What Is the BEARprint?

The BEARprint is our students’ personal blueprint for growth at Morgan State University. It is a learning framework built around five areas of development. Signs and Sources of Distress What to watch for — in the classroom, the office, and the residence hall.

You do not need to be a counselor to notice that something has changed. Distress usually announces itself in ordinary ways first: a strong student who stops turning in work, a quiet student who becomes volatile, a familiar face that disappears. Trust what you observe. A single indicator may mean nothing; a cluster of them, or a sharp change from a student’s baseline, is worth a conversation and often worth a referral.

Behavioral and Physical Indicators

▪​ Marked change in personal hygiene or appearance ▪​ Noticeable weight gain or loss ▪​ Falling asleep in class or at odd times ▪​ Irritability, tearfulness, or intense emotion out of proportion to the situation ▪​ Impaired or disjointed speech; difficulty communicating clearly ▪​ Difficulty concentrating; anxiety or panic ▪​ Visible self-harm, destruction of property, or unruly behavior ▪​ Loss of contact with reality i.e.: hallucinations, disconnected thoughts

Any reference to suicide, self-harm, or harm to others is taken seriously…always.

What You Can Do A faculty or staff member is often the first person to notice that a student is struggling, and the first person that student trusts enough to tell. You are not expected to provide counseling. Your role is to notice, to respond with care, and to connect the student to the people whose job it is to help.

Speak Directly When you recognize that a student is in academic or personal distress, say so. Acknowledge openly that you have noticed, that you are sincerely concerned about their welfare, and that you are willing to help them explore their options. Most students respond to being seen. Some will not be receptive, and that is not a failure on your part.

Refer, Even If You Are Unsure In some cases, and in order to ensure that students of concern do not fall into the gaps between the people who notice and the people who intervene, a C.A.R.E. referral is warranted even when you cannot articulate exactly what is wrong. S.O.S. will assess and determine the appropriate steps. If you are unsure whether a referral is warranted, refer anyway.

A Word About Confidentiality FERPA does not stop you from sharing a concern.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act does not prohibit the sharing of personal observations and knowledge about a student among University officials when there is a legitimate concern related to student or campus safety.

Do not promise a student confidentiality you cannot keep. Instead, tell them plainly: “I care about what happens to you, so I may need to involve people who can help.”

Tips for Supporting and Encouraging Students

These are the small moves that make a difference. None of them require special training, only attention and a willingness to be direct.

▪​ Ask to see the student in private. Utilize your office to provide a safe and secure environment.

▪​ Briefly name what you have observed and why it concerns you. Be honest rather than vague.

▪​ Listen carefully to what the student is troubled about and try to see the issue from their point of view, without agreeing or disagreeing.

▪​ Avoid labeling the student’s behavior or diagnosing the problem. Describe what you saw instead.

▪​ Do not ignore strange, inappropriate, or alarming behavior, or explain it away. The student can be told plainly that the behavior is distracting or inappropriate.

▪​ Help the student identify options and think through the likely consequences of each.

▪​ If you can, offer to call the office with them, or walk them there. Students are more likely to accept help when they feel supported.

▪​ Tell the student what there is to gain from meeting with a counselor or another professional, many have never done it and do not know what to expect.

▪​ Be open about the limits of what you can do. “This is beyond what I can help with, but I know who can” is a complete and respectful answer.

▪​ Follow up. A short check-in email a week later tells the student the referral was care, not disposal.

▪​ If a student appears to be in imminent danger of hurting themselves or others, consult the Counseling Center or call MSUPD immediately.

▪​ Never keep threats of self-harm or harm to others a secret, not even when asked to.

▪​ Take care of yourself. Supporting a student in crisis is demanding and draining. Debrief with a colleague or your chair.

Not every behavior needs to be present, and this list is not exhaustive. When you refer a student in distress, make a parallel referral to S.O.S. or the Counseling Center so that follow-up and feedback loops are complete.

Student Support & Outreach Services (S.O.S.) Referrals to the C.A.R.E. Team Coordinated support before a concern becomes a crisis.

What the C.A.R.E. Team Does The C.A.R.E. Team works with students who may be in distress or whose behavior is a concern to others.

Coordinated through Student Support & Outreach Services (S.O.S.), the team provides support and assistance to a student before more significant problems arise. Its focus is proactive: supportive intervention and prevention guidance for any Morgan student who is struggling. The goals are to help the student stay focused on academic success, to avert more serious difficulties, and to protect the safety of both the student and the Morgan community. The S.O.S. Team works in tandem with the University community. This guide is a first step; the team invites you to submit a referral or consult with them at any point along the way.

Mental Health First Aid Training Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Higher Education is an evidence-based certification course built for faculty, staff, and others who regularly interact with college students. The Student Contemplating Suicide Students who are considering suicide are usually deeply ambivalent, and they typically respond to help. Most want to communicate what they are feeling, and any opportunity to do so should be encouraged. The Student Who Is Anxious or Depressed Anxiety is commonly triggered by unexpected events, conflict, unfamiliar situations, and unreasonable self-expectations; these students often have trouble making decisions. Depression may show up as low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, changes in appetite or sleep, low energy, and little interest in daily activities, and sometimes as irritability or anger rather than sadness. In its most serious form, depression can include self-destructive thoughts.

The Student Who Is Disruptive Disruptive behavior is conduct that interferes with or interrupts the educational process of other students or the normal operations of the University, which are verbally abusing or intimidating others, making hostile remarks out of turn, taking over a lecture, being overly demanding of faculty and staff, or notably disrupting an environment outside the classroom. A disruptive student typically resists correction, which is precisely why documentation and referral are important.

A Student Who Is Being Hazed Hazing is not a rite of passage, a tradition, or a private matter between students. It is a violation of the Morgan State University Code of Student Conduct, a misdemeanor under Maryland law, and a reportable incident under federal law.

Maryland law (Md. Criminal Law § 3-607) makes it illegal for any person connected with a school, college, or university to recklessly or intentionally do an act or create a situation that subjects a student to the risk of serious bodily injury for the purpose of initiation into a student organization. A student's implied or expressed consent is not a defense.

Federal law (the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which amended the Clery Act) requires universities to publish anti-hazing policies and prevention programming, report hazing incidents in the Annual Security Report, and maintain a public Campus Hazing Transparency Report summarizing organizations found responsible for hazing violations.

Hazing is not limited to fraternities and sororities. It occurs in bands, athletic teams, club sports, honor societies, ministries, ROTC units, service organizations, and social clubs — recognized and unrecognized alike, on and off campus.

The Student in Poor Contact with Reality These students have difficulty distinguishing what is real from what is not. Their thinking may be illogical, confused, or disturbed; they may coin new words, see or hear things others do not, hold irrational beliefs, or behave in ways that seem bizarre. Generally, these students are not dangerous.

They are frightened and overwhelmed.

Managing Disruptive Student Behavior A decision guide — Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities.

Step 1 · Start With Prevention Clear norms prevent most disruption and make it far easier to respond when disruption does occur. Use your syllabus to establish both academic and behavioral expectations.

▪​ Describe what productive participation looks like in your class, and what disruptive behavior looks like.

▪​ State how disruptive behavior will be addressed, and what the consequences are if it continues.

▪​ Address classroom expectations out loud on the first day, not just in writing.

▪​ Model the behavior you expect.

▪​ Request periodic anonymous feedback from students about how the class is going.

What appears in a syllabus tells students what is normal. When support services are listed alongside office hours and the grading scale, seeking help reads as part of being a Morgan student rather than an admission of failure. The statements below are written to be pasted directly into a course syllabus, in full or in part. Academic Accommodations What faculty need to know — and why implementation matters.

Accommodations do not lower the standards or course requirements. They are the legally required adjustments that give a student with a documented disability equal access to a course and programming. Morgan students are approved for accommodations with Student Disability Support Services after completing an intake process and submitting documentation; by the time a memo reaches you, accommodations are approved for you to help implement.

Conditions That May Qualify If a condition affects one or more daily life activities, it may be considered a disability. Here are some examples of qualifying conditions, though there are more:

Faculty and staff play a key role in identifying students who may be experiencing food insecurity — indicators include expressed financial stress, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, or mentions of skipping meals.

The UHC provides comprehensive, affordable medical care to students. Accepted insurance plans include United Healthcare SHIP (the student plan offered by MSU), CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tricare, Aetna, and Cigna. The Health Center does not accept Medicaid or Medicare and proof of insurance is not required to use the University Health Center.

How Faculty and Staff Can Support Student Health ▪​ Help students get started — encourage them to schedule at morgan.edu/university-health-center/schedule-an-appointment.

▪​ Know what to expect: students may schedule or walk in, first-come first-served. A nurse evaluates the student, who may then be seen by a provider, scheduled for follow-up, or referred to a specialist or hospital.

▪​ Encourage ongoing care — students can cancel or reschedule through the Student Health Portal and should take an active role in managing their health.

▪​ Do not require a doctor’s note for routine short illness if your course policy can accommodate it; requiring one sends sick students out into the world to get it.

Case Management: What Happens After You Refer A case manager reviews the referral, reaches out to the student, and works with them to identify needs, connect them to campus and community resources, and stays in contact through the resolution of the concern. Case management is voluntary for the student and non-clinical, it does not replace counseling or medical care, and it does not carry a conduct outcome. What it does is make sure a struggling student is not navigating six offices alone.

Training for your department S.O.S. offers Mental Health First Aid training for faculty and staff. Contact the office to schedule a session for your department, it is the single most useful thing a unit can do to prepare for the conversations described in this guide.
