2005 Alumnus of the Year Colonel (Ret.) James Stanley White Morgan State University is honored to recognize Colonel James S.White, a graduate of what was then Morgan State College, class of 1954, as the 2005 Alumnus of the Year. Col. White received a Bachelor of Science degree in health, physical education and recreation. As a student, he was the president of his freshman and sophomore classes, a member of the football team, a company commander in ROTC, and a student worker in the Soper Library. olonel James White, class of 1954 is a life member of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association (MSUNAA); a member of the Varsity M Club; a member of the Philadelphia Chapter of MSUNAA, and a life member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Among his numerous awards, Col. White is the recipient of the 1988 Special Achievement Award of the MSUNAA. He is the 1984 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Philadelphia Chapter, MSUNAA, and he was inducted into the MSU ROTC Hall of Fame in 2002. Colonel (Ret.) James Stanley White

Col. Whites’ philanthropy is as elaborate as his recipient awards list. He offers his time and financial support to many. The Morgan State University Foundation, the Varsity M Club Scholarship Fund; the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, the Boulé Foundation, and the MSUNAA are recipients of his financial support. He is a member of MSU’s Promethean Society and the 1867 Club. He and his wife, Juanita A. Pelzer White (Class of 1955), have established the “Juanita A. Pelzer White Scholarship Fund” to provide financial assistance to MSU students. After graduating from Morgan, Col. White continued his educational journey, earning a Master of Science degree in international affairs from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He is a Distinguished Graduate of the National War College,

Washington, D. C., a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Col. White has experienced a successful leadership career, which includes executive positions in business, government, higher education, and the military. As a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, Col. White served 23 years as a commissioned officer, retiring in 1977. During his long career, he was awarded 25 military awards and decorations. He received three awards for the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, four Bronze Star Medal awards with “V” and three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Upon retiring from the United States Army, Col. White began his career in government, serving 14 years in various appointed executive positions in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania municipal government. In July 1985, after serving only 19 months as Commissioner of the Department of Licenses and Inspections, Mayor W. Wilson Goode, also a Morgan graduate class of 1961, selected him to be the City managing director, the highest appointed position in Philadelphia government. In the business arena, Col. White was vice president of Provident National Bank of Philadelphia. He is currently a member of the board of directors of The Philadelphia Tribune, the nation’s oldest African American newspaper.
