NAFEO Honors Morgan Graduate

enator McFadden was born in Philadelphia, Pa., raised in Baltimore, Md., and began his professional career as a teacher at Baltimore’s Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 1968, the year he earned his B.A. degree in geography and history education from Morgan. His skill as an educator quickly became apparent, and he has continued his work in the field since then in various leadership positions in Baltimore City, including: Coordinator of the Educational Opportunity Program for Lake Clifton/Eastern Senior High School; Department Head of Social Studies for Lombard Junior High School and later for Southwestern Senior High School; and Principal of Dunbar Adult Evening School. Sen. McFadden earned his M.S. degree in history and social science from MSU in 1972 and is a facilitator now with the Baltimore City Public School System.

Sen. McFadden’s career in politics started in 1982, when he began five years of service on the Baltimore City Council. He was elected Maryland State Senator from Baltimore’s 45th District in 1995 and continues to serve his constituents in this high position and as President Pro Tem, as Chair of the Baltimore City Delegation, as a member of the Budget and Taxation Committee and in numerous other Senate leadership posts. Sen. McFadden also serves on the Maryland Democratic State Central Committee, as Secretary of the Maryland Democratic Party and on the historically black colleges and universities committee of the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus.

The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO),on the recommendation of the Office of Alumni Relations, honored Charlene Love, ’71, with its Distinguished Alumni Award at NAFEO’s 35th National Conference on Blacks in Higher Education. The event was held in Atlanta, Ga., on April 4. Love started a career in the telecommunications industry more than 24 years ago and has worked for several Bell operating companies, as well as for AT&T. In 1987, she cofounded TCH Consultants, a project/process management and sales training company that she serves as managing consultant. Love is founding president of MSU’s Georgia Alumni Chapter.

whose members contribute $10,000 or more to the University. He has been a member of the Howard L. Cornish Alumni Chapter for many years. In the mid-’80s, Sen. McFadden was a member of the Advisory Committee of Morgan’s Department of Secondary Education. The Morgan State University Alumni Hall of Fame named him to its second class of inductees in October 2000.

In January 2003, he received the Howard L. Cornish Community Service Award at the chapter’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast.

Sen. McFadden serves on the boards of many civic organizations and has received numerous honors for his work in the community. These recognitions have, in turn, brought great honor to his alma mater. He is happily married to his wife, Rachel, and is the proud father of three adult sons. He has been a member of Southern Baptist Church for the past 32 years.

Alumni Day 2009 Morgan State University’s Alumni Day will be held on a Friday, May 15, 2009! This year, all classes ending in “4” and “9,” will celebrate at the 69th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon. The Emeritus Class, 1958 and earlier will also be recognized at this special occasion. In addition, all MSU alumni and friends are invited to the “Welcome Back” reception. The reception will begin at 11:00 a.m., in the lobby of the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom, which is located on the second floor of the University Student Center. The annual luncheon will begin at 12:00 noon. Tickets for the Luncheon are $45 per person and can be purchased by calling the Office of Alumni Relations at (443) 885-3015. Please note that Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Fair Morgan we love thee and hearts at thy name fill with pride! As alumni of the great Morgan State University, we have recited and sung these words many times. And, certainly, our alma mater has been worthy of our adoration and pride.

The Board Members of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association (MSUNAA) join me in inviting you to attend the 69th Annual Alumni Awards and Gloria E. Wayman Class Reunion Luncheon on Friday, May 15, 2009. In addition, we will also formally congratulate and present awards to Maryland State Sen. Nathaniel J. McFadden, Alumnus of the Year; the North Carolina Alumni Chapter, Chapter of the Year; Mrs. Glenda C. Johnson, Special Achievement Award recipient; and Drs. Earl S. and Sheila B. Richardson, Honorary Alumnus and Alumna Award recipients. This luncheon is a wonderful opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones. As usual, the campus will be adorned in its finery to welcome you home.

Please join me in congratulating the Golden Bears and Coach Todd Bozeman for winning the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament. I attended the MEAC tournament and witnessed the personal commitment of each player. And what a wonderful experience and exciting time it was, as the MSU team emerged victorious! Coach Bozeman and the team also made history by being selected to participate in the Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Basketball Tournament this year.

As we celebrate these and other successes, let us not forget that as MSU Alumni, we still must be ever vigilant, and aid our President and the University staff in their efforts to ensure that Morgan receives fair funding and that other schools are not allowed to duplicate our programs. Honorary Alumnus MSU President Dr. Earl S. Richardson Since becoming president of Morgan State University on Nov. 1, 1984, Dr. Earl S. Richardson has steadily and expertly guided the institution from a period of crisis to its current Renaissance. Twenty-five years ago, when he assumed the presidency, Morgan was among the many Historically Black Colleges and Universities suffering from the unintended consequences of racial integration: seeing their traditional financial and human resources drain away to majority white institutions. Faced with declining enrollment, fiscal uncertainty and a deteriorating physical infrastructure, Dr. Richardson employed the knowledge he had gained as a student and 19-year practitioner of higher education administration — and, most important, his bone-deep commitment to improving the lives of the educationally underserved — to strengthen the University.

Today, Morgan is harvesting the fruits of his successful strategy, including: great advancements in sci-

ence, engineering and increased focus on learning; a flowering of the fine and performing arts; promotion of humanism and the humanitarian spirit, and an emphasis on individual achievement.

Dr. Richardson received his B.A. in social science from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (formerly Maryland State College) and his M.S. and Ed.D. in education administration from the University of Pennsylvania.

He is a life member of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association and a frequent financial contributor to the University. On April 13, 2005, the Morgan community established the Earl S. Richardson Endowed Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving undergraduate and graduate students at Morgan, in recognition of the great emphasis Dr. Richardson has placed on need-based financial support for students to complete college.

Honorary Alumna Dr. Sheila B. Richardson Dr. Sheila Bunting Richardson, life member of the MSU National Alumni Association, has spent nearly all of her professional career helping people in need. After earning her B.S. in English from Lincoln University in 1971 and her M.Ed. in guidance and counseling the next year from Alabama State University, she took a position as Assistant Director of Placement and Cooperative Education at Lincoln, advising students on career and vocational matters, in addition to handling administrative duties. For the next 13 years, she served academic institutions in various capacities, including Director of Cooperative Education, Counselor and part-time lecturer at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Community Liaison and Information Coordinator at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP). In 1998, she received her Ph.D. in human development education from UMCP, with a minor in coun-

seling and student personnel.

The next year, she was licensed as a Clinical Professional Counselor by the state of Maryland.

Since 2000, Dr. Richardson has been president of Community Services and Research Center, Inc., a not-forprofit organization in Somerset County, Md., that provides technical assistance to community organizations, manages mentoring programs for youth and provides smoking cessation programs, all on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Dr. Richardson frequently joins her husband — MSU President Dr. Earl S. Richardson — and their son, Eric, at functions in support of the University. Drs. Sheila and Earl Richardson see their work as interrelated: The young people she serves on Maryland’s Eastern Shore are the same people MSU’s President has in mind as he fights for more resources for Morgan.

Members of MSU’s Philadelphia Alumni Chapter presented a $5,000 check to University President Dr. Earl S. Richardson in December, to complete the chapter’s 2008 financial commitment to the Morgan State University Foundation. The presentation took place after the University’s Annual Winter Concert.

The Chapter also pledged $50,000 to support the

Earl S. Richardson Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The Philadelphia Chapter is celebrating its 50th year in 2009. The chapter contributes annually to its Francis C. Walker Scholarship Fund, which provides grants to Morgan students from the Philadelphia area.

The chapter also maintains the Philadelphia Chapter Endowment Fund.

Special Achievement Award Recipient Glenda C. Johnson, Educator, Administrator Glenda Carter Johnson, ’71 and ’97, is this year’s recipient of the Special Achievement Award from the Morgan State University National Alumni Association.

Mrs. Johnson grew up in Catonsville, Md., and received her Bachelor of Science degree in home economics education and her master’s degree in administration and supervision from MSU. While attending the University, she demonstrated strong leadership abilities and served as the executive secretary of the Spokesman and the Promethean in the same year. She was a member of the Home Economics Club and the University Choir.

Since graduating from Morgan, Mrs. Johnson has had a distinguished, 37-year career as a teacher, then administrator in the Baltimore County (Md.) Public Schools. Mrs. Johnson has always enjoyed working with teenagers and teaching them the importance of academic success. She was instrumental in starting a program at Catonsville High School that encouraged minority students to pursue degrees in higher education. Over the years, she has influenced and counseled many students to attend Morgan State University, and many of those students have graduated from Morgan to pursue careers in teaching.

Mrs. Johnson is a longtime member of the Morgan State University Howard County Alumni Chapter and has been a Life Member of the MSU National Alumni Association for more than 25 years. She has supported Morgan State University in many ways. Her chapter’s College Bound Program led to a partnership between the Howard County Board of Education and Morgan State University that enabled 23 Morgan students to do their practice teaching assignments in Howard County.

Thirteen of those graduates were hired as full-time teachers. She has participated in college fairs and helped organize campus tours at Morgan. She served on the membership committee that encourages Morgan alumni to become active members of the MSU National Alumni Association. She has attended many hearings in Annapolis about funding for new buildings and educational programs at the University. She has also contributed financially to a variety of University projects, among them, the Capital Fundraising Campaign, Homecoming Gala, Dr. Richardson’s Honor Banquet and Former Presidential Scholarship Ball.

Mrs. Johnson has been happily married to Lawrence “Phil” Johnson, MSU Class of 1973, for 36 years. The couple reside in Columbia, Md., and are the proud parents of Marian Johnson Bromell, also a Morgan graduate.

Phillip L. Brown, ’47, had his 100th birthday on Jan. 16, 2009 and celebrated the occasion with an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He received his bachelor’s degree in social studies from Morgan State University.

The Rev. Kenneth I. Clarke, Sr., ’80, received his Doctor of Ministry degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.

The Rev. Dr. Clarke is director of Cornell United Religious Work, which offers programs of worship, study and social life at Cornell University, as well as opportunities for students to engage in interfaith dialogue.

The D.C. Federation of Citizen Associations honored Morgan’s 1977 class president, Rodney Foxworth, with its 2008 Civic Association President of the Year Award, at the organization’s Annual Luncheon at the DC Navy Yard last October.

Foxworth received the award for his service to the Lamond-Riggs Citizen’s Association, as president during the past three years and as vice president during the year preceding. Foxworth remains a strong supporter of Morgan and chaired the Class of ’77 Reunion Committee in 2007.

Walter Gill, Ph.D., ’60, has published his third book, Teaching in Urban America: A Formula for Change. Dr. Gill spent 22 years as a university administrator and professor and 24 years teaching and counseling children and youth. Since leaving a tenured position at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and returning to Baltimore in 1991, Dr. Gill has distinguished himself working with at-risk youth, delinquent males and African-American middle school males.

Rashida Govan, ’97, has been awarded a Marcus B. Christian Scholarship grant to pursue her Ph.D. in educational leadership and administration at the University of New Orleans, in Louisiana. The scholarship, whose requirements included a 3.25 master’s GPA, will cover Govan’s tuition as she conducts research on college access issues.

Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, Ph.D., ’84, is the new Vice President for Student Affairs at Baltimore City Community College in Baltimore, Md. A veteran college administrator, Dr. Harvey-Smith has a national reputation for developing effective

academic and student development programs and has authored three books. She earned her Ph.D. in counseling and personnel services from the University of Maryland, College Park and an M.S.Education in guidance and counseling from The Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Harvey-Smith received a B.S. in business administration from Morgan State University.

Marsha Evans Holmes, ’71, was named one of the five founding inductees of the North Florida HBCU Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame was established in 2008 by a consortium of HBCU alumni chapters to honor outstanding achievement by Historically Black College and University alumni living and working in North Florida.

Cindy Hooper, ’93, has signed a contract to publish her book, Conflict: The New Dilemma of Race and Gender Politics. Hooper is one of the founding members of The National Organization for AfricanAmerican Women (www.noaw.org) in Washington, D.C. During the inauguration of President Barack Obama, Hooper spoke on Radio France about the impact on African-American women in the U.S. of having the first African-American First Lady.

The Rev. Marjorie Gillis Mercer, ’90, has earned her Master of Education degree in rehabilitation counseling from Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md. Upon receiving her degree, she also was inducted into the Psi Chi Honor Society and the Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society. She plans to begin work on a doctorate degree in education in the fall. The Rev. Mercer is a former Secretary in MSU’s Alumni Affairs Office. She has worked in several other capacities, including counselor for the Baltimore City Department of Social Services and head of her own community center and church.

Ron Owens, ’61, received the American Advertising Federation’s 2008 Pioneer of Diversity Award at the federation’s Diversity Achievement Awards Program in New York last fall. Owens began his career in advertising in the early ’70s and has played a part in many popular advertising and marketing campaigns, including the U.S. Army’s “Be All

That You Can Be” recruitment effort. Owens has been featured in FORBES magazine and is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Fannie B. Poulson, ’54, is continuing her community service apace. The former MSU business education major retired from the Baltimore City Public Schools as a counselor at Forest Park Senior High School. She now teaches Bible courses at Macedonia Baptist Church in Baltimore and serves the community through Iota Phi Lambda Sorority and the top ladies of Destination One. Aïday Aliyah Rasheed, ’08, was one of 150 AmeriCorps members chosen to march in the Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C., in January, after the swearing-in of President Barack Obama.

Rasheed served as an AmeriCorps member during the summer of 2006, in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins National Center for Summer Learning: Teach Baltimore Program. After graduating from Morgan, she took a position as a full-time AmeriCorps member with the Creative Alliance, in conjunction with the Maryland Institute College of Art Community Art Corps Program.

Mattie M. Roter, ’60, has been honored as “Volunteer of the Month” by the Greater YMCA of Greater New York. After retiring from the New York City Board of Education in 1994, Roter served as Country Director for the Peace Corps in Belize from 1994 to 1999. She now works in numerous volunteer positions including: the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA in New York; Rhoda Williams, Assemblywoman for District 42 in Brooklyn; music librarian for FlatbushTomkins Congregational Church in Brooklyn; MakeA-Wish Foundation, and as a Big Apple Greeter.

Tawana Ford Sabbath, Ph.D., ’69, and husband Walter are in their 16th year as owners of Walter E. Sabbath, Jr. Funeral Service, in Philadelphia, Pa. Mrs. Sabbath’s social work training and work experience enable the couple to provide bereavement counseling as well as resource identification for their clients.

Lt. Col. Michele Thompson-Shoats, ’89, U.S. Army, became commander of the 505th Quartermaster Battalion (Petroleum) in Okinawa, Japan, in July. In this position, she leads a work force of 175 personnel, including 64 soldiers and some Japanese civilians. A native of Baltimore, Thompson-Shoats distinguished herself as a military graduate of Morgan State University’s Reserve Officers Training Corps. She graduated,

N e c r o l o g y cum laude, from MSU with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management and later earned an M.B.A. in marketing from Pennsylvania State University. She has earned numerous honors for her work, including a Bronze Star, a Meritorious Service Medal and an Army Commendation Medal.

Alvin D. “Ajay” Thornton, ’81, has been formally promoted to the U.S. government’s Senior Executive Service (SES). Thornton is the newly appointed Director of Engineering for the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center, in Edgewood, Md., part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command. Members of the SES serve in key positions just below top presidential appointees and are the major link between the appointees and the federal work force. SES members within the Department of Defense are considered the equivalent of general officers.

Joseph A. Whittaker, Ph.D., ’82, Dean of the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences and Professor of Biology at Morgan State University, has been elected the 73rd President of Sigma Xi. He will serve as the organization’s President-elect beginning July 1. Sigma Xi is an international honor society of research scientists and engineers with 500 chapters at colleges and universities, government laboratories and industry research centers. More than 200 Sigma Xi members have received the Nobel Prize.

American Literary Press has published a new Five Star Special Edition of A Promise for All Seasons, a book written by Charles Williams, ’96, and based on his life and career. Now a real estate entrepreneur living in Maryland, Williams was born in Arkansas, moved to Chicago as a teen, served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army in Korea and earned a B.A. in sociology from Morgan.

Robert L. Williams Jr., M.D., ’77, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine, in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Williams received his B.S. degree in chemistry, cum laude, from Morgan, his M.P.H. in epidemiology from Emory University and his M.D. from MeHarry Medical College.

C H A PT E R A N D C L A S S N E WS Orange & Blue Event Aids Students, Community More than 200 guests gathered for the Third Annual Blue and Orange Dinner Dance, the signature fundraiser for the Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter (MSUSMAC). Members of MSUSMAC, family, friends and community leaders dined, danced and celebrated at this special occasion. The event was held on Sept. 12, 2008 at the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center, in Waldorf, Md., and thanks to the contributions and support of attendees, patrons and sponsors, it was a great success.

Each year, MSUSMAC selects Morgan State University graduates residing in Southern Maryland to be recognized and honored at the Blue and Orange Dinner Dance for their years of contributions and service to their communities. The 2008 honorees and award recipients were: community activist Girard W. Myers, ’48; educator Muriel Steward Sweatt, ’47; educator Dr. Janice Talbert Walthour, ’68 and ’79; author and Tuskegee Airman Le Roy Battle, ’50, and past MSUSMA Chapter President Wayne Barnes, ’71 and ’81.

Pershing Rifles to Host Golf Tournament The Pershing Rifles Alumni Chapter will hold its Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Forest Park Golf Course in Baltimore, Md. The course is located at 2900 Hillsdale Rd., and the cost of the event is $75 per player/$300 per team. Tee-off will be 8:00 a.m.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the chapter’s annual scholarship drive and outreach programs.

Players will enjoy a complete program of special events; 18 holes of golf, including carts; lunch; a grab

bag for each player; an awards banquet, and chances to win prizes, including a cruise, vacation packages to Orlando, Las Vegas and Hawaii, tickets to pro sports events and $50,000!

Philadelphia Chapter Celebrates 50th Anniversary The year 2009 marks a special time in the history of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Morgan State University Alumni Association. Charles Wragg established the Chapter in the early 1950s, but after a brief period of inactivity, the chapter was reactivated in 1959 by Anita b. Poindexter.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary, the Chapter has planned a series of celebrations. Please refer to the MSU Alumni Calendar of Events for these activities.

Omegas Celebrate 85th Year at Morgan This past fall, Nov. 7–9, the Alumni Brothers of Pi Chapter celebrated their 85th year in the Morgan community.

Among the Pi Chapter Brothers honored posthumously were Joe Black (Pi 1947) and J. Haywood Harrison (Pi 1950). Other honorees included Leroy Battle (Pi 1948), George K. McKinney (Pi 1954), Earl G. Graves, Sr. (Pi 1954), Lonnie Liston Smith (Pi 1958), Hughlyn F. Fierce (Pi 1959), Water Amprey (Pi 1963), Samuel Art Williams (Pi 1967), Theodore “TC” Newman (Pi 1970), William R. Roberts (Pi 1974) and Peter C. Harvey (Pi 1976).

The celebration generated more than $10,000 for the Judge Linwood G. Koger, Sr. Founder’s Memorial Scholarship, which was established in the Morgan State University Foundation in 2003.

Morgan State University’s Men’s Basketball Team made two dreams real in 2009, winning its first MidEastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament Championship in 32 years and moving on to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time ever.

The Golden Bears, led by Head Coach Todd Bozeman, entered the MEAC Tournament in WinstonSalem, N.C., as the regular season champs and No. 1 seed, with a 13-3 conference record. The Bears rolled past Florida A&M University in the quarterfinals, took a hard-fought win from No. 5 seed Coppin State University in the semis then faced the Norfolk State University Spartans in the finals. The Bears overcame a shaky start with an 18-point run before the half then fought off a late rally by the Spartans to earn an 83-69 win. Junior guard Reggie Holmes of MSU scored a team-high 20 points in the game and was named the

tournament’s outstanding player.

The Bears’ victory in the MEAC Tournament earned them Morgan’s first trip to the NCAAs, as the No. 15 seed facing the No. 2-seeded University of Oklahoma Sooners, in Kansas City, Mo. In that opening round game, the Sooners, led by Blake Griffin, the nation’s top rebounder and player of the year favorite, bested the Bears 82-54.

Coach Bozeman was selected as the 2009 MEAC Coach of the Year and was chosen by a panel of his fellow NCAA coaches as winner of the 2009 Hugh Durham Award.

McIver Makes MEAC Hall of Fame Joseph McIver, ’75, Assistant Athletic Director at Morgan State University, has been enshrined in the 2009 Hall of Fame Class of the MidEastern Athletic Conference.

The ceremony took place during Morgan’s championship run at the 2009 MEAC Basketball Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. McIver began his professional career as Morgan’s Sports Information Director in 1975. He was inducted into the Morgan State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.

Recent Hire Boosts Alumni Relations Milton Hawkins, ’85, has joined Morgan State University’s Alumni Relations Office as an Alumni Officer. He is responsible for strengthening and supporting all MSU Alumni chapters, finding lost alumni and bringing alumni back to the campus with the goal of getting them involved and providing support to the University. “Mr. Hawkins is a real asset to the Alumni Relations Office,” says MSU Alumni Relations Director Joyce A. Brown. “He has already spearheaded several networking events that brought alumni back to the University.” Hawkins earned his M.B.A. in marketing from Morgan.

Homecoming 2009 Host Hotel The Sheraton Baltimore North in Towson, Md., has been confirmed as this year’s Homecoming Host Hotel. Rooms are available for Friday, Oct. 9 through Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009. The discounted price for all MSU alumni and friends is $147.06 per room, per night, which includes Maryland State and hotel occupancy taxes. To receive the discounted rate, you must specify that you are calling to make reservations for the “Morgan State University Homecoming Group.” This group rate is for single, double, triple or quad room accommodations.

Bears Return to Urban League Football Classic MSU is back in the Classic! The Golden Bears will face the Winston-Salem State University Rams on Saturday, Sept. 19 in the New York Urban League’s 39th Annual Football Classic. The game takes place at Giants Stadium in The Meadowlands, N.J. Kickoff is 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $25–75 and go on sale May 1 at the Ticketmaster office on Morgan’s campus and Ticketmaster locations everywhere.
