Alumnus of the Year

NAFEO Honors Morgan Graduate

enator McFadden was born in Philadelphia, Pa., raised in Baltimore, Md., and began his professional career as a teacher at Baltimore’s Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 1968, the year he earned his B.A. degree in geography and history education from Morgan. His skill as an educator quickly became apparent, and he has continued his work in the field since then in various leadership positions in Baltimore City, including: Coordinator of the Educational Opportunity Program for Lake Clifton/Eastern Senior High School; Department Head of Social Studies for Lombard Junior High School and later for Southwestern Senior High School; and Principal of Dunbar Adult Evening School. Sen. McFadden earned his M.S. degree in history and social science from MSU in 1972 and is a facilitator now with the Baltimore City Public School System. Sen. McFadden’s career in politics started in 1982, when he began five years of service on the Baltimore City Council. He was elected Maryland State Senator from Baltimore’s 45th District in 1995 and continues to serve his constituents in this high position and as President Pro Tem, as Chair of the Baltimore City Delegation, as a member of the Budget and Taxation Committee and in numerous other Senate leadership posts. Sen. McFadden also serves on the Maryland Democratic State Central Committee, as Secretary of the Maryland Democratic Party and on the historically black colleges and universities committee of the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus. A longtime, generous contributor of time, talent and treasure to Morgan, Sen. McFadden is a Life Member of the MSU National Alumni Association and a member of the 1867 Club —

The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO),on the recommendation of the Office of Alumni Relations, honored Charlene Love, ’71, with its Distinguished Alumni Award at NAFEO’s 35th National Conference on Blacks in Higher Education. The event was held in Atlanta, Ga., on April 4. Love started a career in the telecommunications industry more than 24 years ago and has worked for several Bell operating companies, as well as for AT&T. In 1987, she cofounded TCH Consultants, a project/process management and sales training company that she serves as managing consultant. Love is founding president of MSU’s Georgia Alumni Chapter.

whose members contribute $10,000 or more to the University. He has been a member of the Howard L. Cornish Alumni Chapter for many years. In the mid-’80s, Sen. McFadden was a member of the Advisory Committee of Morgan’s Department of Secondary Education. The Morgan State University Alumni Hall of Fame named him to its second class of inductees in October 2000. In January 2003, he received the Howard L. Cornish Community Service Award at the chapter’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast. Sen. McFadden serves on the boards of many civic organizations and has received numerous honors for his work in the community. These recognitions have, in turn, brought great honor to his alma mater. He is happily married to his wife, Rachel, and is the proud father of three adult sons. He has been a member of Southern Baptist Church for the past 32 years.

Alumni Day 2009 Morgan State University’s Alumni Day will be held on a Friday, May 15, 2009! This year, all classes ending in “4” and “9,” will celebrate at the 69th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon. The Emeritus Class, 1958 and earlier will also be recognized at this special occasion. In addition, all MSU alumni and friends are invited to the “Welcome Back” reception. The reception will begin at 11:00 a.m., in the lobby of the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom, which is located on the second floor of the University Student Center. The annual luncheon will begin at 12:00 noon. Tickets for the Luncheon are $45 per person and can be purchased by calling the Office of Alumni Relations at (443) 885-3015. Please note that Commencement will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you on Friday, May 15th!
