Morningside College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in 2006 with generous donations from the Morningside Foundation and Morningside Education Foundation Limited for the purpose of accommodating 300 students on a fully residential and communal dining basis.

The Morningside College Master’s Report is published annually and is circulated to all members of the University and College communities.

Professor Nicholas Rawlins 汪寧笙教授 What a year! On Sunday, November 9th, Morningside and CUHK jointly hosted the renowned soprano, Renee Fleming, who presented ‘Music and the Mind’ in an over-subscribed Lee Hysan Concert Hall. By the end of the following day, the campus was in turmoil, increasingly cut off from the wider world, and, over a period of five days as the chaos and tension steadily built up, a succession of small parties of students – leaving on foot with what they could carry – made their way off the campus and away to safety. By noon on November 15th the College had emptied. The final parties of students, along with the Resident Tutors and Junior Fellows who had so laudably stayed to be with, and look after, them, left that morning. Then Ann Huss, Lalla and I locked up, as securely as we could, and made our own way out – through the obstacles and across the roadblocks carrying Tycho and Cuba, past the now-shattered glass atrium of Lee Hysan Hall – to safe places for us all.

Those five sentences sum up a set of experiences which would, on their own, have made this a startlingly memorable year, but scarcely had we cleaned the College, and restored and reopened the campus, before we once more faced the need to shut down. This time we were responding to the emergence of a novel respiratory infection. Our experience turned out to be the regional forerunner of a developing, and persisting, global disaster. Yet I nonetheless see this very clearly as a year to remember, rather than as a year to try to forget. That is, quite simply, because throughout it all Morningside consistently rose to its challenges, rather than being brought low by them.

Ours is a community with much to be proud of.

Just look at the Master’s List. It recognises academic excellence. This year, it has 113 names. That is a record number: last year’s list had 81. All these students excelled despite having to switch from face-to-face to on-line courses in two massive disruptions of teaching. Their achievement reflects enormous credit both on them and on their teachers, who successfully and very rapidly adapted their courses to the new formats required.

I nonetheless see this very clearly as a year to remember, rather than as a year to try to forget. That is, quite simply, because throughout it all Morningside consistently rose to its challenges, rather than being brought low by them. Ours is a community with much to be proud of.

On-line teaching continues this term. Alongside, runs a stream of online College events that have been set up in ways that were impossible until recently, so as to keep our existing community connected – and so that this year’s intake, of whom only three are so far here in person, can already start to make new friends, find new interests and inspirations, and start to feel at home here, wherever they may actually be. We are as committed as ever to offering our students far more than just a place to eat and sleep between lectures and ensuring that the Morningside experience still lights up our students in ways that will surprise and delight both them and us. Those unpredictable outcomes are perhaps the best possible preparation for the unpredictable world that lies ahead. Our Junior Fellows, Yifu Dong, with Juliet Levesque and Maryellen Stohlman-Vanderveen (both of whom are newly arrived) have taken up key roles in this new enterprise along with the Morningside College Student Union and other student groups. I thank them all.

We also owe our deep, collective thanks to the wider community of Morningside’s supporters. Although meetings with our Committee of Overseers are among the many regular activities that have become irregular or virtual, our Overseers’ wise counsel and commitment remain part of our foundational bedrock. In these most uncertain and challenging times, financial support for the College and its core activities is more valued – and more crucial – than ever. I am immensely grateful to Dr J.S. Lee, who donated HK$1 million to support our international activities, and to the Morningside Foundation who matched his gift and have additionally pledged HK$7 million in each of the next three years to underpin our widely admired General Education programme – the heart and soul of the College. Such generosity represents a huge vote of confidence in our values, and a recognition of the distinctive and admirable way that Morningside conducted itself over the last year. It truly lived up to its founding vision, and with this help it will not only thrive but will also promulgate that vision more widely: if ever there was a need it is now.

There is of course a regular tide of change and renewal even without the tempests we have been living through.

The College has a new Deputy Master, Professor Anthony So, who will be well known to many of you. He has taken on the role alongside his University role as Associate Dean of Engineering: the principle that if you need something to be done then ask a busy person to do it remains as reliable as ever. The College has recently elected two former Fellows, Professor Chris Gane and Professor Janny Leung, to Emeritus Fellowships, in recognition of their quite exceptional contributions to the College. It is lovely to maintain our connection with them, and I am sure that you will all wish to join me in congratulating them on their election. Our College Secretary, Dora Dai, has also just left us to head a new office in the central administration. Our loss is most assuredly their gain, but I am pleased to say that she, too, will retain her connection with the College as our first ever non-academic Member. She carries with her not only our congratulations but also our thanks for her role in shaping Morningside.

I hope you will enjoy reading the rest of this report. I also hope that you will see why it remains such a pleasure for Lalla and me to be here. It is not, as many might imagine, despite the events of the last twelve to fourteen months: on the contrary, it is because of those events, and the way that the entire College community came through them. Whatever this year brings, I am confident that Morningside will once again make us proud.

MASTER’S MESSAGE 院長致辭

過去一年真叫人難忘！11 月 9 日的週日，晨興與中文大學 邀得蜚聲國際的女高音弗萊明主持「音樂與心靈」講座， 利希慎音樂廳座無虛席。講座翌日，校園卻陷入一片動盪 混亂，逐漸與外界隔絕。隨後五天，校園氣氛變得更混亂 緊張，部分學生帶著必需的行李，徒步離開校園，前往安 全的地方。11 月 15 日中午時份，晨興書院已空無一人；最 後一批同學在留下來照顧他們的宿舍導師和通識教育導師 陪伴下，於當天早上離開。他們離去後，我與 Lalla、何素 楠教授盡量把宿舍設施穩妥鎖好後，就帶著愛犬 Tycho 和 Cuba 跨過重重路障，途經利希慎音樂廳已破碎的玻璃中 庭，前往安全的地方。 上述一段文字概括描述了這令人難忘的經歷。然而，當我們 才剛把書院清理好，修復重開校園不久，卻又要再次關閉校 園。這次面對的是新型呼吸系統傳染病。沒想到，出現在區 內的這場疫症，會發展成為席捲全球的災難。雖然年內出現 種種事端，但我不會選擇忘記，而是會銘記心中。理由很簡 單，因為即使晨興年內面對種種挑戰，依然無畏無懼，沉著 應對。晨興上下的表現，確是值得我們自豪。

翻開本報告的「院長榮譽狀」一章，可見今年共有 113 名成 績優異的同學獲得表揚，打破歷年紀錄（去年共有 81 名同學 獲此榮譽）。今年獲表彰的同學雖然受到兩次停課的影響， 由面授課堂轉為網上學習，卻仍表現卓越，充分反映他們 以及各位老師為此付出的努力，迅速並成功地適應了新的 教學模式。 大學在本學期須繼續以網上形式授課，而書院最近亦在網 上舉行一連串的活動，以便與院內師生保持聯繫。雖然今 年暫時只有三名新生能夠親身來到書院，但無論新生身處 何方，已開始認識新朋友，發掘新興趣和新靈感，開始對 晨興產生家的感覺。我們一直致力為學生提供不止於食宿 的地方，而是確保書院的生活體驗可啟迪學生，讓大家都 各有所獲。那些難以預知的事情，或許正好讓同學為難以 預計的未來世界早作準備。通識教育導師董一夫，聯同兩 位剛加入書院的導師李慧姿和范美侖，將與晨興學生會及 其他學生組織攜手合作，加強同學的書院生活體驗。我謹 在此感謝他們。

雖然年內出現種種事端，但我不會選擇忘記，而是會銘記心中。理由 很簡單，因為即使晨興年內面對種種挑戰，依然無畏無懼，沉著應對。 晨興上下的表現，確是值得我們自豪。

我們亦衷心感謝支持晨興書院的廣大社群。雖然院監會的 會議及大部分定期活動均改為不定期或在網上進行，院 監會各成員的睿智灼見及鼎力支持仍然是我們的重要基 石。在此動盪不穩、困難重重的時勢，支持書院運作及其 主要活動的財政資助，尤其寶貴和重要。我衷心感謝李振 聲博士捐助 100 萬港元支持我們的國際交流活動，並感激 晨興基金會的配對捐款，且承諾在未來三年每年額外捐出 700 萬港元，支持我們獨特而廣受稱許的通識教育課程。如 此慷慨的捐助，是對我們的核心價值投下信任的一票，並且 肯定晨興過去一年的傑出表現。書院一直秉承創院願景，而 有關捐助將促進書院發展更上層樓，進一步弘揚願景。 即使沒有這些風風雨雨，世事依舊常變。書院年內迎來新 的副院長蘇文藻教授，大家將有機會認識他。他同時擔任 工程學院副院長——這樣的安排合乎「忙碌的人最可靠」的

原則。兩位前院務委員京柏年教授與梁美兒教授，最近獲 選為書院的榮休院務委員，以表彰他們為書院作出的傑出 貢獻。書院慶幸能夠繼續與他們保持聯繫，並衷心祝賀他 們當選。另外，院務主任戴佩華女士剛剛離任，轉到大學 新成立的中央部門出任主管。這是書院的損失，卻是大學 的收穫。可幸戴女士會以書院首位非學術成員的身份繼續 與我們保持聯繫。在此祝賀她履任新職，更感謝她為書院 成立初期至今作出的種種貢獻。 希望各位開卷愉快，並從中了解為何 Lalla 和我仍然對成為 晨興一份子感到高興。雖然過去 12 至 14 個月發生了許多 事情，可是，正正因為這些事情，因為書院上下的應對方 法，令我們慶幸自己是晨興一員。新的一年無論順逆，我 深信晨興定能讓我們再一次引以為榮。

THE COLLEGE

書院簡介

Fellows, students, and many parents of first-year students gathered for Formal Hall Dinner on 18 September 2019.

AUDREY CHUNG (Medicine) acted as the Master of Ceremonies and welcomed the first-year students with an enthusiastic speech. Master NICHOLAS RAWLINS spoke to the first-year students about starting a new phase in life, reminded all Morningside students of the importance of making longlasting friendships in our diverse community, and expressed gratitude for the support of the parents who joined the Morningside Community for dinner.

In early November, Judge DAVID NEUBERGER, former President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and a Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, visited campus. During his talk to a roomful of students, Neuberger discussed the history of the British common law system and the robustness of Hong Kong’s legal system. He also emphasized Hong Kong’s uniqueness in relation to Singapore and Mainland China.

In October, the College hosted Professor Lord ROBERT WINSTON, a British professor, medical doctor, scientist, TV presenter and Labour Party politician, as Distinguished Visitor.

Lord Winston gave a Communal Dinner talk on his career as a science researcher. A day later, at a public lecture titled “Man or Superman. Modifying Humans”, Winston reminded the audience of historical moments when scientific knowledge had been misused to horrifying effect. He moved on to a discussion of current issues surrounding the modification of human DNA and movingly called for caution and humility in scientific research into human DNA.

Just a few days after Lord Neuberger’s visit, the College celebrated the graduating Class of 2019. The Master congratulated the graduates and welcomed their families to campus. In his remarks, he reflected on how special Morningside is as a community and how the College had remained calm and harmonious despite ongoing tensions in our city.

Two student speakers represented the Class of 2019: RADHIKA NARANG (IBBA) and ALLAN LUI (Medicine). Radhika expressed her gratitude for all the support Morningside College had given her and her fellow Morningsiders, while Allan recounted his personal academic journey throughout his university career, which was supported by his classmates and influenced by College Fellows.

院務委員、學生及多位一年級新生家長於 2019 年 9 月 18 日 聚首一堂，出席高桌晚宴。鍾卓螢（醫學）擔任晚宴司儀， 熱烈歡迎一年級新生。院長汪寧笙教授致辭時提到一年級 生正展開人生新的里程，並提醒所有晨興學生在現今多元 化的社會應多結識朋友及保持長久的友誼，並感謝出席晚 宴的家長支持。 書院於 10 月邀請英國溫斯頓勳爵蒞臨擔任「傑出訪問學者」 項目的嘉賓，出席共膳晚宴，並以其科學研究工作為題發 表演講。溫斯頓勳爵既是教授、醫生、科學家，又是電視 節目主持人及工黨政治家。晚宴後一天，他再主持公開講 座，以「人或超人？改造人類」為題發表演講，提醒聽眾現 今科學知識被誤用所帶來的可怕後果。他闡述目前有關編 輯人類基因的問題，呼籲對人類基因進行科學研究時須抱 持謹慎和謙虛的態度。

英國最高法院前院長、香港終審法院非常任法官廖柏嘉勳 爵於 11 月初到訪書院與學生會面，座無虛席。他縷述英國 普通法制度的歷史以及香港穩健的法律制度，並指出相對 新加坡和中國內地而言香港有其獨特的一面。 廖柏嘉勳爵訪問後數天，書院為 2019 年畢業學生舉行畢業 典禮。院長祝賀畢業生，並歡迎其家人來到校園。他致辭 時指出晨興這個社區的特別之處，以及書院如何在社會動 盪之際仍能保持平靜和諧。 RADHIKA NARANG（工商管理學士綜合課程）和呂祖榮（醫學） 代表畢業生致辭。Radhika 感謝書院對她和其他晨興學生的 支持；呂祖榮則回顧他在大學生活中既得到同學的扶持， 又受到書院多位院務委員諄諄教導的學習歷程。

ADMISSIONS

新生概覽

College Fellows interviewed over 300 applicants in 2019. 76 students were admitted. International intake decreased while local Hong Kong intake increased slightly. Mainland intake remained stable with only a 2% variance.

Several differences were noted in student intake by Faculty when compared to 2018 intake statistics: Arts and Social Science intake doubled, while Business and Science student numbers were cut in half. Engineering, Law and Medicine intake remained stable.

The College maintained its commitment to ensuring that all students have access to the various opportunities that the College and the University provide. Close to HK$2m in Scholarships and Financial Aid were awarded to deserving Morningsiders this year.

書院院務委員於 2019 年甄選了 300 多名申請人，共取錄 76 名學生。國際學生減少，本地學生輕微上升，而中國內地 學生則保持穩定，差別僅為百分之二。 以新生所屬學院而言，收生比例跟 2018 年有所不同：文 學院及社會科學院人數增加一倍，工商管理學院及理學院 人數減少一半，而工程學院、法律學院及醫學院則與去年 相若。 書院繼續讓所有學生都能獲得書院和大學提供的各種機 會。書院今年合共提供近 200 萬港元獎學金及資助予合資 格學生。

STUDENT LIFE

Morningside College’s Student Union, led by President CHRISTIE LEUNG (Laws) during Term 1, represented students on College Committees and advocated on their behalf. In Spring 2020, students elected new Executive and Representative Councils, with WAYNE LEE (Mathematics) as the new Student Union President. Wayne and his team will welcome the incoming first-year students during a virtual Orientation Camp in August 2020.

The student-run outdoor group MC Rangers hiked Grass Island (Tap Mun) in September, hosted a scenic cycling event to the Tai Mei Tuk Dam in October, and concluded their fall programming with their first-ever Ma On Shan Camp Hike.

After a night of sleeping under the stars, a few brave Morningsiders woke up at the break of dawn to conquer a neighboring peak, just in time to catch a beautifully colourful sunrise.

晨興書院學生會於上學期在主席梁婧珩（法學士）的領導 下，代表學生參與書院各委員會事務。在 2020 年春季，學 生選出了新一屆學生會幹事會及代表會，並由李宗諺（數 學）擔任新一屆學生會主席。宗諺及其團隊現正展開工作， 準備於 2020 年8 月的網上迎新營迎接一年級新生。

為表揚積極努力、充滿幹勁的學生，書院頒發傑出貢獻獎 予梁婧珩（法學士）、黃忠文（經濟學）、KHOI PHAN（系統工 程與工程管理學）及于子凌（專業會計學），並頒發成就獎予 何澤淇（建築學）及 NIKUNJ TANEJA（計算機科學）。有關優 異服務獎的得主，請參閱第 17頁。

學生自發組織 MC Rangers 於 9 月到塔門遠足，10 月舉辦大 美督船灣淡水湖主壩單車遊，並首次到馬鞍山遠足露營， 為秋季活動劃上圓滿句號。在馬鞍山星空下露營度過一個 晚上後，一些勇敢的學生在破曉時分出發，登上鄰近的一 座陡峭山峰，剛好趕及欣賞日出美景。

GENERAL EDUCATION Two College General Education courses were offered as usual in 2019-20. Both courses are supervised by the Dean of General Education, ANN HUSS. Tutorial instruction was provided

by Morningside’s Junior Fellows SAKINA ABDUS SHAKUR (Yale Institute of Sacred Music, MA, 2017), YIFU DONG (Yale University, History, 2017), and WILLIAM TAYLOR (University of Glasgow, 2019).

The Writers Series continued into its eighth year with visits from Dr. Tammy Ho, president of PEN Hong Kong, and founding co-editor of the first Hong Kong-based international Asian-focused journal, Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, and Matthew Polly, author of Bruce Lee: A Life. The Polly event was co-organised with the Hong Kong International Literary Festival.

In the spring, AROOBA YOUNAS (Geography & Resource Management, Year 1) was awarded the David Parker General Education Best Essay Prize for an excellent essay written for GEMC1001 entitled “The Amazon”. Dr. Julie Chiu adjudicated the competition this year.

The Peer Mentoring Programme (PMP) wrapped up another successful term in November 2019 with 16 mentors and 40 mentees. Designed and delivered by College Member Dr. YVONNE LOONG, the PMP prepares senior students to provide guidance and support to incoming first-year students.

通識教育 書院於 2019 至 20 年度如常開設兩個書院通識教育課程， 均由通識教育主任何素楠教授負責，導修課則由通識教育 導師施娜（2017 年耶魯神聖音樂學院，文學碩士）、董一夫 （2017 年耶魯大學，歷史）及泰志煒（2019 年格拉斯哥大學） 負責。

晨興訪問作家項目踏入第八年，年內首位來訪學者是香港 筆會主席何麗明博士。她也是首份立足於香港的國際亞洲 期刊《茶：亞洲文學期刊》的創辦人之一。另一位訪問學者 是《李小龍的一生》的作者包默思，他的訪問活動由書院與 香港國際文學節合辦。

在春季，AROOBA YOUNAS（ 地理與資源管理一年級生）憑 GEMC1001 課程的論文〈亞馬遜〉奪得 David Parker 教授通識 教育優秀論文獎。擔任今年論文獎評審的是趙茱莉博士。

本年度的同儕導師計劃於 2019 年 11 月圓滿結束，共 16 名學 長及 40 名學員參與。計劃由書院成員龍志溫博士設計及統 籌，由高年級學生為新生提供正向輔導服務。

In 2019-20, 38 Morningsiders spent one or two semesters on exchange in a variety of places including Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, France, the Netherlands, Scotland, South Korea, Taiwan and the USA.

SERVICE

社會服務

Over the past year, more than 70 Morningside students completed service learning projects as part of the College’s General Education programme. They dedicated over 3,000 hours of service work locally and abroad in countries including China, Nepal, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

過去一年，超過 70 名晨興學生修讀書院的社區服務學習課 程。他們於本地、中國內地、尼泊爾、英國及越南參與社 會服務，共獻出逾3,000小時。

Due to the global pandemic, the College was unable to run its regular summer service-learning trips. Instead, 14 finalyear students completed a newly created online service learning programme designed by the General Education team. Students participated in online conversations with multiple local service providers including Feeding Hong Kong, The Women’s Foundation, Christian Action, Beyond Vision Projects and Pathfinders. They also completed group and individual projects on issues related to hunger, gender equality, refugees, disability and foreign domestic workers.

受到新型冠狀病毒的影響，書院未能如過去般舉辦暑期社 區服務學習計劃。不過，通識教育組為此設計了全新的網 上社區服務學習計劃，有 14 名畢業班學生參加。他們與 多家本地社區服務機構的代表在網上交流，包括樂餉社、 婦女基金會、基督教勵行會、Beyond Vision Projects 及融 幼社。此外，他們完成了個人及小組的專題報告，論述饑 餓、性別平等、難民、傷殘人士及外籍家庭傭工等議題。 汪宇盛（金融科技學）獲頒 2019 至 20 年度晨興書院優異服務 獎。他在「大學生 STEM 創客計劃」中協助指導中學生，義 務擔任香港青年協會大使，出任晨興書院學生會的總務主 任，並且是2019年大學迎新營的召集人。

Ethan Wong (Financial Technology) received the Morningside College Service Award for the 2019-20 academic year. Ethan mentored secondary school students in the U-STEMist Scheme, volunteered as a Federation of Youth Groups Ambassador, was General Affairs Officer for the Morningside Student Union, and a convener of the 2019 university orientation camps.

Income rose from $9.1m to $14.6m, an increase of $5.5m.

While recurrent income remained stable, donations and matching grants went up from $1.1m to $7.6m. The increase was due to the launch of the Eighth Matching Grant Scheme by the Government and the continuation of the donation matching scheme supported by the Morningside Foundation Limited. Interest and investment return decreased from $3.4m to $2.6m owing to the volatile financial market, recording a drop of $0.8m.

Expenditure rose by 12.1% over the past year, from $14.0m to $15.7m. The increase of $1.7m was mainly due to the increase of depreciation of fixed assets resulting from the uplifted capitalization threshold. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the activities planned for the College and students were cancelled or have gone online.

While expenditure on college operation, scholarship and financial aid, and exchange programmes increased, expenses for most of the college life and general education activities, and special events have significantly decreased.

The College’s primary objective when managing capital remains the same as in years past: to safeguard the College’s ability to continue as a going concern and to maintain a strong financial base to support the development of the College. To this end, the College invested in financial instruments which include funds held by the University that are managed in accordance with relevant financial management policies and practices.

書院的主要理財目標是確保書院可持續營辦，並建構穩健 的財務基礎以支持往後的發展。故此，書院投資的基金均 符合大學的金融管理政策及常規，其中包括大學所持有的 基金。 本年度的留本基金金額與去年相若。基金總額則由1.244 億 元減少至 1.232 億元，主要是由於書院在 2019–20 年度的營 運錄得赤字，即 1,460 萬元收入及 1,570 萬元支出的差額， 其淨跌幅為 120萬元（即百分之一）。

There was no significant change in the total endowed capital.

The decrease in total funds from $124.4m to $123.2m, representing a net decrease of $1.2m (or 1.0%), was mainly due to the deficit in College Operation in 2019–20, i.e. the difference between income of $14.6m and expenditure of $15.7m.

THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE

前瞻

The world is facing unprecedented challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the College is no exception.

While the current economic climate makes fundraising even more difficult, the College managed to secure funding for the coming three years to support its vigorous unique General Education programme. The College will continue to lay the groundwork for raising funds to support the creation of incollege programmes and activities for General Education, to prepare our students for postgraduate studies, scholarships and financial aid, and for College operations generally. At the same time, College expenditure will be reviewed more frequently in light of the unpredictable investment climate.

2019 冠狀病毒病疫情為全球帶來前所未有的挑戰，而書 院亦不能倖免。儘管當前的經濟環境令籌款工作更見困 難，書院卻仍能成功為其獨特的通識教育課程籌得未來三 年的經費。書院將繼續為籌募經費打好基礎，從而推展嶄 新的通識教育活動、協助有志繼續深造的同學作好準備、 設立獎助學金幫助有需要的同學，以及應付一般營運開支 的需要。鑑於投資市場走向難以預測，書院會更密切地審 視開支。

ASSEMBLY OF FELLOWS

院務委員會

The Assembly of Fellows is constituted and regulated in accordance with the Ordinance (Statute 16, 2B), the terms of which are enforceable ultimately by the Vice Chancellor. The Assembly of Fellows is self-appointing.

院務委員會乃依照「香港中文大學條例」規程 16 的 2B 條組 成並受其監管，而校長則具最終權力執行有關條文。院務 委員會可自行任命其成員。

DUTIES

職責

The Assembly of Fellows sets the strategic direction of the College and regulates its administration and the management of its finances. It meets regularly under the chairmanship of the Master and is advised by its Committees.

院務委員會負責制訂書院的策略性路向、監管書院的行政 及管理財務，並會定期舉行會議。院務委員會由書院院長 擔任主席，下設多個委員會提供諮詢意見。

The Assembly of Fellows assists the Master with:

(1) arranging tutorial instruction, pastoral counseling and other forms of education;

The Assembly of Fellows normally meets three times a year.

Committees of the Assembly of Fellows develop policies for approval by the full Assembly of Fellows and subsequently monitor their implementation.
