DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Greetings, Morgan alumni. Happy Homecoming!! As we all know, Homecoming is an exciting time for all of us, and we anticipate that this year will be no different. I’m quite sure you already know that Homecoming is early this year, on Oct. 6, so I hope you have made the necessary plans to be on campus to participate in all we do during this annual celebration. There’s nothing like a Morgan State Homecoming! On Friday, Oct. 5, please join us at our annual MSUAA Homecoming Business Meeting, where Dr. Wilson will report to alumni on recent developments, our many accomplishments, as well as the challenges we have faced and will face here at the University. What he has to share with us will not only be educational, exciting and uplifting but will create a sense of pride in knowing you are a vital part of all we are as proud alumni of Morgan State University. Last year, there was not an empty seat in the University Student Center Theatre. I hope you will make every effort to attend. Then, on Saturday morning, plan to arrive early, so you can find a good space somewhere along the route to watch our festive and exciting parade. After the parade, the fun continues. Some of you will head straight for the tailgating, while, others, we hope, will make their way to the stadium to watch our Morgan Bears take on the South Carolina State Bulldogs. And, after our big win (Yes, I’m claiming victory.), we all know what happens: more tailgating! We have a day full of

Homecoming 2018!

An Upward Course for MSU Athletics A good athletic director is always focused on winning, on and off the fields of play. And Morgan’s A.D., Edward Scott, seems well-suited to the job of “victor in chief.” While acknowledging the big challenges Morgan Intercollegiate Athletics has faced during his 22-month tenure, he rattles off a long list of goals exceeded or met, among them: greatly increased academic support for MSU scholar-athletes, funded by an $887,000 NCAA grant to establish a five-person Student-Athlete Services unit; Edward Scott an increase in Morgan athletes’ average GPA to 2.8, two years earlier than anticipated; a successful appeal of NCAA sanctions from a 10-team ban on postseason play to a three-team ban, for the 2018–19 academic year; a MEAC Championship for the women’s tennis team last year; the best single-season record in Morgan’s history for the women’s softball team; and so on. Scott notes that “getting through the NCAA infractions case…was one of the reasons I was hired.” Although he expects the postseason ban to set back Morgan

Important Facts for Homecoming 2018 The Homecoming Parade will begin on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018 at 9 a.m. (starts at Chinquapin Parkway and concludes at E. football in the short term, he also expects improvement in the program in 2018. “There are a couple of goals. The first is to win more than one game (as the Bears did in 2017),” Scott says. “I’m being honest about that. That’s unacceptable for an athletic director for a Division I program. The second thing is to figure out the head coaching situation. I would like some stability in our program. I think Coach Jones has done a really good job recruiting, especially in the Baltimore area. He’s done an amazing job in Maryland. “And…I think the next piece for football is to replace the turf and do some upgrades to Hughes Stadium, which I think will happen this summer. That obviously (will help) with recruiting,” he adds. Highlights of our football season include the “Battle for Greater Baltimore Rematch” against Towson State, which took place on Sept. 1, in Hughes Stadium, and, of course, the Homecoming game against South Carolina State University on Oct. 6. Support from MSU alumni has been “great,” Scott says, “in the sense that they understand what I inherited. They’re giving me a little bit of patience to try to turn it around, but as you want as an athletic director, they also have high expectations…. I think they understand that we’re serious about the future of Morgan athletics.” There will be ABSOLUTELY no grills or grilling allowed on the Morgan State University campus, except in the designated paid tailgate parking lots. There will be no tailgating in any garage on the University campus. Organizational rental tents are available. The following tent rental packages are available for the 2018 Homecoming tailgate festivities: 30x60 Package: $3,460.00 20x40 Package: $1,816.00 20x40 Package (Econo Tent): $996.25 For more information about tent rentals and packages, please contact Floyd E. activities that include: stepping by the various sororities and fraternities, catching up with old friends, attending Morgan Memories and other after-parties on- and off-campus, and just hanging out. Whatever your day looks like, memories will be created, and, no doubt, it will be filled with lots of fun. As the Homecoming weekend draws to an end, it would not be complete without our paying tribute to our deceased alumni, faculty, staff and students. We hope you will come out to the University Memorial Chapel on Sunday at 11 a.m., as we light a candle in their memory. During the annual service, there is always a powerful message, and we are always joined by the world-renowned Morgan State University Choir, all to let the family members and friends of the deceased know how much their loved ones are missed and how much they each meant to us, their Morgan family. Again, I encourage you to come early, as the Memorial Chapel is always filled to capacity for this service. We look forward to seeing you at Homecoming, and we bid you safe travels, whether you’re coming from in-state, out-of-state or just around the corner. Remember, Homecoming won’t be Homecoming without you!
