Student Sucess Tips Introduced

‘Topping off’ Tyler Hall, our new home The “topping off” ceremony for Tyler Hall—future home of the offices of Enrollment Management and Student Success: Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Student Success and Retention, CASA and more – was held in January. Staffers signed names on the steel beam – the highest one in the building – then watched as it was hoisted into place. This $90-million, five-floor facility will be completed in summer 2020.

The Office of Student Success and Retention’s Financial Literacy Program provides students with the knowledge and skills they will need to be financially successful. The program partners with PNC Bank to provide financial literacy workshops for students at Morgan State University every semester. The Financial Literacy program kicked off the Spring 2019 semester with an interactive workshop on Budgeting and Money Management. Students who attended the workshop had the opportunity to win Mogan gear and shared their personal money managing experiences at the university.

TAU SIGMA NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The eighth annual induction ceremony of the Delta Gamma Chapter of Tau Sigma National Honor Society was held in the University Student Center Theater on April 29. The keynote speaker was Keisha Campbell, University Registrar, who was also inducted as an honorary member. Campbell spoke to the heart of the organization’s national mission:

“Tau Sigma is an academic honor society designed specifically to recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students.”

Transfer Professional Day The annual University System of Maryland Transfer Professionals’ Day was held May 3 at Bowie State University and was wellattended by EMASS constituents. The day consisted of relevant topics and presentations such as Transfer Students: Patterns of Enrollment and Success presented by Laura Walker, Institutional Data Analyst, USM, and a presentation by Kori Smith, USM Associate Director of Articulation and Academic Services in tandem with Marcus Harrington, Associate Director of IT Development, USM on ARTSYS Upgrades Development. Breakout

session topics included a presentation by Glenda Lindsey and Lurline Whittaker, Morgan State University, on the challenges and resilience of transfer students.

Morgan attendees at the one-day conference included Rhonda Shields and Tamera Farrar (Office of the Registrar), Jacquelyn Demps (Office of Undergraduate Admission and Recruitment), Adrienne Karasik and Stephanie Williams (Office of Transfer Student Programming).

SYE Ambassadors More than 10 students from the 2018-2019 cohort of second year students have volunteered to serve as SYE Ambassadors for the incoming 20192020 cohort of SYE students. Each ambassador will represent the college of their major.

Their involvement in their colleges as well as their relationships with faculty, staff, and other students will help promote experiential learning opportunities. In addition, this group conveys the importance of exploring and engaging in out-ofclassroom experiences to their peers.

SYE Coaches The five professional advisors under the Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA) will serve as the SYE Coaches for the new cohort of second year students. These coaches will be valuable in guiding students through the SYE experience process of exploring, engaging, and reflecting. Beginning next fall, SYE Coaches will be listed under the student’s network in Starfish. Each advisor will be assigned to at least one school.

Lumina website features SYE blog Lumina Foundation published a blog by Brenda James, director of the Center for Academic Success and Achievement, on the Second Year Experience. Here are some excerpts: In launching a Second-Year Experience program at Morgan State University this year, we ran headlong into a tough obstacle: ‘sophomore slump.’ But with help from the students themselves, we worked through that challenge and many others. Students are participating, exploring new fields, and finding themselves.

The Second Year Experience (SYE) is designed to engage all students returning to Morgan State for their second year in out-ofclassroom, experiential learning opportunities, with the goal of enhancing career readiness skills. By learning through internships, job shadowing, campus-to-career field trips, and study abroad, students will achieve the “soft skills” that today’s employers require. These include communication, self-motivation, leadership, responsibility, teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking, flexibility, negotiation and conflict, and time management.

We’re just getting started at this. And though we are far from reaching our goal of 100 percent (we’re at 10 percent now) we are making good progress and helping our students succeed.

One student shared these insights on what he learned and experienced in the new program.

“This trip helped me because I am not very active on campus. This is basically the first thing I have done dealing with Morgan that wasn’t homecoming. I believe it sort of brought me a little closer to my class. I used my listening and learning skills, and many of the things I heard today I never knew of…it was really nice to learn more about the history of where I am from.

This Second Year Experience has given me some more knowledge, and the field trip has broadened my knowledge on my background as a young black college student at an HBCU. It is important to know where I came from. This motivated me to continue to pursue my degree at Morgan State University and take advantage of the opportunities I am given. Having learned more about African Americans in Baltimore and the state of Maryland, in general, I have a better sense of self.” – Reginald F., Lewis Museum trip

Scholarly achievements 2013 Graduation Cohort A special congratulations to members of 2013 freshman cohort. Several cohort members graduated in May making the 6 year graduation rate 43.3%, paving the way to increasing the university’s graduation rate of “50 by 25”.

Tyler Scholars The Calvin and Tina Tyler Scholarship provides 10 full tuition scholarships each year to students who graduated from a Baltimore City High School. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA. The goal of the scholarship is to ensure that these students graduate from Morgan debt free.

Ellucian Live!

Learning and Linking: Several members of the Morgan State University team traveled to the Ellucian Live Conference in New Orleans in April of this year to keep their technical skills sharp and learn more about the recent upgrades to our student information system Banner.

The conference is also a great opportunity to connect with colleagues from around the world who are using the same tools and to learn best practices from them. Pictured here are Steven Law, Dorcas Green, Moni Tenabe and EMASS’ own Keisha Campbell.

Office of the Registrar Office of the Registrar has launched the following tools for use in the campus community: • •

Transfer Evaluation System which allows students, faculty, and staff to see the database of course equivalencies.

Acalog - Catalog software which has moved us away from pdf documents to an online catalog tool.

Peggy Horton earned her Bachelor of Arts in Applied Liberal Studies at the December 2018 exercises.

Veterans:

• The Veterans Job Fair expanded tremendously and we added several new vendors. Several students earned jobs on the spot.

Transfer Evaluation and Articulation:

• In partnership with BCCC and CCBC, the Transfer Evaluation and Articulation team applied and has been accepted into the Summer Institute at Governor’s State University.

Professional Development: The University Registrar completed two fellowships: • Leadership Baltimore County 2018 Cohort • Education Policy Fellowship Program 2019 Cohort The Office of the Registrar has launched an internal professional development series. All team members have the opportunity to learn about the various functions within our office for cross training and business continuity purposes. We have also included training on Excel and the Google Platform.

The Registrar Roadshow will kick off after July 1 – we will go on to any office, academic or otherwise, to train people or teams on any functions that our office oversees. A campus training series will be launched this fall.
