Alumnus of the Year Wilbert L. Walker An MSU Hall of Famer’s Long History of Giving He is the author of two memoirs, but Wilbert L. Walker, Morgan State University Class of 1950, has contributed time, talent and treasure to his alma mater that could easily fill a third. For this reason, the MSU National Alumni Association was proud to announce his selection as its 2007 Alumnus of the Year.

About his contributions to MSU, Mr. Walker says, “Morgan does a good job educating young people, and it has a significant need for money to do so… I can’t think of a better use for the money.”

A frequent contributor to Morgan State University, he established the Louis H Walker Endowed Memorial Band Scholarship, in honor of his late brother. He also established the Grace and Wilbert Walker Endowed Social Work Scholarship. His contribution of $50,000 was matched by the State of Maryland, creating two Endowed Scholarships valued at $100,000 towards the renovation of the Alumni House on the University’s campus. In recognition of his generous gift to Morgan State University, the Alumni House’s entrance foyer was named for him and his late wife, Grace Walker.

This year’s annual Alumni Day will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2007 in the University Student Center. This year, for the first time, we will have a book signing by some of our alumni authors before our Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon.

This event will allow us to showcase the literary prowess of some of our finest.

The book signing will take place in the University Student Center, Room 316, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Following the book signing, there will be a reception from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The luncheon will start immediately after the reception at 12 noon in the Tyler Ballroom. The cost for the luncheon is $40.00 per person. Please call the Alumni Relations Office at (443) 885-3015 to purchase tickets, or for more information. Mailers were sent to members of the graduating classes ending in “2” and “7.”

Mr. Walker has led a remarkable life of achievement. Born in Durham, N.C., in 1922, he attended public schools in Baltimore, where his family moved in 1929. After graduating from high school, he was drafted into the Navy, served in WWII, returned to Baltimore two years later and joined the ROTC program at Morgan State. He left with a bachelor’s degree with honors in economics as the University’s first distinguished military graduate and returned to active duty with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Thrice-decorated for his service in Korea, he later was inducted into Morgan State’s ROTC Hall of Fame.

Dr. Richardson’s State of the University address was one of the main highlights of past Alumni Day Business Meetings. Beginning in 2005, because of the wealth of information that he shares, he’s delivered his address during the Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon instead. For this reason, we have decided to cancel our Alumni Day Business Meeting.

Greetings, Alumni and Friends:

With spring comes inspiration for the young and young at heart. And nowhere is this more true than on the campus of Morgan State University.

This year, as last, there is much for Morgan students to be encouraged about, as they look forward to a strong finish of their academic year or, for seniors, Commencement and the beginning of their journey in the world of their specialty and beyond. There is the sight of new buildings under construction, new programs in the student handbook and new organizations committed to partnering with the University. Most important, there is the knowledge our students have that they are not struggling alone, that they have the solid support of the Morgan State alumni who struggled before them and have made it.

For those of us on the “other side,” Morgan State alumni, today’s students are inspiration themselves. This issue of the Alumni News, with its stories of professional success and generosity to alma mater, is dedicated to those elders who know giving back is what keeps us young!

After his many years as a leader in academia and the broader community, people have become used to thinking of Dr. Kenneth Mosely as a success story. But there was a time when his plotline was not so clear.

“I had a decent GPA when I graduated from high school, but I didn’t have the test scores I needed for Morgan,” he recalls.“I wound up having to take remedial math, remedial reading and remedial English. These were new programs that (MSU) President (Martin D.) Jenkins had started. I had to take these classes five days a week. I was a little embarrassed by that, but they allowed me to catch up. When I did go on to the ROTC program, my writing and speaking skills had really improved.”

ROTC Alumni Association Named 2007 Chapter of the Year The Morgan State University ROTC Alumni Association has brought honor and positive visibility to MSU on the national and world stages since 1996. Now the chapter that came from that association stands in the spotlight of honor itself, as the MSU National Alumni Association’s selection as 2007 Chapter of the Year.

This year’s honoree was chartered as the MSU ROTC Alumni Chapter in October 2004. The chapter consists primarily of former Morgan State University and Coppin State University (MSU/CSU) students who received their military commissions through the U.S. Army ROTC Program and are now retired military officers or are serving on active duty. Chapter members include veterans of World War II, the Korean War

and the Vietnam War, as well as servicemen and servicewomen now participating in this country’s latest conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Through the MSU/CSU ROTC Program, Morgan State has produced more African-American general officers in the U.S. Army than any other historically black college or university, and now has as an alumnus who is the highest-ranking AfricanAmerican general officer serving on active duty in the Army: Gen. William “Kip”Ward, a chapter member.

The MSU ROTC Alumni Chapter has given significant support to Morgan State University, Coppin State University, the African-American community and the nation. Its positive activities have influenced numerous young men and women to become students at Morgan State and productive members of our society. Over the past seven years, the chapter has raised more than $23,000 to support its programs. Chapter members have pledged or contributed more than $77,000 to the MSU Capital Campaign. The chapter’s ROTC Summer Camp initiative provides funds to support training, while the ROTC Emergency Fund it established helps students with financial difficulties to stay in school. Being selected as 2007 Chapter of the Year is an honor it richly deserves.

After catching up, young Mosely moved to the front. He cocaptained Morgan State’s CIAA championship swim teams in 1969 and 1970. At graduation in 1971, he received his B.S. in physical education and was recognized as a distinguished military student. He began his career as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, which gave him additional leadership, organizational and human relations skills. From there, he went on to Kansas State University, where he earned an M.S. in physical education, and to Indiana University, where he became the first African American to earn a doctorate in physical education with an emphasis in adapted physical education.

P.E.D. in hand, Dr. Mosely began work at South Carolina State University in 1976. He retired in 2005 as a full professor and chair of the Department of Health and Physical Education. During his tenure at SCSU, Dr. Mosely served 11 years as project director of the National Youth Sports Program and the USDA Summer Feeding Program and worked with many other community service organizations as a volunteer. He has authored more than 20 articles, presented more than 20 professional papers and written proposals for 13 funded grants totaling more than $850,000.

“I am extremely honored to have received this (Special Achievement) award,” says Dr. Mosely, now a charter member of the South Atlantic Region MSU Alumni chapter, and actively involved with the Chapter’s fundraising activities, a member of the Varsity M Club and a life member of the MSU National Alumni Association. “I attribute much of my success to what Morgan did for me between 1966 and 1970.”

Roberta Palm Bradley, ’69, has been named superintendent of Seattle City Light in Seattle, WA. In her new job, Ms. Bradley is responsible for daily operations of the nation’s seventh-largest municipal utility, which serves 332,000 customers and has annual revenue of $300 million.

H. Keith Moo-Young, Ph.D., ’91, has been named dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology at California State University, Los Angeles. As dean, Dr. Moo-Young, a nationally recognized scholar in environmental engineering, now directs five departments with 80 faculty and 1,700 students at Cal State L.A. He received his B.S. from Morgan in civil engineering, with valedictorian honors.

Sharon Green Middleton, ’76, has been sworn in as sixth district councilwoman for the Baltimore City Council, Baltimore, MD. Ms. Middleton was selected to fill the seat left vacant when Councilwoman Stephanie C. Rawlings-Blake became council president. Ms. Middleton will run for the seat in the city’s fall elections.

Runako Kumbula, ’96, has been promoted to government fraud prosecutor for the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia. Her new position gives her responsibility for prosecuting election, government employee and professional licensing fraud.

Erica Fry Cryor, ’69, has joined the division of Institutional Advancement at MSU as director of Development. Cryor has nearly 30 years of experience in professional and community organizations including the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the University of Maryland School of Social Work, Delta Sigma Theta, Links Inc., Turnaround, Inc., and the Baltimore City School for the Performing Arts. She is married to alumnus Michael Cryor, ’68, president of the Cryor Group.

Hester Jackson-Chase, ’91 and ’99, held a book signing for her new work, Whispering Words, at Soper Library in February. A business administration major, she also received her MBA from Morgan in 1999.

Angela Tripp, Ed.D., ’06, has joined the Immaculata University College of LifeLong Learning as Director of Enrollment Management.

Carleen Ramlochansingh, ’06, fought off fierce competition to take the first runner-up spot in the 10th Annual Miss Trinidad and Tobago New York Pageant. Ms. Ramlochansingh, now employed with the Municipal Credit Union of New York in Manhattan, was the 2005–06 student regent at Morgan and received her B.S. in marketing.

Joseph E. Heyward, ’71, has received an honorary degree from Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C. Mr. Heyward concluded his 32-year career at Francis Marion as vice president for student affairs.

He received his master’s degree from MSU in mathematics.

Kevin Cobb, ’93, has published a 154-page manual entitled Crash Course to Becoming a Mobile Notary Signing Agent. The manual is available for download at www.settlementman.com for an introductory price of $47.

Rev. Dr. William H. Curtis, ’89, senior pastor of the 7,100-member Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, PA, has been elected president of the Hampton University Ministers’ Conference, the largest meeting of interdenominational African-American clergy in the world. Rev. Dr. Curtis is also coauthor of a new book, The Gospel Remix: Reaching the Hip Hop Generation, published by Judson Press.

Natasha Benita-Nicole Brown, ’01, was awarded an M.S. in organizational development and leadership from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in July 2006.

Ralph Cooke, ’71, has retired from the Department of Homeland Security after 40 years of service to the federal government.

Bryant L. Young, ’97, has joined the Wilmington, DE based law firm Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz LLP as a partner practicing in intellectual property. He received his B.S. summa cum laude in chemistry from MSU. Joseph Whittaker, Ph.D., ’82, became dean of Morgan State University’s School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences in August. He received his B.S. in biology from MSU.

Joseph Dorsey, ’04, has joined the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials as project engineer for the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program. His bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University is in civil engineering.

Allen R. Taylor, ’96, president and CEO of Taylor Made Transportation Services, Inc., received a 2006 Positive People Outstanding Entrepreneur award from The Baltimore Times newspaper in Baltimore, MD. Mr. Taylor was honored for his selfless work on behalf of others and his commitment to positive living.

Tammi Fleming, ’06, Administrative Assistant for Alumni Relations, was recently inducted into the Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society for students in the human sciences.

Bert J. Hash Jr., ’70, president and CEO of Municipal Employees Credit Union of Baltimore, Inc. (MECU) has been named CEO of the Year by Credit Union Times. Mr. Hash received his B.S. in business administration from MSU and was Alumnus of the Year in 1999.

The Hon. Nathaniel J. McFadden, ’68 and ’72, has been elected president pro tem of the Maryland State Senate. Sen. McFadden represents Maryland’s 45th Legislative District.

Rachel Irving, ’05, has become communications assistant in the MSU Office of Public Relations and Communications. Ms. Irving has a B.A. in speech communications and graduated summa cum laude. While at Morgan, she was captain of the University’s speech and debate team, a resident advisor of HarperTubman dormitory, and tutored Spanish. Ms. Irving is a recipient of the William J. Fulbright Scholarship grant and taught English in South Korea.

Arnold Henry, Jr. is a third year medical student at Meharry Medical College. Raised in Baltimore, MD, he overcame a life of many challenges and earned a bachelors degree in biology from MSU. Donyue Kevin Turner, ’93, is the founding member of Colt Express Transportation. Since its inception in March of 1998, Colt Express Transportation has generated over $7 million in revenue.

School Teacher from Charles County Celebrates 101 Years

Pearl Furey, ’52, Charter and current member of the Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter, turned 101 on Feb. 2 and celebrated her birthday with family, friends, former students and MSU alumni on Feb. 3 at the Randolph Furey American Legion Post #170 in Indian Head, MD. Mrs. Furey received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from MSU and taught for more than 40 years in the Charles County, MD, public schools before retiring.

Former Philadelphia Alumna Celebrates 90 Years Kay Smith, ’39

The Philadelphia Alumni Chapter of Morgan State University helped MSU graduate Kay Smith, ’39, celebrate her 90th birthday on Feb. 17, with a resolution acknowledging the beloved mom for her many contributions to the chapter, the University and other civic, social and community organizations. The guest of honor was joined by family, close friends and residents of her building for the afternoon of fellowship, food and performance on a gorgeous day near the San Francisco Bay.

Southern Maryland Dinner Dance Draws 250 The Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter, which serves Charles, St. Mary’s, Calvert and Southern Prince George’s Counties, held its first annual Blue and Orange Dinner Dance on Sept. 16 at the Waldorf Jaycees in Waldorf, MD. More than 250 alumni and friends gathered to raise scholarship funds for students entering Morgan State University as freshmen.

During the evening of dining and dancing, alumna Pearl Furey, 100, was honored as the oldest alumnus, and the Rev. Dr. George DeFord was honored as the chapter’s first president and this year’s Distinguished Alumnus.

The Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter was chartered during Alumni Day 2005 and now has more than 45 members. Under the leadership of President Wayne Barnes, Committee Chair Victor Watson and many other hard-working alumni members, the annual fundraiser was a huge success. Blue and orange is alive and well in Southern Maryland! The chapter meets on the second Saturday of each month. Class of ’57 Plans 50th Reunion Big expectations and much excitement are in the air for the Class of 1957’s 50th reunion, which will be held during Alumni Weekend, May 18–20. The reunion committees have been meeting for more than two years, and all class members are looking forward to wearing their caps and gowns for the procession into Hughes Stadium during Commencement with the graduating Class of 2007.

The reunion committees are led by Co-chairs Anne Shervington Davis and Sarah Montgomery. Earl Mello is class president, and Vernon Carter is treasurer. Joan Carr Matthews, Mattie Gaines, John S. Wood, Connie Baker, Kenneth Polston and Lee Bostic serve as subcommittee chairs.

The Class of ’57 has led all classes in giving to the Morgan State University Foundation. Class member Earl G. Graves is encouraging his classmates to keep the lead by contributing $1,000 toward scholarships to the Foundation this year. At its 40th reunion, the Class of ’57 presented MSU with a check for $238,000.

Events scheduled for Alumni Weekend include: a Meet and Greet Roaring ’20s Party at the Student Center, Friday, 6:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.; on Saturday, the Alumni Luncheon, a Campus Tour and a Formal Dinner Dance with the sounds of Morgan alumnus Bill Clarke from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight at the Sheraton Baltimore North hotel; and Commencement followed by Class Brunch at the Alumni House on Sunday. The Friday and Saturday night events are open to guests and adult children of class members.

Class of 1976 to Host Jazz for Scholarship Fundraiser The Morgan State University Class of 1976 will present All That Jazz, an evening of cool jazz and heavy hors d’oeuvres on Saturday, April 28 from 8:00 p.m. to 12 midnight at the Helen Roberts Executive Dining Room on the top floor of MSU’s Spencer Complex.

Cornish Chapter Hosts King Scholarship Breakfast

The Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Chapter of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association hosted its 22nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast on Jan. 6 at Martin’s West.

U.S. Army Gen. William “Kip”Ward, deputy commanding general of the U.S. European Command, gave the keynote address. Gen. Ward, a proud 1971 MSU graduate, is the fifth AfricanAmerican promoted to four-star general in the U.S. Army.

More than $25,000 in scholarships and 16 Dell laptop computers were awarded to Morgan students at the breakfast. Howard L. Cornish Awards were presented to: Wesley A. Brown, first African-American Graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy – Drum Major Award; Dr. Irving C. Williams, President /CEO, A.H.E.A.D., Inc. – Humanitarian Award; Jean Robinson, Heaven’s Angels Transitional Home – Community Service Award; Cheryl Y. Hitchcock, MSU Vice President, of Institutional Advancement – Appreciation Award; Cherlyn V. Mitchell, Immediate Past President, HLC – Distinguished Service Award; Traci N. McPhail, HLC – Second Mile Award.

In recognition of his hard work as the King Breakfast cochairman for the past 19 years, Anthony McPhail was surprised by the Brigadier General George Brooks Award, a special recognition named in honor of another hard-working chapter member and former president.

Coach James Phillips Honored with Distinguished Alumni Award

New MSU Assistant Director of Alumni Relations

James Phillips, legendary wrestling coach for MSU, received the Distinguished Alumni Award, during the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament in Raleigh, NC. In addition to this prestigious award, Coach Phillips received a watch and other special gifts from the Athletic department in recognition of his commitment and dedication to the students of MSU Athletics. Coach Phillips retired from the University in December 2004, after serving for more than 30 years as an assistant professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Stephanie M. Chapple, ’93, is Morgan State University’s new assistant director of Alumni Relations. Mrs. Chapple received her B.S. in telecommunications from MSU and brings 11 years of experience in higher education to her new position. At her previous employer, Howard Community College, she held a number of administrative posts, including assistant director of Student Life, and received the Vice President’s Meritorious Service Award.

Mrs. Chapple enjoys working with college students and alumni and maintains a strong commitment to community and family. Mrs. Chapple is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

History Makers Honor MSU Alumnus Earl Graves The HistoryMakers paid tribute to MSU alumnus Earl G. Graves, ’57, at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre recently, for his illustrious business career and philanthropic work. Graves was joined by members of the Morgan State University – Chicago Alumni Chapter for the evening event, which included a reception and one-on-one interview with the honoree conducted by Julian Bond, chairman of the National Board of Directors of the NAACP.

Graves is president and CEO of Earl G. Graves, Ltd., parent corporation of the Earl G. Graves Publishing Company, which publishes Black Enterprise magazine. Since founding Black Enterprise in 1970, Graves has received many honors, including recognition as one of the 10 most outstanding minority businessmen in the country by the President of the United States and the National Award of Excellence for his achievements in minority business enterprise.
