a 700 yearold tulou building that still houses some residents of Fujian. In June, 15 Morningside students participated in the College’s third service trip to Rabat, Morocco. Students visited organizations working on public health, sustainability, and women’s rights and gender-based violence prevention in Rabat and Marrakech. They also attended lectures by local leaders in

advocacy and government and networked with students and young activists in the Rabat region. Finally, in July, 10 students spent two weeks at The University of York, engaging with local non-profit organizations and social enterprises ranging from a rehabilitative women’s prison to a food bank to an incubator for innovative socially minded businesses. During their trip, students studied the context of service and poverty in the United Kingdom. CINDY XIN and VINCENT CHEUNG received the Morningside College Service Award for the 2018-19 academic year. In August 2018, Cindy organized a weeklong summer camp in Beijing for children from Sangzhi County, Hunan Province, whose families had been impacted by poverty and pneumoconiosis. Cindy, along with her peers, organized lectures and city-based excursions in Beijing as well as a mentor-mentee programme to support the participants. Meanwhile, Vincent co-organized the locally-based Love • Care • Boundaryless Project, which supported asylum seekers by providing Cantonese classes and Hong Kong history walks. As a law student, Vincent also spent time learning about the refugee claims process in Hong Kong and the barriers that individuals and families face as they await judgement on their status.

One of the few downsides of life in a small residential college such as Morningside is the difficulty coaches have in gathering enough students to form sports teams. This year, to remedy the situation, our Physical Education Lecturers TANG TSZ MING and ZOIE LAU collaborated closely with C.W. Chu College to organize joint training and courses for students, including basketball, lacrosse, orienteering, soccer, tennis and table tennis. Morningsiders also participated in badminton, volleyball, swimming, and track & field competitions this year. Mr. Tang and Ms. Lau also regularly encourage students to take the initiative to organize sports activities. Mr. Tang in particular dedicated considerable time and energy to advising and facilitating the work of the College’s outdoor club MC Rangers. The MC Rangers were busy in 2018-19, hiking Big Wave Bay, Kadoorie Farm, and Tung Ping Chau. They also organized a kayaking course and a cycling trip. Thanks to MC Rangers, students are able to make friends, build community, and enjoy Hong Kong’s natural beauty all at the same time!

The College’s primary objective when managing capital remains the same as in years past: to safeguard the College’s ability to continue as a going concern and to maintain a strong financial base to support the development of the College. To this end, the College invested in financial instruments which include funds held by the University that are managed in accordance with relevant financial management policies and practices.

書院的主要理財目標是確保書院可持續營辦，並建構穩健的財務基礎以支持往後的發展。故此，書院投資的基金均符合大學的金融管理政策及常規，其中包括大學所持有的基金。本年度的留本基金金額與去年相若。基金總額則由1.293 億元減少至 1.244 億元，主要是由於書院在 2018–19 年度的營運錄得赤字，即 910 萬元收入及 1,400 萬元支出的差額，其淨跌幅為 490萬元（即百分之三點八）。

There was no significant change in the total endowed capital. The decrease in total funds from $129.3m to $124.4m, representing a net decrease of $4.9m (or 3.8%), was mainly due to the deficit in College Operation in 2018-19, i.e. the difference between income of $9.1m and expenditure of $14.0m.

THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE

The College has devised fundraising and friendraising initiatives with a view to providing a good foundation for raising funds to support: the creation of in-college programmes and activities to prepare our students for postgraduate studies, scholarships and financial aid, and College operations generally. The current political climate makes fundraising particularly difficult at present but the College considers that it is appropriate to continue to lay the ground for the future. At the same time, the College expenditure will be kept under increased review in light of the unpredictable investment climate and current political situation.

書院已制訂嶄新的計劃推動籌款及建立人脈網絡，為籌募經費打好基礎，從而推展嶄新的書院活動來協助有志繼續深造的同學作好準備、設立獎助學金幫助有需要的同學，以及應付一般營運開支的需要。當前的政治氣氛令籌款工作倍見困難，然而書院仍有需要為未來作好準備。鑑於投資市場走向難以預測及當前的社會局勢，書院將會密切審視開支。

ASSEMBLY OF FELLOWS 院務委員會 The Assembly of Fellows is constituted and regulated in accordance with the Ordinance (Statute 16, 2B), the terms of which are enforceable ultimately by the Vice-Chancellor. The Assembly of Fellows is self-appointing.

DUTIES

The Assembly of Fellows sets the strategic direction of the College and regulates its administration and the management of its finances. It meets regularly under the chairmanship of the Master and is advised by its Committees.

The Assembly of Fellows assists the Master with:
