What Is the Bearprint?

The Bearprint is your student’s personal blueprint for growth at Morgan State University. It is a learning framework built around five areas of development. Every program, event, and experience through the Division of Student Affairs connects back to the Bearprint, giving your student an intentional path to build the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in college and beyond.

College is more than classes; it is where your student grows into their fullest self. The Bearprint helps your student make the most of every opportunity by showing them what to pursue and why it matters. Instead of navigating their journey by chance, the Bearprint gives your student direction, purpose, and a clear way to track their own development across all five areas. It keeps them grounded in the Morgan mission while preparing them for the world ahead.

What To Do If You Are Concerned About Your Student

SITUATION: YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT YOUR STUDENT'S EMOTIONAL WELLBEING 1.​ Contact your student directly and express your concern warmly and without judgment.

2.​ Encourage them to visit the Counseling Center: 443-885-3130. Counseling is free, confidential, and short-term.

3.​ If you believe your student is in immediate danger, call 911 or Campus Police: 443-885-3103.

4.​ Contact Student Support Outreach Services (SOS): sos@morgan.edu - staff can provide guidance to families.

5.​ Submit a CARE referral on your student's behalf at morgan.edu/student-support-and-outreach.

A Note About Student Privacy As students enter college, they assume greater responsibility for managing their educational experience.

Federal privacy laws, including FERPA, may limit the information university employees can share with parents and families. Students who wish to authorize access to certain records should consult the appropriate university office. Questions regarding FERPA should be directed to the Office of the Registrar.

Signs to Watch For Even over the phone, parents often detect changes. Look for: changes in mood or energy, missed classes, withdrawal from communication, increased stress about finances, or talk of hopelessness. Trust your instincts and reach out to SOS if you're concerned.

SITUATION: YOUR STUDENT NEEDS ACADEMIC ACCOMMODATIONS ●​ Encourage your student to contact SDSS early, ideally before the semester begins. ●​ Help your student gather documentation (medical, psychological, IEP/504 plans from the past 3-5 years). ●​ Unlike K-12, students must self-advocate in college. Parents are not part of the formal accommodation process. ●​ Remind your student to renew their Accommodation Memo every semester. ●​ Contact SDSS at sdss@morgan.edu with general process questions.

SITUATION: YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR STUDENT'S ACADEMICS 1.​ Encourage your student to connect with a tutor through the Academic Enrichment Program (AEP) in their residence hall.

2.​ Ask your student if they have met with their academic advisor and professors during office hours.

3.​ If stress or anxiety may be interfering, encourage a visit to the Counseling Center.

The UHC provides comprehensive, affordable medical care to students. Accepted insurance plans include: United Healthcare SHIP (student plan offered by MSU), CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tricare, Aetna, and Cigna. The Health Center does not accept Medicaid or Medicare.

Plan for Move-Out​ At the end of the academic year, students should clean their space, remove all belongings, return their keys, and complete the checkout process to avoid additional charges.

Residence Hall Rules & Regulations A quick-reference guide for residents

All policies in the Residence Life Handbook and Hall Agreement are part of the Code of Student Conduct. Violations are referred to the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities. All residents are expected to comply.

The Rules at a Glance ALCOHOL & DRUGS

APPLIANCES

Possession or consumption of alcohol and any controlled or illegal drugs is strictly prohibited on University premises.

Hot plates, grills, ranges, and toaster-ovens are prohibited. One microwave per room/apartment is allowed; irons must have auto shut-off and RD approval.

ASSIGNED SPACE

CANDLES & INCENSE

You may not let others occupy or switch your assigned room without permission from Residence Life.

Candles, incense, potpourri, and any open flame are forbidden—whether lit or unlit.

DAMAGE TO PROPERTY

FIRE SAFETY / ARSON

Residents are responsible for damage, theft, or loss in their space. Do not deface rooms with nails, tape, paint, screws, or stickers.

Never set fires or misuse alarms, smoke detectors, hoses, extinguishers, or emergency phones.

FURNITURE

KEYS

Lounge furniture stays in the lounge. Beds and furnishings may not be disassembled or rearranged without written RD permission.

Do not duplicate, transfer, or loan keys/sensors, or change locks.

Report lockouts and lost keys to staff immediately.

MANDATORY MEETINGS

NOISE

Attend every floor/hall meeting called by Residence Life or the University.

24-hour courtesy hours apply. Quiet hours are 10 PM–10 AM nightly, with 24-hour quiet hours during midterms and finals.

PARKING

PARTIES

Park only in the provided spaces. Never park on the lawn—including during move-in or move-out.

Disorderly, disruptive, or reckless conduct that interferes with others is prohibited.

PETS

POSTINGS

Pets of any kind are not permitted.

Signs and posters need RD approval and may only go in designated areas.

ROOM ENTRY

ROOM INSPECTIONS

Residence Life may enter/search rooms when necessary for safety, inspections, maintenance, or to recover University property.

Keep your room clean and sanitary. Routine inspections occur weekly.

SCREENS

SMOKING

Never remove window screens. Report any damage immediately.

Smoking is prohibited in all areas of the residence halls, including your own room.

SPORTS

TRASH

No rollerblades, cleats, or bouncing/throwing balls indoors—anything that can damage floors or sprinklers.

Dispose of personal trash in provided receptacles, never in common areas.

WEAPONS

HALL AGREEMENT

Firearms, BB guns, knives, brass knuckles, and similar weapons are prohibited.

Violations of the Resident Life Hall Agreement are referred for judicial proceedings.

How Families Can Support Their Student Through The SDSS Process The Student Disability Support Services (SDSS) office works with students to provide reasonable accommodations and support services that promote equal access and academic success. ●​ Encourage Your Student to Register Early​ Students who may need accommodations should complete the SDSS Intake Form and submit current documentation from a qualified healthcare provider or specialist as early as possible. ●​ Support the Interactive Process​ After documentation is reviewed, students will meet with SDSS staff to discuss how their disability impacts their academic experience and determine appropriate accommodations. ●​ Help Your Student Understand Their Responsibilities​ If approved, students will receive an Accommodation Memo outlining their accommodations.

The conduct process is educational, designed to promote learning, not just punish.

Only the charged student can receive case details from OSRR. Encourage your student to communicate directly.

A student may invite a parent to serve as their advisor in a conduct meeting. Consult the Code of Student Conduct for details.

Founded by the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church to train young men for ministry; later broadened to educate men and women as teachers.

Named for Rev. Lyttleton F. Morgan, first chairman of the Board of Trustees, who donated land to the college.

Awarded to George F. McMechen, who became a Baltimore civic leader and one of Morgan’s strongest supporters.

Following a $50,000 Andrew Carnegie grant (1915), the College relocated to its present site; Carnegie Hall was erected in 1919.

The State of Maryland purchased the school, making it a public institution open to students of all races.

The State Legislature named Morgan a university, authorized doctoral degrees, and restored its own governing board.

Higher-education reorganization strengthened Morgan’s authority to offer advanced programs and designated its urban mission.

Designated by the Maryland Legislature; a doctoral research university on a 143-acre campus enrolling about 7,700 students.

Professional Presence: Helping Your Student Make a Strong Impression As your student navigates college, they will encounter opportunities that require them to make positive first impressions, whether at career fairs, internship interviews, networking events, leadership programs, presentations, or professional meetings. One important way students can demonstrate confidence and professionalism is through their appearance. Encourage your student to dress appropriately for the occasion and to understand that their attire can communicate preparedness, confidence, and respect for others.

Professional dress often helps students feel more confident, build credibility, and present themselves effectively in academic, professional, and community settings.

While success is determined by much more than appearance alone, how students present themselves can influence how they are perceived by employers, faculty, peers, and community members. Supporting your student in developing professional habits, including appropriate dress, can help prepare them for future career and leadership opportunities. A helpful rule of thumb is to encourage your student to dress one step above the occasion when participating in professional or career-related events. Their appearance should reflect the goals, aspirations, and future they are working toward.

A Note About Student Privacy As students enter college, they assume greater responsibility for managing their educational experience.

Federal privacy laws, including FERPA, may limit the information university employees can share with parents and families. Students who wish to authorize access to certain records should consult the appropriate university office. Questions regarding FERPA should be directed to the Office of the Registrar.

Privacy Terms to Know Term

What it means

FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, a federal law protecting the privacy of student education records. At the college level, these rights transfer to the student.

Education Records

Records directly related to a student and maintained by the university, such as grades, transcripts, class schedules, and disciplinary records.

Directory Information

Limited information the university may release without consent (e.g., name, enrollment status) unless the student requests it be withheld.

FERPA Waiver / Consent

A written authorization that a student files to grant a parent, family member, or third party access to specific protected records.

Eligible Student

Any student age 18 or older, or enrolled in a postsecondary institution, is the person who now holds the FERPA rights.
