Founded by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church to train young men for ministry; later broadened to educate men and women as teachers.

Named for Rev. Lyttleton F. Morgan, first chairman of the Board of Trustees, who donated land to the college.

Awarded to George F. McMechen, who became a Baltimore civic leader and one of Morgan’s strongest supporters.

Following a $50,000 Andrew Carnegie grant (1915), the College relocated to its present site; Carnegie Hall was erected in 1919.

The State of Maryland purchased the school, making it a public institution open to students of all races.

The State Legislature named Morgan a university, authorized doctoral degrees, and restored its own governing board.

Higher-education reorganization strengthened Morgan’s authority to offer advanced programs and designated its urban mission.

Designated by the Maryland Legislature as a doctoral research university on a 143-acre campus enrolling about 7,700 students.

Traditions We Share Promethean Procession START OF THE YEAR A candle-lighting rite of passage dating to 1937.

New students process as the light of Morgan State University from the steps of Holmes Hall, symbolizing their journey from matriculation to graduation.

Matriculation Convocation START OF THE YEAR The official welcoming ceremony, where faculty, staff, and students greet new Bears entering the University. Mandatory for freshmen and sophomores.

What To Do If... — Critical Situation Guides SITUATION: YOU ARE IN DISTRESS You are not alone. Here is what to do right now: 1.​ Call the Counseling Center: 443-885-3130 (walk-ins welcome during office hours).

Your Privacy, Your Rights Now that you’re in college, you take greater responsibility for managing your own educational experience, and your records are yours to protect. Under federal privacy law (FERPA), the university generally cannot share your education records with your parents, family, or others without your written permission. If you want to give someone access to certain records, you can authorize it through the appropriate office. Have questions about your privacy rights? Reach out to the Office of the Registrar.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is a federal law that protects the privacy of your education records. In college, these rights belong to you, not your parents.

Education Records

Records the university keeps that are directly related to you, such as your grades, transcript, class schedule, and disciplinary records.

Directory Information

Limited info the university may release without your consent (e.g., your name, enrollment status) unless you ask for it to be withheld.

FERPA Waiver / Consent

The written authorization you file to let a parent, family member, or other third party access specific protected records.

Eligible Student

You! Once you turn 18 or enroll in college, the FERPA rights transfer to you and you decide who can see your records.
